Disclaimer: none of these answers are official, and may not work for your particular use case. If there is a specific feature that an unofficial app had that you don't know how to replicate on the AO3, let me know in the notes and we might can crowdsource a solution.

A lot of people used the Archive Reader app to access stories on Archive of Our Own, and have been upset that the app is now charging to read longer than an hour a day. AO3 (and its parent organization, the OTW) has made it extremely clear in recent days that this app is unofficial and that there *is* no official app. They encourage people to use the website.

However, there are MANY reasons you might want an app, and in a bunch of those cases, there are ways to do those things without having to provide your login information to a random person running an app. Here is a round-up of solutions to the most common reasons I've seen people give for wanting an app instead of the plain AO3 website.

These solutions are based on the following assumptions:

You know what Archive of Our Own is

You often or primarily access it through a mobile device running iOS or Android

You understand what a browser is

You understand what a browser bookmark is

You understand what a site skin is

I need to be able to read stories when I don't have internet.

I need to be able to change the text size of the website itself.

I need to be able to change the text size in downloaded stories.

My personal recommendation: Don't download in PDF format. All the other formats you can download in can scale the text size up and down, assuming you open the work in the correct app. For me, I download works in EPUB format and read them on the built-in Books app on my iPhone. I hear good things about Moon Reader on Android as well.

I need to be able to replace Y/N in fics with an actual name.

I need to be able to save specific tags and not have to search them up every time.

I need to be able to save specific filters and be able to apply them to any tag.

This is really mostly a browser error--Firefox on iOS does this to me A LOT. Your best bet is to download the work and read it in an ereader app. A lot of people also will make an ao3 bookmark and write in the notes section which part they were at, but that assumes you aren't falling asleep while reading. I need it to keep track of which stories I've already read/opened/kudos'd.

If you have an account (which you should) then the "My History" page keeps track of every fic you've ever clicked on. No, it isn't searchable or sortable, but it does exist. I need an app because the website's search is terrible.

(I genuinely don't understand this one but I have seen it multiple times so on the list it goes!!) The search bar at the top of the screen is a keyword search. If you'd rather search within a specific field (like title or tag) then you'll want to click on the word "search" at the top of the screen and select Work Search or Tag Search. To search users, use People Search. To search Bookmarks, use Bookmark Search. (If this is you, please tell me what the heck you mean by "search is bad" and how an app helped with this.)

I need to be able to sort stories by date posted/number of bookmarks/alphabetical/etc.

You can do this using the filters sidebar. Pick a tag you want to filter on (like a fandom, character, or relationship) and then click on the "Filters" button. The sidebar will pop out and you can sort and filter on a boggling array of specifics. I need to be able to mark stories to read later.

AO3 has this feature built in! If you have an account (which you should) there is a "Mark for Later" option on every work.

Edit: Thispersonishuman reminded me that History and Mark For Later can be disabled, so if you're not seeing the Mark for Later option, check your settings.

I need to be able to listen to stories using text-to-speech.

Microsoft Edge web browser has a built in text to speech function. Supposedly it works on both iOS and Android, but I have not personally tested that. iOS also has a native accessibility feature in settings for text to speech that will work on the Books app, so I assume Android has a similar functionality. I need to have in-app notifications for updates/I can't ever find story updates in among the rest of my emails/checking my email stresses me out.

Set up a separate email address using a free service like gmail, and use that email address JUST for AO3. Then the only emails in that inbox will be your story updates. I use Apple's Mail application for all my inboxes, but it's very easy to use the Gmail app instead, and you could log in to JUST the ao3 email and set it to notify for every email.

(Also as a general PSA: don't use your work, school, or military email as your AO3 email. Just don't.)

I want statistics like how many hours I spent reading, how many words I read, what my most read tags were, stuff like that.

