What on earth happened? How did the group end up with a killswitch? How is it triggered? Can they get rid of it??? 😱

okay, so i am trying to get this a bit more organized, so bare with me. Gone are the days me linking to the character sheet to every character. ALWAYS check the character key, because I do plan to change it up some.

This will get a bit winded… this goes back to session 4? or 5 I think?

Our… anonymous employer had contacted NR to investigate a death of some corpo in North Oak, the neighborhood was just starting to open up in some areas.

Dressed in designer clothes, the ragtag team of baby mercs met with the sister of the deceased whose death was questionable. Instructing that the team speak with the houses A.I, it has footage of what happened and could give clues as to the moments leading up, things that might have not been recorded.

While investigating…. Well… I don't know how much details you want. So I will link up above with everything else about the details of what they found, if you or anyone else is interested. honestly its probably scribblings of a mad woman, but whatever, I'm having fun.

After reviewing the footage, and speaking with the houses A.I, its synthetic voice distorting now, its emitting image glitching, fading in and out

NR recalls theres a server room downstairs, it most likely is where the A.I.'s housing unit was stored, there could be something in there that might be causing interferrence with the A.I.

While looking, they see a small black box, similar to the one they stole from the VBD a couple gigs back. Thinking it might be the cause of disruption, Optic, Token, and Panthera agree'd to yank the black box out of the unknown server. J I H Z Z Y, our newest member at this point, had stayed upstairs to look around to see if there was any more clues upstairs. Yanking out the Black Box, the house's power sudden shuts off, causing the server room to lock down, no one could get in or out, even net access was cut besides its own local network.

Suddenly the A.I started to Emit in front of the three mercs, He thanks the crew for setting him free, but to ensure that they don't just call NETWATCH before he's made his escape, he installs a Killswitch virus. If he's killed, they will be too. He turns the house back online, and disappears, frying everything he comes across in the net.

As to what they can do about it? That's something they are still working on.

So according to their exclusive fixer, Raj, he says that our (ANON) employer says that Lazarus (the private military mega corp that has been hired by biotechnica to work against NIGHT RAID) has the black box that contains the rogueAI, and that if they broke into HQ, it's there.

Lazarus, has been decimated by NIGHT RAID and Arasaka just a couple weeks prior when this news comes to them. Their employer is saying that if they were to break in, steal some info from lazarus, they'd happily give the info to locate the black box…

Leaving the meeting, which took place at the Afterlife, Panthera steps out to be greeted with a wave and a wink from Rogue. She slides her contact info and says "Need to speak with you."

Meeting with Rogue, she sits everyone down and informs them that she knows for a fact that Raj is lying or being lied to. She knows where the rogue A.I. is. When asking how would she know where the rogue A.I was, she informs us that she has contacts at NETWATCH, and they have the A.I pinned just beyond the black wall, and they also suspect that its the one causing problems beyond the black wall.

She also inform the group that Netwatch will help them get the killswitch off, but aren't willing to say for what. Which, started to piss J I H Z Z Y off. Freshly back from our city center gig, he's sick and tired of these corps just giving us half the info. He storms off, and Mara follows after.

So, here's some things working in the background that the whole crew doesn't know.

J I H Z Z Y makes it very clear he doesnt trust Rogue and NETWATCH, they are leaving too much room for them to try and fuck us too. If she says is true, that Raj is lying or being lied to. Where do they turn? Maybe Mara's brother?

I need to make some dividers or something shiiiieeettt.

Mara, has promised to her brother Jayce Adams, on her way out of City center, scared for Jack's life, willing to throw everything away for them, she agree'd that if he got the killswitch off her, she would do whatever he wanted. Including becoming a C-SWAT Dog.

You might ask, why does MAXTAC want Mara? BECAUSE SHE'S BUILT DIFFIN LIKE DAVID MARTINEZ. I jest, but she does have the same affinity for cyber/borgware. She's able to push herself for more chrome. (I dont have her showing her chrome, because I spent the extra money for REAL-SKIN covering. I do plan on later changing that depending on how the story goes, she was trying to HIDE what she was doing from Jack and her family, they'd be real sus if she was suddenly looking like an actual cyborg.) the fact she took the huge step in her Sigframe, taking little humanity loss (reality DICE GODS LOVE MARA, and i do wanna go on about her chrome addiction so badly, i have so many thoughts and feelings on it.) speaks to why Maxtac would want such a rarity. They have their chance to have an unstoppable force on their hands if she's given the right therapy and behavioral chip.

Mara would much rather pick the devil she knows, which in this case would be MAXTAC, and take the slipped in modified Behavioral chip, so it behaved similar to a dolls. She clocks in for work before she leaves her apartment, her consciousness goes offline, and when she clocks out back at home in her apartment at the EOD, she will awake in her apartment where she was when she left. She'd have no memory of what she had to do for work. It's not a choice she wants to make... This ends her freedom. Her life revolves around MAXTAC and her shell is used to do unspeakable things.

