Every summer in the desert it's like the desert has a fever and everybody waits for the fever to break (monsoon) and the longer it takes the more the tension rises in everybody and the hotter everything gets and the more miserable everybody is -- so bad that even people visiting can feel it and ask what's wrong
And the ones who lives here full time spit out lines like "it's a dry heat haha" and squint through the air that burns your eyeballs and the skin of your face even when you're not in direct sunlight
There's more violence and accidents and road rage incidents and pets getting lost and you wonder is this the year the fever never breaks
And then the first haboob comes rolling in looking like something out of a horror movie and blankets everything in sandy dirt but it brings a storm and rain and clouds and it's terrible because there's residual heat left in everything for days even after the clouds come
And it's wet and hot and awful and the tension is bleeding away but still there
You wait because you've been fooled before by clouds that only bring a few minutes of sprinkles and this year it happened three times before the real monsoon started
And when it kept raining and the clouds stayed for three days and the heat finally finally finally backed off to the point where pool decking meant to stay cool "no matter how hot it is outside" doesn't burn your feet today and you finally take a breath
The pools are still so hot it feels like bathwater and it's not even refreshing but it's okay because the monsoon has started and everybody can breathe again
It'll get hot again and it'll still be horrible but the fever broke and everybody can feel it

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau put forward a new regulation to limit bank overdraft fees. The CFPB pointed out that the average overdraft fee is $35 even though majority of overdrafts are under $26 and paid back with-in 3 days. The new regulation will push overdraft fees down to as little as $3 and not more than $14, saving the American public collectively 3.5 billion dollars a year.
The Environmental Protection Agency put forward a regulation to fine oil and gas companies for emitting methane. Methane is the second most abundant greenhouse gas, after CO2 and is responsible for 30% of the rise of global temperatures. This represents the first time the federal government has taxed a greenhouse gas. The EPA believes this rule will help reduce methane emissions by 80%
The Energy Department has awarded $104 million in grants to support clean energy projects at federal buildings, including solar panels at the Pentagon. The federal government is the biggest consumer of energy in the nation. The project is part Biden's goal of reducing the federal government's greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030. The Energy Department estimates it'll save taxpayers $29 million in the first year alone and will have the same impact on emissions as taking over 23,000 gas powered cars off the road.
The Education Department has cancelled 5 billion more dollars of student loan debt. This will effect 74,000 more borrowers, this brings the total number of people who've had their student loan debt forgiven under Biden through different programs to 3.7 Million
U.S. Agency for International Development has launched a program to combat lead exposure in developing countries like South Africa and India. Lead kills 1.6 million people every year, more than malaria and AIDS put together.
Congressional Democrats have reached a deal with their Republican counter parts to revive the expanded the Child Tax Credit. The bill will benefit 16 million children in its first year and is expected to lift 400,000 children out of poverty in its first year. The proposed deal also has a housing provision that could see 200,000 new affordable rental units

A carbon offset deal could see Liberia concede 10 percent of its territory to a private Emirati company, extinguishing customary land rights and giving the United Arab Emirates (UAE) pollution rights equivalent to the forest’s carbon sequestration. The deal would give the company blanket control over one million hectares of forest. The company would then “harvest” carbon credits, supposedly from restoring and protecting the land, which they would then sell onto major polluters to offset their emissions. If signed, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) would violate a number of Liberian laws, including the 2019 land rights law, a legislation that asserts communities’ right to “customary land”. It would also concede near total control of one of the most densely forested territories in Africa to the Dubai-based firm Blue Carbon for a period of 30 years. Additionally, the deal would prevent Liberia from using the land to meet its own international climate targets.
Liberia emitted 0.24 tons of CO2 per capita in 2019; UAE emitted 20.5 tons, or 85 times more than Liberia.

just a little update for those who have dmed me about it: i am doing well, thankfully i live in a pretty high place (literally atop of a hill) and the flood won't get here unless the whole city is completely underwater, which it hopefully won't happen. my family offered our house to our relatives who had to be evacuated and we are awaiting news about other relatives who are stranded in a nearby town. tomorrow i'm volunteering at the shelters i have access to and i'll buy essential items to bring to them along with my uni colleagues.
i am very thankful for all the reblogs, notes and donations. spreading awareness of climate issues is absolutely essential and we need to act on it in any way we can. a step forward is a step forward, however small :)
again, thank you so so much for all the kindness and compassion. heaven knows we need it now more than ever.

