Queen of Bohemia

Nina Hamnett (1890–1956) was a Welsh artist and writer, and an expert on sailors’ chanteys, who became known as the Queen of Bohemia. Flamboyantly unconventional, and openly bisexual, Hamnett once danced nude on a Montparnasse café table just for the “hell of it”. She drank heavily, was sexually promiscuous, and kept numerous lovers and close associations within the artistic community. Very quickly, she became a well-known bohemian personality throughout Paris and modelled for many artists. She went on to have a love affair with Brzeska, and later with Amedeo Modigliani and Roger Fry.

British painter, designer, and illustrator, famous more for her flamboyant bohemian life than for her work. She was born in Tenby, Wales, the daughter of an army officer, and studied at various art schools in Dublin, London, and finally Paris. On her first night there she met the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. He introduced her to Picasso, Serge Dighilev, and Jean Cocteau, and she went to live at the famous artist’s residence of La Ruche which housed many other Bohemian artists and modernist writers. It was there that she met the Norwegian artist Roald Kristian (also known as Edgar de Bergen), whom she married in 1914. She seems to have been relieved when he was deported as an unregistered alien during the First World War; they never saw one another again.

Like other women at the time reveling in a newfound independence, she had her hair cut short in a ‘crophead’ style (what we would now call a basin cut) and she wore eccentric clothing:

"I wore in the daytime a clergyman’s hat, a check coat, and a skirt with red facings … white stockings and men’s dancing pumps and was stared at in the Tottenham Court Road. One had to do something to celebrate one’s freedom and escape from home."

From 1913 to 1919 Hamnett worked for Roger Fry's Omega Workshops; Fry (with whom she had a love affair) painted several portraits of her. In the 1920s, she spent much of her time in Paris, where once again she knew many leading figures of the avant-garde, including Jean Cocteau and the composers Satie and Stravinsky.

During the 1920s (and for the rest of her life) she made the area in central London known as Fitzrovia her home and stamping ground. This new locale for arty-Bohemia was centred on the Fitzroy Tavern in Charlotte Street which she frequented along with fellow Welsh artists Augustus John and Dylan Thomas, making occasional excursions across Oxford Street to the Gargoyle Club in Soho.

However, she often returned to London for exhibitions of her work, which included portraits, landscapes, interiors, and figure compositions (notably café scenes) in a robust style drawing on various modern influences. In addition to paintings, she made book illustrations (spontaneous pen-and-ink drawings), notably for Osbert Sitwell's The People's Album of London Statues (1928). From the 1930s the quality of her work declined, partly because of the influence of alcohol.

In 1932 she published a volume of memoirs entitled Laughing Torso, which was a best-seller in both the UK and the USA. Following its publication she was sued by Aleister Crowley, whom she had accused of practicing black magic. The ensuing trial caused a sensation which helped sales of the book, and Crowley lost his case.

Her success in this instance only fuelled her downward spiral, and she spent the last three decades of her life propping up the bar of the Fitzroy trading anecdotes of her glory years for free drinks. She took little interest in personal hygiene, was incontinent in public, and vomited into her handbag.

Her ending was as spectacular as had been her previous life. Drunk one night she either fell or jumped from the window of her flat and was impaled on the railing spikes below.

“Where are you taking me?” Your feet drag across the floor, your body knows this is wrong but your mind is fuzzy. Your ears are ringing with the evil giggles of the dancing woman. Their sinister grins form into that of a cheshire cat. It makes you cold all over. They’re pulling you in all sort of directions. They tug on your clothes, stripping you one item at a time.

“I want her necklace.” “I want her cloak.” “I want her dress.” Stealing everything Thor has given you and your body is too limp to fight. “No, no,” You whimper, shaking your head and reaching out to take back what they steal from you. But you’re too weak. Your hand just falls to your side as you slump back against the closest wall.

You feel their hands roam all over you. “She’s so well fed...” You hear someone mutter. “I wish my thighs were soft like hers.” “We’re all just skin and bone.” “I hear those savages like their woman on the heavier side.” Their words swirl around in your head like whiplash. They pull sharply on your nipple and them praise your body. Pinch your thigh and wish they had it.

“You did so good...so good...” A new voice, a man, the king, not your king. A cold sting drags from your breast down to your naval. Icy and sharp, must be a knife. You gasp when suddenly frosty water drowns your airways. Only to be pulled back to breathe again. Adrenaline swims through you, forcing your vision to clear up.

