2023 Fic Year in Review
Total number of completed stories: One fic and two ficlets
Total word count: 30,066 for the fic and about 2,700 words in ficlets
Fandoms written in: BBC Sherlock
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?
Less. So much less. The past few years have been terribly challenging for me. I won't delve too deeply into personal issues, but we've been enduring the painful decline and slow loss of a beloved family member. There's been a significant financial and emotional burden that my family has shouldered as a result of this (on top of typical work/life stress), and it's been very hard to think about writing when each day feels like survival.
That said, writing is my outlet and my preferred form of stress relief, so I try to eke out some time just to maintain some semblance of my own sanity.
What’s your own favorite story of the year?
There's really not any competition this year, so Nothing to Celebrate wins by default. :)
(I am very pleased with how it turned out. There are a lot of complicated emotions at work beneath the plot, and I'm particularly proud of some of the dialogue where characters are talking past each other and not quite saying what they mean.)
Did you take any writing risks this year?
Nothing to Celebrate is the first time that I've written an unapologetically evil Mary Morstan. I like to think I pulled it off!
Do you have any fanfic goals for the new year?
I plan to finish up my current WIP, Time in a Bottle, early in 2024. Much of the last two chapters are already drafted and just need some retooling.
Beyond that-- I have a few WIPs languishing in my WIP folder that I'm absolutely dying to get back to. One is an angst monster of an amnesia story. The other is a cracky AU fusion. Both will get written even if it kills me.
And I'd like to do more ficlets. They keep my writing skills sharp.
Most popular story of the year?
Nothing to Celebrate! I was delighted by the reception this one received.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Out of the three (completed) things I posted this year? Probably Distraction, an angsty little ficlet where a captor forces John to hit Sherlock. It didn't get much love compared to some of my other ficlets, maybe because of the subject matter. It's also posted here if you prefer reading on Tumblr
Most fun story to write:
I had a big smile on my face revisiting the storm chaser boys in my ficlet After The Storm.
Biggest disappointment:
Not writing more. But it is what it is.
Biggest surprise:
How warm and welcoming and passionate this fandom remains, even after all these years. I love you all.

Happy Birthday, PinkSPARKL!
Normally, when I see it’s a Redacted fandom member’s birthday, I send along this headcanon list and invite the recipient to choose any wolfboi celebration(s) you like. @pinksparkl foiled my plan, because she saw and reblogged that post a few days ago, so the surprise would be gone. Instead, I wrote this little headcanon that imagines Vincent cat-sitting Nyx, the cat Angel used to share with their ex, Michael. (Sidenote: SPARKL wrote a wonderful story featuring Nyx and how she makes her way back to Angel and David.)
Vincent was not Angel’s and David’s first choice for a cat-sitter. Not by a longshot. Milo was their typical go-to, but he and Sweetheart had a family member’s wedding to attend that weekend, which also meant Marie was unavailable. Asher was always down to help out, but he was wrapped up with staying at his apartment because a plumber was coming to fix the leaky sink. Thankfully, William Solaire (also a cat owner) was happy to oblige his friends with looking after Nyx so that David and Angel could travel to visit Angel’s family for a few days. Unfortunately, a Solaire clan member had an emergency come up on the day Angel and David left, but he assured Angel and David that Vincent was more than capable of handling the task.
Nyx warily greeted this stranger with sniffs and stares from the across the room. Vincent made sure to close the door quickly, not wanting to lose David’s cat within a minute of arriving at the house. Vincent wasn’t sure what to expect from Nyx. Bob, William Solaire’s cat, was a bit temperamental and fussy with Vincent, but to be fair, Bob was temperamental and fussy with most everyone, so that wasn’t really much of a gauge. Vincent had very little experience with cats. In his human life,  he had only ever had dogs. Nevertheless, he certainly didn’t want to let his maker or his friends down by refusing to take care of Nyx. Vincent stared right back at Nyx, feeling as though her bottomless green eyes could’ve put him into a trance. “Um, hi,” he said awkwardly, taking a step towards Nyx, who responded by leaping onto the back of the couch. “I’m Vincent.” He stuck his hand out for Nyx to smell him. “Vincent Solaire,” he added.
“Mew.” Nyx pawed at Vincent’s hand, as if to greet him with a formal handshake. “Mew mew.”
“Nyx Shaw,” Vincent translated, visibly relaxing when the midnight-colored cat pressed her forehead into his palm, all while softly purring. “Nice to meet you, too,” the vampire proudly breathed. “We’re going to have a fun few days altogether, aren’t we?”
Four days later, when Angel and David returned to their house, they walked in to find Vincent sprawled out on the couch with Nyx napping on his belly. He waved and smiled, but said nothing, pointing at Nyx’s sleeping form. Angel and David put their bags down, noting that Nyx was apparently now the proud owner of two new scratching posts, three new baskets, four fuzzy blankets, enough jingly balls to fill a ball pit, a stack of gourmet cat treat pouches, and cardboard boxes of every shape and size.
David thanked Vincent for his help, wondering how in the world all these new items would fit neatly into the house. Angel assured Vincent that he was welcome to visit Nyx whenever he wanted.

‘No, no, it’s okay….’ I said. ‘I don’t know what he was thinking! Nearly 40 and still carrying on like he’s 10!’ Nora sighed. ‘They’re all as bad as one another,’ I chuckled as I remembered watching the snowball fight my husband had been having early this morning with his friends. All party members were married and some even had kids but no. Out in our vast backyard, you’d never know there were actual kids around as the men divided up into teams hell-bent on getting each other as wet and frozen as possible. And it had all been fun and games until Lamar had run off the grass and onto the icy stone patio and gone over on his ankle. The boys had laughed but seeing that he was actually hurt Elvis had insisted that he get checked out at the hospital. Which is why Nora was ringing.
‘Well the doc’s gonna patch him up but he’s not gonna be able to walk on it for a bit at least not without crutches,’ Nora said, ‘so he’s not gonna be able to do it.’ ‘Don’t worry about it,’ I said. ‘He feels awful about letting ya down,’ she said. ‘Well he always does an amazing job but he’s no good to us hobbling about,’ I chuckled, ‘I’m sure it’ll be fine, we’ll sort something out. Just come for the party.’ ‘You sure?’ she said. ‘You didn’t think you’d be banished did you?’ I said rolling my eyes, ‘I’m sure if we station him on the couch with a beer in hand he’ll be fine.’ ‘Yeah, I bet,’ she giggled, ‘I’ll let him know and we’ll be over at six.’ ‘See you then, bye,’ I said getting a goodbye in return. With a sigh, I placed the receiver back in its place. ‘What’s up?’ Jerry said as I did. We were standing in the kitchen putting the finishing touches to the food for tonight. It was for our annual Christmas Party a feat I loved putting together. It was a night of food, booze, family and friends. The kids were even included in the earlier part. Santa would visit and give them all a present each before they’d get to camp out in the basement watching Christmas movies. That was when the adult party started.
It was a bit merrier. A bit lewder. But it still shared that special something. It was something I was immensely proud of. Except this year had a snag. Our Santa, Lamar for the other 364 days of the year, was no longer in play. ‘Lamar’s sprained his ankle,’ I said continuing to pipe on the cookies I had been sorting out before the phone had rung. ‘Shit,’ Jerry said, ‘he did take quite the tumble.’ ‘Yeah well he sure paid the price for it,’ I said, ‘I mean I don’t know what’s worse the injury or having to tell the doctor he did it in a snowball fight.’ ‘Yeah let’s hope he thought of a cover,’ Jerry chuckled as he wrapped a plate of chicken wings with cling film. ‘Well we’re gonna have to think of one too,’ I said, Jerry’s brows knitted together with confusion, ‘we don’t have a Santa now.’ ‘Oh yeah,’ Jerry said.
As he did Elvis entered with Red, Sonny and Joe trailing behind him. He came to the counter I was standing at and placed his hand on my hip, pressing a kiss to my temple.
