GOTTA LOVE A GOOD COVER
Machine-Man Vol. 2 #1 (October 1984)

The covers in this series are artistically ambitious and unique. #1 is intricate and mechanical without losing a certain 1980s flair.

Machine-Man is the 145th most wanted Marvel character for Marvel Contest of Champions.

Feige: “Legions”

Remember how Kevin Feige said there are “legions” of fans of previous Marvel TV shows?

FX’s canceled Legion is one of those shows, albeit not in the MCU, yet.

David Haller, aka LEGION, is the #45 most wanted champ last I looked.

Northstar’s twin sister, AURORA has issues of her own, having gone through the Weapon X program and dealt with multiple-personality disorder, that could give her a unique build. Blinding light and speed.

FALCON FRIDAY

I know his concept has been updated, but FALCON (CLASSIC) deserves to be at least in the top 200 champs. He has actual super powers, and could be an interesting non-Skill-class champ.

STORM SATURDAY: STORMBORN

In some realities, Ororo became a Thor, with a hammer called Stormcaster, and is known as STORMBORN. I thought this would be the second Storm variant in-game. Would be cool if she were the third!

NOTES

*Not all versions of this character are black.

3-D Man is a legacy hero who was a white male and his brother, doing a cosmic body swap routine (instead of the usual single person being both the civilian and the heroic alter ego). It was basically both brothers as one character. A younger black male Olympic track star, Delroy Garrett, Jr., joined the “Triune Understanding” cult in order to take his human skill potential to its absolute peak. But this group were actually pulling from the same cosmic power source as 3-D Man, for villainous purposes. Garrett was unwittingly channeling 3-D Man’s powers to become a hero called Triathlon. Eventually all three men were merged into one modern 3-D Man, before all three personalities in the gestalt person were freed into surviving individual people again, yielding their superpower in the process.

Notes

*Not always portrayed as a black character.

Captain Universe is the identity of any hero who consists of a symbiosis between a host and the Uni-Power, an incarnation of the Enigma Force. Several well known supers have been Captain Universe. The best-known are probably Cosmic Spider-Man (that’s why he’s cosmic) and Blue Hulk (that’s why Hulk is blue), but also Juggernaut, X-23, and others have been Captain Universe. One of its more recent hosts was Tamara Devoux, a black amnesiac woman who joined the Avengers in 2013 after receiving the Uni-Power.

Notes

*Not always or necessarily portrayed as black.

Acroyear is not a human of African descent, but rather a member of an ebony-skinned alien race from the Microverse.

Korath is traditionally a blue-skinned Kree of the Pursuer Corps, but is played by Djimon Hounsou in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Makkari is a white male in the comics but will be played by a black woman, Lauren Ridloff, in the MCU.

Notes

*Not all versions of these characters are black.

Kurse is the super-powered monster into which Algrim the Strong transformed. Algrim is a drow or Dark Elf, which in Marvel comics are usually depicted masked or having grayish-purple skin. In fantasy lore drow are often depicted with ebony skin and silvery white hair, but they are not black in the African ethnic sense. However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Algrim in Thor: The Dark World (2013) was portrayed by a black actor, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

Lash’s ethnicity in the comics is not entirely clear, but his alter ego Dr. Andrew Garner was portrayed by Blair Underwood in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Notes

*Not all versions of these characters are black.

Tombstone’s back story is such that he was from Brooklyn and mocked from childhood for his albinism. However, research reveals no intention that he was black or from a black family, at least initially. More recent depictions of him, however, including in Spider-Man for PS4, are either implicitly or clearly African-American. Furthermore, while her mother is unknown, Tombstone’s daughter Beetle (Janice Lincoln) is sometimes portrayed as having a dark complexion.

Notes

*Not all versions of these characters are black.

Probably Shocker’s alter ego Herman Schultz was not originally black in the comics, although Bokeem Woodbine did portray him in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), so if he resurfaces in the MCU, he’ll probably be black.

Deathlok is a cyborg program and technology that has been several people, at least two of whom were black, including Henry Hayes in the comics and Mike Peterson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
