Muse to play 'Origin Of Symmetry' in full at Reading And Leeds Festivals
Matt Bellamy tweets the news about 2001 album
March 29, 2011
Muse are planning to play their 'Origin Of Symmetry' album in full at the Reading And Leeds Festivals this summer, according to Matt Bellamy.
The frontman had already stated that the band's headline sets would draw heavily from their 2001 album. He also said that the shows would be the last time some of those songs were played live.
Now he has tweeted that the Devon trio will be playing the 2001 album, their second, from start to finish.
He wrote from Twitter.com/bellamy_matt: "So we'll probably play 'Origin...' in its entirety (as well other songs) at Reading/Leeds as it will be 10 years since it came out."
The Reading And Leeds Festivals take place on August 26–28. Muse headline the Friday night (26) at Leeds and the Sunday night (28) at Reading.
My Chemical Romance, The Strokes and Pulp will also play headline slots.

Muse to play 'Origin...' songs for the 'last time' at Reading And Leeds Festivals
Matt Bellamy and co. talk to NME about headline slots
March 22, 2011
Muse have said they are likely to play some songs from their 'Origin Of Symmetry' album for the "last time" at this year's Reading And Leeds Festivals.
The band were speaking in the new issue of NME (March 23) or available digitally. They are joining My Chemical Romance in headlining the August events, while The Strokes and Pulp will play co-headline slots.
Frontman Matt Bellamy said that the band want to mark the 10-year anniversary of 'Origin Of Symmetry''s release in some way at the shows.
"It's probably the last time some of these songs will ever be played live again," he said of the 2001 album. He explained that the shows would see the band "drawing a line under one phase of our career".
He added: "It was on the second album ['Origin...'] that things really started happening for the band, and when we focused on the live side of things much more. So it'll be like coming full circle: we've gone off on one a little bit, and now it feels like the right time to pull it back and remind ourselves of what we were doing 10 years ago."
The Reading And Leeds Festivals take place on August 26–28. Muse headline the Friday night (26) at Leeds and the Sunday night (28) at Reading.

I think Glasto 2022 was their bets bill in like. 20 years. 2022 Reading did not compare#because obviously they can't book the exact same lineup and so Glasto gets all the good bands first. And then the heavier acts that used to#differentiate Reading from Glastonbury Reading doesn't care about them anymore it's now busy booking popstars to make up the sales#and it's like. GUYS!! You will never uncover the next generation of rock giants if you don't GIVE! Them! A fucking! Chance!!#Put Nova Twins on the Main Stage headline and watch rock fans come to the rock festival.#Don't get me wrong — I think Billie Eilish is insanely talented and should definitely be headlining festivals (she's headlining Osheaga thi#weekend!) But I don't see why Reading needs to become Coachella. Download is a metal festival right? It's okay for festivals to have genres#those are the pathways for new musicians. I am not the anon who followed for cobra and now will accept my fate as a tai fan, but please, please, please explain the connection between The Academy Is and Cobra Starship.
Unabridged is preferred tbh.
Tumblr media
i got 2 anons about this and this is literally the thing i'm the most insane about omg ok warning this is gonna be long cause i'm just gonna include everything ive got on my google doc about this
TLDR; same record labels, snakes on a plane, lots of tours together, music videos, webshows and general friendship is the conncection
It starts pre-cobra with midtown. iirc, tai were just fans of midtown pre-tai and in the early days, they're from chicago and came up in the same scene as fob, mike carden (tais guitarists) old band had fob open for them and he was even asked to join fob in an early version of it, so fob, tai and midtown all eventually become friends which is when they met gabe and eventually they toured with midtown twice in 04-05.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2006- midtown dies in 05 and from the ashes rises COBRA STARSHIP. Cobras gets signed to fueled by ramen and decaydance records, which is the same 2 labels as TAI. while gabe's working on the music, tai's bassist, sisky finds out about snakes on a plane and suggested submitting their song to be on the soundtrack. Then william beckett the singer of TAI suggested to gabe that this would be perfect for cobras and he should put a song forward, which he does. Gabe makes some changes to the lyrics, adds william, travie and maja and Bring it (snakes on a plane) was born. (source) Sometime around 2006-2005 gabe briefly featured in the music video for 'the phrase that pays'
2007- things ramp up and they start touring together. Both bands are supporting acts on the honda civic 2007 tour and are featured at 3 separate Decaydance fest shows in Paris, Kohn and London. They also do a series of international festivals together like reading and leeds, pukkelpop, summer sonic, ect AND they do an australia tour just the 2 of them, this was all through summer. At the end of the year cobras jump on TAI's headliner tour, they weren't supposed to butviva la cobra came out earlier than planned so they had no tour to promote it so tai let them open for the last month or so. Both were also apart of the MTVu campus takeover this year. TAI had a webshow and cobra are featured multiple times from 2007-2008, this is actually where they got the idea for cobra cam and even stole TAI's camera man to film it. also somewhere someone released official merch that included cobra, TAI and fob that said 'gabe is not a ynonym for sisky' and they promoted it together.
