Unchained Love: I still hum the unhinged flute intro on a regular basis, easily my fave intro of 2023! I didn't actually finish the show due to dwindling interest, but for the first 14 episodes or so I took a keen pleasure in it (and it made me go on a eunuch webnovel spree, expertly curated by @mercipourleslivres). I love it when heroines are allowed to be truly funny, rather than just quirky or ditzy. Also appreciate the goofy Lamp Prince turning into a brutal incel tyrant the moment he got power.

Six Flying Dragons: I don't think I can write anything succinct enough for the roundup format so I direct you to my "my sfd tag" if you want to access my enthused livetweeting. Show of all times, lives were changed.

Tree with Deep Roots: I literally can't think of a better topic for a tv show than Sejong the Great constructing hangul together with his band of nerds, one of whom he has a weirdly intense, vaguely erotic relationship with. Han Suk-kyu carried this entire show on his trembling shoulders. What an actor! What range!!! It was such a treat to watch him smugly debate his ministers, roleplay a farmer, and hiss half-mad soliloquies to himself in the dark. It took nuance and depth to portray the kind of inner conflicts and generational trauma that Sejong battles in the background of this drama. To be honest I didn't always enjoy the Milbon subplot which I felt got repetitive, and often found myself wanting to fast-forward the wuxia scenes. In a better world the show would have centered the whip-smart palace maids and their alphabet workshops. But I will definitely rewatch this soon. And maybe also write a fix-it where Sejong and Soo-yi fuck idk.

Quartet: Cute little murder mystery about a found family of freaks, liked it a lot.

My Country: The New Age: As entertaining as ever. Very fun to rewatch this back to back with Tree with Deep Roots, since Jang Hyuk plays diametrically opposite characters with the same vigor and commitment.

Gone with the Rain: Sometimes you watch something which you understand is technically a masterpiece but it doesn't do anything for you, and sometimes you watch a piece of campy silly fun and it makes you tingle with joy. This was the latter category for me. I liked the first and middle parts enough to make up for the lukewarm fizzle of an ending.

The Autumn Ballad: Has some fucked up elements that are difficult to stomach, but the parts that are good are really good.

Not Others: Bingeable! But imo they could have cut out the stalker/murder cases and just focused on the excellent family drama.

The Matchmakers: This surprisingly swooped in towards the end of the year as my favorite comedy of 2023, all thanks to a rec by @haraxvati. I adore Cho Yi-hyun in this role!!! She is so hot as a shrewd matchmaker with a fake mole and a twinkle in her eye. Love the virgin prince with his yearning-induced panic attacks (Rowoon didn't work for me in The King's Affection in a quite similar role, but he's so much weirder and lamer here, which is something I like in a man). I am obsessed with the side plot of the crossdressing romance novelist and the solemn police officer who is trying to capture her and ends up giving her free home renovations and smouldering looks instead. Also, Park Ji-Young and Lee Hae-Young are two of my favorite villain actors on their own, and here they are married!! Still have a few episodes to go, but I intend to binge them as soon as I post this.

Dramas I dropped or paused:

Our Blossoming Youth: I shipped the heroine and her cute maidservant a little too much to bear the dull prince they stuck her with. But I might rewatch it some day bc I want to write a Sherlock Holmes fic for the girls.

Little Women: A real disappointment, because I love Louisa May Alcott and I love Jeong Seo-kyeong. Once again, letting the women kiss might have solved much of it.

Island: Casting Kim Nam-gil as an expressionless cool-guy action hero offends me personally. (Yes Song of the Bandits I'm giving you the stinky eye also.) But Lee Da-hee and Cha Eun-woo were delightful!

See you in my 19th life: I couldn't, even for my most darling Shin Hye-sun, go beyond episode 1. There's something about a kid dating another kid even though she's a literal adult inside her brain that I can't really vibe with.

My Dearest: I do intend to finish this, but I lost the thread after the first half. It got a little too dark for me I think.

Plot Love-plot???

Fake Princess- it’s a bad budget, but kinda cute in that way. The leads had chemistry

Maiden Holmes-I dont see the hype in this. It wasn’t good at all to me.

Reset-WORTH ALL THE FUCKING HYPE

The Autumn Ballad- it lost itself towards the end but VERY worth it regardless. These two had so much chemistry, I just wish it had better payoff.

