violante fact of the day that no one asked for: her signature scent is a mixture of iris, heliotrope, juniper berries and belladonna which makes for a quite sophisticated earthy aroma with light notes of smth floral and smth sweet like almond. the belladonna is not easily recognizable in the mix since it's more subtle but it gives a dark edge to the scent, plus if you have an attentive eye it's easy to catch the signs of belladonna poisoning (dilated pupils, sensitivity to light, flushing just to name a few). as result of a nearly daily ingestion she did develop a moderate resistance to basic poisons, plus a kiss from violante feels quite bittersweet and pungent, especially if it's right after she drinks the perfume, and it's not exactly the most enjoyable unless you like the unusual taste. i guess she doesn't have to worry about bad breath problems at least

Flo's V8 Café has been in (presumably near-constant) operation since the 1950s, That's a long time for a diner, with plenty of time for lots of experimentation, adaptation, and innovation, both within the diner itself and in the broader world of changing culinary tastes. With that in mind, what's something that Flo decided would have to be permanently removed from the menu for one reason or another? On the flip side of that, what's something that she was/is really proud of adding to the menu?

Flo's a traditionalist--the broader world of changing culinary tastes very rarely intersects with the world of small-town diners. Maybe down in the big city a restaurant will live or die by their ability to adapt, to innovate, to wow. But Flo's clientele are the cars looking for comfort food; for the five-option menu; for the simple, solid, predictable fare. (She was always a huge fan of The Automat.)

When she toured with the Motorama girls, Flo fell in love with the bustle and churn of the big wide world, but she loved how reliably consistent the diners were. No matter where they were, or how far from home, the diner always felt familiar and the fare was always a comfort. When she set up shop in Radiator Springs, that's what she wanted to provide.

When the Interstate was built and Radiator Springs began to realize they would not be written into its story, they'd held a town hall: Innovate or perish. There was lots of talk of how to pull cars off the highway, get them in the door with gimmicks and exclusives.

I won't be doing that, said Flo.

And that was that. Or at least, it was for her. The town hall continued, at greater and greater volume, foundation rumbling as the RPMs hit that particular desperate resonance. The town could not reach a majority vote. The innovators left. The town grew skeletal.

Nowadays, that anxious energy has largely burned off. With the confidence of someone whose road days are behind her but whose home is no longer under threat, Flo's been getting a little more daring with her offerings. Nothing formal--she doesn't announce them, or ever put them on the menu. But if you're around at the right time of day on a particular day, she might have something for you.

Flo and Best Friend

It’s a good gig, the Motorama Girls. But Flo ain’t fixing to stay around forever. She likes singing and dancing well enough, but to her there’s been no song sweeter than the songs her momma sung in the kitchen when she didn’t think anyone was listening. Those songs were rickety, meandering things, but they’d always been alive, always sounded like the way her momma’s dinners tasted. Flo’s tried once or twice, when the rest of the girls weren’t home and she had their little flat to herself, but she’d always ended up singing their showtunes. And that’s not real kitchen singing.

“Girl, what you savin’ for? You tryna start a diner or a hotel mansion?” says Trixie, peering over Flo’s fenders one day as Flo works out the math. “You know you got more than enough to start you out. Don’t tell me you afraid to go, after all this talk!”

Flo is loathe to say goodbye, that much is true. The Motorama Girls aren’t just a gig; they’re a sisterhood. They are more love than Flo would’ve dared to imagine in this world, and Flo has no shortage of daring. She wants to start a diner, after all.

“It’s not the diner money I’m worried about,” she says. “But last time Dina went down to Georgia for her uncle’s thing we were on the phone for four hours with her! I have to make sure my pocketbook can handle all our long-distance calls!”

Trixie’s eyes fill with abrupt and jewel-like tears. “God, long distance. When you say it like that!” She nuzzles Flo’s nearest fender, and her tears leave streaks on them both. 

“You invite us to the grand opening, now. I wanna order your first quart of oil!” she says. “Girl, you’re going to be amazing.”

I've had the idea in my mind for awhile of what Motorama life actually was like for Flo and if it makes sense, I "channeled" her to get a grasp of what that scene in such a famous revue must've been like aside from the veneer of good times. As a woman myself who's--unfortunately--been the subject of a perverted eye I knew these were good grounds to base her experiences on too, for it certainly would've happened to this woman--a showgirl.

So here we have a lady who's entrenched in that life yet sometimes when the lights go on her heart isn't in it. And she wishes she could be anywhere else but here...
