Buddie 618 meta
Since this could have been the show finale, not just this season’s, I hope you allow me to do a small overview of the ep as a whole with this in mind.
Tumblr media
I’m gonna be honest, I want to send ABC a bouquet of flowers, because if this would have been the show’s last ep, it would have been an incredibly disappointing one. Not that it didn’t have merit. 911 has always been about the importance of the good that we do - for ourselves, for our loved ones and for strangers. That’s why the significance of this ep’s emergency was actually great. We got to see the 118 saving themselves, each other and be saved by a complete stranger, who wouldn’t have been there if it weren’t for the 118 saving him four seasons earlier. My issue with it is that it would have been better IMO to spread out this emergency over two eps, really give it room to resonate emotionally, in much the same way that Buck’s lightning strike did. That would have also left more airtime for the team’s personal lives to get closure.
Tumblr media
When looking at the personal resolution to the 118’s stories, I did like the return to Henren’s adoption via foster care storyline, it needed closure and I’m so happy this is the one it got. I have talked in more than one fandom about the importance of showing how same sex couples ACTUALLY go about becoming parents, so I think this is extra significant. I can’t wait to see this not just being a wink at the end of a show finale, but an actually developed storyline in s7. I also think “Here’s to more chaos and more love” is my fave line in this ep and a perfect summary of the best of 911. I also loved Bathena getting to go on their honeymoon, getting to live carefree for a moment. They absolutely deserve this, and it felt even better thanks to being a callback moment. I also enjoyed seeing Madney seal the details of their wedding. I have loved and enjoyed them since Maddie called Chim cute in 206, they deserve all the happiness and joy, and to me, having to see her twice this season bracing herself for the possibility of losing Buck and / or Chim (in 611 and now) made it even more meaningful to see Madney happy by the end of the ep. Again, I can’t wait to see the actual wedding in s7. It’s gonna melt all of our hearts. Still, all of these resolutions felt a bit rushed and I believe they could have had more of an impact if they were more than blink and you miss it moments during the final montage.
Tumblr media
But if those felt underdeveloped, that’s nothing in comparison with Buck and Eddie’s personal lives’ resolutions. Was 911 really going to leave them with the “endgame” of women who literally only showed up as Love Interests in the last couple of eps of the show? If I weren’t a part of fandom, as a casual viewer, I would sincerely not have even remembered Marisol from her emergency, so I would have been confused by her and Eddie’s conversation. In fact, I found it funny that when Eddie wants to text her, it’s presented as a disruption to Bobby’s talk, just like Buck’s call with Kameron. I also thought it was wild that we discover Marisol and Eddie exchanged numbers, because that most certainly wasn’t even hinted at during 617. We clearly saw him walking away, they exchanged a last look, and that was it. Eddie and Marisol are so underdeveloped, we don’t even know how they happened! Did Marisol rush after Eddie? Did he come back to ask her for her number? Did they both decide to take the leap? How did the conversation go? Why was their phone call in 618 so awkward if they had already made their intentions clear when they exchanged numbers? We have zero answers to these questions. This was so forced, so unearned, so underdeveloped, it makes it painfully obvious that it was done just to not leave Eddie heterosexually single. Because I’m sorry, homosubtextually, he’s been married for years.
Tumblr media
Which brings me to Buck and Natalia. I gotta roll my eyes at my own 615 meta, where I talked about the meaning of her name connecting her to birth, now we literally had her at the birth of Buck’s bio kid. What a piece of ironic foreshadowing. And yet, despite Natalia being a bit more developed than Marisol, despite the fact that Buck had what was maybe the most invested in personal resolution in the finale, it was still a let down for me. We have mostly seen why Natalia doesn’t suit him in eps 615 and 617. She did come back in the finale, but then so did Taylor in 414. That doesn’t mean either woman fits Buck as a partner. I’m left with the uneasy feeling that we have here a rerun of that s4 finale in terms of the ep shoving both men into relationships with underdeveloped LIs. TBH, the juxtaposition makes 618 worse IMO. Because the comparison with Marisol and Natalia actually makes Ana and Taylor look slightly more invested in! That says a lot about how little 911 cares about the 618 LIs. But it also gives me this bad sense of stepping in place with Buck and Eddie in terms of their romantic development. For example, the fact that Buck ends up tying yet another one of his couches to yet another gf at a way too early stage of their r/s (too much time couldn’t have passed between Kameron giving birth, ruining Buck’s couch, and his conversation about getting a couch together with Natalia since he was just getting around to having the old one looked at to see if it could be saved. He’s once again rushing into commitment with a girl he doesn’t yet know well enough, and who we saw in 615 he was idolizing as truly seeing him, when the truth was very different or she wouldn’t have run out on him in 617. I also can’t tell you why Natalia came back based on the few interactions we’ve seen between them, we haven’t had a single meaningful moment between them so far to explain it, making it clear he’s going in circles. I do suspect Buck doesn’t realize this is him repeating past mistakes, he thinks this is progress given his ability to let go of the baby, which could be an interesting angle to explore in s7. But probably what makes giving Buddie rushed heterosexual “endgame” LIs worse is that every bit of development either man made that isn’t about their love life got sidelined in this ep...
