Round One
House of Finwë (The Silmarillion) VS the Preaker/Crellins (Sharp Objects)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
House of Finwë art by Jenny Dolfen
House of Finwë
Members: Finwë, Míriel, Indis, Findis, Fëanor, Fingolfin, Finarfin, Lalwen, and many others
Propaganda:
"The whole events of the Silmarillion - including a few wars, a dark lord, the destruction of a continent, etc - revolve around this family's drama" "Well míriel died and finwë remarried to indis, and fëanor hated his half siblings, going so far as to threaten fingolfin with a sword. Then after the fëanorians and fingon and maybe others killed a bunch of people, fëanor abandoned fingolfin so he couldn't follow, and when finarfin turned back his kids didn't and they left him. After that it's all feuds and murders and death and treason and such. Greatest hits of that include maeglin betraying turgon and trying to murder idril and eärendil, plus maedhros and maglor kidnapdopting elrond and elros. Also we don't even know who gil-galad's parents are" More propaganda here
The Preaker/Crellins
Members: Adora Crellin, Alan Crellin, Camille Preaker, Marian Crellin, Amma Crellin
Propaganda:
CW: Munchausen by proxy, murder, self-harm, drugs, strangulation
"Adora has Munchausen by proxy and, before the start of the book, slowly poisons Marian to death while accepting all the praise everyone gives her for being such a devoted caretaker to her “sick” daughter. She also completely ignored Camille during that time because she refused to take “medicine” and caretaking from Adora, which ends up driving her to self harm. Years later, Camille returns to her home town (and her mother) to investigate the disappearances/deaths of 2 preteen girls. She ends up bonding with her 13-year-old sister, Amma, who leads a near double life of sweet, obedient, devoted daughter vs rebellious teen that drinks and does drugs and parties. Adora tells Camille one night that Camille is cold and that’s why she could never love Camille. Alan is heavily implied to know what she’s doing to her daughters, but only turns up his music to ignore what’s going on. Adora is arrested for the dead girls' murders, along with Marian’s. Amma comes to live with Camille and Camille tries to help heal Amma and herself from Adora’s abuse. It goes well until Camille compliments Amma's friend. Amma’s friend is found strangled, the same as the two other girls, and Camille realizes that Amma was the one who had killed the other girls because Adora had been tutoring and paying more attention to them than Amma. Amma was jealous and wasn’t willing to give up Adora’s attention, even though she knew it would kill her." Note: edited for length, full submission here

When i want to dig through my emotional trauma regarding my mom —> sharp objects ( book or series because both together slaughter me so beautifully. Something something our mother is our carver and grave digger something something we never escape the house we grew up in, the house we lost everything in; always being afraid to become who hurt us—tangling ourselves in the line between the kindness in ourselves and the sickness in our parents)
When i want to dig through my emotional trauma regarding my dad —> succession (there is nothing for me to say here, i watch a dad kick his children and watch them come back to him no matter what circumstance because they want his love; dangling the legacy, the opportunity of a lifetime in front of your kids and then drowning them when they get to close; wanting your kids to be killer, but them never doing it because they want your love too much; fear vs love)
When i want to dig through both my maternal and paternal issues and also the fact that love is carnal —> hannibal (i mean surrogate parents; manipulation at the highest form, obsession for understanding; layers upon layers of desire unfurling themselves under each other; trying to find parents in the people who took the most from you; having someone affect your life so deeply there is a before and after with them in the middle)

Amma/Camille could have won this round, if Sharp Objects had more explicit incest in it. I knew she is a V.C Andrews girlie and I could tell she was holding her self back a bit. The whole entire Preaker/Crellin Family Tree should have been fill with weird inbreeding, like the Dollanganger’s family.
COULD sharp objects win against wincest if it had been even more incestuous? Experts say. Well as the person running this here poll its my job to stay neutral but. You know.

this is kind of random but this has been nagging at me for a little while and i havent been able to format it into like a question?? like i dont even know what my own question about it is but i know theres an answer you know?? but i was wondering if you had thoughts on the last names in sharp objects?? i always thought it was interesting that camille was the only preaker left that wasnt dead, and adora treats her like a stranger even though marian was also a preaker.