‘Everything ready?’ I asked looking up at him. ‘Yes honey,’ he said with a smirk before he went to grab a coke out of the fridge. The boys stationed themselves around the kitchen looking at the various plates of food already ready to be laid out in the dining room. ‘Good,’ I smiled, ‘because we’ve got a problem.’ ‘Oh?’ Elvis said coming back to me. As he pinched a cookie off the plate I smacked his hand and took it off him, placing it back on the tray. ‘Behave,’ I said warningly earning a smirk from him. ‘God damn dictatorship,’ he mumbled making me roll my eyes. ‘What’s the problem?’ Red asked ignoring us. ‘Lamar’s sprained his ankle,’ Jerry said. ‘I knew he took that fall hard,’ Elvis said, ‘he alright?’ ‘Nora said he’s fine but it means we haven’t got a Santa for tonight,’ I said. ‘Shit yeah,’ Red said, ‘well I’m sure we can find someone to replace him.’ ‘Yeah baby, don’t worry we’ll sort it,’ Elvis said looking at me with a small smile. I turned to look up at him with a hesitant expression.
‘I was hoping you’d say that,’ I said with a smile. ‘What me?’ he baulked. ‘Well..’ ‘Why would I wanna dress up as Santa?’ he scoffed. ‘Come on EP,’ Red chuckled, ‘we always have a Santa.’ ‘Yeah and it’s always Lamar,’ he said icily. ‘Please baby,’ I said wrapping my arms around his middle. He held me but his face was still contorted in a scowl which was directed towards the boys. I moved one of my hands to his front and tiptoed my fingers up his chest until I was touching his chin, forcing him to look at me, ‘please?’ ‘Why me? Why can’t one of these clowns do it,’ he sighed. ‘Because it’s gotta be perfect,’ I reasoned. ‘Yeah Santa’s rosy-cheeked right?’ Joe said, ‘we send Red in there they’re gonna be thinkin’ Santa’s never seen the sun.’ ‘And we can’t have a Santa that’s shorter than the kids so Joe’s out,’ Red quipped earning a chuckle from Elvis and Jerry. As the pair tussled a little I looked back at Elvis capturing his attention. ‘See? They’re not my big strong Santa,’ I smirked, ‘the one who’d do anything for me right?’ ‘Just the once right?’ he said skeptically. I nodded. He closed his eyes for a moment and then nodded, ‘fine.’
I clapped my hands together and pulled him in for a kiss. Looks like tonight wasn’t going to be a bust after all.
✵✵✵
The night was going smoothly. Despite the blizzarding snow outside the fire crackled accompanying the holiday records that played through the air. Conversations were working alongside each other, punctuated by the giggles and laughter of the kids who were playing in and out of the living and dining room. Our guests were enjoying themselves and I rested against the archway of our living room so was I. I sipped my glass of champagne and smiled watching it all happen. Then I noticed a figure at the top of the stairs. I looked up to find Red moving at a pace down them, giving me a look as he reached the bottom.
‘Hey,’ I said grabbing a hold of Lisa and Sandy as they ran by me, ‘come on everyone in the living room.’ ‘Why Mama?’ Lisa said looking up at me with those big blue eyes. ‘Because I think I hear something,’ I said scooping her up and going to sit on the couch. She sat on my knee, her hand on my cheek as she looked around the room. All of the other kids were in the living room now, some clung to parents who had told them to behave and others congregated in the middle questioning why they had been told to stop playing. ‘What is it?’ Cindy, Joe’s daughter said. ‘I hear it too,’ Sonny said. ‘Me too,’ Jerry chuckled as the faint sound of bells echoed outside the room. The room erupted into furious whispers as all the kids exuded excitement. A couple of them scouted out the stairs and spotted ‘Santa’ coming down them.
‘Is it really Santa Mama?’ Lisa whispered as she peered out into the hallway. ‘It really is baby,’ I said as Elvis appeared at the living room entryway. ‘Hello boys and girls,’ he boomed in a voice unlike his own. Despite his reluctance, he was done up to the nines. His suit was immaculate and the only telltale sign it was him was those shining blue eyes I adored so much. A chorus of ‘hello Santas’ rang back at him. He moved to sit in the chair we had stationed by the tree as some of the bolder kids congregated around him. Lisa stayed on my knee, however, still a little wary.
‘Now, I’ve been told there are lots of good girls and boys here is that right?’ Elvis said receiving excited shouts from the kids, ‘well that’s very good because I happen to have lots of presents here for those boys and girls!’ Elvis leaned into his sack and pulled out a neatly wrapped parcel. ‘Debbie?’ he asked looking for Joe’s little girl. She pushed through the crowd with a beaming smile and walked right into him as he handed her her gift, ‘here you go sweetheart.’ ‘Thank you Santa,’ she said taking it from his hands and running to her Dad so she could open it, allowing Elvis to dive back inside his sack for the next kid. This had become one of my favourite parts of the party. Though admittedly it had started as a way to get the kids to migrate downstairs I had now come to love it. I picked out presents for each kid, ensuring it was something they really wanted. Santa’s sack would also appear later in the night though those presents were less about the perfect gift and more about what would get a laugh.
He moved through each present presenting it to every child who ripped them open with enthusiasm. Lisa watched from my knee as every kid got a gift. As he got to the end of the sack she looked up at me worry dancing across her young features.
‘That seems to be it,’ Elvis said, tying his sack back up. ‘Uh, Santa?’ I said catching his attention and sliding Lisa off my knee, ‘could you please check again? Just in case?’ ‘I don’t think it’ll be any different but okay,’ Elvis said, winking at me as he did an exaggerated look into his bag, ‘oh, I seem to have missed one! This must be for you.’
Lisa turned around to look at me and I nodded encouraging her to go up to him. She walked tentatively forward until she was stood between his legs. ‘And what’s your name little girl?’ he asked. ‘Lisa Marie,’ she said, chewing on her finger nervously. ‘And have you been a good girl this year?’ he asked with a smile. Lisa nodded enthusiastically, ‘well then this must be for you.’ ‘Thank you Santa,’ she said leaning in to give him a kiss on the cheek. Elvis stroked her cheek, pulling back as she ran to me, her gift in her hands.
‘Look what Santa got me Mama!’ she said. ‘Woah baby!’ I said, ‘we’ll open it in a minute okay?’ ‘Kay,’ she giggled, clutching it to her chest. Elvis stood up and swung his bag over his shoulder. ‘Merry Christmas! I hope you enjoy your presents,’ he said walking away and waving as he did so. The kids waved goodbye though there was certainly less interest in him now they all had their various gifts. I let Lisa open her present, a doll she had been eyeing for months, and then Joan and I shepherded the kids downstairs to the basement which had been decked out for a slumber party. Once they were all situated and the TV was up and running we returned to the party.
Fortunately, the wrapping paper and boxes had been kindly cleared away and the music was back on full volume. Though as I looked around I noticed something missing. Elvis. I checked the clock which told me I had only been gone ten minutes though I was sure it wouldn’t have taken him that long to get changed.
‘Where is he?’ I asked Jerry, who was now sitting on the chair Elvis had vacated. ‘He’s not come back down yet I don’t think,’ he shrugged. I nodded and headed to find him.
He was in our bedroom, sitting on our bed, though I didn’t spot him at first. The lamps were off, the only source of light coming from the bathroom door being open a crack and the low moonlight coming in through the window. I flicked on the lights  and moved to the window to shut the curtains.
‘Lisa can’t believe she got that doll! Like she hasn’t been asking for it for the past two months!’ I chuckled yet as I turned around my face fell. He was sitting on the bed still in the Santa suit, though the beard and hat were gone now and his jacket was unbuttoned leaving him partially shirtless. He wasn’t looking at me though, his head was hung as if he had the weight of the world on his shoulders, ‘everything okay?’ ‘Why wouldn’t it be?’ he said with a half-hearted snort. He stood up now, shirking his jacket off and throwing it on the bed. ‘Baby-’ I started but he cut me off. He threw his hands on his hips and looked at me. ‘Why me?’ he said. ‘What?’ ‘Why did you pick me to be Santa?’ he asked. ‘Because it’s our party,’ I said not knowing what he was getting at. ‘So?’ ‘So I wanted it to be good. And I know you’d be good at it,’ I said, confused by his line of questioning, ‘I mean didn’t you see the way those kids looked at you?’ ‘You mean they were happy you managed to find some other fat guy right?’ he spat. ‘What?!’ I asked perplexed. ‘That’s why it had to be me right? Jerry’s too well built, Joe’s too scrawny,’ he said, ‘better get your fat husband to do it.’ ‘That’s not true!’ I protested. ‘No, I’m just you’re ‘big strong Santa’ right?’ he said shaking his head. He sat down on the bed, hanging his head again. My heart squoze tighter in my chest.
