Trick or Treat
Tumblr media
A/N: It feels so great to post again. I've been in a writing slump for several weeks now, so I wanted to write something short and sweet to get the writing juices flowing. Thank you @hollyethecurious for your ideas for the premise and @darkcolinodonorgasm for Killian’s costume!
Rated: Teen and up for mature language
“Well, that’s disturbing.” Emma grimaces at the zombie gnome with gnarly teeth, reaching out with dirt and blood covered hands like he's coming out of the ground to get them. Even though it's not real, the graphics are enough to give a kid nightmares.
 “That’s so cool, Mommy!”
Well, any kid who’s not her seven-year-old son that is. Henry runs down the sidewalk, his oversized hat falling off his head. He’s a ball of energy most days, but tonight, he’s extra energetic, and he hasn’t even had any candy yet.
“Kid, your hat!” She follows after him, picking up his hat from the winding walkway which is lined with jack-o'-lanterns on each side. But as she passes each one, she’s surprised when she realizes these aren’t just typical jack-o'-lanterns with a mouth, nose and eyes carved into them. No, these are intricately crafted jack-o'-lanterns. One is carved into a haunted house, one is a graveyard full of ghosts, another looks like a skull from afar, but up close, it appears to be carved into long stem mushrooms and grass. Her favorite is the pumpkin carving that mimics a scene from the Nightmare Before Christmas.
Like seriously, who has time to carve out all these pumpkins? And why weren’t the Jack-o'-lanterns on display as she had seen at the Night of 1,000 Jack-o'-lanterns at the Chicago Botanic Garden? Whoever carved these has some ridiculous artistic talent. They are also way too into Halloween, because their yard is all decked out. There are games set up on tables in the yard, skeletons and ghosts hanging from the trees and tombstone yard signs all over.
As she walks up the steps to the house, fake fog sweeps around her feet, the porch is covered in fake cobwebs with large spiders and the porch railing is lined with decorated jars, “potions”, skulls and other Halloween themed knickknacks. She laughs at the potion bottle labeled, “love potion.” When she reaches the door, which is wide open, a group of kids in cute costumes gathered around waiting for treats, she’s expecting the three looney witches from Hocus Pocus to emerge from the house.
When a man in a black top hat, tailcoat and a cane appears through the door with a bowl full of candy, she realizes how wrong she is.
 Boy, is she wrong.
Holy shit, he’s gorgeous. His skin looks ghostly white from the makeup on his face and he's wearing a brown curly mustache, but those vivid blue eyes are so very blue, even in the dark and under the hat he’s wearing. She’s afraid those eyes will set her on fire when he looks at her.
“Trick or treat!” the children chorus.
Emma can’t take her eyes off the man as he excitedly hands out candy.
“I love your costume, lassie,” he compliments a little girl who's wearing an Elsa costume.
He has an accent? Holy hell.
The little girl frowns, clearly not understanding what he meant by lassie. “I’m not a dog, I’m Elsa.”
He chuckles, dropping a candy bar into her pumpkin bucket. “My apologies, Elsa. Please don’t blast me with ice.”
“Thank you, mister,” she says cheerfully before scurrying down the steps to meet her parents at the end of the walkway.
 “Trick or treat!”
The man looks toward the small voice, seeing Henry approaching him. He grins big and wide, which makes him look much creepier than he already looks in his costume. Creepy, but sexy. “Well, hi there. Captain Hook, I presume?”
Henry nods his head and opens his Halloween sack, using his plastic hook to hold one of the straps.
“Very nice costume, lad. My favorite one so far.”
“Thank you. I made it,” Emma boasts with a smile as she steps behind her son, placing the hat on his head. She’s not normally one to brag, but then again bragging doesn’t normally afford her the opportunity to talk to ridiculously handsome strangers.
The man looks up, and when his eyes finally connect with hers, he completely steals her breath. She was wrong. His smoldering blue eyes don’t set her on fire, but they do make her melt.
And his heavy stare makes her skin tingle.
 “You made this lovely costume?”
She waves her hand nonchalantly. “It was easy. Just took a red, long-sleeved shirt, some ribbon and slapped some red felt and white feathers on a straw hat and voila.”
“Very impressive, lass.” He glances at her shirt briefly before returning his eyes to hers. “Did you also make your costume?” he asks, his eyes dancing with mirth. He must have been referring to her red leather jacket and white t-shirt that reads, “This IS my Halloween costume.”
Emma laughs. “No, I bought it on Amazon.”
“Wow, Mom, check this out! Full-size candy bars!” Henry shouts excitedly when the stranger deposits the candy bar into his sack.
Emma tears her eyes from this man’s mesmerizing blue ones to see the full-size Snickers bar Henry’s holding out to show her. “Huh, people actually do give out full-size candy bars.” She looks up at the man. “I’m impressed. Let me guess, you also carved those pumpkins, too?” she asks, pointing to the pumpkins in his yard.
He nods with a small smile. “I did. You’d be amazed by what I can do with these hands,” he says smugly.
