#nebuchadnezzar's dream
Note
What if Aro told Carlisle that he suspected him to be gifted back when they were together in Volterra all those years ago?
Anon's talking about Carlisle's hypothetical gift, TL;DR people like Carlisle.
Caveat
To me it's not unbelievable Aro wouldn't have done so (if we take my gift theory as fact). He doesn't get to see Carlisle in action enough, with people who should be hostile and not simply annoyed, to have any kind of meaningful proof or anything beyond mild suspicions (if he in fact has those).
What pushes him over the edge in @therealvinelle's Nebuchadnezzar's Dream (where this gift is a large plot point) is seeing things from Edward's perspective as well as what Carlisle has managed to make of himself.
Carlisle has become a doctor to humans who are terrified instinctually of vampires and people like him. Esme as a human didn't just think he was great but idolized the idea of him for years. We know that Elizabeth felt confident and comfortable on her death bed to ask Carlisle to turn her son into an alien (granted, Elizabeth could just be and likely was a very interesting person, but still). Charlie Swan notes to Bella how he really likes the Cullens, primarily Carlisle who he sees the most of, and thinks they're a great family and only seems to become concerned about Edward after the New Moon fiasco.
Add onto that that Carlisle wasn't murdered by any suspicious covens along the way even with funky yellow eyes and a weird sales pitch, that he was able to negotiate with the wolves, and that he has friends everywhere who will all risk their lives not just for his sake but for the sake of his weird baby thing that his adopted son made with a human, and a record of every thought Edward has witnessed surrounding Carlisle and how they all approach him, and that's getting Aro on board with the hypothetical gift meta idea.
But when Carlisle was in Volterra, Aro didn't have that. He might have wondered "man, how is this guy so hot and charming?" but it could just be Carlisle's hot and charming.
So, I could see why he wouldn't consider it deeply or bring up even suspecting it if he did. Gifts are rare, he's probably wrong, and even if he is right--this one's a doozy.
But Alright, Let's Say He Does
Carlisle leaves to become a hermit.
At first Carlisle doesn't believe him. What Aro's saying is nonsense. Of course Carlisle interacts with the world the way normal people do, and isn't secretly using demon mind control, Aro's the one who told him there's no such thing as Satan.
This is ridiculous.
However, some way or another (perhaps involving ye olde pyramid schemes, 17th century David Bowie and glam rock, and pilgrammage for the Ziggy Stardisciples) they manage to prove that what's happening to Carlisle is not normal. This is not how the world works for ordinary people.
Upon being convinced, Carlisle realizes not only is every relationship he has a fraud, but he's taking advantage of everyone around him (worse, of course, if he had romantic interactions with them). Everyone has to like him, everyone has to agree with him, everyone has to listen to him even when he could be wrong.
"I must become a hermit and seek solitude in the mountains"
Aro, of course, is devestated and think this is ridiculous. "CARLISE, I READ MINDS AND MURDER PEOPLE ALL THE TIME AND IT'S FINE! YOU'RE FINE!" (this is not a compelling argument)
It's made worse that Aro takes the opportunity to try to get Carlisle off the diet again. Look, Carlisle, if by nature you're a mind controlling demon you might as well eat people. Right?
I imagine Carlisle leaves Volterra and seeks solitude in the mountains, contemplating the deep secrets of life/universe and writing theological treatises. Aro asks Demetri to check in on him every once in a while and see how he's getting on/if he's ready to be reasonable.
He never is.

How do you go about foreshadowing?
Whimsically.
Most of my fics haven't been mapped out in detail when I start, and if they have then I always deviate from the plan. When I do foreshadow, it's usually as a wink-wink, nudge-nudge to the readers or clearing my throat loudly at them.
The point of foreshadowing, as I see it, is that you want to point the reader towards where things are headed. They don't have to know specifically how the story will end, but they should be given an indication that something bad is going to happen to character A or that something is brewing with character B.
