Zombies Run S3M24 Return to the Forbidden Forest
I ran this mission on July 23rd. Did a solid 5k on a beautiful day in DC. Also did a short run on July 25th but did not bring my phone with me so no ZR.
Will do another run tomorrow and looking forward to the next mission.
Spoilers after the pic below:
Tumblr media
This is an AI-generated image of two teens running around in a record store.
Finally! A mission without Amelia and Travis in it. Instead, I had to deal with teens. Still, I can't believe teenagers are into CDs these days. Maybe streaming completely stopped since the apocalypse started. I thought kids would at least be using iPods instead of CDs because, you know, more songs in one device.
I felt bad that Polly encountered her now undead parents. I completely understood the guilt she must have felt at that moment.
And then the teens said adults can be clueless. Did they mean Janine and Sam are gonna make out?
I'm still shipping them.

❤️ Meg
Jennifer Ellison: I have to include her because she's the reason I love Meg in the first place, and she's definitely among the things the movie got right. I will never not be frustrated that her mother caught her in the corridor leading to the Phantom's lair.
Hayley Driscoll: Cute as a button, beautiful, childlike singing voice, a cheery little doll with big expressive eyes and graceful movements. You wouldn't expect much from her but she's very much Christine's little guardian angel, standing up to the managers when suggesting Christine and as they dismiss her. She's a Meg I would have liked to see with Kelly Mathieson if I had a time machine, because when told to stay quiet you could tell she had a lot going on in her head. She understood the premise of Meg being a little detective throughout the show to a T.
Heidi Ann O'Brien: A great counterpart to Rachel Barrell's more discreet Christine, with a lovely warm singing voice. You have the implication that she may have encouraged the iron spine and will of steel Rachel's Christine shows later in the show. Heidi's Meg was sassy, mischievous, very protective of Christine, and she'd even openly mock people who were gratuitously mean towards her.
Emma Harris: A wonderfully detailed performance that complimented Gina Beck's very well. She's very much Madame Giry's daughter in the best way possible, the big sister to her Christine, with a will of steel, a take no nonsense attitude, and a good dose of common sense where she can tell right away in Angel of Music that there is something amiss and that it's nothing good. Probably the best voice for Meg the West End production has had, so I'm not surprised she's understudying Madame Giry nowadays.
Brianne Kelly Morgan: The perfect balance between the sassier and the softer interpretations of Meg (according to no other than Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne), she really told a story through every single one of her gestures and guided the audience throughout. Even then, she would still adjust her portrayal depending on who she was playing alongside as Meg - she was the little sister to Elizabeth Loyacano's more mature Christine, and the protective big sister to Kristi Holden's. And she has a voice on Christine's level, which makes it really a shame she never played the role of either Meg or even Christine on Broadway.
Layla Harrison: Gorgeous, great dancer, lovely voice, a lovely, thought out, detailed performance, and it's honestly a crime there aren't more videos of her as Meg, and an even bigger one she never made it to principal Meg.
Deanna Doyle: Cute as a kitten, lovely facial expressions, curious, just a little ball of charm who liked everyone and wanted to be friends with everyone. I may also be biased given she was one of the first Megs I've seen in a video that wasn't the 2004 movie or the 25th anniversary, so there's that.
Polly Baird: Her Meg isn't the most... expansive one, if that makes any sense - but she has a million dollar smile and she's a Meg where you feel there's a lot more going on underneath the surface as she slowly figures out what's going on with her friend. Basically the Sonya Rostova of Megs, and I mean this in the best way possible.
Eleanor Waite: ADORABLE. You would have wanted to pinch her cheeks. Her childlike portrayal worked very well with Kristi Holden's dreamy Christine, but she still had depths, intelligence and courage you would not have expected from her.
Georgia Ware: I say Olivia Safe is the Dora Brunlow of Christines, meanwhile Georgia is the Dora Brunlow of Megs. Another one of the kitten!Megs, with a sweetness paired with a nice dose of mischief. She felt like she was more of a little sister to both Kelly Mathieson and Amy Manford's Christines, but she would always encourage them to get out of their shells and was very supportive no matter what.