Tumblr media
2008- Both bands are part of the lineup for warped tour this year, snakes was played a lot and when suarez had to leave the tour for a couple days, sisky and the butcher (TAI's drummer) covered for him. TAI's album was released in august and featured backing vocals from Ryland, Alex and Gabe, and every member of cobra is mentioned in the thank yous. Right after warped both bands go to australia and opened for panic at the disco (bonus info: victoria, sisky and ryan went bar hopping for ryans 22nd), then right after they go and do a japan tour with the hush sound and the cab. For welcome to the new administration, suarez remixed TAI's song 'automatic eyes'
2009 onwards- Things slowed down after this. The butcher is briefly featured in the good girls go bad music video. in 2011 both band play at the 15th anniversary of fueled by ramen, this ended up being TAI's last show before they split. After they split, butcher was the drum tech for cobra from 2011-2012. When TAI had a reunion in 2015, suarez played bass for sisky with carly rae jepsen so he could play on their reunion tour. Also around 2015 Gabe and Mike started TAG music together, i think mike has left since then though.
Extras: at every TAI show since their 2022 reunion they have played snakes on a plane, with gabe or without. Gabe also always does backing vocals for the song 'classifieds' if he's there. Sisky used to do travies rap during snakes if he wasn't there, he did it a bunch on warped 2008.
Sisky commented this during cobrakkah in 2021 and i think about it a lot tbh. I think they were just best friends who got to tour the world together in their youth and are still friends and still hold a lot of love for eachother :,)
Tumblr media
hope that wasn't too much, i'm pretty sure i covered everything that i know about. Decaydance is my favourite thing so i have a google doc of all their connections so i remember them all :D
something to add would be that TAI are opening for fob on the 3rd in LA and a few cobras live there, so i wouldn't be suprised if they show up for snakes on a plane!
EDIT: if you want photos of any of these things I mentioned I probably have some so please ask! and if you don't want to, search my tag #thepolycule and there's a bunch of photos of decaydance bands hanging out together, including TAI and cobra

With his shrewd eyes and his forks of corn-yellow hair, Julian Sands was a natural choice to play the valiant, romantic George Emerson, who snatches a kiss from Lucy Honeychurch (Helena Bonham Carter) in a Tuscan poppy field in A Room With a View (1985). “I wanted him to be real, not a two-dimensional minor screen god,” he said. “I liked him in his lighter, sexier moments, less so when he was brooding.”
Sands, who has died aged 65 while hiking in mountains in California, was dashing in that film, but he could also project a dandyish, effete or sinister quality. He was blessed with a mellifluous voice and a lean, youthful, fine-boned face, even if, as a child, his brothers insisted he resembled a horse. (He agreed.) In James Ivory’s film of EM Forster’s novel, he was pure heart-throb material. His participation in the notorious nude bathing scene was no impediment to the picture’s success.
Prior to that, he had played the journalist Jon Swain in The Killing Fields (1984), Roland Joffé’s drama about the bloody rise of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. The picture marked the beginning of his friendship with his co-star John Malkovich. “I’d been cautioned by Roland to keep my distance from John because he was an unstable character,” Sands recalled. “And John had been told by Roland to stay away from me, because I was a refined, sensible person who didn’t want to be distracted. In fact, we bonded instantly.”
