“I forgive you” parallels
Ok. Listen up, my little sweet potatoes. I figured something out.
I previously posted about how I thought the Final Fifteen “I forgive you” might be code.
And then today I went for like a 6 hour aimless drive to clear my head, and, yeah, I have audio recordings of a few of my favourite GO scenes, which I listen to on repeat sometimes as an auditory stim. And I noticed a few interesting parallels, and I think I’ve cracked it.
We, as the audience, have seen a few things only once before.
Season 1, after the Bandstand Breakup, outside the bookshop, Crowley is back and saying ‘let’s run away together’. In this conversation, we see the only on-screen instance (before the Final Fifteen) of Crowley calling Aziraphale stupid, and the only previous time Aziraphale has used the specific phrase “I forgive you”. If we take this and the bandstand together, we also have very likely the only previous time Crowley has been bold enough to say ‘let’s go off together’.
So what happens in Season 1?
1. Armageddon Part I is imminent.
2. Crowley suggests they run away together.
3. Aziraphale says ‘no, I’m going to stay and work with heaven to fix things’.
4. Crowley calls Aziraphale “stupid” for taking sides and believing heaven cares about good.
5. Aziraphale says ‘I forgive you’.
6. Crowley leaves.
7. Aziraphale talks to the Metatron and gets transported to heaven against his will, and is expected to fight for their cause.
8. Crowley waits for him.
9. Aziraphale comes back to Crowley.
10. They work together and things turn out okay.
Does any of that sound familiar?!?
Let’s look at how the Final Fifteen plays out:
1. Armageddon Part II is imminent
2. Crowley suggests they run away together.
3. Aziraphale says ‘no, I’m going to stay and work with heaven to fix things’.
4. Crowley calls Aziraphale an “idiot” for taking sides and believing heaven cares about good. (Also: you’re an idiot for choosing heaven over me).
5. Aziraphale says ‘I forgive you’.
6. Crowley leaves.
7. Aziraphale talks to the Metatron and gets transported to heaven (against his will?), and is expected to fight for their cause.
8. Crowley waits for him.
I mean….
Is there any chance at all that either of them doesn’t remember the first time they had this conversation? That they’re not also seeing the parallels?
That Aziraphale isn’t getting flashbacks to Armageddon, that he isn’t aware that something could go terribly wrong here, but that he has to try and, please, Crowley, be here when I get back?
Listen, when I say “I forgive you” I know we’re only halfway through this dance? Wait for me. I’ll come back to you.
(I wasn’t going to add this, but the only time Aziraphale has used to the word ‘idiot’ is when he said “I’m not an idiot, Crowley” when he thought Crowley was going to use the holy water on himself and that’s some foreshadowing I don’t really want to explore).

It's been six months since he left. Crowley's Angel. His best friend. His other half. It's been six months since he's heard a Goddamn peep.
And yes, he doesn't care so much anymore about blaspheming against the name of God. He was always so careful about it around his Angel.
Now? His Angel is gone. His Angel isn't there to care what he says.
Gone to follow along with the Metatron's plan all the way to his and everyone else's destruction, no doubt. How could Aziraphale not see that? How could Aziraphale not see past the surface to the rot underneath? And they called Hell ruthless.
Nevertheless, the last six months had been Heaven on Earth for Crowley. His only Hellish piece of reprieve was his favourite pet. His mortal. They'd all been friends before Aziraphale left.
Well, this moral had accompanied him and his Angel around despite their warnings against it. A Demon and an Angel could be discorporated and come back, but a mortal? Well, one little mistake and they were gone for good.
This little human. This pet had stuck extra close to Crowley since Aziraphale had left. Crowley hated to see the pity and concern painting their face when he was having a particularly awful, nice day. Not that any of them were all that... Hellish any more.
But it was the pity that really irritated Crowley- a Demon already prone to frustration and mild to moderate anger issues, mind you. And if this human- asked him one- more- time, if he was okay; he was going to lose it.
Of course, as humans were always going to (a flaw in the design if you asked Crowley)- this particular mortal would push, and push, and push until Crowley's metaphorical buttons were all but snapped in half. And Crowley had had enough.
And that's how Crowley found himself balls deep inside his pitying little mortal, doing his damndest to convince them that, actually, no. Crowley did not need their pity.
