I was wondering, what did you use to make the helmet/visor for you Gabbro cosplay? It looks fantastic and I'm figuring out making one sometime next year. (Thanks in advance!)
Hey, thank you! So the materials that I used were:
- 10mm EVA foam for the helmet
-Helmet painted with FX flexible acrylic paint
- galvanized 14 gauge wire (from home Depot) for the antennae (and I 3d printed the antenna teaspoons from an online template). I made the antennae thicker and cartoonier by doubling them up and keeping them in place with a thinner silver crafting wire.
-to keep the antennae in place, I used mixture of hot glue and thermoplastic pellets stuffed into some thin PVC tubes I cut short and covered in thin EVA foam (for strength- those antennae can be heavy and I was afraid it would cut the EVA foam alone).
- A transparent protective document sleeve for the visor- you know those flexible but tough types you buy to protect art prints. I cut it with an x-acto until it matched the window shape in the helmet.
- For the reflective effect, I used one-way mirror window film, specifically this one, and squeegeed it onto the document sleeve. To get it glued into the helmet, I had to really carefully use a balance of hot glue to get it to stay and E6000 to get it to stay permanently. Be VERY careful about bubbles because this stuff loves to delaminate on curved surfaces.
To form the helmet shape, I basically made the shape I wanted using crumpled paper, cardboard, and tape, and then I made a template using cling wrap and duct tape on the model. There's quite a few tutorials for making EVA foam helmets online.
Let me know if you need any more details!

I have been seeing a lot of discourse on certain tags lately about fanfiction and writing fics that are “out of character”. And I don’t like conflict, so I was keeping my nose out. But now I’ve seen some things that I just can’t let go, and as the self-proclaimed fandom mom, I feel like I need to step in and state this loud and clear—
Fandom is for you.
The whole point of fanfic and fanart and cosplay and anything fan related is for you, the fan, to take a work that has already been created and have fun with it. Make it your own. Dive in and explore and do what you will. Fandom is meant to be a creative outlet where you can share ideas and art with other people who have the same interests as you.
THAT BEING SAID: it is never. And I repeat, NEVER okay to gatekeep fandom. And yeah, I fucking hate the word gatekeep. But it’s the only way to describe what I’m seeing happening. And so I’m going to use it again—
It is never okay to gatekeep fandom. It is never okay to gatekeep characters. And to throw negativity at anyone’s work, let alone come straight out and tell them that they’re wrong for shaping a character a certain way— I’m sorry, but where do you get off? I am completely understanding of wanting characters to stay true to the source material. I am completely understanding of having your own opinions about/expectations for a character and wanting them to behave a certain way. But YOU, my dear friend (or rather, we), are not the creator of those characters. Which means that we have no right to tell someone else what they can or cannot do with them.
The whole point of fandom is to let your imagination run wild. And if that means that a typically good character leans more evil in a fic, fine. If they make decisions you don’t agree with, great. If they do things that directly contradict what would have happened in the source material, even better!!
LET. PEOPLE. CREATE.
Let them throw characters into crazy situations and analyze how they react. Let them stretch them out like putty and poke at all of the soft bits inside. Let them shape them into something completely other just to see what happens. Let them be curious. Let them explore. Let them have fun.
Fandom should be fun.
And the second one person starts dictating what is right or wrong for a character or a ship, that’s the second it stops being fun. And that’s when fandoms die.
Don’t gatekeep something that doesn’t belong to you. Because again— It doesn’t belong to you.
You are allowed to have your own opinions. You are allowed to have your own expectations for characters. But who do you think you are, to flat out tell someone (or a group of people) that the way they write someone is wrong? That the way they have imagined something is wrong? That their creativity, their expression, their joy, is wrong? Or, as I’ve seen more recently, when someone gets dejected by the posts you’ve made telling them they’re creating wrong, you have the audacity to tell them “that’s okay, now that you know you did something I don’t like, you can reevaluate your work and try to improve!”
How dare you.
Because once again, I hate to break it to you, but you’re not the creator of these characters. And I’m going to go out on a limb and say that the actual creator is probably just so happy to see the diversity of idea that has sprung from their creation. So who do you think you are, to dictate an entire fandom?
If you don’t like it, move along. Click out of the fic, find something else to read. I understand having frustrations when things don’t go as you’d hoped, when a piece of work that you were excited about crosses those outer lines of your expectations and you feel disappointed. Again. But you know what? That’s your expectation. What about the person halfway across the world who reads the same fic and finds themselves in it? Finds a small piece of comfort that encourages them to hold on for just one more day. What happens when your words completely discourage the creators of your fandom, have them second guessing themselves? What happens when they lose confidence and stop creating completely? What happens when the fandom dies, and suddenly there’s nothing new to explore— to your standards or not?
You are allowed to have your opinions. Of course you are. You are allowed to express them. But you are never. EVER. allowed to tell people that they are wrong for making art that you don’t agree with. For using their imagination in a way that doesn’t fit into your small box of approval.
Let creators find happiness.
Let creators create.

