[cws: psychiatric abuse, torture, homophobia, ableism, sanism, racism, pictures of taxidermy. boy this show is a lot sometimes lmfao]
-
so something @thecottageinthedark noticed recently that i'm still fucked up about is that pericles' cage in the asylum isn't actually a bird cage.
it's a bell jar.
for those who don't know what a bell jar is, it's a type of taxidermy display for preserving delicate specimens, most often birds. it's easy for their feathers to get dusty or disintegrate over time if they're left out in the open; a bell jar not only keeps off dirt and keeps people from touching them, but it's made to create a vacuum inside to keep everything where it is.
another layer to this reference is that the book The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath, is a retelling of her own experiences with mental illness and the attempts made to treat it at the time. notably, one of the major themes of the book is psychiatric abuse.
pericles is also not only a gay man forcefully committed to an asylum in what is most likely intended to be the 70s, but a very obvious and already horribly handled fantasy metaphor for both physically disabled people and POC. (in particular the talking animals' role in the worldbuilding heavily mirrors Black americans irl, which holy shit there is so much to unpack there all by itself. there is So Much)
(fun little bonus on the side: he's kept in a cell with extremely bright blue/white light 24/7, at an angle where it'd be even more difficult to block it out than if it were overhead. this would make it impossible to get any decent fucking sleep, which is widely recognized as one of the worst forms of torture to exist. they did this to him for 20 years straight.)
so, to recap: gay man and analogue for disabled people/POC, who is also portrayed as an ~evil crazy malicious psychopath,~ is kept in not only a display case for scientific specimens, but one specifically made--in-universe and out--to recreate something that is done to his demographic as a metaphorical disabled person/POC.
and not only that, and not only do people talk about him--in front of him, like he's not even there--as a specimen while gawking at him in this position, but he is being displayed like the stuffed and mounted corpse of a disabled person/POC.
he is said to belong on that display for 'the rest of his miserable [disabled/POC] life.' no one disagrees with this. he's painted as smugly bullying the violent abusive guard. in general he's portrayed as Scary and Evil Now for having been in this situation. and when he escapes, it kicks off what end up being the most heavy-duty problems for the protagonists, which result in the Bad Ending for the nibiru timeline; if he had stayed there, continued to be objectified and tortured with homophobic/racist/ableist violence for the rest of his life, the timeline almost certainly wouldn't have been doomed.
and they used a real person's autobiography about their experiences with psychiatric abuse for this. and to position them in the role of someone it should have not only happened to, but been even more horrifically dehumanizing and cruel.
yeah. i..... yeah.
the creators of this show are genuinely really good at putting together layered references like this, some more obscure than others, which are rewarding to discover and add depth when you do, and it is a crying fucking shame that they like to use it for shit like this. god damn lmao

I feel bad for Starlo. (pt. 6)
I think the main thing we were supposed to see as Star's character flaw wasn't that he was acting proud/arrogant/reckless/badass (I mentioned that it's fine for him to act that way because he deserved it after everything good he did and obviously I still mean it 110%), but how that proud, charming guy was never the real him. He literally lost himself trying to feel worthy and please everyone in town. For years he's been acting the role (for a noble cause) but the price was him losing touch with the nerd he is.
Yet STILL, if only everyone had been a bit more gentle with him, I bet he'd have toned it down during the WE section, and even before that. But they all decided to let him know the truth at the worst possible time, right when he was supposed to make Clover his deputy. Right after they attacked the kid because they were jealous. It was supposed to be the PEAK of Starlo's day and they randomly threw the "we never liked any of this" bomb at him instead of trying to talk it out BEFORE things escalated. I'd be pissed too.
Oh yeah...
... his brother doesn't take him seriously apparently and doesn't realize that staying positive and strong 24/7 is tougher than it looks, especially with Starlo's insecurities (and yeah being a farmer is hard work, but so is being in Star's position; on the contrary, it's even TOUGHER) ...
Orion should try being an entertainer for a day and see what it's like, let alone doing it for years
...Solomon says how Star thought him and Crestina didn't support his life choices...
... and how he rarely talks to his family...
...and it suddenly came to me: in all these years, they didn't ever bother telling him that they did support him? They didn't bother trying to reach out to him more? Understand his passion (Ceroba doesn't get it either; once again, I don't blame Starlo for caring about Clover so much, that kid understood)? Have an honest talk?
No wonder Star stopped interacting with them for the most part. Maybe him feeling worthless came from his family? Who knows (or he was bullied as a kid for being a nerd). In any case, he clearly had to deal with these feelings by himself.
This man's been through some stuff.
P.S. I know he has flaws like everyone, but you've gotta ask yourself the important question: WHY? where did all this come from? But clearly nobody in his life ever asked themselves this. So it all kept building up till he almost killed his deputy for... status. He was SO desperate to feel valued and get his friends back (who made him feel less alone.. but ultimately just left when he needed someone the most, at least ONE person) that he was ready to go all the way to achieve what he'd been lacking his entire life: *feeling like he MATTERED.*
I wonder If he'll ever go 100% back to being his true self. Slim chances :'( this is him now. Half farmer half sheriff

i see a lot of posts about how to leave quick and easy comments if you are shy abt leaving comments which is great!! but if you want to leave a more substantial comment than a couple emojis (which are great don't get me wrong!!) here is my formula for leaving a substantial comment that generally helps me hit all the parts of the fic i want to comment on:
start with a couple sentences of my general feelings about the fic, usually pulling out plot points or character beats that got me in my feelings. "i love this fic so much, here are the feelings i felt about the characters/plot! these plot points really got me good! i felt this way bc this part nailed me in the chest!"
pulling out my favorite thing the author did and explaining why it was my favorite. often this is more over-aching -- for example, maybe i really loved the tension in the fic or i loved the author's attention to detail. just something very specific about the fic that i really enjoyed and wanted to call attention to as something the author did really well
pulling out a specific line i really enjoyed and talking about why i enjoyed it. maybe it made me laugh, maybe i had to go lie down on the floor after reading it, maybe it got me in my feelings. "but!!" you say, "i enjoyed so many lines, i couldn't possibly choose just one!!!" you can do all those lines if you have energy and are moved to do so! or you can (as i often do), scroll around until you find a line you have something to say about! often there are fics in which i loved many lines, but i only have so much time and energy in my life and i personally(!!) try to leave commentary that isn't just keysmashes, so i look for a line that i have something to say about clearly, even if it's just, "it made me laugh for this reason."
finish by thanking the author for writing and posting. this isn't for everyone! it's just something i like to do bc i think it takes a lot of courage to post your fic when you're never really guaranteed the response you want! obvs most writers are writing TO post, but for me i always like to say thanks for being brave enough to post so i can enjoy the author's hard work
that's my formula! of course there are always variations in each comment, but i try to hit all four of these points when i want to leave a substantial comment. this is again, strictly what i developed for myself and is by no means me telling you that this is how to leave a good comment!! all comments are great and as a writer, i'm glad for all of them, every single one. but i see a lot of posts on this site about how to leave "easy" comments, but not a lot about how to leave more substantial comments. so i thought i would share. hope this helps :D

Random late-night revalation: a superhero whose superpower is growing mushrooms, any kind, very fast and in huge quantities. Think about it. If you need to get into a building, grow a mass of mushrooms that instantly decay the wood of the door. Be a travelling herbal potion supplier, making your own super-fresh ingredients. Grow a cool giant mushroom umbrella cap on top of your head. Undercut the truffle market. The possibilities are endless.