Malkovich directed Sands in a one-man show in which he read Harold Pinter’s poetry. First staged in 2011, the production had its origins in an occasion six years earlier when Pinter, suffering from oesophageal cancer, had asked Sands to read in his stead at a benefit event in St Stephen Walbrook church in the City of London. The writer “sat in the front row with his stone basilisk stare”, Sands recalled.
Not all his work was so highfalutin, and a good deal of it fell into the category of boisterous, campy fun. In Ken Russell’s Gothic (1986), he played the poet Shelley, who indulges in sex, drugs and séances with Lord Byron (Gabriel Byrne) and the future Mary Shelley (Natasha Richardson), and is prone to recite verse naked in thunderstorms.
In a similar vein but far less deranged was Impromptu (1991), which brought together other notable 19th-century figures including George Sand (Judy Davis) and Frederic Chopin (Hugh Grant). Sands, who played Franz Liszt, described it as “Carry On Composer”.
Born in Otley, West Yorkshire, he was raised in Leeds and Gargrave, near Skipton; he later described his childhood as “part conservative and part Huckleberry Finn”. His mother, Brenda, was a Tory councillor and leading light of the local amateur dramatic society, while his father, William, who left when Julian was three, was a soil analyst. Julian made his acting debut in a local pantomime at the age of eight.
At 13, he won a scholarship to Lord Wandsworth college, Hampshire. He moved to London to study at Central School of Speech and Drama, and while there became friends with Derek Jarman. He played the Devil in an extended promotional video that Jarman directed in 1979 for Marianne Faithfull’s album Broken English. The role had been intended for David Bowie, who dropped out at the eleventh hour. “You’re devilish,” Jarman told Sands. “You can play it.”
The actor’s first film appearance came in an adaptation of Peter Nichols’s stage comedy Privates on Parade (1983), starring John Cleese and Denis Quilley, from which his one line of dialogue was cut. There was more rotten luck when he won the lead in a new Tarzan movie, only for the financing to fall through. It was eventually filmed as Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), with Christopher Lambert donning the hallowed loin-cloth.
On television, he starred with Anthony Hopkins in the miniseries A Married Man (1983). In Oxford Blues (1984), he was a rower butting heads with a Las Vegas parking attendant (Rob Lowe) who has tricked his way into a place at Oriel College. He was in The Doctor and the Devils (1985), inspired by the Burke and Hare case. “I had a roll in the hay with Twiggy which took about 15 takes,” he said.
Following A Room With a View, he agreed to play the lead in Ivory’s next Forster adaptation, Maurice (1987), before abruptly dropping out and fleeing to the US. In the process, he left behind his wife, the journalist Sarah Sands (nee Harvey), who described him as “restless” and “dramatic”, and their son, Henry. “I’m not the first person to create stability and security and then dismantle it even more effectively than I created it,” the actor said.
Once in America he took on an array of film parts. In Warlock (1989), he played the son of Satan, wreaking havoc in modern-day Los Angeles. Investing this pantomime villain with lip-smacking brio, he was likened by the Washington Post to a “hell-bent Peter Pan” and nominated for best actor in the Fangoria Chainsaw awards. He reprised the role in Warlock: The Armageddon (1993).
As an entomologist in Arachnophobia (1990), he was called upon to have as many as a hundred spiders crawling all over his face. Alternating these mainstream projects with arthouse ones, he played a diplomat in pre-war Poland in Krzysztof Zanussi’s Wherever You Are … (1988) and a monk in Night Sun (1990), the Taviani brothers’ adaptation of Tolstoy’s short story Father Sergius.
For the Canadian horror director David Cronenberg, he starred in the warped and witty Naked Lunch (1991), which disproved those who had declared William S Burroughs’s original novel unfilmable. Just as outré but less accomplished was Boxing Helena (1993), directed by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David. Sands played a surgeon who keeps a woman captive by making her a quadruple amputee.
After starring as a young classics teacher in his friend Mike Figgis’s film of Terence Rattigan’s The Browning Version (1994), Sands worked a further six times with that director, appearing in his movies even when he was an unorthodox choice for the job in hand. One example was the part of a menacing Latvian pimp in Leaving Las Vegas (1996).