Tumblr media
I think in a sense, the underdevelopment of all of Buck and Eddie’s LIs, even the “endgame” ones in what could have been the show’s finale, might actually be a testament to the power of Buddie. If a showrunner knows they could never hope to develop any LI to have with either Buck or Eddie even a tenth of what they have with each other, that can explain not even trying. In fact, we got a reminder of the strong bond between these two men during the call. Buck saved Eddie, just as Eddie saved Buck during the lightning strike. The way they looked at each other, the zoom in on their hands grasping one another, was very emotionally poignant exactly because we have seen these two losing their whole damn minds trying to save the other man on more than one occasion. And Buck used the words “I got you,” a reminder that they will ALWAYS have each other’s back, on and off the field.
Tumblr media
The good news is that ABC has a chance to correct the course of where this finale left off. I do believe the move is being done knowing they would have to rejuvenate 911 if they want it to fare better than on Fox, and I think that giving Buddie the room to become canon would be exactly that. But I have said in more than one of my ask replies that to me, no matter what, this show has been telling the epic love story of Buck and Eddie, with the little family they built. Whether TPTB go through with that canonically or not, this is what they gave us. And nothing will take that away from me. If 911 ends with Buddie being single, I’ll just assume their feelings realization and confessions happen after the end of the show. If 911 ends with “endgame” heterosexual LIs, I’ll just know that those couples eventually break up at some point during the 118’s post-show future, and then Buddie finally get together. Because that’s the story we got over the course of the last 5 seasons, one that only has a single possible resolution, whether the show itself gives it to us or whether it forces us to have to imagine and write it down in fix-it fics ourselves. We ALL know what we saw. We ALL get what Buddie have. We ALL see how that inevitably would lead to them getting together sooner or later, and if it doesn’t happen during the show, then later it is, but it WILL happen. That’s how I look at the show, and that’s why even if this were the last ep of it, it still wouldn’t have destroyed Buddie for me. I hope this POV can help others, too.
~~ I’m gonna be here during the hiatus, if anyone wants to be here with me. Thank you so much to all of you who made s6 a lovelier ride by taking it with me! I’m endlessly grateful for every single one of you. xoxox

Ok there is something I’m really lost on. I was looking through tags in the post that 911bts posted about that girl who showed up in that ep where her and her bro may or may not be incest, lol, and I saw something. And I’m just so lost but they mentioned how if Kristen is the show runner, buddie ain’t happening. And like.. that confuses me a lot and I don’t understand that sentiment. Where does it even come from? Do we watch the same show?? 😂
It’s misogyny and revisionist history, plain and simple. Kristen has been responsible for writing (and then in 5B and S6 overseeing) some of the best moments of their love story and respective character developments: she threw down the opening salvo showing there had been a major sea change in their relationship that the audience didn’t see over the hiatus between S2-3 in 3x01, she wrote 3x18 with JCC, she wrote AND directed Survivors (including the shooting aftermath and the guardianship scene), she wrote the queerest breakup scene in the history of breakup scenes between Eddie and Ana in 5x03, and also both 5x17 (with them being domestic af in Christopher’s room + all of the lovely Eddie growth and healing in Texas with his dad) and 5x18 (Buck’s breakup with Taylor). And in S6, she’s overseen and signed off on everything even as the signs have gotten more and more explicit? She’s made some awkward comments in interviews, sure, but imo nothing even close to the way Tim used to loudly insist that they were like Band of Brothers and have the same relationship as Chim and Hen (which isn’t even touching his obsession with Taylor which is the reason we had to suffer through MW’s bad acting for so long). And there’s zero reason to think she’s homophobic, especially since we only finally got a Henren Begins/an entire episode fully dedicated to black lesbian love story, after she took over as showrunner (since Tim had refused to do one iirc). Anyway, it’s all bullshit but people love to hate women.