Imogen-Lily Ash: She had a very special but graceful way of moving that made her look like a cross between a ballerina and a kitten, and that made her really linger on my mind after seeing the Copenhagen revival video (and mind you, it has the best cast overall I've seen in a POTO video). Like Sybille Glosted, she was very responsive to her surroudings and happenings, never had a moment where she went blank, with maybe a hint of nervousness that makes her descending into the Phantom's Lair all the more poignant.
Sara Esty: Listen, she was ready to throw hands with the so-called Angel in Angel of Music already. The Phantom is lucky to have made it out before she arrived because there would have been a fight. A determined little knight in shining armor, and I really liked her with Meghan Picerno's Christine, because they were one of those Christine/Meg pairings where they really felt like real friends.
Fernanda Muniz: Listen, I saw a picture of her with those freckles, and I was REALLY hoping she wouldn't disappoint as Meg, given the cast for the Sao Paulo revival could be a little hit and miss. She was definitely a "hit". A VERY cheery little Meg, who would spontaneously laugh at certain moments and it felt genuine every time.
I haven't seen Kelly Loughran or Erica Wong yet, but I'm really eager to because I've only heard good things about them.
Send me ❤️ and a role in a musical and I’ll give you my favorite performers in the role.

Oh Harry giving away your book to the flight attendant is bad form
Oh, Harry, giving away your book to the flight attendant is bad form Polly Vernon The Sunday Times. https://ift.tt/VqgkrYU take on Harold's gift of Spare to the AA Air Steward. A few snippets:is it good form to foist your memoir on another, completely unasked? Sure, Mr Pattern seems happy with this legacy of a man he referred to as his “passenger prince”, but I’d say it’s a presumption. \***To inflict your LGBTQIA+ YA novel, your work of historical non-fiction, your thriller on someone else is really quite gross (not least because they’re going to have to pretend they read it, then think up something nice to say about it). \***Giving it away? In the guise of a “thank you”? As if you’re sure the contents of those pages alone will reward the giftee for some service? I don’t think it’s Done. \***did Harry gift Spare in the hope that Pattern would post — which, of course, he would — and we’d all know he hadn’t taken a PJ (private jet) to California? My final thought was: OMG! “HOLDEN PATTERN”! I get it! Submitted June 13, 2023 at 12:40PM by Von_und_zu_ https://ift.tt/B8X3M27 via /r/SaintMeghanMarkle

"ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) Review
Tumblr media
"ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) Review Years ago, I used to watch a great deal of old movies on late night television. My two favorite channels that offered these movies were Turner Network Television (TNT) and the American Movies Classic (AMC), which used to air movies without any commercial breaks. On TNT, I had stumbled across a Western movie originally released by MGM Studios in 1953 called "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) and fell in love with it. After watching my recently purchased DVD copy of the movie, I could see why it became a favorite of mine.
Directed by John Sturges during the first decade of his directorial career, "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" told the story of a Union Army officer that served as the second-in-command of a prisoner-of-war camp located in the Arizona Territory in 1863. The movie’s opening pretty much set the stage of what kind of character Captain Roper was, as it depicted him dragging an escaped Confederate prisoner back to Fort Bravo. The fact that Roper was on horseback and his prisoner – a Lieutenant Bailey – was on foot pretty much established the Union officer as a hard-nosed and ruthless man. That flint-like personality was exacerbated by his cynicism, revealed in his reactions to the other characters’ disapproval of his treatment of Bailey. However, chaos soon arrived in the form of one Carla Forrester, a Texas belle who arrived at Fort Bravo to serve as maid-of-honor at the wedding of Alice Owens, the daughter of Fort Bravo’s commanding officer, Colonel Owens. Carla was also there to ensure the escape of the prisoners’ ranking officer, her fiancé Captain John Marsh and a few of his men. In order to keep their Union jailers distracted, Carla set out to seduce and romance the fort’s most feared man – Captain Roper. When I first saw "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO", I never thought I would become such a diehard fan of the movie. Do not get me wrong. It was not the best or innovative Western I had ever seen. Screenwriters Frank Fenton and an unaccredited Michael Pate had created a solid character study about conflicts – both political and personal – between the Union and Confederate troops in the Civil War Southwest, and the conflict between the