I’d upset him. It wasn't the first time. He was a sensitive man I knew that but I didn’t know he was feeling like this. That however unintentional my words were they’d hurt him. I took a moment, trying to think of what to say, before I moved to stand between his legs, perching on his knee as I forced him to look up at me. The mirth and merriment he had been wearing not ten minutes ago was gone, replaced with sadness.
‘I’m sorry,’ I said quietly, ‘I didn’t mean to upset you…I didn’t notice.’ ‘You didn’t notice I’m the second fattest guy around here now right?’ he scoffed. I placed my hand on his cheek and stroked it gently with my thumb. ‘I didn’t notice that’s how my words might sound….but I didn’t pick you to be Santa because of that. Hell if it was just about getting someone to fit in the damn suit I’d have taped two cushions to Billy and have at it,’ I said. Elvis breathed a small chuckle.
‘I picked you because you have all the qualities I wanted. Kind, loving, mischievous,’ I said with a smile that he returned, the glint in his eye coming back just a tad, ‘I knew those kids would love you as Santa. And I was right. You made them all feel special, especially Lisa. You made her feel like the most important little girl in the world. You made memories she’s gonna have forever.’ ‘You think so?’ he asked quietly, resting his head against mine. ‘I know so,’ I said, ‘because that’s how you make me feel every single day.’ ‘Even looking like this,’ he said moving a hand that was around me so he could gesture to the slight gut protruding over his belt. I placed my hand on his tummy making him drop his gaze. ‘Are you as skinny as the day I fell in love with you? No. Do I love you just as much as I did then? Absolutely. I love you for you Elvis no matter what. Hell, I’m not exactly the same as when we met. She may have been tiny when she was born but my hips ain’t ever going to be the same after that kid of yours,’ I chuckled. ‘Still gorgeous,’ he mumbled into my temple. ‘If you think that then why don’t you think I feel the same about you?’ I said pulling back. He sighed, ‘I meant it when I said you’re my big strong Santa. Because I don’t see those as bad things. It’s not some code word, well, if it is it’s only good things. I like that you’re strong. I like that when you wrap your arms around me I feel safe. That’s what I meant.’
He stayed quiet for a moment and then nodded finally looking at me. I placed my hand on his cheek and pressed a kiss on his forehead before I rested mine against it.
‘I love you,’ I said. ‘Love you too,’ he whispered kissing me tenderly. After a moment or so I pulled back and slipped off his knee until I was kneeling in between his legs. He raised an eyebrow as I placed my hands on his chest. My words might not have fixed everything but I was determined to get a smile back on his face.
‘You know I realised something when we were downstairs,’ I said absent-mindedly tracing my fingers along his clavicle. ‘Oh yeah?’ he mused. ‘Yeah,’ I said. ‘What’s that?’ he said. ‘I realised I’m not gonna be on the nice list this year,’ I said with an exaggerated sigh. ‘Why’s that honey?’ he said, his lip curling up in a smirk. ‘I don’t think you’re allowed to be if you’ve been having dirty thoughts about Santa,’ I giggled. Elvis chuckled, ‘oh yeah? Like what?’ ‘I think it’s probably best if I show you,’ I said with a smirk as I pushed him back until he was resting against the bed on his elbows, looking down at me as my fingers fiddled with the black belt of his costume. ‘Maybe this whole Santa thing ain’t so bad after all.’

Ok so, I've basically just wrote an entire Megica Exes fanfic in my shower, and I wanted to write down just the basics in case I go back to this someday. (By the way, this is for @mari-bon since they asked for my explanation so kindly)
Meg and Chica were like best friends during middlechool, and as they grew older they started crushing on each other, and eventually they started dating
Meg's dream was always to have a Band and when she shared that with Chica she totally supported the idea and even offered to be the first member to join, however, at the time (maybe around 8th grade) Chica didn't know how to play any instrument
Meg decided she would teach her How to play bass, since that's the only instrument she knew how to play (If anyone's wondering, she learned it all by herself. She found an old bass on the trash and restored it with Spring's help)
Both of them put out fliers around the school motivating people to join their band. Then one day during luch, two people approached them, a red haired girl with blue eyes and a boy with blue hair streaks and greeb eyes, they were Toddy and Bon, who were eachother's childhood best friends
They wanted to join the band, and soon enough they were in. A few months later Meg told the rest of the band that she befriended a shy blond girl she meu during luch, named Joy, and she wanted to join the band as well
From the begining, Meg made it clear that she wanted for the band's first show to include Chica, but after sometime, that was not possible. Chica still hadn't learned enough to be able to keep up with them
And since she didn't want to make them lose big opportunities, she said that she wouldn't mind doing the backstage things for them
She always had a kind of inferiority complex so the moment she saw all of them play toghether, she throught that they wouldn't need her on the band. And after their first show, Los Toys got a lot of job opportunities at local pizzarias and kid's birthday parties, that meant they were a lot busier, making Meg spend less time with her girlfriend
It's not like Meg didn't want to hang out with Chica, it's just that she got really carried away with the money she was receiving, after all, she was finally able to help her brother financialy
And after some time, the girls started to drift away. But only when Meg realised that, It was too late
After months of them not seeing each other, Chica called off their relationship, wich Meg was not surprised about, but insted mad
"If Chica's unhappy, why didn't she talk to me? Why would she be afraid to talk to me?" That's the only thing she could think, and she couldn't imagine why she wanted to break up
Meg was finally being helpfull to her brother, so why wasn't Chica proud of her?
But it's not like Chica explained what was in her head, how she thought she was useless and annoying to all her girlfriend's new friends
The break up was a mess, Chica wouldn't explain why she wanted to break up and that only made Meg mad
At the end of the day, Meg left confused and angry at her now ex-girlfriend and Chica was not much better than her. She wasn't sure if she had done the right thing, It boa It was too late
Meg didn't know how to handle all of her emotions, so she went streight to Joy's house, looking for emotional support
They talked for hours and since Joy had only heard Meg's side of the story, she thought Chica was being ridoculous. So being the the dumb teenagers that they are, Meg started to ocassionally pick on Chica during school
And I think that's it! That's how Megica became bitter ex-girlfriends in my AU
Sorry if this was too long, but I really enjoy writing for any fandom that I'm in
(Also If anyone want's more headcanons, then hit me up)

Sorry to bring this thing up again, but I just can't get over that pointless comment about Brian, either. "He loves to hear himself talk." Oh, you mean he actually cares about things? That he's passionate? Come on. And I could be reading too much into it, but... We all know that Brian has been way more vocal about LGBTQ+ rights than this person's fave, for instance. Trying to make Brian's passionate "speech" out to be nothing more than conceit is not only incredibly disingenuous; it also comes across as dismissive in favor of other people associated with the band.
Are you trying to kill me, anon? Lmao
So, yes, I do think one of the reasons why people see Brian as full of himself in general is because he very easily gets lost in his head and rambles about what he’s passionate about, and people get very annoyed with people who are earnest and go on about their interests: look at the entirety of cringe culture. It’s making judgments against people’s character for being too passionate about the “wrong” subjects. Brian’s mom apparently described him to Anita as an absentminded professor, and yeah! That’s what he is, an intelligent ditz who doesn’t even realize when he’s been talking too much, and as someone with a very similar experience lol, I sympathize with that and think he’s misunderstood in that respect.
