a/n: thank u for the cute request anonnie,, i can’t turn down writing for my boy T-T

you truly felt like the main character of an anime when the moment you step off your local bus, colossal rain starts pouring down from above. in all honesty, you wished you were the next natsuki subaru or kazuma satou; anything would be better than going back to work tomorrow morning even after spending the night working overtime.

choosing to embrace your dramatic moment, you refuse the option of pulling your hoodie up, allowing droplets to cascade down your hair nonchalantly throughout the entire walk to your place.

usually only one thing in the world would be able to make you feel a bit better after an exhausting shift like today: your boyfriend. but this time, you begin to doubt if even he can turn your lengthy frown upside down.

however, before you can even fully push open the door to your apartment, a cat-like boy has already pulled you in for a big, warm hug. you inhale, chin resting on his shoulder, breathing in the smell of comfort and homeliness.

the embrace disappears much quicker than it usually does, and you have a hunch it may have to do with the fact your whole body is dripping with fallen water. “i missed you, jagi.” jungwon’s grin reaches from ear to ear, but it immediately shrinks when he notices your not-very-enthusiastic expression.

you reach up to give him a quick peck before turning over to the coat rack, pulling off your wet hoodie and shoes. “missed you too, wonnie,” you mumble tiredly.

the boy in question pouts worriedly, stuffing his hand in his hoodie pocket. he knew you’d be more tired than usual after working for more hours than usual, but you still always gave him a big greeting smile when you got home.

only a moment later, you recognise the sound of jungwon shuffling around behind you, his feet padding cutely against the wooden floor. curiously, you swivel around to face the inside of your apartment, only to see your boyfriend holding three oranges in his hands. “wh—“ you snort, “why do you have my oranges?”

he only beams brightly like a child, “watch me y/n, heeseung hyung taught me this!”

the next thing you know, you have a full of energy yang jungwon juggling your poor fruits in the middle of your apartment at 11pm. though it was ridiculous, you can’t deny he’s surprisingly good at the act, smoothly throwing and catching each orange with great precision. you can’t help but smile slightly at the boy who’s now humming circus music to add to the performance, momentarily forgetting about the mess that was your job.

“wow,” you say once he stops juggling, posing proudly with the oranges in his hands, “that was.. amazing, babe.” you tried your best to sound as upbeat as possible, but jungwon must see right through you in the way he frowns once more, dropping the fruits back into the fridge.

“if me juggling oranges doesn’t cheer you up, it must be pretty bad,” he comments, tugging your sleeve and pulling you over to the couch with him. “what’s going on?” he questions once you’ve both sat down comfortably.

you curl up closer to his side, head resting on his shoulder as you huff out a sigh. “i wanna quit that stupid fucking job,” you mutter through a yawn.

instantly, jungwon recalls all the past incidences you’ve mentioned about the horrid cafe; how your boss constantly overworked you, nobody did anything to ensure that customers who made the staff feel uncomfortable were blacklisted/banned, and most of your coworkers were lazy idiots who didn’t even do their job properly.

“then do it,” he suggests, looking down at you with big, boba eyes.

you scoff in response, eyelids closing further with every passing moment. “i wish, you know i need those hours, won.”

jungwon pouts at that, turning slightly to embrace you in another warm hug. “y’know what? i’ll find you another job myself, then. i’m sick of that place keeping you there overtime like a prisoner,” he grunts, eyebrows etching together furiously.

“and i’m still not over that time some idiot was trying to touch you and they didn’t even kick him out! if only i was there, i would’ve seriously fought him. or well, i haven’t worked out before, but i know taekwondo,” jungwon rambles in determination.

when you don’t respond or make an effort to move, your boyfriend tilts his head slightly, examining the back of your head resting lifelessly on his shoulder. “y/n?”

he lunges his body forward a bit, eyes finally meeting your exhausted, sleeping face with drool falling out of your parted lips. for a moment, he just admires how adorable and stunning you look (except maybe the drool) despite being absolutely knocked out.

jungwon barely holds in his giggle, muttering out a ‘cute’ before reaching for his phone to snap a picture. he ever so carefully shifts your weight to the other side so he can rise to his feet, lifting you into his arms like a toddler. soothingly, he rubs your back the whole journey to the bedroom, humming a lullaby and planting small kisses on your shoulder and neck.

jungwon was pretty proud of himself in the way he managed to hold you up with one arm, using the other to pull open the blankets, gently dropping you into the sheets with care. next, he adjusted your body so it was lying down properly (he didn’t want you waking up with sores everywhere), before quietly pacing around the bed to hop on the other side.

he smiles in adoration at the sight of you off in dreamland next to him, reaching over to turn off the lamp that was providing the only source of light in the room. even though he was technically completely alone, jungwon still felt a bit shy saying his last few words for the night. “g’night, love you y/n.”

