Hello My Old Heart
Hello everyone!! I give you, as promised, Hello My Old Heart, the winner of the poll. This is based off that one ask Calcium_Cat got about what if OSD!Dream and OSDiff!Dream met. I was immediatly taken in my angst of it all and knew I had to write about it.
Now, it might not be entirely in character, as I did nothing more than skim the original sources to double check things, but I think it turned out well regardless. I did take some inspiration for Coraline and Alice Through the Looking Glass, which you will see. But that’s just more so as an explain for why these two are meeting in the first place.
I don’t really have much to say, really! So I guess this is it! Happy reading!!
Fandom: Undertale/UTMV
Characters: (One Small Dream) Dream (Who belongs to @calcium-cat), (One Small Difference) Dream, and background (One Small Difference) Nightmare and background (One Small Difference) Cross (Who belong to @warriorstale001)
Warnings: Very vague implied/referenced torture, and I think that’s it. Let me know!
Summary: “Based off of this post from Tumblr. Or: What happens when OSD!Dream and OSDiff!Dream meet? Let's find out. (UTMV, One Small Dream belongs to Calcium_Cat and One Small Difference belongs to Warriorstale001, Dream sans Centric)”

~oOo~
Dream was playing hide and seek with Crossy and Kiki when he found the mirror.
He admits to breaking the rule of hiding in the dungeons. But he really wanted to up the playing field. Crossy and Kiki always seemed to find the most wild places to hide and he wanted to be the one with the best hiding place for once. They already knew every spot on the main floor, though, and upstairs were their bedrooms and it was boring to hide in bedrooms. There were only so many places there.
So, while there was a rule they followed about not hiding in the dungeons, it wasn’t really enforced too much. And they wouldn’t think to check there until they’ve run out of places to check. It’ll be fun. He’s sure of it. They’ll enjoy the challenge.
And it’s not like they wouldn’t find him. They always found him. It’ll just take longer than it has before, that’s all. It’ll be fine.
Of course, this was all before he found the mirror.
In the dungeons, there was a row of cells. They never got used much. Past them, there were a few rooms they used as storage. It was out of the way. Nobody really went down there unless they really needed something. It was perfect. Dream slips inside and has to pause for a minute as he disrupted the dust and choked on it. Once his breathing was back to normal, he looks around.
Nothing too exciting. Boxes and shelves and cobwebs in the corner. And dust.
And the mirror in front of him.
This mirror didn’t belong here. He knows that much. It was easy to tell. It was a nice mirror, with engraved details along the top and sides. It looks new. But he knows none of the others had bought a mirror, and if they had, they wouldn’t immediately put it down here to get ruined. No, this mirror was not brought here by anyone in the castle. But if it wasn’t, how did it get here? Who brought it? Surely it didn’t just…appear all on its own. That was impossible.
Dream steps closer, peering at his reflection. It seems like a normal mirror. Nothing special to it, just odd that it was here instead of upstairs. Maybe he should go and get Crossy and Kiki and they could check it out with him. Maybe they knew where it came from. If not, maybe Nighty would. If not…then it was a mystery. And everyone loves a mystery now and then, right? It would be cool to try and solve this one.
He reaches out to touch it.
Something scurries over his foot, spooking him, making him yelp, and he falls forward, his other hand flying forward, hoping to catch himself on the mirror.
Only, his hand goes through the mirror and he tumbles onto the floor.
Dream lay there for a moment. “Ow…”
He feels more winded from the fact that he just fell through a mirror than he did from falling on the floor. You’re not supposed to go through mirrors. That’s not what mirrors are for. They’re not doors. Why was it, then, that he just did the impossible? Was he magic? Well, yes, he was, technically, but was he fairy-tale magic? Did his dream finally come true?
Picking himself up, he wipes off his pants. He blinks at the room. Everything seems off. Wasn’t that shelf on the opposite wall when he walked in? And that box, wasn’t it over there? And that one over here? “That’s odd.” He stands there. Why is everything backward? “Um…” Turning, he stares at the spot where the mirror should be. It’s empty. “Well, that can’t be good.”
Where did the mirror go? Mirrors don’t just walk away. Where did it go?
Thoroughly unsettled and a bit frightened, he backs up. “I should head back. Nighty’s probably worried.”
In the hallway, everything’s backward too. Frowning, he tries to go in the direction he thinks the stairs will be. If everything’s backward, they’ll be on the opposite side. But he pauses a few steps in. He looks back distracted.
There’s negativity in the air. And it’s not coming from Nighty or any of the others.
It’s someone else.
But the only rooms down here are storage rooms and cells. Nobody else is here. Unless…someone was? But why would Nighty capture someone?
The negativity is steady. It tugs at him, almost pulling him toward where it's coming from. Should he let it? But Crossy and Kiki and Nighty…he should get back to them. He should tell them what just happened. They’ll know better. They usually do. And they’ll get more worried the longer he doesn’t return.