Do you have a tag specifically for stuff about the climate crisis/what is being done/can be done to help stop or reverse its effects?
Basically just read a post that was "I'm not trying to be alarmist but- *spends seven paragraphs about how climate change is inevitable, we will never possibly recover from it, it's not global warming anymore its global "boiling", none of the damage can ever be undone and we're all going to be dead in the next five generations*" and I'm trying.. very hard not to spiral from it.
Sorry for bothering you 🙏
The "climate crisis" "climate change" and "climate hope" tags should do the trick.
Of those, "climate change" is the one that has the most content by far, just because the others are more narrow and "climate hope" is a much more recent term, so to speak, because I keep forgetting about it lol
I don't post anything that's not good news, so you can go through the general "climate change" tag without fear
Also, while I'm at it, that person is wrong. For a lot of reasons, including that we're actively fixing a lot of damage to ecosystems literally right now. And also also, GLOBAL WARMING WILL BE AT LEAST SOMEWHAT REVERSIBLE
Why? Well, the rise in average global temperatures is caused by excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As we keep fixing the planet, restoring ecosystems, and stop burning fossil fuels, nature will siphon more and more of the carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
And if there's less carbon dioxide (and other greenhouse gasses) in the atmosphere, then more heat can once again escape the planet and radiate out into space
Will this be easy? Probably not! This planet's natural systems are incomprehensibly complicated - but that also means there are solutions out there that we haven't even discovered. There are some additional problems to overcome, like the fact that the oceans will be surfacing excess heat for a few decades after we stop CO2 emissions, and also "natural gas" and "carbon capture" are fake solutions/oil company traps.
But we can do it. I so, so, so sincerely believe that.
One term that I think we'll be seeing more and more of in the coming years is "Drawdown": "Climate drawdown refers to the future point in time when levels of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere stop climbing and start to steadily decline.[1] Drawdown is a milestone in reversing climate change and eventually reducing global average temperatures." (from wikipedia)
We can achieve drawdown. Will life in the future look very different? Yes, in both good and bad ways.
Climate change is the earth's "feedback" to humanity: "Fix your shit or die."
People are, in general, really, really, really committed to finding ways not to die.
I genuinely believe the rest of us can overcome the few dozen billionaires trying to screw the rest of us over. Money is powerful, but the remaining 7 billion plus people on this planet are more so. And the fortunes of billlionaires are made off the backs of the rest of us - which means we can make those fortunes run dry.
Sources for this answer (warning, these talk about the negative side of things a lot too, they're not the uplifting reads themselves. that's next): x, x, x, x, x, x, x, x
Other sources to read for hope: FutureCrunch, Project Drawdown and Project Regeneration good news websites in general such as Positive News and Goodgoodgood, which I think are the best content fits for what you're looking for. Make sure to check out Goodgoodgood's roundups specifically. And know that there are way, way more good news stories - and way bigger ones, too - than I've had time to post about lately, because work has been really hectic