There's also what I can only call author's Easter eggs in this category, that is to say, the little things the author leaves in for their own sake that the readers might catch, might not, but I don't really consider that foreshadowing in the same way.
I think I'll explain using Nebuchadnezzar's Dream, as it has several bits of foreshadowing. A few that come to mind:
Carlisle has been sent away so he can't interfere with his family's plan to overthrow the Cullens. He doesn't know this, he bought the excuse they gave him, but in chapter 5 I include a flashback to a talk he had with Edward where he not only made it clear he won't support open rebellion, but also unknowingly comes across as brainwashed by Chelsea. Edward, rather than try to dissuade him, quietly says "I see", and Carlisle notes that Edward never broached the subject again. The scene's inclusion (as I could have found another way to show the readers how Carlisle feels about the Volturi, but chose this scene with Edward), Carlisle's refusal to believe Edward could seriously be considering it, and the fact that Edward openly says "I think we should overthrow the Volturi" were all meant to set off the readers' alarm bells.
More on the symbolic end: my determination to have Carlisle, Jane, and Alec fake their deaths by drowning, and Carlisle getting an ominous feeling about it, was because they'll very soon have no choice but to live underwater indefinitely.
Renata's talk with Carlisle about Bella Swan, where she confides she's been terrified of the Cullens and what they might be capable of. The specific fear of an army showing up to murder them all is brought up, in the context of her expressing how happy she is to not have to worry about it anymore.
Aro's warning to Carlisle that he has misjudged Edward's character and this may have disastrous consequences, specifically "I think (...) that all I can do is let this happen. Whatever it will be."
There have been other fics I wrote that had foreshadowing in them, but at the moment the only ones coming to mind are incomplete fics that I don't wish to spoil.
Generally, though, when deciding if something could use foreshadowing, identify if the event you're wanting to foreshadowing is something that's being built up to and will be important to the fic, and from there determine how it can be foreshadowed. The conversation with Edward in Nebuchadnezzar's Dream was meant to be a glaring red flag, as I all but told them what was going to happen, Aro in the chapter immediately afterwards saying "Edward's going to do something, Carlisle", Renata bringing up her fears of an attack, were all me shouting as loudly as I could at my readers. It worked for that fic because there were so many indicators the Cullens were up to something.
Ultimately, my unprofessional advice is to have fun with it. If there's a place in your fic where you can put a clue for the readers, then go for it and if your readers don't pick up on it, that's fine too. They probably won't.

Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream
1 In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams; his mind was troubled and he could not sleep. 2 So the king summoned the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers and astrologers to tell him what he had dreamed. When they came in and stood before the king, 3 he said to them, “I have had a dream that troubles me and I want to know what it means.”
4 Then the astrologers answered the king, “May the king live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
5 The king replied to the astrologers, “This is what I have firmly decided: If you do not tell me what my dream was and interpret it, I will have you cut into pieces and your houses turned into piles of rubble. 6 But if you tell me the dream and explain it, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and interpret it for me.”
7 Once more they replied, “Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will interpret it.”
8 Then the king answered, “I am certain that you are trying to gain time, because you realize that this is what I have firmly decided: 9 If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one penalty for you. You have conspired to tell me misleading and wicked things, hoping the situation will change. So then, tell me the dream, and I will know that you can interpret it for me.”
10 The astrologers answered the king, “There is no one on earth who can do what the king asks! No king, however great and mighty, has ever asked such a thing of any magician or enchanter or astrologer. 11 What the king asks is too difficult. No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among humans.”
12 This made the king so angry and furious that he ordered the execution of all the wise men of Babylon. 13 So the decree was issued to put the wise men to death, and men were sent to look for Daniel and his friends to put them to death.
14 When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon, Daniel spoke to him with wisdom and tact. 15 He asked the king’s officer, “Why did the king issue such a harsh decree?” Arioch then explained the matter to Daniel. 16 At this, Daniel went in to the king and asked for time, so that he might interpret the dream for him.
