It's Steve being an ass out of fear and Billy not caring too much to start with because he's just enjoying the tease of him. And then Steve being an ass because he enjoys the power, he sees Billy wanting it more and he starts to enjoy it more with less fear but he still needs to feel a control so he's a little cruel, baits him and toys with him. And Billy starting to feel it but still not wanting to give this up, goes along with it.

And then maybe eventually he draws a line and Steve gets angry and fearful and mean, maybe messes with another guy in a way so that Billy finds out to make him jealous or finds out Billy is messing around with someone else and he starts trying to take them away, but when it pushes Billy further and he gets cold with Steve, he realises he's just hurt and starts to crawl back a little sweeter when he realises he misses Billy and not just what they were doing.

Or maybe Steve just realises he wants to hang out with Billy and not always be doing something, just be around him, talking and laughing and just leaning against him whilst they smoke or watch tv, with no other agenda. And it's difficult and he missteps a lot but they get there and he realises all the shit he done to Billy and starts trying to make up for it, being kinder and sweeter and caring and the way hes been with other partners before, and Billy is overwhelmed with getting what he wanted deep down. Maybe it's hard to navigate and he doesn't react well, scared to give in to it just for Steve to return to that cruel way before? But Steve doesn't. He deals with his issues and communicates more, cares openly with Billy. And Billy starts to learn to believe in his own self-worth and when he struggles, Steve makes sure to help him know it. And they actually start being happy.

I just love what you've done and how you write it, but i hate how it's consumed me and its the only type of relationship I wanna read right now.

I'll live for any little mentions of your nasty!Steve though. Thank you ❤️

AND! listen, i would have put this under the cut, but there’s plenty there already, and I NEED to share. I usually listen to music while drawing, and this piece was not an exception. and while I do have my own iwtv playlist and also the show ost on hand, i was listening to a random mix of my other saved songs. and the goddamn “без бою” by океан ельзи starts playing, and i almost fell from my chair with how hilarious i suddenly found it. I don’t think someone who isn’t ukrainian can fully understand why I could barely breathe for like ten minutes, but if I were trying to explain it: it’s an incredibly popular ukrainian song, it was EVERYWHERE when I was growing up, and it’s always been the embodiment of Heterosexuality (TM) for me (I’m not even sure why exactly). but surprisingly enough some of the lyrics fit weirdly well with these two, and it gave me such a delightfully bizarre whiplash… I will leave those specific lines in the comments(?) under this post, and i do actually recommend the song! it may be overplayed here, but it’s genuinely a good song!))

this piece is actually one of those I’ve already done for this fun art prompts challenge! (@icryink, thank you for the prompts!!) I came across it accidentally, but loved the idea a lot, because cringe IS dead, and I have actually never drawn many, MANY things on that list. so I’m doing this challenge mostly for myself (and my interpretations of the prompts are very much influenced by my lack of knowledge about much of that stuff; and also by my “little shit who does not want to do what they’re told to” nature, a bit…)

From one to five stars, how would you rate your writing? (No downplaying yourself!)

        I’d say a 3.5. I’m proud of my work, but there’s always room to grow and improve. 

2. What do you think makes your writing stand out from other works?

        I think my writing style focuses a lot on the complexity of the inner emotions the characters feel. I like to take a lot of time fleshing out their inner selves that way when there’s dialogue or they commit a specific act, readers are able to say to themselves “yea, this is very them”. All in all, I like a lot of emotion. 

3. Are there any writers that inspire you?

        My fellow writers café members inspire me! Everyone has such different styles and ideas, it really makes me want to be more innovative. I don’t really have any specific muses, to be honest–the fanfiction fandom in general makes me want to write and see my ideas developed.

4. What’s the fic you’re most proud of?

        “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call” and “Dance In The Dark”. 

5. Which character(s) do you find easiest to write and which do you find most difficult to write?

        Steve Rogers for sure is my easiest. I love that man with my entire being and have dissected him and my interpretation of him so many times. I find Geralt of Rivia a bit difficult to write, hence why there’s no work for him.

6. Who or what do you find yourself writing about most?

        There’s not really a who, more like a what–my emotional wounds. Writing is used as a tool for me to not only bring my ideas to life, but use them as vessels to work out these emotions and proverbially close that chapter of my life by turning them into something positive. 