Introducing Myself (Leaving a Decade of Anonymous TumblrLife!)
Hi I’m Robin 👋 I’ve been on tumblr for almost a decade and now I feel like its time for a fresh introduction. This damned creative hellsite has been my anonymous world to explore creative and aesthetic trends for years and now I want to be part of that creativity and buzz. Over the last couple of years, I have suffered from Long Covid and many of its dehabiliating symptoms (Chronic headaches, migraines and fatigue). During that time I rediscovered Tumblr as a refuge for appreciation and relaxation. Adding my favourite new photographers to an ever growing peaceful puddle of artwork. Now I want to start adding my own creative juices to that puddle (uh oh I better leave that metaphor there before tumblr community guidelines gets me!). I’ll be upload my photography and writings - I hope you enjoy them!😌 Your feedback is super welcome! I’m not much of a whizz at photo editting or software but I’ll get there with your help. If you’re interested I’m also one of the cofounders of Extinction Rebellion(XR) and have started writing articles on the climate crisis and civil disobedience. You can check them out here.
My current mission is to inject peaceful art into our chaotic, crumbling world and also help to spark change by making even the driest scholarly articles about civil resistance, community organising and climate breakdown into accesible, fun resources. I'm particularly interested in supporting other young people on this journey. I might even join them on TikTok to do it 😉
Phew that’s the scary introduction over! Feel free to drop me a message anytime if you have questions, feedback or just wanna chat 😊 Peace, Robin ☮️

Sometimes it’s hard to get yourself to care about climate change. Yeah, you want to preserve this earth and all the wonderful places and animals, but it feels so helpless. There’s nothing you can do. It’s out of our hands and you just shut your brain off to forget about the impending doom. So you put on the silly little puppet show and are smacked in the face by the unrelenting force of death and extinction level events, and even in the face of absolute destruction we have to chose to care. We get to chose to love and cherish the people around us. And oh my god the earth is freaking cool. We are so lucky to be here even at the end. And maybe, just maybe, we can save the day, genie or no, and keep this awesome fucking planet with all the people we love.
“Cause there’s no knowing what’s in store, but I’m not worried anymore. I’m with my favorite dinosaurs

#my blog is in his last year of middle school. he'll be off to high school next year (at least I think so..? 13 yrs old is usually 8th grade#at least from my experience. 9th graders are usually 14. 10th are 15. etc. etc. and then you're in 12th grade#and graduate high school usually 17yrs old.) ANYWAY.. wow he is so ancient..#maybe he's still in a preteeny early teen emo phase or something.. I hope he gets some black and white striped armwarmers and black eyeline#r for his birthday. Maybe an MP3 player of course. Though because I don't really like most alternative music and he is my son he's actually#not allowed to listen to metal or pop punk or emo rock whatever stuff. I open the mp3 player and pre-stock it with only#disco and funk and classical music. he can have a little chiptune or techno stuff as a treat (sometimes emo adjacent maybe more#scene. I think a lot of scene kids were into that more.. emo's weird eccentric brother))#Also he starts taking iron pills his 13th birthday because he's probably incredibly anemic just like me#so on and so forth and et cetera (I'm just being silly.. I am not pro-controlling your children down to whatmusic they#listen to or etc.etc. lol)#THOUGH I love that it's in january... january is one of my favorite months if not my favorite. yeeaaay#just such a nice cool month. I like that it's the start of the year mostly and that it's sometimes snowy here. Like where I live nov - dec#isnt really actually snowy?? You always associate those winter Months with snow but I think snow happens later on this coast#so it's more like Jan - March or even april sometimes. Though that may just be climate change lol.. But it's cool that Jan is winter AND#ACTUALLY snowy. plus the Beginning Of Year vibes and energy.. hrm... nice nice.. ANYWAY#AND this is not even my first tumblr blog. I had a different one before it I think..#evviilll to be on one website for so long lol.. Very thankful that most websites I used to use as a 10 year old or whatever#are now defunct. There's something weird about how humans are just creating endless streams of words and pictures and all of this stuff#and it just goes out into the void and stays there long after the person themselves has forgotten it. not even like 'oh no what if i said#something bad!!' but more just the general sense of.. people create so much more ideas than they can actually hold in their heads. nobody#remembers exactly word for word every post they've ever made or etc. It's like parts of yourself that you've externalized and then fade awa#from you but they're still you but they're not so you just have little snapshots of yourself in time floating around entirely unbenknownst#to you. like making clones of yourself and then forgetting you did so but every once in a while going 'shit... there's clones out there..#of me and I don't even have track or awareness of them anymore.. what an odd concept..' etc. not EXACTLY like that ghbj..you know what I me#n.. or maybe you dont.. hrmm... ANYWAY#I am just now slightly recovering from my most recent mysterious illness spell and etc. so I would like to post more again and mAYBE even#do a costume if I'm being ambitious.. but after so many times of being randomly stricken by problems I'm now fearful of ever being too#hopeful lol.. always like 'I would like to go to the grocery store tomorrow! .... MAYBE.. if i CAN.. possibly... NOT getting my hopes up'.#etc. etc. etc. every statement has a caveat and a backup plan and so on and so forth and such is life.. anyway. happy birthday evil tumblr

