The daughter of a man who died during a police standoff in Langley, B.C., this weekend has a lot of questions about the police response. Investigators are still on the scene at the 0 Avenue farm where 66-year-old Don Bennett died on Friday. The incident began when officers were called for a wellness check at about 4 p.m. Upon arrival, officers reported hearing gunshots and the Emergency Response Team was called out. About six hours later a barn caught fire and burned to the ground. Bennett is believed to have died in that fire, which also destroyed two police vehicles. Nicky McIntosh told Global News her father was having a mental health crisis and the arrival of heavily-armed police officers only escalated the situation.

Of Hate And Love: A PSA

Hey, everyone. Sorry for posting this in a place where you’re probably just looking to relax and escape from the horrors of the real world for a moment (as well as to those mutuals of mine whom I’ve spammed with this message already--I promise it’s me and it’s for real!), but in light of the events that occurred in Nashville earlier today and what little information we’ve gathered yet about event, the victims, and the shooter themselves, I feel it’s necessary that the following details and message be put out there for everyone to see, especially those who use this website on a daily basis. If you need to swipe this post out of your feed, block me for a while, or just not interact with me or this post more than you’re comfortable with, I totally get it. Just know that I still care about you and I wish you nothing but the best of safety, love, and success. Take care of each other and have a wonderful day. For those who don't know, there was a school shooting earlier today at a Presbyterian Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, one that left 3 kids and 3 adults dead before the shooter was themselves shot dead in a confrontation with police. From early reports from both law enforcement and the media, it appears the shooter was a 28-year-old trans girl named Audrey Hale who was found not only with two assault rifles and a handgun on her person, but also with detailed maps of the school and another in the same area, complete with notes about security measures, as well as a series of written manifestos in her room at the house where she was living with her parents. No motive as been determined as of yet, though police will continue to investigate--they've already determined she was a former student at the school.

I wanted to get this information out of there as a means of getting ahead of any possible misinformation/hate campaigns against the trans community, Christians, and/or the mentally ill as a result of this horrific attack (I bring up the last of which because the police did state it is an avenue among several they're currently exploring as a possible motive), as well as to remind everyone that labels are just that--arbitrary labels that serve no purpose other than to distract ourselves from what we all share in common, good and bad. Evil is evil no matter what demographic someone identifies with, and NOTHING can excuse a disgusting, selfish, and terrifying act like this. Please remember to keep standing up for what's right for everyone, including yourselves and the people you care about, and also to be mindful of your words and actions and how ALL PEOPLE around you are affected by them. You never know how you'll change people's lives for the better or worse by them, especially with over 8 billion of them on this planet to work with. So, please remember to be kind and brave with each other with the time and space you have.

It’s not at all surprising that cisfeminists try to push people out of conversations about reproductive care but it’s bizarre as fuck for trans people to do it. Like, I do not know how to express to you that this topic affects like 99% of trans (and adjacent) people.

Obviously (apparently not obvious to many of you) trans and not-cis or not-dyadic people who have or had (at least some of) the organs that allow you to carry a pregnancy are affected by it. It’s YOUR parts. Everyone who can get pregnant is affected. Everyone who could have an abortion is affected. Everyone who has to worry about birth control for THEIR specific own protection is affected. Everyone who has to get a pap smear is affected. It’s regulation about THAT healthcare, about THOSE parts, about accessing care for YOUR body.

Likewise, the ability and responsibility to bear children is placed on ALL women. Every woman who cannot, will not, or won’t become pregnant has their womanhood challenged. It doesn’t matter if it’s a physical impossibility (infertility AND choice to remove ability AND never having the ability to begin with) or a personal choice despite the ability—if you identify with womanhood, a large piece of the narrative is equating that role with baby-carrier. Which exists both in larger misogynistic society and as a point of pride among cisfeminists.

It’s a feminist issue for how we need to destroy the way society forces a role, it’s a feminist issue on the grounds of bodily autonomy. So just about everyone, regardless of AGAB, is affected in some way.

It does no good to forget (accidentally or intentionally) the trans people whose bodies are being policed in medicine, nor pretend those whose bodies are being policed by societal role are “being brought up for no reason.”

Of all the genders; trans man, trans woman, cis woman, and identities adjacent and between—none escape this scrutiny and it is a topic that affects all of us.

The only role that it affects less is ‘cis man,’ and even then only so far. Either cis man is an identity that one may not hold permanently in which case the previously cis man is brought into the above categories, OR it’s a role that should be brought into the conversation more because of personal responsibility to the above groups. If we are to actually shift sole responsibility for pregnancy from the one who can get pregnant to also encompass those who can get people pregnant (expanding birth control responsibility, financial and parental responsibility, etc) we have to recognize that no body or identity is absent from this conversation, even if one identity is a silent presence over it all.