Sparkle Love- low budget but idk it was cute to me

Love in a Loop- chinese remake of a kdrama. Very underrated

The Legendary Life of Queen Lau- he is so fine and she’s a different type of female lead, I think they could have made it sweeter.

You Are My Glory-so boring. They both make incredibly boring dramas

Love Between Fairy and Devil-I wanted to love this but didn’t. Really pretty though and I love Dylan and Esther in general, but the plot left a lot to be desired.

A Dream of Splendor- this would have been drama of the year if it weren’t for the that moment towards the end. If you want a strong couple, strong chemistry, and overly feminist storyline, here’s your show.

Out With a Bang

New Life Begins- Bai Jingting can do no wrong in my eyes

Since I Met You-budget ? otherwise... it’s okay

Healing Food, Healing You-bad dub, very distracting

The Oath of Love-too long and boring however these two are cute when they’re cute

A Romance of the Little Forest- watch for the prettiness of it all. The storyline dragged and the second leads get tooooo much screen time. The writers kept the leads apart too damn long.

Why Women Love-it was boring but I loved them together

Cute Bodyguard-he’s cute but she was annoying 

My Kungfu Girlfriend- web drama so expect that budget, but really cute. The kiss was.... HOT 12 episodes

Don’t Be Shy- don’t waste your time with the last two episodes. It was cute until then. Web drama, not great quality but 10 episodes

The Love by Hypnotic-after they start liking each other, it loses me.

President’s Secret Wife-idk what I watched

Time to Fall in Love-okay but the sfl annoyed me

My Heroic Husband- he was a different kind of male lead

The Autumn Ballad

I love all 33 episodes. I refuse to believe episode 34 happened. That bullshit does not exist.

I liked both of the main characters and leads. Good acting. Believable characterization where they are flawed, make mistakes, learn, and grow. (Last ep never happened, damn it!)

Banter between the leads when they didn't like each other had me HOOKED. The mini-golf eps were awesome.

Qiu Yan's rants about societal mores and social norms were epic.

Liang Yi's shift from "locking my emotions in a cage" to "I can do my job and have a heart" felt realistic.

Little Sis being the weak ass who is too jealous to see straight should have stayed suffering but of course they redeem her in the stupidest way.

Qin Xuan and Song Jin got the rawest deals.

Why include the bro moment between Liang Yi and his most disgusting rival if they revert his character back to asshole in the next scene?

The characters who got redeemed and those who got villainized by the end seemed kinda random and not really thought out. But of course the ending was not thought out because EPISODE 34 WTF.

The intertwining of the various mysteries to the final was also done well. I liked the stories for the most part.

Seriously, cdramas need to reexamine their need for unnecessary character deaths. They're truly unnecessary.

If I ignore the final ep, it's 8/10. If I include the final ep, it's a 7/10.

Edit: So I hate slow burns, so getting into danmei WAS HARD!!!! So I'm looking for romance, and I don't mind pining a bit. But most danmei are slow burn with pining, so I don't think I'll ever find a danmei where it's mostly romance. I got into SVSSS cause I really liked the couple and didn't know it was gonna be a slow burn. TGCF I got into cause i saw so many romantic things, HuaLian! Didn't know I was gonna have angst city!!!! I got into MDZS cause I honestly read all of MXTX books so let's just read the last one! I didn't know they were all slow burn or just everyone pining forever😅😅

Another Edit: I don't mind angst! I live for it! I just want a lot of romance!

Really recommend watching The Autumn Ballad the way I did: stopping right after Qiu Yan goes away in episode 28 and picking it back up in the last minutes of the finale. That way it seems like she just went traveling for some time and wrote her stories, while Liang Yi (inspired by Song Jin’s admonishments) choose to quit his job as a torturer cop and went after her, but couldn’t find her right away. Luckily the two of them finally crossed paths in the small community of Ancient China whodunit writers and nothing bad happened in between and all side characters are still alive back in the capital. No fix-it needed. You’re welcome

Currently on the 5th episode of Wrong Carriage, Right Groom (2023) that I’m watching with my mom when I’m not watching My Journey To You, and like I feel nothing for the second ML. And I would rather Sha Ping Wei be the general groom, just because his own interactions with the second FL have been so fun as he keep trying to get her crossdressing self to be his bro.  The reveal of their actual identities would have been amusing.  Plus while the actor for the SML has not been in anything I’ve seen before, Zhan Yu has the advantage being in The Autumn Ballad and The Legend of Zhuo Hua as the bodyguard character that I like.
