i really like your thoughts on cql/mdzs so i was wondering what are your thoughts on wei wuxian and wen qing? i feel like cql gave them such a great and developed friendship but the fandom ignores it SO much, it's so upsetting. they were best friends imo. and i feel like if wen qing came back post canon, she and wei wuxian would still be close

thank you, anon! I feel like it depends what parts of the fanbase you're around. a lot of my mutuals love wq and wwx, and a lot of fics I read feature her as wwx's best friend, or at least someone very close. but it's a big fandom, and plenty do ignore her in favor of other characters - after all, wwx is close with a lot of people

but I love wwx and wq, their story is so powerful and tragic. I agree that it's a rich friendship, right from the very beginning, wq immediately clocking wwx as Younger Brother and seeing his kindness towards wen ning, starting to like him despite herself, to sheltering him and the jiangs after the wen attack - something she may have done for jyl, but imo not for jc. and wwx sacrificing everything - his home, his reputation, his family - all to protect wq and her family. it's build on the humanity of these two characters who helped each other when no other person in the world would have, at great cost to themselves. and they built and co-ran a little village there in the burial mounds arguing over what vegetables to grow and who does laundry. it's some of the sweetest domestic scenes we ever get, and it's in the midst of all this death. wwx may have been the one to make living in the BM possible, but I always loved how wq was a groundbreaking genius in her own right. mad scientist buddies, indeed

and wwx and wq were similar in other ways. wwx is a tragic figure, but wen qing is arguably even moreso. from her first appearance, she seemed to carry a melancholy with her, like she knew she was doomed from the start and it tore her heart because her family just meant so much to her. her decision to turn herself in felt like the inevitable conclusion of a painful life, though not one without its joys. I can't even say how much it ruins me that her last words to wwx were significant enough for him to repeat them in his new life to his nephew and partner. it kills me how little she's talked about postres despite wwx clearly loving her deeply, and missing her, and probably seeing a lot of himself in her (and vice versa)

finally, I absolutely agree about them being friends postres, had she survived! their dynamic in BM made it clear how well they worked together and how well they knew each other, how they looked after each other and took care of each other. I can see her coming back and wanting to remain independent, though. I don't think she ever liked being in anyone's debt, and that's probably part of why she turned herself and her brother in. but if coming back was a fresh start for wwx, then it would be for wq as well. free to live their lives independently and parallel, seeing each other if they like but no longer bound in life and death together. I think it's clear how much wq loved wwx, too. but that return to normalcy probably would have been welcome

Yiling date. Just one of the sweetest scenes. Probably as close as they come to actually seeing and understanding one another in the first life, and the conclusion is... their paths have to part. Speaking of which...

Wangji cries in the rain. What a great moment. I have lots of Views on how CQL structures the romance very differently from MDZS, and this scene is one of the key pieces of evidence that, for me, they already have a pretty good idea of how they feel about one another even at this stage. Rain! Drama! Self-sacrifice! And again, there's no other path either of them can take.

Guanyin Temple confession. Not the time, not the place, not the words either of them probably intended to use. Ruining everyone else's day. Just the distillation of classic Wangxian.

"Me and Lan Zhan are gay life partners, too!" Wei Wuxian trying to show off for and connect to Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen is just so sweet and so funny and so authentically baby gay I refuse to believe it wasn't on purpose.

SVSSS mains - I have to keep it real y’all are a bunch of edgelords, and smug as hell but I’m finna allow it because your (reluctant) gong is the sweetest (sqq if you topped him he might not cry! Just a thought. Ok he might cry less) and you’re right, witty meta with one (1) harrowing scene of like borderline consensual non con (if your focus is sqq) or just plain non con (if your focus is lbh? But the perpetrator is the system? a sword? Their partner trying to save their life?) ent for everyone and people misunderstand your chaotic ass text a lot, because they don’t want to ask difficult questions about ‘what consent even means’ and ‘the intricacies of a meta take on a genre that is from a culture they did not grow up in and found out about on tumblr’ So you know. Y’all are horny as hell, which makes sense cus your leads were stunning and push hard at the F of RPF, let’s keep it real. All these danmei characters are pretty dark, but yours don’t have a war to hide behind, they’re just like that, (I’m over simplifying, sometimes you have to eat your daddy to survive and that’s ok 😭😭) so you are the most feral of them all. Congratulations. Winter Begonia mains - the thing is, you want people to sit with you! Your show is beautiful in every way, and you advocate for it so softly, with such love. But you look like high art and it’s scaring the sluts away. Make some memes!