So we've finally hit something that isn't easy and that requires a hell of a lot of manual work. Short version: AO3 does not track this data because they don't want to. (Mostly due to privacy concerns.) The lack of this tracking is a feature, not a bug. You can crunch these numbers yourself, but it will take a hell of a lot more effort, and it's something I personally found is not worth the effort the couple of times I have tried to crunch those numbers. If you are willing to download your history to an actual computer (not a tablet or chromebook) using Calibre, you can get a rough idea of your most popular tags via their tag browser, but it won't play nice with typos synned to a Common Tag (Canonical Tag/filterable tag) like ao3 does. (If anyone has used an app that gave you stats on this, please let me know in reblogs/replies/via ask how that worked because I am very curious.)

i've done minimal testing but it looks like ALL TAGS may be broken. confirmed affected tags are: qsmp, qsmp2, window, hermitblr, 3rd life, and mishapen words.

WRITERS/ARTISTS TAKE NOTE: the last tag there is my writing tag, and it is NOT BEING UPDATED. This is fine, and you can keep posting as normal. Make your post in the qsmp3 tag, and then schedule a reblog with whatever organizational system you use for your blog. Schedule it for a day or two from now- given past trends, the tags should be working again by then. Unlike main tags, searching through a blog's tags will show reblogs as well, so you'll be all good.

the last time this happened the tag was out for 7+ hours. Maybe we'll be lucky and get it back faster, but it's tumblr, so don't hold your horses.

use qsmp3 as a temp main tag for your qsmp fandom posts. schedule a reblog in a day or two for anything you want organized on your blog. and again: PLEASE REBLOG THIS POST. even if you just have 1-2 followers. they're not going to know otherwise

DIDL + Website Status Update

You may have noticed that I have not updated my website in quite some time. I've also noticed this, and I enjoy working on my webpage, so this has made me quite sad.

I've made a decent amount of progress since I first announced my webpage design overhaul, and I have to say: I like how it's going!

Obviously unfinished, but I'm excited about it.

About half of the illustrations for 18 are done so far, I have another side comic finished, and the writing for intermission 2 is coming along well.

If possible, the updated website should be out in February 2024, with more regular updates to DIDL afterwards.

More under the Read More below! I tend to ramble + have a bunch of misc bonus stuff I haven't posted (I think).

Feedback on any issues with the current website layout is wonderfully appreciated. You can contact me here, or use my email which can be found on the website.

(I haven't been able to start on the new DREAMLAND main page yet, but I'm very excited to share everything I've been working on when I can!) I really want to work on more Extra Content. While I have some short comics scripted out, I just have so much information in my head and no idea what is best to present first...! If you can think of something I could expand on, I'd be happy to hear it. What would be fun to see?

Also, an update on my very long body type and height reference lineup. I'm unsure if I'll add anyone else, as this is just for characters who I consider major enough to keep consistent heights.

I also have this Phoebe turnaround because I planned to 3D model her before I got very sick in November, and I've yet to return to modeling... I'll get back to it eventually.

Okay so here’s my thoughts on the staffcon thing.

I still think collapsing reblogs so posts look more like other social media isn’t gonna work as a feature but they will probably roll them back a little and at least add a toggle off for it if they try it and enough people submit feedback. Edit: this is actually less of an issue, most of the discussion is based on a misrepresentation of what’s happening. They’re just making it easier to scroll past long posts. EDIT AGAIN: actually some people already have the initial roll out of the feature and it. Is bad.

I think submitting feedback is a takeaway. There was a pretty clear effort to just remind the user base that there are real humans on the other side of a paycheck having to read and respond to the inputs of every feedback method on the site, which is fair. It’s easy to be an asshole online in any semi anonymous platform and that is something that tumblr culture takes a certain bloodthirsty pleasure in.

And yes, of course, user complaints about issues such as accessibility and the many ongoing glitches and bots and the search function, etc. are valid and do need to be addressed. But at the very least it would be cool if we as users maybe try to cultivate a slightly less pitchforky social norm when submitting feedback about changes to the site. The ceo is not reading every @ to his blog. One of his employees is. The people reading all of the feedback are just people doing their jobs. All jobs suck under capitalism, maybe we could try not to make their jobs actively worse.

Would you be rude to an overworked server in a restaurant? No? Cool also try to not be a dick to the person getting paid to answer customer or user complaints.