17 Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah. 18 He urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that he and his friends might not be executed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 During the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven 20 and said:
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. 21 He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. 22 He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him. 23 I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors: You have given me wisdom and power, you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the dream of the king.”
Daniel Interprets the Dream
24 Then Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to execute the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon. Take me to the king, and I will interpret his dream for him.”
25 Arioch took Daniel to the king at once and said, “I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can tell the king what his dream means.”
26 The king asked Daniel (also called Belteshazzar), “Are you able to tell me what I saw in my dream and interpret it?”
27 Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. He has shown King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in days to come. Your dream and the visions that passed through your mind as you were lying in bed are these:
29 “As Your Majesty was lying there, your mind turned to things to come, and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen. 30 As for me, this mystery has been revealed to me, not because I have greater wisdom than anyone else alive, but so that Your Majesty may know the interpretation and that you may understand what went through your mind.
31 “Your Majesty looked, and there before you stood a large statue—an enormous, dazzling statue, awesome in appearance. 32 The head of the statue was made of pure gold, its chest and arms of silver, its belly and thighs of bronze, 33 its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of baked clay. 34 While you were watching, a rock was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay and smashed them. 35 Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold were all broken to pieces and became like chaff on a threshing floor in the summer. The wind swept them away without leaving a trace. But the rock that struck the statue became a huge mountain and filled the whole earth.
36 “This was the dream, and now we will interpret it to the king. 37 Your Majesty, you are the king of kings. The God of heaven has given you dominion and power and might and glory; 38 in your hands he has placed all mankind and the beasts of the field and the birds in the sky. Wherever they live, he has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.
39 “After you, another kingdom will arise, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule over the whole earth. 40 Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron—for iron breaks and smashes everything—and as iron breaks things to pieces, so it will crush and break all the others. 41 Just as you saw that the feet and toes were partly of baked clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom; yet it will have some of the strength of iron in it, even as you saw iron mixed with clay. 42 As the toes were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle. 43 And just as you saw the iron mixed with baked clay, so the people will be a mixture and will not remain united, any more than iron mixes with clay.
44 “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever. 45 This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands—a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces.
“The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46 Then King Nebuchadnezzar fell prostrate before Daniel and paid him honor and ordered that an offering and incense be presented to him. 47 The king said to Daniel, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, for you were able to reveal this mystery.”
48 Then the king placed Daniel in a high position and lavished many gifts on him. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and placed him in charge of all its wise men. 49 Moreover, at Daniel’s request the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego administrators over the province of Babylon, while Daniel himself remained at the royal court. — Daniel 2 | New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV® Copyright ©1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® All rights reserved worldwide. Hi! I just read your sequel to ND and it was soo excellent..was a bit confused bout the ending though, is Edward doomed to become a vampire in every timeline?
Hello! Thank you for your question and I’l so glad that you liked In the Lion’s Den.
The epilogue was not even an idea but a kind of teaser that the timeline is resilient and doesn’t like to be changed... I wouldn’t say that Edward is doomed to become a vampire but the timeline really wants it to happen.

Why does the devil have three names?
We have no idea what the Devil's name is.
Satan is a title, from a Hebrew word that means resister, adversary. Devil is also a title, from a Greek word that means slanderer. The is a determiner used to point forward to a qualifying word or phrase. Lucifer is not and never was the Devil's name, that rather was a translation of a Hebrew word that means shining one.
Jerome, who translated the Hebrew scriptures into Latin, didn't speak Hebrew and his knowledge of the language was passable but not great; he inserted a Latin portmanteau, derived from two Latin words, lux and fer, light bringer, to make Lucifer, which is also the old Roman name for Venus, the morning star.
The Shining One in question was actually the king of Babylon, an ancient city in what is now Iraq, most likely Nebuchadnezzar II. (Isaiah 14:4, 12)
God did not see fit to record the name of the angel that came to be Satan.