Emma wants to roll her eyes, but she can’t deny she very much wishes to find out exactly what he can do with those hands. Instead, she flashes a sarcastic smirk. “So who are you supposed to be, Jack the Ripper?”
He chuckles. “Not quite. I’m a gentleman from the Victorian Era. A devilishly handsome gentleman, may I add.”
She cocks a brow, laughter bubbling in her throat. “If by a  devilishly handsome gentleman, you mean creepy.”
He sets down the candy bowl and surprises her when he takes her hand in his and lowers his head, murmuring softly as he looks up at her. “The name’s Killian Jones. And it just so happens, I’m always a gentleman. Not just on Halloween.” His touch sears her skin, then he presses his lips to the back of her hand and it feels like electrical currents are surging through her. Her breath catches, and she’s worried he will notice. Judging by the smirk spreading across her skin, he definitely noticed.
Emma turns her head, looking for her son, whom she spots in the yard playing games with the other kids, their parents supervising them. “I should get back to my son.”
This man actually pouts as he releases her hand. And it’s freaking adorable. “I told you my name and yet you haven't told me yours?”
She bites her bottom lip, contemplating whether she should or not. But then again, what’s the harm? It is a small town, so they’ll probably end up running into each other again at some point. “It’s Emma.”
He grins, making her heart melt. “Nice to meet you, Emma.”
 “Likewise.”
He scratches behind his ear, which makes him look less creepy and even more adorable. “I’ve never seen you before. Are you new in town?”
 “I’m from Chicago.”
 “Well, love, welcome to Storybrooke.”
Oh. Now he’s calling her love? Can this man get any sexier? Jesus Christ. “Thank you.” She gives him a shy smile and turns to head down the steps.
“Wait. Before you go, I have a treat for you, too.”
She spins around, arching her brow. “Oh, that’s okay. Henry will share some of his candy with me.”
He chuckles and shakes his head. “This treat is not for kids.”
Emma gulps. “What kind of treat did you have in mind?” Something salty? Her mind definitely did not go into the gutter there. Okay, it totally did.
He heads inside, then returns not a moment later with a caramel apple.
“A caramel apple?” She almost sounds disappointed. But she’s definitely not.
“Aye, but not just any caramel apple. It’s an adult caramel apple. So make sure you don’t share this with your lad.”
She eyes it suspiciously. “It’s not laced with love potion, is it?”
He chuckles and leans closer, whispering in her ear. “No. But it is laced with cannabis-infused butter.”
Emma smirks as she takes the caramel apple. “Wow, you really go all out on Halloween, don’t you?”
He shrugs. “You should come back around Christmas.”
“Oh God, you’re not one of those people who goes completely crazy with the Christmas lights and the decorations and Santa and his reindeer on the roof, are you?”
He shrugs again, donning a smirk. “Guess you’ll have to wait and find out.”
“Is that an invitation?” Because she's definitely not thinking about inviting him to get high and engage in hot, sweaty sex with her. Not at all.
“Perhaps. Do you and your son enjoy hot cocoa and watching Christmas movies in front of a cozy fireplace?”
She eyes the caramel apple and then glances up at him. “Does Santa enjoy adult cookies with his milk?”
His grin widens, making her heartbeat skyrocket out of her chest. “Aye, then it’s a date.”
Emma rolls her eyes, a smile tugging at her lips. “Not a date.” She doesn’t like the idea of waiting until Christmas to see him again, though.
His face clouds with guilt. Sorry, love, I just didn't see a wedding ring on your finger so I assumed-”
“I'm not married,” she clarifies, her cheeks flushing because of the fact that he was curious enough to check her hand for a ring. “Nor do I have a boyfriend. I'm single.” Very single. She's never been so glad to be single before.
He sighs in relief, which gives her the courage to say what's on her mind and to thankfully change the subject.
“You know, adult cookies aren’t just for Christmas...”
He cocks his brow, and good Lord, she really needs him to stop doing that, because it’s doing things to her breathing and her heart. “No? What other special occasions are they for?”
She shrugs. “Like a Saturday night, say next week when my parents are taking Henry for the weekend.”
His eyes flash with something she can only describe as excitement. Or anticipation, maybe? “But still not a date, right?”
She shakes her head. “Nope, just two adults enjoying their adult cookies.”
He laughs. “Okay, I’ll bring the apple cider.”
“Sounds like a date,” she says accidentally when she had meant to say Sounds like a plan. But she doesn't even bother correcting herself as her cheeks warm with blush. She backs away and manages to rip her eyes from him to turn around and head down the steps. She finds Henry playing a game with the kids and takes his hand, telling him it’s getting late. He leaves with a groan but doesn't make a fuss.
As they leave the yard, Emma turns around, getting one last glimpse of the devilishly handsome Victorian gentleman. He winks and smiles at her, making her heart stutter, and she blushes and walks away as she leaves with her son.
She had doubts when she moved to this small town to start over, but the warm feeling in her chest is telling her perhaps coming to Storybrooke wasn't a bad idea after all.