But this negativity…it feels familiar, somehow, for someone he doesn’t know. He’s the guardian of positivity. Shouldn’t he help this person? Or try to? He can always go back and get the others. Always. It won’t take too long to go and check.
Glancing back, he slowly turns, heading down the hall. “Just a quick check, Dream,” he says to himself, saying it over and over again in his head to make sure it sticks.
Following the negativity, he goes further into the dungeons, passing empty cells. It’s dark and cold down here. It makes him shiver just a bit. He pulls his cape around him. Getting closer, he slows down, coming to a stop in front of what he expects to be another empty cell.
It’s not.
The person inside flinches as he gasps. They look up, and their eyes widen. Their mouth opens a bit. Their negativity doesn’t leave, but it does fade, replaced with confusion and surprise.
But it’s none of this that made him gasp. It’s not what he expected, yes, and it is surprising, but he’s more so concerned with the person and what they’re wearing than anything. Their clothes are ripped and dirty, yellow vest stained with blood. They seem to be chained up, too, arms spread across the wall. They shift and the chains clank against the wall, but they don’t seem to notice, their focus all on him.
And Dream’s focus is on the crown they wear.
The golden crown that was, if he was seeing things correctly, given to them as a gift from their brother, way back before the villagers really settled down.
The golden crown that looks exactly like his.
Eyes wide, Dream looks at Future Him.
How was he here? This shouldn’t be possible. One of them should be gone if the other is here. What’s going on? And were those bandages? Was Future Him injured? Why? How? Nighty would never allow him to be injured. And this looks like a bad injury. Maybe Nighty couldn’t stop in time, or wasn’t around? But then surely Future Him wouldn’t be in a cell if Nighty knew he was injured and needed to heal.
Then…Nighty must be gone. Or they must be captured. Or something like that. Nighty was probably on his way here to rescue them. Yeah. Then it was a good thing Dream was here. He can help Future Him escape before Nighty finds them, making it easier to get out of there. Then they can get home and deal with this situation without any trouble.
“Woah.” Dream breathes, stepping closer. “You look awful.” He grabs one of the bars. “Are you okay? Do you need help? Don’t worry, I can help. We’re in the dungeons, right? The keys should be around here somewhere. I’ll find them. Stay here.”
Without giving Future Him time to say anything back, he moves down the hall in search of the keys. Humming to himself as quietly as he can to make his own soundtrack for this important mission, he peeks around the corner and finds another hallway of cells. But at the end of that one, when he peeks around this corner, he finds Crossy asleep in a chair. His arms are across his chest, head hanging. He seems to be sound asleep. But still, Dream tip toes as he comes closer.
For a moment, he’s confused. How is Crossy here when they were just playing hide and seek together? He couldn’t have gotten here that fast. It’s just impossible. And he’s asleep, too. That’s even more impossible. He would’ve had to be gone for hours for this to happen. Was he? No, no. He can’t have been. Something else was going on here.
Something really, really weird and wrong.
Looking around, he doesn’t see any keys. But remembering stories where the characters found keys on the guards and used them to escape, he eyes Crossy again. He feels guilty for having to do it, but it’s better he tries than gives up. And if the keys aren’t there, he’ll just have to keep searching.
He rummages through Crossy’s pockets and much to his surprise and delight, finds a ring of keys. He takes them out as silently as he can, barely keeping from saying anything in celebration. Somehow, he succeeds.
Smiling to himself, he rushes back. He’s a little out of breath by the time he arrives.
“I’m back!” Dream says, making Future Him look up in surprise. That’s a little hurtful. Of course he would come back! Why would Future Him think otherwise? “Let’s see…not that one…no, no—here!” The cell clicks and he slips inside, barely holding in a cheer—that would definitely wake Crossy up. He stands by Future Him, eyeing the chains. “Um, I don’t know if the key to the chains will be on this ring. There were two there. We’ll just have to try them all and see.”
Luckily, it was on there, and the chains around Future Him’s wrists click open. Dream quickly does the same with the ankles. Stepping back, he waits. Future Him doesn’t move. Concerned, he shifts in place, unsure what to do. Should he…help? But what would he be helping with? Before he needs to decide, though, Future Him’s legs buckle and he crashes to his knees, catching himself with his arm before he can fall on his face.
Yelping, Dream crouches beside him, hands hovering. What should he do? What should he do? Future Him blinks, slowly, and stares at him. His eyes are wide. Disbelieving. Slowly, he reaches up a hand—which is shaking, by the way, they should really find out how to stop that, it can’t be healthy—and rests it on Dream’s cheek.
Blinking, he lets Future Him do what he wants. Maybe it’ll make him feel better.
The other hand joins, resting on his other cheek, and Future Him’s expression breaks into one he can’t pin down. Swallowing, he speaks, voice raspy, as if he’s used it too long, or maybe not enough. “You’re…real?”
