Okay hear me out You know what we (I) really need? Waka in full on Kill Mode. I mean, we've seen how capable he is in both of his fights in the game AND he went mano-e-mano with frickin YAMI of all things AND survived two canon genocides AND has survived after that for two hundred years, and yeah he was totally going easy on Ammy during those two fights, but what about when he isn't holding back and can cut loose? Two swords, zero mercy. I bet he's actually freaking TERRIFYING.

Spookami 2023 [Prompt 14 - Eyes]
I'm not gonna be the one to say it out loud, but... there's something... off about the captain in Sei-An, right?
Drifting a little bit into headcanon territory here, but you're really gonna tell me you had a whole race of folks living on the moon and expect me not to think they'd have some uncanny shit going on? Clearly you don't know me very well.
(Shading with night-time lighting is turning out to be a lot of fun y'all)

Moon Tribe headcanons nobody asked for because I went digging through my old blog for my 10-year-old posts and I can't stop thinking about them!!
First, I think they are related to the Celestials at least by a common ancestor. Their relationship is never explained, but it doesn't seem like coincidence that both of them have gold hair and pointy ears and live in space.
Personally I like to think that the Moon Tribe are the descendants of Celestials who were exiled ages ago. This plays on the exile of Tsukuyomi to the night and of Wu Gang/Katsuura Otoko to the moon as a punishment in their respective legends. I also think a lot how "A Resolute Person", one of Waka's themes, is also a dark, tense version of the Celestials' Theme...
Since then, distanced from Takamagahara, they lost much of their divine power, but maintained their longevity and some magic. They became obsessed with developing mechanical technology, and missing their lush homeland, used it to reform the barren Moon into something more habitable. Then they turned their gaze to the earth/Nippon.
AFAIK the timelime on anything the Moon Tribe did was never established. But here's how I imagine it. Before the calamity, the Moon Tribe came to Nippon and birthed the civilization we now see the ruins of. They learned how to harness lightning, built things like Tsuta Ruins and the Daidarabotchi. The aesthetic of the dogu and Clay Dolls is consistent with other stuff we see from the moon--and also the missiles Yami launches in its fourth phase.
Which brings me to the next part: the Moon Tribe at least partly created Yami and other bosses/demons. The art book describes the interior of the Ark of Yamato as a sort of lab where these beings were being raised. To what end? To wage war, perhaps--against the Celestials, either as an act of revenge, or for some reason that resulted in their exile to begin with--or perhaps against the faction down in Nippon. The demons were either created or found, and then augmented with the Moon Tribe's technology. Eventually war broke out. Yami, bound to the Ark, and the augmented demons take over the machines and wipe everyone out. The Moon Tribe can't stand up to their own creations. Orochi escapes in the chaos. Only the four known Lunarians survived--Sugawara had already been sent to Nippon in exile by a corrupted lunar government. Baby Kaguya was sent away Superman-style to save her. Kurow is... doing something. And Waka (unknowingly, somehow?) escapes on the Ark. Orochi, grown stronger, finds the Celestial Plain via the pull of the Ark and the power it shares with the demons.
Whatever was done to create Yami was brutal. It resents the Moon Tribe, the gods, those who can create, for it cannot. It only knows destruction, death with no divine respite. With all others dead, it knows Waka escaped, and its priority is the extinction of the Moon Tribe.
When Kaguya returns to the Moon, she finds a desolate waste, littered with strange metal and stone. The machines that helped maintain life on the Moon are broken, the silver gardens turned to dust. Only her rocket still glows. Sugawara never had a chance to meet her, to tell her what she is and what she would find. But in the ruins, an unimaginable story reveals itself to her. Maybe she finds her new life as its keeper and chronicler.

I was immediately smitten with Hayabusa when I first played Okami.
I considered him my husband and shipped myself (Ammy) with him.
It blew my MIND when he wound up being more than just another dog... He was a whole dude and I had to fight him and he used his digging techniques because of course he would have digging combat moves!!!! He had an entire PRECIOUS backstory, and I actually teared up the moment he saved Mushi from Orochi's arrow.
Here I'm pictured carrying him (side note: I wish you could still carry him after you find out he's a canine warrior ): ), fucking him????????? jumping with him, digging shenanigans, and cracking open a cold one with the boys
He's a Kai Ken apparently, which is 1/6 Japanese breeds alongside the Shiba Inu. I've only ever seen one kai ken plushie and it's fuckin $50 😭😭😭

