There's just something about how Lestat starts off his vampirism so morally uncomplicated, so easy to root for, comically good natured. what a good boy! what an upstanding young man! he's only killing cutthroats and murderers! he's dressing Like That so that highwaymen try to kill him first! he's sending money home to ma!! and the family! IMMEDIATELY! he doesn't even like his family and they don't love him! he pays off his old boss's debts! he pays his boyfriend's nicer rent! buys him violin lessons! does all this at a distance because he doesn't want it to be emotionally awful for them. he's constantly contemplating the nature of goodness and what that might mean!
and then he has one (1) kinda shitty day night and he's killing and eating a mother and child on the sacred grounds of Notre Dame. not because he has to. he does not. not because he isn't in control of his actions. he is. not for the sadistic pleasure of it--there is none--and not to be evil for the sake of evil. a poor woman checks on him, sees his bloody clothes and tries to drag him to safety and get him medical care, because she thinks he's hurt and she wants to help, and Lestat kills her. not out of evil or malice or sadism, but because he chooses to, because he's fully swapped out good vs. evil for aesthetic judgements, because the nature of vampirism itself changes him so fundamentally.
and that's horror. even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, to steal from another monster genre. there is a fundamental loss there, a change against his will that's nothing to do with superpowers, a change so wide and deep that even as he is aware of it, he isn't really alarmed. he just reasons his way through it. and the audience cheers for him, of course. but nothing he does is justified. and that's the horror of it, too, that a monster could be so likable and yet so fundamentally alien.

Well, that unfortunately explains a whole frustrating lot about some questions I had pre-release.
Dracula is, while not their exclusive character (thank you public domain), one of Universal's oldest classic draws. Him, Frankenstein's Creature, and the handful of side bogeymen are the biggest hitters of the Universal Monsters crew. And unlike Renfield, TLVotD is the definition of classic horror! The Count's own gruesome bloodstained roots! It should have been promoted everywhere! Explosively!
And yet all this time, there's only been the one trailer. Barely any clips. Barely any interviews or BTS snippets I could scrape up, all of which would have been finished well before the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes.
When you have to actively dig for movie updates instead of being bombarded with them in the inescapable ad barrage…that means there's nothing to promote with. Because nobody bothered to take care of the promotional needs for the movie.
No, The Last Voyage of the Demeter's not a masterwork of cinema. But it's a good period piece old school scary Dracula tale! It's a hundred times better than the generic Count Sexypire slop that's been churned out for decades! This movie was made for the fans of the book, fans of the monster! Which we almost never get to have! And it's getting screwed over because of studios' haggling and more of those lovely layoffs. Ugh.
If anyone out there has plans to see the movie in theaters, now's the time to get your ticket. With it getting axed on international releases and folks being only half-aware the thing's even happening, there's no knowing what a short shelf life it'll have on the big screen.

Tumblr media
Renfield had been living his best life recently. He had gotten rid of his old boss, had a new job that he could do from home, had started putting time aside for himself, he had even gotten a cat. The cat was probably his favorite because he had met this wonderful woman on his way home from getting the cat.
“Oh they are so cute!” She said as he was walking down the street to bring the cat home. He could not take his eyes off hers. He could just fall into them “Do they have a name yet?”
“No, not yet.” He said while scratching the top of the cat's head. “Do you have any suggestions?”
Ever since that day, he hung out with the girl whose name he learned to be (Y/n). He liked having a friend. Someone he could always go to. He was with her the day he felt everything change in their relationship.
“Oh what is this film?” He said while leaning in on the couch.
“It’s Star Wars, Robert,” She says with a laugh. “It’s one of the biggest films that there is”
“I never had time to see anything, Dracula made sure that I was always busy.” He says while leaning back on the couch when the movie ends. “That was brilliant.”
“I agree, You really liked it, huh?” She said with a huge smile, and turned towards him. In that moment, where she looked like she was the most comfortable she had ever been, and her smile shined so bright. He felt his heart stop in a way that it hadn’t in years.
“Yes, I did.” He said in a soft voice, while keeping eye contact. He felt himself leaning in, as he started to get closer, his cat jumped onto her lap, causing the tension to break.
He got his cat and left in a hurry that night. Scared of what he was feeling, he ran to talk to Rebecca, but she didn’t help him much. She told him that he was falling for her. That scared him even more so he left and just went back home.
He avoided her, as much as he could for a few weeks. He had not felt this way in such a long time, he didn’t even know what to do. How do dates go nowadays? What kinds of dates were appropriate now? What do you do on dates now? How long do you date until you propose? He knew that had changed to longer than it was back when he was getting married. He was just so nervous, and scared.
Renfield decided to see her again, so he went to the flower shop close to her apartment, and got her favorite flowers. He knocked on her door, the nerves getting to him again. When she opened the door, she looked at him for a second, and shut the door in his face, not even saying anything. He stood there for a minute, before he decided to knock again, this time when she answered, she had her hand on her hip, and looked annoyed. “What?”
“I-I wanted to apologize, and explain.” Renfield said as he pushed the flowers in front of him to her. Hoping that she would take them. “Please?”
She thought for a moment, before taking the flowers and motioning for him to come in. She went to fill a vase with water as Renfield decided to start talking again.
“I got scared” He blurted out. “I started feeling things for you that I have not felt in ages. I didn’t know what to do.”