OKAY, SO this has gotten way more winded than I had expected. I hope this answers some questions about it. I still have a lot of questions myself, as this is all still going on currently. Well.. Hopefully starting up again soon. We're close to getting it off, I hope

I have more thoughts on this topic, I could go on. I love picking apart the little moments and just analyze them and doing this has given me more clarity on Mara and her struggle with getting the killswitch off..

Also, my power went out right as I was gonna post this last night. So I had to copy it and save it for this morning, but thats okay. I got to edit it some.

i have been stuck in hamilton the musical hell for the past several weeks so my present wip has gotten about 8k of progress in the past. three days.

(i am getting no work done, in case you were wondering)

so a fun behind the scenes fact that i learnt from that is that in 1799, voting rights were still based on whether you owned property.

the thing was, the federalist party had a monopoly on the banks in new york, and they used that to help people who would vote for them to buy property.

this was, obviously, a general problem but specifically it was a problem for the democratic-republicans (the other main political party).

so aaron burr started a campaign to build a water company for manhattan and asked for donations from many people, including prominent federalist politicians. manhattan really needed a water company, so a lot of them provided funds for this company.

at the last moment when getting his company a state charter, though, burr added a little clause that said he could spend any surplus funds on whatever he wanted, as long as it wasn't illegal.

his charter got approved, and he. did not start a water company.

instead, he dug a well and built a water storage tank and then took the rest of the money and started a bank.

using that bank, he helped people who would vote for the democratic-republicans buy property.

this will not actually be relevant to the fic, it's just 300 year old political fuckery that i find really funny and learned about today.

😭 i read this as blue lock icks and was about to drag them all through the dirt with a brutally honest character review. but anyways, reverse icks is still a good idea, so here you go anon:

rin has abandonment issues. now before u come for me, let me explain. ever since sae left him, he's been hesitant to let anyone back into his heart, and that's why you mean so much to him. his hand automatically reaches for yours in the crowd so you don't get separated. when he has nightmares and dreams of you leaving, he wakes up, patting frantically on your side of the bed until he finds your body and relaxes. hugs you as if he'll never let go and buries his face into the crook of your neck and just whispers "thank fucking god." and you can see his chin wobbling as he struggles so hard not to cry, but deep down you know he's a very sensitive soul and you're quite literally his whole world.

sae's entire character is a reverse ick. have you not seen that man? he is beautiful. but i'll give u a little scenario: sae attends a charity gala, and you're invited as his plus one. you're busy getting ready in the bathroom, and he just leans against the doorframe, breath hitching when he sees you all dolled up in your fancy dress. coughs to hide his blush when you turn around and ask him for help. creeps behind you silently, his hot breath grazing your nape as his deft fingers reach for your zipper. his hands are callused and gentle when they clasp the back of your necklace (the one he bought for you), and the cold metal contrasts with the warmth of his hands on your shoulders. his heart is beating so fast that his fingers tremble and struggle with his tie, so you fix it for him but when your gaze travels back up his face, you catch him staring down at you, his eyes filled with an intense emotion. your gesture of kindness reminds him of his mother and how he hasn't gone back home in ages and how blessed he is by the gods to have you in his life.

kaiser does the hair tuck thing where he kisses a strand of your hair and smooths it behind your ear. he tries so hard to be a suave and charming gentleman, but honestly he's just an awkward loser. screams like a girl when you watch horror movies together and hugs you so tightly you think your lungs might burst. but then he gradually quiets down and falls asleep in your arms, and you think maybe he's not so bad. he canonically is not a morning person, so when he wakes up, he has the homeless cut 2.0 with the wild bed head and groggy facial expression. also has a weird habit of walking around the house naked. in any other situation, you would've yelled at him to put some clothes on, but his physique was looking extra good today, and you sort of got distracted. he definitely noticed and not-so-subtly flexed his biceps. always tries to make you laugh even though his pick-up lines are terrible and he can't tell a good joke to save his life.

nagi sometimes wakes up before you and pulls your body closer to him. on most occasions though, it's you who wakes up before him and he drags you back to bed. he hates it when you work late and hovers above you like a phantom, waiting for you to finally finish and go cuddle with him. if it gets to the point where you fall asleep while working, he will tuck you into bed and kiss you goodnight. the next morning, you find all your work finished, albeit in poor handwriting. in all honesty, nagi is a genius, and he tries hard for you and only you. if any other person asked them to finish their work, he would've flat-out rejected them.

