Imperial Crown of Russia or the Great Imperial Crown is one of the most outstanding examples of ‘regalia.’

Regalia is referred to as the emblems or insignia of royalty that survived through history.

It is a precious cultural heritage treasure — a well-documented and well-dated piece of jewellery.

Regalia jewellery pieces offer historians great insight into the gemstones used, their historical market values, and occurrences.

It also helps gemologists and jewellers to know how the gems were named and set on the piece of jewellery.

While royal crowns were usually made for individual rulers and later broken up, some of this royal regalia could be found in museums today.

Here are some interesting facts about one such royal artifact, the great Imperial Crown of Russia.

The Great Imperial Crown was made for Catherine the Great’s coronation, as the Russian Empress in 1762 AD, by Georg Friedrich Eckart and Jérémie Pauzié.

It is set with 4936 diamonds with a total weight of 2858 ct, 75 natural pearls, and a large 398.72 ct red spinel, historically known as “balas ruby,” which is among the largest ever reported in the literature, most probably from Badakhshan (today’s Tajikistan).

Imperial Crown of Russia was first worn by the Russian empress Catherine, followed by the subsequent seven emperors of her dynasty.

This royal regalia has remained a permanent fixture on the royal head.

This priceless artifact has been passed on to eight members of the Romanov family:

Catherine II, Peter III, Paul I, Alexander I, Nikolai I, Alexander II, Alexander III, and Nikolai II.

The Romanov dynasty survived till 1917, yet the crown publically appeared for the last time in 1906 at the opening ceremony of the first State Duma.

The crown was estimated to be worth $52 million in 1920.

The stones that the royal regalia comprises were sold off by the Bolsheviks and replaced in 1985.

Later in 1998, the crown was moved to the fund of Kremlin’s Diamond. Subsequently, it was declared to be priceless in a literal sense.

📷 : A modern replica version of the Imperial Crown was made in 2012 by Kristall-Smolensk, as part of the Jewellery project "Creation of Imperial Crown of Russia in Modern Interpretation" to celebrate the 400 years of the Romanov Dynasty and the 250 years of the Imperial Crown, as well as the 50th anniversary of the diamond industry in Russia.

Using white gold (original used silver) and 11,426 russian diamonds (original crown had 4,936 diamonds) from Alrosa with a total weight of 1180 ct, including 74 cultured pearls and a 384.71ct pear-shaped double rose cut purple tourmaline on top of the crown.

The spinel in the replica was replaced with a unique natural red tourmaline with a mass of about 400 karats.

The Côte de Bretagne, Louvre Museum

The Red Spinel, known as the Côte-de-Bretagne, is the oldest gem in the French Crown Jewels collection, originally belonged to Anne of Brittany & her mother Marguerite de Foix (c. 1480).

It was later shaped into a fat "Oriental" dragon with flames by Jacques Guay, the gemstone engraver of Louis XV.

During the French Revolution, it was stolen from the Royal Storehouse. It miraculously surfaced in London in 1797, and was restored to the French collection.

Royal Tiaras Highlights: Crown Princess Mary’s Necklace Tiara

The tiara was auctioned at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen and purchased by Crown Princess Mary on March 1, 2012. The auction catalogue said: “A diamond jewellery set comprising a necklace and a pair of later ear screws set with numerous rose and old mine-cut diamonds, circular-cut rubies and spinels, mounted in 14k gold and silver. L. necklace 47 cm. L. ear screws 3 cm. One stone missing. Circa 1900-1910.” The set is believed to have been auctioned for 4,000-5,350 euros.

John Graff, Gold Hunter Case with Monogram and Coat of Arms of the Nawab of Bhawalpur Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi IV, Circa 1890, Switzerland. Enamel, rubies and diamonds, 18k gold.

This extraordinary Minute Repeating pocket watch is a historically important timepiece and masterpiece of the horological arts. The watch features in its case the portrait of the Nawab of Bhawalpur, Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi IV, and is signed JG. John Graff (1836-1902), the foremost Swiss portrait painter in enamels of the late 19th century.

The front of the case is superbly ornamented with the initials SMKA (Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abassi) and each of the letters, outlined in gold, is inset with precious stones – the letters S and M are inset with diamonds while the letter K is inset with emeralds and A with Burmese rubies. These rest on a background of red champlevé enamel. The circular case cover is further ornamented along its internal diameter with a sequence of diamonds at each of the hourly points and, between these can be seen a sequence of two emeralds flanking a central ruby. Beyond this circular border, a second circular register features a spectacular arrangement of diamonds.