I know we've had this conversation before but the ep has me confused and excited and devastated (Chris's abandonment issues have me reeling) and feeling a whole lot of emotions that I don't know what to do with and I'm having thoughts and this app is my place for all thoughts.
So we've all seen how everyone talks about how dating someone you meet on a call never works out. And there is evidence for that for both Buck and eddie. Now if we take the other canon relationships none of them met on calls. Bathena, madney, henren, all three wonderful beautiful couples and not one of them were introduced to each other through a call. But with the other two??almost every relationship has been that way. With buck there's Abby who he first got in contact with through the dispatch line and then she dug up his phone number (which I am still so irked by) but yeah through a call, then ali who he rescued, taylor again he rescued, and then natalia who AGAIN he met at another work scene. And we know how all of them ended.
Now with eddie shannon wasn't through work (and I will forever stand by the fact that they wouldve been so good as a divorced couple but I digress) but both relationships after shannon have been that way. Sure ana was Chris's teacher first but he was super pissed at her during that era and it was only after he treated her hand at the scene did he ask her out, that is meeting someone at work. And then marisol obviosuly they met at another rescue which is has me thinking if they try and make her permanent which I really hope they don't because the whole thing with them was just iffy from the beginning with her being kinda in love with her brother(how did they move on from that????) to eddie asking her out after his conversation with Bobby about the exact opposite and then with the new episode they didn't give her a role. It was like she was just there to smile and nothing else. She was ignored so badly that it's got me wondering what they were thinking actually bringing her back if they're not even gonna give her a proper character. And did you see the way they were standing during chris's date??it was just so awkward. Its like shes being written into the show to eventually be written off. I just....yeah I don't know where I was trying to go with this but yeah there's so much they could do with buddie because they built that base and the fact that Marisol has been around for what??2 maybe 3ish months and I think I'd be pretty dam confused if they chose to keep her(not even gonna start on the whole issue with the actress). So are they gonna stick with the whole 'dating someone you rescued is bad' thing which would make the most sense or do they have soemthing in store for us??
I don't know man. I just wish they relaize the solid background they have for buddie and actually try to make it happen.

Buddie 509 & 518 - Connecting Dots?
Past is Prologue (509) was honestly such a gift. Like. 509 is an even wilder ride after watching (517 &) 518. The whole concept of past is prologue is that the present echoes the past and the future does too by extension. But growth is still possible, hence it’s prologue but not necessarily the whole story. There were so many amazing beats from that ep that hit harder now that the season is over.
Tumblr media
Gabi & Chloe - In 509 Chloe met Gabi while administering Gabi’s driving test. Gabi was doing a terrible job driving but it fit with the metaphor because her life was changing in big ways and was confusing to navigate. She saw some signs and missed others. She was trying to find herself and a better road than the one she’d left after breaking up with her previous girlfriend. Chloe gave direction and advice the whole way. She was also kind and supportive of Gabi despite the bumpy ride.
Buck and Eddie are parallel to Gabi and Chloe in a host of ways, no matter who we associate with whom in the Buddie-Chlobi equation (yeah I said Chlobi pls don’t hate me lol). Both Buck and Eddie have been having a bumpy ride this season as the driver in their own life and the passenger in the other’s life. Each has given the other support as well as advice along the way. Each has missed the signs and taken wrong turns, and neither ran away when the going got tough! Through it all Buddie have grown closer and the potential for something romantic between them has gotten louder and louder. Even when Buddie were more distant than usual, they were still in each others’ lives which gave them the opportunity to find their way back to one another in a deeper way! We spent all of s5b watching all of the above happen and it was glorious!
Tumblr media
Eddie & the Ticking Time Bomb - We also got the oil well bursting out of the road in 509. Oil is a rich resource but it can also be dangerous if improperly handled. Cue 517. Who do we know that works with oil and has improperly handled it? Ramon!!! He was a petroleum engineer ffs and he managed to squeeze financial security out of it but it cost Eddie dearly, as we learned in 517. We saw that his road was made exponentially harder on several fronts (509) because of his efforts to not be like his father. He ended up completely shutting down parts of himself and/or never fully recognizing, accepting, and exploring other parts so that he could stay in control and travel the hard repressive road that he thought was his only option (517). Eddie had essentially filled the oil well with trash and paved over it. Then it burst out and flooded the streets (509). The capped oil well was a ticking time bomb and so was Eddie’s buried, trash-capped, paved-over heart. He quit the 118 in 510 and then had his build up toward full-on breakdown from 511-513.