She sighed, and looked at him. “You could have just talked to me”
“I know that, Rebecca yelled at me, and said that I was ‘ghosting’ you, she said that it was a horrible thing to do to someone, I felt awful and ran over immediately.” He said while walking closer to her. “I am so sorry (Y/n)”.
He started down at her, the same stare that he gave her the day he started feeling for her. He leaned in, and did not stop himself this time. He kissed her lightly, waiting to see what she would do. She placed a hand on the side of his face and kissed him back. When they pulled away, they just looked at each other for a minute.
“Let me do this properly, let me take you out to dinner, (Y/n), please?” He stared at her and hoped that she would say yes.
“Yes, see, was that so hard to do?” She said with a smile, and a light laugh.
“Tonight?” He suggested while placing the flowers that he got her, in the vase.
“Tonight works great.” She said, while taking the vase to place by the window.  “I do have a question though,” He said while sitting down on her couch. “How long do people wait to get married now?” Right after he said it, he was rushing over to catch her from falling.

Good Stuff: Best Movies of 2023
Tumblr media
This was NOT a great year for blockbusters, huh? This was probably Disney's worst in years, multiple flops including what was meant to be their centennial anniversary film. It looked remarkably by the numbers, but think of the conglomerate's losses... Anyway, this to me was a pretty great year for films. Like 2022, I'm amazed at the variety we got that says more about the shifting tides of people's interest in movies. It was the most times I've been to the theater. We got a big worker's strike over the summer, especially large push back against degenerates trying to push AI to do more than just shitposting. And it was enough for me to know Adam Sandler, Godzilla, and Hayao Miyazaki could get the better of Disney. With this said, let this be a first for Good Stuff and count down my favorites of this year.
12. Renfield
Tumblr media
My suspicions were on the money and I'm glad I gave this a shot in the theaters. Cage was the best Dracula I could've asked for in what you might say was an Adult Swim-esque dark comedy. It definitely has that style of gruesomeness and humor given Robert Kirkman and the Writer/Director behind Moral Orel made this. Unfortunately, Ben Schwartz stuck out like a sore thumb even if he fulfills his purpose in this, reminding me of Christopher Mintz-Plasse in KickAss; I feel he or Jason Schwartzman would've been better suited. Plus it can feel all over the place, an identity crisis that you can't even grasp after it finishes. Then again, I just had fun watching and would gladly rewatch for Cage and Hoult who are the highlights of this.
11. Migration
Tumblr media
Call it blasphemous, but I enjoyed this more than the Mario movie. It's essentially Rio mixed with National Lampoon's Vacation, with a lovable cast, solid animation, and an eazy breezy road trip story. I've always looked to Illumination for simple enjoyable romps and I got what I expected here. Gave me Amphibia vibes in a way, replace frogs with birds. Everything surrounding the villain is my only real issue, he was an obvious and very nothing bad guy, but it's overall better paced than Super Mario Bros where it felt like you watched an eternity in 3 minutes. Still don't get the air of folk looking down on this for just being serviceable when it's honestly become my favorite Illumination movie next to the first Despicable Me.
10. Killers of the Flower Moon
Tumblr media
Sad to say this is the weakest Scorsese movie for me, mainly because it felt like we're following the wrong main character. Lily Gladstone is incredible in this, among the other great performers, but she felt sidelined in favor of DeCaprio and De Niro's perspectives. It's like if in 1995's Casino, we just follow Ginger throughout the moment Sam introduces her. I liked the turmoil Leo's character goes through, but it paled in comparison to Mollie who was more affected by his and Hale's actions. That does not mean it's all bad. This can be a beautiful, dynamic, and ruthless movie that just made me feel bad for watching it; running with the words "harsh reality" throughout the 3 and a half hour runtime.
9. Good Burger 2
Tumblr media
I watched Good Burger 1 & 2 this Thanksgiving weekend, and just had a blast. These are the kind of movies that are charmingly stupid but not insultingly so. Kel Mitchell's Ed is emblematic of how much dumb fun this duology is where he's actively comical but not smoothbrained to ruin your time. This I say is like Home Alone 2 where it is just beat for beat the 1st movie with minor developments but that doesn't really matter when it's just as well put together. It never feels like Kenan nor Kel missed a beat and the drama not overstaying its welcome. It is just "Good Burger Again" without it feeling like diminishing returns compared to other rehashing sequels.
8. Leo
Tumblr media
Can you believe this got better publicity than Disney's Wish? Even YMS could appreciate this movie, that's how you know Sandler has his recognizable game when you least expect it. But Leo is a surprisingly good comedy that has actually sincere moments. Being Happy Madison's 2nd ever animation, it's like Adam waited to refine the production as opposed to putting a cash grab together like one would expect. It's not all good, especially trying to be a musical, but seeing it once you'd be impressed how much good it does with the risks it takes.
7. Nimona
Tumblr media
Like Migration, everything surrounding the villain is the one big issue I have with this, especially when it comes to affecting the film's message. At the same time, she pales in comparison to the dynamic pairing of Ballister Blackheart and the titular shapeshifter. Nimona is my favorite character of 2023, her energy and confidence matched by the struggle she bears existing alone and the facade made to band-aid it. Her and Ballister's journey alone made me glad this got out of development hell, being Blue Sky's final production posthumous. To me it wasn't about being a take that to Disney, it was about the fact a movie like Nimona got to exist as great as it did. Hoping Stevenson is satisfied with their adaptation, because it definitely earned its flowers.