Crowley snarled above them, pulling at their hair, yanking their head back away from the Bentley's door. His mortal's breath fanned across the windows, streaking the glass with damning evidence of the acts being carried out within.
"I- am a Demon," he snarls, teeth flashing dangerously by the mortal's ear. "I am not to be pitied." This is emphasised with a hard thrust from behind, causing the mortal to yelp, hand slapping up against the fogged glass to keep themselves steady.
Crowley lets out a deranged throaty chuckle, hand coming down to grip harshly at his pet's hip.
"I've lived eons on this pathetic excuse for a planet. This Earth-" The hand wraps harder around the mortals' hair. The hand on the glass slips, smearing through the fog marks. It's a wonder they can hear Crowley over the sounds of their own whimpers and moans. "This breeding ground for sin. I have seen eons of pain, and I'll see eons more!"
Crowley's head tips back, baring his throat's apple. A little lock of hair falls over his forehead- the only indication that he was at all affected by the pleasure of his hips snapping forward into the tight heat before him.
His mortal whines out Crowley's name, lost in the haze of being fucked by a Demon. Crowley had had thousands of years to learn how to fuck the way Humans liked it. More than enough time, clearly, given the fact they'd already come twice and another was well on the way.
Of course, the mortal knew deep down that this was not a convincing way for him to show them that Crowley was okay. That was obvious to anyone with half a brain cell, but this didn't mean they were going to argue- what with Crowley's decidedly not entirely human-feeling dick buried inside them.
"Fuck- Crowley-" They whined, eyes squeezing shut.
"No," Crowley hisses, twisting their hair so the mortal could just see him over their shoulder. They couldn't see his eyes though, sunglasses still hiding those from them. A coping mechanism, they suspected. "Look at me, pet. Look at me when you cum."
The mortal whines, hand reaching back to brush Crowley's hip in warning. They were sure the human body wasn't quite meant to be this flexible, but Crowley didn't care. He needed this, whether he knew it or not.
Crowley's thrusts increase with urgency, both for himself and his mortal. They're both close, and they know it. Crowley lets go of his pet's hair, allowing their head to flop forward and their cheek to press against the Bentley's leather backseat.
With his other hand free, Crowley is able to grip both sides of their hips and pull them back against him, thrusting hard and fast to reach that blissful peak where he might be able to forget. Just for a moment.
His mortal finishes with a cry, fingers grappling with the leather as they try to work their way through the assault. Crowley fucks them through their orgasm, prolonging the pleasure they're feeling without mercy.
It takes only a few more thrusts before he finishes too, coating their insides with ropes of his cum, an almost-roar ripping its way through his throat. The pleasure hazes his brain for a minute or two, courses of pleasure wrapping around his nerves.
Slowly, he pulls out, watching the way his mess starts to drip out of his mortal. He chuckles breathily and waves a hand to miracle away the mess. He's kept the Bentley in such pristine condition all these years. He's not going to let it go now.
"I- do not- need your pity," he pants, pointing an accusatory finger at his mortal who promptly nods and collapses against him, snuggling up close. They know it's not true. They know he needs them right now.
They're happy to wait as long as it takes though.
Crowley's worth it.

I think I've FINALLY got it.
Tumblr media
I figured out a some-what definitive, sure-fire way to tell if someone is more of a Crowley, or more of an Aziraphale. Better than any B*zzf**d quiz could hope. (Especially for the girlies like me who are a heavily intertwined combo of both.)
So, after watching many reaction videos to the end of S2 E6 (don't judge me, we all cope in our own ways), I've determined that it all comes down one thing. That is, how you react to Crowley saying, "Right... And you told him just where he could stick it then?" etc. Basically, the initial moment of his rejection of Aziraphale.
Reactions I've seen to the scene had a fair number of confused faces at Crowley's response to Aziraphale's offer. Lots of furrowed brows and head tilts. If that was you, congrats! you're an Aziraphale!
Tumblr media
"But wait!" you say. "I was just caught up in the moment. The possibility of it... For God's sake! The romance!!!" Umm.. yeah. Exactly.
Now if you, like me, reacted to Aziraphale's offer before Crowley even said anything. Well, I'm sure you already know where this is going. Said reactions include, but are not limited to, eye-rolling, face palming, repeatedly saying the word "no," and/ or yelling "Really?!" at your screen. If this was you... Congrats! You're a Crowley!
