Writing Snippets--10/27/2022
Okay yeah it’s a little late today but apparently this week my sinuses decided to go eff you in particular so yay. XP
In other news--change of pace, we’re doing some more Ghost’s Fury stuff!
But it did make him wonder.
Finish up the sketch he planned on fielding by the fishers later (probably delegate to Carl, he’d know who actually did up the nets—hopefully not someone who left with Callaghan), put it aside and go flipping through his notes.  Let’s see let’s see…there.  That sketch Hiro had done, once upon a time, possibly explaining why the dragons had attacked to begin with.
I should hope that’s not to scale, firstly.
Consider this, tapping his pencil against the table.  If there were, in fact, large dragons that drove the other dragons to attack settlements…it bore asking the question of where the one for this particular flight was.  Couldn’t be out there lurking nearby, he thought, it’d be obvious that they were out there still feeding it, most certainly wouldn’t be bringing food here after robbing them for so long.  No, it had either died or been killed…but how?
Obvious answer was the dragon that the others now deferred to: Tadashi.  Made sense, Night Furies were dangerous in their own right, although now it made him wonder if there was just—a whole species of alpha dragons, or if once a dragon became an alpha it would then grow to immense size.
Had a brief imagine window of Tadashi squashing him like a bug before dismissing that.  Hiro had shown that he could draw Night Furies, and the creature he had drawn that day was not a Night Fury.
So.  The takeaway was that he didn’t have to worry about some massive, possibly untamable dragon in his future.  That was good, he could live with that.  Far better to focus on some of the issues in front of him, like fiddling with the saddle design some more.  Do that until Carl came by with fish fillets, traded him the net designs, telling him to tell the fishers to figure it out, shooed him out before he could make anything of it.  Oi vey.
Obake’s still working out the logistics of chieftain-ing so he’s not having a good day.  In other news, Tadashi the Night Fury can totally take on all comers don’t mess with his little brother.

It’s all coming back
Pairing: semi eita x reader
Word Count: 2.8k
Tags: war au, minor character death (mentioned), angst
Ramblings: i think ive peaked with this fic. i also cried multiple times writing this but like... thats nothing new sklajsdbk. thank you to lyra for beta-ing and yelling about this with me every step of the way <3
---
The summer breeze sweeps through the valley, warm air bringing little relief from the afternoon sun. You can feel the sweat dripping in familiar discomfort down your back as you pull at the weeds invading your struggling potato crop. It’s mind-numbing work, but it has to be done. Anyway, you’re almost-
Your name is yelled, loud and panicked. Tsutomu’s stumbling form is running towards you.
“There’s a man,” he pants. “There’s a man coming up the hill.”
“Is it Tadashi?”
“I don’t think it’s him. He-” Tsutomu throws a look over his shoulder, like he can see through the house and fences to remind himself what this man looks like. “He’s got a sword I think.”
“A soldier?” you breathe, the stone in your stomach dropping lower. Your shoulder aches. It’s still healing, a lingering reminder that soldiers are nothing but bad news. It’s been nearly a year since the war ended, but they like to ignore that fact.
Through the summer haze, you can see a blurry figure trudging up the road winding up to the house. Even at this distance, you can tell it’s definitely not Tadashi.
“Kei and Hikota are further out," you tell him, eyes still set on the figure. "Go find them and stay in the barn together until I come and get you, OK?”
“But-”
“Tsutomu. Go.”
The mystery figure is nearly at the house by the time you make it out the front door, shotgun in hand. Now you're closer you can see the ash-grey hair, the sword swinging at his hip. At this distance, you can also see the nervous smile on his face. Reluctantly, you lean the shotgun against the door jam.
He stops a few respectful paces away, and you let your eyes flit over him scornfully. “You’ve got guts, showing up here again.”
Semi winces. He knew not to expect a warm welcome, especially with how he left, but he hadn’t expected this. You don’t look the same as he remembers - more worn, more beaten down by the ebb and flow of life than he had hoped. There is a new assertiveness that you wear, still a few sizes too big for you to fill out properly but nonetheless folding strong and confident across your shoulders. It speaks to many years alone, being forced to grow up too quickly.
He supposes that’s partially his fault though.
“What do you want?” you ask, chin tilted up. Defiant as always. He’s glad that hasn’t changed.
“I’m… the war’s over. I came home.”
“Home?” You sound incredulous, a mocking edge to your voice.
“Yes,” Semi says, uncertainty beginning to cloud his words. “To you.”
You scoff. It seems the years have gifted you with a certain bitterness; he can not fault you for it, but it still grates at his rose-tinted memories. You were never a particularly joyful child - joy wasn’t a luxury people like you and he could afford - but there was a hope he remembered, a desperate spark that you’d imbue into the stories you’d tell the younger kids. The woman in front of him today deals only in blunt, unsavoury realities.
“Home to me,” you repeat, nodding slowly. Your tone is less than impressed. “Tell me-” you cock your head, contempt in every move, “since when do you leave your home without even a goodbye?”
You can see the confusion in the furrow of his brow. How could he not know?
“I’m sorry, I-” he shifts, looking less like a war-hardened soldier and more like the lanky 17-year-old you knew all those years ago. “I wasn't brave enough.”
“And yet you were brave enough to go fight in a war that's stretched on for years.” You bite your tongue, frustration welling up because you want to hug him forever but you also can’t let yourself slip up. He’s a soldier. He left. You have the younger kids to think about too, and you aren’t going to let him come in and destroy this family you have fought tooth and nail for.
“You seem like you’re doing OK now.”
“Yeah, now,” you bite back. “I’m doing OK now because I survived long enough to get out of the city walls. Barely. You can’t just waltz back in here like you never left.”
“I had to go, they needed me.”
“They needed you?! What about Tsutomu?”
He looks sheepish at that. Maybe you're finally getting through to him.
“He had you?” he tries.
Then again, how could he know? He may have seen horrors fighting for six long years, but Semi left before the city really began to fall apart. You have survived your own nightmares. Humanity is capable of more atrocities than just war.
“Of course he had me, I wasn't going to abandon him after his own brother did.” It's a low blow, but you can't find it in yourself to care. “But that doesn’t erase the fact I was one girl! I was struggling to feed my own siblings let alone yours! Do you think young girls can find work in the city? Do you think I could protect all of the kids?”
You’re shaking now, animated in your fury, and the words are pouring out faster and more uncontrolled than you had imagined. You have had six years to think of what you would say to Semi if he ever came home, but right now you can't remember a word of the carefully scathing speeches you had drafted in those long nights. This is far less elegant, nothing more than the messy sum of repressed emotions and long-forgotten promises.
“You left! When I needed you! You left me alone, just to-” you angrily smear your tears, jaw clenching, “-to go fight in some stupid war they already had thousands of men to fight.”
“You had the others, and I couldn’t just-”
The door behind you creaks.
“Go back to your siblings, Kei,” you say, not turning.
Semi’s eyes are pulled to the proud arch of a young boy’s head. For someone with dirt smeared across his cheek and a sun-bleached shirt, the kid holds himself with something akin to royal grace. Semi would be impressed if he didn’t recognise the faux bravado as the carefully cultivated shield it is. He used to wear the same brand of armour.
“You sure?” the boy asks, a well-worn aloofness in his tone that that shouldn’t belong to someone still so young. If life hasn’t been kind to you, it has been rougher for this kid.
“I’m sure.” You turn, finally, and Semi catches the edge of your smile. He wonders if it still pulls higher on one side like it used to. He wonders if you still remember that secret handshake you made him learn all those years ago, if you still love the sunflowers that used to grow in the upper circles of the city, if you still get that faraway look in your eye when you get lost in the labyrinth of your own mind.
It’s jarring, Semi thinks as he watches the final nasty look thrown his way before the boy disappears back into the doorway. The image these memories paint is so out of sync with the woman he sees before him now, and no amount of reminiscing will bring them back together.
“So… who’s he?”
Impassiveness slides back over your face, the momentary softness slipping out of sight. “His family has also been torn away by this war. We stick together because we have no one else. Not that it’s any of your business.”
“Come on, please,” Semi starts. This is not how he expected this reunion to go. He takes a tentative step forward. “I know you’re angry, but I truly never meant to hurt you. I just wanted to keep you and the kids safe.”
You don’t shake off his careful hand on your shoulder; you’re not sure you could. The fight is draining from your body, and as the anger recedes, you start to see him come into focus. The dusty bandage wrapped around his hand, the lines running deep around his eyes. Maybe you had survived your own nightmares, but you were a fool to think that made his any lighter.
“I’m sorry,” he says, pressing closer. “I didn’t mean for any of this to happen to you, but I’d do it again. I’m sorry I had to leave you and the kids, but I don’t regret going to fight.”
“And I don’t hate you for wanting to fight,” you relent, finally meeting his eyes. They’re sadder now, yet he can’t help feel relieved that the animosity has drained away.
You shrug, pained smile stuck awkwardly on your face. “But you still left us.”