Later roles include a mysteriously unblemished Phantom in Dario Argento’s version of The Phantom of the Opera (1998), Louis XIV (whom Sands described as “the first supermodel”) in Joffé’s Vatel (2000), a crime kingpin named Snakehead in the Jackie Chan vehicle The Medallion (2003), a computer security wizard in the comic caper Ocean’s Thirteen (2007), a younger version of the businessman played by Christopher Plummer in David Fincher’s take on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) and a sadistic paedophile in the gruelling wartime odyssey The Painted Bird (2019).
On television, he was a Russian entrepreneur in the fifth season of 24 (2006) and the hero’s father, Jor-El, in two episodes of the Superman spin-off Smallville (2009). For the BBC, he played two very different actors in factually based one-off specials: first Laurence Olivier in Kenneth Tynan: In Praise of Hardcore (2005), then John Le Mesurier in We’re Doomed! The Dad’s Army Story (2015).
His recent work includes Benediction, Terence Davies’s haunting study of Siegfried Sassoon, and the thriller The Survivalist (both 2021), which found him back in the company of Malkovich. One of several titles still awaiting release is the drama Double Soul (2023) starring F Murray Abraham and Paz Vega.
Sands never stopped wandering, walking, running and climbing. “I am on a perpetual Grand Tour,” he said in 2000. Asked in 2018 about his eclectic career, he explained: “I was looking for something exotic, things that took me out of myself. I think I found myself a little boring.”
He was reported missing while out in the San Gabriel mountains, north of Los Angeles, in mid-January 2023. His remains were found in June.
In 1990 he married Evgenia Citkowitz. She survives him, along with their two daughters, Imogen and Natalya, and his son.

Artist Highlight - Chase Atlantic
Tumblr media
Band Name: Chase Atlantic
Debut: 2014
Band Members: Mitchel Cave, Clinton Cave, Christian Anthony
This week's artist highlight is one of my favorite bands of all time, Chase Atlantic. Chase Atlantic is a 3 member Pop, Rock, Alternative, and Indie boy band. Two of the members, Mitchel and Clinton Cave, are brothers while Christian is a long time friend of theirs. All three boys are Australian and first came together as a group in 2011. Chase Atlantic creates sensual pop that veers between emo-electronic, SoundCloud rap, and modern R&B. Before releasing their self-titled full-length debut in 2017, the group originally gained notoriety with their wildly popular 2014 single "Friends." Friends is a really great song that I highly recommend listening to. Phases, their second album from 2018, attracted additional attention, peaked at number one on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, and secured them a spot on the Warped Tour. Their seductive sound has been refined, as heard on 2021's Beauty in Death.
Mitchel and Clinton Cave were raised in Cairns, Australia and were educated in both jazz and classical music. Mitchel joined the boy band What About Tonight while still in his teenage years, where he first met guitarist Christian Anthony. The group competed on The X Factor Australia for a brief while, but soon disbanded. Before getting back in touch with Anthony and starting Chase Atlantic in 2011, the Cave brothers continued to make music throughout the following few years and released music on their YouTube page. The group started revamping their sound, fusing parts of modern hip-hop and trap production with inspirations from catchy pop and emo-rock. They released the Dalliance EP in 2014, followed by Nostalgia in 2015, which featured the hit song "Friends," that I mentioned earlier.
Two individuals by the name of Joel and Benji Madden of the rock band Good Charlotte were interested in these early releases and hired Chase Atlantic to work for their MDDN development firm. Following a deal with Warner Bros., the group released three EPs, all of which served as prelude to the arrival of their self-titled full-length debut in 2017. Tours in the US and Australia were followed by appearances at Bonnaroo and the Reading/Leeds Festival, as well as a spot on the 2018 Warped Tour. Phases, their second album, was released in 2019 and featured the singles "Her" and "Love Is (Not) Easy." (Side note: I literally listened to Love Is (Not) Easy twice a day for about 2 months, the song is just that good.) It debuted in the Top Ten on the Heatseekers chart and peaked at number 24 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
Chase Atlantic traveled extensively in 2018 and 2019 before returning to Los Angeles to continue writing music. Because the MDDN, owned by the Madden Brothers, was temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, they primarily recorded at home. The band released their third studio album, the Billboard-charting Beauty in Death, in March 2021. A deluxe edition of Beauty in Death was released in 2022 and featured the follow-up songs "OHMAMI" and "ESCORT."