Tumblr media
"That makes sense, though..." you say. "Why would anyone want to go back to somewhere with people that shunned them?" Too right you are!
Bonus points if you saw people being confused at how Crowley responded, and were then yourself, confused as to how they could be. That's what happened to me, and well, here we are!
If you're still not convinced - Crowley's and Aziraphale's - then think on this: How did you react to Crowley, yet again, pleading for Aziraphale to run away with him?
If you thought it was romantic and "Oh my god, why can't someone ask me that?!" You're Crowley baby!
If you thought it was insane and "Everything they love is here! They can't leave and give up on it!" You're Aziraphale my love.
Tumblr media
The crux of the Ineffable Divorce - as said by many - is that these two don't know what the other truly wants. Almost more importantly, though, is that Aziraphale doesn't consider what Crowley would never want. Going back to heaven would be number one on that list. Under no circumstances would that be a thing Crowley would want. Even if it meant having a blessed existence with Aziraphale.
On the other hand, Crowley knowing that Aziraphale would never want to go to hell is supposed to be a give-in. Just as Crowley himself not wanting to go back is a give-in to Aziraphale ("Of course...you're the bad guys"). Crowley doesn't realize that maybe his go-to quick-fix of running away together, though romantic, doesn't actually fix anything for Aziraphale.
No matter what, these characters are (canonically) two halves of a whole. Even as their separate halves they are incredibly complex, and therefore, hard to emotionally pin down without contradiction. Beautifully, much like real people.
Tumblr media
Last, but not least, if you don't feel represented in your reaction to Crowley's rejection, I hate to break it to you, but you're Muriel.
Tumblr media
You're the passive watcher outside the window, collecting data like a nature documentarian/ officer constable concerned with matters of the heart. And we love you for it!

Call me asexual but Aziraphale wasn’t starving to kiss Crowley, he was starving for a life together. He was starving for drinking and dancing and loving each other without boundaries. He was starving for soft, meaningful kisses that mean love, for trying the beautiful, confusing things that humans do to feel closer.
Aziraphale’s expression after the kiss says “I didn’t want that.” He looks appalled. Crowley turned a gesture meant to be beautiful into something broken and desperate. He turned their relationship into something broken and desperate.
He didn’t want the kiss, he didn’t want another, he wanted Crowley to take it back so they could do it again but Right.

I’m of the solid opinion that the ineffible divorce was inevitable. Like, I love Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship, but it had a lot of problems. And if we do get a season 3, the ineffable divorce will be key to finally letting their relationship happen in a healthy manner.
Instead of accepting Crowley for who he was, Aziraphale held him to the same impossible, cruel standards he held himself. He doesn’t believe that he’s better than Crowley, but he believes he has to be and that’s his role and he’s trying so hard to fit inside that box that it explodes. I can’t truly blame him for it—he’s been brainwashed for millennia—but he ends up passive-aggressive and condescending. And because he thinks he has to be better, Aziraphale also puts less overt effort into the relationship, so Crowley’s always the one pursuing him.
Crowley’s insecurity causes issues too. He believes that he’s bad because he fell, and so he has to believe that Aziraphale can be bad—or at least neutral—too. So that Crowley isn’t so bad, so that he can be worthy. Just like Aziraphale doesn’t truly believe he’s better than Crowley, Crowley doesn’t want Aziraphale to fall. But just like how Aziraphale believes he must prove himself better by coaxing Crowley into the light, Crowley feels the need to prove that Aziraphale and him aren’t too different, that Aziraphale the unfallen is still corruptable. And Crowley constantly “tests” Aziraphale to make up for his lack of self-confidence, like by seeing if he can convince Aziraphale he’s evil enough to kill the children or by tempting him.
And they both really do love each other. They care about each other. They want the best for each other. But they also have a lot of trauma and deeply-rooted toxic beliefs and insecurities that mess with their relationship. I firmly believe that Aziraphale was the one who messed up in that final scene, but he wasn’t the source of all their problems. The ineffible divorce doesn’t just reset their dynamic—it warps it. It allows Aziraphale a chance to apologize and pursue Crowley, allows Aziraphale to confront his assumption of Good being good (it’s a lot easier to ignore Heaven’s problems when you’re on Earth), allows Crowley to be less reliant on a single person for emotional support and validation, and allows Crowley the opportunity to—despite his defensiveness and insecurities—open up again and take a leap of faith.
Doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, though.

Playlist Analysis: #2 - I'll Be Your Mirror
Return to Main Post
#2. I’ll Be Your Mirror – The Velvet Underground
This is a Crowley song.
Overview:
Someone on tumblr asked Neil Gaiman (prior to Season 2) about Aziraphale and Crowley’s favorite songs. At the time, he said Crowley’s would be this one. I think it fits nicely right here. “What is a Velvet Underground?” “You wouldn’t like it.” Maybe Crowley was embarrassed because he thinks of Aziraphale when he hears this song. It was released in March 1967, the year Aziraphale gave Crowley holy water, which also feels significant.
I like it up near the beginning of the playlist because, like Everyday, it’s not necessarily sad on its own, though the tune is a bit melancholy and the lyrics full of emotion, and because it was a season 1 song. (Neil has since said that he thinks Crowley’s favorite song is now Pale Blue Eyes, #7 on this list (which I’ll get to later.) It encapsulates the way Crowley sees their relationship during that time. They are reflections of one another. They may appear to be opposed in the way one does when looking in a mirror, but they have the same qualities in their hearts: a desire to enjoy creation, to do what humans do, to protect the earth and its inhabitants, and to do what’s right even if they aren’t “supposed to” or if it goes against their presumed nature.
I think this song has a lot to do with their relationship from Eden through Job, though it still applies to any part of their relationship. The Eden conversation is so casual. Both sides are still figuring out what the rules are. I like to think that Aziraphale admitting to Crowley that he gave his sword to the humans – the sword he was given specifically to threaten the humans if they attempted to return – is what inspired Crowley to do what he thought was right, regardless of what he’s told. I also think this way of listening to the song works well leading into the next song and thinking of Companion to Owls.
Lyrics:
I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are, in case you don't know
Crowley can see Aziraphale for what he is: someone who will do the right thing. “I don’t think you CAN do the wrong thing.” Of course, Crowley knows any angel can do that “wrong thing” since he certainly did something Wrong™ in order to fall. In this context, “the wrong thing” isn’t the opposite of what’s “right,” rather it’s making your own judgment call that may upset those in charge. Maybe this is a proclamation Crowley made to himself as if to say, “I like this guy’s style. I’m going to be like that.”
I'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset
The light on your door to show that you're home
This is Crowley’s promise to Aziraphale after Job. Feeling depressed can be like a lonely wasteland. Stale, arid, oppressive, empty. A companion who truly knows you can be that fresh breeze, the blessing of rain in the desert, the beautiful sunset that promises relief from the heat of the day, or even just a porch light simply signifying that you are present.
When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you
When Aziraphale worries about doing the “wrong” thing or the Bad™ thing or something for which he’ll get into trouble, Crowley is always there to convince him that things aren’t binary. Is it as simple as temptation rationalizing in order to serve Crowley’s desires? Maybe sometimes, but that would be the exception. More likely, as at the end of the Companion to Owls sequence, there is a very specific and personal empathy Crowley has for the desire to hide one’s true nature when compared with the expectations our societies put on us. Without a reflection, we can only see parts of ourselves. To be told, “I see you for what you are, and it’s something I want to look at.” Isn’t that what all of us really want?
I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty you are
But if you don't, let me be your eyes
A hand to your darkness so you won't be afraid
Aziraphale has anxiety. I doubt anybody would debate that statement. Constantly conflicted about his nature and his “nature.” What an Angel™ is (by design and definition) and what he is (through his experiences and choices). Other angels seem to be callously on their side of Good™, without compassion or mercy. When the angels bully him in season 1, he clearly doesn’t think that’s how they SHOULD be acting, but he complains about their conduct, not their motivations. Aziraphale seems to generally* buy into the smiling corporate veneer Heaven displays. When he doesn’t live up to that standard, he needs someone to tell him he’s beautiful inside. The gentle hand of a kind friend to guide him through his own uncertainty.
*Aziraphale thinks for himself. He is naïve, wanting to see the best in everything and everyone, but he’s not stupid. There was a distinct turn in his feelings for Heaven during season 1, but he habitually reverts back to his old binary thinking while waiting for the bus in season 1 “I don’t think my side would like that”, and in season 2.