The Eminence in Shadow is Premium Garbage

The Eminence in Shadow is the best anime of the Fall 2022 season. I enjoyed it more than Bocchi the Rock!, Mob Psycho 100 III, Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family Part 2, and all the rest, and it's not close. There's nothing else I looked forward to every week more.

We have to start with the protagonist. Cid "The Eminence in Shadow" Kagenou looks every power fantasy protagonist and attempted parody of the same dead in the eye and says, with the swagger of one who won before the battle began, "I am not here because I want your throne. It is already mine, and you sat upon it by my grace. Your time is past now, for I have come to reclaim what never belonged to you." Kirito hasn't finished grabbing a weapon before he is reduced to one inch cubes. Ainz Ooal Gown freezes in place, eyes empty, with no answer. Anos Voldigoad gives a knowing smile and steps aside. Rudeus Greyrat stands with tears in his eyes, grateful to be freed of his burden. Rimuru Tempest bows with grace. Maple doesn't know how she got here, but she's very happy for him. Kazuma and Subaru are nowhere to be found. A thousand other guys with messy hair and dark cloaks are silenced, with no time even to cry out.

The basic concept of Eminence is thus: Our protagonist has always wanted to be the ultimate badass. Realizing this is not possible in our mundane reality, he truck-kuns himself and is reborn in a fantasy world, intelligence and ambition intact. He does the usual isekai thing where he becomes stronger than anyone else with magic no one else uses mostly off screen - we're not here to see him struggle to earn his power. We do see him recruit Alpha, his first disciple in Shadow Garden, the underground antihero agency he made up to fight the Cult of Diablos, which he also made up. He decides for this scene that she will be descended from the hero to explain why those baddies wanted her blood.

Wait, "he decides?" That's right, Cid/Shadow is making it up as he goes along. He is playing a character, and the only way he knows how to do that is to actually become that character. While not being the magical Punisher, he plays a background character. He's not so good at that role - he keeps stumbling into relevancy. Eminence is improv, and Cid is very good at making things up and getting everyone to play along.

When Cid goes to the obligatory high school for aspiring magic knights (where he plans to be a C student), it turns out the princess in his class is the next target of the Cult of Diablos! Not one to leave a prompt like that unfulfilled, he yes-ands that encounter into one of the greatest statements of badassery you will ever hear. When Alpha and the rest of Shadow Garden show back up, he's grateful that they still enjoy their little game and are so accommodating of his quirks. He can't say that out loud, of course - that would break character. He just makes whatever cryptic statement feels right to him at the moment.

The world really does seem to revolve around Cid, and like the thousand shadows of his glory, he has no idea. As Shadow, the leader of a secret agency/cult of personality, he obviously has a harem of badass bombshell beauties in tight magic spandex, and just as obviously he's completely oblivious to their worship. As Cid, aspiring nobody, he has a separate, ever growing harem of less badass bombshell beauties. He is fully aware of their attention, but having an increasing number of ladies lusting after him doesn't fit the background character vibe, so he does his utmost to avoid their ever-compounding thirst. You heard me right - Cid/Shadow has two separate harems, so he gets to parody two different types of oblivious harem protagonist. There's even a power fantasy within that power fantasy, as the Shadow Garden harem regularly shows off how much better they are than Cid's collection of extremely eligible bachelorettes.

The 11/10 strength of Eminence is undoubtedly in its dialogue. In multiple places Cid/Shadow delivers lines with more impact as comedy than some of the most powerful statements in serious dramas deliver even once. I honestly struggle to find a comparison here. Monogatari is another shining example of dialogue, but even it never quite reaches that height.

Eminence does not have a deep emotional thread binding it together. It has no subtle themes woven into an intricate plot. The point of this exercise is unadulterated fun, and Eminence has that in spades. As for the rest of the factors that go into making a good anime great: The music is good all the time. The simple animation is consistent, and the expensive scenes really flex that budget. There's a bit of background CGI, but seriously who cares.

Conclusion

Score: The Eminence in Shadow is 9/10. Hammy, scenery gobbling dialogue can be found anywhere. Eminence manages to implement some of the best bad dialogue ever and it makes no apology, while also being gripping in its own way.

Recommendation: The power level requirement here is quite high. Eminence is only of interest to those already familiar with (and maybe a bit tired of) power fantasy/isekai anime. Additionally, it indulges in occasional fanservice you wouldn't want someone to see over your shoulder. However, if you do fall in the target audience you really should feel obligated to watch it.

