Kiera-Oona’s DIY (Sewblr, and Craftblr - free knowledge!)
For those of you who don’t really know me, Hi, I’m Kiera-Oona (also seen as kieraoona elsewhere on the internet)
I run a side blog called Kiera-Oona’s DIY, here on tumblr at @kieraoonadiy
For references on what I can do, the skills are far and vast, but I am no expert, but have experience in:
machine sewing (industrial and home machines, both modern and vintage)
Hand sewing
using a serger (just bought one recently)
Millinery (aka hat making, taking classes in school)
Visible mending using multiple techniques
other - way too many more skills to mention
With that said, I also have a Youtube channel, also called Kiera-Oona’s DIY that you all may want to check out
I’m willing to impart general knowledge, or help with any specific questions some of you out there may have with regards to your sewing or crafting questions.
Am I an expert...no
Do I have a lot of general knowledge, backed by years (one decade at least) of home sewing and a few college courses..heck yeah!
Am I willing to help you with specific questions regarding sewing in general if you get stuck? Yes
The more specific you are the better my answer will be!
Will I make something for you, for free? NO!
This is DIY after all!
(*with the exception of a very, very few select close local mutuals, you know who you are)
You can ask questions that you may have, and I will let you know if I know how to help you solve it, and if you have pics so I can explain, the better.
If you have a specific model of sewing machine, and are stuck, I need a pic, or make/model info
So if you’re stuck, drop an ask, and I will answer as best I can.
And now....a pic of a recently finished project, that I have yet to finish a video for. For reference, this is the Butterick Walk Away Dress, sized up from a bust 34″ to a bust 50″
The pockets were added on cause...who doesn’t like pockets?
So my partner @mikk1n bought me a book about sewing stuffed animals several years ago. It was
Stuffed Animals: From Concept to Construction by Abigail Patner Glassenberg
(photo of the book cover from Barnes & Noble)
Sadly, the book is out of print now and much more expensive than it once was. However, for the beginner sewist who wants to dive into making stuffed animals and learns best through doing, I would argue that this resource is a must-have!
The first toy I made from this book is the bee toy. If I remember right, it's the 2nd project in the book and is a level up from the fish toy, which felt too simple for my extravagant tastes. I assembled my bee out of quilting cotton scraps that had been gifted to me by a member of my Quaker meeting + some pipe cleaners for the antennae + a pair of simple black safety eyes.
This bee was really fun and engaging to make! I enjoyed it immensely. I hid the mess of stitches covering the connection point between the head and body via crocheting a tiny scarf with the colors of the trans pride flag (which is not pictured below, sadly).
This toy will be gifted to @sweet-mephistopheles as soon as I finish sewing the fingerless mitts for him and his partner that were supposed to be part of his Christmas package. Oops! It's amazing how the winter holidays go by far too fast for me to make my gifts on time... every single year.
So as I said in my plans, I have a baby shower and Easter that I’m preparing for.
Right now I have patterns and fabrics picked out. I’m still deciding on trims but I have a pretty good plan.
So to start off we have baby shower.
The top fabric is some baby flannel and the bottom is imperial batiste. Both gifted to me from a crafting friend who wanted to help me on my journey into Heirloom sewing. The flannel will be a Snug Shrug and the batiste will be a smocked baby bonnet following a tutorial by Creations by Michie.
Easter will have two items, three if I have time.
The grey fabric is a thin wool suiting, the blue is a light cotton, and the purple is some more batiste.
The grey is planned to be a pair of Dungarees from Craft World. The blue will be a dress shirt (and yes I know the shirt pattern also has dungarees but I like the other ones better). The shirt might not get done, it’s last on my list as I have options in his closet already.
The purple is going to be an a-line dress using this pattern without the ruffles.
Both outfits will be properly Easter-ified with bunnies. The coveralls are going to have a French knot bunny like this:
And the dress will have bunnies and flowers similar, but not identical, to this dress:
Toddler is getting a cardigan to match her dress too as it’s an early Easter this year and can be quite cold. I’ve had to order the lining and appliqué material which will be coming in tomorrow.
I also ordered 6 yards of light green cotton to make into a baby wrap because this not so little man is killing my back and it will be nice to have the added support.
It may seem like a lot but I have a good amount of time till they’re due and at this point I’m not employed so I’m taking advantage of that.
[ID: Photograph a vintage Singer sewing machine case]
So this is a long shot, but my mother lost the key for this case yonks ago. I'd like to see if I can get a new key for it, so if anyone has any idea what model this bad boy is hmu?
is there such thing as sewingblr? i got my first ever sewing machine and it makes a knocking/rattling noise sometimes when I use it and I don't know why. I've done the basic fixes I've found online and it still makes the noise
You gotta go fast if you want to buy this pillow! I have this Sonic pillow available on my Etsy store, NerdyCreationsStudio, if you’d like to order it, along with other custom pillows!
So I recently came across the concept of petal bags from this blog on WordPress. I also found a video on YouTube of someone making their own petal bag based on the photos in the same post. (And all of this traces back to a pattern from a book by Sheila Marshall titled Elizabethan Needlework Accessories—but I’m much too poor to buy a 40+ USD fashion history book to see the original pattern for myself).
(example photos of a petal bag, taken from the WordPress blog linked above)
I’d love to make a petal bag, but I’m currently knee-deep in projects right now and don’t have a lot of scrap fabric to play with in regards to working out a design. Nevertheless, I want to make a note on this blog about petal bags, since I think making a few sakura-themed ones out of pink fabric would be really cute and a good item to sell at craft fairs, if I ever become skilled enough (and have enough stock) to think about setting up a stall at one.
Hey sewingblr.... or anyone. I have tried on the 2 shorts I've sewn and both got holes in the lower back area because the thread snapped dhdhdb. Is there a way I can fix it?? The fabric isn't stretchy so is that why?