Somehow, the lack of anger makes your words cut deeper. They have lost their accusing edge, replaced with a blunt resignation that makes his heartache. There’s resentment rallying in his stomach against your disappointment, and it mixes unpleasantly with the hope he had walked up to you with.
“I said I’m sorry, didn’t I?” He can hear the annoyance leaking through, and from the line of tension that returns to your shoulders, so do you.
There’s a long moment, full of memories and chances long lost to history, where all you can feel is the inevitable beginnings of a new battle. The lamentable reality is that you were never taught how to back down from a challenge; to do so would just send you reeling back down to the bottom of the hard-won steps you had already taken. But haven’t you fought enough? Haven’t you fought your past enough, must you now fight him too?
“You can say sorry all you like, it doesn’t change the past.” Your voice comes out more resigned, less annoyed than you had wanted.
“Why are you so set on the past?” he demands, frustration tearing through the thin blanket of peace that had settled. “I’m here now, trying to make amends and you-”
“I don’t care what’s happening now, I want answers for what happened back then! Why didn’t you trust me?”
“Of course I trusted you, I- I just…” he throws his hands up, pacing a few steps away. “It was something I needed to do. Talking to you wasn’t going to change that.”
“Oh, so I didn’t matter then?” you say, lips pressed together painfully. It’s a wet anger; blurry eyes and choked voice. You had stared down more fearsome men than Semi Eita without a tremble, but his long-forgotten familiarity somehow makes this so much harder. “My opinion didn’t matter, my life didn’t-”
“Don’t be stupid, of course you mattered! Why do you think I left, huh? You and Tsutomu matter more than anything else-”
“Well that’s not what it seemed like to me and Tsutomu!” you yell back, sick to your stomach. “One day you were here, and the next you were gone! No warning, no nothing! Tsutomu was ten, Semi. TEN.”
He hadn’t been there to see the pieces of your life shatter apart, to see Tsutomu look so confused, to hear him ask, so quiet and ashamed, if it was his fault his brother left. He hadn’t been there to see you patch your family back together with tape you couldn’t even afford and promises you literally bled to uphold.
“I was fighting to protect you-”
“You left us for dead.”
“You would be dead if they had reached the city! What was I supposed to do? Sit back and let others die for me while I did nothing?”
You huff, dragging a hand over your eyes. Your shoulder aches. “So you thought the military needed one extra person? One extra body, that’s all it took to win the war?”
“You know that’s not what I meant,” he groans.
“Do I?” you fire back, leaning forward into his personal space. “Do I know? Because I was of the understanding we were a team, and then you left without a word!”
He can tell from your face you are just as frustrated at this conversation going in circles as he is. And he knows you have a point - he did leave without saying anything, and it’s a guilt that still weighs on him. But in his core, he knows he is right too. Why shouldn’t he want to defend his home? Why shouldn’t he have gone?
“I did what I had to protect you and the kids.” His voice drops into a low anger that holds more fury than any scream could. “I’m not going to apologise for wanting to protect what I love, no matter if you appreciate it or not.”
Your eyes dart between his, narrowed and searching. There’s definitely more underlying those words, years of unspoken almosts that had to be forgotten. Even just saying that much dredges up old memories he thought long gone, lost to time and unfortunate circumstance.
“I’d appreciate not being left alone to feed-”
“Stop being dramatic, you weren’t alone. The kids are smart, and W-”
“They were literally kids!" you flare, tongue cutting with scorn sharper than any blade he's faced. "What, you wanted me to let Yachi go work in the factories? Let Tsutomu go fight in the pits? We both know that would have been a death sentence.”
“You had Wakatoshi, and-”
“Wakatoshi died!”
Semi has been stabbed before. It’s a strange sensation; if there’s enough adrenalin flooding your veins, it almost feels like nothing more than a poke. But slowly, a creeping realization will set in as the wetness of your shirt becomes too much to ignore and your eyes are drawn irrevocably down. It’s only then the pain will hit you.
This doesn’t feel like that. This is immediate pain, your words splattering sharp and bright across his chest. He stutters back a step, breaths coming in short and shallow bursts.
“What… who...”
Your lips are pressed together, face turned away from him. The breath you pull in is shaky, and when you meet his eyes, they’re apologetic and guilty.
“The… the town guard caught Tsutomu trying to pocket medicine for me, and they were going to take him but Wakatoshi stepped in and it all happened so fast I…” a breathy sigh escapes you, right on the cusp of a sob. “I’m so sorry Eita, I didn’t mean to tell you like that.”
“It’s-”
It’s not OK. Wakatoshi has been a reliable fixture in Semi’s life for years, unshakable through everything. His certainty was something Semi had always admired. And despite his severity, there was a gentleness to his composure - lifting the kids up onto his shoulders during the rare parades or quietly teaching them how to play knucklebones. It’s unthinkable, for Semi to have survived this war but Wakatoshi to not.
“I’m OK,” he says.
The quiet hand you lay on his arm doesn’t help, only serving to remind him that you lost Wakatoshi too. And maybe he lost you a long time ago too. Just one more thing to add to the never-ending list of all he’s lost to this war.
Semi can only laugh, a bitter, broken sound that echoes in his own ears. It’s an ugly thing; to fight and bleed and sacrifice for a country that has never done anything for you, only to come home and be slapped with everything else that’s slipped away in the process. Of course his selflessness would be repaid in frayed relationships and lost friends.
“I’m OK,” he repeats, because he needs it to be true this time.
“Are you?” you ask, concern slipping in under the blunt question. He wants to laugh again. You always have asked the hard questions.
Your hand slides up to cup his cheek, palm rough but touch gentle against his skin, and he leans into it rather than answer. With his eyes closed, for just this moment, he can almost believe reality isn’t quite as bleak as it actually is.
When he opens them your head is tilted, looking up at him with exhausted but understanding eyes. Sighing, your head falls forward to knock against his chest. You shoulders slump, and he slowly reaches around to grasp the back of your shirt. It’s still messy between you, and he knows this is only the beginning of a long road back to the trust you shared before.
Yet as your arms come up to wrap around him too, he thinks maybe there’s hope for him.
“I missed you,” you whisper into his shirt.
Maybe even hope for you and him. It might not ever be the same, but that is a battle to be faced later.
For now, he finally lets the tears come. For Wakatoshi. For everything he went through, for everything he put you and Tsutomu through. For the simple relief of not having to fight anymore.
He feels your arms tighten around his waist.
“It’s OK,” you tell him, and he thinks, someday, he might just believe you.

It wasn’t as if you didn’t want to be here. You did, you really did, but how could you enjoy a ball thrown in your honor when your parents had been murdered just a few days prior to this? It seemed like a cruel joke, to be expected to twirl around in a gaudy dress and perfect smile when the weight of your grief made you want to do nothing more than curl up in a ball and scream.
But for the sake of your kingdom, you had to. You would play the part of a perfect princess for as long as they needed you to. The war and multitudes of assassins had made you the last remnant of the royal family, and you were all your country had left to count on.
(Your crown has always felt more like a collar than a symbol of your sovereignty, and tonight it weighs even heavier than it usually does, choking you, stealing the breaths you so desperately sought.)
“Your highness, it’s time.” Akasuki, your lady of the bedchamber, spoke, effectively chasing away your thoughts.
A deep breath. Two. Three.
Straightening your back, you tilted your chin up. Tonight, you would put on a show. Let them see that the crown princess was more than a spoilt royal. Tonight, you would dance and smile and laugh until they were convinced that you were ready for your coronation.
You were led down the unfamiliar hallways of pale stone and shimmering gold, nothing short of the stunning extravagance the Tsukishima adored flaunting, but so unlike the cool brown and blacks of your own castle walls. The firelight illuminated your shimmering ball gown, surrounding you with an almost luminescent glow.
The guards escorting looked a little dazed every time they stole a glance at you, your etherealness commanding their attention. Good, let them be dazzled by your beauty. That meant that no one would be looking further than your skin.
“Her Royal Highness, Crown Princess Y/n.”
The large doors to the ballroom flung open and you swept into the room, shining so brightly for a moment that the guests were momentarily blinded.
You were guided down the large staircase and settled into a pale marble throne, not unlike the castle walls. The practiced smile stayed plastered on your face all the while, never once wavering even as you felt the weight of their scrutinising stares.
There you remained, on display for the subjects of two kingdoms to ogle at, to tear apart with their judgment. Your gaze never once flickered away from those who blatantly stared, almost daring them to come forward and challenge you, even as you kept up a light conversation with King Tsukishima.
A pale hand extends itself to you and you follow it back up to its owner; a tall, lean blond with his head inclined in a reluctant bow, an artificial smile plastered on his handsome features.
“May I have this dance, your highness?” The disinterest in his voice was poorly veiled, and you knew he was only asking out of courtesy, the sharp looks shot at him by his mother not going unnoticed.