For the rest? I can’t say what’s going on in someone else’s head, but I do think the fandom as a whole does not take Brian’s statements on gay rights and HIV/AIDS advocacy seriously for two reasons: 1.) they think he’s arrogant ^ and apply bad faith to his personality trait of speaking at length and passionately about things he cares about. They don’t see his statements as earnest, but performative, because people are abnormal about him. 2.) People don’t like to admit that no one directly involved with the band has spoken more about lgbt rights and HIV/AIDS than Brian. This is not an opinion, it is a fact that if you compile a list of statements made by the band and their roadies and managers on what they have said about the lgbt community and HIV/AIDS, Brian’s section would be the longest on the list. I think people get uncomfortable with this because they wish their fave were as outspoken, but…that’s not Brian’s fault lol.
It’s not Brian’s fault he said he was proud of how Freddie dealt with his sexuality struggles in 1991 and disclosed his AIDS test to The Sun in 1992 while Ratty laughed about being openly homophobic to Freddie and his gay friends in 2011. It’s not Brian’s fault he said he knew Freddie struggled to find himself (but never undermined his sexuality) while Mack said he thought Freddie might go back to Mary one day. It’s not Brian’s fault he’s always used the word “gay” to describe Freddie’s sexuality and said Freddie didn’t mince his words while Phoebe decided to later lie that Freddie never labeled himself. It’s not Brian’s fault he asserted Freddie was very responsible when moving from one relationship to the next while Mary said Freddie “became a gay” and stopped living his “bisexual lifestyle” to save her from getting AIDS (implying, of course, that Freddie knowingly gave it to men). It’s not Brian’s fault he’s the only member of the band who publicly reflected upon Freddie’s struggles as a gay man and thinks it influenced his music sometimes. It’s not Brian’s fault that the defense of HIV/AIDS victims in the one week later interview basically solely came from him.
There’s a reason why he got the ally award lol, and sure, it’s not a competition—but people very clearly think it is and downplay his vocal support as a result, because why else would they act like all his statements don’t exist while attributing imaginary support to other people associated with the band?

She was a devoted mother, and always planned to tell Joanna more about her father at some point, but that day came sooner than expected when she fell gravely ill in 1996 and she asked Sonya to track down Sam, not wanting Joanna to be without a parent. She recovered and became friends with Sam again, but was devastated to find out he was killed on a job, as she still loved him. Since then, she has focused on her family and tried her best to make sure Joanna gets a legitimate job, not wanting her to go down the same path as her father.

which obscure Media would u recommend to another empty fandom collector such as yourself?
You ask an intriguing question! I mean, there is so just so much to choose from and I have no idea where your interests lie to guide you better. So here are all the tiny fandoms I am proud to have been too late to join or remain the only member of (in a variety of media):
-The Engineer Trilogy is a book series by KJ Parker that has, as far I know, no fandom at all. It’s just me and a thousand fic ideas I will never really finish because no one will ever read them. Which is a shame because the series really lends itself to fanfiction (literally every single character is a poor little meow meow). But despite having no fandom, these books are probably objectively some of the best, most ambitious books ever written and the reason I maintain that the best books are never appreciated in their time.
-Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke is the other best book of all time that I can’t get anyone to read because they’re just not ready. It at least has a small fandom because they made a BBC miniseries of it a few years ago that was actually quite decent and had the added benefit of casting some very attractive actors. Definitely worth a watch and if you like it, 100% worth the read (this book is my Bible)
-Laurie R. King, the Patron Saint of fanfiction, whose Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell series survived the great Mary Sue hate of the late 90s early 00s, and who is actually a wonderful author in her own right. She used to have her own very small fandom site where people posted fanfiction and art but not nearly enough and it’s not active (at least that I can tell; I came in - you guessed it - late)
-Deadwood, that will always be one million times better than Game of Thrones to me, never had the fandom Ian McShane it deserved. Again, late so idk if there was a lot going on for it at the time but it certainly didn’t leave behind much fanfic for us stragglers
-Labyrinth, which I hesitate to include here because its not obscure and truly does have an insane amount of fanfiction but its fandom is mostly old (like me) and inactive (tell me I’m wrong and point me in the right direction!). Probably because the movie isn’t very popular anymore. However, it’s a great example of a tiny half-dead fandom with more fanfiction than it knows what to do with (even I haven’t read through it all).
-Watchmen (the graphic novel, NOT the new series). This did get a nice little surge of fans with the movie that came out and was probably the only time in my life I was there waiting for it. Ah the glory days of soaking up Rorschach/Night Owl fanfics on the ground as they came out… but it’s dead now, the book very close to cancelled and the fans mostly in hiding. There’s still a good bit of great fic out there if you love angsty slash pairings
-and last but not least, if you’re interested in random fandom-light video games, I can recommend several World of Warcraft fanfics that are absolutely lovely (and only some of them are mine 😅). I write for one minor-ish character in a now out-of-date expansion, as do @shipping-through-eternity and @mousterian-writes and @mysdrym to name a few. But all of it is lovely in their own different styles and genres, so if you have need of a dying video game fandom in your life I highly recommend!
Let me know if any of that helps, or if you have any recommendations of your own!

Why do I do this to myself?
Sup everyone. Surprised to see me? Yeah I'm surprised to be posting. But as my head get slowly closer to exploding despite me doing everything that normally helps with my headaches? I thought I'd share a Miraculous hot take that I came up with a while ago but never actually shared. Warning. Spoilers and slight salt ahead.
Okay, so while I was trying to take a nap to hopefully rid myself of this headache, my mind went back over opinions I have come across on Tumblr and other sites as a sort of "yeah right, I'm not letting you sleep, have some month old anger instead". Specifically around Zoe Lee and how she's a Mary Sue.
Now. Three things piss me off about the term Mary Sue just on its own. Number one, it's more than likely being used incorrectly. Number two, it forever ruins a great sounding name (Mary Sue just sounds sweet to me and I would use for the kind neighbour next door if it wasn't for this) and three? Is used as an insult despite being EXACTLY WHAT SUPERMAN IS AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL WITH A GODDAMN NUKE SO COME AT ME!
pants Sorry. That always gets to me. Anyway, the term as it's applied to Zoe? Falls firmly in the first scenario. See, people call her a Mary Sue when in reality what they mean is "bland nice girl" so kind of like Mylene until Horrificator or Rose until Princess Fragrance where we actually saw more of their personality. I'd go further into what I mean but that's not the point of this.
No, the point is all the people who say Zoe has no reason to exist and to them I say. "She's a fictional character her reason is because the writers say so." But... I also agree. This is where the salt comes in because, had Miraculous not been stubbornly controlled by a bullying manchild incapable of receiving criticism, who also hates a teenage girl he made up to an extent that it's disturbing? Zoe wouldn't exist.
Now people have said that she was just a replacement for Chloe. And again I agree but not for the reasons they believe. Zoe is what Chloe should have become had Mr "nobody appreciates me so I'll put myself in the show telling them why they are idiots" actually followed through on the redemption arc. Yes I'm insulting him more than I have ever even mentioned him before. Why? Because I recently saw his tweets where he said Chloe wasn't abused because she has a father throwing money at her despite her mother rejecting her existence. Fuck. Him. Not to mention the ones where he basically calls us idiots for thinking Chloe was getting redeemed in the first place.
Anyway I'm getting off topic. What do I mean when I say Zoe is basically a redeemed Chloe? Well our first introduction to her in Sole Crusher shows she's capable of being a copy of Chloe, something she does because she just wants to feel loved by her family. We know from the whole Queen wasp thing that Chloe doubts her mother's love for her (something that is never mentioned again despite Audrey's opinion on Chloe never really seeming to change. Unless you want to count keeping her like some kind of mini me which is... Arguably worse and reminds me of how Chloe treats Sabrina) and it was believed by the fandom that Chloe acted the way she did because she wanted her mother to love her and be proud of her. But nope. She's just irredeemably evil. Despite being a 15 year old girl who still cuddles her bear and sucks her thumb for comfort when she's upset. Totally evil.
Grr... next. Point. Before I devolve into pointing out all the times Thomas Asshole showed he knew jackshit about characterisation.