The English King’s cruel glare makes you itch all over. Your hair stands on edge, naked and vulnerable in front of him. “Tell me, whore, what’s his secret?” Your brows furrow together and you struggle against whatever has been put in your system. “I don’t know-” He groans, “Come on now, don’t make this difficult. How do I break him?”

Again, your eyes droop and your legs feel like sticks. “What? No, no.” You shake your head. Break him? You don’t want to break him. He provides for you. Without him you’d be on the streets. He’s shown you new worlds, you owe him everything. “Come on, don’t tell you you’re defending him! He’s killed thousands of my men without even having to call out an army He doesn’t care about you and he’ll kill you as soon as you stop satisfying his cock.”

You shake your head, “No, you’re wrong.” "If I wanted to kill you, I would not be making love to you." Thor’s voice echos through your mind. That one night so many moons ago. He wouldn’t kill you, he’s never hurt you enough to leave long-lasting damage. He vowed to make you queen, he wouldn’t just kill off his queen. It’s all in discipline, in the name of love. To spare you from men like this English King.

The English King scoffs and grabs you by the throat. Forcing your droopy eyes to peer deep into his. They’re filled with hate. Thor doesn’t have hate. Only guilt and anger that comes and goes. No hate. “Don’t tell me you love that bastard!” You sit in his lap, he braids your hair. He wraps is arms around you, warms you and you calm his nightmares. Each of you give and each of you take and he’s only ever left bruises of possession. Is that not love? What do you know about love?

The English King’s hand tightens around your throat. The drugs mix with the lack of oxygen and suddenly everything feels so light. “You do!” Metal stings in your gut. Right on the edge of making love with your guts. “Pathetic!” Blood pools around the tip of the blade. To kill or to use? To cause Thor more pain or to use her and take over his kingdom?

But you...you special one are worth so much more than his kingdom...

Death is dipped in gold. And so peaceful. There is no pain and looking down, your blood isn’t crimson. It’s glittering and looks so appetizing. Your fingers smear into the gore, but it’s not vile. You want more. It feels so nice and warm against your cold drained skin. And it’s not sticky and not fluid either. Thick, dripping gold.

Angels seem to be singing your name. But, none of this makes sense. You should be in Valhalla. There are no angels where the Vikings go to die. This must be some other place in the great realms of the tree of life. This is the place that your king had showed you, when he spoke the words in the language that feels so close to home and at the same time unknown.

“Du kan ikke dra ennå. Du kan ikke komme hjem. Du må fullføre oppgaven din.” Who is that? Who whisper to you? You don’t understand. You don’t understand the language. But it sounds so familiar to the words your master speak to you. You wish he would speak to you. Tell you what you’re missing. Tell you why he won’t let go of you. Let you go. Let you go home. Where is home? He took it. He’s taken your home. He has it. He is home.

“Don’t fall for their lies!” What? The pretty gilt loses it’s sparkle. Turning a sour yellow and falls further into hideousness. And ugly finite red, never ending pour from the gash in your stomach. “That’s it! Come back to me. Please, please, little dove, look at me.” A bloody hand engulfs your cheek and now it’s an pulchritudinous blue. Thunder cracks through the sky and it hides the sound of people begging for their life from you.

“Du ga henne nettopp til meg! Jeg skal brenne ned Asgard hvis du tar henne nå. Du fryktet meg før, og du vil frykte mitt ord nå.” Who is he talking to? “Du lærer ikke leksjonen din, sønn.” And why can I hear a reply? “Ikke skjenn ut meg mens livet hennes glipper!” Why is he crying? “Min underkastelse kan du ha, men du vil ikke ta henne fra meg.” I’m so tired. “Vær forsiktig med ordene du sier.”

“What did you do?!” A loud boom wakes you along with a crack of lightning. The darkness now dark pink and the throbbing in your body is so much worse than you remember. “You know what they will ask of you now.” Are they talking to you? “You’ve traded her life for billions!” A growl, no, they aren’t talking to you. “They sent her here to play with you and you fell for it.” A loud smack and then crumbling interrupts the heavy raining, why are your eyelids so weighty?

“Don’t you think I know that?! This was not part of the plan, she was never part of the plan!” What plan? Slowly your eyes flutter open, but you shut them just as quickly. In fear that they might see you wake. “You were suppose to pull the wool over their eyes. Make them believe that you’re growing soft. Not actually become weak!” You try again, this time more slowly opening your eyes.