I really love Chase Atlantic's music so much. Their music is perfect to listen to when I'm doing homework or when I'm on a nighttime car ride. I really hope that the next time Chase Atlantic comes to an area like Charlotte or Atlanta that I can go because it is one of my ultimate dreams to see them live in concert.
Do you think you would like Chase Atlantic? If so, you should listen to one of the songs I attached to this post. They're really great and I think you would like them too!

What Are The San Jose Benchmarking Energy Requirements?
Tumblr media
As a business owner in the San Jose area, you're likely looking for ways to reduce your energy consumption and save money on your monthly energy bills. Benchmarking is one of the best ways to identify where your company can make improvements in its energy usage. But what are the benchmarking energy requirements for businesses in San Jose? Keep reading to find out!
What Are The San Jose Benchmarking Energy Requirements?
The San Jose benchmarking energy requirements are a city-wide standard used to ensure that all new buildings use energy efficiency. The requirements are based on an Energy Use Index (EUI), which measures the amount of energy used per square foot of building space. All new commercial and multifamily buildings must meet or exceed the benchmark for their particular type of building.
San Jose has a goal to reduce its energy consumption by 25% by 2025. In order to gauge their progress, the city uses benchmarking for measuring their energy requirements against other similar cities. The criteria for selection are things like population, geography, and climate.
By doing this, they can identify areas where they are using more energy than necessary and work on improving those areas. Additionally, benchmarking provides a way to compare progress over time and for energy efficiency improvements.
For example, if San Jose's energy consumption has decreased by 2% since last year, they can see if that is better or worse than other cities with similar populations and climates.
Ultimately, benchmarking is a useful tool for assessing progress and identifying areas of improvement when it comes to reducing energy consumption.
Who Is Required To Comply With The San Jose Benchmarking Energy Requirements?
As a business owner in the City of San Jose, you may be required to benchmark the energy or water services of your property and disclose this information to the city annually.
This requirement applies to properties that are 50,000 square feet or more, as well as those that are part of a city-designated portfolio. In order to comply with this requirement, you will need to submit data on your property's energy usage through the ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool.
This data will then be used to calculate your property's ENERGY STAR score, which will be disclosed to the city. Benchmarking your property's energy usage is a simple way to increase efficiency improvement measures and helps in greenhouse gas reduction.
How Have The San Jose Energy Requirements Changed Since Their Inception In 2009, And What Factors Led To These Changes?
The San Jose benchmarking energy requirements have changed since their inception in 2009. In 2009, the city began tracking total energy use in all commercial buildings over 50,000 square feet.
The following year, in 2010, the city started requiring that these buildings disclose their weather normalized site energy use to the public.
In 2011, the city adopted an ordinance requiring that all commercial buildings over 50,000 square feet display an Energy Star label. The ordinance also requires that these buildings be benchmarked against similar buildings in the city.
Finally, in 2012, the city began requiring that all new commercial construction meet or exceed the USGBC's LEED Silver standard. These changes have led to a decrease in total energy use in San Jose commercial buildings.
Are There Any Proposed Updates To The San Jose Benchmarking Energy Requirements That Are Currently Under Consideration By The City Government?
Tumblr media
As a green city, San Jose is always looking for ways to reduce its environmental impact. One way the city is working towards this goal is by benchmarking energy requirements for new buildings.
The current requirements were put in place in 2007, and the city is now considering updates for 2022. Some of the proposed changes include increasing the minimum percentage of renewable energy that must be used, as well as updating the standards for electric vehicle charging stations.
The city is also considering changing the way buildings are assessed so that those that use less energy overall would receive a higher rating. By making these changes, San Jose would send a strong message that it is committed to reducing its carbon footprint.
How Does Complying With The San Jose Benchmarking Energy Requirements Impact A Building's Bottom Line?
Complying with the San Jose Benchmarking energy requirements can have a positive impact on a building's bottom line. By ensuring that a building is energy efficient, owners can save money on utility bills and make their property more attractive to potential tenants.