So my family trained our dog very well to recognise anything flat and on the floor as "bed". It's super helpful for cases where, for example, we're at a friend's place and she's overexcited and we can just point to the entranceway mat and say "go in your bed". It becomes inconvenient when we put something on the ground for other reasons and she just... lies on it lol (I digress).
Anyway, I'm thinking of a whumpee who is used to sleeping on mats (maybe they grew up having to save money on that sort of thing or maybe they have had to flee their home and sleep in makeshift settings for a while) meeting a caretaker who has a penchant for making/buying the fluffiest rugs ever.
After an initial period of trying to understand each other, Caretaker realises that Whumpee knows they can sleep in the bed but they still feel safer on the rugs. And the rugs are fluffy enough that it's causing no harm. Whumpee is just so grateful for how fluffy the rugs are and they do know they can sleep on the bed but also Caretaker understands them.
To be clear, my dog is not neglected. She has far too many beds and also a couch that belongs to her specifically. She just chooses the tiniest rug or the rugless corner for no reason. Well the reason is that she's a lab and she overheats.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #13
April 5-12 2024
President Biden announced the cancellation of a student loan debt for a further 277,000 Americans. This brings the number of a Americans who had their debt canceled by the Biden administration through different means since the Supreme Court struck down Biden's first place in 2023 to 4.3 million and a total of $153 billion of debt canceled so far. Most of these borrowers were a part of the President's SAVE Plan, a debt repayment program with 8 million enrollees, over 4 million of whom don't have to make monthly repayments and are still on the path to debt forgiveness.
President Biden announced a plan that would cancel student loan debt for 4 million borrowers and bring debt relief to 30 million Americans The plan takes steps like making automatic debt forgiveness through the public service forgiveness so qualified borrowers who don't know to apply will have their debts forgiven. The plan will wipe out the interest on the debt of 23 million Americans. President Biden touted how the plan will help black and Latino borrowers the most who carry the heavily debt burdens. The plan is expected to go into effect this fall ahead of the election.
President Biden and Vice-President Harris announced the closing of the so-called gun show loophole. For years people selling guns outside of traditional stores, such as at gun shows and in the 21st century over the internet have not been required to preform a background check to see if buyers are legally allowed to own a fire arm. Now all sellers of guns, even over the internet, are required to be licensed and preform a background check. This is the largest single expansion of the background check system since its creation.
The EPA published the first ever regulations on PFAS, known as forever chemicals, in drinking water. The new rules would reduce PFAS exposure for 100 million people according to the EPA. The Biden Administration announced along side the EPA regulations it would make available $1 billion dollars for state and local water treatment to help test for and filter out PFAS in line with the new rule. This marks the first time since 1996 that the EPA has passed a drinking water rule for new contaminants.
The Department of Commerce announced a deal with microchip giant TSMC to bring billions in investment and manufacturing to Arizona. The US makes only about 10% of the world's microchips and none of the most advanced chips. Under the CHIPS and Science Act the Biden Administration hopes to expand America's high-tech manufacturing so that 20% of advanced chips are made in America. TSMC makes about 90% of the world's advanced chips. The deal which sees a $6.6 billion dollar grant from the US government in exchange for $65 billion worth of investment by TSMC in 3 high tech manufacturing facilities in Arizona, the first of which will open next year. This represents the single largest foreign investment in Arizona's history and will bring thousands of new jobs to the state and boost America's microchip manufacturing.
The EPA finalized rules strengthening clean air standards around chemical plants. The new rule will lower the risk of cancer in communities near chemical plants by 96% and eliminate 6,200 tons of toxic air pollution each year. The rules target two dangerous cancer causing chemicals, ethylene oxide and chloroprene, the rule will reduce emissions of these chemicals by 80%.
the Department of the Interior announced it had beaten the Biden Administration goals when it comes to new clean energy projects. The Department has now permitted more than 25 gigawatts of clean energy projects on public lands, surpass the Administrations goal for 2025 already. These solar, wind, and hydro projects will power 12 million American homes with totally green power. Currently 10 gigawatts of clean energy are currently being generated on public lands, powering more than 5 million homes across the West.
The Department of Transportation announced $830 million to support local communities in becoming more climate resilient. The money will go to 80 projects across 37 states, DC, and the US Virgin Islands The projects will help local Infrastructure better stand up to extreme weather causes by climate change.
The Senate confirmed Susan Bazis, Robert White, and Ann Marie McIff Allen to lifetime federal judgeships in Nebraska, Michigan, and Utah respectively. This brings the total number of judges appointed by President Biden to 193