You were tempted to turn him down just to see what would happen, but you knew better than to do so. Your kingdom needed this alliance after all, and it would not reflect well on you to antagonise their crown prince.
“I would be honored.” You stood up and slid your hand into his, allowing him to lead you onto the dance floor-
Wait, was that-
“Prince Tsukishima,” you gasped out, halting dead in your tracks, eyes pinned upon the blood-red string that was entwined around your linked hands. For the first time that night, your impenetrable mask had slipped, your stone-cold smile fading into one of twisted incredulity and wonder.
He whirled around, eyes flashing in annoyance as he opened his mouth to say something, but the words died out as he realized what you were staring at.
“You- you’re the one?” He sounded disbelieving, an indecipherable look in his eyes.
You bristled at his tone, fighting the urge to yank your hand out of his.
“It seems so,” you slipped back into your careful indifference, attempting to brush this off like it hadn’t shaken you to the core.
Even his eyes widened in astoundment, he remained composed enough to guide the both of you onto the dance floor, joining in on the ongoing waltz. You avoided his gaze, staring at everywhere but his face where you were sure disgust was present.
“Hey, look at me.” The gentleness in his voice was enough to throw you off guard, and you raised your head to look at him. His eyes were a warm brown, you realized with a start, much like the shades of your castle walls. “I don’t- I don’t hate this. Or you.”
You blinked at him, slightly confused and put out by his choice of words. Irritation began to flare within you and it must have shown in your expression, because Prince Tsukishima was quick to continue his words.
“It’s just not the right time for me,” he jerked his head slightly, “this, right now.”
“Not the right time for you?” You let out a scoff, your features straining as you fought back the sneer that threatened to appear. “I just lost my parents, and I have to run a kingdom on my own with no successors in the likely event I die, and you say it’s not the right time for you?”
Whatever little softness that had seeped into his eyes was now replaced by a burst of fury so intense that had you recoiling slightly.
“I lost both my brother and best friend, and gained a title I never asked for,” Prince Tsukishima hisses at you, careful to keep his expression neutral, even as his tone bites at your crumbling mask. “You’re not the only one who has lost someone important to this stupid war.”
You stumbled back, heels catching on the hem of your ballgown. He gripped you tighter, almost as if he was trying to anchor himself instead of preventing you from falling.
“I-” You didn’t know what to say. Had you been so caught up in your own pain and misery, so guarded to the point where you had missed the hurt mirrored in his eyes?
“I wasn’t the Tsukishima you were supposed to marry. That was my brother, Tsukishima Akiteru,” he continued on, voice trembling on the brink of tears. “He was out on the frontlines trying to save my best friend, at my request. I got them killed.”
His body tightened beneath your grip, and you felt the weight of his words settle upon your weary shoulders. Another death, another burden to carry. There isn’t anything you could say right now, not under the scrutinizing gaze of vultures waiting for a sign of weakness. So you squeezed him lightly, and you felt the tension easing, just ever so slightly.
As the waltz came to a close, you slid your hand into his, the red string curling around your wrists. He seemed to take the silent cue, and the two of you slipped out of the ballroom, where Tsukishima led you through the hallways, up a staircase, and onto a balcony that overlooked the gardens.
Even as the two of you stood there, leaning against the cool stone, your hands remained linked.
“I was the one who suggested cutting down on the number of guards in the castle to reinforce our army.” You broke the silence first. “The assassins broke in that night, and they killed everyone. I only got away because-”
Your throat tightened, forcing your words to a halt.
The string seemed to tighten around your pinky, even as his grip remained constant. The small gesture gave you the strength to continue, even as your voice wavered.
“My head guard, my best friend... he managed to get me out in time, and he defended me with his life.”
“It seems like we’re bound by loss, aren’t we?” A cynical chuckle escaped his lips.
Your lips tipped up in a sad smile. “It seems like it.”
The two of you stood there in silence for a while, staring out at the palace gardens. You couldn’t help but stare at the string that linked the two of you.
“Who was he? Your best friend,” Tsukishima asked.
“He,” you took in a deep breath, steadying your trembling breaths. “He was the most amazing man I have ever met. Matsukawa Issei.”
A sharp inhale from Tsukishima told you that Issei’s reputation preceded him.
“Yeah, the great Matsukawa Issei who held an entire army back on his own, is the same Mattsun that guarded the spoilt Crown Princess who never ventured further than the edges of her castle grounds.” Your chest tightened, and the memory of Issei’s smile burned, a reminder of the sacrifice he had been forced to give.
“Issei brought the world to me, in little trinkets and beautiful descriptions of the wild. He gave me everything he could, did anything just to make sure I was happy. And I used to joke around, asking him if he would die for me.” Your smile turned bitter. “I never thought that would become a reality.”
Tsukishima squeezed your hand, a soft exhale passing from his lips before he spoke.
“His name was Yamaguchi Tadashi. He was a peasant boy I had met when I followed the head cook to the market. Yamaguchi was being bullied by this group of boys, and I couldn’t sit back and watch that happen, so I helped him. I didn’t know that in doing so, I would gain my first and only friend, and that he would continue to help me as we grew.”
“Then the war started, and he was yanked away from me by the commands of the military, right into the front lines. I begged my parents to do anything to get him out of there or let me fight with him. Evidently, they said no.”
“I turned to my brother then, and he agreed to sneak out onto the front lines to find him when he had to go for the next war meeting. We all know how that ended.”
Something wet dripped onto your linked hands, and you watched as glistening teardrops splashed onto your skin, sliding down into the red string. You followed it back up to Tsukishima’s face, where his eyes were clenched shut, face twisted in an attempt not to cry.
“It’s not your fault,” you whispered, disgustingly aware of the hypocrisy present in those words. Who were you to absolve his guilt when you couldn’t even forgive yourself for a crime you hadn’t committed?
“Then it’s not yours either,” he threw back, though there was no malice in his tone.
It was your turn to shut your eyes, fighting the burning in your eyes. Your mask had all but fallen to pieces, and you weren’t about to let the remnants fall away now. You couldn’t afford to.
“Tell me more about him, about your Issei,” Tsukishima said softly.
“Only if you share about your Yamaguchi.”
There the two of you stood, hands intertwined as you swapped stories of your lost confidants under the gentle glow of the moon, the murmurs of the ball playing in the background.
Angry whispers rushing past your balcony caught your attention. Tsukishima stepped slightly in front of you as the doors burst open.
“Your highnesses!” A knight pants out, face red and sweaty. “We’ve been looking all over for you!”
“We merely stepped out for a breather.” You said cooly, your features slipping startling quick into a glittering cool smile.
“It’s not safe,” another knight stepped forward, out of the shadows.
“Sir Kageyama,” Prince Tsukishima greeted the guard coldly. “Sir Hinata.”
“Your highnesses, please come back inside.” Sir Hinata begs, recovering from where he had bent over in exhaustion.
“We’ll come back in when we’re ready.” The tall blonde waved a dismissive hand at them, and Sir Kageyama seethed, steam practically pouring out of his ears.
“Listen up you spoilt brat-” “Kageyama don’t-” “Your mother is worried sick about you, terrified that she’s going to lose another son, and here you are cosying up with your betrothed before the marriage ceremony?”
You hadn’t even realized Tsukishima had let go of your hand until he had Sir Kageyama pressed up against the wall, fist curled up in the knight’s tunic.
“Shut up.” He gritted out. The shoulders of his suit pulled taut, and you recognized the venom in his voice. It was one you had struck out at others with, often, and one that you knew would result in bloodshed.
“Prince Tsukishima,” you laid a hand on his tense shoulder. “We should go in anyway, the ball’s about to end.”
Sir Hinata shot you a grateful look when Tsukishima let go of his companion, and you wrapped an arm around his, tugging lightly to guide him back to the ongoing ball.
The two knights bowed, albeit one more stiffly than the other.
“Do you think they’ll notice if we skipped the end of the ball?” Tsukishima murmured, shifting your hand so it rested more comfortably around his arm.
Your lips quirked up in a genuine smile, just for a split second, before you fixed it back into your usual hollow one.
“I don’t know, you tell me if they’ll notice the crown heirs are missing when our betrothal is announced.”
“Fair enough,” he sighed. “I guess we’ll have no choice but to go back then.”
“Lead the way, my prince.”

Heyyyy me again! I really loved your last fic so Imma request another, if that's okay! If you're still doing drabbles, could I possibly get a Hiccanna Angel/Demon AU fic with the sentence starter “If you don’t hug me right now I think I might fall apart.”? I'm in the mood for big boi angst lol (also kinda see Hiccup as the demon one here because of the dragon and fire connection, but reversed would be interesting too!)
I think I’ll go for what you suggested since it makes the most sense character-wise! I hope you enjoy!
****
Angels and Demons coexisted as enemies for many millennia. Good versus evil, light versus dark, virtue versus vice, Heaven versus Hell.
And Anna was okay with this. She was old, far older than the human numbers could reach. She thought she had seen it all. But that was before him.