In addition, by reducing a building's energy audit consumption, owners can help to protect the environment regarding performance standards. The benchmarking requirements are designed to encourage buildings to reduce their energy usage by 10 percent.
To comply, buildings must track their energy use and submit an annual report to the city. While some buildings may find it challenging to meet the requirements, others are already meeting or exceeding the benchmarks. For example, one office building in San Jose has reduced its energy use by 20 percent since 2016.
As a result of its efforts, the building has saved more than $130,000 in utility costs. In addition, the building's environmental impact has been reduced by 1,500 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. By complying with the San Jose Benchmarking energy requirements, buildings can save money. Moreover, adopting the water efficiency measures help owners achieve desirable results.
What Is The Best Way For Multifamily Property Owners In San Jose To Stay Up-To-Date On The Latest Benchmarking Energy Requirements News And Updates?
Tumblr media
San Jose's new energy benchmarking ordinance requires multifamily property owners to track their energy consumption and report it to the city annually. The ordinance, which took effect in July 2017, applies to all multifamily buildings with 20 or more units.
There are several ways for multifamily property owners to stay up-to-date on the latest benchmarking news and requirements.
The first is to sign up for the city's e-notification system, which will send an email whenever there is an update to the ordinance or other important information. Property owners can also check the city's website or contact the city directly with questions.
Another way to stay informed is to join a professional organization such as the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) of San Francisco.
BOMA offers educational resources and networking opportunities for property professionals, including those who manage multifamily properties. BOMA also advocates on behalf of the industry at the local, state, and federal levels.
Finally, multifamily property owners can stay up-to-date on energy benchmarking requirements by attending training offered by local utilities or other organizations. This training provides an overview of the ordinance and how to comply with it.
They also offer an opportunity to ask questions and get clarification on any confusion points. Utilities typically offer these training free of charge, and they are open to all interested parties, not just customers of that particular utility. Upcoming training can be found on the websites of local utilities or through online search engines such as Google.

Muse to start work on new album without Matt Bellamy
June 1, 2011 8:53
Bassist Chris Wolstenholme says he's 'nervous' to be following his singer's efforts
Muse’s Chris Wolstenholme has revealed that the band will start working on their new album without the help of singer Matt Bellamy.
With Bellamy currently taking a break from the band as he prepares for the birth of his first child with his fiancée, actress Kate Hudson, bassist Wolstenholme told The Sun that he would be writing new material for the LP on his own. "Matt's raised the bar quite high in terms of songwriting,” he said. "I'm a bit nervous because I don't want to write a song and it be responsible for the demise of the band."
Earlier this month, Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard revealed they were planning on releasing the potentially 'softer' follow-up to 2009’s ‘The Resistance’ in 2012. Howard said: "Who knows, it might be softer rock, but then it's up to me and Chris to make it heavy again. A heavy rock lullaby! But I'm sure it will move forward in some way."
Muse have also suggested that they will play their 2001 album 'Origin Of Symmetry' in full at the Reading And Leeds Festivals.

Bassist Chris Wolstenholme says report is 'a load of bollocks'
Muse have dismissed reports that they are beginning work on their new album without singer Matt Bellamy.
It was reported yesterday (June 1) that the band would be starting work on the follow-up to their 2009 fifth album 'The Resistance' without Bellamy, but bassist Chris Wolstenholme has now said this isn't true.
Responding on his Twitter page Twitter.com/ctwolstenholme, the bassist said of the article's original source, a report in The Sun, "So to clear things up amongst any readers of The Sun out there, it's all a load of bollocks."
Earlier this month, Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard told NME that they were planning on releasing a 'softer' new album in 2012. Howard said: "Who knows, it might be softer rock, but then it's up to me and Chris to make it heavy again. A heavy rock lullaby! But I'm sure it will move forward in some way."
Muse headline Reading And Leeds Festival this summer.

"Buy Muse (at Reading Festival) Tickets from £5" can you imagine. This was Reading 2011, where Muse played Origin of Symmetry in full to mark its 10 year anniversary.

(And for anyone with burning curiosity, Chris said nothing about Matt not writing, just that he would be writing for the next Muse album (The 2nd Law), for the first time (Save Me and Liquid State)
Chris: “Matt's raised the bar quite high in terms of songwriting. I'm a bit nervous because I don't want to write a song and it be responsible for the demise of the band.”)