6. Emesis Blue
Tumblr media
Offhand, it openly sucks that Letterboxd refuses to let this stay on the site to log, but it can't be overstated how much of a marvel this was. Repurposing not just the characters, but the lore and mechanics of Team Fortress 2 into a feature length horror thriller. The animation's top notch where it can have godly framing that was on par with the known legends of horror film making. SFM animations can be beautiful on their own, shitpost or otherwise, but Emesis Blue goes a step beyond by having a compelling story fitting for the universe on top of, again, every frame being a painting.
5. Shin Kamen Rider
Tumblr media
I've never really saw any Tokusatsu shows. Not that I hate the genre, just could never get into it while recognizing the glorious looking chaos found in clips. Knowing Hideaki Anno directed was what got me into seeing this film and it opened my mind quite a bit. This was the legacy film that definitely had Anno's touch in both the action and drama. While the climax can notably drag, you never feel left out of what was essentially the original Kamen Rider's origin story. It doesn't have the complex VFX of stuff like Marvel, but the costumes and fight scenes makes me wish we got more of this in America beyond Power Rangers.
4. TMNT Mutant Mayhem
Tumblr media
Advertising before release really didn't make this appear like a promising film. If there's anything I learned from this year though, appearances can be deceiving. Like Nimona was for her movie, the creative choices for this made it the TMNT movie I never knew I wanted. To me this felt akin to the Lego Batman movie where it's not only a good love letter of the franchise for more than its fanservice, but this spin on the characters is able to have a new sincere view of them without overhauling everything about the TMNT. That and it has the greatest needle drops I've had in a long while like how do insert He-Man Fabulous Secret Powers and expect me to hate this?
3. Godzilla Minus One
Tumblr media
I call this a great year for films because it marks the first time I got to see a Toho produced Godzilla, with subtitles, in an real movie theater. Needless to say, it felt like I got to enjoy the 1954 film again anew. Not a remake mind you, but the parallels were uncanny and this spins here work just as well, if not more here than with the original in a couple places. Both are still strong movies nonetheless. Minus One is a refurbish that dishes out what people always wanted and uniquely giving a little more while never sacrificing why the OG is that timeless. With it getting more than a limited release, I'm glad this got to be more than a niche celebration of the kaijuu king.
2. Oppenheimer
Tumblr media
This film's been meme'd to heaven, hell you could say it got meme'd to success thanks to its dual release with Barbie, but it didn't undermine getting hooked to watching this anyways. This really has become my favorite Nolan film, a compelling biopic that doesn't exactly herald its titular lead in the best light thanks to the paradoxical storytelling. Oppenheimer gives us the largest ensemble I know, and delivers in the most breathtaking moments I never knew I could get. Cillian killed it among the many who made the three hours of people sitting and talking in rooms actually tense and intriguing to thread. Plus it gave us the beauty of Josh Peck being the guy to detonate the test bomb like cherry on top of this cinematic cake.
1. The Holdovers
Tumblr media
I remember watching Alexander Payne's Sideways with Paul Giamatti as a high schooler but couldn't appreciate it until rewatching this year. It's one of the best mid-life crisis comedies you could see, still fresh in its easy going presentation and music. The same can be said for this film, made to feel like it came from the late 70s or 80s with the old opening logos that I didn't think you could do in these times. Out the gate, this was the holiday story I was shocked would be as relatable as it was, with the trio of Giamatti, Randolph, and Sessa each having their story that resonated with me strongly. With the right amount of time, Payne offers an remarkably cozy, down to earth movie where from reserved to outgoing, it did a lot for me emotionally. Like Netflix's Klaus, I kinda want this to be a traditional rewatch for the holiday seasons. One that everyone should try at least once, especially if they feel the disillusionment of the season where this might lift their spirits one way or another.
If there's anything to learn from this year, it's that the meta has definitely shifted. Even when the many on my list didn't make billions like the Avatar films, the variety and risks made spoke more than the big dogs like Disney and WB putting out unprofitable blockbusters that ranged from very by the numbers to you don't need to see The Flash to know how god awful it just was. More people are & should branch out beyond the major mainstream names. Not that the big dogs aren't ever gonna make great films in the coming years, but we should appreciate more than the big budget features you can tell are playing it safe. Time can be patient for great cinema, sleeper hits or not, so take advantage while you're young.

(Minor spoilers for Renfield. Warning: This in a small rant about Renfield and how people criticize harshly on things that don't need to be.)
As an actor, I fucking love Renfield (2023). There is the beautiful colouring of the movie, the blending of 1930s film techniques with 2020 techniques, interwoven story telling with even little things coming up later, perfectly crafted relationships dynamics and each character has their own motives through the movie.
That being said, A LOT of things I've seen people talk about in the movie is generally negative. People agree that it's a decent movie, but some of the things people have a problem with don't make sense from a film/acting standpoint.
I've seen people say that Rebecca was unnecessary as a character and that her arc didn't mesh with the rest of the movie. I disagree. Renfield needed someone to show him that he didn't need to bow down and he COULD stand up for himself. However, the vampire hunter trope has been overdone. It would be tiring if Renfield teamed up with someone who knew what they were doing. So they gave us a parallel story. Someone who was heading in the same direction with the same goals, but not the same path.