Apaches and everyone else. The movie even had a happy ending – somewhat. Yet, Sturges, Fenton and Pate managed to lift a solid tale into something more fascinating by infusing a great deal of emotion and complexity in the main characters And it were these complex characters that truly made "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" for me. The characters seemed to seethe with an array of emotions that eventually burst forth as the movie unfolded. Many of these emotions seemed to center around the story’s main character. One of those characters happened to be Carla Forrester. And Eleanor Parker managed to do a top-notch job in portraying the bundle of contradictions that simmered underneath her ladylike façade. Parker portrayed Carla as a cool Southern belle with impeccable manners and a talent for seduction. Her Carla also possessed the ruthlessness to browbeat a reluctant pro-Southern storekeeper into helping Marsh and his men escape; a boldness that allowed her to chase after Roper in an age where women were valued for being passive; and a great deal of passion for Marsh and later, Roper. One of the more interesting aspects of Parker’s performance was expessing Carla’s struggles to suppress her feelings for Roper. Recently, I learned that Parker had earned the nickname Woman of a Thousand Faces. Judging from her portrayal of Carla Forrester, I would say that she deserved the name. I have been a fan of John Forsythe since his years as Charlie Townsend’s voice in "CHARLIE’S ANGELS" (1976-1981) and his work on the ABC nighttime soap opera "DYNASTY" (1981-1989). But I must admit that I found his performance in "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" somewhat perplexing. On one hand, Forsythe did a excellent job in portraying John Marsh’s patience, intelligence and slightly caustic nature - especially in scenes that featured Marsh's exchanges with his fellow Confederate prisoners. However, there seemed to be something not quite . . . right about the character. I do not know if the fault lay with Forsythe’s performance or Fenton and Pate’s screenplay. The problem with the Marsh character or Forsythe’s acting seemed to be Marsh’s successful ability to suppress his emotions. There were times when I wondered if the only true feelings that Marsh seemed able to truly express, centered around his desire to escape. And when he finally did express his his jealousy toward Carla’s feelings about Roper – it came off as slightly unconvincing. Either Forsythe had failed to sell it . . . or Fenton and Pate failed to allow Marsh to express his jealousy until it was too late in the story. I certainly cannot accuse William Demarest and William Campbell for giving unconvincing performances. The pair portrayed two of the Confederate prisoners – the wise "old" man Sergeant Campbell and the cocky young Cabot Young. The pair seemed to be engaged in some kind of verbal warfare that I found a lot of fun. Yet, it also seemed to hint some kind of mild dislike between the two – until the ending revealed their true feelings for each other. Two other performances caught my attention – John Lupo as the cowardly Confederate officer Lieutenant Bailey and Richard Anderson (of "THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN" and "THE BIONIC WOMAN" fame) as the soon-to-be husband of Alice Owen, Lieutenant Beecher. What made these two characters interesting was that each man – in his own way – seemed capable of some kind of courage. Although a physical coward, Bailey possessed the courage to openly admit his limitations. And Beecher had no qualms about openly expressing his disapproval of Roper’s ruthlessness, despite being the captain’s subordinate. While writing this review, it occurred to me that I had yet to comment on William Holden’s performance as the hard-nosed Captain Roper. The same year (1953) that MGM released "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO", Paramount released Billy Wilder’s movie, "STALAG 17" - the movie that featured Holden’s Oscar winning performance. If I had my way, I would have given Holden the Oscar for his performances in both movies. What I found amazing about his portrayal of Roper is that in the hands of a lesser actor, the character could have easily ended up one-dimensional. Ironically, most of the supporting characters seemed to view him as a one-dimensional hard ass. Yet, Holden managed to effectively convey Roper’s complexity by perfectly balancing the character’s ruthlessness with an intelligent, witty and passionate man. In the end, he actor did a superb job in combining the many aspects of Roper’s personality into a complex and interesting character. MGM’s Oscar winning costume designer Helen Rose added color to the movie with some lush costumes befitting the movie’s early 1860s setting. Unfortunately, Rose made one serious misstep with a yellow evening gown worn by Eleanor Parker:
Tumblr media