Comparisons

I already said it's better than every isekai ever made. As a parody of power fantasies in general, it is perhaps best compared to The Misfit of Demon King Academy. That protagonist, Anos Voldigoad, is reborn with all the knowledge and powers of a nigh-omnipotent Demon King. He can literally reduce someone to a puddle of blood with the beat of his heart, and resurrect them with a snap of his fingers. Unlike Eminence, Demon King Academy has no winks at the audience - its position as parody is derived entirely from being presented as a straight implementation of the premise turned up to 20. As such, I think Eminence allows itself more room to play in that space. If you end up liking Eminence, Demon King Academy is a good pick for a follow-up watch.

How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend is the universal solvent of anime comparisons. It has many secret weapons, but the hook is in the title. Megumi stubbornly avoids classification under any well-established romcom stereotype. She's a nobody, a background character, a storytelling blank slate. In short, she is naturally what Cid tries his hardest to be. So, let's compare what these two anime think a background character actually is. Megumi defies tropes. Whenever someone tries to paint preconceived characterization onto her, it slides right off. You have to actually get to know her to understand her. Cid's view of a background character is instead someone you don't get a chance to get to know in the first place. He wants to be the guy who gets rejected to show that the love interest is picky. He wants to be the first guy to die in an action sequence to show the stakes are real. He wants to be disposable. So, to Saekano, a background character is someone you just haven't gotten to know. To Eminence, it's someone you never will. A subtle difference, but since Saekano is taking a look instead of taking the piss, it's the more interesting way to look at it.

Final Words

I will indulge myself in stealing borrowing from Susan Sontag's Notes On Camp. "Not only is Camp not necessarily bad art, but some art which can be approached as Camp... merits the most serious admiration and study." Eminence is not necessarily Camp, but it swims in those waters. I recommend you watch Eminence for the sheer audacity that it was made in the first place, but if you have a particularly open-minded professor and are desperate for a topic for a term paper, well... you might as well have fun with it, right?

You know I just found out you wrote that really good isekai quartet fanfic about Shield Hero. Nice job! Also, what are your thoughts on Re Zero, both in general and on its role in isekai quartet? Personally, I’m quite fond of the original series and I like how the characters get a break from all the suffering in Isekai Quartet, though I feel like it would be interesting if Subaru showed some more signs of being mentally unhinged, which he very much is thanks to return by death. Also, I’m surprised he hasn’t interacted with Tanya yet due to both of them having similar situations. Both of them were isekai-ed against their will and are at the mercy of entities that are infinitely more powerful than them, Satella in Subaru’s case and Being X in Tanya’s case.

Re Zero is a series I tried to watch but quickly found wasn't good for my mental health. I'm not saying it's a bad show - just that there's dark and then there's "all light has left the world" dark. Re Zero is, for me, that latter one. So I don't follow the series anymore; I look up details as they seem relevant to IQ.

And IN IQ...I think the purpose is to let Subaru have a break from constant death. He's still affected by the curse, yes, but there seem to be fairly few plot lines that hinge on Subaru saying or doing Exactly The Right Thing (which we as viewers know tends to happen after he's gotten it Dead Wrong a lot first). But really, that seems to mostly be the purpose of IQ in general. The majority of its heroes are people who have really hard lives in their isekai world, such that going back to high school for a while is a pleasant regression to an easier time.

For Ainz, of course, it's a chance to remember what it's like to be around normal people, and to not have to worry about looking godly for his crazed subordinates all the time. And for Kazuma...maybe a tiny bit of wake up call, that he could've had it so much worse.

I sat down and said the hell with it I have gone from game to game and I try to finish the whole game then moving on but unless it makes me like do some story before another I decided I'm gonna start going out on a limb and doing the characters I love or are pulled to first. Isekai Heroes: Chapter 12

what I wrote today for Isekai Heroes

“I do have self control.” Ainz said. “Though, I do hope that the Queen is more sensible than her husband. I would like to remove his Vassal Weapon.”

“Can’t do that.” Tanya said, snapping out of her daydream. “The Vassal Kick Vote needs to be unanimous or abstaining.”

Kazuma resisted the urge to faceplant and scream into his food.

Ainz raised a finger. “Say Subaru, why do you put up with Aultcray?”

“Demiurge.” Subaru said.

Ainz lowered his finger.

Kazuma sank in his seat, slapping away Tanya’s posture fixing hand.

“Anyways, while we were separated, Being X temporarily gave me a book on this world’s legends.” Tanya said. “Specifically about four Guardian Beasts who are regrown/respawned everytime the Waves happen. What these Beasts do is kill roughly 2 thirds of the World’s population to form a barrier that will stop the waves entirely. The first one is called the Spirit Tortoise and if anyone encounters a turtle-shelled monster, that isn’t a turtle type, then that means it has awakened.”

The nobles fortunate enough to overhear the Heroes table blinked in shock. Kazuma sank until only his eyes were above the table. Ainz had retrieved a notebook and writing tools to transcribe Tanya’s thoughts. Genesis gave baby doll eyes towards Kazuma’s portion and Subaru was rubbing the back of her head.