I saw one person complain about how many different genres they stuck into the film. Let me be clear, it's a Comedy/Horror. They added Action into for several reasons. One of the main ones is because in a good action sequence you can get really good comedic bits. I also believe the person made a comparison to Marvel with it's setup. Honestly? It's just the way the film industry is heading right now. More action, more banter, more real in a way. Marvel is just one of the few big ones jumping onto the bandwagon, give it a couple more years, you'll see everyone doing it.
I also saw someone say (negatively) that Renfield was a bit of a thriller as well and to that I say "please google what a thiller is." You could classify 90% of action or horror movies as thrillers.
And to the people who say "what about the drama and romance? Those are in the film too!" Every movie nowadays has to have a romance arc. Trust me, as an aroace, it bothers me too. However the romance in the film never went anywhere. It was basically onesided and was pretty authentically dissolved into a friendship by the end. As for the drama, you try making a movie about toxic relationships without it getting too real.
All in all, there are some thing about the movie that aren't the best. There are some moments where too much was put in, and there were a couple where not enough was. But that's the beauty in film making, not everything has to be perfect, especially in a comedy.
I've noticed a growing trend in the past few years where movies (especially independent ones with a small fanbase) will get heavily criticized. I can barely enjoy movies nowadays without someone talking about how a movie was trash, or how it failed. It's disheartening, not only as a fan but as an actor as well.
I don't know, maybe this is a sign to start making videos on film techniques in movies. Balance out some of the negativity.

Renfield’s Suit, part 1
*cracks knuckles* *cracks wrists* *cracks corn* Alright, I learned how to play mt BluRay at 0.1x speed, so I took... about 100 screencaps from the first half hour or so of the movie for suit references. You’re WELCOME @ninjathrowingstork and everyone else who wanted this!!! heart emoji
Tumblr media
So first I think it’s important to start with this Behind the Scenes shot of Proper Normal Lawyer Guy Renfield. I don’t know shit about suits. Does this look like the tattered thing he was wearing in the movie? Is it the same, um, lapels?
Tumblr media
This is such a quick shot in the flashback but it’s important because 1) suspenders and B) it confirms! Renfield spent time in the asylum after being found in the cargo hold of the Vesta (it was the Vesta, right? Or was he on the Demeter as well? In the 1931 movie it was the Vesta...). This particular shot is from when Van Helsing and Seward heard Renfield laughing because he was eavesdropping on them :3
Tumblr media
Anyway. Hoo boy, Current Year Renfield. I took this shot to highlight the fraying on his left shoulder as well as the visible mend at the, I dunno, sleeve seam? His sleeve (maybe his arm too?) was ripped off at some point and he had to stitch it back on- and we know he mended shit himself because 1) the costume designer told us and 2) sewing supplies box. (thanks eternally to @dreamcast0 for pointing out it was a sewing box and not a weird printer as I had thought!)
Tumblr media
The back of his suit is gross, man. Like, permanently sweat stained. Surprisingly no mending that I could see- guess any attacks that damaged his suit came from the front (psspsspss whump writers)
Tumblr media
As has been previously pointed out, I think, Renfield unbuttons his vest when hunting. Makes sense, I suppose, gives a little more freedom of movement. Also check out that stain on the left side of his chest. Hmm. Stabbed in the heart? I never got a clearer shot so I can’t confirm if that’s from an injury and he just didn’t treat the stain in time and it set in, or his fountain pen leaked (psspss)
Tumblr media
TFW Apache Joe is not, in fact, all out of knives. Again, left sleeve, and the lapel thingies of his suit are fraying.
Tumblr media
As Renfield was panicking about his intestines trying to become OUTtestines (I’m very funny), I realised how... badly his suit fits now. Like, it all just kinda hangs on him instead of being worn by him, you know? Poor guy was slender already, and a century of working for Dracula made him gaunt.

Ok so, I think why it haunts me so much, why Nux's death never sat right with me and I'm back to thinking about it YEARS later is: he was told that his only purpose was to die a "noble" death and then for a few scenes the movie is like "what if it was actually to survive as long as he could, even if that's a shorter time than other people, and live a noble life." And his death after that felt like a "haha just kidding". Like it kinda seemed like a slap in the face to his arc to some degree. Like yeah, he was gonna die soon. Maybe in days. Maybe weeks. Maybe months or years if he got lucky. But he should have gotten a chance to embrace that time. Not just "oh well you're terminally ill so the best thing you can do is go die I guess". Like...terminally ill people can still have lives! And purpose! Beyond anything to do with their death! Anyway rant over. Enough Nuxposting on the Renfield blog. I'll stop now.

lego flowers | teddy lobo
Tumblr media
ship/pairing: Teddy Lobo x g/n!reader
fandom: Renfield
request: anon: pleasseeee teddy x gn reader fluff??? Post movie, renfield revives him and he's learning how to be a good person?? Xx
content warnings: ooc (probably), mentions of death/murder, idk how to write endings, swearing, teddy's insecure and an idiot, fluff, confessions of love, barely proofread
word count: 1357
A/N: i started and rewrote this three times cause i got so embarrassed thinking someone actually wants to read this and they specifically asked me to write it like ahh
When you’re dating Teddy Lobo, you say goodbye to most of the normal things in life. One thing being you never have to wait in line at the shops anymore. You don’t love the fact that it’s because half the people in the room are terrified of the Lobo’s and the other half are basically owned by the Lobo’s but what can you do? You could end the relationship, cut off all contact and start a relationship with someone not so dangerous and unpredictable. But your heart tends to speak louder than your brain some days.