Daniel 2:28 Give God The Credit
But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the later days. Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, were these: Daniel 2:28 Every person likes to receive credit for what they did. No one likes someone else credit for what they had done themselves. Often people try to take credit for what someone else has done.…

In Nebuchadnezzar‘s Dream, is there any universe where Carlisle could‘ve stopped the overthrow of the Volturi? Say, he and Edward never have that conversation, and they assume he‘s not that fond of the Volturi either, so he‘s in the know of the plan from the beginning. Does Carlisle call to warn Aro, or would Alice have seen that outcome still?
(Anon is referring to my fic Nebuchadnezzar's Dream, in which there's a successful coup and the Volturi get massacred.)
See, the funny thing about Nebuchadnezzar's Dream is, I don't think I would write it today. I'd play with the thought and want to write it, but... well, I've lost a lot of faith in the Cullens since then.
I don't think they'd be able to pull it off.
The amount of secrecy involved here to spread the word that manpower was needed to rush Volterra without word reaching the Volturi, the concept of Carlisle's friends either refusing or agreeing to join in but none of them telling him about it, the sheer micromanaging required to keep several dozen vampires in line for months, maybe years...
Look at Bella alone, look at how she is in canon when people try to reason with her or get her on board with a plan. Every damn time she decides she has a better idea, and she runs off to do that instead.
You'd be looking at the Romanians (as they were always the orchestrators of the coup, from the moment I had the idea for the fic) not only successfully keeping Bella in line, which is a feat in and of its own, but keeping all the other Cullens in line, as well as all the allies. Some of which were newborns. For months.
There's things like Carlisle being out of the way. Carlisle has tremendous sway over other vampires and could easily get them more manpower, the Cullens' allies would need a very good explanation from the Cullens for why he's not doing that.
Nebuchadnezzar's Dream is the one golden timeline out of a thousand where somehow nothing went wrong, every time the probability was one to a thousand that single lucky break favored the usurpers.
Similar things have been pulled off in real life, impossible coups have won through, secrets have been kept by improbably large groups of people with nobody breaking, and the Romanians had the advantage of knowing exactly what they were up against. It is possible for this to happen. Just deeply unlikely.
So yes, Carlisle could have prevented this, I'm sure there are a thousand timelines where he does. Just as there are a thousand timelines where Renesmee, Bella, Alistair, or Jessica Stanley prevent it.

Nebuchadnezzar's Dream (Daniel 2)
Dreams have an important place in the Bible. There is no doubt that dreams were really means of divine communication, as in Jacob's ladder, in the dreams of Pharaoh, and in that of Nebuchadnezzar. The account of this dream and its interpretation is very interesting. The king's strange forgetting of it - gave additional opportunity for the glorifying of the true God. Babylon's 'wise men' could not tell the king, what he had forgotten. Then Daniel came.
There is a suggestion in the king's forgetting. Does God never come to us with some revealing, some glimpse of His holiness, some lesson, some vision of truth - which we immediately forget? Some of us forget sermons - before we get home from church! Sometimes we can hardly even remember the minister's text! Sometimes impressions that are vivid and distinct at the time they are made - pass almost entirely from the mind in a little while! The king could not recall any part of the dream which had troubled him so. He demanded of his wise men, that they tell him first what the dream was - and then what it meant. When all his wise men failed to be able to do this, Daniel sent the king word that his God was a revealer of secrets, and that he would make known Nebuchadnezzar's dream. He then told him what the dream was, and afterward made known its message.
Daniel said, "You, O king, are king of kings - unto whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom." The point to be specially noted here - is that all earthly power is from God. He gives it to whoever He will. Kings are appointed to rule for Him and receive their authority from Him. The same is true of all who bear authority, of whatever kind. This gives a sacredness to power, whether it be the parent's, the teacher's, the magistrate's, the overseer's. All human power and authority - is only God's power entrusted. We must use it reverently, in faithfulness, in love.
Napoleon, when he became emperor, took the crown in his own hands and put it on his head, implying that he made himself ruler. Later he learned that power belongs to God ; that He puts one down and sets another up.