9 Years Of "AM"
In celebration of the 9th anniversary of the release of "AM" by the band Arctic Monkeys, we brought in today's publication a little bit of the history of this incredible band.
9 years that we have the acclaimed "DO I WANNA KNOW".
Tumblr media
The band's history happened as follows, after getting their guitars for Christmas 2001, neighbors Alex Turner and Jamie Cook formed a band with their school friends, Andy Nicholson, who played bass, and Matt Helders, who was left to be the drummer.
Under the name Bang Bang, they played covers of bands like Led Zeppelin and sang with a Sheffield accent. After Alex took over the vocal and songwriting task (he actually already had a few), they changed the band's name to Arctic Monkeys.
After some of the first concerts, in 2003, they started recording demo CDs and distributing them to the public. As the offer was limited, fans copied the songs and made them available on the Internet. Even a profile of the band on the MySpace website was created, all without the members themselves being aware. Thanks to this viral dissemination by the great network, soon not only friends, but hundreds of people sang all the lyrics at the concerts.
In 2004, her popularity caught the attention of BBC Radio One and the British press. Mark Bull, a local amateur photographer filmed a live performance and made the music video for "Fake Tales Of San Francisco", releasing it on his website, along with the compilation Beneath The Boardwalk.
In May 2005, the band released their first EP, Five Minutes with Arctic Monkeys, with only 1500 copies on CD and 2000 on 7" Vinyl, but also available on the iTunes Music Store. In June they signed with Domino Records and soon then they played the Carling Stage, the venue for the Reading and Leeds festivals reserved for lesser-known bands. In October, Domino's first release, I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor, went straight to number one in UK singles sales. United, with 38,962 copies. In the same month, they appeared on their first cover of the New Musical Express magazine.
The second single, When The Sun Goes Down, came out on January 6, 2006 and sold 38,922 copies, again reaching the top of sales. Even with the leak on the Internet and intense file sharing, the debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released in 2006, achieved record sales figures. The 120,000 copies in the UK on the first day alone surpassed the sum of all other "top 20" albums in the country on that date, and the first week closed at 363,735 copies.
Without letting the dust settle, in April 2006 they released a five-track EP, Who the Fuck Are Arctic Monkeys?. Despite the high sales, the songs' foul language resulted in low radio plays, which did not bother the band. Shortly after the EP's release, the band introduced a new bassist, Nick O'Malley. Initially, Nick would only replace Andy on the US tour, but it was later announced that he had left the band permanently. In August, they released Leave Before The Lights Come On, the first single not to reach number one. Shortly thereafter, the album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not won the Mercury Music Prize, leaving behind albums such as The Eraser by Thom Yorke, The Back Room by the Editors and Black Holes and Revelations by Muse.
In April 2007, the Arctic Monkeys released their second album, Favourite Worst Nightmare, which on the 29th of the same month already appeared at number one in the UK charts. From this album came three singles, "Brianstorm", released in April, "Fluorescent Adolescent" in July and "Teddy Picker" in December, ending the album's tour. In 2009, the band released their third album, titled Humbug, with some tracks produced by Josh Homme from Queens Of The Stone Age. Additionally, The Kills singer Alison Mosshart shares vocals with Alex on the track "Fire And The Thud".
Suck It and See, Arctic Monkeys' fourth studio album, came out in June 2011. In February 2012, the band released the song "R U Mine?", which was included on the soundtrack of the video game Forza Horizon. The song was also featured on the group's fifth album, AM,, released in September 2013.
In 2018, the band surprised everyone when they released Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, an album that caused a stir among their fans. Mixing elements of lounge pop, space pop and jazz, the Arctic Monkeys' sixth album was compared to the work of artists such as David Bowie, Serge Gainsbourg, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, among others.

We hope you enjoyed today's post and, if you didn't know the band, you were wasting time, the boys have amazing songs.

Celebrated local poet’s work to be cast in brickwork of new Leeds building
Location: Whitelock St, North Leeds, West Yorkshire, northern England, UK

Whitelock Street Leeds Student Residences for Alumno
As regeneration begins on a disused site in Whitelock Street, north of Leeds city centre, Alumno is planning a wide-ranging programme of artists commissions for its new development to support the city’s growing student population.