The back of the case is decorated with the official blazon of the State of Bhawalpur, which consists of a shield, as usual in sable (black), three palm branches palewise in fess (gold), or, in chief four double quatrefoils argent seeded as diamonds on a gold background. On the crest, and above the shield, the helmet and gorge of a suit of armour (diamonds on a gold background); above that, on the upper part, a double branch in gold and, at the top, a seven-pointed star of diamonds on gold resting on a crescent argent. At the sides of the blazon as supporters, two pelicans, rousant argent billed and membered are shown with rubies for eyes and standing on an undulating branch of emeralds and a Burmese ruby. Below that, the escroll in white enamel with the family name ‘Abbasi’ in Urdu.

Behind the case front, the movement is a wonder of complications, at the time considered at the forefront of technical innovation – a perpetual calendar, a Moon phase, and a split-second chronograph as well as a Minute repeater. On a gold background, the dial contains radial Roman numerals with a bead-set diamond between each. The outer minute scale and other dial numerals are Arabic. Bead-set Burmese rubies are seen beneath the day and date dials.

Behind the obverse side of the case, the portrait of the Nawab shows him in three-quarter angle and dressed in ceremonial red costume with gold braiding. Around his neck is a heavy necklace of pearls between pairs of alternating emeralds and rubies. On his head, he wears a Bhawalpuri turban with cascading ropes of pearls and rubies. On the perimeter of the circular portrait, we observe the initials JG (John Graff). Encircling the portrait, on the gold frame, a sequence of arches are delicately engraved in millegrain design.

Above the case, a heavy pendant emerges and leads to the segmented crown; above that, the circular bow is ornamented with a braided surface.

The Nawab of Bhawalpur, Sadiq Muhammad Khan Abbasi IV (1862-99) was a young prince with immense wealth and eclectic taste. He famously commissioned an extraordinary silver bed by Christofle with moving automatons of four nude life-size bronze ladies representing European beauties, which winked and fanned him as music played. He was also a refined aesthete of the Muslim dynasty that claimed descent from the Abbasid caliphate. A great collector of gemstones, famous for his collection of Mughal spinels and rare artefacts; his glamorous and flamboyant attire and coiffure were a seamless synthesis of mysticism and haute couture.

I also want to say that I plan to use this as a Cover for a future Chapter for either one or both the stories I'm working on over at Quotev, if I'm able to, I will have this drawing appear as a Cover for both "Falling For The Angel In Disguise" and "Spinelluva Boss: Home Is Where The Spinel Is", those two stories are for a Mature Audience Readers Only, and might be a bit 18+ but it's more of a I guess mild 18+ like some scenes are not as heavy 18+ I guess...I mean I might be starting to view myself a bit of a "Gray-Aroace" which might still will use the flux in there, but I can still try to write mature scenes, even if they might not be 100% perfect...and I'm okay if not many end up reading those two stories but I'm glad some do like them. the two stories will still be on hiatus until I can finally get around to work on the next chapters for them.]

anyway, I know that that version of The Heavenly-Father by Voidseeker, has four floating eyes....

so this version of The Earthly-Mother has Three, and she has eight wings, six of them are just floating on each side of her...

while the seventh and eight wings are on that crown type halo that has a Emerald in it...the whole "Omni-Family Bio" is possibly all the bio I could add for this, well besides having it say what inspired this Alternate Version's creation...

also if some have heard and learned about the Archeia, know that it could make sense that Lucifer's Feminine Counterpart would go Missing In Action, and I'm just guessing part of her name.

I mean even if I had started to self-nickname myself:

"Eveningstar Princess" but her and me would be separate, but she could be The Archeia [REDACTED] Eveningstar.

and the "Earth Angel Eveningstar Princess" that is added into the Omni-Family Bio thing, can be a different version of like a Ficto-Counterpart of myself...either one is fine, even if it is a OC version that is fully different from me....

yeah, still added that Cain is the 117th Great-Grandpa, Seth is also a a Grandpa too, but I'm not 100% sure about the number of Greats...

those two are still technically Grunkles as well...

you know, since Gran-Gran Eve is both their Moms, and at least it was only Cain and Seth's distant descendants that ended up together and not those who were a bit too close to the family tree...

also I would be insulted if Susan called me a "Blue Blood",

that's "Purple Blood" to you Susan, cause not all my Ancestors are Royalty....I mean yeah technically still blue blood, but I'm still gonna identify as purple blood, because of my non-royal ancestors.

is it weird to Fan-Headcanon that Sera from Hazbin Hotel, might really be Archeia Seraphina, but goes by "Sera" for short...