Sleuth mains - this fandom seems to divide cleanly into 30 somethings that are tired and might wake up in the middle of the night to strangle you at the slightest provocation and gender fuckers that want to be topped by Jin San and honestly? Mood. Y’all are kinkier than you’d think, much like the source material, but mostly you are just here to eat and sigh wistfully at Fu Meng Paul thirst traps while you write service top porn. If you read that as a RongZhi main and couldn’t see yourself you need to read it again.

Qi Ye mains - we get it, you can read, and yes, ZZS is darker than we ever knew and JBY is more of a mess and we need to be more scared of Wu Xi than we are, and Helian Yi is not prince Jin. Counter point: Prince Jin is a simp and it’s FUNNY, it’s nice having Xiyuan as like, ethereal couple goals and ZZS kills a toddler in SHL and then dumps WKX just for REMINDING HIM, we know what he is, even if he is pretending he does not see. It’s a real good and funny book though, you’re right.

Thousand autumn mains - one guy in your animation looks pretty hot and slutty with his shirt all open and the non jiang purple but you never really sell it, come on! Do some evangelism, we’re never getting HYX so I may as well read something.

BONUS nirvana in fire (it’s not a danmei but if you don’t watch it they take your non problematic consumer card away, and do you know what? That’s fair) - y’all are sophisticated. Smart. Aesthetes. You’re here for POETIC CINEMA, and will accept nothing less. But no one needs your meta, the show is clever enough on its own, stand down. Make some memes instead. CQL Rewatch - Ep 22

It feels so good to see these two together, talking about old times, and most importantly, not arguing. It's as if this was the conversation that was meant to happen back in Yiling, but it didn't because emotions were too high. I guess it's true that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Wei Wuxian has time to think about and come to the understanding that Lan Wangji isn't fighting him, but instead showing concern. And Lan Wangji gets to hear Wei Wuxian's side of the story, about what he did those three months in the Burial Grounds. It's so refreshing to have this release after so much tension had built up, where the two of them are just open and honest with each other. And you can see how Wei Wuxian's relationship with Lan Wangji is different from his relationship to everyone else. While we get to see him being vulnerable with Jiang Yanli, he won't tell her everything; we see him connecting with Jiang Cheng again, but as is his temperament, Jiang Cheng is often flippant and dismissive, and only really cares that Wei Wuxian is back within the Jiang Clan fold. Lan Wangji really cannot be satisfied until he knows what's been going on; he wants to be reassured that Wei Wuxian is okay in both mind and body, he wants to know that he's not gone to the dark side per se.

And this moment is so pivotal here. Now that they've finally talked and gotten everything out that they've both been ruminating on over the past however long (idk timelines lol), Wei Wuxian is in a place where he can say he'll accept Lan Wangji's help. Wei Wuxian doesn't agree to it begrudgingly, but I think it's a hopeless agreement. Unless you know about his lack of a Golden Core, his response seems odd--maybe you think he's tired, maybe you think he's just doing it to appease Lan Wangji, but is being dishonest. With the knowledge of the transfer, you can see that he is agreeing to appease Lan Wangji, but not in a lazy or dishonest way: he knows that he can never learn the sword again, but he allows Lan Wangji to at least help him with his temperament. I don't think it's him agreeing to get Lan Wangji off his back, I think instead he's letting Lan Wangji know how important he is to Wei Wuxian--he's special.

After Wei Wuxian agrees to letting Lan Wangji help, he walks away smiling. He doesn't let Lan Wangji see it either. I feel that he's indescribably happy that with so many changes in his life, he has his relationship with Lan Wangji back--he has his best friend, he has someone who he can trust. And remember, he's not concerned about his temperament being overwhelmed--Wei Wuxian has always considered himself a prodigy, so while this is challenging, he believes that what he learned from the Gusu Lan Clan is enough. Lan Wangji, on the other hand, is still very concerned, and he devotes all of his free time to figuring out ways to help Wei Wuxian, to steady his mind and temperament.

So, while I'm watching this filler, I'm imagining a terrible scenario they could have done. When you're adapting a book or a play or really anything, it's not uncommon to add scenes, right? CQL has plenty of added scenes for context and padding, plus shit they just made up. Okay, so this would fall into the latter category. Imagine if they had had Lan Wangji get turned into a puppet/Urukai, and then there's some big, dramatic way that Wei Wuxian has to save him and turn him back, and it only brings them closer together as brothers in arms/whatever bs they were trying to sell us without making it romantic. Sounds like a terrible idea, right? Aren't you glad the writers had enough integrity and respect for the novel that they didn't do that? I complain about things that were added or changed as well, but if they had given me an actual explicit acknowledgment of wangxian love, I would have been happy. Of course, censorship is a bitch, so that's a no go. The point of this is that it could have been a lot worse.