Unfortunately, you had found yourself rather infatuated with Teddy. While he was rough around the edges, you really did love his company, and he had shown you that he loved yours. While engaging in romantic relationships with any member of the Lobo family - or any crime family for that matter - definitely isn’t the smartest thing to do, you can’t deny how happy you are with him.
You weren't expecting him to die... then be revived by the same person who killed him. Any-who, you postponed going to therapy and helped Teddy move into your apartment (since he was legally dead and that's kind of an issue when it comes to renting a place to live in). There really wasn't much difference to your relationship since you basically lived with him before. However your apartment had much space less than the Lobo mansion had. Teddy however? He was acting differently. You supposed that dying and being brought back to life would do that to someone. Though physically, he was the same - he still had the black slicked back hair he thought made him look badass, and the big brown puppy dog eyes that severely contrasted his supposed badass look. But when he spoke, he seemed more reserved and careful, like he was overthinking every word he said to you. It was almost unnerving hearing him talk to you for the first time since he had been brought back. His cocky, arrogant demeanour was there but so faint you could barely recognise it. He reminded you of how he acted when you first started dating
When he texted you for help, you assumed he was still an idiot - something not even death could change - and hurt himself or got into more trouble with the police. You weren't expecting this.
You rushed home to your now shared apartment, welcomed by Teddy's loud swearing from your bedroom. You make your way to him, and knock on the door, your ears picking up the sound of his voice muttering a string of curses in frustration.
”Teddy? It's me.”
“Fuck- one sec.” you hear him sigh. The door is pulled open and you’re met with Teddy. His hair is dishevelled and his face has a frustrated expression, but his face soon softens when he sees you.
"What'd you need help with?" you ask, and you can just make out the red hue on his cheeks.
“Uh…” he presses his lips together, before stepping out of the door frame. On the floor you see a pile of lego bricks, spread out in no particular order. The instructions are discarded off to the side, so you’re sure Teddy didn’t spare a glance at them. You walk further inside his room and inspect the lego further, seeing majority of the pieces resembling red flower petals.
"You're making lego flowers?" you see him nod his head, "Ok sure, why not…" you mutter, sitting cross legged in front of the pile of lego.
"So can you help me?"
You grab the instruction manual, “Yeah I’ve nothing better to do.”
Teddy follows you, sitting beside you on the floor. He leans toward you to see the instructions, but you know he’s not registering anything he’s reading. You don't think he's even reading.
"I'm guessing you didn't read these?" you ask, despite knowing the answer.
An exasperated and embarrassed sigh leaves his pink lips, "They were too confusing, they didn't help."
You can't help but laugh softly at his words. He looks at you, eyebrows furrowed slightly, "Teddy it's lego. You just add one piece to another piece."
He rolls his eyes, the corner of his lips turning upwards, "Don't act like I should be ashamed for being bad at lego."
"Oh, you should definitely be ashamed."
"Well if you're so good at lego then help me already."
"I am and I will." you smile at him before grabbing some bricks from the pile and putting them together as the instructions say. You see him looking at the lego in your hands so you make sure to make the flower slower than usual, hoping he'll pay attention and be able to make one on his own. In a matter of minutes, you're holding a completed lego flower. "One down, eleven more to go."
"Eleven?!" he almost whines as he holds his head in his hands.
You roll your eyes, "Don't be a baby, it won't take that long." you shuffle closer to him to give him a better view of the instructions, "Come on, let's both make these and we'll get it done quicker." You're certain he'll slow you down but you know it'll be more fun doing it with him.
He lifts his head away from his hands and hesitantly grabs some pieces that match the ones printed on the instructions. After quite a bit of struggling and rebuilding (somehow he managed to completely break the lego into pieces just when he was almost finished), he successfully put together some lego.
He rolls his eyes when you start applauding and pretending to tear up, "I feel like you're patronising me."
"I can't imagine why."
You almost don't want to finish this bouquet. You haven't been able to spend genuine quality time with him in a long time. And you're not complaining about how pretty he looks in the evening sunlight, his face screwed together in concentration. But surprisingly it doesn't take as much time as you thought it would. Teddy places the last piece onto the rose which he adds to the bouquet and lifts it up hesitantly.
"Do you feel accomplished?"
He thinks before answering (something you're still not used to), "No, not really."
"Great. So now what?" he just shrugs, staring intently at the bouquet. You stand up from the floor, "We should probably start making dinner."
“Wait,” he stands up, awkwardly looking down at the lego in his hands. He looks bashful as ever holding out the lego bouquet to you. “Fuck this is stupid. I wanted to make these for you, cause real flowers just die. And I wanted to thank you for still being with me and helping me through everything. You’re a beautiful fucking person who deserves flowers that don’t just die... I wanna be better than I used to be, and you're a big part of why. It took me literally dying to come to this, but I don't wanna die and not come back and leave you with a bunch of shitty memories of me being an asshole."
