NAME: The Big Cheese
LOCATION: Downtown (Near UMWR campus)
Like every college town, Wicked’s Rest has a few haunts that college students tend to flock to. The most popular is The Big Cheese, a pub with a variety of games and pub fare decked out in UMWR memorabilia and cryptic Bessie sightings. No matter what UMWR sport is going on, the game or match can be found on the many televisions throughout the bar. Because of this a chorus of moos can often be heard from outside the bar as students cheer on their team.
Most items on the food menu have some sort of cow or dairy pun in true UMWR spirit. The most popular of which is the Gouda Burger… which doesn’t actually come with gouda. It’s a cheddar bacon burger that is admittedly very gouda.
The game room portion of the pub has a giant game of Connect Four, Skee-Ball, darts, and cornhole. Patrons lovingly refer to this room as the Grotte de Game-age in reference to the cheese cave their mascot hails from.
A mystery person who goes by Big Brie has held the Skee-Ball record for five years straight. No one ever sees this presumed student playing the game. It is speculated this may be Brett, one of the longtime bartenders, but he always denies this.
In the spirit of UMWR and the Grotte de Fromage, there is a cheeseboard on the menu. This is mostly nice and filled with different local fruits, cheeses, honeys and spreads, and roasted nuts, but there is the option to add some cheese from the Grotte de Fromage. While not tasty, this addition can be quite the trip. Don’t worry about the fact the cheeseboard uses an ouija board for its board.
Every Tuesday night is Trivia Night. A lot of the questions are rooted in town and campus history, including some of the supposed origin stories of Wicked’s Rest’s local cryptids. Most of the “correct” answers are actually incorrect, but locals love competing for fun prizes that range from cheeses and UMWR swag or gift cards to the bar.