Tumblr media
Toni & Clive - Their epic long-lost/long-awaited love was a major narrative vehicle for 509. What I always found fascinating was Eddie’s clear and intense interest in how it ends. On the surface it was just the telenovela drama of it all but it seemed a little deeper for Eddie. He had a certainty and hopefulness about their love that leapt out throughout his whole conversation with Buck and Hen. On Buck’s part, he was worried about opening up old and painful wounds. Given the shooting and hostage situation on Buck and Eddie’s back at the time, I took that to be a clear narrative moment linking Buddie and Toni/Clive just like most of the rest of the fandom. By the end of the ep Toni and Clive do find their way to each other. I think Buck and Eddie will do the same. I’m looking at you, season 6!
Tumblr media
Gabi/Chloe, Henren, & Eddie’s Sexuality - The show could have stopped there, but no. In 509 it was clear that Clive and Toni were meant for each other and then in 518 Toni and Clive announced their engagement but instead of Toni and Clive getting married in the ep, Henren renewed their vows after receiving Toni’s apology, full support and loving presence/officiation at the event. The vow renewal in 518 was a narrative slide-of-hand transferring the emotional catharsis from the het couple to a lesbian couple and in so doing healing the past, reaffirming the present, and paving the way for the future. In my brain, that’s a queer future for Buddie!
The vow renewal also felt like a continuation of Gabi and Chloe’s story since it was clear in 509 that they did in fact form a romantic relationship. The three things linking Gabi/Chloe to Henren in my head is the fact that 1) 509 had a lot of low-key Eddie content foreshadowing his breakdown and the underlying role of his father in that breakdown, 2) the whole season had a lot of high-key Eddie healing arc and Buddie content, and 3) during the vow renewal, we see another scene where Eddie is talking about therapy. He obviously has more to work through and it’s scary stuff, which Chris picked up on. I believe that the next round of mental health/healing work Eddie has to do on-screen is sexuality related. Having the Eddie mental health foreshadowing in 509 be linked to a queer couple from a call AND having the Eddie mental health foreshadowing in 518 be linked to a queer couple?! Can’t be a co-inky-dink!!

I'm not even mad about buddie, like I had zero expectations for anything buddie AT ALL and was even pleasantly surprised by the scene where buck rescues eddie. But everything post-collapse was rushed and muddled and made no damn sense!!! The directors and producers spent 40 whole minutes hurting every single one of the main 118, and then there's no fallout or recovery from that (AGAIN)!!!
The pacing has been ALL over the place this season, and theres been so much time dedicated to buck's storyline and in the end it's all FLAT, like at least give him a resolution to the 4-5+ storylines introduced in buck centric episodes jfc he surely must be getting tired in that hamster wheel
Yet they always make it fall flat with what I like to call a "rug pull". They'll have a solid most of an ep (like the coma ep!) and then with 10 minutes left, they'll do a rug pull that disrupts the entire momentum of an ep, and leaves everyone (fandom and ga alike) going HUH??
make it make sense showrunners 😭
Real…like I had multiple issues with the finale it’s just so wasn’t that good of an episode plus they released like so many sneak peeks it was basically half of the episode. I hate they rarely show recovery it always is just like they’re hurt and then a few minutes later )or an episode or two later) they’re miraculously healed and fine. They do too many time jumps.
My issues aren’t just buddie….like I didn’t expect them canon or anything by the end. Like Idk if this was a last ditch effort to tie up stories but everything felt way too rushed and unfinished. Like madney I need their wedding, henren I’m all for adoption but I feel like there had been no talk they were fostering at all anymore, Ravi got like nothing(not that I’m surprised). I feel like the only one that I don’t have issues with would be bathenas ending.
Also not even Buddie related just Buck related he should have picked his couch alone in my opinion…not even with Eddie.
Rumor has it it’s the lowest rated episode ever…I think the one that was lowest before that was the Taylor centric one.
It should have had an end like season 3 where the whole team was hanging out at Eddie’s place..would have made more sense tbh.