The gown seemed more befitting of a movie set in the early 1950s, instead of the 1860s. It is not surprising that Rose had received her Oscar nominations and wins for movies in a modern setting. I also have to commend cinematographer Robert Surtees for capturing the Southwest landscape (Southern California and New Mexico) without overwhelming the performers. Surtees also made use of the Ansco cameras to give the movie a rich and lush aura, allowing the desert to seem more colorful than usual. Surprisingly, Frank Fenton and Michael Pate’s script for "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" seemed to bear a small, yet striking resemblance to John Ford’s 1939 classic, "STAGECOACH". Both movies are basically character studies of a group of people in a Western setting – namely the Southwest – that included action against the Apaches in the final acts. And the Apaches in both films proved to be nothing more than plot devices to drive the characters’ situations forward. However, Sturges and the two screenwriters gave the Apaches’ roles a twist by portraying them as an organized military unit, instead of a bunch of rampaging "savages", during a sequence that featured Roper, Carla, Beecher, Marsh, Bailey, Campbell and Young under besiege by the Apaches’ "bombardment" of arrow similar to Henry V’s use of English and Welsh longbowmen at the Battle of Agincourt. And unlike the John Wayne and Claire Trevor characters in "STAGECOACH", this movie left the fate of Roper and Carla’s future romance in the air. After all, she had assisted in the Confederates’ escape. It is a shame that "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" has never been considered when top Hollywood Westers are discussed. Or even when John Sturges’ career is discussed. Frankly, I believe the movie deserves to be considered. Sturges had taken Frank Fenton and Michael Pate’s sharp screenplay and a top notch cast to create a tense and complex Western that I feel is one of the best I have seen to come out of the Hollywood studio era.

Which character in one of your ROs might be romantically interested in one of the charas from other WIPs?
Sorry I didn't answer this for a while!!!
Hannie:
Polly of @hollowmoonvalley - they're a sucker for a cutie pie. Polly is so sweet it's hard not to fall for them, I'll be honest.
B Holden of @milaswriting - Loyalty is one of the most important things in a relationship for them, and they value someone who is kind and open with them.
Bishop of @afterhoursgame - They're a sucker for himbos. They ABSOLUTELY are moronsexual. A guy who's dumb as hell is their kryptonite.
Anastasia of @alencar-mission-failed-if - Not only was that the name of their favorite disney movie, but also because they can relate to the type of work ethic she has and how serious she can be. Unlike Oli, who likes having partners who's personality is the opposite of theirs, Hannie does lean towards people who are similar to them, because they feel seen and they feel like someone understands.
Oli:
Melchior of @idrellegames - they're not going to pretend they've never been a theatre kid, and they like meshing and balancing out their personality with others. A person who is outgoing and extra at all times is right up their alley, I'll be honest.
Kei Trevor of @smellsblood-if - tall, confident, rich, sexy? Check check check check. They've got a crush bigger than the eiffel tower.
Cade Rivas of @blackwood-if - Oli's gone through a twilight phase, OF COURSE they love bad boys. I mean, they weren't a diehard fan of One Direction and they haven't read all those mafia bad boy fics for nothing. THEY. LOVE. BADBOYS.
Key Sylvester of @hydeout - Another semi bad boy. He's outgoing, kind, and everythng Oli could want in a man. And he ABSOLUTELY has a great fashion sense!!
N:
Eli of @unmourned - they also feel deeply about many things and they would like someone who validated their feelings as well.
Hawthorne of @spiltmilk-if - honestly, they would like to go after someone that snarky and sarcastic. They have a soft spot for the dark and brooding type.
Cyrus of @larkin-if - In the words of N, 'Has tattoos and is a doctor? Seriously, open a clinic with me.'
The Dreamwalker of @attollogame - let's be honest. Who doesn't have a crush on him? Also, I think N would like to come up with more and more elaborate nicknames for him and would ask them if they were okay with creating ridiculous rumors about them (Like 'I'm the Dreamwalker's partner. Can you believe he yodels in his sleep? That's not super dreamy, I'll admit.'

The Lost Silhouette | Part One | Thomas Shelby
Summary: After Grace’s death, Tommy had closed his heart off but when he marries the new female detective of the Crime Investigation Department of Birmingham only for protection from the law, his cold exterior starts melting.
Thomas Shelby x reader
Warnings: Mentions of murder and violence. Brief mentions of sadness and depression.
A/N: Charlie is 1 and a half years old in this story. Grace died when he was just a couple of months old. The reader’s job in this is not entirely historically accurate. But I hope you enjoy.