Thor stands leaning on the balcony. His bare back to you, his long blonde hair hangs with shame. The Warriors look to be scolding him. Never did you think you’d see the day of that happening. You didn’t think that anyone could ever hold any power over the mountain of a man. Thick storm clouds colour the sky behind them. “It was too soon. I need more time.”

“We’ve been here over three thousand years. How much more time do you need? Now would’ve been the time to act!” Thor glares over the balcony, down at the New Asgardian people going about their day. He shakes his head. “These mortals will never be ready. We placed far too much hope in their hands. Your best warriors don’t even come close to grazing me.”

You try to get up, to hear more of what they’re saying, but the pain snaps through you and a groan escapes you. Another snap of lightning. All four of their eyes find your own. It’s like predators in the dark. Glowing flames from afar. Thor glares at the warriors, cutting the conversation and their comments short. When they leave the room, Thor’s eyes settle on you.

“Lay back down and don’t move.” His voice is stern, he crosses his arms over his bare chest and just leans against the balcony. You follow his instructions, except you hold out your hand for him to take. Your feel so cold without his body heat always near you. But he does not move, his jaw locks and his eyes don’t move from your stretched out hand.

You can see he's fighting battles in his mind. Why won’t he come closer? He saved you but does not want you? He sighs, his hand rubs his face and then combs through his tangled hair. “You make me weak.” The words hit like the dagger that almost killed you. To hear him admit something like that could have you beheaded. “No.” The word slips from your mouth.

His brows furrow and he snarls. “No?” He asks, almost in shock. “No! You... you cannot be weak! If you are weak then there is no hope for me.” It looks as if you’re talking to him a foreign language. “You are talking nonsense, girl.” He gruffs and shakes his head. “I know what I'm saying. If you are weak then everyone else is strong and I’ll end up back in the hands of people who’d rather learn the name of a pig than my own.”

“You were almost killed! Just because I let my guard down! In the-” he stops and sighs as if stopping his tongue from acting to quick. “Three thousand years?” His eyes go wide and his face goes pale. “How much did you hear?” His jaw locks and his fists crack the stone of the balcony.

My mouth hangs open and I begin to panic. “Answer me!” He yells out, his voice booms inside of you. Lightning strikes the ground behind him. “Fucking hell.” He mutters to himself. Is the lightning scaring him as much as it scares you? Your heart shakes. “I- Everything.” He sighs and again rubs his face. “Another fucking problem.” It hurts to be seen as a problem, something to deal with.

“What were you talking about? Please, talk to me.” You can’t talk like this, laying down. Again you try to get up but wince. Fuck does it hurt. “What the fuck did I say? Can’t you follow orders just once?” He snaps at you, as if that isn’t all you’ve been doing...This is the most he’s talked to you at a time. His heavy boots shake the floor as he stomps over to you.

He sits down next to you, his heavy hand pushes you back down against the soft pillows. Then his hands shove the blankets to the side and begins lifting your dress. You grab his hands. “Please, Thor, I am in pain, I’ll make it up later, I, I promise-” He just growls at you and continues lifting your dress.

You see the huge gash on your stomach. Nowhere near as long or gruesome as the one on his chest, but still unsightly for a lady. His brows knit together, examining the stitches. “Your wound needs to be cleaned.” He mumbles, standing up to get some supplies from the bathroom. This is different, he seems almost more human now. Acknowledging your pain and not using you.

The alcohol burns your stomach and you hiss pulling back. Thor’s huge hand clasps around your hip to keep you in place. “How long was I asleep?” You ask, watching those giant hands of his trying to be gentle. He’s clumsy, not used to dealing with a task so small. “Three days you were between life and death. I cursed the English healers for knowing nothing and as soon as you were stable we made quick work back to New Asgard.”

He explains, it’s so strange to hear him speak so much to you. “Thor, who was that voice? Who was it that you cursed over my dying breath?” His jaw locks tight again. “You were dying, you were seeing things.” You scoff and insist. “I’m not! I know what I saw. It was as you showed me, on the boat. Seeing without looking. Like you said!”

His hand goes up to grab your cheeks between his hand. Your jaw hurts under his force. “If I said that you were seeing things, then it is so. You are not to question me. Know your place. I have no patience or control left.” He commands, his eyes stern and you know if you push it anymore you could end up hurting yourself.