7. Tell us about a WIP you’re excited about!

        I have a very cute “Spy x Family” meets “The Incredibles” one shot for Miguel O’Hara in the works featuring Filipina!Reader, Gabriella O’Hara, and reader’s daughter hehe 

8. First fandom you ever wrote for?

        I’m really gonna expose myself here…it was for Black Veil Brides LMAOOOO 

9. Any guilty pleasure trope(s)?

        GIRL (gender neutral); black cat gf x golden retriever bf, the mean one being soft for the sunshine one, enemies to lovers, reincarnation. 

10. A trope you’ll never, ever write for.

        Mafia/mob boss. I have one singular wip with that trope and after that, I’m retiring it. Cannot stand it, no offense. 

11. Wildest fic you’ve ever written?

        Definitely my demon! Lee Bodecker and ghost!Steve Rogers fics. Those were RIDES.

12. Favorite pairing to write for? (platonic or romantic!)

ENEMIES TO LOVERS, BLACK CAT GF x GOLDEN RETRIEVER BF, and THE GRUMPY ONE BEING SOFT FOR THE SUNSHINE ONE. I clearly have a preference. 

13. Do you listen to anything while you write?

        Either bossanova, classical music, jazz, lo-fi, or a playlist I made specifically for whatever I’m writing.

14. One-shots or multi-chaptered works?

I don’t have a preference tbh. they’re both very impactful, it just depends on the plot in question. 

15. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!

yES ALL THE TIME. especially for fluff pieces with family dynamics, I always wanna create little side drabbles in the style of “modern family” like they have their very own sitcom. 

16. Is there anything you’ve wanted to write, but you’ve been too scared to try?

writing for Geralt of Rivia. The deep lore for The Witcher seems like a lot of ground to cover. 

17. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received?

I can’t remember anything specific, but my fic “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call” received a good amount of super meaningful feedback from Filipino readers that meant a lot to me. They expressed how much it meant for them to be seen, especially in a fantasy-fairy tale like story that incorporated our culture.

18. Have you ever gone outside of your comfort zone for a fic? How did it turn out?

Yes, lore building for “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call”! I’ve never written anything in the fantasy genre, so that was definitely a challenge. It turned out amazing. I loved writing it and that fic is one that is near and dear to my heart. 

19. Tooth-rotting fluff or merciless angst?

I’m a fucking baby and I can only have angst if it’s followed with fluff…..but I do love angst.

20. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!

EEEEEE I currently have one OC for a re-write of my series called “Keeping Up With The Starks”. Her name is Camila Santos Stark, a Filipina-American who is the only daughter of Tony Stark. She’s a spoiled heiress but is definitely a no-nonsense woman who you do not want to underestimate. She’s described by others around her as the rational version of Tony–the snark is there, but so are a bunch of other characteristics that Tony doesn’t possess. Steve Rogers is her love interest. He thought she was a spoiled brat, but look who fell in love!

21. If you could enter the universe of any one of your fics, which would it be and why?

Definitely “Take Me Into Your Arms, Siren’s Call” – it’s pure fantasy which sounds amazing. Plus, Namor! 

22. Is there anything you wish your audience knew about your writing or writing process?

Eh, there’s nothing really interesting going on behind the scenes–I just write at night with a candle lit.

This is possibly one of my favourites most likely IS the best fan fiction I’ve read of anything it’s amazing! I’m just about to read part 8 and I just wanted to ask:

What are you’re top 3 Elvis songs or songs you may listen to when writing this?

Ahhhh, I LOVE this ask because I'm a bit of a music nerd and I really had to think about it. (Also, the fact that I'm at the top of anyone's fanfic list boggles my mind--thank you so much, honey! 💗)

Okay, okay, so here's my thing--I can't listen to songs while I write, but I DEFINITELY get inspired by them and have them on repeat for a thousand years. I currently have several on my repeat playlist, but if i have to narrow them down for Pink Scarf in particular, they would be (I've linked the specific versions below for your viewing/listening pleasure!):

Power of My Love (1969): This my number one for this series, no question. Besides the accuracy of the lyrics, it's sexy as hell, punchy, bluesy, and you can literally HEAR the cockiness in his voice and i just CANNOT. It's hot. It's perfect. I've gone on and on about it before, so I won't go crazy here, but yes. This is it.