Related to that, funding. Many current and former members of staff have been pretty frank about funding in the past. The company is trying to at the very least breakeven, which not a single company who has owned tumblr has managed because the hosting fees for this site are insane due to all of the stuff on it.

If they don’t get it to breakeven they’ll hopefully best case just open source the website which is a method they’ve done in the past. And it would probably work, and then the website would to my understanding be being maintained by users. Now this is where my understanding gets fuzzy so anyone with more knowledge of how this would shake out feel free to chime in. But my understanding is that the source code for the site would be opened up and maintained by the community likely through mostly volunteer work. I would guess largely uncompensated.

So personally I think maybe the vitriolic response to every change they make going forward to try and monetize the site and pay even some of the cost of operation is perhaps a bit overblown, because they’re still trying to find a way to keep paying those people to work on tumblr, and I think people continuing to be paid for the work they do is better than volunteers doing unpaid labor.

I do also think there’s a secret third option for automattic and every other company finding themselves with a worse outlook now the Silicon Valley bubble has started to really burst, and that is for all existing staff members to unionize and then turn the whole thing into a worker coop. Much more stable organizational structures. Worker coops are also one of my favorite short term solutions to many other systemic problems we are currently experiencing.

I do hope this site continues to exist for many years, especially as it is one of the only places on the internet where the culture makes it safer to talk about some of the more permanent and long term solutions to various systemic issues that function within societies. Also funny text posts.

I have been so confused to see people call Lulu "minor-coded".

Deadass thought her whole schtick was that being in the goo stunted her development, which explains why she is so small and has to basically re-learn speaking.

I really wish people would stop jumping to "This character is small and cute so there they are minor-coded". It feels so weird to see, especially when there is a logical explanation for Lulu in that she is developmentally stunted in some way: i.e. her organs are deadass fucked up.

If I am correct, the other Lulu that came out of one of the other Deathdrives was a lot bigger than Lulu — presumably because she had more time to develop.

VERY particular about his sleep. he has to lay down a certain way, he has to have TWO pillows under his head, ONE betwixt his spindly legs because his bony knees feel uncomfy when they touch, he has to be facing AWAY from a window but TOWARDS the door, and if he has an eyemask on him don’t even joke about taking that shit off

is lupin the third ever tired? i don’t fucking know. he’s cranky if you wake him up too early, he’s hardly a morning person, but at the same time if you meet up with him at noon, he’ll act the same regardless of if he got 10 hours last night or 3. 

all that said do NOT interrupt his sleep, it’ll take him five weeks to get comfy again and an additional 10 to actually fall back asleep. and he’ll remember who woke him up.

mumbles in his sleep occasionally (sometimes he pretends to sleeptalk cuz he thinks its funny) but the REAL problem with him is his tossing and turning. he’ll wake up on the bed completely upside down sometimes. he kicks, he pushes out his arms, he rolls over, he’s got one leg on the wall one arm off the bed and he’s sleeping like a baby

gross but he also sweats in his sleep. it’s why he either just sleeps in his underwear or has those nice satin types yknow

semi-light sleeper. depends on how little sleep he got the night before. kind of operates on rule of funny like most things with him really! jigen could be popping popcorn two inches from his head and he’d be drooling on his pillow but if some bad guy of the week takes one wrong step in his room at night he’s up in a second.

jigen is chill about sleep. if that makes even remotely any sense. he puts on his little cap and nightgown jammies, he gets under the covers, he wakes up at his desired time. however, the point where he actually GOES to sleep tends to be about an hour or two after everyone else has. not to sober up the party too much, but he’s a little iffy on the idea of everybody being completely asleep at once for reasons you could imagine

he’s equally grumpy no matter the amount of sleep he’s getting, but he is a little quicker to get silly with it if he’s tired. maybe he’s just losing clarity there. 

does it count as insomnia if it’s a selfmade choice to not go to bed before midnight? yes because if he TRIES to go to bed early he just stares at the ceiling for hours. which is actually better for your body than not trying to sleep at all, but still

jigen sleeps like the dead dude. or at least, it’s the impression he gives off. when jigen’s settled, he does not move. at all. his mouth doesn’t twitch. sometimes you’ll hear a little sigh or grumble, but they’re few and far between. 