[contd] maybe im crazy. but i always thought adoras adherence to the realistic but unrealistic and kind of eerie social construct that literally drowns every woman in wind gap was an integral part in her character that i couldnt quite piece together in a way that clicked. like camilles identity as a preaker vs her mothers as a crellin but also most importantly as something other than a preaker is just hmmmm and i wondered if u noticed that too and/or had thoughts on it ?? - letterboxdanon
OGH yeas i have sooooo many thoughts as you are about to see by the length of this response because camille IS the only preaker!!! alan is both marian and amma's father, but he's just camille's step-father. preaker is adora's maiden name and since she had camille out of wedlock as a 17(18?)yo kid, it's not even the last name of camille's father- but then adora left all that embarrassment behind by marrying alan (still in her teens, also!!! alan sucks!!!) and having marian a few years later. adora cut herself from the preaker name through marriage, a normal thing that often changes women's names, had a child with that new name, and gained a cleaner social standing from doing both. idk why they didn't just erase the preaker name entirely by making camille a crellin but i think alan is so old fashioned that he'd be against giving a child that's not His his last name. maybe it just made it that much easier to hate camille, who knows.
iirc also adoras parents were sooooo pissed about her getting knocked up by some dude as a teen they both died within like a year of camille being born as well?? so adora really did a speedrun from child to mother to orphan to wife to mother of two, and i think for her having a new name and a new child with that new name was a good way to reinvent herself and her image- and isnt windgap aaallllllllllllll about image? changing her name while also continuing to reap the benefits of Preaker Hog Farm TM also means that she gets to almost fossilize?? the name and her family's empire/fortune, bc she still gets money from that.
so like! she treats camille as a stain on the preaker name/line because she literally is one in adora's eyes: she was a mistake, she killed the only other living preakers while retaining the legacy connected to the name- undeservedly- she doesn't adhere to windgap rules (or adora's rules, which are the same honestly), she mourns her sister too loudly, and then she leaves. but its fine, thank god she left, bc now adora gets to continue to reinvent herself and her image with amma and anne nash and natalie keene: adora crellin, that fine woman with her beautiful house and her beautiful roses and her beautiful daughter- bless her heart for helping those girls, especially after losing her first.
and then, camille shows up.
camille is a walking talking violation of adora's reinventation- she's a reminder to adora of her accidental pregnancy, camille's father, the deaths of her parents, the loss of marian- but she's also a reminder to the entire town of wind gap that adora used to be a preaker, too.

okay so here’s what i’m thinking
s1: ann nash + natalie keene deaths, camille comes to write about them and the other kids that go missing. ann’s body has been found before camille arrives by a creek in the woods, natalie’s body is found later the day camille arrives in an alley. they both have missing teeth, pink painted nails (notably unlike them), and appear to have been strangled.
s2: soil samples are taken from bob nash’s (ann’s father) tires, john keene (natalie’s brother) is fired from his job at the preaker’s farm because of his reputation. camille writes an article about the murders which is discovered by amma and adora. while at a town celebration at the crellin’s house, a drunken bob starts a fight with john under the belief that he killed his sister and bob’s daughter.
s3: ann’s bike is found in the lagoon by preaker’s farm, and someone that works at the farm later identifies john keene as the one that put it there. a detective that camille had been in a romantic relationship with discovers that marian, camille’s half sister, had been poisoned by adora while investigating camille’s past. adora begins feeding the same medicine to amma under the pretense of a hangover cure. john keene is arrested by the police for the murder of ann and natalie. camille learns about her mother killing marian from a family friend, and also that marian's body was cremated to avoid suspicion. with everything that she’s learned and knowing that amma is now sick, she goes to confront her mother. as adora begins to take amma upstairs, camille fakes sick so she will poison her instead. richard goes to confront adora with the police, and when he does he finds that his suspicions are true. amma and adora are hospitalized and adora is arrested, both for poisoning her daughters, marian, and for the murders of ann and natalie after plyers are found that match the marks on ann and natalie’s gums.
s4: amma and camille deal with the aftermath, and they live together in an apartment in hawkins. amma visits adora in jail, but she’s also growing and has made a new friend named mae who lives close by that seems to be a better influence on her than jodes and kelsey, the other two girls in her mean girl troupe.
??: mae is found dead with painted nails, missing teeth, and having been strangled.
??: amma is arrested for the murders of ann, natalie, and mae after camille finds their teeth in the floor of amma’s dollhouse.