Dream blinks again, concern increasing. “Yeah.” Tilting his head, he frowns. “Did you think I wasn’t?”
Future Him doesn’t respond, still staring. Though his hands do drop, clasping together in his lap.
“Um.” Dream sits, crossing his legs like how he’s been taught. In any other situation, he might be getting a story read to him by one of Nighty’s boys. “So…what happened?”
Future Him looks confused. “What do you mean?”
Isn’t it obvious? Dream gestures around the cell. “Why were you chained up? How did you get here? How are you here in the first place? Because I’m here and you’re here and I’m pretty sure we’re the same person and I’m also pretty sure we’re not supposed to exist together.” Or at least, that’s what the movies always said. “And who wounded you? Why?”
The last question makes something in Future Him shudder, face darkening. Then, he shakes his head, a faint smile taking over. “I feel as though I should be asking you the questions.” Future Him turns his head, coughing into his shoulder. “Why are you here? How did you get here?”
“Well…” Dream says, “I was playing hide and seek with Crossy and Kiki. The bedrooms were off limits, of course, but they didn’t say the basement was off limits, so I decided to hide in one of the storage rooms—the ones past the dungeons, that way.” He points, knowing Future Him would get the idea.
Leaning back, he thinks, at the point where he’s not sure of the details. “And then I saw a mirror, which was odd because everything else was dusty and the mirror wasn’t. I tried to touch it because it must be magical if it wasn’t dusty like everything else. Only my hand went through the glass, which was weird, and then something—I think it was a rat—ran over my foot and I fell. When I got up, the whole room was, like, swapped around. If that makes sense? And when I looked back, the mirror was gone.” He is quiet for a moment as he remembers. Then he brightens. “And then I found you.”
Future Him’s brow furrows. He seems to be struggling to keep up. Dream doesn’t blame him. It does sound a little weird said out loud. “…Crossy and Kiki?” he says after some time, saying the names slowly. “Do you mean…Cross and Killer?”
Dream nods, happy that Future Him recognized them. “Yeah. Who else? There’s also Dusty, who was busy experimenting in his room, and Rory, who went out with Nighty for groceries—and you already know who Nighty is.” As he lists them, he gets to his feet in excitement. “Oh! There’s also Roro, but he’s not around as often as the others.”
“I…see.”
Seeing that Future Him was still worried, Dream smiles, trying to reassure him. “They take really good care of me, don’t worry.”
Future Him just looks at him for a moment before looking away, rubbing his wrists again.
If Dream thought he looked horrible from outside the cell, he’s even worse close up. Bandages wrap around him everywhere, even covering one of his eyes. His brow is still furrowed, heavy lines etched on his face. He seems to be lost somewhere, no longer in the present. Does he need help getting back? He’s not sure if he’ll be able to help. Future Him doesn’t seem to be in much harm, though, so it’s probably fine.
But his one eyelight is dim, and he seems to be weighed down by something. He looks exhausted. He looks sick, actually, with a faint seen of sweat on his forehead. They should really get back upstairs and get him to a bed. Of course, they might run into the others, but maybe they can get lucky and avoid them until Future Him is asleep and he’s sneaking out of the room to go and inform the others of what happened.
From the far end of the hall, a door thuds shut.
Dream freezes in place, feeling much like he’s about to be in trouble. But then he recognizes the aura that seems to be walking toward them. He relaxes. It’s just Nighty. That’s good. He might be worried he was away for so long and scold him for being down here without permission, but once he sees Future Him, they’ll have bigger things to worry about.
That’s if it even is his Nighty. He realizes it might not be. This might not even be his world—he remembers watching a few movies where the main characters went to an alternate world with different versions of themselves or their friends. This could be the same thing. Would answer a few questions. But that shouldn’t matter. It’s Nighty. It’s still his brother. He’s still the same person. Nighty will want to help, of course, because no matter his version or another one, Nighty is a big worrywart and Future Him needs someone to worry over him.
His brother is the perfect person for the job.
Beaming, he steps forward, already calling out “Nighty!” when he gets pulled from behind and tugged close to Future Him’s chest.
Blinking, it takes him a moment to catch up. He tries to wiggle out of his hold, but Future Him is apparently really strong and doesn’t budge an inch, tightening his grip and pulling him even closer. He’s facing his chest, nothing but his shirt and bandages in his vision, which is terrible because Nighty will need someone to explain to him what’s going on and Future Him is in no state to do that and he can’t explain tucked away like this.
Physically moving doesn’t seem to be getting him anywhere, so he tries to talk to Future Him. “Um, future me?” he says, turning his head. “It’s okay, it’s just Nighty—”
Above him, Future Him shushes him, repeating the motion more times than is necessary. “Just stay quiet.”
“But it’s Nighty.”
“Nightmare.” Future Him says, though it sounds like he’s talking more to himself than anything. Shuffling, he slowly moves back into a corner, bringing Dream with him. “You mean Nightmare.”