He stands up, rinsing out the towel he had used to clean your wound. And when he’s done he opens the door, ready to leave. “You are not to leave this room under any circumstances. You do not open the door to anyone but me. Not even the Warriors.” He commands, and the door slams in your face before you can argue.

2. What inspires you - I’m going to answer this with a story. A few years ago, I had zero interest in making visual art. I hadn’t made anything since high school and I certainly didn’t see myself as a visual artist, but one day I did this exercise where you write a letter from your inner child to your current self. You use your non-dominant hand so as to more easily tap into your repressed feelings. The writing was an extremely cathartic experience, but what was more interesting was that immediately after I had finished the writing, I created a doodle with my left hand of this distressed robot character and colored it in (see first image). It was evident that that drawing was a reflection of my world at that current moment. I then had the revelation that I didn’t have to try to convey anything with my work, that anything I made would be a symbolic expression of my emotional landscape and would be good in and of itself because of this. So what inspires me really is this nonverbal process of excavating and releasing hidden emotions through art.

7. Is social media evil - No, but it can land anywhere on the spectrum between evil and good depending on the particular situation. Usually it’s pretty shitty but without it my life would have taken a totally different course. For instance, I met my fiance through social media 12 years ago when we were teenagers, so I’m grateful for it.

8. Opinion on time - It’s scary as fuck, but one thing that comforts me is thinking about how all our differences will inevitably be swallowed by the ocean of time. What I mean by this is that in several hundred years time me and the person I hate will be seen as virtually one and the same.

David Soul, who has died aged 80, stormed to fame in the 1970s as half of the television “buddies” detective duo Starsky and Hutch, who careered across Los Angeles in their red and white Ford Gran Torino, over the roofs and bonnets of other cars, and through piles of cardboard boxes.

“When the Starsky and Hutch series was showing, police on patrol duty were adopting sunglasses and wearing their gloves with the cuffs turned down,” claimed Kenneth Oxford, a British chief constable. “They also started driving like bloody maniacs.” In south London, a council lowered a wall after fans of the tyre-squealing screen action used it as a launchpad to jump on to parked vehicles.

While Paul Michael Glaser played the streetwise, cardigan-wearing, junk food-eating Dave Starsky, Soul’s character, Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson, was the quieter, yoga-loving, healthy-eating one – two cool cops looking after each other as if they were brothers.

Over five series (1975-79), they patrolled a rough area populated by muggers, drug dealers, sex workers and pimps. They also fraternised with Huggy Bear (played by Antonio Fargas), a snazzily dressed, “jive-talking” informant with his own bar.

Soul traded on his newfound stardom to return to his first love, music. He recorded the ballads Don’t Give Up on Us (1976), a No 1 in the US and UK, and Silver Lady (1977), another British chart-topper.

His television career continued, but the starring roles rarely resonated beyond his homeland. An exception was the miniseries World War III (1982), in which he played an American cold war colonel trying to avert a nuclear holocaust. It also chimed with his political and social campaigning, which included supporting the anti-nuclear movement.

He took up the tempting offer to play Rick Blaine in Casablanca (1983), a five-part TV prequel to the film classic, in the role originally played by Humphrey Bogart, but it proved a flop.

Soul found renewed success – particularly on the West End stage – after moving to Britain in the 90s. He even hit the headlines beyond the review pages in the title role of Jerry Springer the Opera (Cambridge theatre, 2004-05), taking over from another American actor, Michael Brandon, as the “shock” talkshow host.

The BBC’s decision to screen Richard Thomas and Stewart Lee’s musical, complete with thousands of swear words, transvestites, tap-dancers dressed as Ku Klux Klan members and a nappy-wearing Jesus, received more than 60,000 complaints from viewers.

Soul simply relished the chance to fulfil his “dream to play in the birthplace of English-speaking theatre” after failing to “cut the mustard” when auditioning on Broadway.

He was born David Solberg in Chicago to June (nee Nelson), a teacher who had also performed as a singer, and Richard Solberg, a Lutheran minister of Norwegian descent. His father’s work as a representative of the Lutheran World Relief organisation during the reconstruction of Germany after the second world war meant the family moved to Berlin in 1949, returning to the US seven years later to live in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where David attended Washington high school.

He then acted in plays while studying at Augustana College, before moving to Mexico with his family. Influenced by his father’s work, he initially had plans to join the diplomatic service, and learned Spanish and studied Latin American history. He was also taught to play the guitar by Mexican students.

