every day i want to eat glass
okay time for my regularly scheduled monthly rant about transphobia in the one piece fandom. specifically i wanna talk about how people treat yamato's dream to be oden because nothing inspires more anger in me.
dreams are so so so important in one piece. literally everybody knows that. the entire series is built around chasing your dreams, regardless of how impossible or ridiculous they are. yamato's desire to be oden will be played for jokes sometimes whenever he takes it too literally and addresses momonosuke as son, but the core of it is portrayed seriously by the narrative.
the samurai in his backstory fed him because they respected his drive to be oden. kaido abused him for years because of his dream but yamato never let that crack him. he helped save wano and was prepared to carry on oden's dream to open up the country on his own before learning that the nine red scabbards were back. he even learned from oden's past mistakes and choose not to abandon the country in its time of need and set out to sea, even though he's been imprisoned his entire life and has no concrete obligation to stay behind. his dream is treated just the same as anyone else's.
yamato wanting to oden has the same significance as luffy wanting to be pirate king. oden means freedom to him, and being a man is apart of that freedom.
so when people miss that and say hes "just a delusional girl" i feel like tearing shit apart with my teeth.
when has one piece EVER been about disrespecting someone's dream. can you imagine if the fandom reacted similarly with any other character? if people said sanji was delusional for wanting to find the all blue because it couldn't possibly exist? or that usopp was delusional for thinking he could be a great warrior of the sea? saying something like that would cause a fucking flame-war.
and yet its fine when that treatment is directed at yamato. which is, of course, because of transphobia. his gender being tied to his dream makes it something to be laughed at.
okay rant over i dont really have any sort of conclusion for this post.

You know what? I will never stop being angry about the way the wider one piece fandom treats Yamato. The way there's a fucking debate about whether he's a man or a woman and the way people will use she/her pronouns for him IN SPITE OF the fact canon NEVER does that.
(and I say "Yamato uses he/him pronouns" mainly because I haven't gotten to his full story in the anime yet, and as I understand it we don't know if he identifies as a trans man or a woman who uses he/him pronouns)
I know people who are in the exact same position as Yamato. One of my IRLs uses he/they pronouns and presents femme. I do not know if this is because he wants to physically transition but can't or if they have no desire to physically transition or if he considers himself a girl but doesn't use she/her pronouns. Someday I may find out, but until I do am I supposed to not use their pronouns? How could I call him my friend, someone I love very much, if I didn't?
Hell, I've been Yamato. I've grown my hair out because of depression and had my tits out cause binding would be too uncomfortable. I look like Yamato when I have my boobs out (except i'm fucking tiny but shhh).
So yeah, I feel personally attacked when someone uses she/her pronouns for him. Because I've been him and I know people like him. And one of my biggest dysphoria triggers is having my identity be presented to someone, and then rejected. So of course it would hurt to see someone who passes as well as I feel I do, to see a guy who confidently proclaims his identity to the world regardless of his appearance, and to also see half the fandom reject that identity. It hurts more than getting misgendered in real life does, because at least in real life people have the excuse of not knowing.
So yeah. I'm gonna be pissed off every time a Youtube commenter calls him "she" or when redditors try to "clarify" his gender by talking about "her" being "confused." Because at BEST they saw tits and previous she/her pronouns and didn't read the subtitles any further. At worst, they read the subtitles, and decided that since Yamato was BORN a woman then NATURALLY it's okay to use she/her pronouns because she's just "confused" and "not really trans" as if THAT MAKES IT ANY FUCKING BETTER. AS IF ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRANSPHOBIAS TRANS MEN FACE IS NOT THE IDEA THAT WE ARE "NOT REALLY TRANS." Of course i'm gonna be pissed off because I do not deal with my dysphoria every single fucking day only to see people reject Yamato because they don't talk to enough trans people in their everyday lives to realize that it doesn't fucking matter if someone's a trans man using he/him pronouns or a cis woman using he/him pronouns, you use the goddamn he/him pronouns.

