Riot Layoffs

Below is a list of Rioters (especially creatives) affected by the recent layoffs. Some seem to point to the generous severance package as reason for why Riot is a “good company” but I think it’s the least they could do considering that many received no warning of their termination and had to find out at the same time as the players while others were left to wonder if they still have a job.

Small edit based on some of the responses I’ve been seeing on Twitter: League of Legends is as successful as it is because of the passionate people behind it. Your favorite skin concepts and music groups and even Arcane only exist because of their creativity and determination, not because Riot, the company itself, created them.

I don't play League of Legends. I got into Heartsteel because of Baekhyun of EXO. I did enjoy the song though, and would want to have more from the fictional group. Not sure I'll get into the game though, but I'm interested in their backstories.

Is it ok to say I'm super proud of this?! I've been struggling to draw for the past few weeks, and coloring is really one of my weak points. I've been watching tutorials and lessons but I felt like nothing was gelling. After I got the sketch in, I just went YOLO on the coloring, even changing the style halfway through. Along the way, things just clicked. Two days work, and definitely has room for improvement, but I am freakin' proud of myself.

I mean I love all the music Riot makes for League of Legends but I wish we'd get more like, in-universe folk music. Demacian country music. Ionian resistance fighter anthems. Something someone would sing around a campfire during an expedition through the Shadow Isles or the Freljord. Weaver hymns.

A month ago, Riot Games announced that from then on, they will discontinue making short stories, which is sad but understandable. It's true that many don't really read them (myself included hehe 😅), so that makes sense.

2 weeks later, Heartsteel was released! The characters have such fun personalities and not only were those shown in the animated music video but in the promotional materials as well. Would be great to see them interact more through comics though, but it's alright. This has also led to whoever is/are in charge of the Riot Games Music Twitter account to start roleplaying as the characters as part of the promo stuff. It was a little cringe imo but it was cute.

Unfortunately, that kinda led to some fans.. developing a parasocial relationship with them... 😬 Yikes! Maybe, and this is just my wacky theory, that wouldn't have happened if they made at least just one Heartsteel comic and not make whoever is/are in charge of that Twitter account to roleplay as the characters, especially interact with the fans as them.

In this essay, I will- No, actually, some people just need to learn how to chill and be reminded that these characters aren't real. (Also, don't treat real people that way either.)