Sanders Sides Human AU
[Fair warning - this post is more like a stream of consciousness than a coherent set of ideas. I’m sorry...]
I was trying to think... what would be the most out of character set of jobs for the sides to have in Human AUs? Because there are normally three major options:
1) typical fandom arrangement, like barista, florist, or professor
2) all of them in one profession, e.g. sides as teachers or all working in one place (in one school, castle, hospital),
3) they have jobs inspired by the canon events and characteristics: Roman as an actor, Janus as a lawyer, Logan as a teacher, etc.
---
But what kind of jobs would be so unfitting that it would almost go against their very natures? I had a few ideas for potential AUs, so...
Remus as a nanny (or a babysitter). And a very good nanny, may I add. Kids absolutely adore him... parents not so much. He’s still very weird and looks daranged, but can be very gentle and thoughtfull. He’ll tell the most absurd and slightly scarry stories, make a mess playing with children, and is quite childish himself. But whenever parents want to change the nanny their kids start to protest and never like the new person that takes care of them after Remus. So he comes back despite parents’ different preferences. Seeing his attempts to teach other people better manners would be quite interesting.
Patton - the first werid instinct I had was: undertaker. This job has potentially some religious undertones so it may fit to a degree, so alternatively: coroner. Just something very much not cute and soft. A kind of job that would make people think that Patton lied about it for a joke when they ask where he works. They sometimes assume he makes the flower arrangements for the tombstones, but no. He buries people. Or checks what has killed them. Or both. He’s able to do it just fine, because he can easily take the emotionless, calm approach and not let the job drain him. Also he’s good at comforting the family of the deceised.
Virgil as... First I was thinking about something that requires a lot of bravery, but that would still fit his “fight or flight” nature. So nothing about being a soldier or a guard fits. There’s also a set of jobs that require some sort of reckless bravery... like skydiving instructor. Or scubadiver going to inspect very narrow caves. But I can also think about something that would directly contradict his “edginess”. Like the most boring, normal job you may think of. E.g. a very traditional job at the bank. So how about Virgil working with finances and sometimes skydiving during weekends. Then you mix the calm, not edgy job with something so potentially scary, that the embodiment of anxiety should not be involved.
Roman as... A boring job that goes against his extra-self would also fit. But maybe something that makes him stay out of the spotlight. Like an inspector checking very mundane things (if a bridge has a safe construction or if there are anough evacuation routes in buildings). Or something extremely complicated and professional that would require thorough and long education. I’ve recently has [THIS] idea about Roman being a scientist. And it fits, but I’m not sure if that’s enough. Maybe a taxi driver? You are largely anonymous, you are alone or with a person who don’t talk to you usually. That would be a nice addition if we want to combine all of them in one story, because he would get to know the others by driving them to work everyday. Ok. Roman as a taxi driver who annoys his clients by singing to all the songs on the radio. That’s decided.
Janus... I was thinking about a politician, because that would be a direct cooperation with the government and we can’t have that with Janus Classy We-Live-In-A-Society Sanders. That works, but being a politician also goes well with being manipulative, smooth, and with lying. So not a good option if we look for contrasts. If he were to have a job that doesn’t suit him it would be one that’s not very glamorous, silent, and probably not a profession where you need many qualifications. So a farmer maybe? He’d still have to know a lot, but being great at talking is not ecactly helpful when you just go around watering plants and collecting apples. (Although this farm, as much as he likes it, is probably some kind of cover up for a scam.)
Logan... Stand-up comedian. And specifically a one that makes a lot of jokes about himself. It’s still a Logan kind of thing, because he can talk a lot, but letting other people mock you is so not like him that I can let it slide. If he also dresses in very colourfull clothes it’s also a nice twist. When they all finally meet he can make a lot of jokes about a gay nanny, undertaker, accountant, taxi driver, farmer and comedian walking into a bar (all based on actual events). He may also, just like Virgil, have some additional job. I was thinking about something with graffiti, because you can combine artistic aspect, with a thing that is not taken seriously, and is often thought of as a destruction of property.
---
---
So yeah... We have a patient, delicate nanny/babysitter Remus, a calm and collected undertaker/coroner Patton dressed in all black, Virgil as an occasionally adventurous accountant with a white shirt and a tie, Roman as an anonymous taxi driver with worn out clothes, Janus as a farmer covered in dirt after a day of physical work, and a graffiti-making comedian Logan whose jokes are usually about himself... or about an eclective bunch of his friends from differents walks of life.
But outside of their career they are very much like themselves. Remus would laugh like a madman at the innuendos in cartoons he watches with kids, Patton would make puns about disecting a human body, Virgil would give seven thousands warnings about potential danger (no matter if he’s talking about opening an account or jumping from the plane), Roman would recite poetry to passenger trying to charm them while driving, Janus would win all the lawsuits despite being a serial tax-evader and use people’s stereotypical harmful thinking to make them believe he’s stupid, and Logan would make long jokes about climate change, proper sleep schedule etc. to sneakily teach people in the audience.
I’m really tempted to write a stoy about them now... Coming up with a plot explaining how they’ve met and stayed friends would be a nice challenge.
tl;dr - Giving the sides some unexpected jobs would be funny, so I propose a nanny (Remus), an undertaker (Patton), an accountant (Virgil), a taxi driver (Roman), a farmer (Janus), and a comedian (Logan).