It occured to me that i started watching one piece over 10 years ago and at that point it already ran for 16 years. Back then they were at fish men island when i was finally up to date. I stopped for a while and had an on and off relationship with it for some more time. A year ago i picked it up again and started from the beginning. And now i am in wano kuni and at the point were i'm not spoilered for anything big anymore (like aces death... thanks again for that lisa). It feels weird. It feels like i am spoilering myself when i watch it. I watched the falshback with gold roger and oden recently and heard of joy boy and saw the tiny bit of laugh tale and it felt so much like something i shouldn't know. (And like something luffy would hate to see, i almost had a guilty consiousness, and maybe i would have liked to learn what it is in luffys pace. To expierience it as he does.). Because when i first watched, there was no such thing as laugh tale, no one knew anything about roger except he was some guy on a scaffold who started the great pirate age. Rayleigh wasn't a thing and it wasn't clear that road porneglyphs existed. We didn't know who ruffys dad was or that sabo was alive (i cried happy tears back then). Fuck, one didn't even know what the yonkos looked like or (in the beginning) what they were called. Don't even get me started on sanji! They made so many big steps forward in the last few arcs. And while i am sure it will be years till we know, what the one piece is, it feels unfathomably weird to get answers for all the questions asked to actually get puzzle pieces now. Something in me (16 year old me) still believes the ending of one piece is in the very distant future. So distant that it can't really be grasped (at least not by a 16 year old) and suddenly it feels much nearer than before and very unreal at the same time. One Piece always was a constant. Something i knew would last and now i'm faced with the possibility it will end. And that the big big mystery will be solved. That we will someday know what the one piece is. That it's slowly useful to make assumptions, what the one piece is (better assumptions than "its their friendship"). Its not as vague anymore it gets a form, and that feels very weird. I cant imagine how someone would feel who watched ever scince 1997. I am very curious how it will all fall into place but at the very same time i am sad, that it will end, that i will someday not expierience more of the joy and curiousoty it brings me, no more adventures, no more riddles, assumptions, hypothesis. Yeah i can watch it again but it will not be with the same novelty it has had the last 26 years.

I've seen a lot of people say that what's going on in Palestine is comparable to Alabasta when there are better allegories in One Piece, such as Skypia and Flevance .

I absolutely need everyone who has only seen opla to know that Usopp being written as afraid of bugs is the most heinous and unforgivable of character assassinations, that boy would keep tarantulas and scorpions as pets; SANJI is the bugphobe!!!

i'm aware that due to luffy's more cheerful personality and looks, a lot of people might find it weird to picture him in sexual situations. especially since most of us see him as aroace (as if aroace people couldn't have sex or be in love but, y'know, that's for another time) and it's completely understandable to not feel comfortable around sexual stuff if you don't like it with this specific character. however, being uncomfortable around that type of content and infantilizing luffy's character to the point that you consider it problematic or wrong to put him in romantic/sexual situations is too much and you should let people enjoy characters however the fuck they want. if you don't like something just scroll and ignore it, but don't try to make everyone follow your own moral compass and likes because we're all different and luffy is just a fictional character.
people often forget he's the captain of a pirate crew. he's mature and has critical thinking and if seeing a cheerful/cute character instantly makes you assume he deserves to be "protected" from sex/romance, you are: infantilizing his personality (that may or may not be neurodivergent coded, but that's another story), villainizing sex and romance instead of just seeing those as something you don't personally enjoy but should let other people consume, and using being aroace as a shield from the real world and a stereotype instead of actually being inclusive and truly seeing him as aroaspec. friendly reminder that aroaspec people can have sex and be in romantic relationships because it's a spectrum. that's the whole thing about it. it's understandable to not be comfortable around sexual situations with a character you don't perceive as sexually active, but that doesn't mean it's wrong to write him that way. let people do whatever they want with their idea of luffy and have fun!

USOPP ART PSA
I've seen a lot of Usopp art lately, but some artists drew him in a way I thought everyone knew was racist, so I want to explain for those who don't know. I'm not calling out anyone in particular, but I won't interact with art that portrays him this way on principle, no matter how much love goes into it.
Usopp’s lip design in the one piece anime and manga is racist. This has been said many times before. It is based on racist caricatures used to insult black people, and minstrel show makeup used to imitate them.
I don't know if Oda has spoken on this before, but I can't find anything on it if he did. I don't know his intentions with drawing Usopp like this, because he draws lips normally on characters like Kuzan, and draws loop lips on non black characters. But whatever the logic, it is best if you don't draw Usopp as a racist caricature.
Warning: Historic loop lip examples below cut
Used as examples to educate
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are examples of the type of cartoons the loop lip was used in. The design is meant to make fun of and exaggerate traditionally african facial features. It is insulting to draw black characters like this, especially when they're one of the few characters of color in the reoccurring cast.