The first time she was sent to Earth was on her first mission as a Guardian Angel. She had been protecting a little girl with brown hair and brown eyes who loved ice skating and playing with her brother.
Anna admired the way the family interacted; laughing, playing, creating. And how they created an orange and yellow light that kept the darkness away.
She listened intently one night when the little girl asked, “Mommy, why do we light the fire?”
The mother tucked her child securely in her bed, the covers pulled up to her chin. “Because there are evil things in this world, things that want to hurt us, and the fire keeps them away.”
Anna’s feathers ruffled at the mention of evil. How could someone even think about hurting people so innocent? Why they had never done anything wrong.
“Like the boogeyman?”
The mother smoothed back her daughter’s hair. “Yes, my love, like the boogeyman. But the fire keeps him away. You have nothing to worry about. And if the fire ever goes out, you have your guardian angel to protect you.”
Anna felt herself glow a little brighter as her ward’s eyes lit up.
“I bet she’s beautiful,” the little girl whispered.
Her mother kissed her on the head and said her goodnight, placing one of the brother’s head as well. How happy they were. How perfect that moment was.
Then that moment ended.
“Be careful,” the mother chided them.
“We will,” the boy replied with a laugh as his sister pulled him towards the frozen lake.
Anna walked carefully along the treeline above them, keeping a watchful eye, but she wasn’t worried. They had done this a hundred times before, what could go wrong?
How she wished she had paid more attention.
The ice cracked under the little girl’s feet, her sobs being drowned out by her brother's reassurances.
Anna couldn’t move, a force was keeping her rooted to the spot and she was furious.
She watched on in anger and fear as the brother coaxed his sister a few steps forward. The ice cracked, the little girl screamed and Anna was suddenly free from her trap.
She flew forward, grabbing the little girl by the armpits and flying her to the other side of the ice where it was thicker.
Anna smiled as the little girl looked around, her eyes finding her brother’s.
It was a blissful moment that was ruined by the deafening sound of cracking ice.
The brother let out a cry of surprise as it gave way under his feet, pulling him into the freezing waters below.
Anna cried out, but she couldn’t save him, couldn’t even touch him. She wasn’t his guardian angel.
“Jack!”
That’s when she saw him.
He was standing on the other side of the pond across from her. He had blood-red eyes and black scales running along his skin. He was frowning and. from a distance, Anna thought he looked angry.
“Hey!” She cried out angrily, leaving her ward’s side for a moment to fly towards the demon.
He disappeared when she reached him. She let out an angry shout before returning to the little girl’s side. Watching her sob as she ran for her parents.
Jack became an angel for his sacrifice.
Anna met him in Heaven. Shook his hand and apologized for not being able to save him. He didn’t hold it against her, just asked for updates on his sister every so often.
Anna would watch over the little girl until she was old and was ready to go.
When she closed her eyes for the final time, Anna was there; her hand out in greeting, ready to take her to Heaven. To her brother.
“I was right.” She said, taking Anna’s hand. “You are beautiful.”
Anna smiled. “I will miss looking after you,”
“You can come to visit me anytime,”
Anna knew it didn’t work that way but didn’t say anything, just smiled and nodded.
They were met at the gates by Jack and her other family members she had lost over the years. The moment she stepped through the gates, she was reverted to her child form, running to hug her brother for the first time in a long time.
Anna would have cried if she were human.
But her heart did feel funny, watching them.
Her next ward was a little girl in Scotland. The girl had a head of curly red hair and a bow and arrows at six years old.
Anna knew she had her work cut out for her.
She watched on from a tree as the little girl played hide and seek with her mother and received a brand new bow from her father, much to her mother’s dismay.
It was beautiful until the little girl screamed.
Anna was up immediately, landing in front of the mother and daughter, using her powers to still the bear until they were safely out of the way. She saw the way its eyes glowed red and she knew that this was no ordinary bear, but a demon-possessed one.
The father and his men charged the bear, pointing spears at it and a rush of panic flew through Anna. No, no, no not again.
The bear moved right past her and she was once again rooted to the spot, unable to move, unable to help in any way.
The bear slashed at the wooden spear, effectively ripping the sharp end of it off.
The father threw the splintered wood aside, ready to take on the monster with his bear-hands.
It roared, ready to go in for the kill.
“NO!” Anna screamed, breaking free of the hold with all of her ability and slamming herself into the bear. It staggered to the side, jaw sinking into the man’s ankle instead of his neck.
Anna watched as the father screamed and the demon came out of the bear.
It was the same one from the lake.
His red eyes met Anna’s gold ones. He seemed surprised, intrigued.
Anna, however, was livid. She lunged at him, only for him to disappear the same as he had before. Anna screamed out in fury.
The father was alive, at the cost of his foot. But he was alive.
And Anna was in trouble.
“Άννα.”
She was suddenly standing in the blinding white room of her boss.
Not God, much worse.
“Elsa,” Anna replied, turning to see the head Guardian Angel standing before her.
“Άννα,” She repeated, using Anna’s original angel name. “You meddled.”
Anna frowned. “I had to! That demon was going to kill my ward’s father!”
“You cannot meddle, Άννα. You should know better.”
“Come on, I saved somebody! Isn’t that what guardian angels are supposed to do?” Anna argued.
Elsa only gave Anna an icy glare. “I’m sorry. But I cannot allow you to watch over Merida any longer.”
“What!”
"Acts like this have consequences, Άννα.”
“That’s so stupid! It wasn’t even my fault! If that stupid demon hadn’t been there-”
“Enough,” Elsa said sternly.
Anna cowered underneath her gaze but was still stewing with anger.
“You are on probation from guardian duties. You will be assigned to another job until it is through.”
Anna was on probation for centuries and it felt like a millennium. When she was finally released on another mission, she was assigned a boy this time.
Who was a troublemaker, of course. She always seemed to get those. But Anna didn’t mind; in fact, she was overjoyed because she was always on the move. Being locked up in heaven will do that to you.
Her ward was living the life. Just accepted into college at fourteen and being praised by his brother.
Anna watched on with admiration as the two talked. Her siblings up in Heaven never showed any emotions, perhaps that came with being an angel, but Anna longed for love.
Maybe that made her a bad angel, she didn’t care. Love was a fascinating prospect.
Then everything went bad. Just like it always does.
Anna noticed the fire right after the two boys did. She flew alongside the two brothers, terrified as she watched multiple guardian angels flying around the place.
Where was Tadashi’s? Anna suddenly realized, looking around to find Rapunzel.
She finally caught sight of her near the sidewalk, completely frozen in place, unable to move, to do anything.
“No,” Anna said with sudden terror. “No, no, no, no-”
She turned to find that Hiro and Tadashi had moved, gone closer to the flames.
“Tadashi no!” Hiro cried, latching onto his older brother’s arm.
“Somebody has to help.”
“No!” Anna cried flying forward, trying to catch Tadashi, but it was too late. All she could do was stand in front of Hiro and shield him from the blast.
“Tadashi!”
Hiro’s cries were faint in Anna’s ears as she looked around the scene. Guardian angels were flying everywhere, following people away from the fire and helping the firefighters put out the blaze, Rapunzel was free from her hold and she was crying, and there was that demon again.
Anna’s eyes landed on him at the steps of the building. He was gazing up at the fire, reflecting ominously in his red eyes.
He wouldn’t get away this time.
“Hey!” Anna cried out.
He didn’t move and Anna flew forward, tackling him to the ground.
He let out a cry of surprise and a grunt as they landed against the hard earth.
“What’s your problem with me, huh? Why do you keep killing the people my wards care about? Every time you’re around one of them dies!”
The demon below her didn’t say anything, just took on her wrath with surprising calmness.
This made Anna even more furious. “You don’t feel guilty at all? Ha. Should expect that from filthy demons like you! You probably take pleasure in killing people-”
“We don’t kill people,”
“What?” Anna asked, glaring at him.
The demon cleared his throat, as the best he could with Anna sitting on his chest. “We don’t kill people. We just cause chaos. Posses them, mess with them, make bad things happen, yes, but we don’t kill people.”
“Then how do you explain-”
“Do you think you guardian angels would let us get that far? We can’t overpower you, you know that. So, how can we kill anyone?”
Anna’s mouth went dry at his words.
No. He had to be lying. He had to be.
“Then how are these people dying?”
“Don’t ask me. Maybe you should take it up with the higher authorities.”
Anna’s world was crashing down around her. Heaven wouldn’t- they couldn’t-
“It’s not the Devil who chooses when people die, Angelface.”
Anna ripped her hands off him, stumbling backward, trying to get away from him.
“Then why were you there? Every time you were there.”
“We’re in tandem, I guess. I’m just a worker Demon. Like you. At least” - he frowned. “-I was.”
“We are nothing alike.” Anna spat.
“Keep telling yourself that, Angelface.”
“Stop calling me that! My name is-”
Anna was transported into Elsa’s room again.
“Άννα.”