Weekend Top Ten #470
Top Ten Films to Watch on Star on Disney+
We’ve been watching a lot of Disney+ lately. This is partly due to the fact that our family movie nights have become, almost accidentally, a quest to watch every bit of Star Wars content on the service; so far, we’ve watched the entire Skywalker Saga and are now moving onto the spin-off movies. The younglings have become addicted: Daughter #1 is getting stuck into The Clone Wars, whilst Daughter #2 is demanding we jump straight into The Mandalorian. As for the Princess to my Scoundrel, well, she and I have been thoroughly enjoying WandaVision, which by the time you read this, will have finished. Sob! Nothing to do but gird our loins until the arrival of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in a couple of weeks! At least this excellent TV programme appears to have whetted my wife’s appetite for watching more of the MCU movies. Maybe soon I can make oblique references to Mary Poppins, y’all, and someone else in the house will actually know what the hell I’m on about.
Well it looks as if there’s going to be even more use out of our Disney+ sub as the months roll inexorably on, what with their new Star channel. This is where they’ve shoehorned all the mucky films they bought from the naughty boys and girls at Fox; sweary adult dramas, sexy bits, and scenes of explicit wrist-slapping abound. So now we have this toybox of grown-up content to savour! What to watch? What not to watch? I’ve already started at the most obvious place by diving into some vintage Arnie with Commando, one of the funniest action movies ever made. It did not disappoint.
So where to next? Re-watching semi-forgotten classics, films I’ve not seen in literally decades? Or checking out things that slipped me by (there’s an entire list to be made of “films I read about in Empire in the ‘90s, got really excited about, but never saw”). Do I watch the crappier Die Hard films, or cheesy action movies (er, like Commando, I guess)? Or dive deep into prestige fair? Or just watch Spy Hard for the Weird Al theme tune, practically the only bit of the film I remember? The options are virtually endless.
So that’s what this week’s list is: ten films I intend to watch on Disney+ very flipping soon. Or, y’know, just play Zelda until Falcon starts.
Tumblr media
9 to 5 (1980): there was a lot of talk of Dolly around the New Year, and my wife and I even watched a documentary about her. As a result, I had a scoot around to see if it was possible to buy 9 to 5 as a birthday or Valentine’s gift for my better half; it’s a film neither of us have seen in years if not decades, and we’re both big Grace and Frankie fans too. Alas, it’s a difficult film to get a hold of; there doesn’t appear to be a Blu-ray readily available. Praise be, then, that it’s now on Disney+; a terrific comedy film, with a nice bit of feminist bite. I’m not sure if it’ll feel dated or – post-#MeToo – oddly prescient. But I’m really, really looking forward to watching it again.
Crimson Tide (1995): I do love a good tense thriller, and I seem to remember this as being a particularly great tense thriller. This feels like one of those “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore” candidates; a claustrophobic two-hander with no real action, almost a theatrical chamber piece, but made with huge stars and a big-time director (the late, great Tony Scott). I saw it once, on video, when it came out, so it’ll be great to revisit.
The Color of Money (1986): another minor classic that I’ve not seen for decades, and a film I remember even less well than Crimson Tide. It’s cool to revisit (or discover for the first time!) films by great directors, and this is Scorsese we’re talking about. Cruise as a freshly-minted movie star, still taking risks; Newman as a great elder statesman. I’ve genuinely no idea what it’s like, it’s been so long, but I’d love to see it again. Just wish The Hustler was on D+ too!
Quiz Show (1994): I’d mentioned before that there are loads of films from the ‘90s that I read about as an eager young film fan but never saw; this is one of them. An apparently-great drama about corruption at a hugely popular TV show in ‘50s America, with Ralph Fiennes in a very early Hollywood role. I think I’d enjoy it.
Looking for Richard (1996): another of those ‘90s films…! This fascinated me as a teen, and I’d love to see it: a documentary about Richard III, made by Al Pacino, featuring people talking about Shakespeare (got a lot of time for that) and also scenes of the play performed and filmed. It’s a real curio; also weirdly came out around the same time as McKellen’s Richard III. Maybe something was in the water? We’re due another big Rich in my opinion.
Jennifer’s Body (2009): a follow-up from Juno writer Diablo Cody, a horror centred around high school and female sexuality, this has always seemed like it might be a dark, delicious delight; it wasn’t very well received at the time, but has grown in cult status; as has its star, Megan Fox, who I’d argue has not had the easiest time within Hollywood. Anyway, I really like the look of it, and it’ll be cool to check it out.
Tombstone (1993): I love a good Western, and I seem to remember that this is a very good Western. A story of Wyatt Earp that goes beyond the famous gunfight, my memories of this are very vague; I know that there’s a very good Val Kilmer performance as Doc Holliday, and of course Kurt Russell as Earp himself. I might try out that “watch along” feature and watch this, remotely, with my dad.
Romancing the Stone (1984): I probably haven’t seen this since the eighties so I’ve got no idea if it’s really any good, but I do remember enjoying its Indy-inspired adventurism and – in particular – Danny DeVito’s bad guy. Douglas is always great value as a leading man, although from what I’ve since read this is really Kathleen Turner’s show. It’ll be interesting to see if it holds up, but hopefully it’ll be a good stop-gap until they finally get the Indy films up on the service.
Good Morning, Vietnam (1988): another film that I want to revisit, even if I remember it a little better than others on this list. My memory is that it’s utterly fantastic, a really stark look at the realities of Vietnam during the time of the war, and also a phenomenal, very human performance from Williams. Also I remember it being very funny when he does let off some steam (sorry, bit of Commando creeping in there). And really, it’s Williams I want to see again; that earnest, real, pained but beautiful Williams we get in his very best performances. It’s very likely I’ll cry just watching him on screen. God, I miss him.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016): I needed some crappy sequel to talk about, and here it is. I can’t overstate how much I loved the first Independence Day in ’96, so the (apparent; I’ve not seen it) terribleness of this sequel hit me like a sledgehammer. It can’t be that bad, can it? Is it not at least so-bad-it’s-good? I mean, the trailer made it look atrocious, and it’s killed off Will Smith – the best character! – off-screen, so odds are not good that it’s a hidden gem. But I’ve got to know.
This was actually a pretty tough list, and I had to knock off some films that I’d love to rewatch (Conan the Barbarian, The War of the Roses), as well as stuff like Idiocracy and Office Space that I’ve never seen. Also Kingsman: The Secret Service, which is a fairly recent release that slipped me by, and I’m not sure why I’ve never gotten round to seeing; I blame the kids! Also, there was going to be some xenomorph or xeno-monkey action on here, but frustratingly all the Alien (and Predator!) movies are missing, and the recent Planet of the Apes trilogy – which I’ve also never seen! – is only served by its middle instalment. Yeah, I can watch the seminal ‘60s original again (and I may!) or the indecipherable and strange Tim Burton version, but what about, y’know, the trilogy that everyone raves about? I assume this is due to pre-existing deals keeping the films elsewhere (elusive…), but the sagas of Alien, Predator, and the complete Die Hard package are – I believe – being kept until most profitable (mark my works: Die Hard at Christmas). Anyway, it’s a bit frustrating, that, as I’ve never seen Covenant or The Predator, and I’d love to watch the whole lot from the start anyway.
I guess I can console myself by also watching the one Die Hard film I’ve never seen, namely the critically-acclaimed A Good Day to Die Hard. I mean, I’m assuming it’s critically acclaimed. I guess I’ll find out.