Unpopular opinion or not but season 7 feels kinda odd to me on so many levels…it's like it's not the same show anymore
1) The arc cruise was not that good and angtsy, it was rushed, irrealistic and had too many empty plotlines… The hostage situation would have been so good but ? they gave 1 min onscreen and it was gone …so useless. this arc was not like i imagined, it was more angtsy in my head i wanted more drama and 118 rescuing bathena, i wanted feral Buck and screams tears lmao …the helico scene was also nothing like i imagined i was so upset… i was so hyped because everyone was excited and was like '' it's even more spectacular than the tsunami arc '' ….where ????? the cruise arc is my least fav arc with the final of s6 because it was rushed and the characters was too " calm '' like this arc
2)the humor. I love funny episodes they are my fav, but this season it's everywhere even when it's supposed to be serious and angtsy and it's so odd …?!? it's almost ooc to certain characters …i don't get it. we had like almost 0 serious calls or when it was well it was again sooo rushed and not that deep. And why they are all seperated now even more on calls i find it annoying …like they barely had a scene all together
3) Eddie is kinda ooc for me this season … I get it, he's more open and he's happy and i'm really happy too for him… but again it's sooo odd ?! like suddenly it's not the eddie i know ?! the only time he acted like himself it was during the coming out scene with buck and with chris ( the only good scenes in this season with henren and mara because it feel like 911 ) Yeah i want him free from his traumas and he's exploring all the things he couldn't do when he was younger and all but again it's just so odd … I miss the old buck sometimes when he was feral over Eddie because i have one fear that he won't act like this anymore with him or bobby or anyone else now … because the way he acted on final s6 make me so upset it's like he didn't care about Eddie …
4) Tim and everyone teasing that Buddie will be closer than ever …yeah they are together on every calls but ..thats all & during season 6 we had SO many domestics scenes and buddie moments, for me this season was the best on buddie contents ( i just want to forget the final but yeah ) yeah we have 5 more eps to come but i'm sorry i doubt we will have this level of buddie this season …I stopped theorizing about buddie bc i know it will not happen. we have 0 hints so far … and Oliver just confirmed to me it will not happen. Nothing will happen during the bachelor party. and nothing will be hinted at the end of the season i just know it.
I want to believe it's because this season is shortened because of the strike but … if we have the same vibes on s8 i'm gonna stop watching it. I think 911 is lowkey bad since s5 ... season 6 was not that good too and season 7 is kinda the worst
Okay anon thanks for letting us know

Downed a pot of coffee ☕ this morning and transcended into peak hiatus crackheadery headspace, so now I'm obsessing over the possible motif of coffee in this gotdamn show, and also this might just turn into me losing my shit over Future Tense again, so fair warning ⚠️:
(If this has been discussed before I do Not apologize bc I am too far gone for these fools to be sensitive about repeat discourse.)
Now, Future Tense. This damn episode, it will haunt this fandom and my dreams until the end of time won't it? I just thought that, in an episode establishing the main pressure points for the characters/couples this season, it was fcking WEIRD that Buck and Eddie were not only featured together but their plotline was The Coffee Maker Saga. I mean, Madney was clearly set up for the birth and the fallout of the birth to be their pressure point (see: Maddie's PPD); Henren was clearly set up for med school and juggling a family to be their pressure point (see: Nia, Hen's mom returning, juggling med school with all this); Bathena was clearly set up for their miscommunication to be their pressure point (see: Athena quitting therapy and Bobby sponsoring the DUI lady without telling each other); and Buck and Eddie get.......game night and coffee maker pranks? How suspicious. Got me actin up over it, actually.
Please indulge my caffeinated crackheadery for a few minutes here. The first instance we witness coffee discourse is during the first emergency, bw Buck and Eddie. (Now, it may also be worth pointing out that one of the focal points during the emergency is the coffee maker going haywire, but I'll just leave that here for someone else to get into :3) This scene is about Eddie being scared of and reluctant to embrace the future vis a vis "that new fancy coffee maker" he was thinking about getting but now is decidedly against. It's interesting he is the one portrayed as being sus about the future and Buck is the one who says, "Welcome to the future." I'll get into why later, but it's established. This moment, yes, is a jumping off point for the comical scenes to follow, but this is 9-1-1 right?! By their self-admission these moments always mean something more.
