Bridgeburners stealing the deck!

Picker could not pull her eyes from the man. He sat hunched over, on a chair that had yet to find a table, still clutching in his hands the small rag of tattered cloth on which something had been written. The alchemist had done all he could to return life to what had been a mostly destroyed, desiccated body, and Baruk's talents had been stretched to their limits - there was no doubt of that.
She knew of him, of course. They all did. They all knew, as well, where he had come from.
He spoke not a word. Had not since the resurrection. No physical flaw kept him from finding his voice, Baruk had insisted.
The Imperial Historian had fallen silent. No-one knew why.
(...)
"Sure," Spindle snapped, "a story to break our hearts all over again! What's the value in that?"
A rough, broken voice replied, "There is value."
Everyone fell silent, turned to Duiker.
The Imperial Historian had looked up, was studying them with dark eyes. "Value. Yes. I think, much value. But not yours, soldiers. Not yet. Too soon for you. Too soon."
"Perhaps," Baruk murmured, "perhaps you are right in that. We ask too much-"
"Of them. Yes." The old man looked down once more at the cloth in his hands.
The silence stretched.
Duiker made no move.
Picker began to turn back to her companions - when the man began speaking. "Very well, permit me, if you will, on this night. To break your hearts once more. This is the story of the Chain of Dogs. Of Coltaine of the Crow Clan, newly come Fist to the 7th Army..."

Speaking of tax stamps. I’m pretty fascinated by them, especially on lighters. The oldest pieces in my collection have European tax stamps, in fact.
Two from my collection of rope/wick lighters are particularly old. Both have French 1911 brass stamps. That makes them antiques at more than 100 years old, but I digress …
In France during that time period, all lighters exported had tax stamps applied. This particular stamp with “1911” was used until about 1916 when the style was changed to more of a dog bone shape. I have some of those, which I’ll share in a future post.
One of these lighters is a traditional rope lighter, also called a sailor lighter. Sometimes they are referred to as “trench lighters” or “foxhole lighters” but I don’t think those names are appropriate for this style. (We can debate that later.) The lighter works by striking the flint like normal but the spark starts the wick smoldering. There is no true flame.
The other one has the rope mechanism but also a fuel reservoir as shown in one of the photos. So it can be used to smolder or to produce a flame.
I have a decent collection of rope lighters acquired from a friend in The Netherlands who bought them as part of a collection. The previous owner lived in a fishing village and my storytelling brain likes to think he traded for them with sailors coming into port. I have no proof of this but it entertains me to consider.

Why Should You Choose a Tracked Cherry Picker for Tree Care
Tumblr media
The success of any tree surgery or pruning project depends heavily on your ability to reach the elevated work areas safely and quickly. Tree care can be particularly challenging when working on tall trees or those in densely populated urban areas. Conventional tree climbing equipment requires extensive training to operate correctly and can often leave you exhausted before you even reach the tree branches that need to be pruned. That's where tracked cherry pickers come in handy.
What Is A Tracked Cherry Picker?
A tracked cherry picker is an indispensable piece of equipment that can reach towering heights and navigate tight spaces easily and safely. It is compact, easily manoeuvrable, and features non-marking rubber tracks instead of wheels for improved stability. While some tree maintenance tasks can be accomplished using bucket trucks, they cannot deal with complications like narrow gates, uneven ground, etc. In such situations, you need a specialised lifting machine like a tracked cherry picker.
Reasons to Choose a Tracked Cherry Picker for Tree Care
Outstanding Reach
Some tracked cherry pickers can reach as high as 100 ft. These lifting machines' impressive reach allows arborists to access heights which would be challenging with traditional alternatives.
Narrow Access
Tracked platforms are beneficial for working on tall trees in tight spaces where other means of access may not work. These machines can easily fit through narrow spaces between tight structures to perform the required tree maintenance tasks.
Enhanced Stability
Tracked cherry pickers can be used for accessing trees located on the most challenging terrains, like steep banks, soft terrain, or uneven ground. Their tracked design guarantees the platform's stability, allowing arborists to navigate both delicate landscapes and uneven ground while maintaining complete control over the machine's position.
No Damage to Property
Tracked cherry pickers do not damage the property, unlike heavy trucks that can result in deep ruts when driven on wet yards. That's because they use non-marking rubber tracks instead of wheels. Besides that, they are also more lightweight in comparison to bucket trucks.
Improved Safety
Tracked lifting equipment allows arborists to work at significant heights without the risk of falls or injuries. These cherry pickers are a much safer choice than the traditional alternatives, particularly for removing decayed trees that are unsafe to climb. They facilitate the tree removal task without having the arborists climb the decayed trees.

Just more proof that the universe gives back when you do what it tells you to do, especially when you don't want to do it. Mom called earlier this afternoon asking me if I would take her and Dad out to visit with a couple of their close friends that they haven't seen since before Christmas. I really didn't want to but of course I said I would. On the way out I noticed a tote sitting along the road. Of course on the way back I had to stop and get it. Well, there turned out to be more than that. The bag on top has toys in it, the red tote is almost completely full of books, and the gray one is full of some really cool old looking stuff and a bunch of jewelry. The icing on the cake is that right on top there was a brand new Yankees hat! I can't wait till I can use one of these warmer days this week to spend a little time going through them.

Patriots’ Bill Belichick to Serve as ‘College GameDay’ Guest Picker for Army-Navy
ESPN announced that Patriots coach Bill Belichick will serve as the guest picker for College GameDay in Foxborough ahead of Army vs. Navy on Saturday. The Patriots play the Steelers on Thursday night, meaning Belichick will have off this weekend instead of preparing for a game. Belichick has a personal connection with the timeless rivalry game, as he grew up in Annapolis and his father both…
