stellina's shed cycle is messed up and she doesn't normally start to drop her winter coat until the end of summer/early fall, so i had her scheduled today for a de-shed treatment at the groomer to help speed things up. we normally do this a few times a year and it's always worked out well, gets a ton of hair out of her. but because it's always just been baths and paw trims i guess i never... mentioned to them to not cut the bangs. and so when i got the call to come pick her up and was told "hey she's just about ready, she's being really good today we've gotten a lot of hair out, i'm just going to trim up around her ears and sanitary for you ok?" i said "ok sure!" without a second thought.

FIFTH times the charm, I guess

Okay, so, preface: I made some posts about this a while ago, forgot to expand, got an anon about it earlier, proceeded to try and answer the ask upwards of 3 times only for the Tumblr to eat the response. I've had A Time. So, I'm gonna try and keep this as short and sweet as I can while still being semi-comprehensive and making sense!

People have pointed out that based on the photo below (showing the remains of the grimwalkers in the Golden Graveyard™ as i call it) and the timeline we're given (350~ years), there's no way Belos could've raised all of them to maturity.

The Golden Guards are also generally there to be useful to Belos, so I think it's unlikely he's killing all of them before they get the chance to. so, maybe they just age quick!

BUT I don't think it'd make sense, at this point in the story, to reveal in or outside the text that Hunter is going to age rapidly and die decades before all his loved ones. It's never been foreshadowed, wouldn't make sense story wise, and would just be A Bit Much imo.

Hence, I'd like to propose a radical solution, in the form...of horse math

I'm not gonna pretend to know much about horses. I don't. BUT, I did discover that unlike, say, dogs where 1 human year is 7 dog years, there isn't a fixed equivalent between horse years and human years! It shifts over time. The chart explains it better than I could. So, my proposal is thus: grimwalkers age like horses in the sense that they begin life with a different aging rate compared to regular witches, but this changes as they get older, presumably evening out to be about the same as a normal witches (I imagine they probably speed through childhood cause Belos is not raising a bunch of gross babies for multiple years on his own lmao). This handily solves both problems, while also being hilarious, because by this logic, i can say that THIS:

I want to write a Vanyel/Stefen modern-with-magic AU soooo bad but I don’t know Valdemar lore like at all. There are six books standing between me and feeling comfortable enough in the lore to imagine what Valdemar might look like with the internet and planes

#anyway I have unhinged ideas about what modern Valdemar #like. I’m imagining Valdemar as a prosperous #happy country with a high level of social development and technology #public transit everywhere. universal basic income/free high quality healthcare/etc #like. not utopian. not by a long shot. #but overall doing well (at least in comparison to some of the other countries on Velgarth) #HOWEVER they are having this really divisive cultural moment about Heralds and the King #bc they’re basically appointed by a completely unaccountable higher power? and they have so much direct influence and control over #the life of an average person??? why should that be allowed? #so there’s a movement for direct democracy which is very successful at a local level #and is slowly making its way into higher levels of the government #and there’s suddenly intense scrutiny on the heralds. so when Vanyel gets caught up in a series of scandals it does a LOT of damage to #the institution of the heralds. but Vanyel is very very important to the security of the world #bc he successfully prevented the detonation of a nuclear weapon a few years earlier so he’s sort of the only thing standing between #the world and nuclear war #anyway I think that setting is way too dramatic for a weird gay fanfiction. so I’m workshopping it #vanyel ashkevron #last herald mage #gay herald in a squirrel suit