One Night With You ('68 Special, second sit down session): If you listen to the lyrics, this one is pretty self-explanatory, but this one is particularly about how he sings this specific version. The man has sex and seduction OOZING out of his pores in this performance (He's so sexy here I'm pretty sure everyone in that audience is pregnant. Hell, it's 54 years later and I'm falling apart over it!), yet somehow, there's still an element of sweetness and humor there. I absolutely LOVE the raw grit and power in his voice during the '68-'70 era and think it really adds to the overall vibe of the song. It's definitely an inspiration in terms of getting into him as a character.

Just Pretend (That's the Way It Is 1970, midnight show): This one isn't 100% lyrically accurate to the story, but it's close enough for me. I think this is one of his most underrated songs/performances because he makes this song sound easy and it is not at all an easy song to sing. It is just such a good ballad and really showcases his artistry as a vocalist. But the moody feeling of this performance just speaks to me in terms of the story. (I'm gonna get a little nerdy as a vocalist here, sorry!) He's telling a story, and reflects that with his vocal dynamics so well--soft to loud, keeping it light and easy one minute then really digging into his baritone (belting high in his upper register in chest voice!!). That vibrato is *chef's kiss* His phrasing is phenomenal. His voice is really starting to develop maturity and control in 1970 and maintaining some of that youthfulness (which I love), without being super heavy (like he gets in the later '70s).

Honorable Mentions: It's Now or Never (1960) (for the young!elvis/the years of pining on his end, and it shows off his vocal range so well) and Craw-Fever from the movie soundtrack (it's seductive as all hell).

1. Do you listen to music when you write?  

For writing fanfiction, I don’t really listen to music unless it’s a song that inspired that fic. Then I listen to it in repeat😂😂 When I’m writing my own stuff I tend to listen to a few playlists on YouTube that are like “epic music for writing” or other various playlists that don’t have music with words. I’ve got a few I cycle through depending on the type of scene I’m writing.

3. Computer or pen and paper? 

For fanfiction, the notes app of my phone because I can just do it whenever. When I’m writing my own stuff I use my laptop because its easier for me to think bigger if that makes sense😂😂

17. What writing habits or rituals do you have?

Hmmm I think the only habit/ritual I really have is that every other time I sit down to write I read through and tweak the last thing I wrote. I know that TECHNICALLY you’re not supposed to edit as you go but it just makes it so much tidier in my brain.

18. If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be, and what would you write about?

Honestly if I could collaborate with anyone it would be my older sister. The biggest fan of our original writing is our younger sister and my older sister and I want to write her a story that has two of our characters interacting together (her two favorites). The problem is we can’t find time to plan it since my little sister is always in the house😂😂

21. Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?

Oooooo this one is actually tricky😂😂 I think for fanfiction I more enjoy playing around and pushing preexisting dynamics so I don’t think there’s a specific character right now. For my personal writing… oh boy my babies. So far I think it’s Quinn, the snarky and jovial sci-fi pilot/smuggler who’s moral compass points firmly towards money… until children are involved. He also has a British accent. Yes, it is important to his character. He’s one of those characters who feels things very deeply but tries to put on a facade about it. Absolutely delightful to write he’s here for a good time, not for a long time (much to the chagrin of his first officer and close friend whose self appointed job is keeping Quinn alive).

27. Favourite line/scene

Favorite scene I’ve written (this is cheating) is probably my fic Little Talks. It’s a Les Mis Jacert lives and is redeemed fic and it’s got so many good scenes in it that came out even better than I thought they would that I can’t pick one. 

36. Last sentence you wrote

Last line I wrote was from a WIP for Star Trek TNG. It’s a fic where Riker gets deaged by Q and it’s discovered that his father was abusive to him. Because that ep with his father… super dubious parenting and I think someone should address it so what’s fics for besides forcing people to address things? Also of those lowkey vent fics tbh😂

“What you deserved,” Picard said lowly, “was nothing but love from your father, and it pains me to hear that you believe you deserved such abuse from him.” 

40. Share some backstory for one of your characters

I’ll give you the backstory for one of my side characters in one of my fantasy stories. His placeholder name is Romeo and he was like the equivalent of a medieval fantasy playboy. A true bard. He broke the heart of a sorceress and she cursed him to be nothing but a skeleton until he learned how to love selflessly. He is AWFUL and I love him. He’s just sour and feral all the time and regularly eggs people on the make bad decisions. Which is objectively hilarious coming from a skeleton.