Now, the NEXT scene is bw Bobby and Athena (Bathena x Buddie parallels have been discussed ad nauseam but you've lost your mind if you think I'm just not gonna do it here) and also involves coffee + discussion of some sort of fancy "futuristic" technology, i.e. the Roomba. Athena is the one shown here to be dinking coffee. Not Bobby. Just Athena. I thinks it's also important to mention that while both Bobby and Athena appear skeptical about the Roomba (aka the future) it is Athena who explicitly says, "I am not ready for the future," and Bobby asking if she's finally onboard with May's new job, implying he at least is comfortable with and accepting of the unpredictability of what is to come. Bobby foiling Athena vs. Buck foiling Eddie. Also note that, as Athena expresses her distaste of the future, she pick up the coffee again that she had previously set down. Hm.
Also, with the scene of Maddie, Chimney and Buck baby-proofing the house, there are a couple shots of Maddie in the kitchen where she's off center and their old-school coffee maker is the eye-catcher of the frame. Idk what this means, if even it means anything at all, but still felt like I should put it in here.
Could they be using coffee, of all things, something symbolic of new beginnings and connecting with others and realizing true inner feelings, as a metaphor for the future? I would tuck this away in my tinhattery category except for the fact that coffee was so deliberately highlighted in this ep (bw buddie specifically) and the ep itself is titled Future Tense.
(Side bar: not to forget, of course, three episodes later in Jinx where Eddie and Ana meet again bc she burned her hand on coffee, and then during their date they both turn down coffee at the same time and say "jinx!" Very interesting, Tim, very interesting indeed 👀")
Anyway, to circle back to whatever previous point I was making before, just humor me on my coffee/future metaphor. Buck being the one to say "Welcome to the future," and buying Eddie that fancy new coffee maker = Buck is done with old feelings and old behaviors and ready to move onto what's next; something better, even if it's weird and scary. HOWEVER, Eddie saying "why does that sound terrifying to me" and droning on about how his old coffee maker is just fine and him turning into a technophobe before our very eyes = Eddie is comfortable with what he's used to and content with the familiar; he is not yet ready to branch into the scary, unpredictable unknown of the future, even if it could be good for him and better than what he's known before.
And the fact that it's Buck AND Christopher pranking Eddie with the fancy Hildy coffee maker? I think you get my point that this "scary" new future is a life with Buck and Christopher, the future that is uncertain and unpredictable with a perception he cannot exert absolute control over.
(Side bar again! → I'm just saying, so INTERESTING they continue to reinforce the Buck/Ana parallels which have been blatant since S3 with two plot-centered moments between them and Eddie in S4 involving coffee)
Anyway, this post absolutely got away from me, but it's just so INTERESTING, y'know? Analyzing this show is so FUN, I need S5 like yesterday.

Post-Ep Thoughts: Ghost Stories
Honestly I do not even know where to start.
I am very confused and have many thoughts that I’m gonna try and piece together in a coherent manner under the cut.
EDIT: How I feel about an ep often changes as time passes, so do not be surprised if some of these views change in the coming weeks heh.
Addressing Inconsistencies
I guess I’ll start here?? Idk if this is even a proper heading, but I’m not sure what else to call it. After seeing a post from 911bts (not gonna tag them so they aren’t bothered lmao) I realized that yes, while some eps this season were absolutely produced in a different order than they would be aired purposely, the switch of Ghost Stories and Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1 was definitely last minute due to unknown reasons. I’m not sure what they were trying to achieve, but whatever it was I’m not sure they achieved it.
I know that sometimes scenes that are in promos get cut for time. It happens. But in this case like half the promo scenes were not in the episode? The woman with the ghost roommate was mentioned in both the promo and the log lines and made absolutely no appearance, and Ravi was shown in the promo but did not appear at all in this ep. The beginning news scene with TK and the end part with Harry did appear, so that’s good at least?
Also
WHERE WAS EDDIE?
I know actors sometimes have to miss episodes. But Maddie is already not here, and there was BTS stuff dropped earlier today from this ep and Ryan was in some of the pics. Unless I’m crazy and those were from a different ep? But Eddie’s absence wasn’t explained at all, which sometimes can be realistic (like Hen and Eddie’s absence in The Taking of Dispatch 9-1-1 for example) but when Chim is already gone from the firehouse, his absence on shift not being explained is...weird.
Chimney is Unexpectedly Back!?
Okay before I go any further, I will start with the stuff I did enjoy. I, of course, LOVE seeing Chimney. Crazy to see how far he’s gotten across the country, but that’s def a trip he could’ve made in a week, making the scenes seem out of place since they should have happened, ya know, last week aka approximately a week after the events of 5x05.