CRITIQUE PAPER #2
Title: Sharp Objects
Author: Gillian Flynn
Characters: Camille Preaker
                   Amma Crellin
                   Adora Crellin
                   Detective Richard Willis
                   Alan Crellin
                   Ann Nash
                   Natalie Keene
                   Chief Vickery
                   John Keene
                   Frank Curry
                   Eileen Curry
Characterization:
Camille Preaker: A young journalist trying to make a better life for herself in Chicago. She has suffered for years after the death of her sister Marian at a very young age. Camille spent time in a psychiatric hospital near Chicago after years of self-harm.
Amma Crellin: Camille's 13-year-old half-sister, who is the "it girl" in the town of Wind Gap, Missouri. She lives a double life as a perfect Southern daughter to Adora and also the mean girl to the rest of the town. She terrorizes those living in the town as she attempts to rule everyone around her.
Adora Crellin: Camille and Amma's mother, a strict woman who rarely shows any type of positive emotion towards Camille, and treats Amma like a baby doll. Her family is the wealthiest in the area and owns many of the businesses in the surrounding areas, and she has a firm hold on the social atmosphere of Wind Gap.
Detective Richard Willis: A detective from Kansas City homicide division tasked to investigate the crimes happening in Wind Gap.
Alan Crellin: Adora's husband, Amma and Marian's biological father, and Camille's stepfather. He is well reserved, quiet and believes whatever Adora tells him, even if it is a lie. He lets Amma do everything she pleases and provides whatever she asks for.
Ann Nash and Natalie Keene: Two innocent victims of a gruesome crime in Wind Gap being investigated by Camille Preaker and Detective Willis. Ann, 9, is the first victim, and Natalie, 10, is the second.
Chief Vickery: Chief of police in Wind Gap who asked for Detective Willis' help in investigating the crimes.
John Keene: Natalie's 18-year-old brother. He is one of the main suspects in the murders, and his alibi during the disappearance of his sister sounds suspicious to the police and townspeople.
Frank Curry: Camille's editor-in-chief, boss and friend. He encourages Camille to return to Wind Gap to cover a story of unresolved murders in her hometown.
Eileen Curry: Frank's wife and a surrogate mother to Camille. Eileen often corresponds with Camille over the phone while she's in Wind Gap.
Summary: Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects tells the story of Camille, a crime reporter living in Chicago. After a little girl goes missing in Camille’s hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri, Camille’s boss talks her into going home to report on the disappearance. Although she is reluctant to revisit her hometown, a place she hasn’t seen in over ten years, she is eager to please her boss and gives in to his pleas. Most the novel takes place in Wind Gap as Camille tries to connect details of the little girl’s disappearance to a previous murder, while also trying to avoid her past. Told from Camille’s point of view, the straightforward and often vulgar syntax reflects her journalistic background and the bitter view she has of her environment. While the novel technically starts with Camille sitting in her Chicago office at the Daily Post, the plot really begins once she enters Wind Gap. Wind Gap seems like a normal small Midwestern town, but it quickly becomes clear that Camille and her hometown share many dark secrets. Camille immediately begins drinking once she reenters her hometown, and continues to do so for most of the novel. Her obsessive drinking demonstrates her desire to forget her past. Most notably, Camille tries not to think about her little sister, who died of a mysterious illness, while also trying to reconcile the contempt between she, her mother, and her little half-sister. It’s revealed that Camille used to carve words into her body with sharp objects, and that she was recently released from a self-imposed stay at a psychiatric hospital. While Camille’s internal struggle is the heart of the novel, the external plot revolving around the Wind Gap child murders gives the novel forward momentum. Throughout each chapter, Camille talks to various people, including police detectives and her former friends and acquaintances, ultimately leading her to uncover the truth behind the crimes—her mother slowly poisoned her little sister to death, and her half-sister killed the little girls. Although the general plot is a straightforward murder mystery, the many subplots, including Camille’s budding romance with the out-of-town detective, complicate the narrative and reveal Camille’s metamorphosis as a character. While Camille starts out as secretive and self-harming, by the end she has become self-aware and accepting of love.
Moral Lesson: The moral lesson that we must have in the story is  that we must always be observant, and if it looks like a child is being abused you have to act and get them help. Too many people looked away while Adora was slowly killing her girls. Never be that person and take an action.