Alumno’s first arts project focuses on award-winning Yorkshire-based poet Zaffar Kunial, who has been commissioned to write two new works for the building, exploring both the natural and the artistic history of the area.
The building’s atrium will include a large frieze based on an abstract painting by Terry Frost OBE. Frost took up painting in his 30s after serving in World War Two. After his tenure in Leeds as Gregory Fellow in 1954-1956, he taught at Leeds College of Art. Kunial is currently a Douglas Caster Cultural Fellow in Poetry at Leeds University and is developing a poem inspired by the work of Frost, which will be cast into the brickwork at the building’s entrance.
The new development will feature specially designed external spaces, including a ‘rain garden’ overlooking the Sheepscar Beck, which runs to the rear of the site before disappearing under Leeds city centre. Kunial will create a poem based on the idea and history of this ‘hidden river’, which will be built into the retaining wall.
“It’s an honour to find poetic words to complement this exciting new building, relating both to the artwork of Terry Frost and also to the geographical setting near Sheepscar Beck,” said Kunial, whose poem ‘Hill Speak’ won third prize in the 2011 National Poetry Competition. “Composing public-facing short poems that can be repeatedly read and also throw new light on the built environment around the words has been a wonderful challenge.”
Alumno has a strong track record of commissioning artists and poets to make site-specific commissions for its new buildings, working with curator Matthew Jarratt to develop their arts strategies and commissions. Previous poetry commissions have included: Jacob Polley in St Andrews, Ira Lightman in Durham and Norwich, Bob Deveraux in Leamington Spa, Jenny Pagdin in Norwich, and Otis Mensah in Sheffield.
“Alumno’s commitment to working with local artists and poets as part of their developments demonstrates their understanding that the Arts are so important in creating interesting and atmospheric spaces,” said Jarrett. “Working with poets such as Zaffar means that the new building in Leeds will be a creative space that references local history and culture.”
Commenting on the working with Kunial, Alumno CEO David Campbell said: “We have been creating premium quality student accommodation around the UK for over 14 years, and have always strived to support the Arts and the heritage of the areas adjacent to our developments by liaising with local artists.
“We are delighted to be working with Zaffar on our Whitelock Street project, which will be a great addition to this emerging, creative district and offer significant regeneration benefits at a crucial time. It will also assist in providing more housing options, particularly to local people, by alleviating the need for students to rent family homes privately in the area.”
Alumno’s Whitelock Street development will comprise 105 residential units that will house 411 students in 53 studios and a range of 4 to 8 bedroom cluster flats. Facilities will include areas for communal living, including a central hub, gym, study, cinema, laundry room, roof terrace with a garden, and extensive secure bicycle storage. The ground floor of the building will feature flexible gallery and studio space, which will be managed by local award-winning non-profit organisation East St Arts.
Alumno and the Whitlock Street development
Alumno’s development in Leeds received Planning Permission in November 2021 and construction has now commenced on site. Located on Whitelock Street to the north of Leeds city centre, Alumno are working with architects Howarth Litchfield to demolish a number of vacant buildings on the site to provide student accommodation with ground floor commercial and cultural uses, including potential for convenience retail, food-beverage and artist’s studios. https://ift.tt/JkeO1lo
Alumno, established in 2006, partners with universities, colleges and other stakeholders to provide high quality living space for over 7,000 students to date across the UK, including London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Norwich, Glasgow, Durham and St Andrews.
Alumno delivers distinct and sensitive designs, carefully engaging with local residents to integrate its developments for the benefit of the existing community. Its schemes introduce a mix of other uses alongside the student accommodation.

Poet Zaffar Kunial
In 2011, Kunial won third prize in the National Poetry Competition with Hill Speak. His further achievements include contributing to ‘The Pity’, a series of new poems commissioned and published by the Poetry Society to the centenary of the First World War, which premiered live at London’s Southbank Centre on National Poetry Day 2014. Also in 2014, Kunial published a pamphlet in the Faber New Poets series and was Poet-in-Residence at the Wordsworth Trust the same year.