Oh, god. Soup drama. Thank you to that person who posted the soup drama in Lan Wangji's POV. You are amazing, and that post always makes me cackle.

Ah, but this is canon to the novel if I remember correctly. It's totally valid and is actually kind of sad for Yanli, but I still think it's hilarious the way Wei Wuxian just takes off like a shot without knowing what's going on. The thing is, Jiang Yanli is just embarrassed about the whole thing and wants to leave, but of course Wei Wuxian wants revenge. He still harbors no love for Jin Zixuan, and any chance he gets to put the peacock in his place, he'll take.

Yanli is tugging on him with both hands, and Wei Wuxian doesn't move. He is just standing there, glaring at Jin Zixuan. There are two people in the world who Wei Wuxian will defend forever: Jiang Yanli and Lan Wangji--and Jin Zixuan has just offended one of them. Wei Wuxian is beyond pissed. And now couple that with how he was trapped in a sunless graveyard for three months, has been doing nothing but fighting since he's been out, and is using his spiritual power in a dangerous and unstable method. His mood, my friends, is not great right now.

I love how Lan Wangji looks inside the tent, and then proceeds to immediately nope out of there. I blame that soup drama post for everything that I see now, because it really does look like he's just thinking, "Ugh, soup drama again." But in all seriousness, I think this is just Lan Wangji feeling awkward again. I think he came out of genuine concern for Jiang Yanli, because remember Wei Wuxian took off without even hearing what was going on, but when he sees that it's clearly a matter between her and Jin Zixuan, he leaves. This isn't his business, and it also involves romance, because of course he remembers how they were betrothed until the fight broke out in Cloud Recesses. Regardless of how Lan Wangji carries himself and how he's so respected as a cultivator, he's still a young man, who still feels awkward about the idea of love and doesn't really want to be around any of it--lovers' quarrels and whatnot.

The other thing is, they don't pan over to Lan Wangji for no reason. Perhaps he's still remembering the conversation he had with Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng back in Yiling: this is a Jiang Clan affair. And this time, he's choosing to bow out when he realizes it isn't his business. However, he doesn't want to go far, because he knows how dangerous Wei Wuxian really is, especially if he loses his cool.

Honestly, Jin Zixuan is such a dick here. Every time I think he's made progress, he takes a step backward. Jiang Yanli is the sweetest person, and is just giving him soup every day to provide him with some comfort. We're to understand that she is a good cook and her soup is The Best, so she wants to do something nice for him, perhaps bring him the comfort of home in the place that is farthest from home, and he practically throws it back in her face. It's a total misunderstanding, but my heart breaks for her. And after this moment, Jin Zixuan starts to try harder. I think he finally sees who she is, what kind of person she is, and understands how genuine and loving she has always been. He finally opens his eyes and gets to know her as a person, not as the girl he's engaged to, not as the girl he was engaged to, not as the girl his parents want him to marry--but as the girl who he's interested in.

Not a lot to talk about this episode. I swear, half of it is just fighting. But let's take a moment to appreciate Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji fighting together. I am a sucker for this sort of thing, so I love seeing Lan Wangji swoop in and knock a baddie's sword out of the way to protect Wei Wuxian. It feels good seeing that and seeing them on the same side, fighting together.

Wei Wuxian tried it their way. He tried to fight without using Chenqing, but the fight was impossible. As stated before, the puppets are unkillable, so there was no way to win just by fighting them, and obviously what Nie Mingjue was doing wasn't helping. The only way to survive at this point was to try and control the puppets into working against Wen Ruohan. There's a shot of Lan Wangji before this, where he looks concerned, but I think he even knows that they had no other choice.

This was a short one, sorry! But really, I'm not going to babble about nothing. So much fighting and not a lot of dialogue or other things really happened. We're just getting through major plot points right now to be honest.

