Discovering the Vegan Delights of Malta: A Culinary Journey
Tumblr media
In recent years, Malta has undergone a quiet culinary revolution. The Maltese islands, with their rich history and diverse culture, have traditionally been known for their hearty and meat-based cuisine. However, in a world increasingly embracing veganism and plant-based diets, Malta has not been left behind. Today, Malta is home to a thriving vegan food malta scene that caters to both locals and tourists. In this article, we will take you on a culinary journey through the vegan delights of Malta.
Veganism in Malta: A Growing Trend
The concept of veganism may have taken a while to gain traction in Malta, but the recent surge in vegan-friendly options is undeniable. As the world has become more conscious of the environmental impact of animal agriculture and the ethical treatment of animals, Maltese society has evolved in tandem. Many Maltese individuals have adopted plant-based diets, leading to a growing demand for vegan food.
The Maltese Vegan Experience
Maltese cuisine is heavily influenced by the island's historical and cultural ties to the Mediterranean. Traditional dishes often feature rich flavors and local ingredients. With the rise of veganism, chefs and home cooks alike have reimagined classic Maltese dishes, creating vegan versions that capture the essence of the originals.
One such dish is the pastizz, a savory pastry filled with either peas or lentils. Vegan pastizzi are readily available and are just as delicious as their non-vegan counterparts. Other traditional dishes that have undergone vegan makeovers include rabbit stew, typically made with mushrooms and other vegetables, and ftira, a popular Maltese sandwich that can be filled with various vegan ingredients.
Vegan-Friendly Eateries
Malta is home to a growing number of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants and cafes. These establishments offer a wide variety of vegan options, from traditional Maltese fare to international cuisines. One of the most popular vegan-friendly restaurants is 'The Grassy Hopper,' located in Valletta. Their menu features a range of plant-based dishes, including hearty burgers, fresh salads, and delectable vegan desserts.
For those craving a taste of Maltese vegan food, 'Gugar' in St. Julian's offers a selection of traditional vegan dishes prepared with a modern twist. It's an excellent place to sample veganized pastizzi and other local favorites. Moreover, 'Naan Bar' in Valletta offers an array of vegan Indian dishes that are both flavorful and filling.
Vegan Food Festivals and Events
Malta hosts various vegan food festivals and events throughout the year, attracting vegans and food enthusiasts from around the world. The 'Malta Vegan Festival' is one such event that has gained popularity. It showcases a wide range of vegan products, including food, cosmetics, and fashion items. Visitors can indulge in delicious vegan street food, attend cooking demonstrations, and gain insights into the vegan lifestyle.
Additionally, the 'Artichoke Festival' in Mellieha features a variety of vegan artichoke-based dishes and is a must-visit for anyone interested in vegan cuisine and local traditions.
Malta's Unique Vegan Ingredients
One of the fascinating aspects of exploring vegan food in Malta is the discovery of unique ingredients and products readily available to vegans. Maltese cuisine relies heavily on local produce, and many fruits and vegetables are grown on the island. This abundance of fresh ingredients makes it easier for vegans to enjoy a varied and healthy diet.
Malta is also known for its indigenous wild capers, which are often used to add a burst of flavor to dishes. These capers are naturally vegan and make a delicious addition to salads, pastas, and other dishes.
Vegan-Friendly Travel Tips
For travelers looking to explore Malta's vegan food scene, there are a few tips to keep in mind. When dining out, it's a good idea to inform the restaurant staff of your dietary preferences, as this ensures that your meal is prepared without any animal products. Additionally, there is a growing number of vegan-friendly accommodations, such as hotels and guesthouses, which can cater to your specific needs.
In conclusion, Malta is no longer just a destination for history buffs and beach lovers. It has transformed into a haven for vegans, offering a plethora of culinary delights, from traditional Maltese dishes with a vegan twist to international cuisines. Whether you're a dedicated vegan or simply interested in trying plant-based food, Malta's vegan food scene has something for everyone. So, the next time you visit these beautiful islands, make sure to embark on a vegan culinary journey that will leave your taste buds delighted and your conscience clear.