i know we’re shifting into springtime but climate anxiety has me genuinely unsettled and nervous abt the temperature not being freezing anymore 😭 like i let out a big sigh of relief when i saw the forecast predicting snow this weekend as if i was seeing a negative pregnancy test. this is all almost exclusively ronald reagan’s fault i will not expand upon that

updates on the current situation (5/6):
85 dead and 134 missing (confirmed). over 200k people lost their homes, with around 47k of them in shelters and 153k at a relative's/friend's house. over 1.1 million people affected in 385 out of 497 cities. thousands of people across the state have no water or power supply, and we won't have those for at least a couple weeks. it hasn't rained in the metropolitan area but it has in the southern cities.
the main tv channel, Globo, finally acknowledged the tragedy properly but we all know they're doing it only because they have to. when it was still raining and flooding everywhere, they literally only reported the Madonna show in Copabacana. they would speak about RS for 10 minutes and her show would get 30 min. honestly, nothing wrong with the show or anything (frankly i'd love to be there and not just because we're currently underwater) but they should've been more sensible. this is one of the worse catastrophes in the history of this country and they basically said "okay we hear yall we just want to see Madonna first ok then we'll talk about whatever yall are going through". and just now they're sending reporters to talk about us. i might be overreacting but this feels so fake and like they don't actually care about us, even if they do.
anyways, it makes me happy to see everyone in the community helping each other. there are so many volunteering that some shelters had to formally announce they have more than enough to help and this makes my heart so full. ofc there are terrible people everywhere (and there a LOT here) but the good ones are stronger. i was struggling to see humanity but it's here, in every volunteer and rescuer and anyone who's taking their time to help in any way or another, be it sheltering friends or donating. we the people are the ones who are actually doing the most so yeah this is also a huge fuck you to the government who's not even doing the bare minimum 👍
sorry i ranted a little to much on this one but i had a lot to say lmao good night

I was missing the library I adored as a little kid so I looked it up online and guys. tears in my eyes. they have the progress pride flag in their icon on social media year round. a photo on google maps has "PRIDE!" written on the giant window in the kids book section in window pens with a rainbow underneath it. I can't wait to go back to the country that loves me so much I've seen just endless fierce love and respect for my community and I'm genuinely struggling to keep myself together right now because I've gotten so used to hiding and not being seen, or being seen by people who think I shouldn't exist. aotearoa I love you so much I can't wait to fall back into your loving arms I can't wait to make one hundred new friends. I will claw my way along the ocean floor to get back to you if I have to