I mean I guess if it did turn out to be canon, the other Archeia wouldn't 100% agree with her on how she has been running things, and chose to leave with The Earthly-Mother to try to fix the balance between the Masculine and Feminine Energies, as well as keeping the barrier and quarantine in the Earthly Queendom up, because half of it got infected and later became what is known as The Seven Rings Of Hell, yeah it wouldn't be canon in Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss, but that is what Fanon Timeline and Alternate Universes are for.

I still think that in real life, in The Celestial Realm...

because of the stuff that went down many centuries ago, with the whole putting the Patriarchy as the most important and the whole viewing the Matriarchy as beneath the Patriarchy and not very important at all...

but it isn't like many will accept the truth, plus if they did, they would need to do so by their free will and because they choose to.

I still want to give the Lucifer from this Universe, the cold hands to face punishment....I guess I could of added Jesus in this as well...

but he may have not been born yet, when that whole mess with the imbalance started up, plus it could be possible that The Heavenly-Father & Earthly-Mother are still technically together but at the same time, separated.....you know, like when someone's parents are still married but separated...though, at least some don't find out that during their parents separation, their Dad did freaking sleep with his ex-wife and got back together with her behind his current wife and the baby daughter he wasn't there to see the birth of...

there can be different type of Daddy issues, and well some can have Mommy Issues as well, or Renny Issues...you know, Nonbinary Parent who's pronouns are They/Them...

for Nonbinary Parents who are Nonbinary-Man or Nonbinary-Woman, the pronouns are both They/Them & He/Him (Nonbinary-Man) and They/Them & She/Her (Nonbinary-Woman)....

there are different types of Nonbinary, not just one.

I doubt Peepaw Adam (the Hazbin Hotel version) ever met Earthly-Mother or knows there is a Goddess as well.

if Zestial is as old as some characters make him out to be,

just picture Earthly-Mother is visiting The Pentagram City in the Pride Ring, and she spots Zestial who everyone is either running from or hiding from...and all of a sudden she yells out

"Little Zesty, is that you?!!"

if I'm going to call him by that cute nickname, than why not a Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss AU OC Ficto-Alternate version of The Earthly-Mother...

just picture him embarrassed being called by the nickname "Little Zesty" and at first he is really mad but then he sees who it is that called him that.

and the next thing we know, Zestial is being hugged and has his head being smothered into her bosom.

all while the Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss version of The Earthly-Mother is saying things like "it's been so long my little Zesty!",

"are you eating well...?", "no one is bullying my sweet little Zesty, are they...?", and "oh, I missed you my little Zesty!"

of course that idea is more in a Fanon type way...

The Earthly-Mother in this drawing, might look younger than Zestial but is in fact much older than him, so of course she is still going to treat him like he is still his younger self and treat him like he is a baby.

she could have herself appear in a smaller default form, so if she did hug Zestial to her bosom, he would be bending over while she has his head held hostage. XD

she would probably do that to Charlie's Dad as well...that should be funny to see.

and unlike Zestial, Charlie's Dad Lucifer is shorter than him...

so it is possible Charlie's Grandmother is taller than Charlie, and possibly being maybe around the same height (at least in her default form) as Valentino if not a inch shorter than him...but she could be much taller in her other form.

of course in a Fanon Timeline, where this version of Earthly-Mother lives in...she will be really happy to see Zestial, Lucifer and the others, who she views as her Babies....and it wasn't like she plan for them to end up in the quarantine part of the Earthly Queendom...

like it could turn out only some are allowed to go inside and well through the barrier, like some of those being The Archeia and Earthly-Mother herself.

and while in this universe, The Archeia & Archangel are in a perfect Masculine & Feminin Union that has to do with their different color twin flames....but as for their Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss Counterparts, probably not so much...

the Archeia in a AU/Fanon Timeline of both shows, have been possibly trying to fix what had been broken, well if Sera is one of the Archeia but also a Seraphim, of course it could be possible she hasn't spoken to the other Archeia in centuries.

plus they could of left things off in a bitter parting...

all the Archeia left with The Earthly-Mother to try to protect both Earth and Earthly Queendom, to try to contain what had caused the imbalance in the first place, which in a Fanon Timeline it was never really Lucifer, it was caused by the imbalance of The Masculine and Feminine...which for all we know may have to do with the Annunaki from those times...