I've talked so much shit about Gone Girl in the last few days but seriously the most chilling parts of the book to me is the last third of it.
Just reading these two people who really do hate each other so much, one of whom really has deluded herself into thinking this is love and this is the ideal, is honestly disgusting. I wanted the other shoe to drop. I wanted SOMETHING to happen.
But it ends in a weird stalemate. I just feel sorry for the kid. Seeing first hand how Amy's parents raised her and knowing Nick is mostly desperate to prove to himself he's better than his father in that he can love and care for his own child they're going to have a shit ton of problems.

Hey ! Sorry to be so forward and just strike up conversation on a whim (I’m tipsy) but ty for following me back!! You seem cool and I’m also into these shows that have cultish themes i.e, twin peaks, true detective, sharp objects, Hannibal. I’m currently rewatching true detective for the third? time and am curious who your fave character is and why
Hi! Love a little liquid courage :) also love your art!
Just a little warning, this response really got away from me, so I'm putting it under a cut
True Detective is very close to my heart, and of all the characters, Rust Cohle is my favorite.. he’s honestly one of my favorite characters from anything.
All the shows you mention, the ones in what I call the toothsome tv universe, really seem to talk to each other: the cultish/occult themes, the monsters and becoming! So much to sink your teeth into. Since you asked in the context of these other shows, I’m going to bring them into it.
I appreciate Rust and Marty as foils, but Rust is the beating heart of True Detective. He’s a man trying so hard to be a nihilist, to smother the love inside him before it kills him. This post pretty much sums it up, but I’m gonna ramble more about him because it’s not often I get to.
Rust’s got traditional markers of your stoic lead, in that he’s dangerous, smart, laconic. But that characterization goes to shit in the first episode when we see how much of a mess he is around the anniversary of his daughter’s death. It’s clear that he’s not an aloof cool guy, but a little awkward and *so* vulnerable. That’s the kicker, he’s an open wound of a man.
His childhood’s a little like Will Graham’s—absent mom, raised by his father near the natural world (Louisiana river boats for Will, Alaskan wilderness for Rust). There’s something key there about the maternal human influence being replaced by mother nature, or the Sublime. Almost as if they were suckled by the wilds, and so have been given a supernatural boon… that they are outside of society, and yet have the uncanny ability to read people.
We don’t know what Will’s relationship with his father is like, but we know that Rust’s dad and him didn’t really like each other. There’s some disconnect between them. I think Rust never felt understood. He was always smart (and a smartass), and I get the sense he made people feel bad about themselves unintentionally when he was younger (including his father). I think he probably began using his smarts as a defense.
And again, there’s that high grade of empathy (like Will or like Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks, but I’ll get into that later). Rust is sensitive. He understands other people, knows how to get people to talk. He also must have been an artsy kid if he could have been an painter in another life. Considering all of this, the picture of why he was alienated from his father becomes clearer. How does a veteran and survivalist deal with a sensitive artist for a son?
Side note: I really love that Rust has artistic tendencies. It's such an important detail in my mind. He is a man gathering details in his ledger, "mainlining the secret truth of the universe," shining his flashlight on the devil traps and case pictures with Tina Turner playing in the background. He's just the best.
But back to his father, Rust says he loved him, and I believe that. But there was an unsurpassable distance between them. Makes me wonder how much Rust might have reminded his father of his mom. I’m sure Rust was instrumentally parentified (or expected to fend for himself at the very least), but I doubt very much there was emotional parentification. No, I get the sense his father was very much a locked room that Rust couldn’t break into.
... I think these fraught relationships with parents are essential to these shows, with the most intense/disturbing examples being Camille Preaker and Amma Crellin's relationships with Adora in Sharp Objects, and Laura and Leland Palmer in Twin Peaks. It's underlining that family trauma and the breakdown of the nuclear family is everywhere... this is actually one area I wish True Detective developed more with the Harts. His daughters are clearly suffering, this conservative family structure failing everyone but especially the girls. It's not just the big bad weird incestual cult - the rot is everywhere.
In this vein, I find it so interesting Rust’s trauma feels bookended by two absent female characters: his mother and his daughter. His mother’s absence sets the mold for his core characteristics, and his daughter’s death is the singular traumatic event that shapes the rest of his life. He does accumulate more trauma with the undercover work (which was really a roundabout way of trying to kill himself), but it’s all echoes of his daughter’s absence. We never see him as a father, but Sophia never really feels like just a plot point to me. She’s haunting Rust (he literally sees her ghost in episode 1). We see her impact in the gentleness Rust has when dealing with innocents.