45. How much world building do you do?

Before I start writing, I like to have done enough world building that I understand the general vibes and structure of the world. This looks different for every story tho tbh. One story I’ve been meticulously building for four years and another I made up as I went along. I guess it’s more accurate for me to say then that I do enough that I can understand the characters’ relationships with the world. I’m very much a “people” writer and focus on the characters more than anything else (like, unfortunately, the plot😭)

46. Do you reread your own stories?

Look at risk of sounding arrogant there are very few of my stories that I do not enjoy rereading, and it’s mostly just the ones I wrote when I was like 15. I am the target audience for all of my stories and I will unashamedly admit that I regularly go to my own AO3 page and read my own fics and go “that was a good one good job me”

Fun fact, when I wrote my Yandere Church AU, I listened to “Si Deus Me Relinquit” on repeat for the angsty religious vibes ♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪

where do you usually get inspos?

Ohh that’s an interesting question!! Most of the time, I just randomly think, “Hey, this [idea] would go well with [character]. Other times, I get inspiration from fan art and fanfics.

Some of my fics also began as DMs shared with my mutuals!! It’s rlly fun to share brainrot and ideas with them and watch them suffer

Yes. I’m very picky with the characters I read about + write for, so it’s usually just my biases.

This is especially true for Genshin. By now, y’all know that my muses are Capitano, Pantalone, Dottore, and Pierro. Idk I just rlly like their lore, personalities, and dynamics with their darlings~

I’ve also written for other Harbingers, though it’s more of a one-time thing. In general, I only write for those four Genshin characters.

son mis locuras - blanca’s inner monologue while she’s still living with her family, i guess? nothing super deep. i like the line “me dicen ‘nena, te pareces a tu abuela’” (“they tell me ‘baby, you look like your grandma’”) because blanca’s named after her maternal grandma, so that’s a fun coincidence with her story and the song that i didn’t even think of when i added it to her playlist at first tbh

maría la curandera - it’s like her favorite tía in mexico teaching her about doing limpias (spiritual cleansings) for herself when she visited as a kid. cozy comforting vibe overall

cumbia feminista, mujer moderna, whore - these are grouped together because they deal with purity culture, which is something blanca had to deal with her whole life and it felt like it got worse the older she got. people trying to dictate what she wore, how she expressed herself, being catcalled and shamed, all that fun stuff :))) whore specifically relates to her dynamic with someone from her past who tried to put his idealized image onto her and got mad when it didn’t line up with who she actually is. she blares that song when she’s reminiscing and she looooves shouting “you love me for everything you hate me for” at the top of her lungs.

crumbling down → recuérdame → la llorona* - things are rough, but she’s alright for the most part now that she’s living on her own finally. → death of the tía she was close to, she struggles with it a lot because she felt like no one else really understood and accepted her fully. → remembering the time she was visiting said tía and how she and her cousin saw la llorona! the song comforts her because it’s a reminder and again, she thought la llorona was kind of pretty. (she wonders if la llorona scared the shit out of her cousin on purpose, to make him drop her instead of tossing her into the river to fuck with her…)

la vida es un sueño* - she lives life how the hell she wants! she’s over people trying to take advantage of her and tell her how to act. she’s angry and tired and done. side note, my favorite lines are “corazón sangrado, me has abandonado / necesito una limpia, que ando embrujado” (“bleeding heart, you abandoned me / i need a cleansing, because i’m cursed”)

songs 12-18 are the mushy toca (toki/blanca, coincidentally this means “touch” in spanish!) songs LOLLL i think the lyrics are pretty obvious so i won’t go into detail too much. i’ll add in (b) and (t) to show whose pov the songs are from

👋🏾👋🏾 what was your inspiration to create your main oc?

There are so many influences and inspirations within Eve that it’s hard for me to explain them without making a novel so! Lemme break this down as a list of 4 things.

A big influence on Eve’s design is the actress Lynn Whitfield!! Specifically how she looked in the movie A Thin Line Between Love And Hate. See, Eve actually began as an older woman (as seen on the left) and maybe one day we’ll get to the point where I depict her and Sal at this point of their life, but that day is not today.  As a character, Sal was created first and Eve was made to be his girlfriend from the get-go. But I became interested in exploring their dynamic when they were younger and this is the Eve (on the right) ya’ll know!