Homo-Erectus came first before Homo-Sapiens, and it could be possible there could of been other Adams & Eves, but they were part of different sectors of gardens.

Adam, Lilith and Eve were from the Eden Garden Sector.

but I'm still gonna have that new theory that has to do with it being possible there were a Patriarch-Adam & Matriarch-Eve that came way before Adam, Lilith and Eve who are possibly the true Patriarch-Father & Matriarch-Mother Humans of Humanity, before the Annunaki came and possibly were involved with the imbalance happening and made the Patriarchy more important than it's Feminine Counterpart instead of being it's equals...

also want to say that even though Adam from Eden Garden, turns out to be white, doesn't mean that other Adams & Eves from different Garden Sectors wont come from different races, that goes with the theory that there were other Gardens...but I can't force others to agree or believe it may be true. they will have to want to believe it by their own free will and choice.

I do know that my Ancestors are all different, and not all of them will be the same, it is still awesome to learn that Lady Godiva is my Ancestor-Grandma.

yeah and it is funny to learn that the whole "Peeping-Tom" word came from that story which involves her.

also if "Hell Is Forever" like it is in the song that Adam sings,

I would so play the song "F**k You" by Lily Allen.

also give Adam & Lute the double birdy....meaning I want to flip them off.

even if that fan theory about Blitzo being Adam's Half-Reincarnation turns out to be true and canon, because Adam's Soul splits into two, one stays like the original him, and becomes a Sinner and the other half goes and gets reborn as a Imp that will end up being named Blitzo...

I wouldn't mind giving Blitzo a hug, I mean you know if I do feel like giving someone a hug then I will...

also it could be possible that while in our universe, Adam and Eve were Gray-Parents...they had to learn to be better throughout the years they were alive. meaning Adam in his younger days when he was first married to Lilith and then Eve, he was a immature jerk.

and who knows how many years it took him to out grow that part of himself...with how he was partly the cause of Lilith's Fall...

well him and those Three Angels, and once again that is still messed up...

that isn't love or any form of empathy at all, you can NOT force someone to go back to someone and just be okay with the Toxic-Marriage that isn't willing to fix and work out their problems the right way...

it could be possible that there will be slight differences from our universe and Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss Universe, and we don't know how much will be different...

I'm still going to fan-headcanon that Lilith never went to Hell, and switched places with Eve (after she had Cain, Abel and Seth...)

and part of Lilith's deal was that her appearance change to look like Eve, and Eve to look like her, and Lucifer doesn't find out about the switch until both him and Eve fully fall into what will be known as Hell...

and yeah, many years and centuries later Eve, who goes by the alias "Lilith" ends up having a daughter name Charlie...

even if this fan theory gets debunked, it can still work in Fanon.

anyway, I did the best that I could in on this drawing which once again was inspired by Voidseeker's God Design as well as the art by Nicholas Roerich.

so once again I will be using this over at Quotev in the future, but please respect the whole "do not reblog without permission" for this, and I will have this drawing for both here and for over there...

and I know it there is a very small chance some will find this design awesome enough to want to draw fanart of it, and I'm okay if not everyone ends up doing that...

Feathered mist; silken rose petals — The tangled ropes of blushed spinel alyssum wove us our wreathed crowns of love. Fire’s pearl ash; stars aglow with us — Glacial, time froze still, blessing us, alone, a stolen moment of heaven.

Stars of moonstone; the moon of quartz — The candlelight in the cabin flickered, dancing, as the time ticked away, Talking hours on the window’s ledge… Jade ivy bound the rusted hands of time as saphh’rine mist veiled its cruel face.

Okay White diamond is made from the essence of a dying star that had fallen into a great kingdom. Yellow diamond is made from lightning that strikes a battlefield full of blood. Blue diamond is made on the same Day as yellow as the rain that falls around the weeping soldiers morning their comrades. Pink diamond is made from humanity it's love it's hate and the earth.