Anyway. After Zoe realises that she'll never get her family's love in a way she's satisfied with she turns to her newfound friends for comfort cutting all attempts to please her mother. Something we expected Chloe to do. Then comes Queen Banana. Not only is Zoe given the bee miraculous (which I don't understand why people were surprised at, who else was gonna get it? Aurora? Marinette doesn't go far to pick new members. And if you say, "well they could always just fuse" you clearly don't understand the benefit to having another person for the Akuma to focus on.) But the way she got Chloe to keep the charm showed that she's capable of manipulating people. A skill we all thought Chloe would put be able to put to better use should she be redeemed. See Matt's Honey and Vinegar comic for a brilliant example of this.
Then we get to the major point in my mind. Something everyone (may be an exaggeration) had pegged for Zoe since she was introduced and that most theorised for Chloe as a potential explanation for some of her actions. Having feelings for Marinette. Now when this was confirmed it wasn't a surprise to me. It was so far from a surprise I was actually slightly disgusted that they chose Zoe to be the blatant one and not confirm Rose and Juleka or even Marc and Nathaniel. You can say it's obvious from how Rose and Juleka interact but Alya and Marinette act the same at times and they haven't known each other nearly as long. Or as intimately since Juleka kept Rose's illness a secret for who knows how long and that tore her to pieces every time it happened. I'm a dude. I'm so conditioned to see Yuri in female friendships that I've reconditioned myself to go the opposite way and assume it's just me being perverted. Do I believe Juleka and Rose are a couple? Yes. Will I call it canon? Not until I see a kiss, because they've definitely already confessed by now if it's true. Do I care if the writers confirmed it? No. Because JK Rowling said Dumbledore was gay and Hermione could be black. Only one of those is possible given what she's written, the other is clearly just an attempt to please this new era obsessed with inclusion at the expense of preestablished facts.
Dammit I got off topic again. Anyway, Chloe has been in the same class as Marinette for the past four years, something I remember joking about a while back calling Chloe out for being a stalker. But with her dad being Mayor, her fully using that to get what she wants even in school, and her focus on making Marinette miserable to such an extent that it's almost like Mari is the only target Chloe actually cares about hurting? Well I've seen enough "bully because I like you", "lash out because I'm confused" and "overcompensate because it's not normal/ my parents would disown me if they knew" tropes to suspect that they're might be a deeper meaning to why she does it.
Or at least that's what I would think. You know. If she wasn't completely and utterly evil. Between all the play heroes, tickle fights with Sabrina until they fall asleep, and being the sole person to throw off an Akuma before it takes hold because of their firm belief they are a hero. I mean how can you not see how evil and irredeemable she is when she has all that on her resumè?
sighs To finish up I want to make one thing clear. I like Zoe. In better hands I'm sure I'd have loved her even more but, even if she's just the replacement we were given so we'd shut up about Chloe, the fact is she's a good friend to Marinette (her lack of presence and late introduction means she hasn't done anything to annoy me like the others have), her design is amazing (reminds me of Equestria Girls Sunset Shimmer actually) and is basically the only one Chloe can't touch. The potential she brings to fanworks is absolutely staggering but in the show as it is? She's another pillar of support for Marinette. With the crap that girls gone through? That's more than enough for me.

Rules: Go to your published works on Ao3 and list the first fic you ever published there, the last fic you published, any fic that you wrote for a fandom/ship only once, your favorite fic you wrote in the fandom/ship that has the most works, the fic you wish more people read, the fic you agonized over the most, the fic that sprang fully formed from your mind without any effort, and a work you are proud of- for whatever reason.
I was tagged by @spartanguard and @wistfulcynic. Thank you so much ladies!!!!
First fic: True Love Song After being a member of fandom for nearly three years, and spending all that time swearing I'd never write, it took a lot of hand holding, encouragement, and cajoling from hollyethecurious and winterbaby89 to get me to actually post this thing...
Last fic: Into the Light my entry for this years CSSNS, inspired by the 1987 movie The Lost Boys, starring Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Dianne Wiest, and Edward Herrmann.
Only Once: All my fics are for Once, but I do have a few fics for other ships besides CS... A Family Affair series features the love stories of triplet sisters Emma, Regina, and Ruby, and their older brother David. Love Between the Pages is CS's story. Killian is a bestselling author that is writing a book on Emma's late husband Neal Cassidy, NASCAR darling killed on the track. He didn't plan on falling in love with her. Dance With the Gypsy is Ruby and Graham's story. She falls in love with Graham Humbert, the producer of her new Broadway show, Secrets. Clipping an Angel's Wings is Regina and Robin's story. Hollywood star Regina hires Robin to find and keep her safe from a stalker. And finally, David and Mary Margaret's story is told in A Spy Finds a Home. Dr. Mary Margaret Blanchard hires international spy David Nolan to find and save her parents who've been kidnapped by a terrorist organization.
Favorite fic for the fandom I've written in most: That is TOUGH... UGH!!!! That is REALLY tough!!!!!! Ok, you know what? I answered an ask from @kazoosandfannypacks a couple of weeks ago of my five favorite fics, and I couldn't even limit it to just five. So if you're really interested, you can find that ask and answer here. But I really couldn't pick just one between any of them, sorry, not sorry...
The fic I wish more people read: Is it fair to say all of them? 🤷🏻‍♀️ But that said, it's always thrilling whenever I get a notification that any of my fics gets a new like, kudos, or comment.
The fic I agonized over the most: Two fics immediately come to mind... Choices and Of Darkness, Vampires, and Soulmates. Choices because first, it was for wistfulcynic, and second, I had a very specific plan for how I wanted the fic to go. I wanted to include all the underrated CS canon Neverland moments that I adored, but also smut. And including all those canon moments in the fic meant that there was NO WAY in my mind that canon Emma would have approached Killian in that way. So it took me about a month to figure out how to keep all those canon moments and make the ending of the fic true to who they both were at that time in the show. ODVS I agonized over because it was the first fic I'd ever written that came completely out of my own head, from start to finish, no inspiration at all, and I had NO IDEA how hard it was to translate my vision onto the page. PLUS the fact that I had to actually connect the different time periods. And finally the level of historical detail I ended up including was just... 😳 oof... So yeah, I agonized over ODVS the most. It took me a full seven months of active writing and hollyethecurious and wistfulcynic about deserve co-writer status for everything they did to help me finish it.
The fic that sprang fully formed from my mind without any effort: Oh, that's easy! The Moon... Tells the Sea. @allons-y-to-hogwarts-713 shared a moodboard with me that she was working on for CSSNS20, and the full plot for a fic to go with it just poured out of me. She was almost as excited as I was for the fic, so I started writing. It ended up being a decent length one shot, but I think I had the whole thing written in 2-3weeks? Somewhere in there. Anyway, that was a fun one.
A fic that I'm proud of, for whatever reason: This one is pretty easy, too. Although the answer is kinda long... For someone who swore for years that she'd never write, the fact that I've published 39 fics in 4 1/2yrs makes me pretty proud. But that said, I'm probably most proud of the Family Affair series, linked above. I'm proud of it for a couple of reasons. First, that I was actually brave enough to really write it. The idea for the series came to me before I wrote my first MC, but given the fact that it was 4 different love stories, that would necessitate 4 different couples, plus the fact that we're a CS fandom and who from the CS fandom would be interested in reading a Red Hunter, OQ, or Snowing fic, the whole idea was pushed to the back of my mind for TWO YEARS before I actually started writing it. And the response BLEW ME AWAY!!! I'm eternally grateful for that! That's the first reason I'm proud. The second reason is that I remained true to my original vision of the interconnected stories of four siblings. I had several folks tell me over the course of the year I spent writing these fics that they'd love to see the stories as CS fics instead of the other siblings- particularly the OQ and Snowing fics. And as a reader, I completely get it. The plots of both of them would have been SO GOOD as CS fics, and I KNOW that I would have DEVOURED them both as such. But as the writer, I wanted the interconnected stories because of how much I loved the source material and the interwoven plot of the estrangement between the oldest and their father that I also wanted to tell. And again, I was stunned at the response I received for the other stories. The entire series is high up on my personal favorites list. In fact, I adore this universe so much, that I've written a Christmas fic set a year after David returns home and Regina and Robin were married that will be dropping on Christmas Day.