isagi is good with children but often at his own expense. unsuccessfully tries to make a baby laugh but ends up getting distracted and slamming face first into a telephone pole. now that made the baby start giggling, and he just smiled through tears with a red bump on his forehead, insisting that he was alright and didn't just knock his two front teeth loose. whenever he babysits your siblings/cousins, he ends up doing all the grueling work like changing diapers, taking out the trash, cleaning up after the gremlins. and yet the children will still favor you and not him. tries to act like he's not heartbroken but boy did that sting a little too much.

barou buys you flowers. has a big stupid blush on his big stupid face and refuses to admit that his heart skips a beat every time you look at him. does that thing where he looks the opposite way to pretend like he's not interested before shoving a bouquet into your hands. he's also very protective. holds your hand when you cross the sidewalk so you don't get run over. holds the door open for you every time. tried to make those origami hearts for you, but his fingers are thick and stubborn, and he stayed up all night in a fit of rage because he's not used to delicate work like this. you ended up getting a lopsided piece of crumpled paper that barou insisted was a heart, and you agreed because why would you hurt his feelings?

chigiri knows how to braid your hair. makes you sit in front of the mirror while his slender fingers carefully brush the soft strands. he can get complex too. dutch braids. french braids. fishtail braids. also does that cheesy couple tradition where he braids a piece of his own hair with yours as a symbol of love. most people don't know this, but he's actually a crackhead. sometimes when you're walking down the street, he'll do impersonations of the various people he sees. the old lady at the laundromat. the two aunties at the flower shop. the fisherman near the boardwalk. he even imitated your dad once, and you nearly lost it. he's too funny guys, but you need a sophisticated sense of humor to understand him.

and that's about it. sorry this was so short anon, but my brain is dessiccated this week.

Giving: Definitely yes 👏 They love to let everyone know that MC is theirs.

Receiving: Kinda indifferent and if it’s MC’s thing, then sure, they don’t mind at all 😆 They’re not really shy being seen with hickeys because they just simply don’t care what other people think.

Giving: Doesn’t really mind. Where they’ll put the hickeys depends on their mood. But in general, they would probably put them in places that can easily be hidden simply because they are a private person and don’t really find the prospect of strangers having any knowledge about their intimate life appealing.

Receiving: They’re not really a big fan simply because of the reason above. They would complain if MC decided to give them one AND MC BETTER PUT IT SOMEWHERE EASILY HIDDEN 😤

Short answer: Yes. I think what makes this campaign standout so much, at least mostly to me, with 18 years of roleplaying experience…Is how alive our Night City feels. These aren’t just some random newcomers, these are people born in Night city, they had lives before being mercs and it really shows throughout the campaign, where members are trying to hide what they are doing from those they love the most. One players family, friends, even ex-lovers have made huge marks on other players characters lives. Long answer: YES. MY GOD THIS IS WHAT I LOVE THE MOST ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN. Mara/the Adams & the Desert Foxes/ Atredies are probably my crown jewels of life brought life into the city. It started with me just loving how complex Mara’s life was juggling being a Medtech for a Clinic she Co-owns with her Childhood bestfriend/ love of her life that neither have found the words to say to each other yet & trying to hide her Merc life because Jack & Jayce wouldn't approve of it. Something about Jayce wanting to hide the fact he was working for Maxtac from Mara until he couldn’t any longer, Mara then having to go through great lengths to make moves around Maxtac district lockdowns to not be seen or caught by her brother. Having to come up with a good enough lie until I just started running out of them for Mara to tell Jack as to why she was leaving work early, or needed time off for a Gig. Then, after meeting Jago’s mainline Chae-Rin after his passing, she became apart of Mara’s life some weeks after when she had to be rescued by Mara, and chose to never leave becoming her roommate. There was even a sibling like relationship between the two when Chae-Rin would retaliate against J I H Z Z Y using her Matcha bodysoap by sabotaging Mara’s expensive tech hair shampoo. 2023 had caused a massed homelessness that was solved by the city by using shipping containers and making them into districts around the city. A bulk of them reside in Santo domingo between the outskirts and the Sunset motel, so when rockerboy and new Night Raid member J I H Z Z Y and Mara started their notso Secret relationship, she spent a lot of time out there, and had come to learn and love the tight-knit community that is CD-82 and its residents that have helped raise J I H Z Z Y up from nothing. These are just a couple examples. I know I refer to Mara a lot and/or jihzzy a lot, but its due to me being able to talk about them a little more liberally than I can with any of complex relationship tree we have going that shine MOST in the AU due to being able to create a little more freely there. It’s INSANE OVER THERE and I love it, I can’t wait to start the new one to further build our version of Night city. This story has all the dynamics, you name it. Anyway, I could go on more, but i gotta know who interests you the most, even if they aren't my character, I got the biography of my campaign mates, they always love indulging in some blorbolory (trademark pending?)
