It's a measure of how little Hollywood understood what kind of filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock was that Warner Bros. insisted he make Dial M for Murder in 3-D. The process was nearing the end of its '50s heyday, one of the several attempts by the troubled studios to draw patrons away from their TV sets and into the theaters. The 3-D films of the '50s, like the blockbusters released in the process today, were mostly filled with things being flung, poked, thrust, or shot at the audience. As Hitchcock had a reputation as a "master of suspense," perhaps the studio assumed that he'd use the process to scare people. But he never needed tricks like 3-D for that, being perfectly skilled at pacing and cutting to build tension in the audience. Dial M ended up being shown mostly in 2-D anyway, and only some very peculiar blocking and framing in its images today show the efforts Hitchcock and cinematographer Robert Burks did to accommodate the moribund process: Scenes are often filmed with table lamps prominent in the foreground, for no other reason than to emphasize the action taking place beyond them. The scene in which Swann (Anthony Dawson) attempts to murder Margot (Grace Kelly) is the only bit of action that would have benefited from the process, with Margot's hand desperately reaching toward the audience for the scissors behind her. Dial M is essentially a filmed play -- Frederick Knott adapted his own theatrical hit for the movies -- and as such relies far more on dialogue and spoken exposition for its narrative coherence. It was the first of three movies -- the other two are Rear Window (1954) and To Catch a Thief (1955) -- that Hitchcock made with Kelly, and the one that gives her least to do in the way of characterization: Mostly she just has to be a pawn moved about by her husband (Ray Milland), her lover (Robert Cummings), and the police inspector (John Williams). But she clearly defined Hitchcock's "type," already partly established in his films with Joan Fontaine and Ingrid Bergman: the so-called "cool blond." Eva Marie Saint, Kim Novak, Tippi Hedren, and Janet Leigh would attempt to fill the role afterward, but never with quite the charisma that Kelly, a limited actress but a definite "presence," achieved for him. Milland is very good as the murderous husband, and Williams is a delight as the inspector who has to puzzle out what's going on with all those door keys. The rather goofy-looking Cummings has never made sense to me as a leading man -- he almost wrecks Saboteur (1942), an otherwise well-made Hitchcock film that might be regarded as one of his best if someone other than Cummings and the bland Priscilla Lane had been cast in the leads. It's not surprising that after his performance in Dial M he went straight into television and his own sitcom.

It baffles my mind that Clarence Thomas' home address actually begins with 666. That's so on the nose it feels like satire. And not even clever satire, I'm talking really obvious satire, low hanging fruit, the sort of throwaway joke they'd make on SNL or the Daily Show. It's like saying he lives on the corner of Puppy Kicker Lane and Kitten Drowner Drive, 1488 Confederate Avenue apartment KKK in New Hitlerburg. This has to have been a conscious decision. There's no way the most vile human being in government just so happens to live at 6665 Rutledge Drive on accident. He had to have chosen that number on purpose as a sick joke, "haha, yeah, I really am the worst human being, aren't I? Hail satan, fuck you!"

She was sitting on a bluestone step near the corner of Rutledge lane, just past the paint splattered wheelie bins. A waif of a girl, pale skinned and twig like, she looked like a Manga character, except her eyes were too small and demeanor too fragile. She was wearing a pale coloured checked shirt over faded denim jeans, her long hair bleached white with pale blue dip- dyed ends. She was rolling a cigarette slowly and self- consciously, not street wise enough to adopt the insouciance of more experienced street artists. She didn’t appear to be homeless, there was something too studied about her appearance for that. Perhaps she came to admire her own art, or to contemplate her next one, or to rue the loss of her favourite piece.

Rutledge Lane, street art, wheelie bins and the tree heart above, a semi permanent piece.

Street art in Hosier Lane and its right-angled annex, Rutledge Lane, is transient. Each visit brings new surprises, new styles, as the genre mutates and evolves. Recent additions include more stencil art and written messages, some with environmental and political content, others with random thoughts.

These two pieces go together. Stencils and messages seem to be in vogue in Hosier Lane at present.

