Holmes being a hypocrite🥰meant with love for my favourite detective
Something I noticed immediately in my re-reading of A Study in Scarlet, was this line from Holmes, where he's discussing famous literary detectives such as Dupin and Lecoq. He says the following:
"Now, in my opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking in on his friends' thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of an hour's silence is really very showy and superficial."
Holmesies you can't catch me out !! You did the exact same thing in The Dancing Men!!
Holmes had been seated for some hours in silence, with his long, thin back curved over a chemical vessel in which he was brewing a particularly malodorous product. His head was sunk upon his breast, and he looked from my point of view like a strange, lank bird, with dull grey plumage and a black top-knot.
"So, Watson," said he suddenly, "you do not propose to invest in South African securities?"
I gave a start of astonishment. Accustomed as I was to Holmes's curious faculties, this sudden intrusion into my most intimate thoughts was utterly inexplicable.
'How on earth do you know that?' I asked.
two points: I haven't read any Dupin stories (I plan to) so I don't know how this compares to how he does it.
Secondly, you could argue it's slightly less superficial, as Holmes does go on to explain how he figured it all out.
But I just love it because it showcases Holmes's show-offy style and want to impress people (especially Watson). Him being a hypocrite here just makes him more human. He gets so caught up in wanting to be different and unique that he doesn't catch this one !! I adore that, honestly.
Edit: He does this also in The Resident Patient and The Field Bazaar

I wanted to write something about this novella inside novel, but the fact that chronologically there was a murder in England after this part means that probably this ended so bad ;w;

Study in Scarlet { Dahlia || Kristoph
[ Kristoph Gavin — Ivy University AU ]
"It's hardly inscrutable, Miss Dahlia." Kristoph Gavin gave pause for merely seconds before continuing in his usual quiet drawl. A pristine copy of Sherlock Holmes rested in his hands, title emblazoned in garish font and gold embossing. It eats at his patience like ash spilling from an open chimney. "The book is childish. The literature department should know better than to offload secondhand parlor tricks masquerading as mystery novels."
A scoff never leaves his lips—his reputation for composure was in due part to his particular knack of chuckling after a scathing review. He notched the book against his thigh, a display of shame if not anything else. The gold lettering winked back at them in the light, as if to taunt them in return. "Besides. What modicum of intrigue it has is merely a spectre of the original series. Mr. Herlock Sholmes should be quaking in his grave right about now."
"You could write better with your eyes closed." He isn't one for the faux pas of false compliments. Or...well, perhaps he was, under closely sealed circumstances. But there is hardly a reason to pay her false tribute when he at least believed her skill to be above that of the lionized Mr. Doyle.
He took to her side, pacing himself under the dappling shade of the school's willow grove. Allowing other students to overtake the sidewalk, Kristoph checked his watch for time and decided it was well within reason to stay. He considered it a means to curb his curiosity, given the woman in question had enough experience for them both.
"How would it go had you given it a shot?"

important reminder that holmes and watson transitioned from polite roommates to friends because watson read one of holmes's articles, called it and the writer a hack piece of shit, and holmes went "tell me more. btw i wrote that--no don't stop" and proceeded to call all watson's favorite detectives hack pieces of shit in return

I’m not following the Study in Scarlet letters from watson updates since I read it last year, but absolutely love this dialogue from Holmes in today’s update:
“Do you remember what Darwin says about music? He claims that the power of producing and appreciating it existed among the human race long before the power of speech was arrived at. Perhaps that is why we are so subtly influenced by it. There are vague memories in our souls of those misty centuries when the world was in its childhood.”

I love rereading a study in scarlet for the “they don’t know they’re going to fundamentally change each others lives” of their first meeting

I was thinking of using tumblr more for any draw I make instead of just the "finished"/"polished" ones. I will probably move the idea of a portfolio to somewhere else

During the next five chapters of A Study In Scarlet, I want everyone to remember that all of this is Jefferson Hope sitting in handcuffs, having just attempted to throw himself out of Sherlock Holmes's window, monologuing for, at the very least, over an hour (based on the audiobook).