“What?” Anna yelled, turning to face her superior, who was stone-face. “What, huh? What do you want from me? Want me to go on probation again? Because I’m sick and tired of watching people die, Έλσα.”
“You interacted with a demon,  Άννα. This is serious.”
“So what? He was some beat demon, there to start a fire that was killing people.”
“Demons don’t kill people,  Άννα. The lord decides when they are to come to Heaven.”
“What?” Anna said, angrier than ever. “But we’re Heaven! We’re supposed to be the good guys! The light! Killing people is wrong!”
“Άννα. Calm down.”
“No! No, why? Why does some unseen celestial being get to decide the fate of good people? Old age, okay, fine, but young people? Children? That’s wrong.”
“We serve the lord, Άννα. We don’t question.”
“Well, the lord can beat it! I don’t care! This is wrong! How can you not see that?”
“I’m sorry, Άννα.”
Anna was cast out of Heaven immediately. Her halo stripped from her, her wings turning a dark black to signify to the other angels her crimes. She would walk the Earth as a ghost.
She hit the ground near where her last assignment had been.
“So,” the demon said, sitting next to her when she came to. “I’m guessing taking it up with the higher authorities didn’t go so well?”
Anna felt something for the first time in her life. She left a million things at once and it hurt.
She turned to the demon with watery eyes and she noticed for the first time that his eyes weren’t red anymore. In fact, they were a really pretty green.
“If you don’t hug me right now I think I might fall apart.” She said.
The request didn’t seem to shock the demon. He just opened his arms and allowed Anna to hug him, to sob into his shoulder.
He wrapped his arms around her and squeezed as hard as he could.
Anna felt something she had never felt before, but couldn’t place the emotion. Over time she would learn, but now all she wanted to do was cry and be held.
“Any chance you’ll give me that name now, Angelface?” he asked softly.
“Anna,” She choked out. “My name is Anna.”
“Nice to meet you, Anna. My name’s Hiccup. And I think we’re gonna be spending a lot of time together.”

Trolling Su
Rating: K+  Words: 2455 Description: Korra keeps her promise to Baatar and Izumi teaches Suyin a much needed lesson.
For Lin and Tenzin, the airship ride to the Fire Nation was unbearably awkward. It felt like they were parents having to bail their child out of prison. Korra had sneaked into the Fire Nation with Baatar Jr. in tow. It was all because of a promise she made to keep the two separated if Baatar failed to talk Kuvira out of surrendering to Republic City during the Invasion of the United Republic only a few days prior. In a last effort to save her son from being tried for aiding the Great Uniter in her war crimes, the Matriarch of Zaofu even sponsored the Avatar’s plans and sponsored hers and her son’s passage in the cargo hold of some merchant vessel in an attempt to have the voyage go unseen by border control in the United Republic and Fire Nation Islands.
When Lin and Tenzin landed, they found Lin’s younger sister waiting for their arrival on the runway of the Royal Airfield, positively quaking while waiting for ‘an audience with her Lordship, Izumi’.
“Spirits, I miss the days when she was like a sister and we could just waltz in and –” Suyin grumbled, furious that no one allowed her to see her eldest son yet.
“Cry about how your sister beat you in sparring again?” Izumi asked, appearing behind them in all of her grey-hair and crimson-robed glory, accompanied by Tenzin’s two older siblings of all people.
“Zumi!” Lin exclaimed, rushing to hug the Fire.
“Bumi?” Tenzin asked, eyeing his older brother with surprise. “Kya?”
“We were on the islands just visiting when we got the report!” Kya explained, hugging her little brother first and then his ex-girlfriend.
“What report?” Tenzin asked.
“The report that Izumi had my son arrested?” Suyin asked pointedly.
“Spirits! No!” Izumi exclaimed. “The one that announced they’d been seen, the Avatar and the Great Uniter’s Fiancée, without visas or explanations for their presence on our pumice.”
“It was supposed to be Baatar’s punishment for his involvement in Kuvira’s Regime!”
“How is sending him on a vacation in my country a punishment?” Izumi asked, accepting a drink from a passing palace servant as they walked into the Red Keep.
“The punishment isn’t sending him on vacation! It is keeping him from Kuvira during the trials!” Suyin explained carefully.
“So he can get away un-accused without any sort of sentencing for building that spirit mecha?” Izumi asked Suyin.
“Well—” Suyin stammered. “Kuvira coerced him to—brainwashed him—”
“—You know, I was going to let them go, at first, as long as they didn’t disturb the peace we have worked so hard to achieve.” The Fire Lord explained, entering a private parlour of the palace. “But after Kya gave me a few drinks, apparently I gave the order to have them detained for illegal trespassing.”
“Why?” Suyin asked. “He’s my son!”
“I know, and I regretted it for a few minutes, but then stopped once you started talking,” Izumi finished, kicking her feet up onto a coffee table as she sat on a love seat with Kya.
“Bu—” Suyin stammered. “Zumi you can’t be serious!”
Izumi simply smirked as she took a sip of her drink and folded one arm under her other elbow.
“Oh, you’re cruel,” Lin exclaimed, laughing as she noticed the wicked grin just beyond the rim of the cup that Izumi made no attempt to hide.
“What have you done?!” Suyin yelled, stomping her foot, shaking the room. “Release my son at once! Lin you can’t let her do this! He’s a Beifong!”
“The Beifong name might mean something in Zaofu, and maybe Republic City on some days, but Suyi, this is the Fire Nation,” Lin apologized to her little sister.
“You guys are such—UGH!” Suyin yelled, pacing the room in her fury, only a few moments away from collapsing the entire palace with her bending.
“Do you have back up?” Bumi whispered in Izumi’s ear, standing behind the love seat with his hand’s on her shoulders, mildly concerned for their safety.
“Always. I’m the Fire Lord,” Izumi replied.
“You guys are so mean!” Tenzin yelled at Lin, Izumi, and his siblings. “Come on, Suyin. I’ll help you find Junior and Korra. They don’t deserve this treatment.”
The other four watched the Air Nomad lead the enraged earthbending matriarch from the room with mild amusement.
“Was all this a ruse to spin up my little sister for your entertainment?” Lin asked curiously once they had gone.
“Only partially. I do believe Baatar needs to face some sort of judgement for creating the weapon that enabled that power-hungry- child to invade my Father and Avatar Aang’s masterpiece and destroy its capital city—but those crimes were not committed in my country, so—” Izumi sighed and ser her cup down. “I could not be the one to do the judging… But he needed to be sentenced to something and then Kya reminded me that after the 100 year war, the Fire Nation lost all previous visa agreements with other countries. If we can’t cross their borders without reason and permission, they can’t cross ours. While it is not justice for the mecha, it’s something.” Izumi said, taking another sip of water.
“I didn’t know you knew how to intimidate,” Suyin exclaimed, impressed that her older sister’s nerd of an ex-boyfriend managed to get the location of the Avatar and the Great Uniter’s Ex-Fiance out of him without taking off fingers as Suyin had suggested.
“I may not have been the greatest Councilman, but I picked up some things,” Tenzin replied, walking quickly down an underground of the Capital City’s highest security prison. “KORRA!!! JUNIOR!!!”
“Oh shut up! I can’t stand the echo, allow me,” Suyin said closing her eyes and stomping a single, heavy foot down to feel the vibrations of the earth to search for her son and the Avatar’s signature heartbeats. “This way!”
Tenzin followed suit. By the time he caught up with the matriarch of Zaofu, she had torn off the iron door to the cell and run in only to be punted back into the opposite wall by the inmates of that cell.
“That prophet was right about an escape opportunity on the fourth moon of the seventh year of—”
“You’re not escaping if you weren’t meant to escape,” Suyin said, grimly lifting a hand as the other rubbed her head, bending a spear of earth from the floor of the prison cell into the ceiling, pinning them to the roof of the prison hall by their shackles.
“That doesn’t look anything like Korra or Junior,” Tenzin commented, resting as Suyin found her feet again.
“They’re the same weights as Korra and Junior,” Suyin replied, standing up.
“I thought Seismic Sense identified people by their heartbeats!”
“Yeah, mine was never as acute as Mom and Lin’s, so I had to make do with weights and densities,”
“Do I they know that?
“They’re the same weights as Korra and Junior,” Suyin replied, standing up and dusting herself off as the guards came to collect the ‘escaped’ criminals.
“My Lord, Masters Tenzin and Suyin have discovered at which prison your guests were being held,” a palace servant wearing Earth Kingdom clothing announced while Lin, Izumi, Bumi, and Kya were enjoying a large plate of lychee, longan, and rambutans.
“Good,” Fire Lord Izumi replied, discarding a rambutan skin in one of the large tins beside the plate of fresh fruit.
“Were being held?” Lin asked curiously. “Where are they now?”
Izumi raised a hand and the palace servant in Earth Kingdom clothes earthbent open a secret door revealing the two in chains in a chamber just off the parlour.
“Lin?!” Korra yelled.
