Prairie Trillium
Trillium recurvatum
These unique, dark trillium plants caught our eye while we were exploring woods in Jersey County, Illinois. This species usually has splotchy green leaves. dailybotany suggested these trillium plants may have upped their anthocyanin production in response to exposure to higher levels of solar radiation. There were a few of these trilliums with dark leaves in the general area, and it may have been a sunnier than usual spot in the understory of the forest there, so this theory makes sense. I still wonder if it's possible this small population carries a genetic mutation... I have explored many woods and never seen trilliums this dark. I love listening to different theories and learning new info.
Trillium recurvatum is native to much of the Mississippi River basin in the central / eastern United States. Eastern Ohio has a few populations, which are listed as potentially threatened by their DNR. There are also a couple isolated populations in North Carolina, but it's debated whether or not they were actually planted long ago. Its closest lookalike with overlapping range is trillium sessile; however, the sepals on s. recurvatum plants curve downward as the flower opens, and the stem is usually much shorter than on t. sessile. This species can grow in habitats ranging from floodplains, to mesic forests and mesic savannas. Often, they're found growing in calcareous soils or over calcium-rich rocks such as limestone.

Even with a new booster, the XBB.1.5 vaccine offered no increased protection from infection against the JN.1 variant. This alarming discovery underscores the virus's relentless ability to mutate and evade our defenses, fueling continued transmission, evolution, and the devastating threat of Long COVID.
"Ongoing evolution of SARS-CoV-2 drives escape from mRNA vaccine-induced humoral immunity"
(March 07, 2024)
"However, progressive loss of neutralization was observed across newer variants, irrespective of vaccine doses. Importantly, an updated XBB.1.5 booster significantly increased titers against newer variants but not JN.1. These findings demonstrate that seasonal boosters improve titers against contemporaneous strains, but novel variants continue to evade updated mRNA vaccines, demonstrating the need for novel approaches to adequately control SARS-CoV-2 transmission."

Highlight
Knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 is only 4 years old, as indicated by the recent example of the emergence of BA.2.86. The number and nature of amino acid substitutions carried by BA.2.86 alerted the WHO, the TAG-VE and other scientists that this variant could evade current population immunity and spread globally. However, live virus-neutralization studies have shown no substantial differences in this variant’s ability to be neutralized by antibodies from vaccinated individuals who have also experienced infection with an Omicron variant, compared with that of XBB.1.5 (ref. 17). A BA.2.86 descendant lineage (JN.1, which carries the additional spike mutation L455S) has become dominant, and as of March 2024, it represented 96% of publicly available sequences. It remains unclear to date what genetic and phenotypic features have made JN.1 so successful relative to its parent lineage.
New variants can be identified faster by robust monitoring of virus evolution in susceptible animal species; efforts to provide more visibility of genomic surveillance blind spots; and enhanced genomic surveillance among high-risk populations, such as immunosuppressed individuals. Surveillance mechanisms, such as early warning systems for clinical severity caused by respiratory pathogens, genomics data with associated metadata, wastewater monitoring programs, and comprehensive monitoring of the effectiveness of countermeasures, including therapeutics, vaccines and diagnostics, will continue to have a pivotal role going forward in guiding public health interventions.
In order for us to be prepared to future variants of concern, it is essential that genomics surveillance strategies within integrated respiratory virus surveillance systems remain active and that further laboratory and epidemiological studies be rapidly performed to ensure a fast risk assessment of novel emerging variants.
Major takeaway
The virus has outpaced us. We cannot control covid without robust monitoring and other public health measures.

Tragically, anon, it doesn't (truly) exist! As of yet...
I kicked off a little intro snippet for my wife and I to play with, but it's mostly just been marinating and mutating in my brain from there.
There's so much meaty material to play with in the context of a post-not-apocalypse world that isn't remotely the recycled cash grab the subsequent ten seasons went with. Obviously network/budget constraints meant confining the story to the states, but in my imagination, there are no limits!
Dean can fumble his way around Cas on the road, doing whatever it is that satisfies that eternally restless itch to be moving and marching.
Meanwhile, we can have a whole Sam-centric spin-off that lets him go full nerd and meet people all around the world to help him figure out the whens and hows and whys because that brain of his is never satisfied.
He can get tatted up with enochian script as the years go by (and if certain sections reference a certain archangel he can't get out of his head, no one needs to know). He can take Claire Novak on as a stateside apprentice (who also keeps tabs on his brother now and then). He can hunt down mythical relics and spells (and favors) that inevitably lead him to the road that ends with jailbreaking his celestial other half. Only this time, it's fully intentional and he's walking into the blinding white with his eyes wide open.
Of course Lucifer would've preferred a different physical homecoming, but humans are weird with our hangups about bodily autonomy so he settles for a vastly-reinforced (and mercifully vacated) Nick and slowly learns that this is the face Sam intrinsically associates with him, over anything else. So it gets less uncomfortable over time. (He'll settle for a great deal, it turns out, if it means Sam is his.)
And Sam's pure acceptance this time, instead of the desperate denial from before, that's the part that shocks him the most. Time passes so differently between Hell and Earth; how much has he lost? But, by the same card, what has he gained?
Sam can show him the parts of the world he's uncovered over his nomad years, and when Lucifer has enough of humanity, he can take Sam to the hidden pockets that still remain untainted. They can give and take between each other, instead of trying to get one to bow to the other's will. It's not easy and it gets messy, but it's good. It's so much better than before. Maybe what they were meant for all along.
...so yeah! If there's still S5 samifer fans in the year of our lord 2024, I might be convinced to actually write this shit down in some form. But you guys actually gotta show up, otherwise it's just gonna keep marinating in my brain juices and make me go insane xD

