I like to think that the first time Dean told Cas he loved him it was simple. There was no big parade. No path of roses leading to a candle lit table. They were probably miles from a jewelry store or fancy restaurant.

No, it would happen one night when they're both watching a movie and have been in a comfortable silence for a majority of it. During a quiet scene, barely a whisper, Dean would say 'I love you, you know.' Cas' lips would slowly form a smile while he allowed a moment to pass before saying 'And I you', turning his head towards Dean with softened eyes.

Or maybe they're in the car, cruising away from their recent case. Sam's passed out in the backseat and the music is playing low or not at all. Dean focuses on the road, but keeps flicking his eyes to his passenger. Cas finally asks if he's okay, his eyebrows forwarded slightly in worry. Dean just scoffs and stares straight ahead for a few moments before looking one last time at his friend. 'We've known each other for a long time and I.. think I feel something for you man.' He would hurry through, almost stumbling over his words. 'I love you.' He would say the last bit more quietly and even more rushed. Cas' face would stay confused for just a second longer before relaxing and saying ‘I've loved you for some time as well.'

It would be simple. It would be perfect all on its own.