The dark kingdom is where white diamond blue diamond and yellow diamond would start the Creation of gems for their kingdom also white probably abused yellow and blue. Tidbit, the diamonds in their original and their full diamond forms are more like biblically accurate and I will dive into that a bit more later. Pink diamond is Created shortly after this starts happening.

Also, pink diamond is the opposite yet. Also the same as white as blue is the opposite yet the same as yellow.

Pink staged her rebellion after she couldn't get through to white and managed to convince blue and yellow that what they were doing to the planet that they were made on. It was wrong and that humanity deserved to be protected not destroyed in order for conquest.

So the joined effort the diamonds Poofed and bubbled white away in the dark kingdom to rot until well later.

Pink or as I'm gonna call her for now. Rose,yellow, and blue take on more humanoid forms and creates what will be this version of the Kingdom of Corona.

Decades after the kingdom has been completely in its prime rose falls in love with greg and has a kid with him. Also, the diamonds are gonna have human last names so that they can fit in more humans. So their last names are universe.

And greg and rose got married.

A part of pink That was like white was unhappy and wanting to stick to life while she was giving birth to steven. And as the tear had fallen From her eye and landed on A hibiscus flower, the butterflies of her distress and growing flower from her healing powers grew into what is going to be this kind of off pink diamond that is our version of mother Gothole. This version does not have a gem, but instead a flower where her gem would be and is she is noticeably more dissaturated, then pink.

This off pink or is I'm gonna call her Mother diamond fled but soon realized that she was decaying and the butterflies were leaving her so she went to go steal the gem out of Steven. But when she touched him she felt herself being rejuvenated especially as he started crying.

Also, there are incantations in this. For the full diamonds it helps them affect humans and as for Steven. It helps his powers become even more strong. And Steven can use white Diamonds incantations, as well as his own. Blue and yellow, can use each others, but they can't use stevens, it's a whole thing.

So Mother diamond stole Steven and took him away to a tower that was constructed as a little base for the crystal gems back in the war era.

Where he was raised till he was sixteen years old so movie Steven and early future Steven Age.

Greg would move in with the diamonds after this happened as they were all grieving after what happened. Also The Kingdom was built where pink's garden was so once they built the kingdom, they got spinel and explained to her what happened and you know stuff.

Connie In this universe is a thief like Flynn. But she doesn't show that she can afford college so that her mother will be proud of her. Her mom's not a bad mom and they say you. It's just she's under a lot of pressure from her mom. So she steals the crown that Belonged to pink diamond and goes to hide and Stephen's tower one. She's being chased. Also, she is mask. So nobody knows who she is when she's a thief.(I didn't know exactly what to do with Connie so if you can figure out something better then good job 👍)

And as for animal sidekicks, we're gonna have lion instead of Pascal and lions gonna be our kind of both ourMaximus and Pascal. Steven pleads with Connie to take him to see The floating lights that always appear on his birthday. She agrees reluctantly since this wasn't our plans but she Quickly learns not to regret it as he brings a new chaos to her life that she didn't know she needed.

Much like repunzel is in the movie. Steven is fascinated with the world around him as he had never seen it before. And even found it much more beautiful than his mother had described and much less dangerous than she had to.

It was around when they would have their snugly duckling scene (which i'm still figuring out if I want that to stay the same or if I wanted to be a bit different) where he would kind of start to doubt his mother.

Also, he does not have glowing hair. So when they are starting to drown, his panic overwhelms him and he starts the glow pink. He has his version of The healing incantation is also death Incantation And some other ones (but i'm working on that.)

Also, this AU is not just going to be the movie of tangled. But also the series cause I think it's funny and why not. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with this idea. I might draw about it. But i'm not sure if I want to write It's so if I were post This anywhere then feel free to take this idea just credit me at least. Please, I don't want my ideas stolen and not being credited.

Tiaras of the future Queen Mary

I love a good list and @duchessofostergotlands requested one of the tiaras that Mary will wear as queen. As usual I had a lot to say.

Crown Jewels

Queen Caroline Amelie's Emerald Tiara

Denmark is unusual among modern monarchies in that they still have wearable jewelry in their crown jewels. There is a diamond set, a pearl and ruby set, and of course the beautiful emerald parure. This tiara cannot be taken outside of Denmark and is only worn by the queen. I really hope Mary wears it for her first official portrait as queen.

