BACKSTORY

Tatiana Primrose Somerset was born on the 20th of April, 1956 by Lawrence and Millicent Somerset, and grew up in luxury, though she wasn’t thrilled about the lifestyle. She soon began dressing and acting tomboy, and was thus sorted into Gryffindor, something that didn’t happen since her great-grandfather Malcolm Stolberg-Burke. 

At the age of 26, she fell in love with Olga Renaux and striked a relationship with her. When she told her brother, he wasn’t as thrilled as she thought, and when he gave her the ultimatum and reason of why, she felt trapped, not making her own mind up until three months, when she tearfully gave Olga up and lived for decades rejecting everyone and being always angry, becoming a heart-breaker and rebelling. 

When she was 66, she decided that she didn’t want to die alone, and thus she located Olga and travelled to Montpellier, where they spent three wonderful months before she proposed and they married there. Her grand-niece had no option but to disown her. She’s currently alive and living in Montpellier with Olga. 

MISC

She was the first female Somerset to attend university, getting three degrees: law, political sciences and sports.

What was Vera Gedroitz like? I have heard that she was “mean” or have heard her been talked about in a negative way, but honestly she is someone to look up to. Hi! Thank you so much for the question - sorry for the delay! I do love talking about Vera, so here we go...

Vera's personality

Vera was known to be gruff and commanding. Unfortunately, little is written directly about Vera's personality, as much of the primary sources focusses on her "unusualness" instead: her way of dressing (always masculine clothing), speaking in a low, gruff voice gravelled by years of cigarette smoke, and her relative openness about her sexuality. However, there was a warmer, more romantic side to Vera. She wrote poetry, sought the companionship of literary circles, and turned the grief of losing her brother during childhood into a truly revolutionary medical career. She could be brusque and private, possessing a no-nonsense attitude, but also incredibly compassionate and kind. She spent the last years of her life running a pharmacy with her wife, giving medicine and medical aid to the poor completely for free.

Was she liked by OTMA?

We can infer that she was, indeed, liked by OTMA, or at least by Nicholas and Alexandra. As a doctor to the royal household (who was specifically requested by Alexandra) she would have been held in high esteem. It is believed that Vera was also an occasional doctor to the imperial children: Nicholas and Alexandra's tendency to dismiss staff which they saw as behaving immorally, or being difficult in some way (especially when it came to those caring for their children) implies that they had warm feelings towards Vera due to her continued employment.

In fact, fellow nurse Valentina Chebotareva's diaries are very revealing of this relationship: when Anna Vyrubova was struck by a train, she noted in her diary that the Tsar "spoke for a long time" with Vera, entrusting her with Anna's care. She also wrote in 1917 that "I talked to Vera Ignatievna about the past. How close the Empress had been to her at the beginning of the war", implying that their relationship did decrease as Rasputin's influence monopolised. Vera had no time for Rasputin - one quite famous anecdote describes him standing in her way and Vera physically pushing him into a corridor to be rid of him lol. Despite this strain on her relationship with the Romanovs, and her activity in revolutionary groups during her youth, Vera remained fond of the family. She had, after all, taught Alexandra, Olga, and Tatiana personally during their nursing training. When the abdication was announced, Valentina wrote that Vera "sobbed like a helpless child."

It is from Tatiana's diaries where we learn the most about the sister's relationship with Vera. Ever detail-oriented, Tatiana's diaries are a beautiful patchwork of notes and observations about her patients and fellow workers. Interestingly, in her 1914 diary, Tatiana usually refers to Vera as "The Princess", reference to her royal title, rather than by her name in line with the doctor/tutor role that she had with the Grand Duchesses. This later changes to her first name and patronymic.

Monday 8 September 1914: "...Had tea with Papa and Mama, then the princess came over."

Wednesday 24 September 1914: "...From there to the infirmary with the princess... Had a lesson. The Princess was here."

Thursday 25 September 1914: "Had a lesson in the morning. At 11 o’clock again, like yesterday, we picked up the princess and went to the infirmary."

Letter from Tatiana to Nicholas II, 19 November 1914: "They took out a tiny fragment from Gogoberidze’s leg, but it was so small that the Princess was looking for it for almost a half hour and finally found it with difficulty. It was about this big “O,” no bigger."

Letter from Tatiana to Vera Cheborateva, 14 April 1917: "And where do Rita, ... and Vera Ign. live now?"

Letter from Tatiana to Vera Cheborateva, 8 January 1917: "We heard what Vera Ignatievna has turned into, and how she is walking around. How fast people change— it is even funny!"

