Crossing Life Lines by Paul Brouns Some time ago I visited Superkilen, a public park in Copenhagen, Denmark. But once I got there, it started to rain and it seemed to go on forever. I almost decided to leave, but in the end proceeded shooting in these crazy conditions. While my wife held an umbrella above the camera, my son Floris (in a red raincoat) volunteered to walk the park... reluctantly of course! The challenge of taking this photo in a way illustrates the difficulties we need to face in our lives. contender for ‘most surreal moment of my life’ has got to be walking around copenhagen alone (norrebro iirc??) some time during that weird march 2020 week in between finding out that covid was cutting my semester abroad short and getting on my flight back to the states. so i see a sticker on an electrical box promoting alphabetical, the new album from phoenix. that album came out in 2004, that sticker had been there 16 years and i just happened to come across it. one of my favorite bands of all time. strange moment.

#it may have been near superkilen bc i remember i was running around the city trying to cross off all the touristy stuff i hadnt gotten to do #all alone !! gosh it was so...... singular #i biked to the little mermaid statue at sunset and drew her #couldnt see the sunset bc it was so cloudy #its always cloudy in winter there p much #i want to go back one day :( #m

It’s been nearly a year since we travelled to Copenhagen and I’m going to try to update this blog more often... So I thought I would start with our trip there... 

Copenhagen has the ability to be a forward thinking city and yet has amazing respect for the past, preserving the old buildings in the centre while developing new ones for the future. We were drawn to Copenhagen for this reason, we also liked the idea of Scandinavian living and wanted to see it in real life because it would be a dream to live in one of these countries even for a little while. It’s a beautiful city and we could see that the moment we got there.

Arriving in the late afternoon it was starting to get dark as we took the metro and then a bus to find our apartment. We stayed in an apartment in the district of Nørrebro overlooking a lovely church. Nørrebro has an inclusive feel and has plenty of restaurants and bars, it really gives you a sense of modern living outside of the tourist hotspots.

Leaving our apartment in the morning we headed out in the cold to the Superkilen park which was just down the road from where we were staying. It’s a park that is really graphic and manages to incorporate many ideas without them looking out of place. It works well for adults and children alike and this is a theme we started to see throughout the day as we discovered more urban spaces. From here we walked towards Nordhavnen, stopping as and when we wanted by anything that interested us. When we arrived at the dock area we climbed the many steps to get to the top of Park 'N' Play a building and urban space created by JaJa Architects and Rama Studio and is a great example of designing for the future, as it’s a multi functional public space. This multi-story car park located near new housing developments has a play ground on the top which is not only child friendly but designed in a way that adults can use it to work out too, we tested this by climbing and playing on the swings ourselves… In the spring and summer the outside of the building will be covered in new plant life as the building has holes designed for climbing plants to cling on. Buildings that think about the community and the future really stand out and for all the right reasons.  

From here we walked along the docks towards the centre, here we passed some more of the modern housing developments including Fyrtårnet (The Lighthouse) which marks the entrance to the new residential area on Amerika Plads. Covered in grey slate it’s not only striking but still works with the buildings surrounding it. We continued our walk investigating the area, passing more buildings like the Copenhagen Opera House that could be considered pieces of art in their own right. We finally got to the centre; the historic centre of Copenhagen remains untouched by high-rise buildings and this means that the skyline hasn’t changed much at all. The highest buildings in the centre of Copenhagen are the spires and towers from churches, castles and palaces. You can see these from the top of Rundetårn (the round tower) which has no steps and instead a spiral to climb and I have to say the views from here are stunning, a lovely reward after the climb.

Before getting back on the plane home we walked to see the north sea one last time. It was extremely windy and we listened to the crashing waves as we walked on to the pier towards Kastrup Sea Bath (White arkitekter) this is a fascinating structure as you stand on it, surrounded, you are sheltered from the harsh cold wind. You look through the windows and can see only the horizon. Horizons always make me feel about how the world is ongoing and how many possibilities there are, which is a great way to describe Copenhagen - full of possibilities. It was a great last experience before we went home and as we returned to the airport, with red raw cheeks from the cold all I could think was how there’s so much more to discover. I will be back, København!