Thank you again for the tags, Kait and Saira!!! 😘
Now my turn to tag! @hollyethecurious @snowbellewells @winterbaby89 @whimsicallyenchantedrose @jrob64 @cs-rylie

This could go for either Mari or the Narrator but imagine dark room and markings just start glowing on them; lines of code in mari's case and arrows for the Narrator. Either its completely hidden when it's light or they are instead like white faint scarring on their body, almost invisible until certain lighting.

I beg to differ. I'd love to be a member of your fanclub. I've read many, many fics in this fandom and your writing is one of the greatest i've been given the chance to read and your characterization of louis plus your depiction of the larry dynamic is so good and certainly one that speak the most to me. You're also the only author for whom i can say i love every and each of your works, and reread all of them - some more than others, of the divine my most beloved - a few times. I'll bow down and gladly let the president title of your fanclub to mari, i don't like being under the spotlight anyway but don't you dare say that she'd be the only member :p I want a member card, and I'm surely not the only one. With love, reader, admirer and proud member of your fanclub xx

PART ONE // PART TWO // PART THREE
Though James had assured Sabrina not to worry about Sirius he couldn’t help but fret as time drew on without an appearance from his best mate. He didn’t return to the dormitory until well after curfew and when he did he rushed in, climbing into his bed without a word or chance for James to bob his head out of the curtains to check on him.
Not that he knew what he was going to say. So far his and Sabrina’s little ploy had not garnered the attention either of them wanted but now it was as if they were all playing a game of chicken, the train speeding towards them until one of them gave up the ghost and jumped out the way. That was why James made a resolution, if neither Sirius nor Lily had admitted anything by the end of the week he and Sabrina would have to knock this whole debacle on the head. Not that he got a chance to lay this decision on her though as he had to spend the following morning preparing for the Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw match. As he walked into the great hall he was met with a sea of red and gold from banners and flags to each house member's jumpers and scarves.  Even Sabrina had opted to adorn her house colours, though he doubted she’d be watching most of the game.
She offered him a smile as he sat down, and a cheery ‘good luck’ though she looked about as happy as he felt, the worry from last night still on his mind. Sirius didn’t appear until the end of breakfast, only scarfing down a piece of toast before he rose, already in his quidditch uniform, and headed to the door forcing James to finish up quickly so that they could walk down together. And despite neither of them speaking, other than to Peter who had hurried along to head down to the pitch with them though he’d be in the spectator stands, they managed to cinch a win. It was a tough game, with the Ravenclaw beaters intent on scuppering James solely though that was no surprise given how spectacularly he’d played. And he wasn’t too proud to admit that without his best friend he might not have been on such good form because even though he was barely speaking to him Sirius was still there blocking every player and bludger that came for his best pal.
Sabrina had watched the entire thing, nerves bubbling in her stomach as she watched the boys fly about like ants far above them. She’d fretted all night about Sirius, about the look on his face when he’d seen her kissing James. It looked wounded.
She hadn’t been sure about the reciprocation of his feelings before which was why she’d thought simply baiting him would work. But she should’ve known. Outside of the suave, debonair, painstakingly handsome teen was a sweet, sensitive man who cared deeply even if he pretended he didn’t. That was one of the things she adored in the first place. She’d bashed him for not being honest when she was just as guilty. So as Gryffindor claimed victory over the Ravenclaw she decided she’d end it, once the celebrations were done.
And of course Gryffindor went all out on the celebrations. After an outpouring of cheering and merriment on the pitch the students had been shepherded back to their common room, the Gryffindor’s wild with excitement, which was only amped as they found the common room now transformed for a party. Gold and red banners hung from the ceiling, music blared from a record player and food and drink gathered on every free table. There was a lot of recapping, a lot of congratulating from various students who came up to James beaming with house pride, and a lot of drinking which had Sabrina feeling merry even if she was thankful not to be noticed, the attention on her ‘beau’. Even Sirius had consented to cheering up, unable to shake the infectious joy of his team mates, though he stayed by the record player, using the role of DJ as means of avoiding his friends. That being said he had hugged James fiercely as they hit the ground of the pitch, congratulating one another before they were swept up in the crowd.
He was standing there now, beer in hand, chatting to Remus though admittedly he wasn’t paying much attention to the conversation, offering indifferent words or grunts where needed. Instead his eyes kept flicking to where James was sitting on the sofa, his mop of dark hair visible above the back of the couch where he was relaxed, a blonde sitting to his left, her head dangerously close to his friend as she kept leaning in to speak. With every glance his smile chipped away.  Fortunately his attention was diverted as a very merry seventh year drifted over to him, throwing his arms around his shoulders as he said, ‘you’re on the music right?’
‘Yeah,’ Sirius said, fighting the urge to shrug him off.
‘Taking requests?’ he asked, ‘it’s gettin’ a bit morbid in here.’
‘Go on then,’ Sirius said, hoping that would shirk him off.
‘Whack on We Are The Champions,’ he said, before strutting off back to his friends gathered in the corner watching them with anticipation. Sirius rolled his eyes but moved to flick through his stack of LPs anyway until he found the one he wanted, waving off the grumble of the crowd as the music died before being reignited again.
It was a slow melodic build that was harshened by the seventh year and his friends who immediately jumped in on the chorus as they realised their request had been heard. Soon enough every student in the room was joining in, revelling in their victory as they called out.
We are the champions  We are the champions  No time for losers  'Cause we are the champions of the World.
James was singing from his seat, his hand in Sabrina’s as the whole couch swayed to the music until they were suddenly pulled up by Marlene and Mary to dance beside the fireplace, huddled in a group of people. James was smiling so hard his cheeks were hurting until Mary smacked him on the arm and said, ‘you should make a speech!’
He glanced at her, finding her brown eyes wide and glinting as the idea set in. He knew it was just a drunken idea but that meant it was something she wouldn't let go of and apparently neither would others as Marlene said, ‘yeah go on Potter!’
‘Nah,’ James laughed, ‘I’m too sozzled for that.’
‘C’mon James,’ Peter encouraged from his other side.
‘Honestly I don’t know what to say,’ James said.
‘Since when do you opt out of a chance to gloat?’ Lily said scathingly from where she was still sitting, legs crossed over one another as she held her glass in hand, staring at it intently as an excuse not to look up.
James swallowed thickly and didn’t reply, his usual repertoire with her feeling empty and awkward now instead of the natural quipping it normally was.
‘Oh go on mate!’ Peter said, nudging his arm, ‘you’re the bloody reason we won.’
‘Yeah Potter!’ Mary said before calling the crowd to attention as she yelled, ‘speech!’
‘Guys,’ Sabrina said, seeing the discomfort in his eyes as all eyes turned to him, some muttering to others to get them to be quiet. James shook his head, waving her off as he knew there was no point fighting his friends.
‘Alright then,’ he said, clearing his throat and grabbing his half-empty bottle as he thought about what to say.
‘Shut it everyone!’ Mary decreed before gesturing that he had the floor. Sabrina slipped her hand into his free one and squoze it reassuringly, receiving a smile in return.
‘Well first I wanna congratulate the whole team for being on top form today,’ James said, looking around at the sea of happy faces. Sirius was standing at the back, watching him with a stony expression that separated him from the pack. Again James’ excitement dimmed but nevertheless he pressed on, unable to keep his adoring fans waiting, ‘without you lot we wouldn’t have won.’
‘Well you helped a bit,’ Peter mused, earning a laugh from everyone that made him beam with pride.
‘Yeah but it’s a team effort,’ James replied, gesturing to the wider crowd with his drink as he added, ‘same with you lot in the stands. Without you there wouldn’t be a reason to try as hard as we do.’
‘Not even to make sure Slytherin doesn’t win the cup?’ someone heckled from somewhere in the room.
‘Well I suppose that’s incentive in itself. Either way we still managed it so thanks and lets have some fun eh? Cheers,’ James said, raising his bottle as a chorus of replies rang out.