Gonna post this again for my own tags/tagging purposes - originally for omgsuchegobang’s “Fluff Me To Death” contest. Not so fluffy, at least at the beginning, but we’ll get there.

Subject: Definitely Just Grump Business
From: Arin Hanson ([email protected]) To: Barry, Brian, Ross, Suzy (see details)
Alright gang,
Contrary to the clever and misleading subject line, this is NOT just Grump business. That was a ruse to keep Dan off our backs. Pretty smart, right?
We’re a week out, so I wanted to touch base with everyone about Dan’s birthday party. How’s everything coming together?
Your Lord and Commander, Arin

Cake = covered! …mostly. Dan’s not allergic to peanut butter, right? Are peanuts kosher?

Hey boss!
I’m taking Dan out Friday afternoon so you guys can come by and decorate the apartment. We’ll probably go see a movie or something. How much time do you think you’ll need?

Arin,
Thank you for the helpful reminder email. I’ve been working on a playlist I think Danny will really enjoy, so consider music/DJ services officially covered.
By the way, make sure to reply ONLY to my work email - Danny has access to the Ninja Sex Party account. Wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise by mistake.
Best, Dr. Brian Wecht, Ph.D Centre for Research on String Theory

Great. Great. Sounds awesome…. by “playlist”, you definitely *don’t* mean “every Rush album in order played back-to-back”, right? Just checking.
Final boss, Arin

Arin,
I didn’t say I was finished working on it. I’ll have something, ah… varied, for Saturday.

So I kinda maybe forgot Dan’s birthday party was this weekend. Can we switch our plans to Friday night instead? I promised Arin I’d distract Dan while everyone sets up.

Relax, dude, I’m totally joking. I definitely didn’t have any plans for Saturday.
I’m gonna pick up the decorations after work tomorrow night. The bachelorette party section at Party City should have dick-shaped pinatas, right? Dan’ll LOVE one of those!