Dream frowns. What’s the difference? “I think I mean Nighty.”
“Just—” Voice breaking, Future Him seems to stop breathing for a moment, before remembering he has to breathe to stay alive. His breathing gets all funny, coming out fast and short. “Just trust me, okay? Stay silent, stay hidden.”
“But why?” He feels bad for whining like this, but what else can he do? This isn’t how it was supposed to go. They shouldn’t be hiding like something’s coming to get them.
It’s just Nighty.
Future Him still seems to be talking to himself, distant answers as he watches the door like it might spring to life and attack them. “He won’t be able to hurt you like this.”
“Why would he hurt me? It’s Nighty…” Dream gives one last struggle, Future Him’s arms tightening around him even more—honestly, how tight can he go? It feels unnatural. Safe, yes, very, but uncomfortable.
Glaring at the bandages in front of him, he huffs. He is so confused. And concerned. Who wouldn’t be? This was nothing like how his Nighty explained things. Nothing at all. Future Him wasn’t supposed to be injured and chained up. Future Him wasn’t supposed to be hiding him from their brother. Even with all of these pieces in front of him, this puzzle was so difficult to put together. He hated it. He wanted to go home. His home, not this weird backward place where Future Him was behind a cell and their brother seemed to have something to do with that.
It…was their brother, right? What is he even saying, of course it is! Future Him was just…he doesn’t know. Mistaken, maybe. Yeah. Mistaken. But Nighty would never imprison him, he knows Nighty, he would never do that. Maybe he was reading things wrong. Maybe Nighty didn’t do all of this, maybe he was here to rescue them! That would make more sense. That would be more like Nighty.
But if that was true… then why was Future Him acting like this? Why was his breath hitching, why was there the slightest tremor in his arms? Why was he hiding Dream? What was going on here?
As Nighty’s aura enclosed on them, the comforting feeling of safety and reassurance and everything his brother was, he leans forward, focusing. It’s easier to do this in such a close proximity. He focuses on Future Him and gently reaches out, trying to feel for his emotions and soul. It’s harder to hide that way. Maybe he can get some answers, at least something to go off of.
Immediately, he regrets it.
And surrounding both is a vicious mix of heartbreak and betrayal.
Bitterness pools in his mouth and he gasps in surprise. From Future Him, the emotions crowd around him, blocking out Nighty’s aura entirely. They’re rapidly switching, hovering in the air, going back and forth and back and forth between desperation, need to protect him, can’t let him be seen, need to protect him, and fear, why is he here, why is he here, it hasn’t been that long, please go away, I can’t handle any more pain.
…what? What?
That’s not right. This can’t be right.
Swallowing the bitterness, Dream automatically grips the back of Future Him’s shirt and he shifts, trying to look up at him as he whispers, “Why are you so afraid of him…?”

Greetings!!! So... A thought... you know the OSD Stone Sleep au...
OSDiff Stone Sleep.
Dream in a weakened state in an au seeped in negitivity last time that happened he turned to stone. And this time... well he might not fight it. He can feel it and just lets it happen he's sick, scared and in pain... maybe being a statue isn't so bad after all.
Someone coming in to check on him. One of the boys for guard duty or Nightmare himself only to find Dream laying there nothing more then a statue... he looks... peaceful...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well uh... Congratulations on finding what must be the one of the most depressing endings that OSDiff could possibly have... Because wow that is a sad idea you have come up with, my friend.
Of course I am very aware of the OSD Stone!Sleep AU by @calcium-cat but an OSDiff version?!
Where to begin...
First off... THE FACT DREAM JUST LETS IT HAPPEN??? Like WHOA that is so angsty and so dang sad... The idea Dream has just completely given up after what Nightmare has done so decides he's better off as a stone statue... YIKES!!! I will say tho that while OSDiff Dream is in a pretty poor state right now in the fanfic, I don't believe he has quite gotten to THIS level of despondence... He has some hope still (believe it or not) it's just buried underneath all the pain of what Nightmare just put him through. But for the sake of this AU, yes I am willing to accept that Dream is at the absolute lowest point he can go and thus decides he's better off as a statue.... The poor thing :/.
I still can't decide whether I'd prefer if its one of the boys who discovers Dream's statue or Nightmare himself. Because the boys discovering it first could lead to a scene where Nightmare is contemplating his actions from the Prologue in his office (think start of Chapter 1) and instead of Cross telling Nightmare he's sick, Dream is already a statue and Nightmare can do nothing but rush down to the dungeon to see for himself. So many emotions go through Nightmare's mind as he sees his statue there, confusion at first, denial and of course anger. This wasn't supposed to happen like this. He wasn't finished with Dream yet! He was still meant to be suffering, but instead he had chosen to turn back into a statue to avoid his wrath?! No... That wasn't fair to him! He had been planning this for so long, yet Dream had to go and ruin it just like that?! How could he do that to him?! Why did nothing ever work out the way he intended it too?! Now he'll never get his revenge on Dream... He'll never find peace or happiness. He stares at the statue for a while, lost in his own spiralling thoughts before he finally moves it to one of his tower rooms, locking the door behind him.