The Palace guard threw a flat metal strip over the Avatar’s mouth. “You were told to be silent!” the guard yelled.
“Tadashi, that isn’t necessary. Unbind them please, I’m sure Lin has many questions for them… and they should eat,” Izumi instructed, sitting back on the lounger with a handful of longan.
Tadashi and Korra both exchanged rather menacing glares as the earthbender unlocked the platinum cuffs and hung them on hooks on his belt.
“Korra, you let yourself get captured by the Fire Lord?” Lin asked incredulously.
“My Father would be so proud of me!” Izumi whispered to Kya and Bumi with a smirk as the other’s snickered.
“Okay—first of all, she didn’t capture me! Her cronies did—”
“And who trained them?” Izumi asked.
“Her lordship was the one to discover your hiding place and coordinate the attack—” Tadashi added as Baatar sat down on an empty couch and reached for some fruit.
“You didn’t think to use the Avatar State to escape?” Lin inquired.
“I thought you and Tenzin didn’t want me to use it except for when my life was in actual danger!”
“You didn’t know Izumi’s guards! They could have been Red Lotus insurgents or something.”
“For your information, we’re confident we’ve scourged them from our soil, but—” Izumi tried to chime in.
“Izumi revealed herself pretty immediately so—” Korra exclaimed.
“You were afraid of her?” Lin asked, raising a brow and turning to her friend.
“She explained that she knew what we were doing and how she thought Baatar still deserved some sort of sentencing and—”
“In short, the Avatar knew she wasn’t in mortal danger and therefore didn’t need to initiate the Avatar State. Anyways, this isn’t about Korra, Lin. It is about making sure Baatar knows he overstepped his bounds in the Earth Kingdom and United Republic and that Suyin knows she can do nothing to hide it,” Izumi explained. “Not from us, at least.”
“Like how my mother covered up her involvement with the Terra Triad,” Lin realized, looking up at the ceiling in relief.
“Exactly!” Izumi raised a rambutan to her friend.
Lin let out a sigh of relief and picked up her cup of tea.
“So when are we supposed to expect Su and Tenz to come back raging?” Lin asked.
“A few days. My agents report her sub-par seismic sense abilities mistook two legitimate inmates for Korra and Baatar…”
“She also thought that Zhu Li was Kuvira the night she tried to assassinate the Great Uniter,” Baatar whispered bitterly.
Lin clicked her tongue and shook her head. “I guess that’s what she gets for being cocky and not practicing.”
Izumi shrugged.
“I wonder what skills you missed. Toph mentioned neither of you ever really grasped the finer points of metalbending,” Korra chimed in, trying to make conversation as they waited for further updates on Su and Tenzin’s wild goose chase.
“She WHAT?” Lin shrieked as Izumi, Bumi, and Kya burst into equally raucious fits of laughter.
“I can’t believe we still haven’t found them!” Tenzin sighed in defeat as he and Suyin walked down another alley on another island following another lead that lead to nothing.
“Wait!” Suyin said. “Is it just me or do you get the sense that we’re being followed?”
They both stopped walking to listen. There was no breeze under the cover of the high walls that surrounded them on all sides. It was the perfect place for an ambush, they realized as a dozen men in long, hooded black coats appeared on the roofs of the flanking buildings.
One drew a knife. Suyin stepped in front of Tenzin and raised metal stips off of her necklace preparing for a fight. She fired first as he threw his knife . He missed intentionally and out of the handle, fluttered a rolled up piece of parchment.
Just come back, Suyi was written on it in Izumi’s hand.
“Not until I have my son back!” Suyin yelled, crushing the paper in her hand, tossing it up, and shredding it with a swipe of several metal strips bent into blades of a knife.
One of the cloaked men threw another dagger. “And what makes you think he has been held in one place?”
“Fuck the Fire Lord!” Suyin groaned turning up to the sky.
“What was it?” Tenzin asked.
“Zumi,” Suyin growled.
“She’s had him the whole time?”
“Yes,” Suyin confirmed.
They both waltzed straight into a meeting Izumi was having with her war generals in the throne room.
All of the generals stood upon the intrusion ready to defend their Lord to the death only to find the matriarch of Zaofu and the Air Nation’s only grand master.
“Session dismissed. We will recommence tomorrow,” Izumi snapped, standing with her hands folded in front of her, eyes narrowed and mouth pressed into a tight frown.
The Generals all saluted and filed out.
“WHERE ARE THEY?” Suyin demanded.
“The pool in the guest quarter,” Izumi answered immediately
Suyin ran with Tenzin at her heel.
When they arrived at the pool, they found Korra screaming as she slid down a water slide that lifted at the end, launching the Avatar into the air.
“WATERBENDING BOMB!” Korra yelled as she came crashing into the pool shooting a column of water into the air.
“Kya! Heads up!” Baatar yelled, passing the ball to the older waterbender as Bumi and Lin opposed them in a game of water polo on the opposite side of the pool.
“My Son!” Suyin yelled, running towards the water’s edge.
“Mother?” Baatar gasped, spinning in the water.
Lin intercepted the ball and caught it, holding onto it, eagerly waiting for her little sister’s reaction.
Suyin stood, dumbfounded.
“I see you’ve been—treated well,” Tenzin uttered, displaying an equal expression of confusion.
“His paperwork,” Izumi said appearing out of a secret passage way, handing Suyin a stapled stack of papers.
Charges: Illegally crossing International borders without Visa and Resisting Detainment Penalties: -          500,000 Yuan fee to be paid to the Department of Border Control of the Fire Nation -          500,000 Yuan fee to be paid to the National Border Protection of the United Republic -          5 years probation (details outlined on page 6 of Release Documentation)
“He has already paid the fees, and knows the consequences of not reporting to the United Republic Probationary Offices here, in the Earth Kingdom, Water Tribes, and URN. Don’t try to pay off the probation officers, or any other government officials in any country to buy his freedom. No more crimes will go unpunished, my dearest little Suyi.” Izumi said firmly.
Suyin’s hands shook as she read the front page bearing her son’s name and the words “Yuyiao Provincial Police Department, Fire Nation” and fell to her knees.
Baatar moved towards his mother by the pool edge, but Lin stopped him.
“Don’t,” Lin whispered. “She needs to learn just like you.”
“Only justice can bring peace,” Korra whispered, quoting one of her previous incarnations.

A/N
I was rereading some old one shots and remembered just how neglected the Gaang’s children are in the fandom and needed an excuse for them all to get together again, so.... HERE IT IS! :D
Also, Tadashi is one of my original characters that regularly appears as an earthbending member of Fire Lord Izumi’s personal guard in a lot of my other stuff that is posted... somewhere.

I JUST SAW HTTYD 3 TODAY
Un. Follow. Me now, this is going to be the only thing I post about for weeks.
Please, please do not read this if you haven’t been a lucky bastard of an Australian. Do not click read more on pc, go back to your blog and block the tag httyd 3 spoilers on mobile, unfollow me if you want to.
There was no assigned seat system so I sat in front of the door to go in first and get a good one, but two guys (as in, fandom age) beat me. I wonder if they have tumblr...
Things I loved (prepare for a long list):
THAT OPENING SCENE
Hiccup boards a ship to free dragons and swordfights this guard dude. Guard knocks over a lamp, setting the deck on fire and Hiccup and a blue glowing Toothless deadass walk through it. Boi that was awesome
This is Berk.
Lots of action scenes in general. Hiccup with a sword is my new aesthetic. I did not pay a lot of attention, but I think he fought left handed.
The visuals.
Hot.
Damn.
Thought httyd 2 Berk was impressive? I think not.
THAT NEW BERK ISLAND
THE CAMP
THE WATERFALL
THE CLOUDS
SNOWY NEW BERK ISLAND
THE SAND
Oh boy the sand. Because there are no places like that waterfall or new Berk island it is obviously fake, but the clouds and sand... If you took a screenshot and said it was a photo I’m pretty sure 99% of the people would believe you.
All the decors. Dreamworks made So. Many. Environments. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an animated movie with this level and amount of sets and details. This beats Finding Dory, Big Hero 6, httyd 2 by far. Maybe Zootopia and Moana reached this level, but never on this scale.
The composition. Whoever did the cinematography, kudos to you. The fight scenes were awesome, actually, most of the shots were.
The music. John Powell amirite??? When Hiccup sits there with his map. When they introduce Grimmel’s fort. When they go into the waterfall. Test flight when Light Fury saves Hiccup...
Drago’s fleet was cool, but Grimmel has a freaking aircraft/helicopter thing. Who does this guy think he is? Norbert the Nutjob?
Speaking of Grimmel HE SAID IT HE SAID IT WHEN HE BROKE INTO HICCUP’S HOUSE
“You wish for a world where humans and dragons live as equals? That will be the end of civilization.” Or something like that. Can you hear my book fandom heart beating faster? There was even a faintly recognizable ‘history repeats itself’.