________________________________
Dull blue eyes stare up at the ceiling as pink lips wrap around the white roll of paper. The air is heavy as it has been for the last eighteen months. There isn’t a hint of happiness in this dreadful residence. The only thing that keeps the house from seeming haunted is the rare laughs of the little toddler that Thomas’ lover had left him, before she was shot right in front of his steel blue eyes.
The blue eyes that used to shine so bright once. The blue eyes that used to light up. The blue eyes that dreamed so big. Now those same blue eyes have lost all their light. They hold no emotions. No happiness. No love. Only a little bit of affection for Charlie.
Tommy lost all his ambitions and the only reason why he keeps going on is for his beloved son, who he loves the most in this world. Everything Tommy does is only for the good of his dear son. So when he married Y/N, he told himself he wasn’t betraying Grace, he was doing it for Charlie and for his family. Charlie was only just a few months old and he needed a mother-figure in his life and to Tommy a nanny did not count as a mother-figure.
Y/N was a girl from a noble family, who had a pretty prestigious job. A job that no other woman seemed to have at the time. A detective. When she first met Tommy, she had just been transferred to Birmingham from London. Around that time, the Peaky Blinders were having a lot of issues with the law. The cops made their lives a living hell. He did what he thought was right, he went to Y/N’s superior and asked her hand in marriage. Y/N’s superior was the superintendent, Christopher Holden, who was transferred to Birmingham alongside her. He was a father-figure to her, as her father died in the great war.
Christopher was absolutely appalled by the idea. He wasn’t going to let someone like Tommy marry one of the best officers in the unit. He wasn’t her biological father, but he loved her like she were his own blood and flesh. So. Tommy made a deal that he’ll help them keep all the gangs in Birmingham on a leash if he got to marry Y/N. He knew if he married her, someone with such a big reputation in the police department, no one would be able to even lay a finger on his family and the rest of the Peaky Blinders.
Christopher agreed to the deal only if Y/N did.
Y/N is an independent woman with a job that she absolutely loves. She earns her own money and has saved up enough money that she could buy the city of Birmingham if she wanted to. She didn’t need a man. She was almost twenty-seven but unmarried, which was strange to everyone. She was beautiful, head-strong, classy, smart and rich. Everything a man would want yet she never married. The reasons were unknown.
But she never imagined herself to be in an arranged marriage. Especially, with someone who is always in trouble with the law. She would’ve never agreed to it if it weren’t for Christopher. He put out all the benefits this marriage would bring to the department but he never forced her. But she was smart enough, so she agreed to marry Thomas Shelby.
Tommy’s family was pretty skeptical about Tommy’s decision to marry a cop. But as Polly says, “Tommy knows best.” When he told everyone about the marriage, everyone was...somewhat cooperative.
“She’s a cop?” John scrunched his face in disapproval.
“Yes,” Arthur confirmed. “She’s too pretty for such a disgraceful job.”
Polly wasn’t sure of what Y/N was going to be like. She never approved of Grace but knew how much she meant to her nephew. She knew that Tommy had no liking or feelings towards the detective, but she still held out the hope that he would be happy one day.
Surprisingly, everyone adored Y/N. Her quick-wit, knowledge, and kindness managed to charm the Shelby’s. They were more than thrilled to welcome her into the family.
Tommy didn’t care about that at all. He never knew what she was like and he couldn’t care less. They only had exchanged a few words before they got married. They never even had a proper conversation. She didn’t care either, she was doing it for the good of the city. She only cared about that and Charlie, who she instantly fell in love with when she first met him. The little boy adored her as well, which was a huge relief to his father.
The wedding was a beautiful yet gloomy one. The wedding took place on the edge of a beautiful cliff. The guests were just the Peaky Blinders and some of Y/N’s closest friends.
The altar was decorated with all kinds of flowers. It was the only thing that made Y/N happy.
Tommy didn’t even kiss her on the lips. He just offered her a small peck on the cheek.
The feeling of his lips lingering on her cheek is a feeling that Y/N still remembers every time he walks into her bedroom with Charlie in his arms and a cigarette hanging from his lips. He always stands by the edge of her bed and briefly mentions some business that he needs her help with. He then lets Charlie kiss her goodnight, before he disappears back in his bedroom with the little boy. And that’s the only amount of interaction Y/N has with Tommy, everyday.
However, Y/N feels a little more courageous today.
