Old take, but I’m thinking about the differences between Pokémon SWSH and Pokémon SV and the way the world is presented, and I find it both hilarious and satisfying that in SWSH, the Pokémon League was a major sporting event with televised battles, giant stadiums packed with fans, uniforms, mascots (Ball Guy!), sponsorships, the whole thing, and then how could they top that in the next gen?
They couldn’t, so they went in completely the opposite direction: the Pokémon League is just a side thing. All the gym leaders have day jobs (and the task you have to complete before battling them often involves helping them with or pulling them away from those day jobs). The battle are public and a few fans show up but that’s kind of it.
I mean hell, the big post-game tournament that’s sponsored by the Pokémon League and personally attended/emcee’d by the Head Champion—in the largest city in the region, no less!—draws, like, maybe a couple dozen people to watch it. It’s a fun thing but it’s not, like, MAJOR LEAGUE SPORTS.
I just find the contrast to be very funny. Neither one is “better” in a vacuum; they serve the purpose they’re meant to serve in each game. But I still love that the decision was that they couldn’t make it bigger and flashier… so they didn’t try.

Actually the more I re-read Pokémon Adventures the more I'm convinced that this series is the one of the only ones that really gets rivalry.

It's not just about being at odds with each other (or hating each other), it's about spurring each other on to be better. Both Red and Blue have grown not just as Pokémon trainers, but as people too. Even in just three short volumes, they've matured so much and pushed each other (intentionally or not) into becoming better versions of themselves.

love the gym leaders that just refuse to have a regular gym building. to me, becoming a gym leader is the the real world equivalent of having a masters or doctoral on a specific field like anthropology or entomology. they are all insanely-skilled academicians who are really focused on their specific field/type.
agatha definitey had to drag blaine from spending all his time around the volcano in cinnabar and the pokemon there. lance definitely had to fight claire from spending all her time inside the dragon's den instead of her actual gym. wallace was at all times five seconds away from sending a search party for steven since he spends a lot of time training inside whatever cave he stumbled on.
elite four members are probably more insane. they only have to spend time at the pokemon league when a trainer get eight badges. these bitches can do whatever they want with their time. malva even had time to join the mafia.

Kanto, Route 26
I was extremely happy when @hugtherobots asked me to draw this piece, it’s always a pleasure to draw Kris, my very favourite protagonist, and of course Leaf too!
Leave a heart for these tough Pokémon girls!

Do you ever wonder about the social relations between regions in Pokémon?
Like, obviously there’s the big ones that the mainline Pokémon games are set in, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar and now Paldea, but those aren’t the only regions that exist in the Pokémon world.
Beyond that, of the ones that have people living in them, there’s Orre, the setting of the Pokémon Colosseum games, Fiore, Almia and Oblivia, the settings of the Pokémon Ranger games, Ferrum, the setting for Pokkén Tournament, and Pasio, the setting of Pokémon Masters EX. There are other settings in spin-off games, but they’re either exclusively populated by Pokémon or a city in an unspecified region. Specifically I was thinking of Fiore, Almia and Oblivia, the settings of the Pokémon Ranger games, when making this post. They’re all places where Pokeballs aren’t commonly used and there is no Pokémon League in their nations. How does that affect how they interact with the rest of the world? Given how Kukui talks about setting up the Pokémon League in Sun/Moon, it seems like having a Pokémon League is seen as a sign of joining the civilized world and entering the modern age, even if that’s a fairly reductive viewpoint, it seems like that’s how Alola is viewed, as an oddball traditionalist culture for not embracing the League system.
So, how are the Ranger regions viewed in universe, then? As strange outliers? As weirdo hippy cultures? Podunk nowheresvilles not worth having a League in? How do they think of the regular Pokémon regions in Fiore/Almia/Oblivia? As bullies on the national stage due to the outsized influence of the Pokémon League? Barbaric weirdo cultures?
I wanna know!

New mini comic! It's going to be only lineart because I already planned too many pages oof,, Pages: 2/10ish
This is AU-compliant, reminding that's 5 years after Sca/Vio! Crispin and Drayton are 20+ (20 and 24 respectively), Jenna (usual OC I brought here) is 25, Grimsley is 33 and Shauntal is 30. Drayton is the current Champion of Unova here, while Crispin is a recent addition to Elite Four (a couple years after Jenna). It's been a hard work attempting to draw the league but it was a fun challenge,,

Interactions Between Pokemon League Members from different regions are always nice to see
*Brock and Misty are implied, but I'm not including ALL of their interactions

My memory is failing me - is it ever established how often the Pokémon League Tournament occurs? It seems implied that it's annual but that can't possibly be correct if Red is only the ninth champion, and Oak also participated in his youth. These are the things that keep me up at night.
If someone actually has an answer, I'd be glad to hear it.