Major Tiaras: Non-Restricted

Princess Louise's Pearl Poiré Tiara

This tiara has only been worn by Queen Margrethe during her reign but previously was worn by crown princesses and princesses. It is a very important tiara but I wouldn't mind Queen Mary loaning this one occasionally to other people like Christian's future wife.

Queen Désirée's Ruby Parure Tiara

Queen Ingrid kept this tiara even after her husband passed and then left it to Crown Prince Frederik for his future wife so it was never worn by Queen Margrethe. I expect Crown Princes Mary will continue wearing this tiara for now as the parure was extensively remodeled to suit her. When Christian marries, she may decide to pass it on to his wife establishing it as the de facto crown princess tiara, keep wearing it herself, or ideally keep wearing it while also loaning it the future crown princess.

Minor Tiaras

We don't yet know how Queen Margrethe will handle passing on her jewelry. In other countries with recent abdications, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands still attends tiara events but Queen Paola of Belgium and Queen Sofia of Spain do not. If Margrethe decides to keep attending them she may hold on to some of these for a while.

Grand Duchess Louise of Baden's Palmette Tiara

This isn't my favorite tiara in the Danish vault because of the way it ends so abruptly instead of tapering off. Queen Mary's going to have to pull off some great tiara hair to cover that up.

Crown Princess Margaret's Turquoise Daisy Tiara

Queen Mary looks good in turquoise but I'm really looking forward to seeing this tiara on Princess Isabella and Princess Josephine.

Queen Ingrid's Floral Aigrette Tiara

I've loved the way Queen Margrethe played around with this tiara but I am looking forward to Queen Mary putting it back on a tiara frame like Queen Ingrid wore it.

Queen Margrethe's Naasut Tiara

Queen Margrethe was given this tiara by Greenland in 2012 and I have been waiting for day it is worn by Queen Mary. I think the delicate gold flowers are really going to look great against her dark hair.

Queen Margrethe gave this tiara to Crown Princess Mary as a wedding gift and Mary later had optional pearls added.

Ruby & Spinel Necklace Tiara

Mary bought herself this tiara at an auction and debuted it 2015. I think it was a very smart move because it was only 8050 EUR (probably less than some of her gowns) and it will be a great piece for her children to wear in the future.

Every country and monarch handles jewelry a little differently. Queen Margrethe gave each of her daughters-in-law a tiara but did not share any of her tiaras with them. She did share with her nieces (the daughters of her two sisters) when her sisters didn't have enough tiaras to loan them for events. I would like to see the future King Frederik X and Queen Mary change how the jewelry is dispersed.

First of all they need to stop giving away jewelry. The mainline has already lost the Queen Alexandrine's Diamond Drop Tiara to the Countess of Frederiksborg and Princess Dagmar's Diamond Floral Tiara to Princess Marie. Those are both beautiful, versatile tiaras that would have served the family well in the future. In the previous generation, Princess Benedikte was given Queen Sofia's Star & Pearl Tiara and her Floral Birthday Tiara made from other jewelry and Queen Anne Marie was given Crown Princess Margaret's Khedive Tiara and her Antique Corsage Tiara made from other jewelry. There's no reason to give away tiaras anymore to people whose descendants will have little reason to wear them.

Then to make up for not giving away any jewelry there needs to be more sharing! I don't want to see the same person wear the same tiara to every event. Queen Mary will have the Emerald Tiara exclusively and then may choose to keep the Pearl Poiré Tiara and Ruby Parure Tiara to herself but everything else should be shared among her daughters, daughters-in-law, and other members of the extended Danish Royal Family. It would make things so much more interesting.

HEAVY IS THE HEAD

[Queen's Dressing Room, Buckingsim Palace 3:28 PM WST]

[Palace Aide]: Does it fit alright, Your Majesty? We can always have it adjusted more.

Queen Katherine: (in a daze)

[Palace Aide]: Ma'am?

Queen Katherine: No, no. The fit is just fine. I... Do you suppose I could borrow it for a couple of days? Just to practice...

[Palace Aide]: Borrow it, ma'am? From whom? If it's not yours, whose is it?

Queen Katherine: It IS quite heavy.

[Palace Aide]: It weighs 2.07 kilos. It is made of solid gold and is set with colored stones (rubies, amethysts, sapphires, yellow and colorless topazes, tourmalines, zircons, aquamarines and one peridot, one garnet and one spinel) and diamonds. It is also composed of a purple velvet toque with an ermine band. It has several symbols: four crosses pattées, four fleur-de-lys and two arches but also a small orb that represents the world topped by a cross.

