A parcel-gilt silver, rock crystal and enamel dish, Hermann Böhm, Vienna, circa 1880,

circular, formed of eight rock crystal panels engraved with classical foliage of griffins flanking a vase within scrollwork, around a circular panel in the centre, similarly decorated, within engraved silver-gilt frames, surrounded by applied brightly-enamelled openwork grotesque foliage, the each band decorated with a small emerald or a ruby, the rim applied with classical masks in high relief emerging from stylised shells enamelled in translucent scarlet, each flanking bow-shaped protruding openwork representing opaque white enamel masks within turquoise enamel cornucopiae abundant with flowers, plain silver-gilt spreading foot, maker's mark, pre-1922 Vienna control mark.

Herman(n), son of Emanuel and Josefina Böhm was born in Bukesbon, Hungary in 1842/3. On 22 August 1865, in Pucho, Hungary, he married Therese (“Rosi”) Politzer, daughter of the goldsmith J. Leopold Politzer and his wife Grendel. Shortly after the marriage, the families moved to Vienna and went into business first as Politzer & Böhm, later as Hermann Böhm. Both Therese, their son Max and Therese’s brother Joseph Politzer worked at various dates with the firm which appears to have remained in existence until at least 1922. Hermann died in Vienna in 1928 and Max the following year. The firm is recorded as employing between 10 and 12 workmen and specialised in creating mounted enamel and hardstone works of art in 'Antique-Imitation' for export. Hermann Böhm was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 Paris Exhibition Universelle.

Ciò che induce il rivoluzionario ad adottare il punto di vista del proletariato è anzitutto il fatto che questa classe è la sua, poi il fatto che è la classe oppressa, che è la classe di gran lunga più numerosa e la sua sorte, per conseguenza, tende a confondersi con quella dell'umanità, infine che le conseguenze della sua vittoria necessariamente comporteranno la soppressione delle classi. Lo scopo del rivoluzionario è quello di cambiare l'organizzazione della società. E per ottenerlo occorre senza dubbio distruggere il vecchio regime, ma questo non basterebbe: prima di tutto conviene costruire un ordine nuovo. Se per assurdo la classe privilegiata volesse concorrere alla costruzione socialista e si avessero prove manifeste della sua buona fede, non ci sarebbe alcuna ragione valida per respingerla. E se è assai improbabile che essa offra di buon grado il suo concorso ai socialisti, è perché la sua stessa situazione di classe privilegiata glielo impedisce, non certo per chissà quale demone interiore che la spingerebbe suo malgrado ad agire male. In tutti i casi, delle frazioni di questa classe, se se ne staccano, possono sempre essere aggregate alla classe oppressa e queste frazioni saranno giudicate dai loro atti, non dalla loro essenza. «Me ne infischio della vostra essenza eterna», mi diceva un giorno Politzer. Per il manicheista antisemita invece l'accento è posto sulla distruzione. Non si tratta di un conflitto di interessi, ma dei danni che una potenza malvagia causa alla società. Di conseguenza, il Bene consiste innanzitutto nel distruggere il Male. Sotto l'acredine dell'antisemita si nasconde l'ottimistica convinzione che l'armonia, una volta soppresso il Male, si ristabilirà da sola. Il suo compito è dunque esclusivamente negativo. Non si tratta di costruire una società, ma solamente di purificare quella che esiste. Per ottenere questo scopo, il concorso degli ebrei di buona volontà sarebbe inutile ed anzi nefasto e d'altra parte un ebreo non potrebbe essere di buona volontà. Cavaliere del Bene, l'antisemita è sacro, l'ebreo è pure lui sacro a suo modo: sacro come gli intoccabili, come gli indigeni colpiti da un tabù. Così la lotta viene condotta su un piano religioso e la fine del combattimento non può essere altro che una distruzione sacra. I vantaggi di questa posizione sono molteplici: per prima cosa, essa favorisce la pigrizia dello spirito. Abbiamo visto che l'antisemita non capisce niente della società moderna, sarebbe incapace di concepire un piano costruttivo; la sua azione non può collocarsi al livello della tecnica, ma si mantiene sul terreno della passione. Ad una impresa di largo respiro egli preferisce un'esplosione di rabbia analoga all'amok dei malesi. La sua attività intellettuale si rifugia nell'interpretazione: cerca negli avvenimenti storici il segno della presenza d'una potenza malvagia. Da ciò quelle invenzioni puerili e complicate che lo rendono simile ai grandi paranoici. Ma d'altra parte l'antisemitismo convoglia le spinte rivoluzionarie verso la distruzione di determinati uomini, non delle istituzioni; una folla antisemita crederà d'aver fatto abbastanza quando avrà massacrato alcuni ebrei e bruciato qualche sinagoga. Rappresenta dunque una valvola di sicurezza per le classi possidenti che incoraggiandolo sostituiscono ad un odio pericoloso contro il regime un odio benigno contro dei privati. “