No Russian election since Soviet times has been manipulated to the extent we are seeing in the 2024 “presidential election”. The political context is dictatorial, the regime’s power grab comprehensive. The media are subject to wartime censorship, and there is not even a pretence of political competition. The death of Alexei Navalny has only heightened the atmosphere of fear. Yet although the vote is an authoritarian plebiscite, a rubber stamp, signs of popular criticism of the regime and the war should not be overlooked. Germany and Europe should unequivocally state that this election is undemocratic and illegitimate. But even more importantly, contacts with critics of the war inside Russia must be maintained.
The Russian regime’s key domestic political project of the past decade culminates on 17 March 2024, with Vladimir Putin’s “re-election” as president. Putin will be confirmed in office for the fifth time, and – actually in violation of the constitution – for the third time in succession. The Kremlin has long been working towards this moment. The Russian state responded to the wave of demonstrations against Putin and his regime in winter 2011/12 by switching to authoritarian stabilisation in all political spheres. The lower chamber of parliament, the State Duma, passed a succession of new laws designed to gradually eliminate political opposition and independent civil society. The means for manipulating elections were systematically optimised. The Duma elections in 2016 and 2021, the 2018 presidential election, and the local and regional elections of recent years should be understood as trials for this year’s “presidential election”. The state-controlled media have mutated into a powerful propaganda tool, while independent journalism has been stamped out entirely. The dominant propaganda narrative has grown into a quasi-ideology over time, a concoction of ultra-conservatism, imperialism, anti-Americanism, chauvinism, illiberalism and anti-feminism.
The regime exploited the annexation of Crimea in 2014 to stoke nationalist sentiment in broad sections of society. But the effect only lasted until 2018, after which the repression had to be expanded and the propaganda ramped up, in order to shield the state from growing dissatisfaction in the population.
In 2020 Putin took the decisive step of securing his grip on power “legally” with a new constitution. While it still limits the president to no more than two consecutive six-year terms, it restarts the clock in 2024. This “annulment” of his previous terms would permit Putin to remain head of state until 2036. The reform was rushed through by dubious means during the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic and “confirmed” in a heavily manipulated referendum in July 2020.
The Russian state responded to the Covid pandemic and the democracy movement in neighbouring Belarus in August 2020 with a dramatic political radicalisation. This culminated in the full-scale war against Ukraine in February 2022, which in turn triggered another wave of autocratisation. Russia is today a dictatorship with totalitarian and fascist tendencies. All these strands come together in the 2024 “presidential election”.

March 1st COVID variant update (2024).
The JN.1 variant contains several mutations that are associated with escape from vaccine-mediated immune protection. Recent research shows that JN.1 is very efficient at immune evasion

🌓 Lord Nighty-Knight & Dr. Vulture 🪶
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ship name/tag: 🌓 i hear the secrets that you keep
Anniversary: March 3, 2024
F/O source: Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate/Megamind Rules!
My backstory: I'm an ornithologist who focuses primarily on vultures. While working with a lappet-faced vulture who lives at my place of employment (a bird sanctuary), we're attacked by a supervillain who can combine things, resulting in me becoming a lappet-faced vulture hybrid. Unfortunately, due to my newly-found mutation, I find it hard to integrate into society and end up seeking out people like me who have been mutated/have super powers.
How we meet: While in a meeting for super humans, I meet Lord Nighty-Knight and befriend him as he also went through an event similar to me that led to his abilities (an accident that caused him to become a being of shadow). However, while I went a more neutral route, he became a villain and joined the Doom Syndicate.
First impressions: I have a pretty immediate crush on Nighty-Knight. He's very unique and I find it attractive. I think he's sweet and I like talking to him.
Nighty-Knight also quite likes me when we first meet. He regards me with interest and thinks I'm nice. We bond easily over our shared origins as well and have several enjoyed topics in common.
Getting closer: After the meeting, we exchange contact information and keep in touch. Even after he ends up becoming a full-blown villain (and knows I don't approve), we still stay friends, starting to meet more often and go out for little dates together. During this time, my crush becomes a lot more obvious with me pining after him, so I ask him out on a date.
He's startled by this as he's quite oblivious to my flirting but ends up agreeing to go out on a date. We start going out more often on dates as we become closer in our relationship.
Beginning our relationship: I ask him to start a relationship with me awhile after we start dating and he agrees, excited to take this next step in our relationship. He's also aware that I'm planning on proposing to him in the near future as we would love to be married.
Ship trope(s): None ATM
Aesthetics: None ATM
Our song(s): None ATM
Favorite forms of affection: I love receiving compliments and being told about how he cares for me. It makes me feel seen and cared for greatly.
Nighty-Knight really likes both physical affection and acts of service. He loves being cuddled and kissed; it makes him feel warm and happy inside. Being a supervillain means he's quite busy, so I like to do things for him - it makes him feel loved and appreciated.
Favorite kind of date: Coffee dates are a favorite of ours. We both enjoy coffee so it's nice to go to a quiet cafe and enjoy drinks together, talking about our weeks.
Ways we comfort one another: We encourage each other verbally as a form of comfort. It's nice to be reminded that it will be okay or that we are there for one another - it's a shoulder to lean on and someone to trust when it gets rough.
What we love most about each other: He loves my care for all living things. I'm passionate about caring for others - humans, animals, and plants alike. He thinks that is an admirable trait and appreciates it about me.
I love his personality. He acts so tough and uncaring but he is extremely caring underneath it all. I love how sweet and funny he is as well. He's a very cool person and I love spending time with him.