not to be a hater, like genuinely BUT, if Thriller Bark is truly a zosan moment wouldn't it be like a one-sided thing?
like i can see where zosan enjoyers are coming from when they make what didn't happen about 'em two, but if u were to actually consider it, it's almost heartbreaking with how unrequited it ends up being? i mean, Zoro is doing it for Luffy, there's no questioning that, both of his dreams are so intertwined by then that Zoro can't imagine being the world's greatest swordsman if it's not for the future Pirate King, if Zoro accepts taking Luffy's suffering is because he's ready to die for him, that's how committed he is to his captain, he truly believes Luffy will make his dream come true, and then you have Sanji (and, if he tries to sacrifice himself instead of Zoro, we know it's because of his suicidal tendencies and putting people before him bc he can't see what his worth is, but let's leave that aside) telling Zoro that no, it's him who'll accept Luffy's pain bc they can always find another cook, most people see this as Sanji doing it for Zoro, but at the end, even if that was all there is to it, Zoro doesn't let him and the whole reason of why he's doing it in the first place never changes, it's for Luffy, what he didn't do was for his captain, so he could live to complete his dream, he says it himself. and again, not to be a hater but if u were to read zosan into Thriller Bark, i think it's unrequited love on Sanji's part bc Zoro feels too strongly about Luffy (wether be platonic or romantic), that he'd never see Sanji in that light

So glad for your latest post about zosan because I started 1pc FULLY expecting to be bowled over by their interactions for how prevalent the ship is in the fandom and I’ve just….. been so confused about it… and wondering if I’m missing something…. like it’s not enemies to lovers, they’re not even rivals, they’re just like. Irritable coworkers who sometimes get in each other’s way…. Anyway ur so right about sansopp 🙏🙏
I didn't know ANYTHING about one piece when I watched opla (I didn't even know they were pirates) so I def didn't know about zsn. I walked away from the live action thinking 'damn the captain and first mate are NOT normal about each other' and 'luffy is sanji's little meow meow <3". I didn't even consider zoro and sanji as a dynamic outside of 'they're both trying to be the prettiest belle at the ball so that luffy will look at them'..... but I didn't really actively ship either. not even zolu (surprising I know)
upon learning about zsn I thought ok. this is clearly because I haven't watched the anime / read the manga. obviously there's something i'm missing. I read 400 chapters of the manga and am currently 450 episodes into the anime. there is obviously still something i'm missing because like you said, i'm seeing irritable coworkers. i'm not denying that they respect each other & care for each other as nakama but like...................like..................LIKE??
I'm never been a hate shipper, nor am I predisposed to ship things bc 'hot'. nothing against people who do obviously but my track record of otps is the exact opposite of the zsn dynamic. and going into the series not even knowing they were a popular ship. I have tried to see it (and obvi in the hate ship hot sex way I can see it) but other than that I have accepted that I will never get it. luffy x zoro & sanji x usopp on the other hand.....

To all my fellow Zolu enjoyers, let me make my stance on the matter clear!
I love all the Zolu fanart and fanfiction and discussions! They are beautiful and charming and poetic and I will reblog/bookmark them til the end of time…
I however personally headcanon Luffy as Aro/Ace so my primary ship for Zoro is Sanji. I will more often post those dipshits than Zoro x Luffy or Sanji x Luffy because I think of Luffy as Aro/Ace.
As an Aro/Ace person myself I would like to request that I am not questioned on behalf of this opinion. Arguing with me that I don’t understand the bond between Luffy and Zoro because if I did I would ship them is insulting. I read/watched the same manga/anime as you. Implying that they have to be romantically involved implies that friendship has a limit and devolution is only something that can be achieved through romance.
Within canon, I ship no one. Outside of canon (for funzies, let’s say) I ship really anyone who cute fanart but my preference is with Zoro and Sanji.
I do love Zolu and I would love to discuss every one of their interactions but can people please stop implying that everyone who ships Zosan is a depraved sex-freak who is media illiterate? I’m none of those things. I just like projecting onto my favorite anime character and I like when opposites attract.

as a multishipper it’s so weird to me seeing takes like “zolu (or sanuso) have so much in canon but zosan not really so ofc zsn shippers just see them as hot or smth but there’s nothing more” and others like it. first of all… thats a weird hill to die on. since when does canon basis makes one ship superior to the other. second of all: some people just don’t enjoy having everything already established and served on a silver plate. i love zolu with all my heart, they are wonderful and perfect in a lot of ways and interpretations. but what also clicks for me in a special way (and why i can’t let zosan go since i was 16, even tho they’re very much not a priority anymore) is thinking what would it take characters that incompatible fall in love. how would it happen. how would they behave and deal with it and be stupid but also vulnerable in a lot of ways. how would this develop and change them and their worldview. its fascinating! its cool when things are pretty much established in canon and two characters are written like each other’s half but. it’s so much fun to make it difficult and make it a journey. the conclusion is always so satisfying.
so no, zosan is not just “they hate fuck and its cool”
its being incompatible and messy and weird and angry but also trusting each other and respecting each other in so many ways. it’s “you know the worst of me but you still here and i trust you with my life” and also rethinking their view on love and
it’s not for everyone, sure, but it’s not so hard to accept other people’s taste and way of thinking instead of demeaning it or making it a weirdest competition. it’s not. (especially when it’s about literally two of the most popular ships on fandom lmao)