‘And let's get thoroughly rat-arsed,’ Mary shouted, earning a louder cheer as she pushed into the room, Marlene trailing behind her as they went for more drinks.
It was a move that knocked Sabrina into James, forcing him to grab onto her so that she wasn’t pulled along or spilled her own drink. She could feel his own bottle in his hand, nestled by her waist, her arm on his bicep as he’d steadied her. She smiled at him and to his disappointment he felt nothing. Nothing more than platonic happiness and looking at him Sabrina felt the same.
‘Well done,’ she said.
‘Thanks,’ James said, leaning further in so that she could hear him over the din of the next song on the record, ‘can’t believe they made me make a speech.’
‘Well at least if this quidditch thing doesn’t work out we know a public speaking career could be on the cards,’ she teased.
‘Oh yeah, next minister for magic I am,’ James grinned. Sabrina smiled back before she sighed. They were having fun but there was no point putting off the inevitable and so she said, ‘James look-’
But James wasn’t listening, he was too busy looking over her shoulder at where Lily had just slammed her drink down onto the coffee table and strode off, shoving through throngs of disgruntled students as she headed for the door. Sabrina whipped her head around and watched her go and before James could stop her she was heading out the portrait hole too, not slowing down as he called her name.
Sabrina had to give it to the girl she was fast. So quick that had she not followed her when she did she wouldn’t have seen the way she turned heading towards the courtyard. Given it was still spring and the night had drawn ever so close the air outside was cold and Lily’s shirt did nothing to protect her from the chill of it. She didn’t even know why she was out here; it wasn’t as if there was anywhere to sit down and she was liable to get cold quickly if she didn’t go back inside. All she knew was that she could no longer sit there watching Sabrina and James cosy up to one another. It made her insides spin and the room much to hot for her liking. That was why she had headed in the direction of a breeze, hoping the cool would clear her head. And it was working well until she heard her name called and turned to find Sabrina standing on the steps of the courtyard, Jamse a few steps behind him and Sirius coming into view just behind him. James glanced at his friend as he appeared but said nothing watching Sabrina and Lily instead.
‘What do you want?’ Lily said, folding her arms across her chest and holding her head high. Sabrina came a touch closer. In her Mary Janes they were almost the same height, looking at each other eye to eye as she stepped onto the cobbled stone of the courtyard.
‘Are you okay?’ Sabrina asked softly.
‘Fine,’ Lily said, glancing at James and tightening her jaw as she felt the sharp sting of tears in her eyes.
‘Are you sure? You run off pretty quickly,’ Sabrina reasoned.
‘Well sorry if I don’t want to watch you snog Potter’s face off,’ Lily said snarkily. At that Sabrina bristled, the original purpose of the prank blaring loud and clear. She had the floor now to just tell the truth and she couldn’t do it, more to the point she was angry at her because of it which was starting to get under her skin as she said, ‘well you were asking me to the other day. Why’s today any different?’
‘Why him?’ Lily shot back, taking Sabrina off guard.
‘What?’ she asked.
‘Out of all the people you could’ve picked to date you picked him,’ Lily said, sounding more upset than she intended, ‘why?’
‘Why not?’ Sabrina replied, ‘James is a good guy.’
‘Did you only just realise that? Because you could have anyone in the school and you picked him after years of being friends with him and no attraction and then boom one day you picked him!’ Lily said angrily.
‘So?’ Sabrina said.
‘It’s weird!’ Lily shouted. James and Sirius were watching on awkwardly now. It was getting more heated and though he couldn’t see Sabrina’s face he could see Lily's and she was getting more upset by the second. He was going to intervene, try and distract some attention to help them both calm down but Sirius put his hand on his arm, stopping him from moving forward. He wanted to hear this explanation.
‘Why do you care?’ Sabrina said, feeling the acceptance coming if she could just push that bit more, ‘I thought you didn't like him.’
‘Of course I bloody do!’ Lily shouted, ‘why do you think-‘
‘I know,’ Sabrina said, cutting her ranting short as her mouth fell agape though she recovered quick enough to say, ‘what?’
‘I know you like him,’ Sabrina said offering her a sympathetic smile, ‘I’ve known all along I was just hoping this would make you realise you did too. Instead of leading him on for the sake of it.’
‘I wasn’t leading him on!’ Lily protested, blushing as Sabrina raised an eyebrow, ‘besides how could you mess with me like that!’
‘It got you to admit the truth didn’t it,’ Sabrina reasoned. Lily sighed.
‘That’s not the…you shouldn’t have done that,’ Lily said sadly.
‘If it makes you feel any better it wasn’t meant to be like this. It was supposed to be a laugh,’ Sabrina said, moving forward to hug her friend loosely, ‘you were just a little more stubborn than planned. I’m sorry.’
‘It’s okay,’ Lily said, smiling sadly though she found her eyes trailing over to James who was far enough away he could no longer hear what either of them were saying as evidenced by the panicked look on his face.
‘Maybe now you can stop dancing around the fact that you actually like one another,’ Sabrina said softly, ‘he really likes you Lily.’
‘I really like him too,’ she said, gnawing on her lip nervously.
‘If it makes you feel any better he’s not as big of a prat as he makes out,’ Sabrina quipped.
‘I heard that,’ James said from somewhere close behind them. She didn’t turn but pulled her hand away from Lily to offer him the finger, giggling with Lily before she said, ‘maybe you two should go and talk about it somewhere?’
‘Good idea,’ Lily said, hugging her friend tightly before letting her go and heading up the steps into the castle before they disappeared from view.
Sirius had been watching the whole thing, trying to wrap his head around the entire charade. He barely paid attention to his friends as they left, James offering him an apologetic smile before he disappeared. He was too focused on Sabrina, on the feelings that churned in his stomach at the sight of her. Before this whole thing had started he hadn't been sure he liked her. She was a friend, a good one and considering he and the opposite sex were rarely just friends he wasn’t sure he wanted to meander into that territory and risk mucking things up for something that might be nothing. But seeing her with James had ruined him, sent him almost as mad as it had Lily though he couldn’t quite bring himself to have the same outburst.
If he was a different man, one not raised in expectation and propriety he would’ve rushed to her, told her how relieved he was that she wasn’t dating James and how it was him he wanted her to be with if she would Just let him. If he rid himself of all modesty and decorum he would’ve hit James the moment he saw them together just as he had wanted to. But no, he couldn’t do that.
In fact as she turned round, her face growing surprised as she realised he was there, he couldn’t find anything more to say than, ‘you two aren’t dating.’
‘Nope,’ Sabrina said, coming closer to him.
‘Why lie?’ he asked.
‘It made Lily see sense didn’t it?’ she shrugged. Sirius stood up off the wall he’d been leaning against and advanced towards her until they were feet apart. He wanted to believe that it was just a prank, a joke and nothing more, but he was scared. Scared that in his failure to pursue her properly he'd lost her to someone even if it was supposed to be a sham.
‘Yeah but what if she hadn't got upset. You would've been hurting her and not even know,’ Sirius said, hoping she’d say something that would make him feel better about the hurt in his own chest.
‘I wasn’t going to marry him,’ Sabrina said aggravatedly, ‘we would've fake split up.’
‘And if you fell for each other,’ he challenged, moving closer as if he could spot the lies in her gorgeous blue eyes.
‘Not a chance,’ she said.
‘That kiss looked pretty real to me,’ he challenged.
‘That was only because you were teasing us,’ Sabrina said.
‘Yeah right,’ Sirius scoffed.
‘It’s true,’ she said, earnestly placing her hand on his bicep. Even through his jumper her touch felt like lava, igniting his body on fire in a way that terrified him so he pulled away, trying to push his feelings down or find a way that he wouldn’t have to be honest with her, ‘yeah, I guess. I mean you don’t want to date anyone right? Should've known it was fake.’
‘I do want to date. I thought me going out with James would prove that,’ she said, stopping him in his tracks and making him look back at her. His grey gaze was heavy on her face now, making her shift awkwardly as she held her elbow, as if her arm across he could hold her together. That was like music to his ears and yet he was reluctant.