By popular demand (like, one person asked for this idk) I present to you: a random assortment of fic recs. I’ve divvied it up by a) juniors, b) Yunmeng family feels and c) that sweet sweet wangxian content, but there’s definitely crossover because, fuck it, I am here for the act of making and remaking a family in whatever form that takes. There’s no rhyme or reason to what canon these pull from and I’ve organized it by length. Pairings are noted when I think they’re relevant.

anyway, here’s wuji by kakikaeru–– [18K, Rated T, Lan Jingyi/Lan Sizhui]

Lan Jingyi grows up.

everyone and their mother has rec’d this and I’ll be honest I didn’t really think I’d vibe with it (the title put me off, for starters) but I fell in love with lan jingyi and never looked back. it’s is such a lovely look at the lans and jingyi (and sizhui!!) truly get their due. beautiful characterization, big and wonderful feelings, and a take on jingyi (and lan xichen!) that I really truly love. plus some very good background wangxian, but the juniors are truly what shine here.

Lan Yuan is trying to make it through a high school science competition when his dead dad comes back into his life.

MY FAVORITE!!!!! wangxian plays a big part in this but it’s all through lan sizhui’s POV. modern au with a take on the rez that I really liked, and in general I just loved the adaptation. truly gets into the grit of being a teenager whose dad is back from the dead and in love with you other dad but neither of them are saying anything about it. most importantly, the juniors as a unit are the absolute best thing I have ever seen or read and if you read one fic off this list it should be this one. the rest of the series is likewise very very good though I am not caught up on it

yes it’s a wangxian family fic but actually it’s a jiang cheng fic and one of my very favorites. truly captures the Mortifying Ordeal Of Being Jiang Cheng, and does some really lovely stuff with the yunmeng bros and their reconciliation. this fic also 100% convinced that jc should be surrounded by a bevy of small children at all times. I just think it’d be really really good for him

post-canon wangxian. one of the tags on this is Risk Aware Consensual Patience which kind of encapsulates the whole thing. I’ve seen this one rec’d before (which is how I found it) and it is just. exquisite. emotional edging of the sweetest most achey sort with a beautiful look at wangxian. stuck with me for ages afterwards and easily one of my favorites

NIGHT HUNTING by detention_notes [30K, rated T]

Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, Nie Huaisang and Wen Ning make campy ghost hunter videos. Also, they are possibly being haunted for real?

this is just a fun time. like it’s very sweet and the atmosphere (especially through the first few chapters) is very very tasty. wwx/lwj/nhs/wn as a quartet is absolutely inspired and I’m very into it; one of the highlights of the fic. I do wish there had been Even More Haunting but even then it’s just. so good. I gotta put it on the list.

Lan Wangji rents his spare room to a disgracefully disowned Wei Wuxian and it escalates from there.

if there is one author I can recommend wholesale it is sysrae. I love their take on LWJ and wangxian and AU elements in general. all their mdzs/cql fic is good but this one does some very clever and painful things with the way canon gets adapted that punched me square in the face and I was grateful. plus it’s just 300% Lan Wangji’s Love Language Is Acts Of Service which is my favorite place to live

bonus rec: save a sword, ride a socialist [33K, rated E] –– wangxian fake date and then they real date. a-yuan is adorable.

Fire Lapping Up The Creek by notevenyou [66K, rated E]

Wei Wuxian doesn’t take Wen Ning with him to Carp Tower and the ambush goes a little more like planned. Lan Wangji deals with the consequences.

AU where wwx is mortally wounded on the way to jin ling’s party and lwj goes to the burial mounds to take care of him/the wens. excruciatingly heartbreaking and an incredible masterclass in tension and catharsis. it ends happily!! but god does it ache to get there. I adored it.

Lan Xichen in seclusion.

this is brutal. I love detention_notes’ fic (and art!!) and the tender melancholy that breathes just beneath everything they write but this one is particularly thorny. it’s a take on lan xichen in seclusion that offers very little in terms of catharsis but speaks novels to how and why xichen might be, well, xichen. it’s waiting for a realization that never comes and the weight never gets any lighter and it is agonizing and phenomenal. truly some of the best writing I’ve read

1/6 I really need to talk about WN - the poor guy just constantly gets the short end of the stick in canon. If you want to talk about trauma then HE is the perfect example - grew up being made to feel constantly inadequate thanks to his awful sect members, bullied constantly, then the war happens and his family - who had nothing to do with it - ends up in a labour camp, a whole bunch of them were probably killed before WWX got to them and then HE died what was probably a very painful

2/6 and humiliating death, then he was brought back as a fierce corpse and faced constant ridicule from everyone that wasn’t WWX and his family, blamed for the whole JZX thing, which...you don’t blame the weapon, you blame the person wielding it. WWX was the one who killed JZX even though there were definitely extenuating circumstances and the Jins were just as complicit because of their actions. But WN was not the cause of that. He deals with every situation with kindness and compassion, and he’s brave and trustworthy despite feeling so insecure himself. Anyway, my point is, if there’s one person who DESERVES to lose