After a year, he hitchhiked to the US, landed a job singing Mexican folk songs at a coffee shop in Minneapolis and set his sights on a career in music. He also gained some acting experience with the city’s Firehouse theatre company.

While talking with friends about the metaphorical masks people wear, he came up with the idea of wearing a real one while performing so that the music stood on its own merits, and billed himself “David Soul, the Covered Man”. The William Morris Agency signed him up after hearing a demo tape, and he soon had bookings. One was in The Merv Griffin Show on TV between 1966 and 1968, when he eventually dispensed with the mask. More significantly, a talent agent spotted his acting potential.

He had a regular role in Here Come the Brides (1968-70), a comedy western series set after the civil war, as Joshua Bolt, one of the brothers running a logging company in a male-dominated Seattle frontier town and importing marriageable women.

A guest star, Karen Carlson, became Soul’s second wife (1968-77), following the dissolution of his first marriage, to Mirriam “Mim” Russeth, in 1966, three years after their wedding.

Soul was then popping up all over American TV in guest roles himself, and had a short run in 1974 as Ted Warrick, the defence lawyer’s assistant, in Owen Marshall, Counselor at Law, before wider fame came in Starsky and Hutch. By then, he was living in an “open” relationship with another actor, Lynne Marta. When he moved on to his third marriage, to Patti (nee Carnel, 1980-86), former wife of the 60s pop idol Bobby Sherman, he hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

In 1982, having already struck Patti several times, he returned home drunk one night following a day’s filming on Casablanca – which he correctly feared would bomb – and hit her repeatedly. He was arrested on a charge of misdemeanour battery, but a judge spared him jail on condition that he underwent therapy. Soul admitted to having a violent streak and, although he and Patti were reunited, the marriage was soon over.

He kept working, landing starring roles as Roy Champion in the cattle ranch soap-style drama The Yellow Rose (1983-84), the private eye of the title in the TV movie Harry’s Hong Kong (1987), and “Wes” Grayson, leading an FBI forensics team, in Unsub (1989), but his star was on the wane. Another marriage, to Julia Nickson (1987-1993), also failed, before he had a relationship with the actor-singer Alexa Hamilton.

Soul’s career was revived when in 1995 the theatre producer Bill Kenwright was looking for an American to star in the comedy thriller Catch Me If You Can on tour in Britain. He played Corban, a newlywed whose wife goes missing. There were other tours and Soul was in the West End as Hank in The Dead Monkey (Whitehall, now Trafalgar, theatre, 1998), Chandler Tate in Alan Ayckbourn’s Comic Potential (Lyric, 1999-2000) and Mack in Mack & Mabel (Criterion, 2006).

In between, he had one-off roles on British television, including as a locum surgeon in two episodes of Holby City (2001 and 2002), a Boston detective helping to investigate his wife’s murder in Dalziel and Pascoe (2004) and a criminology lecturer in Inspector Lewis (2012). Soul and Glaser had cameos in the 2004 film spoof Starsky & Hutch, alongside Ben Stiller as Starsky and Owen Wilson as Hutch. In the same year, Soul was granted British citizenship.

He is survived by his fifth wife, Helen (nee Snell), whom he married in 2010, and five sons and a daughter.

Scandinavian Things to Watch

Somebody asked me for some recommendations in regards to Swedish and/or Norwegian T.V. shows so I figured I'd scour the internet for every show and movie I've ever seen and compile a list.

Now I will note that half of these I wouldn't really recommend. A thing about Norwegian shows, you'll always end up in one of these genres: Crime-Drama, A show about an awkward person or immigrant family navigating Norwegian culture, or an uneventful slice of life adult/family show and somehow, more often than not, some environmentalism plot line is threaded throughout each genre. I'm very used to fast paced dramas featuring teens so Norwegian series are quite the opposite. This is me admitting that I think most Norwegian shows and movies are so slow and boring. Also I hate Crime-Dramas. With that being said, I do try to get through the first couple of episodes/minutes and can recognize when a show is potentially good but if it requires my full attention to keep up, I'm not finishing it. I can't say if this crosses over into Swedish shows and I'm only just starting to get into Danish shows. Some of these are still on my To Be Seen and I definitely forgot to list others but it's been years since I've seen them so...🤷🏽‍♀️

Where To Watch: Most of these are on Netflix. Some were and are now gone, others have been added once I moved to Sweden. Some are on NRK which I used mostly when I was in Norway. You could get by with a VPN but NRK knows when you're using one and you'll have to restart it every two episodes. Viaplay is a Nordic streaming service that's only like 5 bucks a month, accessible anywhere but again, the selection varies depending on location.