I was drawing Eve long before I created her in The Sims. When it came to middle-aged Eve I was looking at a lot of 90s glamor for inspiration. When it came to young Eve I wanted softer, brighter colors - white and pink specifically. So many drawings of her were inspired by 90s shoujo girls and admittedly some of her personality traits are definitely influenced by girls in animes I grew up watching. The internal longing for someone!! The willingness to hit the guy you like when you’re embarrassed by him!! In Dear Diary I use a bubbly effect for Eve’s fantasies for a reason lmao (and below we can see a picture of Eve from summer 2020 I think)

3. Her interest in ballet and dance is directly influenced by my grandmother who did ballet in her youth. I grew up hearing my grandma reminisce about her lessons, or seeing her dance around the house, so the life (and issues) black ballerinas go through have always interested me even when I was uninterested in dancing. 

4. Victoria Monet became my latest and unintentional source of inspiration for Eve, she just kept popping up on Spotify whenever I was writing! I went from being like, “okay, she has some nice songs - I feel like this should go on my writing playlist” to listening to whatever she had up streaming. Her voice is so sweet and soothing, and her lyrics range between romantic and sexual, they’re really the perfect thing to listen to when I’m trying to get into Eve’s headspace. 

Beyond all of this, I just felt it's important to show shy black girls who are hyper-feminine and full of so much love they have no idea what to do with it!

sorry to go off rn but those m cr fans are just soooo bitter for no fucking reason. they think their morals have to align with their music tastes and find any sort of way to find any sort of dirt on other bands they don’t enjoy. example i constantly see callout posts for band guys that usually overlap with similar fans and music with m cr. look i know band guys can suck and obviously they shouldn’t be praised like saints, but these out of nowhere callouts for band dudes i see are always from m cr accounts. are you actually wanting to call out shitty behavior or do you just want points for being high and moral because youre the fan of the most unproblematic feminist anti capitalist band who’s never done anything wrong?

Last song listened to: “To Noise Making (Sing)” by Hozier. It’s on a playlist I made a few days ago and have been listening to on repeat since.

Last TV/movie watched: in general, whatever was playing on the TV at my client’s home today (I’m a home care worker). Of my own volition, meaning something I actually chose to watch rather than just catching a bit of because I happened to be in the room when someone else was watching? I have no idea, but it’s been, at minimum, several months since this happened, and possibly over a year. (Getting me to watch TV/movies/videos of any kind is, famously among my family, an incredibly difficult task. Including for me.)

Current obsession: okay, that’s gonna take a few paragraphs to answer.

Biggest one right now is The Magnus Archives, with the caveat that my specific obsession for the past six months or so has been a particular AU I’m working on, and my even more specific obsession at the moment is Jon and Helen’s dynamic within that AU. And a bit outside it as well—“the narrative structure of this character dynamic is artistically brilliant and makes me go Absolutely Feral (positive)” and “the narrative structure of this character dynamic is incredibly depressing and often I’d prefer to engage with their relationship in the context of a canon divergence AU where things turn out differently and they have a chance to explore some of the possibilities their canon circumstances never allowed for” are… um. They are sentiments that can coexist.

Other specific things within the TMA universe and/or my AU of it that have seriously caught my attention include but are not limited to (under a cut because it got ridiculously long):

Mike Crew and autism. Specifically:

The, pun absolutely intended, vast quantities of evidence in the text that he is autistic. I literally have an academic essay mostly written—complete with citations!—that goes through the ICD-11 criteria for autism spectrum disorder and some other well-known autistic traits point by point and presents canon evidence that he absolutely meets the criteria. (Writing this—and starting it at three in the morning when I got the idea—may be the among the most autistic things I have ever done.)

The potential implications of Entity affiliation in autistic people being related to sensory needs. (I have a whole theory on why so many avatars seem to be neurodivergent and/or queer—something about a need to belong literally anywhere, something else about self-fulfilling prophecies and it being easier for the Entities to get ahold of people who are already made to feel inhuman—but that’s not the point here.) The paragraph in Mike’s statement describing how he feels about falling is one of the most relatable things I have ever read in my life, to the point where I have directly quoted it at people to explain why the idea that amusement park rides might be a migraine trigger for me upsets me so much (yeah, I know. Hush). And the thing is, I know at least part of the reason I’m that way—I have a medically diagnosed autism-related problem with my vestibular system. It’s underactive and doesn’t interpret signals the way it’s supposed to, which means that a) I’m never intuitively sure where my body is in space, which results in both chronic clumsiness and a chronic feeling of mild derealization or disconnection from the world around me, and b) really intense vestibular input (like, say, falling, or spinning, or rocking, or rides that incorporate those things) both feels REALLY good and temporarily fixes both of those things. Putting that experience together with my strong opinion that Mike is autistic, I kind of read his draw to the Vast as at least partially an “I have intense vestibular sensory needs and I’m going to make that everyone else’s problem” kind of thing. Which, tbh, good for him. I support disabled wrongs.

