While it's different from my usual style I really loved how this came out! #Strolling back to the art scene to remind everyone I am still a lover of botanicals. #I had a blast with the symbolism for this one: #White lilium longiflorum (easter lily) for rebirth. Purple hyacinthus orientalis for sorrow and forgiveness. #Red spider lily (Lycoris radiata) for loss and death. #'Rebirth into something new' is so well done in Dungeon Meshi. She is back but she is not the same. #The last few episodes/chapters gives her this dreamy quality to her. As if she's not quite real. She's so perfect in their memories. #And as we know of dreams - no matter how sweet- they must end once we wake up. #It is so painful to lose someone twice. To see someone you loved in a dream and wake up and remember that loss again. #Dungeon Meshi being a grief allegory is important to me. I'll explain more as the story continues B'*)

For the Laicion nation (aka, me and three other people)

I had this illustration commissioned (a big thank you to @lunehowls) for my werewolf AU Laicion fic (still a WIP).

The general pitch is as follows :

AU in which Laios never got to meet his sister again, putting his life on a whole other path, a more desperate one. A military deserter with barely a coin to his name, Laios hitches a ride on a boat to one of the elven continents, where he learns about magical tattoos that binds one’s soul to a wolf’s, effectively making them artificial werewolves. Illegal magic be damned, this feels like the answer to… everything.

In the process, he learns about the existence of an illegal fighting ring in one of the elven cities, where beastmen gladiators gather. Freshly tattooed and without anywhere else to go to, Laios decides to head there, where he meets Lycion, an elf and artificial werewolf gladiator. If they first bond over a simple shared meal, by spending time together (sharing the same room in the barracks, maybe the same bed? gasp) they find that they have a lot in common, notably a shared distaste for the body they were born in, a dysphoria partially remedied by becoming a werewolf.

Really fascinating stuff. #I bemoan the fact that most papers are locked behind a paywall (though I found one that gives a free pdf access) #(and no. Sci-hub is not an option. It's blocked in my country) #I'm also re-reading DunMeshi and taking notes to get a better grasp of Laios and Lycion as characters. Character studies if you will #and I still need to fully outline the fic #I know where I'm starting (struggling to choose a POV for that first chapter LOL) and where I'm ending so there's that #and a bunch of disconnected scenes (as we all do ahaha) #anyway. Doing all of this while studying for veterinary school. It's hard. I feel guilty whenever I'm not studying... #let's just say I don't expect the prep work for the fic to be ready before this summer (+ I need to finish the Kuro cosplay for Japan Expo) #hopefully; once it's done; I'll be able to set a schedule and write smoothly #werewolf #werewolf laios #rarepair

There's something about reading really great writing that's so relaxing. You can just sit back and let the words wash over you, knowing that you can trust the writer.

#random thought of the day #books #part of the reason i'm not getting writing done today was because i spent most of my free time reading from books i've let sit for too long #i haven't been able to sink into good fiction for a while #so elizabeth goudge felt like a spiritual experience #cleansing and uplifting #it always takes me a while to get into her books #there's a learning curve of a couple of chapters to adjust to the style #but once i break through it's bliss #it becomes easy as breathing #there's nothing quite like what she does #i love books that understand that goodness isn't boring or trite #you don't need to have 'darkness' and 'grit' to be complex #like one bit that took my breath away was the talk about sallie and david's marriage struggles #they're both good people who love each other #but they also have their differences because they're human and that causes struggles #not marriage-breaking struggles just nuanced life struggles #and i'm not sure i've seen something like that in a book before #it's a good marriage they married the right people but that doesn't mean life is perfect #goudge uderstands that marriage isn't happily ever after--heaven is #and a good marriage is two people partnering up to help each other reach that goal #it's so much more adult than any 'complex adult' work i've seen

Genuinely. Not asking for a new update on anything. How long does it take to write you a chapter is the stars align and you have a time? Because your chapters are long and you pumped out 4 COTL chapters in like a month and they all have the same level of quality and I'm here impressed and worried

reading whipping girl again and I’m still stuck on Serano’s critique of the “social constructionist” model of gender, seen here:

Unfortunately, a strict social constructionist model does not easily account for exceptional gender expression either. Many girls who are masculine and boys who are feminine show signs of such behaviour at a very early age (often before such children have been fully socialised with regard to gender norms), and generally continue to express such behaviour into adulthood (despite the extreme amount of societal pressure that we place on individuals to reproduce gender expression appropriate for their assigned sex). This strongly suggests that certain expressions of femininity and masculinity represent deep, subconscious inclinations in a manner similar to those of sexual orientation and subconscious sex. […] While I believe that such inclinations are hardwired into our brains (as they exist on a subconscious level and often remain constant throughout our lives), I hesitate to define them as purely biological phenomena, as social factors clearly play a strong role in how each individual interprets these inclinations. (p 98, 2nd edition)

I don’t think she’s actually demonstrated how a failure to respond to cisgender and heterosexual gender norms is biological in nature, unless you assume that the only way a person can “socially” respond to societal pressure is by accepting it fully. Am I “biologically” a communist because I failed to accept the hegemonic liberal values that are pushed on us since birth? Liberalism is arguably just as engrained in my society (ie, Canadian society) as cisgender norms are. Trans resistance to cisgenderism can just as easily be argued on social grounds, because the resistance is itself a response to social pressure. I also disagree that children can exist in a pre-social state, that children are a blank slate whose earliest expressions of gender indicate some biological mechanism that precedes social expectations. Who takes care of you, the food you have access to, the type of housing you live in, the toys and activities available to you, what media you are exposed to, the levels of medical and social support your mother received prior to giving birth to you - these are all social! Those things are all deeply involved in the social production of gender! Children cannot exist outside of society anymore than adults can, and I think it does a disservice to the autonomy of children to ascribe any gender deviance they may express as simply biological, out of their control. They are expressing things that they witness in the world, and just because they aren’t doing it “correctly,” the way they “ought to,” does not mean there is some hidden biological mechanism that produces this deviance.

#i've decided that after i've recovered from surgery i want a glow up!!! #i want to make an effort to try to feel better nd not be so miserable all the time. it's so draining nd soul sucking :< #nd some things i wanna do is start better habits such as journaling nd reading a chapter every morning #meditate/do mindfulness every evening. do a full body stretch routine once a day. go to the gym 3-5 times a week. #ofc daily walks in nature (i've missed that sm). spending time w my cat nd dog. getting better at studying a little bit every day #i might even bleach my hair nd dye it... i just wanna dye it one last time then im done T-T #smth im unsure of is my diet. i have no idea what i can eat nd atm im so hungry but im scared of eating. so i'll have to figure that out #nd then try to meet up w my old high school friend every now nd again #try to keep asking for help from the personality disorder psychiatric clinic... or try to get online therapy maybe??? #i just wanna feel better nd *do* smth so these r some of the thinngs i wanna try to do to feel better :3 #hopefully i'll feel better soon nd recover as swiftly as possible so i can start wanting to do these things #oh and also!! wanna try to revive my interests. such as writing more nd taking photos nd such