Letter from Tatiana to Rita Khitrovo, 23 January 1918: "[The Baron] also wrote to me and said that he saw Vera Ignatievna at the infirmary. She is [wearing] epaulets, large boots with spurs, did not even ask the Baron how he was doing. So shameful. I did not expect how fast she would change. Although lately she had been very strange."

It is interesting here that Tatiana remarks about Vera's clothing - many photographs show that Vera had always dressed in the masculine style around the infirmary (suits, long coats, even masculine medical outfits), including in the presence of the Romanov family, so this would not have been a new or unusual phenomenon for the Grand Duchesses. Vera even sent this photograph of herself to Olga in 1915 - wearing a masculine style! She was not subtle.

(That's one happy patient!) ... From these photos and documents you can clearly see that Alexandra, Olga, and Tatiana were very happy working alongside Vera who clearly more traditionally masculine clothing - I've pointed out Vera for ease of identification.

Perhaps Tatiana was pointing out this social irregularity in light of what she saw as a betrayal: I think it's very important to highlight the difference in their diaries before and after the Revolution. Vera stayed in the capital for a brief time, and could not openly support the Romanov family without compromising her work as a doctor. Eventually, she joined the 6th Siberian Rifle Regiment (which was still technically considered imperial) in order to provide surgery on the front lines which simultaneously escaping the capital. Valentina Chebatoreva's diaries make it very clear that Vera did not keep up correspondence with and/or show support for the Romanovs as it would have compromised her medical work: "Vera Ignatievna finds that it is impossible to answer each one [letter] so as not to give the impression of a "party"." I'm of the opinion that Tatiana's souring opinion towards Vera came from her mistaking Vera's self-preservation of herself and her work through not showing active support or maintaining correspondence to have been a betrayal.

Vera's whole life was medicine: she emigrated to Russia to study medicine, she became the first Russian woman doctor, she served in the Russo-Japanese War, First World War, and Revolutionary conflicts, she found her life partner Maria Dmitrievna through medicine, and even in retirement worked tirelessly to deliver healthcare and treatment to those less fortunate than her. It appears to Vera that, in order to continue to save lives, correspondence with the Romanovs was too much of a risk.

Did the little pair know her?

This is a great question! Off the top of my head, I can't recall any direct references to Vera in their diaries. Unlike Olga and Tatiana's diaries, the little pair's letters and diaries aren't available to read and search online, so I'm having to rely on my memory of reading those books unlike the ability to digitally search the big pair's for any mentions of Vera.

If we look through their albums however, we can see multiple photographs of Maria and Anastasia visiting Olga and Tatiana's infirmary and being photographed with the staff: including Vera. There are also photographs of Olga and Tatiana with Vera in the little pair's albums, implying that they took the photos. They may not have known her as well as Olga and Tatiana, but considering their visits to the big pair's hospital and Vera's visits to the palace, she was definitely an acquaintance.

To conclude: Vera definitely wasn't to everyone's taste, especially those who preferred the image of a conservative, reserved woman. She was authoritative and determined - brilliant qualities for a doctor, though not encouraged within noble women. The Romanovs, during their friendship with her, truly appear to not have cared about her sexuality of her preference for masculine fashion (there are some gender historians who would have a much more nuanced take on this) - it was only after the Revolution, and her perceived turning against them, that these qualities were problematised. Vera was different, brilliantly so. She fought for what she wanted, what she needed. And, despite the definite constraints of the time, she was free.

Another country with a surrogacy scandal. This time it's the surrogate mothers that are getting jail time.

Four Russian fertility clinic employees and two surrogate mothers have been handed jail sentences of varying lengths as part of the country's first surrogacy investigation, state media reported Friday.

Authorities launched Russia’s first-ever surrogacy probe in 2020 after one of the babies born to a surrogate mother was found dead in an apartment outside Moscow.

Moscow’s Nikulinsky District Court on Friday found the head of the European Surrogacy Center, Vladislav Melnikov, guilty of child trafficking and sentenced him to 19.5 years in prison, according to the news agency RIA Novosti.

Two European Surrogacy Center doctors — embryologist Taras Ashitkov and reproductive endocrinologist Yuliana Ivanova — were sentenced to 17.5 years and 16.5 years in prison respectively on the same charges.

Obstetrician-gynecologist Lilya Panaioti received a sentence of 16 years and three months in prison.

Surrogate mothers Tatiana Blinova and Liliya Valeyeva were sentenced to four years and 10.5 years in prison.

Prosecutors had requested up to 20 years of imprisonment for the defendants. The case was reportedly heard behind closed doors for an undisclosed reason.

Melnikov and Panaioti called the trafficking charges against them “lawless and absurd,” saying it is impossible to sell the children to their own parents, according to RIA Novosti.

A seventh defendant, Konstantin Svitnev, who is the CEO of Russia’s first company to arrange surrogacy programs Rosyurconsulting, was put on a wanted list after fleeing the country.