in contrast to that though, if he hears even the slightest noise, if the temperature in the room changes by 1 degree, he wakes up. not fully, not immediately, but he’ll wake up enough to glance around, see nothing’s wrong, and get back to sleep. god help you if something IS wrong though cuz you know that bitch keeps his gun under his pillow

fujiko’s sleeping habits are almost elusive. nobody knows. except me right now because it’d be boring if i didn’t at least make up some shit to tell you right

like lupin, she’s very particular about her routine. VERY particular. and like jigen she has a little trouble actually settling in and being mentally comfortable enough to sleep. needless to say sleepovers are a fucking nightmare. 

fujiko sleeps like a fucking mattress firm model. the peaceful, on her side, little hands under her cheek pose and everything. she doesn’t toss or turn, she just makes occasional content sighs, digs her shoulder under her pillow a little more to get comfy, it’s like sickeningly cute, and unlike a lot of fujiko’s traits, this is not practiced, it’s just honestly how she sleeps

in a strange way aside from her intense routine getting to bed she’s a pretty normal sleeper in comparison. she wakes up in the middle of the night quite a bit, but even if it’s a nightmare induced wake up she just slips out of bed. gets a lil water. chills the fuck out and goes back to sleep. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW ENVIABLE IT IS TO THE OTHERS

but another not fun note is that fujiko dreams a lot, and as a result she experiences quite a few stress-nightmares. like i said, she’s handled it by herself, even if she shouldn’t, and she doesn’t stress over it (ironically) but. yeha.

goemon:

you know goemon canonically falls asleep sitting crisscross applesauce sometimes. on his side. like in canon. i think he did it at least twice. it’s not even a matter of being so tired he could fall asleep in any position he just loves the challenge of it because he’s so fucking weird

goemon, and this is true in a lot of cases, is the least high maintenance out of the group. he can fall asleep anywhere if it’s convenient, safe, and comfy enough. horrible flat hotel bed? no prob. mat that’s barely keeping him 1 mm off the ground? sure. hammock desperatey holding on for dear life? he’ll just take the grass why the hell not.

also a very light sleeper, and sometimes struggles getting back to sleep, because he starts overthinking about why/what woke him up. and like fujiko, (and probably jigen now that i’m thinking about it. maybe all of them POINT BEING) he gets quite a few stress nightmares. but hey. no biggie. just the natural consequence of. everything that he’s experienced and exposed himself to!

sometimes if he falls asleep in a weird position VERY RARELY he makes this like. quiet cartoonish bubububuh snore. they have videos of it they think its hilarious. goemon’s completely unaware that he does it. also talks in his sleep on very rare occasions, but it’s mumbly and mostly inaudible anyway

do i need to put another health warning here. don’t do this. his sleep schedule is all kinds of fucked up. and not just in the “i stayed up all night researching this museum that lupin LOOKED at once (so i haven’t slept in. 30 hours oops)” sense but also like it’s been 15 hours and the other officers go “wait where did he-- didn’t he say he was just gonna take a nap.” and he’s out like a light dude

when he DOES sleep he’s immovable. not to say he doesn’t shift around any, he does, but like. HEAVY heavy sleeper he’s not moving from that spot man. good luck trying to wake him up unless you set off the trigger phrase because he might as well be hibernating.

(this one’s canonical too actually) he likes to fall asleep holding a pillow :) to the point that if there’s only one pillow available he just. moves it to his arms. maybe invest in a travel one my man. he does it sleeping on his side AND sleeping on his back so i can’t imagine it’s very good for his neck

also very canonical is the fact he snores. like violently. its awful get earplugs. good ones. like, get the kind they make for swimmers to keep water out of their ears. it won’t stop the entire room from vibrating but you can just pretend you’re experiencing a minor earthquake and it’ll be fine. on the plus side it means its incredibly easy for the gang to tell when he’s out, because they can hear it from the next building over
