going from the hylink depictions in fandom and all the zelda games where link dedicates his life to saving and serving her to the skyward sword prequel manga is wild because you meet the first link, and he's just like. idgaf about hylia (the goddess). you gods are just as pathetic and powerless as we humans whom you supposedly reign above. why are you coming to me to fix your problems. why do we even keep you around. i don't want your stupid sword. the bird is cool, though.

#and then he dies and hylia is so enamoured by him she gives up her divinity just to figure out what his damage was <3 #we never find out what he was imprisoned for but i like to think it's blasphemy that got extended to treason (since hylia's ruling family #is directly attached to the goddesses) & they let him out being like 'sorry for the blasphemy and treason allegations. we know better now' #and he's like 'oh yeah no the blasphemy was 100% real. the treason not so much but i am very much blasphemous' #and then he walks off to save the day #skyward sword prequel manga #first link #freya talks loz #wkdhdks i love him very dearly. if i dont laugh i'll cry. i think if anyone deserves a ghibli adaptation it's him #his is the only loz story i've seen so far whose themes even remotely match up with ghibli's anyway imo

y'know just the fact that hylia had to ask link whether he was going to take revenge on the kingdom that held him in contempt or save it from doom was enough of an eye-opening moment as it was (even though hylia already knew what his answer was going to be):

but genuinely if he hadn't already died and could've heard what hylia said about his imprisonment and suffering being "willed by the heavens" because it was "necessary to transform him into the one fit to wield the master sword" i think he might've just been like Actually. Fuck you guys. Revenge it is. because while link DOES stand with his comrades again after his imprisonment and DOES call them his friends even after their betrayal and DOES pray for their happiness above the clouds with all his heart and DID want to take to the sky with them.....the emphasis on the land itself being what link fights for more than the people is absolutely woven into the story here. when he stands above the crowd of people and promises to always defend the land of hylia, he looks out at the mountains, not down at the crowd, and even says:

"Though people's hearts may change with time, this land's beauty, pride and purity never change. If you have need of me... ...then I will forever fight to defend you."

and the amount of times the destruction of the land is emphasized....

"Wicked desire assaulted the world's surface, staining it the color of obsidian... ...and the mountains, the plains, and all that flowed pure on the earth were ruthlessly scoured by fire."

and when the demon king strikes link down and goes on to continue his rampage before hylia eventually seals him away, link doesn't think even once of the people until the red loftwing appears and link asks him if he would show their people to the skies. instead, he thinks this:

"My hometown... The beautiful air... The mountains... The rivers... ...reduced to this. Will this be the last thing I ever see?"

like. he stands with the people even after all they've done to him. he acts as their figurehead. their pawn that they cast aside to torture and rot and only dragged back out because lord dagianis died and they finally decided that a hero was needed again. he fights with them. he calls them his friends despite everything. he hopes for their happiness. but first and foremost, it's the land itself that he fights for, not the people living on it. not really. when he says "people's hearts may change with time" he kind of even acknowledges that—it's a verbal slight against them and all of their fickleness concerning him and his imprisonment and his freedom the instant they were in danger again (same as when he said "It was you—my own people—who said you had no need for a powerful hero. And now that it's convenient for you, you want me to fight?"). and maybe nothing would've changed if he'd heard his suffering was ordained by the gods. maybe his love of the land still would have won over his hatred of the people and the gods doing what they did to him and he still would have fought just the same. but i honestly would not have blamed this dude one bit if he'd just decided to be like "Fuck This. Fuck All Of You." and dipped. he's suffering more than jesus out here

So... I just got done reading the Skyward Sword Prequel Manga by Dark Horse and... my reaction can be summed up to this GIF.

I know Gods don't see things the same way humans do but fucking hell. Even if the manga is non-canon, this is still fucked up. 'Your imprisonment was willed by the heavens. It was meant to make you strong... But because of this, your life was full of suffering.' - Hylia. YOU THINK???!

Being deemed as a traitor, especially in the Middle Ages, isn't something to take lightly. Gets even worse considering how the people views you. If you are a great hero then the backlash can become pure hell.

Hylia, your kindness just helped damn his soul when you look at all the games and what type of hell every incarnation had to deal with. Demise's Curse makes it even worse as any incarnation of Ganon is a bitch to deal with.

Just fucking hell. Now I see why people portray First as a reserved cautious person or him being the Fierce Deity instead of Sky. Cause this manga alone is good enough reason.

Recently finished Skyward Sword HD, then read the prequel manga ^^ I'm a bit in a TLoZ phase (yes I started pretty late, with BotW in 2020), so just after Skyward Sword, I quickly started and completed OoT 3D, and now I plan to play Majora's Mask 3D ^^

2023 Legend of Link Charity Zine: Interest Check!

Hello, everyone! Seeking here. I know that most of you haven’t heard from me in a while, especially those in the Linked Universe/Legend of Zelda fandom, but I have a super exciting announcement to make!  You might be expecting an announcement regarding an upcoming LU Artist Appreciation project, but my plans this summer are a little bit different. Instead, I would like to share with you all a formal interest check for the 2023 Legend of Link Charity Zine! 