His associate Roman Yemashev, interpreter Kirill Anisimov and courier Valentina Chernsyshova received prison sentences of 5-6 years after taking a plea deal with investigators. 

Russia is one of a handful of countries where commercial surrogacy is legal.

Lawmakers moved to ban surrogacy for non-Russian couples last year following increasing warnings that wealthy foreigners were exploiting Russian women and children.

President Vladimir Putin signed a law banning foreigners from having children with the help of a surrogate in Russia in December 2022.

Can you rank the parents of shatter me series? From best to worst. Please?

This is such a fun question. Let's go!

✨Best to Worst.✨ I'll only list the parents who have made an appearance. Lena might have a Dad, but we don't know that, so let's keep it simple. And this is just my opinion, feel free to pitch in your two cents if you have stuff to add or dispute.

(This got quite long, so I'll add a keep reading.)

I think the best parent of the Supremes is Castillo. (Nicolás and Valentina's father). We know barely anything about this man except that ✨he's from Argentina.✨ However, the reason I'm putting him on top is because Valentina is trans and considering how good of a transition she seem to have, he's definitely supportive. If he didn't like her being trans he probably could have wiped her brain over and over, erasing her identity; but he didn't! Gold star!

Next up is Omondi. (Stephan's father.) He's just here. We don't know anything about him. I guess he sent Stephan to England to receive an education, which is really weird because there are plenty of options in Africa that would also result in an English accent. (cough, Mafi why did you even have to do that??, cough). Thanks for coming Omondi. This is the point where we descend into the bad parents.

Third is Tatiana Mishkina. (Lena's mother.) Abuse-wise, she doesn't seem that bad. Lena has a scar on her leg, but we don't know where she got it. We don't hear anything about Lena's home life except that Tatiana and Anderson wanted Warner and Lena to get together. When they broke up I assumed she got upset because Lena was upset. The reason she's third is because she allows her daughter to be openly transphobic and that's not cool. You'd think she'd try to stay on good terms with Castillo, but she doesn't seem to care.

Now here's the thing. I was pending between putting Max and Muza third worst. Because in a way, Max revoked his parental rights as soon as Ella was sent away. After that his daughters became experiments. I don't think he sees himself as a parent anymore. Emma and Ella become tools for Evie, and he's there to support Evie. Muza on the other hand, is still actively raising his children, and that's almost worse in my mind. Like, if you're going to call yourself a parent, you need to step up. You have all the resources of Asia at your disposal, how is your son suicidal?! In the end I decide that Muza is better, because he at least cares for the (physical, not emotional) well-being of his children. He wants Nazeera and Haider to be returned safely to him. (Surely to wipe their minds afterward, but it's for their own good you know.) Then he shoots Nazeera's plane out of the sky, but you know she can fly so she was fine...! 😄

Max. I don't care if she killed your wife, you don't offer to pimp out your daughter, MAX.

Second to worst is Paris Anderson. I had to keep reminding myself that my fanfics aren't real. That, in canon, he was ready to drop a bomb on James, he beat the crap out of Adam as a child and he did, and does, all kinds of things to Warner. However, in a strange way, he believes what he's doing is what's best for Warner. He wants him to become a strong, ruthless leader that will rule the world once he steps down. He wants to see Warner have a life, succeed, and goes quite the lengths to assure his survival; unlike our last point on this list.

✨Evie Sommers. ✨ She created a pair of daughters for the sole purpose of using them to take over the world. They are tools to her, and they're not permitted to have control over their own lives. She turned Emma into a jellyfish. She let approved the plan of letting Anderson lock up Ella into an asylum. Then she tortured her. She even let them have a normal life beforehand, with pancakes, bikes and strawberry picking, which is almost worse imo! If you're going to do science on your kids, do it the Stranger Things way.

Beautiful as she was smart, Millicent was from a minor pureblood family, and was the perfect post-war lady. She charmed everyone in Winbourne and Lawrence Somerset was soon in love with her, proposing after the war was over. They married and had three children: Charles, Tatiana Primrose and Meghan. 

Father: Lawrence Noah Somerset 

Grandson of the magnificent Primrose Gray and thus the future viscount, he was a rather typical and stoic man of the era, reserved and dutiful. He fell in love with Millicent Abbott and married her as soon as the war was over. He was happy to be in his grandmother’s shadow and assist his aging father, Vincent, until he retired in 1969, a year after Primrose’s death. That year, Charles would meet the love of his life.

Charles had grown up admiring his great-grandmother, possibly the most powerful woman in the entire history of the family. She died when Charles was fifteen, and left him the right to claim the viscountcy when he was of age, a large sum of money and her blessing to marry outside the peerage and pureblood families, seeing its fall and decadence. Thanks to this, he was able to marry a woman that not everyone approved of... 

