Had a blast performing at the Korean American Story Gala 💖 I grew up in the Midwest not seeing many other Korean Americans and almost no queer Korean Americans so it was super healing to be a part of this event. It was an honor to share a stage with Joel Kim Booster who I’ve been a big fan of since his first comedy album! Andrew Ahn director of one of my fav queer movies of all time Fire Island, Schuyler Bailar who is an inspiration to me and trans athletes everywhere, Vivian Lee iconic NYC journalist and news anchor and Kathleen Kim amazing Sesame Street puppeteer of the first Asian American muppet! A beautiful evening and one I’ll remember for awhile

more reblog friendly version of that korean lgbt resources ask!
the first lgbt korean variety show merry queer just started airing it's a documentary with a small celebrity panel offering commentary. it follows the stories of several diff korean lgbt people and their various experiences with navigating life and coming out it's quite emotional. the panel is hong seokcheon (actor/restauranteur/television personality who is considered the first openly gay celebrity), shin dongyeop (one of korea's national mcs, in the top 5 television personalities in skorea and hong seokcheon's close friend), and hani from exid.
hyperlink press is a korean diaspora and queer curatorial collective based in new york that hosts and curates a lot of cool art projects about queer and korean diasporic identity. their original concept was being inspired by south korean lesbian forums from the early 2000s, which is where they got their name. they had a really cool zine about korean lesbian history that has been discontinued for copyright reasons but my best friend got a copy and i loved it!
there's also a lot of korean queer youtubers nowadays just google 퀴어 and various keywords and u can find some rly good content, not a lot of it has eng subs tho! here's edhi park and her friends' youtube channel! they have lgbt vlogs, short films, discussions, and all sorts of content on there!
last time i was here i went to a cool exhibit event that queer arch or (korean queer archive) was doing i linked their website! i learned a lot about korean lgbt culture and activism from the 70s to now and got to flip through gay and lesbian and trans magazines from the 90s and 2000s it was so cool.
i also rly enjoyed the zine "Queereans: The LGBTQ+ History of Korea" by jkimdraws it was free on gumroad last time i checked!
from @yujacha "coming to you (2021) is a really really lovely doc about two korean moms and their queer children!!" hadn't heard of this one will check it out!!
love this primer on queer korean cinema it offers really good contextualization and discussion as well as a list of recs!

bitch i'm so sick & tired of seeing white girls on my feed doing yellowface and tryna look asian. like they'll do their makeup a certain way in order to make their eyes appear more slanted and try to emulate a kawaii, eepuh look like no bitch i spent way too many years in self-hatred because of eurocentric ideals of beauty. yall were the same bitches complaining that yall looked "too asian" when you smiled for photos. so sit down and stop tryna cop my culture just because yours has shitty, underseasoned food so here i did you culture vultures a fucking favor and took some selfies to remind yall that you will NEVER, EVER be yellow like me.

#Repost @mia.mingus (@get_repost) ・・・ thanks for the love, @poconlineclassroom! 💜💜💜 (link in profile) . [image from @poconlineclassroom of white text on a purple background of lines from my essay, "Forced Intimacy: An Ableist Norm," that read: "Forced intimacy was one of the many ways i learned that consent doesn't not exist for my disabled asian girl bodymind. / i learned how to simultaneously shrink myself and nonconsentually open myself up as a disabled girl of color every damn day. / Able bodied people treat access as a logistical interaction, rather than a human interaction." -mia mingus.] . #miamingus #forcedintimacy #disability #disabled #ableism #girlsofcolor #womenofcolor #access #accessibility #disabilityjustice #consent #queerean #gaysian #asiangirls #asianwomen #korean #adoptee . ----- #Repost @poconlineclassroom (@get_repost) ・・・ In our reading of the week, activist Mia Mingus (@mia.mingus ) discusses the idea of “forced intimacy” that disabled people face daily living in an ableist world. Forced intimacy is just that - physical or mental intimacy that able bodied people assume is not up for debate. For example, someone may start pushing a disabled person’s wheelchair or grab their arm to support them without their consent. Or in a less physical sense, disabled people are expected to justify their accessibility needs and, as Mingus says, perform emotional labor in order to be likeable to receive those necessary supports. Mingus provides personal reflection into her experiences as a disabled woman of color who from a young age was taught that her consent didn’t matter. (Another great piece by Mingus is "Access Intimacy," which can also be found on her blog Leaving Evidence)

Omg yayyy you're back in your homeland! I know you've mentioned before how much you miss it and love having a close connection with your culture and I'm really glad you were able to have that experience again! One day I'd like to visit where my family came from but the country has a fascist government and is really anti-trans so idk if I'll ever be able to :/ ANYWHO enough about me, I was just wondering if you have any resources for books and/documentaries about queer Korean culture? I enjoy learning about queer culture from around the world but unfortunately it's hard to find things about it in Korea. But if you don't know of many or just don't want to take the time to list some resources cuz you're busy that's totally fine! Also, I don't know and will not be presumptuous by acting like I know exactly how you feel since I am *Michael Scott voice* a White but I do know how much it can suck to be forced into a situation where you're simultaneously out with your friends and to yourself but closeted with your family and/or in public. I always feel so out of place in women's restrooms or when my family refer to me as their daughter/sister but I can't go against it for fear of something bad happening so I'll have that same like, "am I lying to myself??" sort of feeling and it sucks and I'm really sorry you have to go through that rn.