I think one of the best things about True Detective (and a big part of why the second season is such crap) is the time jumps, the circular story-telling (“my whole life is just one expanding circular fuck up” and “time is a flat circle”). We see these characters age - how they mature and settle and deteriorate. Maybe even get better. You see how Rust and Marty have influenced each other for the better, and how the absence of the other has eroded their quality of life
The way the show is shot - these three versions of Rust - feel like complimentary doppelgängers, not even mentioning Crash, his alter ego (and the Rust we never meet before Sophia’s death). Each has different parts of a puzzle, and like the narrative, they are cycling through each other.
‘95 Rust is coming off of the horrors and loneliness of the undercover work. He’s physically and mentally feeling those effects what with the hallucinations and synesthesia (which I believe he had before, but the drug abuse makes the synesthesia more intense). He is justifying his pain with his pessimistic philosophy. He’s a relatively self-aware character (I’m the bad man you keep around to keep other bad man from the door), but even so he cannot broach the deep wound his daughter left.
Even within his pessimistic diatribes, the line: "... walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight - brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal," always struck me as deeply empathetic. He's in so much pain and has surrounded himself with by others’ pain to numb himself out. He just wants all this suffering to end.
‘02 Rust is settled in his job, in the small connections he’s made with Marty and Maggie. He's was dating again, and in a serious relationship with a smart woman who might’ve understood him. But all that implodes with the case coming back, not to mention with the betrayal of him and Maggie sleeping together.
Then there's the brittle ‘12 Rust. The most set in his ways but the most delicate as well (“brittle”). The line "I know who I am, there’s a victory in that," contrasting with this one:
“I can be hard to live with. I don't mean to, but I can be... critical... Sometimes I think I'm just not good for people, that it's not good for them to be around me."
He's terminally lonely, with only his failures shaming him to continue with the case, which is his only thing he has left to fix before he can kill himself.
Again, I'm reminded of Will Graham in season one of Hannibal, where he's isolated himself, convinced he's not good for anyone, despite his deep well of empathy. Just like it takes Hannibal for Will to start living, It takes Marty and Rust coming back together for them to wake up from their sad sleep-walking lives. I don't care if you ship them, but the relationship is one of the most important things in the show.
The final Carcosa confrontation is the culmination, where Rust hopes to right his failures, complete his purpose and end his pain (by dying). This really feels like a Laura Palmer moment to me. this is from another post of mine:
there’s something here about rust and laura… laura who faced the lodge and died like rust expected to. the only reason rust survived carcosa was because of marty… laura is in that train car with ronette, but ronette isn’t prepared for the darkness like marty was. ronette couldn’t get laura out of there.
Many people have compared Rust to Dale Cooper, and I think there's a lot of meat to be gleaned there, especially if we're comparing their opposite approaches, and perhaps different Lodge affiliations - (not to be too Twin Peaks but 👀).
"I can see your soul at the edges of your eyes. It's corrosive, like acid. You got a demon little man... there's a shadow in you son."
- This feels so Lodgey to me. Just like Coop and Laura dealing with a possession (if you haven't read My Life My Tapes, Coop's autobiography, I highly suggest it). And possession is a reciprocal act. Rust knows he's a bad man, a monster. But he's able to use that. @renmorris has a few really interesting things to say about these parallels on their blog (just realize they say the same thing about the absent family 😵‍💫).
But I think the Laura connection feels... truer somehow. Laura is the One in Twin Peaks, and while Rust is the investigator, I think he's actually the One in True Detective (there's definitely a whole other meta about True Detective's disregard for its female characters, but this isn't the place). Rust is the sacrificial lamb. The martyr. The beating heart of True Detective.
I love him to bits, and it's about time for a rewatch!

Propaganda for Preaker/Crellins Family
CW: Munchausen by proxy, murder, self-harm, drugs, strangulation, possible implied incest
Spoilers for Sharp Objects
"Adora has Munchausen by proxy and, before the start of the book, slowly poisons Marian to death while accepting all the praise everyone gives her for being such a devoted caretaker to her “sick” daughter. She also completely ignored Camille during that time because she refused to take “medicine” and caretaking from Adora, which ends up driving her to self harm by cutting words into her skin. She evens refuses to let Camille into her room, which has a floor made entirely of elephant ivory.