"You did this for me?" you can barely process his words as he places the lego in your hands, and his hands wrap around yours in the process.
"I-I know they're dumb, I just thought it would be cute and dumb." he sighs.
Your hands grip the lego tighter, your heart swelling, "It is cute Teddy. And I think you're really sweet for doing it. Even if I did most of the work."
"Can I make dinner for you? You won't need to help me at all, I promise."
You smile at him, "I'd love for you to make dinner for me." your hand reaches out to cup his cheek, "If you want to and not because you feel like you have to prove you're not an asshole." his eyes meet yours and his eyebrows knit together slightly, "I love you and whatever shitty memories you think I have of you being an asshole do not affect how much I love you."
He smiles at you, and you know it's a genuine smile, "I love you too."

the renfield movie review.
Tumblr media
After getting rained on, having our first movie theater’s projector break, and having to drive to a different theater, I have finally watched Renfield (2023). ...and it was...fine? The movie’s overall tone is campy and fun, and it never takes itself seriously. It’s writing is horrible, god its so bad - the characters say exactly what they’re thinking at all times, and no emotional arc feels earned or fought for, there are no stakes (haha). But due to how silly the film is, this never makes it hard to watch. Nicholas Hoult truly shines in this movie and makes each scene with him engaging and fun. But god the writing. More thoughts bellow!
I think this movie’s biggest flex is its art direction, with over the top set pieces that create this nasty atmosphere that hangs over the whole film. Its like a grimy combination of The Lost Boys and The Phantom of the Opera. This is all complimented by the score. Without spoiling anything, there’s a moment where Dracula is monologuing and a sinister, orchestral rendition of Swan Lake plays, another reference to the 1931 movie it’s so heavily based off of. Although, it does get points of for the worst use of “na na na na” by MCR I’ve ever seen. It’s second best quality is certainly Nicholas Hoult, who took the shitty script he was given and really made something good with it. There’s a moment when Awkwafina’s character is on the phone, telling another character how fucked up Renfield is - who is sitting in the background cutely drinking some tea. Another detail I really appreciated about Hoult’s performance was the unexpected intensity with which he delivered some lines. On top of keeping Dwight Frye’s iconic laugh, it’s clear Hoult cares deeply for the source material and, if the script was better, I think he could have done a compelling book-accurate Renfield. NICHOLAS CAGE ITS NICK CAGE BABY HE WAS AWESOME ITS NICHOLAS CAGE! His portrayal of Dracula is fun and nasty as hell and might have fucked Ben Schwartz’s mom? The down side to having a movie that uses stylized hyper violence is that any threats of violence Dracula makes don’t really stick. Oh you’re gonna be violent? This is the violence movie! This isn’t an effective threat, you’re not scary! Contrasting this, the few moments where Dracula is simply talking to Renfield, acting like a real-world abuser and not the cartoon villain he is for most of the movie, are eerie and off-putting. Awkwafina’s there. Onto the bad. This film has no stakes, there are few things Renfield can’t slice apart or Awkwafina’s character can’t shoot, and due to the stated hyperviolence, Dracula never feels like a real threat to anyone except the main cast. The characters state what they feel, they experience something, and then state that they feel different in detail.  I’ve mentioned that it’s extremely frustrating that 2023′s Renfield is not written with psychosis in mind, and how this is made worse by its use of pop-psychology terms and the labeling of Dracula as a narcissist - a real condition that doesn’t make the people who have it inherently bad or abusive. This is still true, in fact the frequent references to the 1931 film, while well done, simply reminded me of what Hoult’s performance could have been. The poor writing is this film’s largest downfall, it betrays the heart Hoult brings to his role and its art department. ....however, none of the pop-psychology ever seems to really...do anything effective? Yes, Renfield literally calls Dracula a narcissist and they never really discredit it, but its also shown that calling him all these things and using snappy language doesn’t actually do anything. What does help Renfield the most is finding community and bonding with other people who have experienced abuse. What helps him is talking to people about it and realizing he isn’t alone, which I think is a pretty decent take. I’m going to watch it again when it’s uploaded to my pirating site of choice, but overall it felt more like a criticism of pop-psychology, rather than a celebration of it. Oh and also that the most effective thing you can do to get out of an abusive relationship is to beat the shit out of your abuser with your best friend. 6.5/10.

Okay, now I need your Renfield headcanons!! And I need to know if you agree/disagree with mine 😄
I hope you know I started stimming so hard when I got this notif and I'm still actively stimming now AGHJ
I absolutely agree he wouldn't keep up with "popular" music now, he's definitely still listening to the stuff he somehow got exposed to when he was younger and hes just chilling with not knowing who *Insert current pop artist here* Is
I also absolutely love him using Dracula's punishments as a way to punish himself!! Also him reading poetry... I would pay good money to hear nick hoult read me literally anything. Even the bee movie script. Also between you and me he DEFINITELY ruins his underwear at least 5 times a week
Time for my hcs!! This Is gonna be a long post
-I Imagine he has never had a phone before and he has no Idea how they work. Yes I know he has a laptop In the original script but that man Is 126 years old he would not know how to work modern technology. Rebecca gives him money to buy a phone and he buys a shitty nokia from 10 years ago because he doesn't like that the keys on a new phone are flat
-He's autistic!!!! He struggles with social cues and loud/crowded spaces, which Is why he likes his job so much. It gives him a peaceful atmosphere to work In and thats why he uses the chloroform to silence his victims Instead of letting them scream. Some stims I think he'd do are: rocking back and forth, dancing, fidgeting with things In his hands, chewing on things and doing his little giggle
-His main love language Is touch. I Imagine he loves feeling Dracula's face and teeth, he'd spend hours running his fingers across Dracula's cheeks If he could. He also enjoys cuddling and holding hands with Rebecca(platonically) because he never got any affection from Dracula.
