An 1896 oil on canvas still-life, A Vase of Flowers, by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), the French post-impressionist painter. Painted in Tahiti and illustrating the artist's interest in still life continued wherever he lived, although it was often to produce a more saleable canvas than his figures and landscapes. This work was bought by Edgar Degas (1834-1917). (National Gallery, London)

YILLARA GÖRE GAUGUİN: 1874 Peyzajlar yapmak için çevreyi dolaşmış olup, isabetli bir duygusallık sezinlenmektedir. 1875 Empresyonistlerle arasında belli bir bağlantı görülmektedir. 1876 Tekniği yavaş yavaş yerleşmekte, şekilleri ölçülü bir biçimde yerli yerine oturmaktadır. 1879 Empresyonistlerin çekim alanına daha fazla girmektedir. 1880 Natürmortlarda dikkati çeken yeni teknik uygulaması görülmektedir. Sade bir yerleştirme yöntemi, doğaç bir taklit, genel açıdan atmosfere ve ışığa verilen önem, doğal karakteri korumaya yönelik bir amaç taşımaktadır. 1881 Mesafe sınırlı, ışık açıkhavadakine göre daha az yaygındır. 1883 Empresyonizmden kopma dönemidir. 1886 Doğadan esinlenmekle birlikte sadece peyzajı yansıtmakla kalmamış, bir takım elemanlar eklerneye başlamıştır. 1887 Kontür yöntemi ile empresyonistlerden ayrılmıştır. 1888 Kararlı bir yıl. Şekilleri net bir biçimde yansıtma, yüzeyleri de yaygın renklerle belirleme eğilimi kendini göstermiştir. 1889 Elinin altındaki gereçlere kesinlikle egemen durumda olup yeni tekniğini de eksiksiz uygulamaktadır. Düzenlilik yönteminin tüm olanaklarına karşın, duygusallık belirlemesini de bir yana bırakmıştır. 1890 Yeni tekniğini peyzajlara uygulaması, empresyonizmden kopmayı kesinlikle vurgulamıştır. 1892 Günlük yaşam sahneleri, pitoresk ve aniatı görünümünden çıkmış, daha çok yeni bir klasizm niteliğine bürünmüş ve düzenli kompozisyonlar halini almıştır. 1893 Sadeleştirme ve gerçeğe yönelik aktarma yöntemi kullanmıştır. 1896 Natürmortlar büyük kompozisyonların genişliğini ve dolgunluğunu içermektedir. Meyve ve eşyalara biçimsel bir kesinlik uygulanmıştır. 1897 Yapıtlarında dinsel kuşkunun etkisiyle huzursuz bir hava egemendir. 1898 Kuşku verici huzursuzluğa, doğal sadelikteki ağıtsal görüntüler de eklenmiştir. 1901 Peyzajla kendi arasında uyumlu bir yakınlık kurmuştur. Peyzaj doğrultusundaki her şeyi daha dengeli, daha duyarlı bir biçimde görmüş ve daha yumuşak bir biçimde yansıtmıştır. 1902 Gizlilik havası hiçbir zaman olmadığı kadar duyarlı ve insancıl bir biçimde sürmüştür. 1903 Ölüm yılı. Huzursuzluk, kararsızlık ve belirli ölçüde katılık hakimdir.

PAUL GAUGUIN París, 1848 - 1903 “Street in Rouen” 1884 Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Street in Rouen is one of the most ambitious — and largest —landscapes painted by Gauguin while living in this town in northeast France between January and November 1884. During this period, in which he ceased to be an amateur artist and began to devote himself fully to painting, Gauguin produced numerous landscapes and a few portraits and still-life pictures. Painted in an Impressionist style, with broken brushstrokes applied with very uniform touches, in which the influence of Cézanne and Pissarro is still apparent, it shows a solitary street in the outskirts of the town and not a purely country landscape as might seem at first sight. According to the recent catalogue raisonné by Daniel Wildenstein, the trees on the right of the composition could be identified as those of Rouen’s monumental cemetery (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.)