Queen Katherine: It's not as easy at it looks.

Prince Phillip: (laughing) Don't tip over!

Queen Katherine: "Thank you, son!"

Prince Phillip: Will I get to wear it on my coronation?

Queen Katherine: You will but let's hope that day is in many, many years!

(Rainier enters)

Prince Rainier: (annoyed) Everyone out, please!

Queen Katherine: (shocked) Rainier!

Prince Rainier: Leave us! Thank you.

(Everyone exits)

Queen Katherine: What's this all about?

Prince Rainier: I was just embarrassed, yet again.

Queen Katherine: Embarrassed how?

Prince Rainier: I just had lunch with Anthony and he was so excited knowing you were granting their child powers when it's born. What is he talking about, Kate? How does he know you're a spellcaster?

Queen Katherine: Rainier...

(Rainier exits)

Queen Katherine: Lara came over the other day upset about having to delay their pregnancy announcement because of the coronation. I showed her the orb I can create. I had to tell her. She's my sister!

Prince Rainier: ...and then you promised to make her child a spellcaster? You don't even know how to control your own powers, let alone the ones our own children will one day possess.

Queen Katherine: You think I wanted this?

Prince Rainier: Yes! Yes, I do! Ever since you found out that the amulet granted powers you were all in, just like your father! I should have known this was your plan all along!

Queen Katherine: That’s not fair! We possess twenty-three stones! That power is unthinkable! One stone is different than twenty-three, so I was protecting my children, my descendants! I didn't want to become a spellcaster. This isn't what I wanted, Rainier!

Prince Rainier: ...and I’m left to believe that?

Queen Katherine: What else do you want from me, Rainier? I can't fix the past.

Prince Rainier: King.

Queen Katherine: What?

Prince Rainier: I want to be crowned beside you as King. I'm not kneeling!

Queen Katherine: (gasps)

Queen Katherine: Rainier? You don’t think that’s…

Prince Rainier: That’s what? Asking for too much? These are MY children too! Now I have to accept that not just my children but my wife…

Queen Katherine: What? Are Spellcatsers?

Prince Rainier: No! Will share something without me.

Prince Rainier: (somber) The weight of always being left out is very heavy, Kate. I don't understand how you don't see that, after all these years together. So, no. I don't think asking to be crowned beside you is asking too much. I'm your husband. Your partner. I won't do this any other way.

Queen Katherine: I need time to consult my advisors.

Prince Rainier: I'll give you a day.

In London during the late spring of 1953, preparations for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation were reaching their denouement.

Couturier Norman Hartnell was completing a dress to outshine any other.

Tucked away at the back of Hartnell’s lavish Mayfair townhouse, a team of embroiderers were finishing stitching a floral garland on the ivory silk bodice and crinoline.

Pastel thread, jewels, sequins, beads and 10,000 seed pearls were sewn as Commonwealth emblems and British flora around an English Tudor rose scattered with diamond dewdrops.

Six young, aristocratic maids of honour, including 19-year-old Lady Anne Coke – best-selling author Anne Glenconner – were being drilled like guardsmen by The Duke of Norfolk, responsible for organising the coronation, as they rehearsed the walk to the Abbey altar, with his wife, the Duchess, standing in for The Queen.

“If the Bishops don’t learn to walk in step,” he remonstrated, “we’ll be here all night.”

The photographer Cecil Beaton, well-versed in photographing crowned heads and aristocrats in the Vogue studios, was prepping a vantage point in Westminster Abbey, high up by the organ pipes, as the best location from which to capture the ceremony.

It would be a long day; he’d fill his top hat with sandwiches to sustain him.

Nearby, at Garrard, the Crown Jeweller and his team of master craftsmen were hunched over workbenches altering the Imperial State Crown to fit the young Queen’s head.

Garrard had made the Crown in 1937 for King George VI – a replica of the crown designed and crafted for Queen Victoria, which contained virtually all the same stones symbolic of centuries of Royal history, fitted around a purple velvet cap and ermine band.

Clusters of diamond-set crosses and fleurs-de-lis linked by swags of diamonds, supported by sapphires, emeralds and pearls in the form of oak leaves and acorns, dazzled around the massive 317.40 carat Cullinan II diamond, the Second Star of Africa, cut from the largest diamond ever discovered.