“Of course, these Spirit Tortoise Familiars are deadly and thus require fighters of level 50 to adequately fend off. That is for the Weakest Bat-Type Familiars, this weakness is compensated by the fact that the Bat-types can shoot an eye-laser that implants a Familiar Egg into you.” Tanya said, projecting her voice. “If the eggs do not hatch within a few days, then you get turned into one of the stronger variants, an Amalgam Parasite Type Familiar.”

Even King Aultcray was frowning at the news. “This is a Victory Party, please do not bring down the mood with such dire news. I expected that from the Wa-Sword or Shield Heroes. Not you, Lady Tanya.”

Tanya bent her head. “As you wish.”

“At least she got the important identification and danger out before getting censored.” Her fellow veterans thought.

“Damn Loli privilege.” Kazuma hid his glare by looking at the table. “If any of us tried that, we would be tossed into a completely unnecessary duel to defend the King’s honor. Or some bullshit like that.”

Genesis trilled as a Waiter deposited more food for the table.

Anime Update V2 43

Wolf’s Rain - None for this week. Waiting for it to be March before I start on the final stretch of the series.

Hunter x Hunter - Watched Gon and Killua continue their special training with Biscuit, who is still a total delight to have around. But this episode also revealed the identity of the dangerous bomber on Greed Island who got built up before, and it’s the exact shady guy voiced by Todd Haberkorn I expected it’d be. Damn if he’s not scary good at what he does, though - he can make targets out of people and disarm them with just a word, has another guy working with him and even got Puhat blown up, dead sooner than I thought he’d be!

Fruits Basket - While Tohru talked with Master Kazuma about what happened on summer break and the implications of what effect the Zodiac Curse will have on the rest of the Sohmas lives, most of the episode was spend with Kagura taking Kyo out on a very special date, one that served as a springboard for a ton more insight into Kagura, what she and Kyo’s relationship used to be like, and why she decided she needed to fall in love with him and force herself on him all the time, and this led to astonishing growth and redemption for her character. I felt for the girl so strongly, seeing how she knew all the ways in which she’d been terrible but really wants to not only do better, but to see to it that Kyo is happy even if it’s not through a romantic engagement with her. While I love and still miss this character’s portrayal in the original anime, I’m glad that I’m now able to love this take on her as well. Kagura Sohma, all is forgiven now.

Date A Live S4 - After the Fairy Tale episode, the one that finishes off this conflict underwhelmed me with the exception of the action scenes of Ike Westcott VS Elliot, Ellen VS the Fraxinus Crew, and Origami VS the British chick whose deal I’m still kind of hazy on. Not helping is that Mukuro is by far the least interesting Spirit this show’s given us, so I’m left wondering what the purpose of her even is.

Fate Zero - Got Saber VS Rider first as a chariot VS motorcycle race, and then as a brief skirmish before it became clear that despite how it had appeared, Rider was not the one who abducted Irisveil - it was actually Berserker and Kariya, working under request from Kirei. There was also a brief moment where Zouken showed up to meet with Kirei, which sets up things to come for Heaven’s Feel. Then Kariya discovers Tokiomi’s dead corpse in the church, and wouldn’t you know it, Tokiomi’s wife comes in and believes Kariya murdered him! It is in this moment where Kariya fully condemns himself, losing his grip on sanity and strangling the woman he loves to death in a moment of anguished passion. Exactly as Kirei and Rider planned.

Re:ZERO - This one marked the real big dramatic turning point of this series - "the Sound of Chains”. In addition to Subaru once again having to repeat his days at Roswaal’s Manor (talking to Emilia and Puck and re-establishing his “Meelie” pet name, chatting with Beatrice in her magic library, getting roasted by Rem and Ram while also being taught to read and write, all that), there’s a scene where Subaru recounts the famous “Weeping Red Oni” fable to Ram, with some underlining meaning and foreshadowing that starts to become clear at the end, as Subaru finally faces his assassin...and it’s Rem.

Symphogear G - As one could predict, Hibiki losing her arm to the Nephilim triggered her berserk mode, decimating the Nephilim but also putting everyone at risk and sending Dr. Ver into full pathetic Dirty Coward mode. It’s revealed that during the events of the last series, Hibiki absorbed some of Gungnir inside of her, and each use of it at full power drives her closer to death, so Tsubasa kicks her off the team in a pretty groan-worthy moment of creating a needless misunderstanding between the girls. Following some moments of growing clarity for Nastassja and humorous banter between Kirika and Shirabe (these two are globally wanted terrorists, folks!), Hibiki rejoins her friends at school only for them to run straight into Dr. Ver, who is again using Solomon’s Cane to control Noise. Immediately, Hibiki opts to break her agreement with Tsubasa and go into battle!