Mike’s backstory as an autism metaphor. I mean. He was pursued by a manifestation of the concept of doubting your reality and perceptions and escaped by the power of special interests. Come on.

The concept of the Fairchilds. I mean. You tell me there’s a formalized found family of Vast avatars who all take the same last name and support each other in various ways, and then you never elaborate?? (Me: *furiously writes fic about this*)

I tried my best to incorporate both POVs but I think it leaned too Viktor-centric. However, my fav Yuuri song on here is Bravado, it captured his anxiety during the Scandal so well and I resonate with that. It was hard to pick for Viktor but One And Only really stood out to me, it reads like his plea to Yuuri. BUT if I had to choose one song to explain their dynamic it’s Untouchable, applicable for both Yuuri and Viktor and just as heartbreaking.

I listen to music a lot while writing, although you’ve asked here specifically about Nichoji.

Please be patient with me while I meander from the general to the specific.

🤔GENERAL

Lana Del Rey helps me set tone and mood for my own writing practice – in particular two of her albums are (for me) no-skip albums: her Lust For Life and Born To Die are indispensable for me when I’m getting ready to write, even if then I move on to other music over the course of a writing session (which I usually do, sometimes pretty promptly). I listen to similarly lyrical stuff while writing dialogue (even, although rarely, audiobooks). I listen to a LOT of EDM, particularly trance and retro/synthwave, while writing intimacy. I generally listen to just pop-y sort of stuff while editing (💝Kylie Minogue💝, Gregory Dillon, Mallrat, KAROL G). Anything that’s darker – trauma, breakdown, fights, spirals – I will listen to music that I perceive as thematically dark – particularly iwilldiehere, Isabel LaRosa (but never the ‘sped up’ versions of anything, get that stuff outta here), and Tove Lo.

Of course, then there are days when I can’t stand music – like seriously, ‘do NOT play any music at me’ days – when I need silence or something else. Those aren’t common, but they happen usually when I’m trying to tidy something up, and music does nothing except bring in additional complexities or subtleties when what I’m actually trying to achieve is simplification, reduction, or downsizing. In those instances I do need something to block out environmental noise, I’ll typically use rain/storm sound effect tracks just to provide my brain with something that it can think about in the background.

🤔SPECIFIC

Anyway, Seiji x Nicholas:

It’s heavily dependent on which Nichoji we’re talking about, honestly. I’ve written different teenage Nichoji dynamics, and teenagers are a different proposition to my adult Nichoji dynamics, which I’ve written across different eras and with different vibes. I made a handful of playlists of tracks which were helpful for me while writing individual pieces and which I thought might help people enter the same sort of headspace while reading or thinking about those pieces.

But let’s assume we’re talking late-teen vanilla Seiji x Nicholas.

Playlist Analysis: #4 - A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square

#4. A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square – Vera Lynn

Both.

Overview: 

An obvious choice for this playlist. This is my 1941 song. I chose the Vera Lynn version because I just love her style (and I think it has to be the one they heard first), but the Tori Amos version is great as well. If you like it better or prefer it because it’s the one used in the show, please feel free to swap it out if you’re listening to the playlist. 

This is their song. First published in 1940, it’s a beautiful song about meeting someone, falling head over heels, spending the night together, and dancing home the next morning. I think that up until Crowley said those immortal words, the audience thought that it was their song on a meta level. The book and season 1 both mention it from a third person point of view with no acknowledgement or reference from the characters. But now we know that it was something the two of them found important together. Did something else happen in 1941? (Chomping at the bit for 1941 part 3!) We know something changed their dynamic between 1941 and 1967. We know Aziraphale did the apology dance in 1941. Maybe this is why Aziraphale specifically suggested they dine at the Ritz someday after giving Crowley the holy water. Why would Crowley have said “No nightingales” if it wasn’t something significant between them? Aziraphale’s wounded reaction to those words confirms its significance. The fact is, Crowley weaponized this song in a riposte to Aziraphale’s reactionary petulance. 