The goal of this project is to raise at least $1000 dollars for Doctors without Borders through a Legend of Zelda fanzine! Physical and digital copies of the zine will be sold, as well as tons of extra goodies to help cover production costs and maximize the amount we can donate to charity!  The fanzine will be focused on the 10 mainline Links and their respective games. The Links will be depicted in the zine in chronological order in terms of their first game release date: 

Hero of Hyrule: The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: Adventure of Link

Hero of Legend: A Link to the Past, Link’s Awakening, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons

Hero of Time: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask

Hero of the Winds: Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass

Hero of the Minish: Minish Cap

Hero of Twilight: Twilight Princess 

Hero of Spirits: Spirit Tracks 

Goddess’s Chosen: Skyward Sword

New Hero of Hyrule: A Link Between Worlds 

Hero of the Wild: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom 

Should there be enough interest, a final section may be dedicated to “Bonus Links” such as the Hero of Warriors (Hyrule Warriors) and the Hero of the Four Sword (Four Sword Adventures) and the First Hero (prequel hero of the Skyward Sword manga). Each Link will have 4 pages in the zine (with the front and back of one sheet being counted as TWO pages), meaning that the zine will have 4 cover pages (front and back of the front cover = 2, front and back of the back cover = 2, 2+2 = 4) and 40 interior pages.  More information about the theme, timeline, and production schedule of the zine can be found in the proposal document below!

Got these lads some better references! Not complete ones, but they're still pretty good.

Here are the 8 Links I'm planning on including! I have general characterization concepts for all the others, but they were being kinda annoying designs. I might include em as I continue to figure out this AU, but for now here's what I got!

Our very first hero! I don't really consider the SS prequel manga canon here so Sky's the very first holder of the Hero's spirit. He's a very kind soul, protective of those he cares for and holding the endless determination and courage of any hero.

After the end of Skyward Sword, Sky's taken up a bit of an 'ambassador to the surface' type role, educating those who've come down with while Zelda spends as much time as she can with her family on Skyloft. Though the scars from his fight with Demise still twinge, Sky's happy to move forward with his life on the surface.

Minish is our youngest member, but that doesn't mean you can underestimate him. Minish is quiet, playful, and endlessly curious. He's the best spy this chain has, able to shrink down to the size of a mouse and be completely invisible to everyone but fellow children.

After saving Zelda from being encased in stone and having her light force drained, Minish simply seeks to spend his time enjoying his childhood with his best friend and learning to forge a sword as good as the four sword.

Mask is our resident angst, his life has been far too hard. Mask is mysterious, closed off, and talented. With the body of a teenager and the mind of a young adult, this lad has plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

Resuming his travels after Termina, Mask finds himself looking for somewhere to belong. He's travelled to Labrynna, Holodrum, Koradai, and yet the only place he really felt any sense of family remains in that strange war with Tune and Captain. Perhaps, someday, he'll find his way back to them.

Tune's our resident navigator! He can read and create maps and starcharts like no other, plus he knows his way around a boat. Despite the more pirat-y aesthetic, Tune's really a sweetheart. Sure, he enjoys finding abandoned treasure and sailing, but he's hardly a ruthless bounty hunter or thief. He just loves meeting people, and wants to help anywhere he can. A trait practically required for the hero life.

After his adventures, Tune's living a life of travel on the Great Sea. He has his own boat, but broadly he sails with Tetra, the two finding buried treasures from Hyrule. He's always had that itch to go somewhere, to do something, and maybe he's about to get exactly what he wants.

Wolf's a bit of a mysterious edgy man himself, but this time it's all appearances. Our resident furry is just a big huggable rancher with a protective streak when it comes to his family. He's amazing with animals, and with the help of a certain amazing nose, he can track basically anything.

I'm diverging from canon a lot here. Midna's never shattered the mirror of twilight in this universe, she's just not around in the light world because it would hurt to be anything more than a shadow there. Instead, after their adventure Wolf and her hang out frequently. Wolf's pretty content with his lot in life, he's got his family, his home, and his best friend. Really, what more could he ask for?

Unabashed favorite character alert, Four's a bit of an asshole. Like, they're very heroic and frankly, often right, but they've still got an arrogance problem. They're fiercely loyal and incredibly smart, and will take the role as supposed leader because frankly, no one else wants the title.

After returning the Four Sword with Vaati and Ganon completely obliterated, Four's gone back to their life as a knight. There's still a fierce purple ache in their chest for a certain Shadow, but the teal confidence easily shoves that to the side in favor of being the perfect warrior. Now, Four's rising through the ranks of Hyrule's guard, ready for whatever challenge comes next.

Wild fits their name very well. They're quick to explore every mountain and valley, loot every chest, and find every korok. Incredibly different from the Link from before the Calamity, they share memories but not so much experiences. Wild is the best archer in the group, even without their champion ability.