Tatiana Primrose Somerset (sister) 

A tomboy since infancy, Charles and Tatiana are closer in age and he relates to her easily. He is the first one to know that she is a lesbian and he accepts her. However, when he discovers who her girlfriend truly is, he has no option save exile her from Winbourne to avoid further scandal... 

Meghan Marie Somerset (youngest sister) 

The baby of the family, she grew up sheltered from the scandals and oingoings of Winbourne, for she was a bit innocent and clueless. She never once knew of anything that would break that sweet innocence. She married young, in 1972, to the Ollivander family. She found out too little too late of all that her siblings and parents hid from her.

Significant Other: Ismene Halime Somerset 

Ismene was not certainly impressive as a wife of a future viscount: she spoke little of the language, she was estranged with her family, was a foreigner of a country that they weren’t friendly with and was Muslim... but the moment Charles saw Ismene in the streets as he headed out to the pub, he fell for her beauty and sweet demeanour. And when she talked, he knew he wanted her. For months, they went on dates and he declared his love for her in New Year’s Eve. Two months later, he brought her home and declared that this was the woman he’d marry and become his viscountess. 

His mother was reluctant, and interrogated her, to find out that the girl was too innocent to try catch his fortune. She approved of her and soon took her under her wing, training her to become her worthy successor, and while she was shy and reserved, she had a talent of swaying the press and modernised further Winbourne, cleaning its image completely and being a much closer mother to their daughter, Valentina, who was born in 1973. Their close relationship made the public fall in love with the successor of Viscountess Millicent. 

In 1997, Viscountess Millicent had a car accident, in which she was killed by a drunk truck driver and Charles was devastated. He soon hunted down the man, who died under suspicious circumstances... meaning he had someone give him a letal poison that seemed like a rare illness. Ismene soon found out and confronted Charles, telling him that jail was punishment enough, in which Charles replied “Murderers don’t get to live to tell the tale.” This caused a fight between them, and were apart for most of the year, until February 12th of 1998, their granddaughters were born. They decided to try make their marriage work for the girls’ sake, and helping Valentina and her husband raise them mended their relationship. 

In 2010, Lawrence Somerset passed away and Charles officially became viscount, with Ismene by his side. They were now quite old, but very much experienced and devoted themselves to train Valentina and Diana. Ismene preferred to spoil rotten her youngest, Beatrice ( @camillejeaneshphm​ ) and let her know that she was loved despite all the attention going normally to Diana. 

In 2016, Diana was caught in a scandal with a relative of the Alderly family, and Ismene once again saved and cleaned their image while Diana healed. By 2018, Charles and Ismene were old and tired, and decided to give the ropes to Diana, who had just turned 20. She remains viscountess to this day and has not married yet, and Charles understands why his daughter wouldn’t make a choice yet. By the time she is 30, she decides to finally pursue a marriage for Winbourne’s sake and leave the matter behind. 

Ismene and Charles are still alive and happily living in their house in Madeira, in which they are redecorating with their own money.

Overall personality: Quiet, a tad rebellious, he is a hopeless romantic and someone who is usually charismatic and loves talking to people, like his mother. He is loyal to the end and has inhereted his great-grandfather’s sense of humour.

BACKSTORY

Charles grew up into the last years of the golden era of Winbourne, and has few but fond memories of his great-grandmother, Primrose Gray. When it was announced that there was no need for him to marry someone of status or wealth, he was relieved. He grew up with two sisters, Tatiana and Meghan, and in 1969, his grandfather Vincent retired as viscount, leaving room for Lawrence, and Charles then became Lord Somerset. Days later, he stumbled upon a beautiful woman who spoke little of English and had a shy and sweet demeanour. Her name? Ismene Fazilet.

Charles is an avid horse rider and has a horse, descendant of Primrose’s horse, named Thunder, for he is a tempestuous mare that only Charles can ride 

He also was instructed in music and enjoys playing the flute and knows of several court dances, though, like his great-grandfather, he is not the best dancer... 

Charles is a reserved guy and was the first one not to have a lifestyle open to the public

Además de esto , John Williams es el compositor de las tres primeras películas y creador del tema principal de Hedwig, la música de las películas de Harry Potter se grabó y estrenó al mismo tiempo que se vendían al público las ocho películas correspondientes.

A nosotras en particular nos parece un trabajo muy bien echo por parte de Hedwing, su música ayuda a que el espectador de la película pueda tener una experiencia más completa, ya que permite a este sentirse dentro de la película y ser uno de los personajes, sin duda un trabajo admirable