She smooths out her blazer, while looking in the mirror for the last time. The light of the early sun makes her navy blue pant-suit a little more bright than it is. Her hair shines underneath the rays of the sun. She walks out of her bedroom door with her suitcase in her hand. Instead of walking downstairs, she takes a turn and walks into her husband’s bedroom. Something, she never does.
The open door of his bedroom is very unusual, so she peaks her head through the door and sees Tommy rummaging through his drawers, getting ready for work as well. She clears her throat to grab his attention. He turns his head slightly and catches a glimpse of the woman. He raises his eyebrows, expressing his surprise.
“Yeah?” He grumbles.
“Was heading to work, so I thought I’d say goodbye before I leave.” She explains. In the six months of their marriage, this has never happened before.
Tommy eyes her up and down, taking in the sight. He has seen her in a suit maybe twice, because the only time he ever sees her is when they both get home from work and get settled in their home attires.
“All right,” He nods at her. “G’bye”
Y/N bites the inside of her cheek as she nods back at him. Before she heads out, she goes to kiss Charlie as she always does.
On her way out of the home, a wave of sadness washes over her. She realises that her silly heart has fallen for her husband who she had no relationship with. Other than legal papers binding them together, they were not even acquaintances.
She had not fallen for anyone after she lost the only man she ever loved, to the war. James. Major James Voight was a gallant man who fought alongside Y/N’s father in the great war in France. She lost both of them. She never wanted to love again. She was too afraid to lose someone again.
Tommy didn’t know about this. He didn’t know that she lost her fiance to the war. He never knew how troubled she was, deep down inside.
Now that she has fallen in love so foolishly, she tells her feelings to shut down like a machine. She has functioned herself to be a machine, to never feel again. But the machine she made, seems to not work anymore. The fear courses through her veins, because she knows...she knows that as her heart beats in her chest, it now only beats for Thomas Shelby.

Slytherin Students List
If you’re writing a fic and need Slytherin names for a certain year feel free to use this list.
Note: This list was created for my Slytherin! Harry fanfiction, The Snake Inside. This is a list of all the Slytherin students throughout the 7 years that Harry is at Hogwarts. I stole some names from the wiki and the rest were generated with a Victorian name generator. I aged down a couple characters that were listed on the wiki to have extra characters, and gave some background canon characters siblings. There should be at least 10 students in each year. I also designated who in my story is Head Girl/Boy or a Prefect, but if you’re just borrowing some names you don’t have to keep that part.

Andy Hardy’s Leading Ladies by Jessica Pickens
Tumblr media
Stardom is a strange and mythical thing. In the early days of Hollywood, scouts found new talent anywhere from dance schools to the Olympic games. Today, a teen uploading a video to YouTube could become famous enough to land a record deal or a starring role in a television show. In the 1930s and 1940s, stardom could be found through the Andy Hardy film series, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The films were made on a low budget but yielded top profit.
The 16-film series spanned from 1937 to 1958. Each focused on the life of the Hardy family but particularly of the antics of their teenage son, Andy Hardy, played by Mickey Rooney. The father and head of the household was stalwart Judge James Hardy, played by Lewis Stone, who offered life advice to his son. The family was rounded out by Mrs. Emily Hardy (Fay Holden), their daughter Marian (Cecilia Parker) and Aunt Milly (Sara Haden).
Though Andy was generally the center of the stories, the women in his life were often essential to the plot. Because of this, these roles offered a great testing ground for new starlets.
Tumblr media
“MGM used the Andy Hardy series as a popularity meter to gauge public reaction to its most promising young actresses, and it was considered a plum to be cast in one,” actress and swimmer Esther Williams wrote in her autobiography, The Million Dollar Mermaid. “If audiences liked you, you went on to bigger and better films. Lana Turner and Judy Garland started that way. So did Kathryn Grayson and Donna Reed.”
