(spoilers below for killers of the flower moon)
just got home from seeing killers of the flower moon and here are thoughts no one asked for
leonardo dicaprio looks like a sweaty thumb this entire film and is easily out acted by just about everyone around him
robert de niro gives the best portrayal of satan on the big screen I've ever seen
the trailer did a great job of misdirecting you into thinking leonardo dicaprio's character is this man with torn loyalties and love in his heart when really ernest bukhart is an eroding popeye's biscuit who deserved the electric chair.
this movie should have been completely from the perspective of mollie burkhart and the osage people, every time the focus was not on the osage I checked out, too much time was devoted playing ' I got somebody for you to murder" telephone.
despite the fact that she is imo severely underutilized, this is lily gladstone's film, you can't take your eyes off her and as I said before, this movie dips when she is not on camera.
I understand it would not have been authentic to the story but I think they should have included a seven to ten minute scene of mollie throat punching ernest because again, FUCK YOU ERNEST YOU KNOW WHAT YOU DID
go see this film, it is long but it is very good and in times like these where every single historical event that doesn't show certain people as the victors is up for erasure and distortion these films are not just art to provide entertainment, education, and discourse, they are evidence.

can we rename barbie to "white feminism 101" at this point ? its fans go on and on about how fundamental the lessons in feminism they learned from and/or were affirmed of by barbie are and they're putting those "lessons" on full display today. it would be funnier if it weren't so insidious that these people are willing to trivialize bella baxter, in example, for having to work at a brothel after her abusive partner gambled away all their money or mollie burkhart, a REAL person, who narrowly avoided being the victim of a genocide against indigenous peoples, all to defend an utterly average performance in an utterly average film.

Killer of the Flower Moon SPOILER
Molly's vision with Hale left me amazed. At that point in the story why would she see him? Why not one of her ancestors, as happened to her mother?
Then, I got it. She didn't see Hale. She saw Death.
As she gets worse, Molly has visions. She sees the owl, an omen of death. She sees her mother, who warns her to talk to the man with the hat (and soon after Herbert has a surprise at the door.)
At that point, the line between spirits and humans is blurred. And then she sees Hale, the one primarily responsible for her and her family's misery. It's the most human version of him we've seen (the fact that it's a hallucination says a lot about him.)
Molly tries to touch him because she doesn't know if he's real or not. Hale doesn't let himself be touched. Because it's not Molly's time yet. Death came to visit Molly looking like the man responsible for her pain with a message ''Whoever did this to you will pay.''
It's a powerful vision, and for once, Hale is sincere. Because it's not him with her.
(Dunno if I'm reading too much into this scene, and if it was just a hallucination, but up until that point Molly's hallucinations made sense to the plot. Even when she tells Herbert you'll be next. And it's true. But not in the sense that Hale would kill him. In the sense, Hale would use him as a scapegoat to save himself. KoTFM is a brilliant movie.)

Re-reading Killers of the Flower Moon to prep for the movie (which I’m convinced will be THE movie of the year tbh) and yep, it’s still horrific.
The thing that always made me seethe was the whole concept of the Osage “needing” guardians appointed by the government to manage how they spend their money...as if there wasn’t crazy ass rich white people spending their own fortunes like they would last forever (large part of this takes place during the Roaring 20s, you know, when living in excess was basically an aesthetic for the wealthy while poor people barely scraped by...)
Anyways I highly recommend the book! Because apparently the movie will be over 3 hrs long and you bet your bottom dollar I’m gonna dig around the net to find out the best time to go pee 😭