‘Why do you say no to everyone who asks you then?’ he asked puzzled, though her words were music to his ears.
‘Because I don’t want to date them,’ she said, she could feel him being reeled in now, dancing around the topic like James and Lily would. So she needed to be brave. If he couldn’t be honest she’d have to be.
‘But you want to date someone?’ he asked.
‘Yeah,’ she said, moving towards him so that there was barely a foot between them, her big blue eyes staring at him as she said, ‘someone who gets very irritable about me dating his best friend. Someone who was very intent on watching everyone who asks me out. Someone who doesn’t realise the reason I’m oblivious to that is because I’m too busy ogling him.’
‘What if you and this person don’t work out?’ Sirius asked quietly, his heart singing but his head very much worrying, ‘I mean what if he’s never dated a friend before.’
‘Well then if it doesn’t work out we go back to being friends,’ Sabrina said, moving to wrap her arms around his waist. Sirius sighed, ‘you make it sound so easy.’
‘Oh it's not. I'm no fan of the dating game, believe me,’ she said, leaning in, ‘but sometimes it's worth it for the right person.’
‘Yeah?’ he asked, his hand brushing past her cheek as he moved a lock of golden hair over her shoulder.
‘Yeah,’ she said, ‘so c’mon.’
‘What?’ Sirius asked.
‘Are you going to show if you’re a better kisser than Potter or not?’ she smiled.
And with that Sirius black made the final move of the game.

I don’t want to be a huge asshole, but...
There are a lot of people trying to find a modicum of positivity in the finale. It’s not about this Destiel-Bibro war that’s happened over the years, it’s not about Cas, it’s not about any of the superficial drama. This finale was the weirdest mixture of OOC and in character writing I have ever seen.
Things that are in character:
The brothers put each other first. They are each other’s safe place and stability. Up until the very end. Sam respected Dean’s wishes, stayed with him in his last moments, and let him go gracefully. Sam even went on and had a full life so Dean’s sacrifices weren’t in vain.
For Dean, Heaven wasn’t perfect without Sam there. And he had this huge sense of relief and happiness when Sam arrived.
Jack deconstructed the walls of Heaven so that it was a vast place where everyone could be together. They weren’t living out their “best memories” anymore. They were creating new memories eternally with each other. And Bobby recognizing that Jack is like Dean’s son by saying, “That boy of yours...”
Cas helped build the Heaven that he always dreamed of. Cas always had such a high standard for Heaven, and it always fell short. He helped Jack build a home that was warm and comforting and beautiful and open and loving and true. Everything Cas stood for.
Bobby, the man Dean adopted as his father, was there to share a beer with him (just like Dean shared with his dad in his childhood). And Bobby was happy and confirmed that Dean is in a Heaven he deserves.
Sam mourning Dean’s death for the rest of his life, but also living his life to honor Dean. Classic Sam.
Dean using his last moments to tell Sam how much he loves him and how proud he is. Sam deserved to hear that because we all know Sam looked at Dean as a parental figure.
Things that are OOC:
Sam not marrying Eileen. The show created this HUGE story arc around Sam and Eileen and their real love and connection. And then they shoot this finale and couldn’t even get an actress that looked like Eileen to stand it the blurry background. Like, I don’t care what you say, it’s NOT open to interpretation. Sam did not end up with Eileen. All of you people who are Sam stans, who say you want your character to be happy and live a full life should be livid. Sam ending up with Eileen wouldn’t have canceled out the fact that Dean was/is his number one person. Dean gave his blessing for Eileen, and he loved her and welcomed her into their lives because he knew Sam loved her and had a genuine connection with her. Having them together would not have ruined the ending in any way. Sam still could have ended up with Dean on that bridge.
Tumblr media
That woman with the blonde/light brown hair is NOT Eileen. They couldn’t even get an actress with dark brown hair to keep hope alive that they ended up together. Absolutely awful.
Dean just accepting Cas’ death and not even talking about it, other than to say, “Yeah I think about em’ too.” I don’t care if you don’t believe in Destiel or that the love was reciprocated. Dean EXCLUSIVELY said multiple times that Cas is a member of their family and a brother to the boys. He said the words, “YOU”RE MY BEST FRIEND.” I’m not saying Dean should have scarified himself to go pull Cas out of the Empty (because we had 40 minutes to wrap up 15 years). But the fact that Dean was like: I’m gonna eat some pie and just not acknowledge any feelings or thoughts and act like nothing ever happened is SO OOC. If your best friend died tragically, you’d have something to say about it or act like you had something to say about it. And that’s not to say I wanted Dean to be miserable and hurting. I’m happy he got a dog and found some normalcy. But they lost SO many people, and he’s just walking around cool as a cucumber? When every other season/episode where they lost someone important to Dean he was a mess. And I’m not just talking about Cas- we all obviously know how Dean behaved when Cas died/was missing/Lucifer was controlling him. But even when Jo and Ellen died. Even when Mary died. Even when Bobby died. Even when John died. Even when Crowley died. Even when Jack died, Dean was shown hurting. Suddenly everything is cool and normal there’s no pain or anything? The fuck? A brief moment of acknowledgement. That’s all it needed.
I will never forgive the writers for ending Dean’s story that way. A rusty nail impaling him (probably in his pulmonary arteries/aorta based on the angle) on some random hunt after he finally exhaled the episode before and said, “We’re finally free.” He sacrificed his ENTIRE childhood and life for his brother and the world and so many other people, and he didn't even get to enjoy being a human on the Earth and living a life for more than a week. What! Dean was always a character filled with tragedy, and yeah, maybe he did have to die. You can make that argument. But like that?! AND. AND! Sam held a funeral for Dean and DIDN’T INVITE ANYONE! What!!! No one was there to toast to Dean and share their memories and give him the send-off he deserved. Sam just burned his body alone. Never. That would have NEVER happened. Sam loved Dean SO much and looked up to him and thought the world of him. Dean was his big brother who was fearless and strong and the best hunter on this Earth (and probably every other planet), and he didn’t celebrate his life in the end?
Cas not showing up in Heaven is absolutely insane. INSANE. It doesn’t matter what you think of their relationship, the show has proven that Cas is important to Dean (even if you think Cas is way at the bottom of the list, he’s on it!). Dean’s ideal retirement/endgame was him, Sam, and Cas on a beach, drinking cocktails, with hula girls. That was the future Dean wanted for him and his family. And you’re telling me that Cas helped Jack build the best version of Heaven possible, and the minute Dean Winchester arrived Cas wasn’t there to greet him. Even just to say “Hello, Dean.” Even call Dean’s phone and say, “Welcome home.” Cas would have been the one greeting Dean in Heaven, with Bobby. Requited or not, it’s canon that Cas is in love with Dean. You don’t just ignore the opportunity to see the person you’re in love with. And... and! Even if Cas didn’t greet Dean in Heaven immediately, he would have appeared in the Impala during the drive. He would have met the brothers on the bridge to welcome them both home. Cas loved Sam too. He would have been there. The three boys together again. Team Free Will!
I love Cas, and I know a lot of Cas stans feel buried and betrayed and hurt over the show doing a “is he there or isn’t he?” thing. And that is completely valid. I can’t even express to you how sorry I am that so many of us in the fandom are hurting. But I know this show. And this show has always made it clear that it was/is always about two brothers. Fine. But Dean Winchester, the most caring and loving human in the entire universe, deserved better. I am so sick to my stomach that Dean’s whole life was him convinced that there was only one way for his story to end and it was him dying tragically. For years he never let himself even entertain the thought of living a life because he 1) didn’t think he deserved that or was worth it 2) it just wasn’t in the cards. We watched Dean grow so much, SO MUCH, that we finally saw him talking about the future and having hope for the future. And yeah, maybe he wouldn’t get the future he talked about with the retirement on the beach, but he would have lived long enough to experience life outside of just “playing whack-a-mole” and being God’s favorite story and puppet. Dean didn’t even get to enjoy his freedom and humanity. They took a character that they purposefully pushed through so many stages of character development to attain hope and faith and self-worth and promise, and killed him.
What the fuck!