Years later, after the book starts, Camille returns to her home town (and her mother) to investigate the disappearances/deaths of 2 preteen girls. She ends up bonding with her 13-year-old sister, Amma, who leads a near double life of sweet, obedient, devoted daughter that just wants to play with her dollhouse (an exact replica of the Crellin house) vs rebellious teen that drinks and does drugs and parties. Adora tells Camille one night that Camille is cold, like Adora’s mother and Camille’s father, and that’s why she could never love Camille. She also forces Camille to show her self harm scars to her and Amma while shopping and at another point, touches a spot on Camille’s back (the only unscarred skin on her body) and tells her that she’ll carve her name there one day.
Adora eventually discovers Amma’s lies and starts poisoning her to death the same way she did to Marian, but Camille figures out what she’s doing and lets Adora poison her to distract her from Amma. Even as she’s killing Camille, Adora gives her more love and attention than she’d ever given her daughter before. Alan is heavily implied to know what she’s doing to her daughters, but only turns up his music to ignore what’s going on. Once help comes, tools with the dead girls’ blood on them are discovered and Adora is arrested for their murders, along with Marian’s.
Amma comes to live with Camille and Camille tries to help heal Amma and herself from Adora’s abuse. It goes well and Amma even makes a friend until Camille compliments her friend and doesn’t baby Amma the way Adora did. Amma’s friend is found strangled with all of her teeth pulled, the same as the two other girls, and Camille realizes that Amma, along with her friends, was the one who had killed the other girls because Adora had been tutoring and paying more attention to them than Amma. Amma was jealous and wasn’t willing to give up Adora’s attention, even though she knew it would kill her. Amma even went so far as to use the girls’ teeth to recreate the ivory flooring of her mother’s bedroom."

SHARP OBJECTS (HBO)
Amy Adams, in her first major role on the small screen, as reporter Camille Preaker, who returns to her small hometown to investigate mysterious, unsolved crimes. Two girls are missing, one of whom was found dead and presumed murdered. As she searches for clues, Camille reunites with her estranged family -- overbearing mother Adora, stepfather Alan Crellin, and half sister Amma -- which rekindles traumatic childhood memories, including the death of her younger sister. Piecing together a psychological puzzle from her past, Camille begins to identify with the young victims a bit too closely.
Rating: ✮✮✮✮✮ 5/5
sharp objects is one of the best book to screen adaptations and one of the best pieces of fiction hands down
it was heartbreaking, frustrating, fascinating, confusing, moody, dramatic, scary, beautiful, shocking - one of the best ensemble dramas i've ever seen. no weak links in that cast. amazing script.
amy adams gave one of the best performances of the century in sharp objects and has been bad in everything since. someone please do something to lift her out of this rut, i can’t take it anymore.

did you hear how CAMILA THAYER is applying to columbia university as an ENGLISH major ?! the TWENTY year old is living in the WATT HALL. i heard that they got in because they are + CREATIVE and + PASSIONATE, but honestly i think SHE can be - RESERVED and -ARROGANT. they’re a real ACADEMIC. oh well, only time will tell if the SOPHOMORE will make it til the end.
full name : camila allen thayer

ethnicity : 1/2 ashkenazi jewish, 1/2 english
religion : atheist
sexual & romantic orientation : bisexual , biromantic
hometown : hampton , new hampshire & cheraw , south carolina
accent : twinge of a southern accent , but mostly a posh new england accent
languages spoken : english , conversational french
major : english
minor(s) : latin & french

aesthetics : plaid skirts and knee socks , clawfoot bathtubs , sylvia plath poetry books , thin framed glasses , pink highlight , wandering through the met , film cameras , hand written letters + PINTEREST
character parallels : astrid sloan ( the politician ) , camille preaker ( sharp objects ) , amma crellin ( sharp objects ) , camilla macaulay ( the secret history ) , serena vanderwoodson ( gossip girl ) , donna sheridan ( mamma mia here we go again )
personality & headcanons
camila has always been a quiet individual , especially around those she doesn’t know . calm , cool , collected , many people’s initial impression of her is that she hates them due to her resting bitch face and the lack of acknowledgment she gives before she’s truly comfortable around a person
she does not open up easily , and doesn’t really know how to handle being loved . so she typically doesn’t let anybody get that close .