I can't quite decide whether I want Wild to be pre or post TOTK, but it doesn't make too terribly much of a difference. After his adventure he continues to explore Hyrule and the lands beyond it. He's verrryyy close with his Zelda, and the two like to do a bit of mad science with Purah every so often. He's happy with his new lease in life, but if the chance comes to explore something new? Well, Wild's definitely going to take it.

Cap's here! And he's a bit of a mess. Traumatized from his fights with Cia and Dark Link, Captain has trouble being confident in himself at all anymore. He's always been naturally confident, but ever since that first battle with Dark, Captain's been suppressing that part of himself. He's a very skilled leader and tactician, with the most experience working with a large group.

After the war Captain.. didn't really know what to do with himself. His friends had left, and there was no longer anything to fight against. He decided to dedicate himself to being a guard, but he still felt a little empty. He's never really moved on from the events of the war, but maybe soon he'll return to some old friends.

HEAD IN MY HANDS.......imagine being wrongfully imprisoned for four years (STRUNG UP IN CHAINS IN THE DUNGEON) and then all your old brothers-in-arms who disavowed you showing up and being like "heyyyy ummmm sorry about all that can you go kill the demon king now <3" (LITERALLY. "Our little...misunderstanding has been resolved. Your premonition of danger was correct. We all understand that now. You are the only one who can drive off the demon king and protect Hylia!" [<-hylia right here referring to the kingdom named hylia not the goddess]) and the fact that link DOES choose to fight alongside his old friends he DOES choose to try to save hylia instead of take his (honestly deserved) revenge against it for its injustice against him but it's his love for the land specifically that motivates him:

(Link) "My dear land of Hylia! Though people's hearts may change with time, this land's beauty, pride, and purity never change. If you have need of me... ...then I will forever fight to defend you."

Mostly I’d keep the manga the same. I love the plot and I feel like the authors did a good job cramming all that into such a short work.

HOWEVER there some things that drive me nuts. Like the master sword. It should be the goddess sword at that point.

Also I’ve got mixed feelings on how Hylia was handled. For instance, her promise to reincarnate Link (and herself). It takes away from the power of Demise’s curse at the end of Skyward Sword. And this manga was meant to be a prequel to that game so…

I don’t think he would’ve wasted breath on that if he’d already known those two were destined to come back again anyway.

So I’d change that. Maybe she promises they would be reborn if Demise breaks free. So reincarnation isn’t official until Demise curses them

And speaking of Hylia…I’d definitely make Hylink explicitly canon. And I’d allude to a backstory between the two of them. Because I definitely got vibes from the manga but it’s hard to tell if they’ve actually got feelings for each other (especially on Link’s side).

The only other thing would be to show how close Link and Orville are. Just a little more. It could just be one panel of Link placing a hand on Orville’s shoulder with a fond smile (or vice versa). Or then fighting side by side in one scene. Idk how exactly I’d show it. But I love their dynamic and need more.

if he's a fanon character then who originally came up with him? also can you just give me a little First lore because I see him mentioned a lot in the LU fandom but I don't actually know much about him at all

The 'local First whisperer' got me gigglin' 😂

He's actually from the Skyward Sword manga or rather a prequel to Skyward Sword by Akira Himekawa. Case n' point of how he got his nickname. First. He's the first Link. There's a lot of back n forth between people of if he's canon or fanon really. It's honestly up to your own opinion of whether or not he is.

While Sky technically started the reincarnation cycle, Sky is a reincarnated First due to Hylia. I could get the lore a lil' mixed up (it's been a while, don't @ me /lh), so anyone who sees an error. Correct me lol.

First lived down below the clouds, way before Hylia sent them to live there, away from the dangers of Demise. First was a knight for the land of Hylia until it all came crashing down when he was framed for an unknown crime for an unknown reason by a lord. He resided in prison for 4 years until the people came to free him from his chains after that said lord's death.

Yada, yada, a reunitement between the goddess Hylia and him. He is the first to wield the master sword, but he believed that he could not wield it due to him being imprisoned for four years. Hylia tells him it is up to the master sword to decide on whether he is impure or not.

Demise appears and the battle has begun, it went for a week until First faces him and becomes heavily wounded due to one hit given by Demise. Before he passes on, he gives the master sword that was blessed by the 3 legendary dragons, Faron, Eldin, and Lanayru, to Hylia to send the Hylians and the kingdom to the skies with a single sweep of the said sword. He stayed behind, gravelly injured, watching as the land rises to the sky before passing away. Goddess Hylia ends up sealing away Demise before admitting that she planned the imprisonment from the start so that "he could be strong enough to save the world."

Hylia decided she would be reborn with her hero, she revokes her title and ensures his heroic spirit will live on forever.

As for his personality, uhmm, some of us had to work with what we were given from the manga. We do know that all the Links are little mischievous shits, feral goblins up to no good so he is the reasoning of it even as he appears to be chivalrous and no bullshit, but we all beg to differ lmao.