-His favourite colours are pink and orange(which Is funny considering they are my least favourites) and he owns so much pink clothing. He's always struggled with being traditionally masculine and now that he lives In a day and age where gender expression Is more fluid and colours are less gendered he Is free to wear pink shoes and pink shirts!!
-He struggled with his sexuality for a long time before and even for quite a while after meeting Dracula. He never really loved his wife romantically and It didn't help that they were forced Into their marriage by their parents and societal expectations. They were very distant but Renfield just thought that maybe she wasn't the right one, but there wasn't anything he could do so he just put up with It and repressed his feelings. Then he met Dracula and finally realised hes gay, though he kept trying to hide It from himself until eventually his wife found out about the letters he had been sending to Dracula where the vampire flirted with him. She got angry and that was the last straw for Renfield that made him finally decide to go to Transylvania
-I think he'd really like rats and maybe even get one as a pet after leaving Dracula. He'd probably name It something cute like snuffles or mr whiskers. Maybe even Remy because It sounds like Renny(which I Imagine Rebecca calls him)
-He's VERY possessive over Dracula, to the point where he felt jealousy when he found out about Drac's wives and sort of lost himself a bit which contributed to his short descent Into madness when he was locked up In the asylum
-He loves birdwatching and just zoning out while watching them fly around. He can't do It as much now because he lives In the city but when he and Drac lived In Europe they often had houses on the outskirts of forests so he could do It a lot more back then
-I think after he and Rebecca defeated Dracula he definitely asked to "borrow" a pair of handcuffs and she looked at him suspiciously before hesitantly agreeing. Then he proceeded to get himself stuck In them a few weeks later and had to call her to help because he lost the key under his bed
-I think he'd like baking pastries and lots of sweet tasting things since they remind him of Lillian and how much she loved sweet treats, plus It helps him forget the bitter taste of Dracula's blood. He's very bad at cooking though, like absolutely atrocious. Its like when you make a sim cook something like eggs and toast and they burn the oven to a crisp
-He does crocheting and crosstitching!! He loves making gifts for Rebecca and the DRAAG support group
-Hes a very sentimental person and ends up holding onto things he doesn't really need but cant let go of. He still has one of Lillian's old teddy bears from when she was a baby and he also kept a lot of Dracula's clothes and rings along with his coffin and cane
I'm gonna stop there because this Is far too long but thank you so much for asking AGHHHH the autism cannot be contained

Can you do a Renfield scene please?
---------------------------------------------------
Renfield is an R-Rated movie for a reason.
Cinder: (Leaps over, Snaps Goodwitch neck)
Cinder: (Dodges Port's gunfire)
Cinder: (Ducks under Qrow's swing, Lunges)
Emerald: Whoawhoawhoawhoa! Uh, that was a lot, huh? Maybe we should back up to the beginning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cinder: And you are?
Emerald: E-E-E-Emerald, ma'am.
Cinder: E-E-E-Emerald who?
Emerald: E-Emerald Sustrai... ma'am.
Cinder: (Smiles) Emerald Sustrai... the thief... But I forgive you, for I am Cinder Fall.
Emerald: (Speaking over) When I first met Miss Cinder, I was- Well, like she said, a thief. She could have killed me there, but instead let me into her home. I had no idea that she would change my life and my family's lives forever. But she definitely did.
Cinder: You would make a very good assistant... Miss Sustrai.
Emerald: I empathized with her at the start, in certain aspects.
Cinder: I never eat... poultry.
Emerald: And, well, she made me feel important. She took me to places I've never dreamed of! Like the theater! But then... she made me her familiar.
Familiar (noun); a servant, often gifted by a creature in power with power portion; someone's bitch for life.
Emerald: I was responsible for everything the ma'am needed, including staff changes.
Cinder: (Sets Watts on fire)
Emerald: And providing her with her, uh... "special" cravings... that she needed to survive.
Cinder: (Mouth bloodied, Puts on bowler hat)
Emerald: Look! I didn't just jump into serving the Queen of Evil. We... We had some great times! But just like all great times-
SERVANT
Emerald: They come to an end.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cinder: (Telepathy) The Huntsmen have arrived, Emerald!.
Emerald: (Grabs box, Plucks worm, Talkover) Right, this. See, the ma'am gets her power from consuming human life, and I... I have to eat Grimm. Now, where were we again?
Cinder: (Grabs Qrow's throat, Tears it out)
Oobleck: (Holding relic) YOU WILL NOT HARM ANOTHER SOUL WHILST I STILL BREATHE!
Cinder: (Roars, Snarls)
Emerald: I'm coming, Ma'am!
Cinder: (Leaps, Bound by magic)
Oobleck: Oh, thank the Brothers that worked.