Above it sat the Black Prince’s Ruby – in fact, a spinel, worn by Henry V at Agincourt – while the 104 carat oval Stuart sapphire gleamed at the rear of the band, with the cross atop the orb set with the sapphire from Edward the Confessor’s ring.

King George VI requested Garrard create an inner “hammock” style fitting, like a guard’s officer’s bearskin, to distribute the nearly three pounds of weight evenly on his head.

Reshaping the circlet for Queen Elizabeth II involved remounting the stones and motifs of which it is composed, as well as repositioning and lowering the arches, all of which required craftsmanship of the highest skill.

The aim was to improve the strength of the crown with lightness of weight, which isn’t easy with large stones, and those which were cut nearly 300 years ago.

They were working against the clock. The new Queen required time before the ceremony to become accustomed to the crown’s feel and weight.

“There are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise they are very important things,” said Her Majesty, recalling its heaviness on the 65th anniversary of the coronation.

“Fortunately, my father and I have roughly the same shaped head, so once you put it on, it stays.”

The media demanded constant updates on Garrard’s work, with the coronation making broadcasting history as the first service to be televised, adding to the sense of pressure.

In addition, two gold Armill bracelets of sincerity and wisdom, symbolic of the monarch’s bond with the people needed to be finished, which were replacing the 17th-century enamel bracelets dating from the coronation of King Charles II.

In previous ceremonies, the Armills had been carried, but these were made for the Queen to wear, decorated with two rows of engraving and Tudor rose clasps with red velvet linings.

Garrard was also inundated with cleaning requests.

“No one had worn their jewellery or tiaras during the war,” explains Lady Anne.

“People were queuing to have their tiaras, which were like great fenders of diamonds, stomachers and necklaces cleaned.”

On the day, 2 June 1953, it poured with rain.

Lady Anne remembers arriving at the Abbey:

“It was pretty dark and cold. Our dresses weren’t lined, there were clothing coupons after the war you see.

A tiny thread of blue cotton had been placed on the floor in the Abbey, so the Queen knew where to stand.

When the procession began, we walked past row upon row of tiaras, as well as people in their National dress.

The Queen walked a bit faster than the Duchess had in rehearsals, so we had to adjust our steps.”

The ceremony ended at 2 o’clock in the afternoon.

Hartnell left after watching his historic dress sweep down the aisle followed by the procession of royal pages, maids of honour, peers and peeresses sparkling with diamonds, looking, he remarked:

“Like a lovely hunk of fruitcake, the damson jam of velvet bordered with clotted cream of ermine and sprinkled with the sugar of diamonds.”

Beaton rushed to Buckingham Palace to photograph the Queen theatrically against a painted backdrop, holding the orb and sceptre and wearing the Imperial State Crown.

The Crown Jeweller Garrard remained until The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh had taken lunch in the Abbey annex, in case any last-minute adjustments to the diamond-encrusted Crown were needed.

“Cecil was waiting when we all returned from the Abbey,” Lady Anne continues.

“He had everything set up for the photographs, and that’s when I really noticed the Crown and jewels glittering under the bright lights and took note of it all.

The Queen looked so young, beautiful and vulnerable, so the contrast of seeing her crowned with all the regalia was extraordinary.

She was weighted down a bit, but I remember thinking it was terribly poignant.”

A tense moment followed.

“The Duke of Edinburgh was fussing around, and Cecil got irritated, put his camera down and said, ‘Oh Sir, would you prefer to take the photographs?’” Lady Anne laughs.

“The Queen looked a bit horrified, and The Duke wandered off. You see, The Duke would have liked the photographer Baron, but it was The Queen Mother who adored Cecil.”

Later, it was still rainy and dark outside.

When the gleaming, crowned figure of The Queen appeared on the Buckingham Palace balcony, she shone with a sense of tradition and permanence.

With the Imperial State Crown, she wore the Coronation necklace and earrings, made in 1858 by Garrard and worn by Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary, including 25 brilliants suspending the Lahore diamond drop.

Time will tell if the Armills will return to being carried at the Coronation of HRH The Prince of Wales, and if he has inherited the Windsor head shape, but should substantial adjustments be required, the crown will appear once more unchanged.

The historical continuity of the regalia, and the fact the crown is still in constant use, makes these jewels created in the Garrard workshop the most potent in the world.