Lastly, why was it playing in the Bentley after Aziraphale left? We know the Bentley has been fundamentally changed. It’s no longer Crowley’s car, it’s “Our Car.” I think I remember seeing a quote from Neil along the lines of, “The Bentley would have followed Aziraphale anywhere.” Who was it channeling to play that song? I’ve seen people speculate that Crowley queued it up for their drive to the Ritz, but I don’t buy that. Maybe it was a way of Aziraphale communicating that his heart still sings despite the regrettable things they both said and did. Or maybe it was Crowley’s heart betraying itself – an admission that there is a guarantee that he’ll still be waiting when Aziraphale is ready. Or maybe it’s just the writer wanting to hurt us even more. 

Lyrics: 

That certain night, the night we met There was magic abroad in the air There were angels dining at the Ritz And a nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

This wasn’t the night they first literally met, but maybe it was the first time they met in a figurative sense: being in the same place emotionally at the same time.

Neil has said that they dine at the Ritz because it was in reference to this song. In the book and season 1, maybe that’s all there was to it. One last clue for anyone who missed all the other indications that their relationship isn’t just platonic. But in season 2, we get the magic show. There was no literal magic in the air because Furfur blocked it, instead all the magic present was of the human variety. Romantic AF. 

I may be right, I may be wrong But I’m perfectly willing to swear That when you turned and smiled at me A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

This sets me up to assume that nothing was spoken in 1941. Nobody confirmed any feelings out loud, due either to the threat they had just confirmed they were under or the habit they were already in, but they both understood how the other felt. "That's what... friends... do." That feeling where you just know the other person feels the same, but can't bring yourself to say it. The willingness to swear an oath that whatever was unspoken by the parties involved was mutual. Maybe sung about by a third party somewhere (The writer? The audience? God?).

The moon that lingered over London Town Poor puzzled moon, he wore a frown How could he know we two were so in love The whole darn world seemed upside down

Up to this point in the lyrics, the interactions between the characters in the song are meeting and looking. No contact, not even words as far as we know. These two have been trying to keep their fraternization a secret for millennia, after all. Anyone watching couldn’t hear the song being shared by the two hearts, but the two hearts sing anyway. A silent, beautiful, and disorienting duet. 

The streets of town were paved with stars It was such a romantic affair And as we kissed and said goodnight A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

The elation of intense romantic feelings has been described poetically since romance was invented (invented by these two, IMO). The description of streets being paved with stars evokes images of fantasy, dreams, vastness, wonder, possibility. It’s romance in a nutshell. Not to mention evoking the Starmaker, himself. I don’t assume that they kissed in 1941, but at the end of the 1941 segment we get in season 2, everything is so gentle and romantic it doesn’t even need a kiss. A figurative act of intimacy, the bullet catch, was observed by someone who could destroy their "de-facto partnership," thus ending their night of magic.

As dawn came stealing up all gold and blue To interrupt our rendezvous I still remember how you smiled and said “Was that a dream or was it true?”

What fan doesn’t want to live in the 1941 sequence? The assumption that they hadn’t seen each other since 1862, Crowley showing up out of nowhere and at great personal discomfort to save Aziraphale, a little demonic miracle of his own, the way Aziraphale gazes at him the entire sequence, and Crowley’s unconditional support through the entire thing, despite his obvious concerns. What happened that we didn’t see? Just how long did they spend together? What might have happened if Furfur didn’t show up? And what happened afterward? Their rendezvous was interrupted. They had let their guard down and were reminded of the very real danger they face by getting too close.

Our homeward step was just as light As the tapdancing feet of Astaire And like an echo far away A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square

This verse, in this context, has two meanings for me. But also a much more tragic meaning. Another time one might be described as having light footsteps is when sneaking around. After being caught, despite knowing the proof had been pilfered, they may have redoubled their efforts to appear as enemies. They realize they still have to sneak around to have any time together. That beautiful nightingale’s song is sadly now only an echo in the distance.

Danse macabre is here because i was describing their dynamic as "some sort of 'danse macabre'" because this tone poem (i looked it up in Wikipedia lmao) was getting recommended to me the whole time and i guess the name of it really got into my head (oooh dance, ooooh of death).