major abandonment issues and daddy issues . so she seeks validation from men and also if she lets you in be prepared to fucking stay
doesn’t party much because she prefers to stay in and study or be with her closest friends , she drinks but prefers small social gatherings with those she’s close to
has a nasty cigarette habit and shows no signs of stopping
her favorite season is the fall , and her favorite holiday is halloween
i think she’s v mysterious sort of ? like , this really pretty girl that keeps to herself mostly , and her small group of friends , but she’s got this alluring aspect of her that draws some near .. v greek mythology siren esque
very soft , but also not at all ? like wears skirts and knee socks and berets and flow-y white dresses and sits in coffee shops while it rains reading poetry BUT , she can be dangerous . seductive , arrogant , selfish , and quite emotionless at times . v ice maiden type , will use beauty to get what she wants in the most subtle of ways
so basically she comes off as this sweet , elegant woman with a soft smile who spends her weekends at museums , but when you get closer to her ( if you get closer to her ) you might see a much darker side to her
kind of into that witchy shit , so
background
camila was the second child born to marianne allen, though her older brother has a different father. her brother was born when marianne was just seventeen, running away from her perfect new hampshire home and her perfect new hampshire family to raise the child with his father in a small town in south carolina
they had planned to run away and meet in south carolina , though the father never showed . so it was just marianne and this baby boy , but it wasn’t long before marianne found herself pregnant again , another local farmer boy , thomas thayer
so camila was born , and it was the four of them in this tiny home that barely fit all of them , and marianne was just shy of twenty and didn’t even want to be a mother , so life wasn’t all that great for the thayers .
camila’s mother was never very maternal , and her father was a drunk . he didn’t truly love marianne , nor did he love camila very much . he especially didn’t love her brother , who wasn’t even his child .
camila and her brother stuck together , a dynamic duo of sorts . they were best friends and had each other’s backs through anything . at night , when they could hear their parents fighting , they would cuddle up in bed together and talk about their happiest thoughts , the lives they wished they had , so on .
at seven , thomas thayer decided to call it quits . he left in the night without so much as a goodbye , and though he had never felt particularly close to camila , camila felt close to him . it was her father after all , and she craved his attention , his validation .
at nine , her grandparents in new hampshire were finally able to locate them . getting cps involved , they were granted full custody of the kids , and camila and her brother were taken away from their mother and put into a new , grandeur home with these old people they’d never even heard about before . it was not a welcomed change , though it would soon be .
the first thing she discovered at her grandparent’s home was her grandfather’s library . he was a retired professor at dartmouth , and had an entire room full of literary classics , academic journals , and other first edition books . as a child , camila was not allowed in without his supervision , though she often snuck in without permission .
she was put into private school where she was expected to achieve excellent marks and commit to extracurriculars , though she was so behind in her schooling due to the underprivileged education system she’d faced in south carolina , that it took her a while to get back on track . though once she did , she excelled . they found that camila was incredibly gifted in creative and liberal subjects , such as art , english , and history . still , she excelled in math and science , though had to put forth a little more effort .
she took up horseback riding and tennis , but nothing could replace the comfort she felt in cuddling up with a good book from her grandfather’s library , in front of their grand fire place with a mug of her grandmother’s hot cocoa , or playing the piano in her grand parents’ grand hall
though she lived a life of luxury , her and her brother spent two - four weeks every summer going down to visit their mother . each year , as she got older , she began to realize just how broken her mother was , and truly began to understand why her grandparents felt the need to take her children from her .
camila , though not necessarily a tomboy , had always surrounded herself with boys . all her best friends were boys , and she hardly ever got along with her girl classmates . perhaps it had something to do with growing up so close to her brother , and often befriending his friends .
when she was sixteen , though , her guy friends started seeing her differently . boys , in general , began to really notice her . this was the first time she realized she was closed off to love . she had a boyfriend during her junior year of high school , and on the night he told her he loved her , she simply responded “ no , you don’t . ”
anyway ! getting accepted into columbia was a dream come true , though no one was all that surprised . she’d also been accepted to dartmouth ( her grandparents’ alma mater and where he taught , and where he’d urged her to go ) and brown , but something about new york city was enticing . she’d always lived in small towns , under twenty thousand people , and moving to a big city with millions seemed like a nice change of pace
she has made one close knit group of friends during her freshman year , though she’s still only a sophomore and we know how those things change . nonetheless , if you weren’t one of those people , you probably wouldn’t know who she was , because she didn’t get out much ( mayhaps she was seen around campus though )
wanted connections !