What do you mean, you didn’t have plans for Saturday? Did you and Barry *both* forget about the party?!!? What, were you guys gonna hang out together or something?
Jesus. No. We’re not celebrating Dan’s birthday by beating a giant penis with a stick. I thought we agreed on a beach/island theme?
Get your shit together, Arin
Subject: If my dick were a pinata would I jizz candy? From: Ross To: Arin
No, Barry and I did not forget. How could I forget about Dan’s birthday? I already said I DIDN’T have plans. I didn’t even know Barry had plans. I bet if Barry did have plans, our plans wouldn’t have coincided. At all. And they wouldn’t have involved leather. Who’s Barry, anyway? He sounds like a fun guy.
Fine. Beachy island whatever it is. You just want an excuse to wear a bikini top in front of ~❤Daniel❤~
Wait… Brilliant idea… dicks on the beach! Best surprise birthday party theme ever!! I’m a genius.

Fine. Fine. Okay. You got us. Ross and I have been… intimate, for the last couple of months.
We just didn’t want to freak everyone out or mess with the office dynamic or anything!! Especially since we weren’t even sure if it was gonna work out!!! But it’s been going really well and we were gonna tell everyone soon I’M SORRY
Do us a favor and don’t tell Dan, okay? I wanna tell him on my own. Like a roomie thing.
Actually, don’t tell Brian either. He’d want to watch.

I just meant you can tell me you forgot about Dan’s birthday!!! Holy shit. Well, congrats dude. Although why you’d wanna be stuck with Ross is beyond me.
Speaking of, can you please make sure he doesn’t buy anything inappropriate for the party? I had to remind him a pinata shaped like a schween probably isn’t going to fit the theme.

Okay everybody. Doubling down because there seems to be some… confusion about this party situation.
Suzy, the cake sounds great. Dan’s probably not religiously opposed *or* allergic to peanuts, since yesterday I watched him inhale a family-sized bag of mini Reese’s cups in under twenty minutes, and he survived to make it to the Grump session this morning.
Brian, lots of Rush is cool, but maybe we could try adding some songs people can dance to?
Barry, we’ll probably need about two hours to decorate. Taking Dan to a movie is perfect.
Ross… just remember what I said about dicks.
Stay sparkly, Arin

What did you do?!?!?!?!?!
*** *** ***
Arin stood overlooking the city on the small back balcony of Dan and Barry’s apartment. The sun trailed pink and orange streaks, dipping low behind the skyline. An oversized hibiscus blossom tucked behind one ear swayed in the wind as Arin sipped his drink as morosely as one could sip virgin piña colada mix from a plastic tiki head. Heedless to his absence, the party thumped on inside.
The door behind him slid softly open. Dan joined him on the railing. His nose was striped with a thick block of white sunblock, and a chunky disposable camera hung around his neck and chest, bare from his unbuttoned, clashy Hawaiian shirt. He balanced a fork and a grayish palette of cake and mushed icing in one hand as he shut the door behind him.
“What are you doing out here all by yourself?” he asked, playful.
“Just getting a breather,” Arin said, hurriedly forcing energy into a cheerful smile.
Pausing, Dan smiled thinly. Arin’s skin prickled at the calculatory scan the older man gave him. “It’s a great party, dude,” Dan said, after a moment. “You should be proud.”
“I guess so,” Arin said, shrugging. A breath, and then - “You’re not just saying that?”
Dan nodded vigorously, curls bobbing up and down. “Of course not. What’s not to like?”
“I don’t know. I had to convince Brian not to start a fire in your living room, for one,” Arin sighed.
“Sounds like a normal Saturday, then,” Dan said. He shoveled a glob of icing into his mouth. “Suzy did a great job with the cake,” he chewed, orchestrating the point with jabs of his fork.
“You’ve got,” Arin said, automatically, “frosting,” and reached out to swipe the corner of Dan’s mouth with his thumb. Dan blushed, freezing Arin before he realized himself and what he’d just done. Recovering, he said “You, uh, don’t think the tombstone thing is a little… morbid? For a birthday party?”
The older man cocked an eyebrow. “I thought it was supposed to be a big blobby shark.”
Arin actually chuckled at that, softly, but sincerely. Dan grinned loosely and was about to continue when a rolling tide of muffled cheers erupted from inside. Arin’s eyes widened, manic, for a second, but Dan only laughed and shook his head. “I really loved the piñata, too,” he said. “Ross is such a fucker.”
“Tell me about it,” Arin said, immediately glowering. “I told him like, a HUNDRED times not to get the giant dick.”
“Who cares, man? Candy delivery system’s a candy delivery system,” Dan retorted. Arin smiled, small. Dan’s grin faded. “Hey, come on,” he said quietly. “What’s wrong?”
Arin opened his mouth to reply, then closed it again, lowering his gaze. “What is it?” Dan repeated, to no answer. Taking a bit of cake on his fork, his expression settled into grim determination as he slowly pressed forward, gently dotting Arin’s nose with frosting once, twice, three times before the younger man lost his battle and his face untwisted into a smile. Arin glared at Dan reproachfully for just a second, before allowing himself to be fed a bit of cake.
Satisfied, Dan set the empty plate down and looked to his friend again. “Arin,” he said, gingerly.
“I’m sorry it wasn’t a surprise,” Arin said, finally. “I just wish I could’ve made it better. Or gotten you something better, I don’t know.”
Dan looked thoughtful for a long moment. “Well,” he said, “surprise me now.”
Arin frowned. “Right,” he stuttered, “right now?”
“Mhm,” said Dan, decisively. He covered his eyes with his hands.
“I don’t-” Arin began, stopping short. He swallowed hard, his heart pounding harder and harder in his chest. If he was wrong about what Dan wanted…
Slowly, Arin stepped forward and closed the gap between them. He barely breathed, hoping the quiet rush of traffic and dampened music and chatter from inside would cover him. As his skin buzzed, Arin brushed one hand into the collar of Dan’s shirt to steady himself - and insistently pressed their lips together.
Dan tasted like pineapples and sugar, and something softly musical bubbled up from his throat as he returned the kiss. Eyes closed and heavy-lidded, Arin felt Dan’s fingertips brush past flower petals to sweep his hair behind his ear, then gently cup his face. He threaded his fist more firmly into the fabric and let the kiss deepen further, pulling Dan closer. He felt just the barest coaxing of Dan’s tongue on his lips before another ripple of laughter and chatter from inside startled them both back into reality.
Jumping, Arin tried to pull back, but Dan held him solidly in place, turning slowly from the door back to the younger man as he deemed the coast clear. Still cupping Arin’s face, he rubbed Arin’s nose with his own, affectionately, before allowing Arin a delicate half-step back.
“You’ve got,” Dan said, sheepishly, “here,” and rubbed a bit of sunblock off Arin’s nose with his thumb. Arin made a small, content noise, low in his chest.
“Dan?”
“Yes?”
“Happy birthday.”