MAR - This show is normally just the most basic, average junk food level of “it’s okay/good enough”, but there are moments where it really kicks things into high gear and delivers a bit more, and these two episodes exemplified that. We got to follow Dorothy to her home, Cauldea the land of magic, and got more lore, more backstory, more details coming with revelations a long time coming. And then the Chess Pieces launch a unjustified assault on the place, endangering children and killing their parents. During this attack, Phantom is even there in person just to go toe-to-toe with Ginta, with Derek Stephen Prince continuing to sexually assault my ears the whole while! To top it all off, we learn that Babbo is the human spirit of the previous Cauldean elder sealed within Phantom’s ARM. What the fuck!?

Gintama - The episode that finally re-introduced us to Taizo the former government employee, who’s dealing with a mid-life crisis of sorts trying to find new work and, in a running gag that’s odd even for this series, is constantly being called a DORK, which is an acronym where the letters stand for different words each time it’s used! And then at the climax when he’s working as a taxi cab driver, he has to drive Prince Hata, the guy who got him terminated from his old job in the first place, along with Gintoki in the car as well, but he ends up once again pummels the spoiled alien brat away in favor of heeding his heart to help others in neeed. DORK or not, he’s cool with that.

Should our heroes break the rules?

You'd think I would have ended this series with the previous entry. Think of this as the true conclusion to the series. I like to do this whenever i write series like this and this might be the best way to do it. In the other posts in this series, I've talked about ideas that could be considered important guidelines for writing and analyzing characters and series. But, is there ever a reason to reject these ideas?

Let me talk about another passion of mine: music theory. Beginners to western harmony learn three basic no-nos to their harmonizations: no parallel octaves, no parallel fifths, and no doubling of the seventh scale tone. The reasoning behind this is to achieve a sound similar to Johann Sebastian Bach, arguably the greatest composer of Western art music.

There are two problems with this set of rules. One, not all composers write in a style similar to that of Bach. In fact, most composers nowadays don't write music like him. Two, Bach has examples where he famously breaks his own rules. They're rare, but Bach has moments where parallel fifths and octaves can be found in his music.

It's often said that rules are made to be broken. I don't know that that's a great way to live, but it gets at something important about the philosophy of disobedience. As much as rules exist for a reason, we as humans have a fascination with exploring ways to circumvent the rules as close as possible before we get in trouble. Part of the fun of the creative process is exactly that we, as creators, get to play with established elements.

It's worth mentioning that Bach and his contemporaries didn't come out of nowhere. Many of them were doing something that would be considered breaking the rules of composition only about a century before their time. And once they died and their styles of music became standard, others started writing music that broke those rules. It got to the point that concepts such as the nature of music itself are up for debate.

In regards to writing, one thing I've said many times in this series is that context is what's important. What is the series about? What story are you trying to tell? Depending on your answer, play with the conventions of what is to be expected of you.

Sometimes, it's worth playing with the rules because you want to show the problems with them. Sometimes you'll keep the story similar to what is expected with one or two changes that fundamentally affect the nature of the series. Sometimes, you want to provide a scenario where what's expected is less than helpful for the characters in the series.

In a previous entry in the series, I talked about how Re: Zero and Konosuba do this with the isekai genre. Konosuba presents a reality where Kazuma isn't enjoying his new world experience because of the people around him. Re: Zero presents a reality where Subaru isn't enjoying his new world experience at least in part because of his special ability.

Of course, it's worth keeping two things in mind when talking about doing things differently. One, any good story has to do something to differentiate itself from the many different stories like it. Two, there is no shame in following genre conventions fairly closely, without doing much to add to the genre. As long as you enjoy the story, there's no shame in doing what you want.

A great example of this is Hunter x Hunter. Despite what anyone tells you, there's not a whole lot that Hunter x Hunter does differently from other shonen actions series. However, it does everything that other series have done at the highest level possible. While other series have that one arc that's darker than others, very few of them match up to the Chimera Ant arc. Plenty of series have had tournament arcs, but there aren't many that match up to the Heaven's Arena.

What matters most in the creation process is doing what you want. It doesn't matter if someone's done something similar to what you want to do. As long as you aren't doing the exact same thing as them, have fun writing what you want.

As an analyst, it's important to recognize what a creator did and what it means. A lot of this means that you will and should figure out what was the intent of the creators. Often, you'll find things that weren't intended by the creators to be a thing. I think that's fine as long as you're not arguing that something that didn't happen in the series did. To be blunt, there's "death of an author" and rejecting reality.

Of course, I would be remiss to end this series without mentioning the most important part of the equation. Always have an explanation. If you write something, think of why you did. If you're an analyst, explain how you came to your conclusion. Your explanation doesn't always have to be deep or extensive. However, it's important to know the "why" behind any and all "what" situations you find yourself in.