Shimadacest headcanon #29 (featuring Young Genji and Okami(ish) Hanzo):
Genji rolls his eyes, but he dutifully blows out the candles on his birthday cake to placate his friends.
Hanzo understands. Genji has always tried to puff up his chest and act more "mature", only to fall back on juvenile behavior whenever temptation presented itself, and the contrast between his aspirations and his actions is all the greater when he's been comparing himself to Hanzo, his older brother.
His much, much, much older brother, by the looks of things.
But it's partially appearances that are to blame. Hanzo is only in his early forties, and he has maintained an active lifestyle that has kept...most...of the wrinkles away, but hardly anyone looks past his hair.
It's long, luxurious, and looks oh-so-soft to the touch, whether it cascades past his shoulders or hangs in two carefully braided plaits on each shoulder, but it's also perfectly white.
Hanzo had gone completely "gray" by age 25.
It's fine. Even when the first streaks of white began appearing when he was Genji's age, Hanzo couldn't bring himself to care too much about it. So long as his body was ripped and firm, he couldn't care less about his hair...and neither did a certain subset of very enthusiastic lovers, drawn in by the contrast of his youthful face and shockingly white hair.
Many of them even say he looks like a hero out of an old legend, and is that doesn't stroke his ego...
But poor Genji, so much younger than Hanzo, has always felt the pain of being compared with a brother who, on top of being mature because he is mature, is also far less adventurous and daring...
...nowadays.
Genji might catch some flak for his antics, but Hanzo is sure at least half the problem is that their relatives only saw the responsible, thoughtful adult Hanzo had grown into, and somehow they expected Genji to jump directly from playful child to responsible adult with no rascally juvenile in-between.
Hanzo might roll his eyes and bap Genji on the head after his little brother did something truly idiotic, but the years had given him perspective, and he couldn't bring himself to begrudge Genji enjoying the short, short time of his youth.
Even now Hanzo was preparing for an...interesting time, when Genji would finally be free to fully indulge himself. He was an adult now, and he wouldn't have to hide the bottles of liquor in his bedroom or sneak into the most popular clubs anymore.
Hanzo expected to receive a lot of midnight phone calls in the months ahead. Genji would calm down after he thoroughly overindulged, and while Hanzo would be watching over him to make sure he didn't get into any real trouble, he had faith in his little brother's ultimate good sense and good character.
With that in mind, he caught Genji's eye from where he sat on the far side of the room, Genji looking over, radiant and happy amidst his sea of friends, and raised his glass in a silent toast of congratulations.
Genji grinned back and raised his own glass full of his "first" glass of liquor before draining it in a few gulps to the laughter of his friends.
Then he set the glass down on the table.
And fixed Hanzo with a look.
Hanzo stared back.
Genji looked...
His little brother looked...
Hungry.
Then, when Genji saw that he had his brother's attention, he licked his lips.
A shiver ran through Hanzo.
And that was his first warning about what Genji wanted to indulge in first.

If Gareth had to choose, he'd say Rowan is his absolute favorite caregiver. Sure, he loves Okami a lot too, but Rowan is still his favorite. After all, Rowan did help him out of the worst place in his life. But he has another reason for choosing Rowan too.
He thinks Rowan gives the best hugs and cuddles (don't tell Okami!)

Moving helps. Maybe only a little, but it at least shakes your thoughts loose enough to start sorting yourself out.
Okay, think through this. You’re alone, injured, and your only source of shelter and supplies is now deep in the middle of the lake (not to mention filled with demons, so even if it wasn’t flooded and freezing over...) The wind has picked up since the crash, ice and snow stinging at your eyes and wounds. It’s only getting darker; you need to find somewhere to hunker down for the night.
Checking your clothes, your fingers brush across a few tablets, as well as the familiar shape of Pillow Talk. That’s a relief; the idea of running into demons again unarmed makes your stomach churn a bit too much to handle right now. Not that you’re really in fighting shape at the moment. Who would be, falling from the heavens at the hands of demons?
... You miss Amaterasu. You hope wherever she is in this realm of mortals, she’s doing better than you are. After all, she made this plunge not long before you did, dragging that accursed serpent with her. Hopefully the wait for the chosen one’s birth won’t be terribly long; your vision wasn’t kind enough to give you a turnaround time.
The thought of her waiting keeps you moving, enough to stumble--near literally--into the first structure in the snow. It’s... a gate. A rather large one, easily towering far above your head. The heavy wooden doors have been tightly closed, but there is a second entrance nearby. More importantly, with the way it creaks and sways on its hinges, you’re pretty sure that one’s unlocked.
It’s a slim chance that whoever lives beyond here would welcome strangers--especially with their main gate closed--but if your choices  for wandering are potential civilization and a frozen lakeshore, a slim chance is better to take than none at all.
You take a breath deep enough to make your ribs ache, and carefully push the door open enough to duck through. Last time you landed somewhere strange, you were quickly found by the Celestials, who in turn were gracious enough to take you in. You wonder, in this world of howling wind and icy storms, who will be there to meet you this time.
