i don't think youth of may is a drama that should be seen through the lens of a person who's a fan of the involved actors beyond their performance... it's a sad and tragic ending and it broke my heart but i can't help but think that the ending we got is on the microscopic level because we only followed myunghee and heetae's journey and the ordinary people around them. but the amount of blood that flowed that may is much bigger than anything we could fathom while watching the drama. there is bravery and courage in protecting your loved ones no matter the outcome and there is bravery and courage in surviving and living through the pain of loss and grief for years.

i, too, would have wanted some characters' narratives to be developed further but considering the 12 eps run-time, i think the message the drama wanted to convey from the beginning remained consistent and was wrapped in a realistic and respectful manner. no one's death and no one's pain was made a spectacle and at no point while watching the drama did i feel like the writer was exploiting the characters' pain to make me feel for them. myunghee remained by heetae's side all these years to protect him everytime he wanted to end his life, she became the ocean tide that pushed him back to the memory of that may, refusing to let him die and wishing for him to live. so heetae became a doctor carrying his pain with him but still living while saving others... heetae is the embodiment of the ordinary people who live towards tomorrow without drowning in their sorrow even after living through such a brutal and tragic may, and there is love, bravery and courage in that

#youth of may #rambling bc i've seen ppl say that heetae's narrative wasn't explored enough and he lived with nothing but pain #but myunghee did too? #all the characters in the show and the ppl at that time got their lives stolen during that may #nitpicking like this knowing the historical context is a bit iffy to me personally #especially if it's not constructive criticism but just complaints abt lack of X actor #if anyone's narrative was not explored enough it'd be sooryun #she was introduced as a joan d'arc symbol but was given no characterization #all we've seen of her is tied to her family #if not she's myunghee's friend / soochan's little sister / the protégée of a police officer who saved her #like i said there's only so much that can be done in 12 eps #the drama was good overall #drama thoughts