I had the idea to explain what goes through my head when it comes to how a series makes certain decisions. It started out as just wanting to explain why I'm fine with characters forgiving and not killing. I ended up with the series we got. I’m glad that I’ve been able to finish this series. This has been fun and I can't wait to talk about other specific series soon.

Kazuma: “Guys, there’s a new guy at the rival classroom.”

Tanya: “If it’s Mary Siux I will kill that woman!”

Kazuma: “No, it’s a blonde guy with a spear.”

Naofumi Raphtalia, Filo and Melty stand up with nervousness.

Naofumi: “This is bad. If Motoyasu is here, Bitch can be close!”

Rapthalia: *Takes out her sword.*

The Shield crew walk slowly towards the classroom of the rivals and see Motoyasu waving at them.

Motoyasu: “Naofumi! Oh hi Filo!”

Filo: *Shows her claws to threat him.*

Subaru: “Is that guy really that bad?”

Naofumi: “He isn’t bad, he is an idiot!”

Ram: “We already have Subaru.”

Subaru: “Hey!”

Naofumi: “Motoyasu, is Princess Bitch here?”

Motoyasu: “No, the professor told me she wasn’t allowed here because she is ‘too much evil for us to handle’.”

Weiss: “Am I hearing this right?! There’s someone more evil than my superior?!”

Tanya: “What did you say?”

Weiss: “Nothing!”

Naofumi: “That is a relief. We would all be fighting against each other if that psychopath appeared here.”

Kazuma: “With a name like Bitch I can imagine. Is she really that evil?”

Naofumi: “Just mix Tanya’s ruthlessness, Shalltear’s bloodlust, Beatriz’s temper tantrums, Aqua’s narcissism and add whatever grimdark thing that is following Subaru.”

Subaru: *Has horrible flashbacks.* “THAT IS HORRIBLE!!!!”

Naofumi: “Exactly.”

Meanwhile at other part of the setting, Being X has summoned an unwanted visitor and a mentally unstable soldier.

Bitch: “What am I doing here?! What is this ugly place?!”

Mary: “Oh my god! Where am I?!”

Over Space-Time (2??? R)

“WHAT THE HECK IS THAT THING????!!!!” Subaru shouted, Over-1 by his side as they face Another 0V3R-1 down.

0V3R-1 was glitching in and out of reality, wires exposed, and rust formed around it’s empty shell of a face. It took a step forward and the entire piece of ground it was standing on began to glitch in and out of existence. Another step, another glitch.

“Can you handle it, Wave Life-form Rockman?” Over-1 spoke in a robotic tone, aiming his buster at the foe. Subaru nodded, placing his hand on the screen of the Armor Hand, slamming down as X and Zero were selected. Holograms of the two Rockmen flared out of the device before merging with Kizuna Wave.

Ryuusei’s left side became a darker blue, as his buster gained the form of his X armor buster, his ride side dying itself red, his Zero armor katana shooting itself into his Helmet shaped buster.

‘HISTORY’S BOND START UP! X! ZERO! KIZUNA WAVE MISSION! READY, GO!’

Subaru readied himself, as he prepared to end this fight before it could begin. He slammed on the Armor Hand again, activating his Big Bang early, Over-1 charging a shot. 0V3R-1 took one more step, before Subaru rushed forward.

‘KIZUNA FORCE BIG BANG, ACCESS!’

“I’m taking back the future! Infinte Posibuster!!!” Subaru shouted as Over-1 let out his shot, Subaru absorbing it with his X Buster, putting his katana in the end of it, charging it with the combined power of the four Rockmen, stabbing right through the glitching Another.

As the glitched being began to crack, it put its mangled hands on Subaru’s shoulders, giving the only words Subaru has known it to speak. “Kazuma... Is... Right... Do Not... Trust... WAXA Second... In Command... Thank You... For Saving... Me...” The Another gave a thumbs up, before exploding into pieces, Subaru being sent flying back.

Subaru woke up, out of Armor, back in the WAXA headquarters, Armor Flashing with the light of a new armor. As he realized he was lying on the floor, he got up, seeing the mysterious figure from before. “War Comet, right? How did you-”

“Doesn’t matter right now, and won’t matter for another few months. You have X, Zero, EXE, Trigger, ZX, ZXA, and Over-1 now. Three of them I took care of for you. You have one left to worry about now, and then you fight the big ones behind this. When you finish this fight, watch that USB. Remember, ALONE. You’ll see me again, but not in a way you’ll expect.” War Comet finished, turning from Subaru, and motioning for the boy to check on the still resting Misora next to him. As War Comet teleported out, Subaru could only wonder what he meant for them all.