Emerald: (Runs over, Stops) Shit...
Oobleck: This is the Relic of Holding, Miss Sustrai. She cannot escape. Let us do what we must so you can finally be free!
Cinder: Free? When I am gone, they will execute you for what you have done. Sever your hands and force you to fight the Grimm. Only I can protect you. I am your only friend. I'm the only one who cares for you.
Emerald: I still remember thinking, "She really, really means it this time!".
Emerald: (Tosses a bag, Lands in the fire)
Oobleck: (Sizzling, crackling pop behind him, Drops the relic) Sustrai! We are the last of his legion! Now every drop of blood that Cinder spills will be on your hands!
Cinder: (Into smoke, Goes inside Oobleck, Explodes him from the inside)
Emerald: HOLY SHIT! Uh... That's a new one.
Port: (Shoots curtain, Drapes drop)
Cinder: (Burns in the sunlight, Leaps on Port)
Port: (Screams as he's disemboweled, Burns)
Emerald: Hold on, ma'am! (Grabs drapes, Tosses them on her) Are you okay, ma'am?!
Cinder: (Charred to a crisp, Wheezes) NO...

So they never really talked about what happened to Renfield's wife but judging by the time period she lived in she's definitely dies of old age by the time the movie happens, at least
But, the daughter could still be alive! And there's a lot of potential there for fanfic narratives I think
I imagine Roger would be too ashamed of himself to go looking for her though, at least at first. But what if she found him?

Renfield (2023)
Tumblr media
If those who would most enjoy Renfield go into it with low expectations, they’ll find an imperfect film that (mostly) caters to their tastes. This movie has such a great premise and such a good cast. If only the screenplay and story were better. I liked it more than I didn’t but while watching, I kept wondering “I should love this… why don’t I?”
Like in the novel by Bram Stoker, R. M. Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) is transformed into Dracula’s familiar when he meets the Count (Nicholas Cage) in the early 20th century. Unlike in the novel, Dracula and Renfield survive and defeat Van Helsing, along with every subsequent would-be vampire slayer they encounter. In modern day, Renfield has grown tired of the abuse Dracula throws his way. While searching for fresh victims for his master, Renfield crosses paths with Teddy Lobo (Ben Schwartz), the son of the notoritious Lobo crime family. The bloody aftermath catches the attention of police officer Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), who holds a grudge against the Lobos and is looking for an ally against them.
Even without doing any research, I could’ve told you from his performance alone, that Nicolas Cage is a massive fan of 1931’s Dracula. It’s pretty clear Robert Kirkman (who pitched the story but did not write the screenplay) and director Chris McKay are too. The film begins by showing us new versions of the most well-known scenes from the 1931 film, with the sets either recreated with immaculate attention to detail or the new actors digitally added in. For anyone who loves the Universal Monsters, it’s a delight to see new performers re-interpret the material. Remember the first time you saw the Spanish version of “Dracula”? It’s that exciting. Cage, in particular, is such a good fill-in for Bela Lugosi. Hoult doesn’t quite look like Dwight Frye and may not bring the same intensity to the role, but he turns out to be a wholly different kind of servant to this prince of darkness anyway, so it won’t bother you at all.
After the dynamite intro, we dig into the story. It’s a fun idea to show Renfield, now 90 years into his servitude, getting fed up with his situation. There are some good laughs as Dracula physically and emotionally abuses Renfield while he slowly builds the courage he needs to face this vampire he could never hope to defeat on his own. This Count doesn’t insta-die when exposed to sunlight, is super strong, immortal, able to fly, can transform into a swarm of bats, hypnotize people, turn into mist and recover from practically any injury given enough time and blood.
The problem with Renfield is that we don’t explore the vampire-familiar dynamic enough. The Lobos and Officer Quincy plot, with Renfield stuck in the middle, eats up about 60% of the film. While the scenes of Quincy and Renfield teaming up against a bunch of Lobos goons means there’s plenty of comedic gore, that's not what you came to see. Then, when we finally get back to Dracula, he announces he’s going to take over the world! With Renfield gaining superhuman strength and agility whenever he eats bugs, this horror-comedy (and I use the word horror in theory here, as none of this picture is even remotely frightening) starts to feel an awful lot like a superhero film. A superhero film that isn’t taking itself seriously but come on. I came here for a vampire movie with a fun anti-romance twist. Give me that!
Since I mentioned the gore, I want to praise the special effects. There are many shots of people get their arms torn off or getting ripped apart, gutted or dispatched in other hideous ways. In any other movie, you might ask “wait, how did they even manage to stand upright if they were that easy to turn to shreds?”. Here, it’s all part of the fun. The most impressive SFX are in the scenes showing Dracula in various states of injury. Be it a scorched skeleton that can talk or a gooey blood sucker with half his skull showing and all sorts of bits barely hanging on, it’s all mega gross and well done. I’m pretty sure most actors hate having to sit in chairs while tons of makeup are applied to them, but I’d wager that after seeing the results, Cage was like “oh yeah, I’m totally willing to do with 4-5 more times.”
In the end, I’m going to rate Renfield right down the middle. More than once, I was loving it. I felt like this movie had been made specifically for me. Far too often, however, it let me down. I know it probably doesn’t make any sense, but it’s a disappointment that I’m nonetheless glad I saw and have some affection for. (September 10, 2023)
