i just had another uncomfortable dream about being at a swimming hall. that makes at least three of them.
they're all a bit different obviously, but they all follow the same formula: i go to the swimming hall, then at the locker room i try to decide whether i should use swimwear to cover the upper part of my body or not. and every time i experience this conundrum i feel sad and frustrated at the injustice i and many others face.
i don't want to go swimming (in real life) anymore. not because i don't like swimming, i love it, but because of the misogyny that's ever so present in swimming areas. i've only recently become a topfreedom activist, so that's why this wasn't an issue to me before. now i dread the idea of having to face all that topfree inequality with the conscious and aware attitude i now have. i already feel so frustrated and depressed over this issue, i'd probably prefer it not being emphasised. i mean, being trans/nonbinary and having to use binary locker rooms is one thing, but everyone having to cover their chests simply because they're female-presenting is another.
cishet men have historically and repetitively sexualised, objectified and therefore also caused the demonisation of women's breasts, which is why they need to, according to current societal standards, be covered or censored in any situation or medium that is not explicitly shecksual/corno-graphic. this also results in women having to cover their chests in swimming halls and beaches (whilst men get to keep theirs nice and bare...), which is funny since we're all naked in the locker rooms and no one seems to have an issue with that. it's only when people exit the locker rooms and are wearing "appropriate swimwear" are women and men allowed to exist in the same space.
this society has normalised men being predatory so much, that if we were to propose gender neutral locker rooms to swimming halls, people would instantly object it, saying: "but then the men are going to assault the women!". are we really that weak as a society? that men cannot handle being around naked women, that they just have to assault them on the spot? no, it's not the gender neutral locker rooms that are the problem. it's misogyny and sexism. it always has been. how about we hold predatory cishet men accountable for their actions instead of punishing female-presenting people for being victims of misogyny? that could be a step in the right direction towards a better society. just fucking saying.
i dare to dream of a world where we can all exist in the same locker rooms, regardless of our gender, sex or body type and no one has a problem with it. i dare to dream of a world where female-presenting people can swim in swimming halls and beaches bare-chested, just like their male-presenting counterparts have been able to do for 100 years.
all of this is perfectly achievable in the real world, but only if we fight against misogynists and misogyny as a whole. everything counts, even the little things. if you don't think whatever feminist content you've made won't matter because of how "insignificant" it is, then you're wrong. post that shit my friend, and i just might reblog it, unless you're a terf, of course.

I just love being in the water. I could swim in the lake but I prefer a swimming pool. The cool water, arms and legs push me forward. I empty my mind from thoughts. It's just me and the water. In the swimming hall I use it's a bit of luxury because many times when I go there I have the whole pool to myself.
If I get rich one day I will build me a house with my own swimming pool. Water therapy I call it. To be surrounded by cool pool water. I think I could live in water. I can also like being in a bath tub or in a pool with warm water. After I have been swimming I find myself a warm pool. It's such a treat. And what if I looked anything like that woman in the picture? I would have felt more at ease walking around in a swim suit. Well, it is what it is.

Amazing conversation I had with my co-worker buddy about Foster's that I'm still laughing about (this started with us talking about the tired "Frankie is Madame Foster's imaginary friend" "theory" and snowballed):
Co-worker: I mean if you're watching Foster's and what you get out of it is that everyone is unfair to Bloo when he's being a jerk, then maybe alternate universes do exist because I want to know what version of the show some people watch.
Me: Wilt is short. Eduardo speaks French. Mac can shoot lasers out of his eyes.
Co-worker: Coco speaks perfect English. Duchess is a nice person and Terrence volunteers at hospitals by reading to sick children. Berry hates Bloo.
Me: Madame Foster is a secret drug lord.
Co-worker: ...what are you talking about that's probably canon.
...it's too bad the spinoff is going to be for preschoolers (if it even happens because Zaslav fucks with everything) because I really need that to be a B-plot to an episode now.

Ok I’m probably not the best person to say this, but I’ve been seeing a lot of (as of right now) accurate insults on how the CGI approach for the Live Action Little Mermaid movie, but please be mindful that you don’t take things too far, and *especially* don’t start going after Halle Bailey (Ariel’s actress) and to a lesser extent, Ariel the character.
Antiblackness is still an issue in a lot of fandom spaces, and it doesn’t just come out as using nasty slurs or stereotypes. It manifests as drawing Black characters lighter and/or with more white features, it comes out as removing Black partners from ships, and it starts out as plausibly deniable insults that get the door open to microaggressions and outright nasty comments.
I’m not saying that all discussion of the movie should be stalled, or even if it turns out to be an artistic failure, that it doesn’t merit discussion. I’m saying that you shouldn’t extend your vitriol to the characters and actors.
If you really feel the need to insult her, it might be worth a little introspection. Ask yourself, “Do I resent that they changed Ariel, or that they changed Ariel in this way?”. You’re not irredeemable if your personal answer isn’t kind. Just be more careful, try and observe how that sort of world view affects your behavior to others, and then course correct.
A lot of little kids would love to see another Black Princess. A lot of little kids would love to have a Black mermaid as a main character. Hell, a lot of adults would love those too. Black fantasy characters have long been excluded, transformed, killed, merely in the background, relegated to stereotypes, villainized and have hardly ever in the spotlight, especially in major productions.
Don’t make it harder for kids (and adults!) to see themselves on screen. Don’t ruin their wonder. So don’t make unkind comments. Keep it to yourself. Frankly, Halle looks beautiful, and I can’t wait to see the sparkles in her fans’ eyes as she swims across the screen.