It was an extremely pleasant surprise to see Eli. He is lovely and I’m sure it was really nice for Chimney to see a friendly face since it’s been just him and Jee-Yun for a while.
In the end, I cannot decide whether I like the placement of these scenes or not. On the one hand, they seem out of place because like I just mentioned, they were supposed to air last week. But at the same time it’s nice?? Because now we didn’t have to go quite as long without seeing Chimney (This is just an assumption that we aren’t going to see him in the next ep or two but honestly who knows, Brawl in Cell Block 9-1-1 airing first really threw me off).
Henren + Eva
Absolutely LOVED seeing Karen back on my screen, I missed her! I think all of Henren’s content this ep was extremely important and it was definitely my favorite aspect of the episode. While I don’t like Eva and probably never will, I am genuinely glad to see that she is clean and sober, and she definitely looks healthy and mostly content! I saw my sister go through drug addiction, so I completely understand that speaking to Hen was something she needed to do to forgive herself and continue healing, even if Hen didn’t forgive her yet.
While Karen’s initial distrust of Hen broke my heart, I also understand that too. Honestly, if it were me, I don’t think I would have gone back to my spouse after they cheated on me. So of course she’s going to have hesitancy and mistrust regarding Eva. But I’m so so glad she went to talk to Eva herself and realized that Eva wasn’t an obstacle in her and Hen’s relationship anymore, and that Hen has proven over the last few years that her life and love is with Karen and Denny, and that she isn’t going anywhere. I am so glad that Hen not only got some sort of closure with Eva, but so did Karen, and Henren will be stronger now because of it <3.
Thank God Harry is in Therapy
This part of the ep was another that seemed very out of place to me. The content itself I enjoyed, but I couldn’t get past the feeling that this was supposed to all happen last week.
I am glad that Harry is in therapy, and I hope that now that he’s basically confronted what happened to him head on, he can appreciate it’s value more. The therapist made an excellent point - he should not just pretend it never happened. Of course he just wants to stop thinking about it and move on but I think many of us know from experience that until you actually confront what happened to you, it’s hard to move past it. It’s so important to acknowledge your feelings and to talk about it with a trained professional so they can give you the tools to handle the feelings and work through them.
I was so happy to see that this experience (although slightly traumatic in and of itself and resulted in a minor injury) allowed Harry to process what had happened to him, and that he was finally ready to go home! Obviously Michael loves his son and will probably miss having him around, but I know he’s proud that Harry is finally dealing with his trauma and is starting to move forward.
One last note on this: I LOVE that Lou and Harry were able to talk about their shared trauma with their captor and kind of bond over that. I think it probably benefited both of them to be reminded that they’re not alone in this!
Taylor Kelly was Oddly Present?
I think most of you that follow me know by now that I am not a fan of TK. And even if I was, I still think her large presence in this episode was weirdly out of place based on her overall screentime in season 5 so far. She’s barely been in 5 whole minutes (sorry B I cannot remember the exact time right now but this is close right??) this whole season and now she gets maybe that amount of time in one ep? Huh??
I thought it was a little strange that her and Lou got a whole scene to themselves. They’re both recurring characters, and while scenes between just recurring characters has happened before, (I mean, we literally had one with Eva and Karen this ep) it was still just...weird. Honestly I do not know how to explain it past that. I do enjoy that Lou was being sassy towards her tho, like her being there is sus and definitely an ethical conflict, even if it wasn’t the one we wanted lmao.
And the ending we need to talk about obviously. She is absolutely hiding something (whatever the hell that article was about??) and with her being all “the truth is everything” and then making that weird face?? That’s gotta be what causes Buck to fear the relationship trouble in what will now be 5x09.
I hope we do not get super deep into a backstory with her or what not because honestly I don’t care. Just end the relationship and be done with it lol.
Conclusions
I didn’t hate the content of this episode but overall it did not seem cohesive and was just weird. Tim needs to stop trying to run two shows at once and just pick one. Sir, that’s too much work for one person, and we’ve already seen from the Law and Order universe that you can have two interconnected shows that are run by different people successfully (at least one of them is lmao).
Anyway, I’m clearly not getting any more school work done tonight, so come talk to me if you want!