Around 1771/early 1772 (age 6): Henry and Jemmy moved in with Robert Dean at Fludyer Street in Westminster (London)

April 1772 (age 6): Jemmy started school at Winson Green near Birmingham

May 1772 (age 6): Jemmy was left in England whilst his two brothers and father went to mainland Europe.

January 1775 (age 9): John was looking forward to looking after Jemmy in May/June time: ‘ Letters from Walsall from Mr. Stone and our dear little Jemmy, are inclosed_ will you indulge him in his Plan for spending Whitsuntide Holidays? 1774 John, Harry and Henry return to England

7th November 1774 Henry travels from Falmouth to Charleston leaving Harry and Jemmy with John to look after them.

Sometime between July-September 1775: The headmaster at Jemmy’s school suffered a stroke so John removed Jemmy from the school. John set out to find a different school for Jemmy. He narrowed it down to a school at Greenwich and another in Kent.

On Monday 4th September 1775 John visited both schools and decided to place Jemmy at Greenwich.

Tuesday 5th September 1775 (age 9): Jemmy was scaling the outside of their house and tried to jump to the landing outside of John’s window but lost his footing and fell. He sustained life threatening injuries and cracked his skull. John arrived back from Kent in time to comfort Jemmy. The doctors figured that the injuries were too severe to save Jemmy and John described it to his uncle, four days later: ‘At some Intervals he had his senses, so far as to be able to answer single Questions, to beckon to me, and to form his Lips to kiss me, but for the most part he was delirious, and frequently unable to articulate. Puking, Convulsions never very violent, and latterly so gentle as scarcely to be perceived, or deserve the Name, ensued, and Nature yielded.’

Henry (Harry) Laurens Jr:

25th August 1763 Henry (Harry) Laurens Jr was born.

At the time of his birth he had an older brother: John Laurens who was 9 years older than Harry, an older sister named Eleanor or Nelly who was 8 years older and another older sister Martha or Patsy who was 4 years older.

1764: When he was one year old his older sister Nelly died

Massey describes Harry as ‘timid and lacking John’s charisma’

In 1770 Henry Laurens describes his son as: ‘ Harry, on the other hand, appeared ‘a little thick Headed, loves marbles, Tops, and Tumbling much more than his Books, ‘

Early 1771: Harry went to London to be taught by Richard Clarke

21st October 1771: He was reunited with John, Henry and Jemmy.

He had a few problems at Richard Clarke’s school including Clarke putting a candle right under Harry’s face and burning his cheek. He also hadn’t done much work for 5 weeks or so.

30th May 1772: Both Harry and John were taken to Geneva to be educated

They stayed with Jean-Antoine Chais and John acted as a sort of surrogate father for Harry

In Geneva under John’s tutelage Harry showed a lot of intellectual promise. Although Massey describes Harry as ‘Timid and lacking John’s charisma’ and seems to think of him as a ‘typical middle child’.

1774: John and Harry were supposed to meet Henry at Geneva but he had a bad gout attack so then he was going to meet them in Paris but somehow John and Harry missed him in Paris and came back to London. But then John left Harry with William Manning (Martha’s dad) to meet Henry in Paris. They decided to go back to England instead of living in Geneva.

They enrolled Harry at Westminster school

I can only assume that Harry lived with John with Charles Bicknell on Chancery Lane

1775: When he was twelve years old his little brother Jemmy died

1776: Harry was still at Westminster School and John was still acting as his guardian

Henry thought about sending Harry to Geneva whilst John was fighting in America. He stayed in London though.

John found him a school although Harry wanted to go back to America.

Late 1776/1777: William Manning said to John that ‘Harry spent the Days of Whitsuntide with us, & the nights [wi]th Mr. Parsons ‘

October 1777: Harry visited Henry who was a prisoner in the Tower of London.

1782: When he was nineteen years old his older brother John died

1784: Returned to America with Henry

1792: Married age 29 to Eliza Rutledge

He had at least 2 children - John Ball Laurens (born 1799) and Edward Rutledge Laurens (born 1806)

He had 459 slaves in total. Imagine being John Laurens’s brother and owning that amount of slaves.

He had lots of money, his estate was valued at $142,510.

Died 27th May 1821, he was buried at the Laurens Cemetry at Mepkin.