purely out of my own curiosity
any of y'all planning cosplays or have a 'if I had the time/money/energy/skill set I would do this' cosplay that is currently not achievable?
(I'm (hopefully) making some progress on Gabbro from Outer Wilds cosplay this weekend but. If I could. 10 Vigilant Gaze from Kill 6 Billion Demons would be so cool)

Fallout: New Vegas is really about Domination, in the political sense. All the Obsidian games are, Pillars, KOTOR2, Outer Worlds, and yup Pentiment, all of them about are about domination, but in New Vegas it was explored with the factions of Caesar's Legion and the NCR. That makes them interesting games, "Domination" as a concept often doesn't hit quite in the sweet spot for me in political concepts but it's still makes for good storytelling.
Bethesda saw that people really liked New Vegas and so in Skyrim and Fallout 4 they figured "oh people really liked this faction stuff, let's create factions with a cool gimmick" so you get the Stormcloaks vs Empire and Minutemen vs Institute, the thing with these is though that they seem to be mostly cosplay and theme park and maybe some vague idea of a child's version of "freedom?" They have trouble making these factions appear stand for something, they don't seem to understand how to do it.
Anyways in Starfield looks like the two major factions are going to be the Space UN and the Space wild west, exciting ain't it?

Top 5 Dream Cosplays, like the most complex costumes you'd create with infinite time and resources
Oh you cannot MAKE ME CHOOSE you SCOUNDREL
5. Fallout 4 deathclaw. I wanna be. Big lizard.
Tumblr media
4. Oralech from pyre
Tumblr media
Wigs and makeup are my Achilles heel in cosplay so while this one isn't particularly complex, I'd need a lot of time to learn like 8 new skills
3. Zant from twilight princess
Tumblr media
I mean????
Tbh I could spend a year on just the helmet alone
2. Outer wilds nomai space suit
Tumblr media
I actually had plans to build this one, but it turned out to be far too complex and extremely large for the resources and space I have available. Ranked high on this list because it's ALMOST WITHIN MY GRASP.....
1. Pacific rim otachi
Tumblr media
This one combines the "I unfortunately have to walk on two legs" problem with the "where would I even PUT THAT" question. but I really like the creature design a normal healthy amount

How will obey me brothers dance with you?
Lucifer:
Slow ball dance of course!
But pulling you closer than needed of course~
Slow and gentle moves, he will maintain eye contact with you
Will bent down to give you a gentle but passionate kiss
Mammon:
Damn! Wild Mammon so wild dance obviously!
He will play some stupid rock music and do essentric dance and you will join this cutie!
But then turns out Mammon was joking and shows his real talent! And damn he looks hot
Definitely will stumble upon something and fall on top of you and have an accidental kiss
Leviathan:
Dancing on anime songs!
He might just make you cosplay as Ruri Chan while you two dance
But in all honesty! This guy is extremely cute while dancing because I imagine him to be very clumsy lol
Will try to hug you while dancing but then will get too shy and faint
Satan:
Haah~ slow and sensual!
Somehow I imagine a lot of physical touch
But not of the bad kind! Very comfortable! Soft hand touching, gentle hugging etc.
All of his touchings are to prepare you for a very soft and gentle kiss~ while he caresses your cheeks
Asmodeus:
Oh god! He is too much!!
Club dancing! Definitely and very touchy and not some normal touches
Literally hip grinding with you and I am sure he considers is alright!
Extremely sensual and sexy~ might touch your outer thigh and just finds a reason to be close to your body and all this will end up in him pinning you to the wall while you two kiss
I can imagine him doing this in a real club
Beel:
Heeh !
He gets shocked when you suggest to dance with him
Poor baby was enjoying food from the party but then left it so that he can dance with you
He is normal with his dance, he doesn't try anything because doesn't want you to feel uncomfortable so he follows there lead!
Belphie:
LOL GOOD LUCK TRYING TO WAKE HIM UP!
He first denies but then gets up when he sees Mammon asking to dance with you
He loves to talk with you while you two enjoy the dance
Don't blame this poor baby if he sleeps on your shoulder in the middle of the song!
just kidding! Obviously he won't do that right? .... RIGHT!??