In each film, Andy may be smitten with the new star appearing with him in the film, but he would usually return to his girlfriend, Polly Benedict played by Ann Rutherford. Some of Hollywood’s top female stars got their start in the films. Here are a few actresses whose careers benefited from an early role in the series:
Tumblr media
Judy Garland Today with her legendary status, it’s hard to imagine Judy Garland as anything but a star. But in 1938, she was still rising at MGM. Garland played the recurring character of Betsy Booth in three Andy Hardy films: LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY (’38), ANDY HARDY MEETS DEBUTANTE (’40) and LIFE BEGINS FOR ANDY HARDY (’41). The character of Betsy is the granddaughter of the Hardy’s next door neighbor. Betsy is younger than Andy and has a crush on him, but Andy never takes Betsy seriously. LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY (’38) was the first of eight films that Garland and Rooney co-starred in together. Before the Andy Hardy films, Garland co-starred with adult actors in other MGM musicals, but the pairing of the two young actors helped boost both of their careers. The year following her first Andy Hardy film, Garland went on to star with Rooney in another film, BABES IN ARMS (’39), and her best-known film, THE WIZARD OF OZ (’39).
Tumblr media
Kathryn Grayson Opera singer and actress Kathryn Grayson became one of MGM’s top stars—performing in Technicolor musicals like SHOW BOAT (’51) and KISS ME KATE (’53). But her first film was ANDY HARDY’S PRIVATE SECRETARY (’41), the 10th film in the Andy Hardy series. MGM studio head Louis B. Mayer heard Grayson sing and signed her to a contract without a screen test, according to an article in a July 1, 1944 issue of The State, a monthly North Carolina-focused magazine. In the film, right before graduating from high school, Andy decides to hire a private secretary, Kathryn Land, played by Grayson. Andy does this to help out Kathryn’s family, who is poor, and Judge Hardy helps her father find a better job. Though Andy Hardy films aren’t considered musicals, Grayson performs three songs in her film debut. Following the Andy Hardy film, Grayson starred in top MGM musical projects like SEVEN SWEETHEARTS (’42) and ANCHORS AWEIGH (’45).
Tumblr media
Donna Reed Donna Reed signed with MGM in 1941 and played a supporting role in another popular series, SHADOW OF THE THIN MAN (’41). Following this, she co-starred in the 12th Andy Hardy film, THE COURTSHIP OF ANDY HARDY (’42). In the film, Reed plays shy Melodie Nesbit, a teenager who is in the middle of a custody battle with her divorcing parents. Melodie isn’t as pretty or spunky as the girls Andy likes to date, but he invites her to a dance and befriends her at his father’s request. Reed’s star at MGM didn’t burn as brightly as some of her contemporaries, but she went on to star in one of the most well-known films of all-time, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE (’46), and star in her own television show, The Donna Reed Show, from 1958 to 1966.
Tumblr media
Lana Turner Her role was brief and ends with murder, but audiences didn’t forget Lana Turner when she walked down the street in a tight sweater in THEY WON’T FORGET (’37). After a few small roles, her next larger role came in LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY (’38). Costarring with Judy Garland in the fourth Andy Hardy film, Turner portrays Cynthia, the girlfriend of Andy’s friend Beezy. LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY follows the Hardy family during the Christmas season, which is less than merry. Andy’s girlfriend Polly is out of town visiting her grandmother, so she can’t go to the Christmas dance with Andy. Betsy Booth (Judy Garland) is in town visiting her grandmother who lives next door to the Hardy family, and Beezy wants Andy to date Cynthia while he’s out of town for the holidays. All of the plans change when Polly comes home early, Beezy breaks up with Cynthia and Andy’s grandmother becomes gravely ill. LOVE FINDS ANDY HARDY was Turner’s first role with MGM after signing with the studio. By 1939, Turner became a star with her first top billing role in THESE GLAMOUR GIRLS.
Tumblr media
Esther Williams The swimming actress didn’t start out planning to be an actress. Williams was a champion swimmer who was assured a spot on the United States swimming team for the 1940 Summer Olympics. However, the games were canceled due to the outbreak of World War II. Williams said stardom was her consolation prize. Forced to reinvent herself, Williams swam with an Aquacade and was discovered by MGM. She signed a contract with the studio in 1942, and her first film was ANDY HARDY’S DOUBLE LIFE (’42), the 13th film in the series. Williams played Shelia, a friend of Andy’s girlfriend Polly Benedict. In the film, Andy promises to only dedicate himself to Polly but is sidetracked by Shelia. Williams even has the opportunity to swim in the film, which caught everyone’s attention. She languidly swims through the water and kisses Andy, causing him to mouth “Woo woo!” at the camera. Two years later, Williams made a splash with her first starring role in BATHING BEAUTY (’44).