Cheese or peas? Maltese cuisine is Mediterranean-oriented, but the essential Maltese snack is the simple pastizz. Demand remains high for the traditional, crispy gold pastries that come filled with either ricotta or peas. For a proper Maltese breakfast try a couple of these pastizzi and a kinnie - or better still a ‘belgħa te' fit-tazza’ (that's tea in a glass, kazin-style). TAL-ĦAXU - MUSHY FILLING The mushy nature of the filling is why pastizzi are referred to as 'tal-ħaxu'. The word 'ħaxu' probably originates from Arabic while the French word 'haché', meaning 'finely chopped' could also be related to the word used for the pastizzi’s filling. In Maltese: Pastizzi ta' l-irkotta (cheese cakes); pastizzi tal-piżelli (pea cakes). TONY THE PASTIZZAR Kappa Vision thanks our man Tony Parnis for being patient to hold this hot tray of fresh-out-of-the-oven pastizzi for us to take the photo. Tony is a long-time pastizzar who was born in Birkirkara but lives in Ħamrun where he works in this pastizzeria found in St. Joseph High Street. Bit random but I’m Maltese and you comparing the stepstones to Malta made me so happy. My ancestors were heavy fishermen on their ferillas and we even still have a luzzu! We don’t use it much anymore. I also think some cool cultural headcannons could happen based on Malta. Our lanague is basically a mix of English, Italian and Arabic- so bacially a melting pot and I can see that for common tongue, Valyrian and other smaller lanagues all mixed. Oh and stepstones locals 100% invented the pastizzi!
Maltese Anon, I am happy that I could make you happy, and I am glad that you can celebrate your heritage and that I can help celebrate it with you. Malta is awesome, and I loved it when I studied the Great Siege. I want every Stepstoner to have some pastizz on their plate and ply their trade on their ferillas. I am totally with you that Stepstoners speak a trade pidgin that's a mishmash of the Westerosi Common Tongue with the bastard Valyrian dialects of the Triarchy.
I am happy when folks find ways to celebrate and take pride in their heritage. That goes for all of you, account and Anon alike. Celebrate who you are, where your parents and ancestors came from. Be proud of the unique confluence of circumstances that make you who you are.
Take care of yourself, Maltese Anon. Let's all of us have a good one.

Loki and pizza 🍕😂
I think he would like pizza, except pineapple on pizza. Not because he thinks the flavor is bad (he actually likes pineapple a lot and wouldn’t mind eating it, if there was no other choices), but finds the texture of the pineapple on pizza with the sauce, bacon, etc is just...weird. Gives him the same vibes as Twinkies.
Would like to have the pizzas he sees on the commercials (you know the ones, with the sexy cheese pulls and thicc crust?). Loki gets disappointed and will pout when the pizza is delivered and it’s not this piece of artwork and the cheese isn’t as stringy. He, however, will still eat the pizza, but he longs for the very, very tempting pizza that he sees on TV...he’ll get it someday. I believe in him.
Honestly, who would it surprise that, once Loki finds out that pizza originated from Italy, he’s going to drag Thor with him to get an “authentic” pizza and all its cousins related to the pizza to feast on. Calzones, stromboli, pastizz, and whatever the neighboring countries had to offer that was similar to pizza - and then come back to America to see what Chicago, Detroit, New York, etc. Thor would be having a ball while Loki is requesting for detailed information of the recipe and way it was made.
I think his favorite type of pizza would be filled with meats, peppers and extra, extra cheese. Maybe like a deep-dish? He can eat a few pizzas by himself (not as much as Thor, of course, but enough to get himself pictured on the board of customers who broke the record with his brother). It’s not something he would constantly eat every day or whenever he goes out, but he does enjoy them.

Manuel Cutajar, 39, from the EU-country Malta has reportedly undergone a surgery to expand the size of his stomach, which now has the capacity of two gallons. What sounds like the dream of many feeders, fat-admirers and other bulk-lovers, was actualy a medical necessity. Dr Robert Grixti, the surgeon to do the operation stated that expanding the patient´s stomach had to be done, to prevent the belly of the self-proclaimed food-lover Mr. Cutajar from exploding anytime soon. A procedure to bring him back some life qualiy and allowing him to munch on his more than 10 “pastizz´” for breakfast.
****************************************************************************************************
What was published as satire around the july of 2019, is now a surprisingly common procedure in the Odobasian Empire, especially among the grossly obese nobelity and newly immigrated humanoids, yet having to learn to digest these huge quantities of fattening foods, a true Odobasian would dismiss as “snacks”. It ain´t uncommon either to end up enlargening one´s belly multiple times.

(Queens)Eatsclipse Reenactment 🌕☀️🌑 This is the Ricotta and Spinach #pastizzi, kind of like a #empanada or #samosa from the island of #Malta (where Ashley's dad is from!) from #LelisBakery in #astoria #queens #nyc and it's one of the few places in New York where you can find #Maltese food and they do it pretty good, our favorite is their version of the #mushypea and meat #pastizz. However, the cheese was the most appropriate to play the moon 🌙Hope everyone had a glance at the #eclipse today! #queenseats #eclipse2017 (at Leli's Bakery)

Today we went to the beautiful capital of Malta, Valletta. We saw the Triton Fountain and walked down the historic Republic Street.
I tried the traditional savoury pastry originating from Malta. It is full of ricotta or mushy peas and is called Pastizz.