I had a ton of fun at ECCC 2023 ^^
Got to bring a few friends to their first comic con ever, met a local inspiration of mine, and got to dress up as some wild characters!
Who else attended ECCC this year?

I want to dress up as the swan from the movie The Other Sister or as one of the birds from Henny Penny episode from Golden Girls. The problem is, I have no idea how to even start making either. How were they able to get the shape for the body and be able to get in and out of it?
(Full disclosure, I haven't actually seen either of these, so I'm basing my recommendations on what screenshots I could pull up with an image search on airport wi-fi.)
There are actually a lot of options for creating a shaped body structure, depending on your budget and skill level. The lowest-budget option would be a shapeable wire mesh like hardware cloth, sculptural armature mesh, or even chicken wire (you'll want to wear heavy-duty leather work gloves to work with any of these; cut wire edges are sharp!). Use heavy gauge wire or another rigid material to create a structural frame (around the edge, and to support the weight of the body), then cover that with the more flexible mesh so you can shape the "skin" however you want. You can then cover the mesh with fabric, fusible felt, or thin EVA foam and attach the surface treatment (feathers, etc.) to that layer.
Going back about 15 years 😅 this is how I made my Archangel Michael wings, shown below as a WIP. The wire mesh pockets fit over the articulated PVC frame, with heavier (~10 ga.) wire ribs supporting the bell shape. These wings were much simpler and didn't require compound curves like the swan body would, but the principle is the same.
Tumblr media
If your budget is a bit higher, you could also consider materials such as Worbla's Kobracast Art, FossShape, or Celastic, which can be heat-formed and fused to fabric to create a seamless structure that needs no covering. These materials are a bit more sophisticated and look more professional, but they can be quite expensive over large areas, so they are more commonly used for costumes that need to be able to travel and remain durable (e.g. for theatre or a cosplay competition) rather than a one-off costume (e.g. for a Halloween party). You know best what your budget and costume purpose are, so choose whichever material best suits your needs and skills!
As for getting into/out of it... The Other Sister is actually a pretty simple design, as far as that goes. It's a one-piece step-in costume -- the actor's legs go through a hole in the bottom, and then it's pulled up around her hips as a single unit. It's supported by suspenders that (probably) attach to structural crossbars inside the frame, maybe with an additional stay somewhere to keep it from rotating around the actor's body. The Golden Girls one is more complicated, as it was made long enough ago that it would have used more traditional methods and materials. It's likely built with a combination of boning, buckram, steel wire, and padded fabric rolls attached to a boned corset/bustier for support (similar to the support structures for things like Vegas showgirl backpieces). There's probably a base garment that the various parts of the outer costume attach to. That's not to say you couldn't simplify it in your version, though! Lots of new materials have been invented in the past 40 years, so we have more versatile (and lighter weight) options now.
If you want to go really hog wild with this concept, you might also want to look up some tutorials for Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere. I've seen some phenomenal swan-body shapes come out of that cosplay community! And for additional structural support recommendations and patterning guidance, the fursuit/mascot building communities also have a lot of great resources and tutorials.
Good luck! :)

Wear what makes you happy. To express yourself. Wear what's comfortable, pracitical, showy, clashing... whatever! It's just a medium to express yourself and it doesn't matter that much so have fun with it. Or only wear what's basic. Bc people shouldn't judge you for what you wear and if they do, ignore them. I mean, holey jeans are in style. If even holes can be a style, wear anything. Don't bow to the whims of companies or culture. Jealously save your precious time and money.
Wear stuff that's cute and coordinated, or stuff with wild patterns... cosplay all the time.... whatever! Dye your hair or don't, put on nail polish or don't. It may be an expression of who you are but don't forget, outer appearance is just superficial, a small part of who you are and it's what's in your mind and heart that counts. Matters way more than what you look like which will change over time and there's nothing you can do about it.
External things shouldn't manipulate your emotions or how you see yourself. What's internal should be what guides you. And what's external is just a small piece of who you are and it's also hiding a lot. Kindness and your interests and talents are way more interesting, way more you.
