i feel like a lot of (the majority of?) misreads of jackie's character stem from people taking everything shauna says about her in her journal and during their last fight at face value. she is an unreliable narrator people!!! that's literally the point that's exactly what makes it so tragic. that jackie died because of it and it wasn't even true it was a build up of shauna's character flaws and her unhealthy ways of coping with both her insecurities and her feelings for jackie that became so intertwined she didn't know how to deal with either of those things because of their conflicting nature. because shauna was 1) a teenage girl 2) not a very good person.

i think the general audience really, really underestimates the weight of the scene where jackie reads the journal for the first time. you have to understand, she genuinely thought that everything between them was fine until that point, because shauna gave her literally no reasons to think otherwise. like, "maybe shauna is dealing with some personal things but it's nothing we can't get through together". and then she reads it and it turns out their whole relationship has a giant fucking crack at its' foundation she had no idea of and shauna was the one who made her believe everything was fine for god knows how long because she never once communicated these feelings to her. jackie is realizing her only lifeline is fake, she is realizing the person she loves unconditionally hates her. which, again, shauna actually doesn't, but remember the words in that journal and try to imagine how would you have reacted to your best friend saying something like that about you behind your back when you were seventeen. like, think of your absolute closest person in the world, and imagine finding a journal of theirs where they say all the things shauna says about jackie about you. and they also fucked your boyfriend but they don't even like him. and they double down on it when you confront them and they find even worse things to call you in person, somehow. once again, you thought everything was completely fine before this. yeah.

shauna was the calculating one in this relationship, which is what got jackie killed, while jackie was nothing but sincere in her feelings for shauna, which is also what got her killed. because shauna isn't the kind of person who can process these kinds of feelings when they come her way.