Blasted (Netflix) TBS - Comedy, Two dudes fight aliens

Royalteen (Netflix) Drama, An average girl gets a prince to fall in love with her. In Royalteen 2, we follow the prince's sister who's working through personal issues.

Thelma (Netflix, Viaplay) TBS GAY - Horror, Something about romance and magic powers?

The Man Who Loved Yngve (Idk) TBS GAY - Drama, Romance

Norwegian Dream (Idk) TBS GAY - Coming of Age, Drama

Det Norske Hus (Netflix) - Comedy, A man crosses the boarder to attend a school that will teach him how to be Norwegian

The Lion Woman (Used to be on Netflix) - Whimsical Drama, A man protects a young hairy girl from being the town freak

The Affair (Viaplay) - Dark Drama, featuring Tarjei Sandvik Moe or Isak from Skam, A student gets dirty with a teacher and then stalks the teacher

Kitchen Stories (Idk) - Comedy? I had to watch this for school. I found it boring but Norwegian people like it. An Anthropologist(?) watches over a Norwegian man to study how Norwegians use kitchens

Norwegian Shows:

SKAM GAY for a season- Come on, you can't be on Tumblr and NOT know this show. This listing includes EVERY remake. Especially the American one (it's on NRK you nords) Every non-American only hates it because our culture is so different from Europe's, its giving xenophobia. Find the shows yourself, it's a rite of passage.

Ligga (Discovery+) TBS GAY- Comedy, featuring Ulrikke Falch, Vilde from Skam, A girl gets dumped and discovers casual sex. To be seen because I think it's only on Discovery Plus in Norway.

Ragnorok (Netflix) GAY for like 2 minutes - Mythology, featuring sexy babes from Skam Magnus, P. Cris, and my gf Sonja. The story of Thor versus the Giants. Fun Fact I actually don't care about this show, mainly this genre of show, but I challenged myself to watch it entirely in Norwegian without subtitles since season one and it's done so I win.

Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes (Netflix) TBS - Dark Comedy, Funeral directors get up to some morally corrupt shenanigans. I got half way through the first episode and gave up.

Øyevitne TBS (Eyewitness U.S. version on the USA Network) GAY- Crime Thriller, I haven't seen the original yet bc I can't find it anywhere. Also I said I didn't like this genre but the Scandis do know how to make 'em. Two boys witness a murder that could solve a massive crime ring but are too scared to come forward bc they don't wanna be outed as ~lovers~ The acting in the American version is a little rough but don't let that stop you! This is the only English speaking show on this list.

Ida Tar Ansvar (Viaplay) - Ironic Comedy? A girl who is just terrified of the real world befriends an Incel in hopes of changing him/saving women. The main actress is also in Royalteen and the main actor is actually Kasper from Skam!

Lillyhammer (Used to be on Netflix) - Crime Comedy, An old American gangster moves to a small part of Lillehammer, Norway to hide and life ensues. This was actually the first Norwegian series I watched post-Skam. There's speaking parts in both Norwegian and English but it's an American show. I still recommend it.

Norsemen (Netflix) - Mockumentary, It kind of feels like a Viking Version of The Office. I've seen a few episodes but the humor is very Norwegian and it didn't stick for me.

Beforeigners (Amazon Prime Video) - Drama, Time travelers from the Viking/Stone Age era end up in Modern day Norway. We follow a Detective Traveler Woman solve crimes. I never finished it bc I forgot it existed lol.

Exit (Viaplay, NRK) - Drama, We follow as a bunch of rich people be absolutely terrible human beings. Tbh, I only got to like episode 3, they're just too long.

The Architect (Viaplay) TBS - Drama, I couldn't tell you shit about this show. I got through the first episode and had no idea what was going on but it's filmed very stylistically and I can see it being enjoyable for someone out there.

Delete Me (Viaplay) TBS - Dark Drama, A sex tape gets out and causes problems for many students at this school. I haven't seen it yet bc the plot doesn't interest me but someone else highly recommended it.