The most important thing to remember about this particular OSDiff Nightmare (and probably one of his most tragic traits) is that in this timeline, Dream's sudden change into a statue doesn't allow him to go through the character growth he would have gone through in the normal OSDiff timeline, meaning he is not yet at the point where he would want to mourn Dream or regret his actions despite what's happened. There is no connection, bonding or talking between brothers in this timeline, which leads this Nightmare to shove Dream to an almost untouched section of the hideout where Nightmare can simply attempt to forget about him. He's buried but still there, shoved to a section of the castle, just like the grief and loss shoved to the corner of his mind. Dream turning to stone is definitely a tragic aspect of this AU, but I also find Nightmare's lack of character growth and the fact he's never able to regret his actions just as tragic. He'd be lucky to ever feel true happiness again after Dream turns to stone in that timeline...
I swear I have so many ideas for this AU, especially because it has so much potential, but I just have no time to write them ugh :'(. If any of you wanna write your take on this scenario, though please feel free I would absolutely love to see that.

One Small Difference Prologue
Prologue: An Eye for An Eye In which Nightmare takes revenge against his brother, before realising a little too late that revenge might not be what he really wanted. Neither brother has a good time.
~~~
THE ANGST IS FINALLY HERE =3!!! Here's the beginning of One Small Difference for all of you to enjoy!
I really hope you enjoy OSDiff's prologue but please do take a look at the beginning notes (and tags) to check out the content warnings before reading this first, very angsty part of the story! The prologue will be the darkest chapter of the fanfic though so if you can get past that, then hopefully the rest of the fanfic will be a breeze for you!
Comments for the fanfic both on Tumblr and AO3 would be gratefully appreciated :3!
Thanks so much if you decide to check out the story, but regardless if you do or not, I hope everyone reading this has an amazing day ^w^!
Oh and thanks @calcium-cat for being a wonderful beta-reader, bestie!
Next OSDiff chapter update: 23rd January :3
Killer & Dust: doesn't like Dream being in the hideout cause its stressing Nightmare out
Dream being a prisoner: I would leave if I was able to... please just let me go I hate it here
Nightmare *visibly stressed out while talking to Dust and Killer*: How many times do I have to tell you both that Dream's presence in the hideout isn't bothering me at all?
Dust and Killer *exchanging looks before glancing back at Nightmare with a 'Seriously?' expression*:
Dream in the background *wishing he could be literally anywhere else right now.*
Well at least OSDiff Nightmare will be facing his denial sooner rather than later because of his actions... Unlike some hehe ;)
One Small Difference Bonus Drabble
The Beginning.
A drabble that takes place right after Nightmare returns to the cell after checking up on Horror in One Small Dream Chapter 2 and can be considered the start of the OSDiff story diverging from the OSD story.
Written by both me and @calcium-cat (who kindly gave me permission to use one of the flashback scenes from an OSD drabble of hers in this drabble, as well as the first line below, which is from OSD chapter 2 so I'm able to show where the two stories start to differ).
Warnings for angst (less than the Prologue) and implied torture (again related to what happens to Dream just before and during the Prologue).
Hope you all enjoy ^w^
Nightmare looked down at his twin.
Yes, it seems as though Dream is still lying unconscious as a result of the potion, having not moved an inch from the spot where Nightmare left him when he went to check up on Horror per Cross’s request.
He nudges his brother’s motionless body with a tentacle, pleased to find Dream’s aura has completely faded from his body, no longer burning him like it did before.
A huge grin forms on Nightmare’s face as he chuckles darkly to himself. Now he can really get started with his revenge.
But before that…
Nightmare slips a tentacle under Dream’s crown, pulling it rather harshly off of his skull right after. His brother won’t be needing that here in the cell and he certainly doesn’t want to see him wearing it every time he comes down here to punish Dream.
In fact… he should probably just get rid of it altogether, considering his brother lost the right to call himself their tree's guardian centuries ago. He doesn’t deserve to proudly wear the crown on his skull with a smile on his face everywhere he goes…
Nightmare opens a small shadowy portal in front of him that leads to the void, holding Dream’s crown just above it to drop it in. Once he lets go, the crown will be lost in there forever… never to be seen again…
He looks from the crown to his brother several times with a slight frown on his face, thinking over his decision to throw away one of Dream’s most precious possessions.
Hmm… maybe it would be better if he hangs onto the crown for now, instead of getting rid of it altogether like he originally intended and not because he has any attachment to the foul object in his hands himself of course…
Nightmare is sure the crown will be a valuable tool that he can perhaps use against his brother later. Then when his brother least expects it, he can dispose of the wretched thing as Dream watches on, powerless to stop him from destroying his beloved headpiece.