Daniel proceeded to indicate in detail - the meaning of the vision. "You are the head of gold. And after you shall arise a kingdom inferior to you, and another third kingdom. And the fourth kingdom shall be as strong as iron, forasmuch as iron breaks in pieces and subdues all things." Thus history ever reads. One kingdom gives place to another. The greatest kingdoms are pushed aside - and thrust down by the less. Not only among nations is this true; we see the same in families and among individuals. The rich of one generation, are the poor of the next. The high in rank today, are forgotten tomorrow. Thrones built by human hands crumble. God can humble the proudest whenever He desires. He can destroy the head of gold; and crush the arms of silver; and break the legs of brass; and demolish the feet of iron and clay! "The snowflakes of Russia humbled Napoleon's pride, and the raindrops at Waterloo sent him into exile!"
Then Daniel went on to describe the element of glory in the vision - the setting up of the kingdom that never should be destroyed. "The God of heaven set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed, nor shall the sovereignty thereof be left to another people; but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever!" Right in the midst of the glory of Rome - came Jesus Christ, to set up the kingdom of His Father in this world. This kingdom differed in many ways from those world kingdoms which were pictured in the vision. It was not established by war, by military conquest - but by moral force alone. Christ had no armies of soldiers marching forth with Him to crush opposition. He came not to destroy men's lives - but to save them!
There is a story of an emperor in whose realm, there was a rebellion. Certain of his subjects were in revolt. The emperor was setting out to the scene of the uprising, and said to his nobles, "Come with me and see me destroy those rebels!" But when he reached the province he showed only kindness to those in revolt. He treated them with gentleness and affection. The result was that they laid down their arms - and became his most loyal subjects. His nobles reminded him of his words to them, "Come and see me destroy my enemies!" He replied, "I have destroyed my enemies; I have made them my friends!" This illustrates Christ's conquest - and the way He extends His kingdom. It is set up not by force of arms - but by love; it rules our hearts !
"The God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end - but it will itself endure forever!" Daniel 2:44
There are four things said here about the kingdom of Christ:
First, it never shall be destroyed! The kingdoms of this world have their day - and then cease to be. One destroys another. The strongest earthly kingdom has in it, the elements of decay - clay mingled with its iron - and is thus doomed to destruction! Nothing earthly is indestructible. But the kingdom of Christ shall never be destroyed.
Second, it shall never pass to another king! No one king long occupies any earthly throne. Human life is short, and no hand can long hold the scepter. Even dynasties are short-lived. But Christ is a King out of whose hands the scepter shall never drop; on whose brow the diadem shall never lose its luster!
Third, this kingdom of Christ shall go on conquering - until all earth's kingdom's have submitted to its sway! Unto Christ every knee shall bow - and every tongue shall confess that He is the Lord of all!
Fourth, the kingdom of Christ shall be eternal! When all earth's thrones have crumbled into dust, Christ's throne shall appear in the clouds, shining in glory!
The interpretation of the dream closed in a wonderful picturing of the glorious coming of the kingdom of Christ. "This is the meaning of the vision of the rock cut out of a mountain, but not by human hands - a rock that broke the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver and the gold to pieces. The great God has shown the king what will take place in the future. The dream is true and the interpretation is trustworthy!"
The rock was Christ. It came from heaven, from God. Its origin was supernatural, "Not by human hands." It smote the image, and broke in pieces the iron, the clay, the silver, the gold. So shall the kingdom of Christ continue to grow and extend - until it shall fill all the world and absorb all power! Whatever is wrong - shall be broken to pieces; and holiness shall fill all things.
"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign for ever and ever!" - Revelation 11:15

A look at God's grace.
Pay attention to your dreams.  My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: (John 10:27) In this study, we are going to take a look at God’s grace and patience. We are going to take a look at a letter in the Bible, which is located in the Old Testament. Many of us know about the letters that the Apostle Paul wrote in the New Testament, but this one was written in the Old…