The entirety of Berk on the move. Dragons carrying bags, entire ships with stuff and lots and lots of citizens. I don’t know when Hiccup acquired all this power to make people listen to him immediately, but he’s owning it.
The gang, minus Snotlout, had an actual part in the plot, unlike httyd 1 and 2 where they were mainly background characters. Gobber had a running gag with funny round dragons. I LOVE THEM OK they are so round.
TINY HICCUP IN THE FLASHBACKS Stoick was so sweet on him, and the way he speaks about Valka.... Take notes Disney, that’s a declaration of love.
No hate on Light Fury. She was the amazing ball of feral sass that I hoped she would be. She noped out when Toothless tried to flirt and yeeted Hiccup off his back. You go girl.
Toothless being a Skrill.
Toothless being da king. I got chills. Toothless my baby you are so amazing
That scene where Grimmel symbolically rips off Hiccup’s dragon-y wings, night fury pauldron and leg... Cressida Cowell would be proud of that.
“The world if not ready for dragons. Yet”
HICCUP TRULY SAID IT CAN I GET ALL BOOK FANS TO SAY IT WITH ME?
At the last hand thing where Hiccup slowly takes his hand off Toothless, I swear I heard someone cry softly. I don’t blame them.
Have I mentioned the visuals yet?
Things that I thought were very good, but not True Perfection My Life Is Complete 10/10 level good:
The ending was kind of sudden. Grimmel is defeated and then Hiccup decides to let Toothless go free? And then the entirety of Berk unsaddles their dragons to let them go? Yes, I understand, but I thought it would have taken an ENTIRE movie for him to do that. It WAS there throughout the movie, but it was never the main focus (the way Tadashi’s death was in BH6). The attention was always on either Grimmel or the Light Fury.
This in general. The emotions were the subplots instead of the main ones.
The whole “What is Hiccup without Toothless?” was a most perfect plot that kind of.... was resolved far easier than I hoped. It was still good, just not “hero the hard way”-level good.
“Hiccup makes Toothless a self-flying tail fin while that was a major point of their soulmate-ness” was missing some emotional weight. Hiccup was clearly super distressed, it was just not addressed a lot.
The Hiccstrid wedding plot was nice and I suspect lots of shippers will have their funerals in theatre, however, I think that too was not “companions of the Dragonmark”-level good. BUT THEY ARE SO CUTE! THEY ARE SUCH A REALISTIC AND GOOD COUPLE LIKE THEY WERE IN HTTYD 2. No mushy romance, just two badass Vikings who are so comfortable around each other it can only be true love.
Random stuff:
Eret might be gay for Gobber.
Snotlout might have slapped Hiccup’s butt.
Valka beat Spitelout (voiced by David Tennant despite not having any real lines) in arm wrestling.
Ruffnut annoying Grimmel the way only she can.
Valka has bits of grey in her hair, but her face still looks super young.
The whole gang has flight suits
Things I did not like:
Toothless fell in love too fast. He ditched Hiccup’s flirting tactics and made her a drawing. Cool. He got mad when she stepped on the lines. Cool. But then she got mad as well and Toothless just.... left it at that. Apparently he was so lovestruck he let Light Fury trample his art. No.
Things I hated with every inch of my being (that is not a lot of inches by the way):
Snotlout flirting with a Valka.
Gods... He is younger than Hiccup. Valka is Hiccup’s mom. Blergh.
Things I understand and fit the movie verse but annoyed me because it killed the entire meaning of Cressida Cowell’s conclusion (yes this is very specific):
The ending.
The dragons leave. Hiccup smiles through his tears because he knows this is the best thing to do. Toothless becomes king of the dragon world. Light Fury is his queen. Hiccup and Astrid marry and have cute children. Hiccup grows a beard. So far so good. Very good ending.
But then. Then Toothless reappears and meets Hiccup’s son and daughter. -_-
I don’t know about you, but wasn’t the whole point that dragons went into the hidden world to hide from humans? Wasn’t the whole point that ‘great things are only made out of love and pain’ and that doing the good thing also meant letting Toothless go? I wanted a heartbreaking ending. The bittersweet one from book 12. And this just felt like a fairytale that was too good to be true.
Yet at the same time, I like this ending. Toothless has his own life. Hiccup is his own person without Toothless. He’s a good chief and everyone is generally happy. The world does not believe dragons exist. Except for Berk.
Berk is this special place that dragons sometimes visit before returning back to the hidden world because Berlin’s do love dragons.
And come on. Kids and parents would riot if Hiccup and Toothless did separate for good.
Things that whacked me in the face like
"There were dragons when I was a boy"
BUT HE DID NOT ONLY SAY THAT HE SAID THE ENTIRE THING
THE ENTIRE THING from ‘There were dragons when I was a boy’ TO ‘leaving not a bone, not a fang, in the earth for the men of the future to remember them by.’
I died.

BH6 Snippets - 2/18/2023
Did some work on the Ghost’s Fury sequel last night, we’re up to 22 consecutive chapters so some nice progress going here:
But did he want to learn that?  Part of him did, the part that always wanted to fly higher and farther, the part that was still that young Fury convinced that if he just flapped hard enough, he could reach the sun and pluck it out of the sky.
Another part, the sensible older-brother part, said that learning with the intent to dive in with his little brother on his back was a bad idea. Hiro could get ripped off by the contrary winds, and since he was too small to be able to use his weight against the winds, he’d be whipped around and around until enough ice coated him and the storm had tired of him before being blasted down to the ocean.  You know, if a Skrill didn’t nab him first.
And then there was the fact that a Yokai was wanting to go into the storm with him.  Forget all his reservations about having a Yokai strapped to his back, he didn’t know what the extra weight would do to him, and Hiro would be cross if the storm ripped Obake off his back and dunked him in the ocean.  Granted, it’d be a clean way to be rid of him…but still.
“Not today,” Tadashi said finally, angling away from the storm and towards the Yokai-nest, feeling Hiro and Obake turning to stare back at the towering clouds.  Felt like a pair of hatchlings on his back, the two of them basically on the same misbehaving wavelength.
Was that what bothered him about the two of them together? That either one enabled the other’s actions?  But that involved viewing Obake on an equal level as his brother as opposed to a cunning and dangerous predator.  Forget the fact that dragons themselves were cunning and dangerous predators, Obake had still shot Hiro down and that was a problem.
Tadashi: yes actually flying into a storm IS cool but Obake agrees so I’m against this on principle.
Also of the three mentioned Obake is the only one who isn’t a Night Fury in this.

DA!prompt #4
@insectoid5 @domestic-assassin-au (Did this work?)
Bug, I saw your repost of Anna showing some serious leg in a fancy dress and got thinking (No, not that): what if Elsa's next target was a high-profile gang person hosting a fancy party? Security would be tight in and around the building, so Elsa will be forced to strap a weapon (concealable 3-shot pistol, knife, poison dart?, etc) to her thigh. For some reason I’m at a loss for, not only is Anna invited to this event, she takes a (very slightly) more active role in the operation, like small-scale distractions or surveillance w/ Kristoff & Tadashi to ID & KO the gang hierarchy’s small fish that could slow Elsa down both to/from her target. These guys are so low on the food chain higher-ups don’t miss them, but noticeable enough that standard attendees realize that the guy who’s been lounging by the drinks table for the past hour is no longer there. Anyway: that pink thing in her right hand? It’s basically a modified Japanese metal fan: not only are the outer “leaf” edges sharpened, but the “leaves” themselves are a series of blades that can be unpinned and thrown or used in one’s hands if necessary (and assuming the user has the right skill, which Anna does not. But she gets to keep a bladed fan, from Elsa’s employers no less, as a memento/personal weapon, which is AWESOME!)
The Org provides the dresses, weapons, infiltration/extraction transports and forged invites. All the DA!Frozen cast is attending for their own reasons:
Elsa’s there for her job, short & simple. In/out ASAP, with just enough socializing not to draw attn to her sudden departure so soon after arriving, but not enough to be too memorable to attendees when body is found and building is locked down. Like Anna (below), she’s dressed to kill in something looking like this.
Tadashi and Kristoff are taking Elsa and Anna, respectively, on an expenses-paid-by-host date, but also are subtly watching out for signs of trouble AND looking out for Sgt. Wesel, who they have a sneaking suspicions is not exactly a law-abiding officer.
Sgt. Wesel is connecting with his 2 hit-men I mentioned in my DA!Elsa in the shower fic outline, and networking with other shady characters (Maybe Judge Claude Frollo? Because they both “longed / To purge the world  / Of vice and sin / And [they] saw corruption everywhere / Except within”. In short, Frollo could be a crooked judge taking kickbacks from Wesel).