Yes… seeing his brother’s despair in that moment will surely make it worth the wait of holding onto in the meantime.
His mind made up, Nightmare closes his shadowy portal to the void and places the crown in his hoodie pocket for the time being. Once he’s back in his room, he’ll throw the annoying object in the wardrobe with the other one…
He’ll decide how exactly he’ll use it against Dream later…
Nightmare looks down at his unconscious brother again, wondering what else he can take away from Dream to make his stay in the cell even more unbearable.
The corrupted skeleton’s eye light lands on his brother’s gloved hands, causing a scowl to form on Nightmare’s face. Those gloves give Dream a better grip on his infuriating bow, the same bow that has shot arrow after arrow into his corrupted body. They also tend to provide his brother’s hands and arms good protection during battles.
But they won’t be protecting them any longer while he’s here…
Nightmare quickly strips his brother of both his gloves, leaving Dream’s arms and hands completely bare. He then tosses these into the void, finding no reason to keep the gloves when he knows he won’t need these to potentially bribe Dream with.
With Dream’s gloves removed he’ll actually be able to see the damage he does to the bones on his arms later during his revenge.
Now then… there’s just one more thing he needs to take care of before he can start his brother’s punishment.
Nightmare gently grasps Dream’s cape in one of his tentacles before pulling it over his brother’s skull.
Oh how he’s longed to rip his brother’s beloved cape to shreds for centuries, but all he had managed in that time was one large tear in the fabric that Dream had, of course, found a way of fixing when he started wearing his new outfit to their battles.
But now there’s nothing that can stop him from destroying the cape entirely so there won’t be even a thread of it left in existence.
He holds it between his two hands, pulling a little in preparation to rip the delicate fabric in one strong, swift movement.
Nightmare peers down at the skeleton still lying unconscious on the ground. Dream will be waking up any moment now to see him tearing the cape apart and he won’t stop until there’s nothing left of it, no matter how much his brother begs and screams at him to stop.
It… shouldn’t be too hard to break it surely… just… one small tug should do the trick…
… So why can’t Nightmare move his arms to do the deed right now…
Is it because of… that memory…?
“Okay… you can look now.” Dream instantly opened his eyes, his sunny eyelights expanding in their wide sockets, and gasped.
"Oh wow, Nighty, it's beautiful!" he exclaimed with awed excitement.
"I thought you'd like it," Nightmare smirked as his brother took the blanket from him.
Dream wrapped it around his shoulders and nuzzled his cheek against it. "It's so soft…" he said, then added "Hey, look! It makes a great cape too, see!"
He started to run in a circle around him, his "cape" trailing behind him in the wind.
Nightmare pressed a hand to his mouth and laughed, "It's not going to stay on."
Dream halted in front of him and frowned. “Oh yeah… oh! Wait-I got an idea…” Dream trailed off as he started fiddling with his tunic clasp.
When he got it undone, he tried to use it to pin the blanket to his shirt collar and predictably struggled to do so, his browbone furrowing in frustration. While Nightmare thought it was a silly idea, he rolled his eyelights and stepped forward.
“Here, let me do it,” he said, stretching out his hands.
Dream agreed and let him try. It took a couple, but he eventually pinned both the clasp and corners to his brother’s collar. He adjusted the star pendant upright before standing back and giving his fidgety twin his space.
“There. Is that good?”
Dream lifted his arms out and started spinning this way and that, looking over his shoulder at the tail of his “cape” flapping behind him.
“It’s perfect!” he finally exclaimed, and Nightmare couldn’t help but smile at the pure happiness radiating from his brother.
Whether it was a “cape” or blanket, if it made Dream happy, that’s all that mattered.
Suddenly, Dream lunged at him, wrapping his arms in a tight embrace. Miraculously, Nightmare managed to remain upright, and once the shock wore off, he returned the hug a touch more gently.
“Thank you so so much, Nighty, I love it, I really really love it…!”
As thoughts of the memory fade, Nightmare’s tentacles seem to move on their own, picking Dream slightly off the floor just enough so he’s able to slip the cape back onto Dream’s shoulders without difficulty where it belongs.
Although a part of him still wants to ruin Dream’s cape… he knows he’s not quite ready to do that yet there’s too many memories attached to it… and although painful to think about… he doesn’t want them to be destroyed with the cape just yet.
At some point during his revenge, he’ll make sure to take the opportunity to tear it to pieces… but just… not at this very second… or soon for that matter.
Dream can keep it on him in the meantime… but only because he doesn’t want the damn thing cluttering up his wardrobe… not for any other reason…
As Nightmare fixes the cape so it sits correctly on Dream’s shoulders like before, his brother begins to stir, groaning painfully as his eye sockets slowly flicker open.
Nightmare retracts his tentacles from Dream’s cape immediately, his eye light wide at the thought of his brother figuring out what he was doing before he regained consciousness, but the other skeleton is still clearly too out of it to realize what just happened… or to know where he is right now.