“War Comet... Who are you?”

Watched Anime Genre

Watched List: Isekai 2016-Present

Anime: The Rising of the Shield Hero

Plot: Naofumi Iwatani is an otaku that is summoned through a book as 1 of 4 heroes to the world of Melromarc, to stop the Waves from destroying the world. Betrayal and ruined reputation causes Naofumi to be shunned by the people of Melromarc as well as the other heroes, forcing him to fight the Waves in his own way, all because he bares the shield. Pros: One of the more unique isekai animes out there. Instead of just one hero, there are four heroes, each from different versions of Japan. Instead of having a quirk or completely overpowered from the beginning, the main is instead knocked down to his lowest, resulting his not so heroic approach to situations. Gradually he begins to trust those closest to him and out of the bunch, he is the most grounded person and grasps reality far better than his fellow heroes. Cons: Pacing can feel a bit slow in the anime since there is a lot of small things building up before you get to the next big thing.(omg I want to knock some sense into the other heroes) And the anime tends to throw in a tad more details to make it feel as those Naofumi has a harem than it really is. (the one filler moment actually contradicts a detail the following canon scene) Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4.5/5] Comments: With the pacing, it’s perhaps better to be reading the manga. And since this is originally a Light Novel, I HIGHLY recommend watching AniNews’s youtube channel on Rising of the Shield Hero: Skipped Content as it helps fill in gaps not placed in the manga and/or anime.

Anime: KonoSuba: God's Blessing On This Wonderful World! Plot: “When high schooler Kazuma Satou dies, his given the choice to be reincarnated in a fantasy world much like a video game and be granted one item or ability. But can a dimwitted Goddess, explosion craze crimson demon, masochist crusader, and a lucky/unlucky adventurer to defeat the Devil King?” Pros: A very clever and humorous adventure with a group of misfits. Cons: There were a few points that felt a bit much or overly done. *cough*Aqua*cough* but luckily goes back into genuinely funny scenes. Too easily can turn into perverted moments for a non harlem type series. Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4/5] Personal Thoughts: Honestly can’t help comparing Megumin’s ability to another light novel character. Agnis, from Adventures of Duan Surk, a fire sorceress that can only use high level fire magic and passes out after each use. Except in Megumin’s case it’s Explosion magic. Besides that, and the quite troublemaking goddess- this series is unique enough as a comedy of misfits trying to live in a fantasy RPG world.

Anime: Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World Plot: “ With the biggest crisis of his life being summoned to another world and no sign of the one who summoned him, things become worse when he is attacked. However, when he is saved by a mysterious silver-haired girl with a fairy cat, Subaru cooperates with the girl to return the favor.” Pros: A series with mix of carefree moments as well as suspenseful. Cons: Subaru can have some very unlikable moments, other times you can feel your heart being torn to shreds to the point you wonder how would you fair in his shoes. Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4/5] Comments: Seriously Sabaru- Forget Emilia and go for waifu-Rem! TTATT

Anime: Saga Of Tanya The Evil Plot: “An unnamed atheist Japanese salaryman, in the moment of being murdered by a disgruntled subordinate who he had fired due to poor performance at work, is confronted by a entity that could stop time which he refers to as "Being X" or god, who condemns the man for not having 'faith'. He is sentenced to be reborn in a world that is similar to World War I Europe, mixed with early aspects of World War II and magic, in an empire torn apart by countless wars with all nearby countries.” Pros: Seeing the main getting bested and even frighten by “Being X” in an endless mind game while in a world in middle of war. Cons: ... uh what else is there to this series? Like how is the plot still moving? Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ ♡ [3/5] Comments: I’m not much into war types but this was alright I suppose. Not terrible, not a fave, and not memorable.

Anime: Overlord Plot: “When the shut-down time arrives, Momonga finds that the game hasn't vanished. Instead it appears as if Yggdrasil has been recreated as its own reality along with its various NPCs having been brought to life while Momonga has been trapped in the form of his game avatar, leaving him unable to use the normal player functions, such as General Message, or even to log out. With no other option, Momonga sets out to learn if anyone from the real world is also in this new world with him.” Pros: Curiously await what the future holds in Ainz’s adventure in this fantasy world and his NPCs seeking control of the world in his name. Cons: Albedo needs to dial back just a smidge. Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4.5/5] Comments: Don’t get attached to anyone outside the Great Tomb of Nazarick .

Anime: Isekai Quartet Plot: 12 minute comedic episodes of characters (Overlord, KonoSoba, Re:Zero, and Saga of Tanya the Evil) are sent to another world to survive ‘school life’. Pros: Ever wonder what it would be like to have different series come together and temporarily work together at school? Wanna see what character would get along and their reactions? Yep, this would be the show for ya. Cons: Episodes are too short! Once you finally get somewhere interesting, it gets cut to the next episode. Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4.5/5] Comments: Best way to watch this series is to binge tbh. It’s actually a lot of fun seeing the mains becoming friends and understanding their strengths and weaknesses.

