Alopecia post incoming: this NYT piece is insane. As in, I am immediately commencing treatment after having sworn off medical therapies for almost three years.
I've been slowly losing my hair for a decade due to alopecia and CTE, very likely triggered by starting/stopping birth control in my early twenties, and during the pandemic it got precipitously worse and I finally had to capitulate and start wearing wigs. NB: best thing I ever did. I tell every woman I meet who's begun to notice excessive shedding and/or hair loss that treatments to regrow hair are either barely effective/only useful for slowing progression (e.g. topical Minoxidil, spiro, finasteride) or total horseshit snake oil. Skip the heartache and the pain and financial drain. I have tried it all; I have had my own blood centrifuged and injected into my scalp with 30-40 needles for several sessions and for thousands of dollars. It was not fun. It worked for about a year, and then I got food poisoning, and I lost even more hair than the PRP had regrown. Even transplants usually wind up being a temporary solution. The only cure for hair loss is wearing alternative hair.
BUT, as per that Times article, dermatologists have begun to notice that off-label use of low dose oral Minoxidil (literally just Rogaine in pill form, where bioavailability is superior) can induce miraculous regrowth. It's dirt cheap, low risk, and if you are in the beginning or middle stages of hair loss you have nothing to lose by trying it. The only downsides are that if it proves effective, you will have to continue taking it for the rest of your life, and you may experience additional body or facial hair growth that you can just shave/wax/tweeze/laser away if unwanted. Big Fucking Deal.

Also my hair is falling out. No matter what I try it won’t stop falling out. It’s all over everything. I’ve been working so hard to grow it out again after seven years of having to shave it and now it’s falling out. I JUST WANT TO BE NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-🍀
Hi 🍀,
I'm so sorry this is happening. I know my experience is definitely different, but I remember when my hair fell out, it was such a huge blow to my self-image and confidence. It made me realize how having hair is another beauty standard we are force-fed. It's hard, if not impossible, to feel normal or beautiful when we lose our hair, because sometimes it's such a central part of our identity that we take for granted.
I understand wanting to feel normal and inconspicuous. But perhaps consider the true worth in cohering to our societal idea of normalcy. In other words, consider focusing more on doing what you need and want to do and less on how others expect you to be, you know? It might be hard to come to terms with, but it's okay to not have hair. There are plenty of people out there without hair on their head, and they create a new normal with that community. That's okay. Again, it's definitely not easy, but I don't think you deserve to feel necessarily bad about losing your hair. You deserve love and acceptance, even from yourself, you know? I hope that doesn't sound too assertive or overbearing, so I apologize if it was.

I made an Alopecia discord
Hello all!
I made a community for people with alopecia (of all kinds) to get together, get support, talk about living with the disease, share memes, and other things like that. Hair loss can be hard sometimes, who says we have to cope or live with it alone?
If you wish to join please interact with this post (so more people will see it because tumblr’s algorythem does not seem to like me lol) and click the link below. I am also open to suggestions for server improvements to make it both a more welcoming/easier to use place.
Here is the link for those who wish to join.

Colophotherium grimmorum
Colophotherium is one of the many descendants of cattle present worldwide 35 million years in the future. This species can be found in colder wooded habitats in northern Eurasia. Coat density changes with the seasons, allowing Colophotherium to inhabit the same regions year-round. The head bears an inflatable resonating chamber, similar to that present in saiga. Herds will communicate over large distances with amplified calls, and in fights, it is usually the one with the louder moo that wins.
The diet of Colophotherium consists of grass, leaves, and bark. As an individual grows, the horns are first used to scrape bark off of trees; at a certain age, the incisors and mouth musculature will be robust enough to remove bark on its own. The large horns present on the heads of adults are often used to fell trees, so that an individual can feast on leaves present higher up. The molars are honed to handle rough and hard-to-chew foodstuffs, and the extensive ruminant stomach can easily digest a day's worth of bark.

A woman's body undergoes numerous changes during pregnancy due to a fluctuating hormonal landscape, which may impact hair health. While some women experience thicker and more lustrous hair, others might notice hair thinning or shedding. Hair loss is not typically heralded as a hallmark sign of pregnancy, contrary to other more definitive symptoms such as missed periods or nausea. However, it's important to understand that hormonal changes can affect each woman differently, and hair loss could be an indirect result. Turkeys and Telogen Effluvium.
Just a quick dream from when I went back to sleep for an hour this morning.
I went downstairs to get coffee, but I caught my reflection and noticed that the hair on the right side of my head had completely fallen out. Naturally, I was getting upset, and I reached up to my head, and still, clump after clump was coming out.
I ran back up to my room. When I got there, I looked in the mirror and saw that it wasn't as bad as I had originally thought. I looked out the window and saw a bird. I got my phone out to take pictures to show my family, and when I looked back, it was two turkeys. They were just hanging out on my neighbor's roof. I took a couple of pictures to share, and then I woke up.
I'm not really sure what the turkeys means, but my hair is falling out in real life due to stress (verified by my gp and a dermatologist as telogen effluvium, exacerbated by severe chronic stress).