After a moment, Dream’s fuzzy eye lights meet his own, causing a puzzled yet exhausted frown to form on his twin’s face as he squints up at him.
“N…Night…mare?”
The sound of Dream weakly calling out his name causes a malicious smile to form on Nightmare’s face as he narrows his eye socket to stare down at his brother.
“Rise and shine, Dream~.” Nightmare sneers at his twin, wrapping a tentacle around his waist and arms before shaking the clearly disoriented skeleton in an attempt to wake him up a little.
Dream whines in discomfort before trying to opens his eye sockets a little more, though they remain half lidded and droopy, making it look as if his brother is struggling to take in his surroundings right now. A side effect of the potion perhaps?
Well… that just makes things even easier for him.
His dazed brother held tightly in his grip, Nightmare starts to walk over to the far wall of the cell, where a number of chains have been left lying on the floor in preparation for his brother’s stay.
The corrupted skeleton’s smile becomes truly unhinged as he glances from his brother to those restraints, his eye light flashing for a moment before he speaks to the other skeleton once more.
“Welcome to your new home for the next week Dream.” Nightmare smirks, making sure to make eye contact with his brother as he does this and is rewarded when he sees Dream’s more focused eye lights shrink fearfully. “I’m sure you’ll have a dreadful stay here.”
Once he reaches the far wall of the cell, he drops Dream from his tentacles so that his brother falls onto the floor with a loud thud, causing him to let out a cry of pain.
The sound is music to Nightmare’s skull.
He steps forward so that he’s towering above Dream’s pained and hunched over figure, casting a large shadow onto his terrified twin.
Backed up against a wall and knowing now that his magic has been rendered utterly useless by whatever he had been forced to drink before falling unconscious, Dream can do nothing but stare up at Nightmare in pure fear. His mind races in horror as he thinks about what this corrupted version of his brother can do to him at this state. Just what does Nightmare have in mind for him here?
“Now then brother…” Nightmare grins widely, forcefully grabbing Dream’s left arm in one tentacle and a restraint in another, all while staring unblinking at his brother the entire time.
He almost can’t believe it…
His revenge…
It’s finally about to happen…
And he’s going to make sure it tastes so sweet.
“…I think it’s time we start having a little fun in here together… wouldn’t you agree...?”
~~~
Hope you all enjoyed!
Like I mentioned before, the flashback scene is from one of the extra drabbles written by calcium-cat for OSD, which I thought would work perfectly here to show why Nightmare just can't bear take the cape away from Dream. Also because the timelines in OSD and OSDiff are meant to be the same up until a certain point, it only makes sense that the flashback of Nightmare giving Dream his cape be the same in both stories.
Hope you're all excited for the next chapter of OSDiff which will be coming out in 9 days (yes, I'm counting down the days, but not just because of the chapter coming out ;3). I'll be sure to release a teaser at some point before then.
Feel free to ask me any questions about this drabble or the prologue over on AO3 if you wish. The ask box is always open ^w^
Thanks for reading down this far! Have a wonderful day!

Nightmare: why can't Dream see that I am still the same person? I don't need fixing! I am fine!
Dream: now has a hole in his skull thanks to Nightmare, was trapped in stone for 500 years so never had that time to yah know deal with those events.
Well Nightmare in OSDiff is trying to prove to Dream that he is very much not the same skeleton he grew up with in Dreamtale actually, by showing Dream that he no longer cares about him, is very happy without him and can hurt him without regret…
Turns out all of that is pretty much untrue though…
Basically Nightmare is in a whole lot of denial and it's going to take him seeing how much he's damaged his brother to get him to let go of a couple centuries worth of resentment and plans to punish him.
The image below should show you where exactly Nightmare's plan went wrong tho haha ^^:
Tumblr media
Dream definitely doesn't deserve any of the suffering he goes through though... But things will get better in time.

One Small Difference Fic Summary
Inspired by and based on Calcium-Cat's fic One Small Dream, but with one small key difference:
What if the potion that turned Dream into a babybones actually worked the way it was intended and simply suppressed Dream's magic instead?
What if Nightmare got to exact the revenge he'd been planning to take on his brother and really made Dream pay for what he did to him all those centuries ago?
Will doing so finally bring him happiness?
And if not… will it be too late to fix what he's broken…?
~~~
So yep, in case it wasn't clear by yesterday, this new fanfic of mine has been inspired by and is indeed an AU of @calcium-cat's One Small Dream :3.
I came up with the idea for this fic quite a few months ago, when after reading/enjoying the art of so many AUs with Baby Dream in it, I wondered what exactly could've happened in canon OSD if the magic suppressor worked the way it was meant to and Dream never actually became a babybones. I was feeling pretty angsty at the time ^^'.
So I asked Cal (privately) how she thought that kind of story would go and after receiving quite a few angsty ideas in return (thanks bestie :3), I just knew I was going to have to write my own version of this AU.