Lik Meg (NRK) - Teen Drama, Two girls' friendship gets tested when they enter the 7th grade. I tried watching this when I was in Norway to fill the Skam void but it's definitely geared towards younger audiences so I didn't get far.

19 (NRK) - Same as above, Each season follows a character of a different age so the title of the show changes too I think. I don't know, here's the Wiki. This show focuses on third culture kids.

Skitten Snø (NRK) TBS - Dark Drama, again featuring our child Tarjei Sandvik Moe as he struggles with friendship but in a creepy way? It's hard to find a good description of this one.

Peppa Gris (NRK) - I literally just watched Peppa Pig in Norwegian for language learning purposes. That, Shrek(DVD), Frozen(Illegally) and also Vivo(Netflix).

Klassen (NRK) - Teen Drama, again really geared towards younger audiences. It's a very Disney-like show. I never finished it.

Pørni [or Pernille] (NRK, Netflix, Viaplay) GAY for like 2 minutes - Family Drama/Comedy following a social worker and mother navigating life after her sisters death, her father coming out, and her kids getting older. The characters are all genuinely funny in an endearing way to watch, and it shows genuine/sweet love between older people.

Swedish Movies: (I haven't seen these but they look good)

Black Crab (Netflix) TBS - Dark Drama, A solider has to cross a frozen sea with precious cargo to stop an apocalyptic war.

Låt Den Rätte Komma In (It's online free somewhere & on Swedish Netflix) TBS (Let Me In U.S. version) - Thriller, Something about a vampiric killer kid. I really like the American version so I wanna give the OG a shot.

A Man Called Ove (Netflix, Viaplay) TBS - Drama Comedy, A grumpy old man is mean to his neighbors after the death of his wife, he learns how to enjoy life again, I think.

JJ+E (Netflix) TBS - Teen Drama/Romance, A third culture boy and a Swedish girl fall in love. Will they make it?

Kyss Mig (Viaplay, Used to be on Netflix) TBS GAY - Drama, A young woman who is engaged begins an affair with her future stepmother's lesbian daughter (Can we consider that incest?).

Swedish Shows:

Sjukt (NRK) - Drama Comedy, Loosely based on the life of Young Royals Creator, Lisa Ambjörn. A young women finds a new lease on life after beating Ovarian Cancer. I enjoyed half of it but would rather finish it on a site that isn't NRK.

Young Royals (Netflix) - Teen Drama, beautiful amazing talented show stopping never been done before... A young prince gets sent to a boarding school to tighten up his act when jealousy causes things to fall apart all around him. Obviously recommend.

Gåsmamman (Amazon Prime Video) - Crime Drama, Featuring Young Royals star, Edvin Ryding, as one of the sons to a widowed mother caught up in a crime ring left by her husband. Turns out it goes deeper than what she was expecting. Brace yourself for this intense 6 season, 46 episode long show.

Kontoret (Swedish version of The Office) TBS - Exactly what it sounds like. I haven't bothered to look into it further but it could be fun to see the cultural differences and Swedish nuances.

Quicksand (Netflix) - Dark Drama, also a good one, After a school shooting we follow a girl who was somehow involved. As the plot unravels we find out exactly how. Features Felix Sandman if you're a fan of him.

One More Time (Netflix) TBS - Comedy, I literally just added this to my list. It's "17 Again" mixed with Disney's "16 Wishes."

Thunder in my Heart (Viaplay) TBS - Coming of Age/Family Drama. A lot of these Swedish shows on Viaplay don't have English subtitles so, dead end.

Älska mig (Viaplay) TBS - Drama/Romance, Familiar faces: Edvin Ryding of Young Royals/Gåsmamman! Little stories about people finding and navigating romance.

Ej Kjem (NRK) - Scandalous Drama, A show about a girl navigating life and SEXuality. I couldn't get far with it because it's only in Swedish with NYNORSK subtitles??

Clark (Netflix) TBS - Biography/Comedy? Bill Skarsgård! The unbelievable story of Clark Olofsson, the man who inspired the phrase "Stockholm Syndrome."

Danish Movies:

The Bombardment (Netflix) TBS - Wartime Drama, Based on true events, a WWII bomb hits a school in Copenhagen. (Also if you didn't know, there was A LOT happening with Sweden, Norway, and Denmark during WWII and so there are TONS of good Scandinavian movies set during then. I didn't list them because I'm just not that big a fan of the genre but the history's crazy.)