So him deciding to tell JC the truth and be rude to him in a truly wonderful scene is completely fine in my book - obviously the part I’m not okay with is him completing giving away WWX’s secret like that, but since he was faced with the man who had led a siege to slaughter his entire family, and caused the death of his dear friend who was now lying unconscious in front of said man, I’m going to give him a pass (also if we go by CQL logic, WN must

Part 6 of the WN ask was about how if we follow CQL logic, then WN would probably be aware that JC once had feelings for his sister and made all sorts of promises to her...which would make his standing back and letting her die even worse. And the fact that JC is like the one person he was ever rude to, that’s just a testament to how much he must hate the guy.

Yeah, WN has such an awful time of it throughout the story. I just... He’s such a sweet boy when we first meet him! He’s shy and awkward and just... the sweetest boy, and he clearly thinks the world of WQ and WWX, and then he dies and WWX brings him back as a fierce corpse and... really, that should’ve been the end of it. He’d suffered enough! He never hurt anyone while in control of himself! At most he may have broken JC’s arm, but odds are that was a response to JC stabbing WWX in the guts, and that’s still assuming WWX wasn’t controlling him, as he does often seem to in combat pre-resurrection. He should have been able to live freely after WWX brought him back, along with his civilian family; it’s not his fault WWX lost control of him during the ambush! And then his sister dies and he spends over a decade as a glorified science experiment, and still he comes back the second WWX calls, even while not in control of his own mind. He’s so good and so loyal and he maintains his good nature throughout the story even with everything that happens. WN is a good boy and I do not trust anyone who doesn’t like him.

And yeah, he definitely has good reason to want to hurt JC by revealing the golden core transfer. That entire exchange is clearly designed to hurt; WN is forcing JC to realize that he will always be second best, and everything he accomplishes from now on will always be tainted in his eyes by coming from WWX’s core. WN really goes after him in a way we never see at any other point in the story, and it is... really satisfying to see. WN verbally ripping the man who led the slaughter of his family and (in CQL) promised to protect his sister only to let her die a new one? Glorious. Kick his ass, WN! My only issue with the whole scene is that WWX did ask WN to keep the whole transfer thing to himself, but since WWX himself openly acknowledges that it was necessary, I’m fairly okay with it.

hello all!!! i don’t usually Make Posts here bc.... well i just never started and now it’s a Habit. BUT!! it’s a brand new (terrible) world and i’m locked in my house looking for things to do and i NEED to talk about the untamed and #QuarantineLyfe has deprived me of coworkers to shout at and i’ve already yelled at my three (3) friends, so here we are

the untamed?? you’re thinking, is that that show with all the gifs you reblog of the two beautiful swordsmen pining at each other and you’re just screaming in the tags? yep!!! that’s the bitch!!! i started it 2 months ago and it still has a death grip on my soul. i have gone fully fucking feral about it. will i ever be capable of caring about anything else again? who knows. do i care? absolutely not, i have never been happier

the thing is that everyone who watches this show promptly (a) loses their full-ass mind about it and (b) feels compelled to get everyone else in the world to watch it, so that’s what’s happening here. PREPARE TO BE CONVINCED

okay so the untamed!!!!!!!!!! (that’s the appropriate amount of exclamation marks, i assure you). it’s a chinese drama on netflix (can confirm us and canada, unsure about anywhere else), it’s also all on youtube, and it’s *unhinges jaw and starts screaming*

you know that gif from the pride & prejudice movie where they touch hands for 1.2 seconds and we all clutch at our hearts? the untamed is THAT but for 50 episodes and also gay. you know the north & south bbc miniseries when richard armitage is watching the love of his life leave him and says “look back, look back at me” in That Voice and you’re somehow on the floor? it’s THAT but also gay. this show is just Yearning and Devotion dialed up to 10000000000 and it is UNBEARABLE and also THE best thing i’ve EVER seen. i love myself a period drama and the untamed is like: Period Drama, But What If The Most And Also Gay And Also There’s Magic, and that is Very Good For Me

i’m not doing a very good job telling you what this show is about and that is bc this show is batshit. if you start to describe the plot at all you sound unhinged, so i’m not gonna do that, i’m just gonna make a list of The Best Things About The Untamed, and then i’m gonna link to a couple people who’ve said things way more coherently than me. okay? okay.