One Small Difference's Prologue is titled An Eye for An Eye and was actually originally an extra chapter I had no intention of putting in the fic at all... Until I decided I really liked the writing in it and so put it as the fic's very angsty new beginning =3.
The Prologue for One Small Difference shall finally be out tomorrow.
Hope you're all looking forward to it ^^
Horror or Cross is going to go soft for the truamatised Dream first. Like him? Probably nit but they'll be soft for him!!!
Well... there's actually a small chance that both of them have already gone soft on Dream... Not that they would ever admit it of course... not yet anyway ;3.
You see between the events of the Prologue and Chapter 1, Cross and Horror have been Dream's main caretakers guards and the ones tasked with feeding him, patching him up after the Prologue incident etc. During that time Dream has changed from a constantly chatty, somewhat daring prisoner to well.... the quiet, broken skeleton he is now. Its hard for Cross and Horror not to feel sorry for Dream in this state, especially since they saw exactly how Nightmare left him after the Prologue scene.
I'll probably briefly touch on their opinions of Dream more throughly in the canon story at some point later, but a part of me wants to write a drabble of how they reacted upon seeing what their boss did to his brother...
If you'd be interested in a chapter like that here let me know :3!
It's finally time for me to reveal the fic name to you all!
My new fic is called:
'One Small Difference'
Huh... Now that title sure sounds familiar to another favourite fic of mine that I'm sure all of you reading this have most likely read too... Right ;D?
Well I won't be giving away much more about that today in this post at least, but here's two separate small snippets from the prologue to give you a slightly better idea of what's going on:
~~~
Finally after centuries of waiting, Nightmare is at last enacting his revenge on his infuriating brother thanks to Sci's magic suppressing potion, which had worked exactly like he hoped it would...
~~~
Now Nightmare can only see an image of the brother who betrayed him kneeling before him, one who chose those villagers over him and wasn't there for him when he needed him most...
One who let them cut down the tree and take everything they should've been protecting together...
The brother who deserves to pay for his sins...
And Nightmare definitely plans on helping him pay...
~~~
Just two more days to go until you all get to see the entire prologue, so hope you're excited! Tomorrow I'll give you One Small Difference's (or OSDiff if you prefer ;3) fic summary and the Prologue's chapter title.

So I've heard from a few people that they're not really sure what Dream's skull would look like after Nightmare injures it in OSDiff (I'm not the best at descriptive writing so that's probably my fault haha ^^').
It might sound like Nightmare did quite a lot of damage from the way I described it, but he didn't create a huge hole in his skull like Horror's or anything to that extent. In fact most of the damage he did do was... Unintentional...
Below this I have two images of Dream's skull and an explanation of what Nightmare planned to do vs. the damage that was actually done. Hopefully it gives you all a better idea of what I had in mind.
Warnings for blood and injury under the cut
Tumblr media
Most of the cracks Dream has in his skull now will vanish overtime, but although the Save star shaped hole will become a little smaller, it won't ever heal over fully. It will be the one thing to forever remind both himself and his brother what the latter did to him.

One Small Diff is so good and so heartbreaking. Dream is traumatized and Nightmare is very confused by his own feelings. I read Sickness and dear goodness, it reminded me of a quote from another fanfic write when Nightmare was subtly taking care of Dream with carrying him and tucking him in bed (even tho Noot put him there in the first place): Even after everything they’d been through, the bad blood and all…Nightmare is still big brother…great chapter, aaaaaaahhhhh…
Thank you so much ^^! Glad you're enjoying the fic!
Exactly, I think a part of what makes this scene particularly sad is that in another situation, this could have been Nightmare sweetly taking care of his sickly brother, but because of the path he's chosen, both brothers struggle to look each other in the eye lights as Nightmare continues having regrets over his actions (which he continues to be in denial about) and Dream falls further into despair as the former tucks his brother into the bed.
Originally I planned to end this scene with Dream having a little bit more hope and saying something to Nightmare as he left, but then I thought:
And decided to go the full Hurt/No Comfort route for this chapter, because lets face it, neither brother is going to have recovered from the last chapter just yet.
(Video extract taken from this video by Calebcity, dumb text edit added in by me haha ^^')

Dream being allowed a shower... someone (coughDustorKillercough) stealing his clothes.
Hmm, well while Dust and Killer don't exactly like Dream being in the hideout in OSDiff due to the stress that his presence is clearly bringing Nightmare, I don't think they'd go as far as to steal his clothes like that. Mainly because doing so would just make Nightmare even more stressed and most likely annoyed at them. A prank like that wouldn't really benefit either of them and certainly won't improve Nightmare's mood that's for sure.
Your ask did make me realise that I need to include a section of a chapter where Dream gets to clean himself up tho and its given me a few ideas on how to make that work ~~some of which are even angsty :3!~~ so thanks for giving me the idea Anon ^w^!
Feel free to send me more chapter ideas anytime!