Anime: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Plot: “Satoru Mikami, an average 37 year old office worker from Tokyo with no girlfriend, is stabbed to death by a passing robber. After making some requests during his death, he is reincarnated in another world as a slime with the ability known as predator (which can devour other creatures and obtain their abilities)” Pros: Unique concept of an overpowered little slime Cons: Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4/5] Comments: I really need to watch the rest of this series TTwTT

Anime: The Wise Man’s Grandson/Grandchild Plot: “A young salaryman dead in an accident was reborn in another world filled with magic and demons. As a baby, he was picked up by the patriot hero "Sage" Merlin Wolford and was given the name Shin. He was raised as a grandson and soaked up Merlin's teachings, earning him some irresistible powers. However, when Shin became 15, Merlin realized, "I forgot to teach him common practice!"” Pros: comical moments and fun action scenes. Interesting uses of knowledge from past life. Cons: Um... when/why did this become a gakuen life show? Why should we care about the very generic classmates that add little to nothing to the plot besides the crown prince? .... and you call that romance? Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4/5] Comments: Has a very strong start and I REALLY WANNA LIKE it but I’m starting to lose interest whenever Shin isn’t using his magic in a battle as everything tends to be ‘oh noes we can’t let the world know of Shin’s gifts’ to ‘Look what Shin did for us!’ in the next instant.... everything looks pretty at least.

Anime: How NOT To Summon a Demon Lord Plot: “Takuma Sakamoto is a hikikomori gamer who is mysteriously transported to the world of his favourite MMORPG, Cross Reverie, with the appearance of his own character in the game, the Demon Lord Diablo. The two young girls who summoned him, the pantherian Rem and the elf Shera, attempt to use a spell to make Takuma their servant, but due to his passive "Magic Reflection" ability, the spell rebounds, and both end up with magic collars stuck on their necks, thus becoming his slaves instead. With a serious case of social anxiety, Takuma decides to act like his character while interacting with others, and makes use of his high stats and vast knowledge of Cross Reverie's lore to survive in his new environment, traveling along with Rem and Shera to look for a way to remove their slave collars while helping them with their own, personal issues that led them to summon him in the first place.” Pros: The comedy and Diablo’s battles are satisfying to watch. Cons: The not so subtle ecchi moments, in particular one ritual scene that was... a bit much personally. Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ [4.5/5] Comments: If you don’t mind watching ecchi stuff, you’ll have a fun time with the story and overpowering battle moments.

Anime: Death March To The Parallel World Rhapsody Plot: “Ichiro Suzuki is a 29-year old gaming programmer who was tasked with fixing several bugs in two MMORPGs his company is preparing for publication. After taking a nap, he mysteriously wakes up in a parallel world that resembles some of the fantasy RPG worlds he had worked on, as a 15-year old named Satou Pendragon. However, before he could grasp his current situation, an army of lizardmen ambush him and launches an all-out attack on him. In desperation, he uses all three of his special 'Meteor Rain' attack options (a quick fix he added to the game for new players which kills all enemies in the vicinity) at once and wipes them all out.” Pros: A very casual journey of a character with too much exp points and money. Cons: Everything always works out in the end. Is a harlem REALLY needed here? Personal Rating: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♡ ♡ [3/5] Comments: It’s a nice laid back Isekai series. I just wish the Elf arch had more of challenge and thrill, and the very cliche harlem girl gimmicks doesn’t make the relaxing scenes all that pleasant. Guess I was really hoping more to the story? I mean it has potential just doesn’t go there quick enough.

Anime: In Another World With My Smartphone Plot: “ Fifteen-year-old Touya Mochizuki is accidentally killed by God. As an apology, God allows him to be resurrected, but since he cannot send him back to his old world, he instead reincarnates him into a fantasy world along with a single special request. Touya uses his request in order to bring his smartphone into the new world with him, which God modifies so that the phone will function in the new world. God also greatly amplifies Touya's physical, magical, and cognitive abilities to a certain degree as a further apology for the inconvenience of killing him. Taking full advantage of his second chance at life, Touya befriends many different people, mainly females and high-ranking people in the new world. He begins to travel from country to country, solving political disputes, minor quests, and nonchalantly enjoying himself with his newfound allies.” Pros: Visuals are pretty Cons: What was meant to be ‘basics’ in magic turns out to be the over power ability of knowing all affinities, thus you’re the strongest being in the world. There’s little to no consequences for his actions... everything always works out because of his op ability and the number of girls grow. Given how everything is hunky-dory and the girls are just being unreasonable- yeah- lost interest.