Hans is there. The author can decide why. In my linked fic outline, I suggested Wesel was made aware of Hans’ cruel nature and took him in to join the force as one more crooked cop to act as his eyes & ears. There would be friction between Hans & Kristoff, not only because Kristoff knows Hans can’t be trusted but cannot say anything to his superior, but also their shared connection with Anna. If we’re merging fics, I assume he joined a little while after his midnight talk with Elsa, thinking to get some cop training just to be on the safe side (not that he really expects anything, but Elsa was acting unusual that night... Or, more unusual than normal), but before “interviewing” Anna with The Weasel (as per @hathor-frozen’s fics). Regardless, whether he’s a cop or not, Hans would be doing his own criminal networking.
Anna is primarily out for a good time. She sees Hans, and while she still feels anger towards him, she can’t resist an opportunity to rub it in his face (hence the amount of leg displayed) that she’s having a complete blast without him in her life. She hopes to use the fan, or at least do a fancy display/trick/thing with the blades. Hans, having been rejected many-a-time lately based on accusations (They’re rumors, he protests, And unfounded ones at that!) that have somehow followed him since Senior High School Year that he ditched Anna at Prom, is beside himself with fury.
D* is there, but since no one else outside the Arendelles. Tadashi and Kristoff know what he looks like, he’s perfectly safe. He’s mainly to extract Anna if things go really wrong.
I think the stage is set. Given how detailed this is, perhaps a multi-part fic would best be able to cover it?
* For some reason, I always think of D as looking & sounding like Cobra Bubbles. Anyone else get that feeling? Wasn’t that in a DA!fic, or am I mixing up the Supergirl/Lilo & Stitch cross-over by @comickergirl? *shrug* Well, here’s (yet) another prompt to work with.

BH6 Snippets - 2/15/2023
More work on that Ghost’s Fury sequel--finished up a chunk that links up with a bit I’ve already written, so yay! :D
Anywho, have some dialogue between Gogo and Tadashi:
“Can I talk to you?”
“I mean sure,” Tadashi said, glancing at her with ear flaps up.  “What is it?”
“You follow me,” she said, walking back out of the cave.  Tadashi looked bemused, followed her out and up into the air.
“So what is it, some big secret?  No wait, you finally found someone you’re interested in and you don’t want it getting around,” he teased.
“Hush before I smack you,” she told him.  “No, I was wondering what the holdup was on the whole saddle thing.”
Tadashi groaned.  “Don’t YOU start.”
“It’s a legitimate question—you’re wasting time better spent doing other things.”
“And what if he stabs me mid-flight?”
“Yokai can’t fly, so that would make him an idiot.”  Glance at him.  “So, what’s taking so long?”
Tadashi huffed.  “It’s the principle of it.”
“So you’re just being daft about it.”
“It’s the principle of it,” Tadashi repeated.  “It’s—I know better, dragons won’t just magically follow a Yokai because I carted him around on my back, but—it’s his attitude, Swift-Strike.  Like—like this is some big challenge and if he can just beat me he can get it.”
“So it’s a matter of pride, not principle.”
“Yes.  No.  It’s complicated.”
She huffed.  “Sure it is.  Have you eaten yet, or were you too busy feeding everyone else?”
“I could use some fish,” he admitted—squinted at her.  “Maybe a race too?  It’s been a while.”
Huff.  “You’re on.”
At the very least, it was a suitable distraction.
Gogo is a Nadder and Tadashi is a Night Fury in this, the dragon bristling with sharp launching spines seemed appropriate for her.

BH6 Snippets - 2/10/2023
After finishing up that time-travelling Obake AU late last night, did some work on the Ghost’s Fury sequel--got one goal down, now for the next one!
Carl found him in the forge about an hour later.
“I saw Tadashi on the roof,” he said.  “I was hoping he had brought you back with him.”
“Unfortunately,” Obake said, striking the metal one last time before looking at Carl.
“Fine,” he said, startling the larger man.  “I will give this idiocy the fair shake you’ve been wanting. But if I do, then we do it my way. No idiocy, no little coups, no bothering me with the minutiae.  That is your job, understood?”
“Done,” Carl said, nodding.
Obake eyed him.  “Momakase already talked to you, didn’t she.”
“I woke up with her sitting crosslegged on my chest,” Carl confirmed.  “I was not expecting that.”
Momakase: I do not have time for pleasantries nor for waiting for you to wake up.
Also this is the BH6/HTTYD crossover so Tadashi’s sitting on the roof because of being a dragon and not from being a teen with questionable sense.

Writing Snippets--10/26/2022
Oh gosh we’re getting a break from the time-travelling Obake AU I wrote four pages on something else last night. :O
Anywho--remember Ghost’s Fury, that one where Hiro and Tadashi are Night Furies?  Yeah got some progress done on that one. :D
“You’re supposed to be giving this a fair shake, Older-Brother,” Hiro pointed out.
“Well gee, all things considered I’d think me even being here counts, don’t you?” Tadashi asked. “Like, it wouldn’t be THAT hard to grab you and tell everybody ‘hey it was fun but we’re leaving now.’”
“Yes it would, there’s a lot of dragons who have started training Yokai.  You can’t ask them to leave them behind, it’d be mean.”
Tadashi huffed and grumbled at that, looking uncomfortable enough that Hiro felt kind of bad for hitting him there.  yes, technically as alpha he could force the flight to do as he wanted…except he didn’t want to be that kind of alpha.  He wanted to be the kind that listened to his flight and made decisions based on that, and at this point a good chunk of the flight was starting to swing towards Hiro’s opinions.  They liked the idea of an exotic pet that was also low-maintenance; that they were also highly deadly was just a bonus for some dragons, a little bit of extra danger to add some fire to the whole thing.
Tadashi, however…yeah Tadashi had basically lived through his worst nightmare of something bad happening to Hiro and yes Hiro was aware of the fact that asking him to play nice-nice with the same Yokai that shot him down (and they couldn’t even lie about it, Obake was the only one with that skull-face) was asking a lot.  Really going to have to work on considering all the angles here…maybe he’d ask Baymax for some help with all the noodley bits regarding the touchy-feely stuff like emotions and expectations and stuff.
The gang’s POV is basically How to Train Your Dragon but with Dragons doing the training.  It makes for some interesting writing.

Writing Snippets--10/29/2022
Happy Mischief Night!  Got today and tomorrow and then I can go back to my usual writing schedule success.
Anywho, more from that Ghost’s Fury sequel we’re up to fifteen consecutive chapters so yay!
For context, Tadashi is a Night Fury and Fred is a Monstrous Nightmare in this:
“My dude that was AWESOME!” Fred exclaimed, arching his neck down to look at a terrified Obake. “Did you mean to do that?”
“Sorry, Fred, my fault,” Tadashi said, winging over.  “Mind giving him back before Hiro gives me grief for flinging his Yokai?”
“My dude, you definitely shouldn’t be flinging him around like that I don’t think he liked it,” Fred counseled.  "I mean look at him he's shaking—oh wait sorry my dude that’s probably not comfortable hold on.”  Pinched Obake’s leg in his mouth before letting go and swinging him up to his back. “See?  Much more comfortable fewer claws and by the way dude no stabbing or biting and maybe don’t roll off the wings okay that does not spark joy.”
Obake didn’t respond, Obake seemed much too preoccupied with clinging on for dear life.  Or maybe trying to strangle Fred, that was an option. Fred didn’t seem to notice, though.
“Aw, he’s cute!” Fred said—looked at Tadashi.  “So how is this whole thing going besides the accidental yeeting I’ve been wanting to do this with Dibs but you’re taking FOREVER about it are you still working out all the kinks?”
Okay Tadashi needed a moment.  “Who’s Dibs?”
“My Yokai, my dude—got him all picked out, really digging his personality, definitely has the right amount of enthusiasm for this, our epic merging of flights.  Got a canto about our growing relationship, want to hear?”
“Uhhh maybe later.”
Fred, in lieu of comics, instead memorizes epic sagas and recounts his and his friends’ epic tales of awesomeness in cantos.  Obake, meanwhile, probably has opinions about being flipped around like he’s nothing.

BH6 Snippets--2/9/2023
Got a ton of work done on that Ghost’s Fury sequel, so have an exchange from that based on the sunset tonight:
Obake spotted Momakase sitting on the roof with Gogo, watching the sunset—looked over at Tadashi, waved and pointed at the roof.  Tadashi looked, looked at him—
Was up on the roof moments later, Obake slipping off him to sit next to her.
“Am I allowed to tell you why they turn those colors?” he asked.
“Not yet,” she said, lounging against Gogo’s side.  “Is that why you came up here?”
“I needed something else to think about.”
She made a short noise at that.  “I guess asking you not to think is a losing battle.”
“I have an unquiet mind.”
“Bet it makes sleeping difficult.”
“I have to work until I drop, yes.”
“No wonder you look so rough all the time.”
Huff, look back at the sunset…look back at her, made a snap decision.  “Come on.”
“Do what?” she asked, blinking as he got back on Tadashi. “Where are you going?”
“You’ll just have to follow and find out, won’t you?” he asked, Tadashi spreading his wings and lofting into the air.
Tadashi and Gogo are a Night Fury and Deadly Nadder, respectively.  Also dialogue is fun. :D