Danish Shows:

Seaside Hotel (Viaplay) GAY for like 2 seconds but idk if more happens I'm still watching - Drama, set some time in the 1920s. Various kooky guests check into this hotel every summer and life happens, drama unfolds. I was just starting to really get into it but for some reason Viaplay in Sweden doesn't have it 😡.

The Rain (Netflix) - Survival Drama, Toxic rain falls from the sky wiping out almost all humanity. One boy is the cure. Does he save and restore all humankind? I don't know I never finished it. This was when the survival genre was at an all time high. It's a good show but I just couldn't take it anymore.

Rita (Netflix) - Drama Comedy, Rita is an independent girl boss mother who has funny relationships with everyone around her. It's been years since I've seen it but it was pretty popular to the Danes.

Elves (Netflix) TBS - Horror Drama, It's evil elves at Christmas time. I haven't seen it yet but it doesn't look like it's gotten good reviews.

The Chestnut Man (Netflix) TBS - Crime Drama, A creepy chestnut toy links together murders and might be the answer to a politician's missing child.

One of the Boys (Viaplay) GAY - Coming of Age, short drama series. A boy gets sent on this "How to be a man" retreat and flips between changing himself to fit in and accepting his oddball self with this other outsider who is "totally not gay" but I literally don't believe that and it's total queer baiting but there's a kiss scene and it's such a short and easy watch that why not give a chance.

It was kind of hard choosing what regional dress to draw each of the Nordics in - there are so many beautiful ones! And don't even get me started on the women's dresses. There are hundreds of unique traditional costumes in each of the Nordic countries because each region or even town might have its own dress. Plus all costumes are handmade and thus very unique!

Though these regional clothes are fairly modern inventions, most of which were created or constructed during the age of national romanticism. They're inspired by the common clothing worn in the 17th-19th century but don't take them as accurate historical reconstructions. Their usage in the modern age depends a lot. In some parts of the Nordic lands, they can be used as formal wear, while in others the traditional clothes are primarily used by folk dancers as costumes. Importantly; there are ethnic minorities in Nordic countries who use their traditional clothes not as formal costumes but as an inseparable part of their culture and identity in everyday life, such as the Sámi and Romani people

What attire is each of the Nordics wearing in this post:

Norway is wearing men's bunad from Hallingdall. Norway has the biggest and most visible folk dress traditions in the Nordic countries. The bunad is a great pride for Norwegians, and it's quite common to see them worn on festive occasions, like during the Constitution Day. Bunads are sometimes viewed as status symbols since they're costly and take a very long time to make - but also highly respected and sought after! Just the details alone are breathtaking. Norway's folk costume tradition is very unique, and celebrated by the people - which I personally find really beautiful

Iceland is wearing the men's traditional dress - (Þjóð)búningur karla. Iceland has technically a few different folk outfits, but this one is considered the national dress, and it resembles the folk dresses in continental Nordics. Even though there are certain standardized styles, no two costumes are exactly the same. They're all handstitched, and each designer gives it their own twist, with different patterns and colors!

Denmark is wearing men's traditional clothing from Northern Zealand (Nordsjælland). Denmark's national dresses can usually be detected by their longer vests and coats. Danish national dresses are used almost solely by folk dancers nowadays. Back in the day, your occupation determined what kind of clothes you'd wear: fishermen wore long trousers, while millers wore white, so the flour wouldn't ruin your clothes. The proud and far more common usage of national clothes is concentrated in the Faroe Islands and Greenland, with completely different and unique dresses from the Danish ones

Finland is wearing men's traditional clothing from Southern Ostrobothnia (Etelä-Pohjanmaa). Finland's national dresses are used in folk dances and increasingly more in festivities - especially in national celebrations, such as the Independence Day Reception. Probably the most recognizable folk dresses of Finland are the Ostrobothnian ones - with their black brim hats and elaborate golden belts, holding the beautiful traditional knives

Sweden is wearing men's traditional clothing from Uppland. Uniquely, Sweden actually has a general Swedish national dress, that can be worn by anyone regardless of their region, called Sverigedräkten. It was popularized by the royal family. But Sweden is home to hundreds of regional dresses, and neighboring villages can have huge disparities. And each regional costume is full of color and detail. Fun fact; Bäckadräkte is the first non-binary Swedish folk dress, and the colors of the costume are inspired by the trans flag. Pretty cool, so I decided to draw Sweden himself in one, found at the beginning of the post <3