alright enough about camila if you got through all that i’m so sorry KJAHKSJGH but ! i have quite a few connections i’d love
the close friends she made freshman year . these would be pretty much the only people camila hung out with last year , and though things can change , the only people she’ll hang out with at the start of this year . i imagine this group to be mostly guys ( though not necessarily exclusively ) , because she tends to befriends boys as opposed to girls ? i’d say about 5 people ! ( 1 / 5 )
her number one best friend . this would have to be a male or male presenting muse , as camila has never found herself that close to a girl , reasons unknown tbh , she just gets along with boys better IDK inspo : ( x , x )  ( 0 / 1 )
close girl friend . that being said , every girl still needs her girlies . so she’d be fairly close to this girl , even if she doesn’t open up that much , perhaps the girl feels like she can open up to camila ? this can all be plotted out ! i feel like camila is a v good secret keeper , she doesn’t talk all that much so you can expect her to keep anything safe lmao ( 0 / 1 )
toxic relationship . sooo tbh this gotta be with a muse who is not a good guy , because camila is not that good of a gal ? . i see this being sort of on again , off again ? i’m not sure if either of them truly feel anything for one another , but they must feel something that keeps them going back to one another . though camila doesn’t really open herself up to love , she’s not necessarily closed off from relationships . ya girl needs to be satisfied and she ain’t the type to sleep around ok ? anyway i see them being really possessive of one another and having p explosive fights , definitely not right for each other and yet !!! also just to be clear , i see them as mutually bad for one another it’s not one sided ! just give me this angst pls . inspo : ( x , x , x , x ) ( 1 / 1 ) lukas tozer
unrequited crush . this would be unrequited on the other muse’s behalf . open to m/f/nb and whether or not camila knows there is a crush there can be plotted out ! basically this just goes along with the hc that camila is very mysterious and allurring from afar , and that those who don’t know her all that well tend to be drawn to her and a lot of times will romanticize her ? but also for extra angst i am possibly thinking that the two are v close and camila does know and won’t let them like her buT we can figure it all out . lmao .  anyway ya inspo : ( x , x , x  , x ) ( 0 / 1 )
also just general plots i’d love to see : someone she tutors in english or journalism or literature anything regarding that sort of subject , bad influence / someone determined to get her out of her shell ,  enemy plots !! gimme girls who think she’s a snob or boys who think she’s a bitch or everything in between , study buddies , girl crushes because camila is bi and thinks every girl is pretty , give me anything under the sun tbh i’m open to so much

@rejectory has requested the fucked up journalist.
your own house growing up (it wasn’t ever a home, was it? people had to make it feel that way) wasn’t even as big as this. but the vergers are old meat and so are you, after all, or so was the crellin family (sometimes, even for how your heart aches whenever you look at amma, you’re glad you’re a preaker, even though that’s not much different). you might’ve been raised that way, but you’re certain you don’t have anything left of that you. might’ve existed for a brief second, maybe in the days of cheer, but it never stuck with you long.
(you don’t think parts of adora you hate her you hate her, mama are too clear in you, but damned if you’re not fuckin’ terrified of them. sometimes your hands are soft and you remember tucking amma in and then you remember your skin singing like it used to, the way you hadn’t wanted it to anymore, the way you thought you’d gotten rid of. the word blood throbs just once somewhere on your chest.)
it smells like lilacs here, and that’s not surprising to you. you grew up around stockyards, and while you figure it might always smell like death, it doesn’t. goes to show, sometimes, there are good things even amidst the trash.
the great part about big places like this is i’m sorry, i got lost is your back-pocket excuse. the smell of horses, however? that’s inescapable. the stable’s the ornate kind of thing you think adora would swoon over and then remark backhandedly about over mimosas unreasonably early in the morning.
you are looking for margot verger-- or her brother mason, but you’re really less curious about him. you needed a big assignment, and this is enough of one. it took you hours to convince curry into it.
you’re not really sure where the front door is, but you are sure it’s somewhere, so what does a little looking around hurt?