How We Saved $1,350 On Our Beach House Appliances
I’d like to say we strategically planned to buy all of our beach house appliances (besides the pink stove, that is) during Black Friday sale season. But really, it was just some lucky timing. Timing so lucky that it saved us over $1350, in fact! The appliances won’t arrive until after Thanksgiving, but in case you wanted to snag some of the same deals, we’re sharing what we chose, how we saved, and why a last-minute floor plan change helped us get even more for less.
sconces / counters / cabinets / pendants / hood / stove / walls: SW White Heron / trim: SW Stone Isle
Let’s first talk about our change of plans. If you remember this post about planning our kitchen, we had been thinking about purchasing this fridge to go along the same wall as the stove. There were very few white fridges that fit the small area we had, so it was almost a given – but our gut told us to wait on purchasing it until the kitchen started to come together more.
It’s a good thing we did because as we started building cabinets, Sherry’s biggest fear about that fridge started to materialize, thanks to this cardboard mockup that we made out of our island stool boxes (I’m pretty sure if Serena & Lily made a refrigerator though, Sherry would want it – It’d probably be all inlay or capiz).
Anyways, the issue is hard to see in the photo above. Sure, it cramps the door molding a bit more than we’d like, but our main gripe was that it was such an obnoxious visual obstruction from this other view below – which would be seen every single time anyone walks into the room from the living room or the foyer. I’m sure part of the problem is that we’ve just grown accustomed to how open everything has been for months, but we (especially Sherry, who jokes that her tombstone could someday read “Lover Of Balance And Sight Lines”) weren’t loving how the future fridge would encroach on the view of the back door and the door to breakfast nook.
We considered moving the fridge to the back wall between the two doorways, but it was even more cramped looking back here. Sidenote: the plumber included a water line in his standard package, even though the fridge we were planning to buy didn’t have an ice maker, so that’s why you see that there.
So after much debate, we came to the conclusion that we shared in our last update: we’re gonna turn the breakfast nook into a walk-in pantry, and the fridge will go in there.
It’s hard to tell in photos, but you can kinda see in this one from a few weeks ago (before we had the light fixture correctly centered) that it would be a somewhat cramped breakfast nook. Even with just a placeholder table and chairs, it wasn’t very comfortable to move around in. Plus, with seating for 4 people at the island and 6-8 people at the dining table, it was starting to feel like overkill (keep in mind that this house will most likely sleep 8 people, and we’ll have already seating for 12 people without a breakfast nook).
The decision to turn that nook into a pantry immediately felt like a HUGE functional improvement to the first floor. We’ll have plenty more space for the dry goods that people bring to the beach (cereal boxes, bags of chips, those comically large barrels of pretzels, etc) plus we gain a spot for people to store their coolers. We’re also debating moving the microwave in there instead of having it in the island, which earns us one more deep drawer in the kitchen for more storage (we only have 8 kitchen cabinets, so we want to make the most of them). Plus we can fit a larger fridge in there too. All good things!
But I still was pretty insistent on using that sliver of wall space for refrigerating frequently used items. This means things like milk, OJ, eggs, etc can be within reach of the prep areas while the full-sized fridge will be just a few steps away in the pantry. That idea led us to this vintage-inspired mini-fridge from Amazon that jives well with our stove AND won’t visually interfere with any sight lines. Plus, it was MUCH cheaper than a lot of the other retro style fridges out there.
It arrived last week so we got to plug it in and everything (I had an ice cold Coke and it was glorious – sayonara Aquatober!). Don’t mind the big black hole in the wall below. We had to move the old fridge outlet lower to be hidden by the smaller fridge, so we still need to patch that. And of course baseboards are missing on both sides, so it’ll look a lot more finished eventually (still need to add a backsplash and our open shelves too).
But now let’s talk about the rest of the appliances. We still needed a washer & dryer for the mudroom, a dishwasher for the island, and that larger fridge for the pantry.  So we hit up Home Depot last week to hunt down some early Black Friday deals (oddly enough a ton of them are running already). We quickly zeroed in on this Maytag Bravos XL top-loading washer and electric dryer set.
Picking these was easy for a few reasons:
We have plenty of room for a standard side-by-side washer and dryer set in the beach house mudroom, so we didn’t have to hunt down some weird size or finish.
We have basically the same models in our own laundry room (ours are older and slightly smaller) and we’ve been VERY happy with them.
They were super marked down! Both originally $899, but on “Special Buy” for $599 each.
We actually got HIGHER CAPACITY laundry appliances than what we have here at home for LESS MONEY (those were $799 marked down to $651). We figure the extra room (about 1 cubic foot each) will be helpful at a beach house since they’ll mainly be used for towels and bedding.
The dishwasher was a little more challenging to select because we wanted white (so it would blend in with the cabinets, leaving the pink stove as the only accent). But oddly enough, these days stainless steel is easier to come by and in some cases – including ours – the white was actually a bit more expensive than the stainless steel version, which still shocks me.
We landed on this Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher since we had a similar Frigidaire Gallery one in our last house. We liked the inconspicuous top-controls and the blends-right-in white toekick on this model (often those are black). It was $499 at Home Depot, but I realized in writing this post that it was $50 cheaper at both Lowe’s and Best Buy, so on our way out to the beach house this weekend, I ran into Home Depot and they price adjusted it to match, so we got it for $449!
Finding a fridge was the toughest part. The breakfast nook-turned-pantry is still a challenging room for a fridge because of the windows & doorway. Basically, we don’t have any wall that can accommodate a fridge any deeper than 28″ (most counter-depth fridges start around 30″). But after some hunting, we stumbled upon this “apartment-sized” refrigerator by Haier. We’d never heard of the brand, but it’s made by GE and has really good reviews. One person even said something like “we got this for our beach house and love it!” Pretty sure that’s a sign. Since it’s not going in the main kitchen area, we don’t mind that it’s not white. Plus, it’s marked down OVER $500, so a $1,200 fridge could be ours for $698!
The last bit of savings came from a special deal that Home Depot was running based on how many appliances you buy at a time. Basically, if you buy 2 appliances you save $50; if you buy 3 appliances you save $100; if you buy 4 appliances you save $200 (that’s us!), etc. And FYI, Lowe’s is running a nearly identical promotion this month. The only difference I can see is you get the money back in gift cards, not cash.
So for anyone who lost track along the way (which includes me), here’s a quick snapshot of what we got (fridge / washer / dryer / dishwasher) and what we saved:
$2,150 is still a big old chunk of change to drop (and that doesn’t include the pink stove, mini fridge, or microwave) but we feel really good about our final selections being brands we’ve already purchased and loved, or machines that have great ratings and should totally do the job for us (we’re looking at you, fridge!).
Oh, and speaking of spending money on things that are super functional but not always glamorous, we also hung blinds throughout the entire beach house on Saturday. They’re cordless white faux wood blinds (also from Home Depot – I was getting them cut while Sherry finalized our appliance checkout).
vanity / stool / towel / art / light / walls: SW White Heron / mirror: HomeGoods
They’re similar to the ones we installed here at home, except that they’re cordless (safer for young renters, plus they look even cleaner without those cords hanging down) so they just raise and lower just by pulling on the bottom. I can’t tell you how nice it was to shower in the bathroom for the first time without my “modesty cardboard” shoved in the windows.
floor tile / floor accent tile / marble table / tub color: SW Riverway / walls: SW White Heron
Quick tip for installing a boatload of blinds (we had 29 windows): tag team with one person unpacking and prepping them (snapping the rod in, removing the protective cardboard, etc) and the other person drilling and hanging. I also pre-drilled holes everywhere first so I wasn’t losing time switching my drill bits back-and-forth each time. It still took us about 3 hours, but it could’ve been much worse.
Anyways, Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We’ll give you guys an update after the appliances arrive next week, since we also owe you more about our other big plan-change in the kitchen.
P.S. To read more about how we restored this beach house over the last year, here are all the previous posts about everything from sharing the before shots and floor planning to getting drywall and mad-dash tiling three bathrooms. It’s been quite the ride, guys.

How We Saved $1,350 On Our Beach House Appliances http://ift.tt/2mNDmzL