Tagging @evaneddie as requested <3

I've really enjoyed your analyses of 911, so I thought maybe you'd have some thoughts on something that's been bugging me. I get *why* they ended Hen's med school track, but the whole thing at the end of 6.05, with the scene look backs and mirroring how they sent off Michael in 5.08, just... hasn't sat right with me. It kinda felt like a bait and switch, only I knew the whole time Hen wasn't leaving so it felt gimmicky. I don't know if I'm expressing it well, and I'm not sure if part of my annoyance is because I found 6a fairly lackluster. But I'm curious on your thoughts.
Hi Nonnie! Thank you for the kind words, as well as for sharing your frustration, I hope I can help.
Yeah, I do think that was meant to feel as if we’re saying goodbye to Hen. We, as more dedicated fans, I think we knew Hen wasn’t going anywhere, but most casual viewers didn’t. TBH, when Michael’s actor was leaving, I didn’t know he was, so after the ep was over and they shared more info about the background to his departure, THAT is when I knew we really said goodbye to Michael. Because doing these sentimental “look back” moments for characters when it appears as if they’re leaving, that’s not out of the ordinary on TV.
So yeah, I do think they wanted casual viewers to wonder about whether Hen is really leaving, and if you feel that’s gimmicky, that’s totally fair. Every show that has done this moment for a character that ended up staying, they were all sort of being gimmicky. I do believe a part of the reason to go with it might be that, whether we were fooled for a bit there or not, it does give us a moment to stop and really appreciate a character and their journey up to that point. Shows don’t often have moments like that come around for characters that are not leaving, but they may wanna give us a nudge to remember and appreciate a particular character, even if they’re not going anywhere. And in the case of the 605 montage, it would do that, as well as add a punch to everything we’re going to see emotionally for Hen and for Henren in 606. So of all the gimmicky things a show can do (and that many, in fact, choose to do), I’m not personally bothered that much by this one.
Maybe I managed to help you feel a bit better about it, too? I really hope so. Thank you so much again for the kindness, it means a lot! If anyone’s looking for my ask tag, it’s here. xoxox

I know this is far fetched but I kinda feel like the henren & eva arc in 507 is maybe loosely tied to buddie & sh*nnon??? Am I just so deeply attached to buddie that I’m overanalyzing on this one??? Probably lol!
I know the fandom likes to dismiss eddie’s love for sh*nnon but even though that r/s was a mess from the start, he did love her on some level that absolutely matters and was committed to the marriage. They were still married after all, until her untimely demise in s2. She’d been gone at least a year or two before she reappeared. That’s a long time to hold out hope that she’d come back and that they could/would reconcile. Like he did move to within 30 minutes of where she was living in LA.
In 507 the henren & eva situation, karen is worried that eva still has a significant piece of hen’s heart and may succeed in taking away her family (denny & hen). I know the buddie & sh*nnon r/s isn’t a one to one comparison with them but it still makes me think and get all up in my feelings.
Buck made a connection with eddie and chris like immediately in s2 and that only got stronger, even during eddie’s grief arc and beyond. Eddie and chris are buck’s family but eddie’s damage via sh*nnon is real and I’d imagine he still has lingering guilt and pain around that if eddie’s conversation with savanna in 506 is the parallel that i think it is. Sh*nnon is at least part of the reason that eddie is struggling to move on for his own sake and find his own happiness. I don’t think he feels he deserves love and happiness, so he’s putting whatever energy he would reserve for himself back into chris so he still probably feels very guilty for being away from chris for 6 years (by choice and by his own admission). I think eddie feels that chris doesn’t just come first but is actually the ONLY person that really matters. His unexpected feelings for buck though complicate that view of things. I leaves him pulling away from buck exactly because he wants to get even closer to him.
In the wild ravings in my head: buck is karen trying to find a secure sense of family/home. Already chosen by eddie on so many levels but not feeling able to fully trust that. Eddie is hen showing love and devotion as best he can (e.g., always being there for buck emotionally- which he was NOT for sh*nnon - and giving chris to buck via the Will). Sh*nnon is of course is eva, technically out of the picture but still haunting buddie.
I think the interesting implications of connecting henren/eva and buddie/sh*nnon come mostly strongly for me through eva’s conversation with karen at eva’s house. Eva tells karen that hen was the first person to truly see her and love her. We know that eddie and sh*nnon never really quite saw each other fully though, but eddie and buck do see each other. They are in sync. They do work well as best friends, partners at work, co-parents, and more. The karen and eva conversation about henren’s r/s underscores the similarities, differences, and looming unfinished business for buddie.
I know the eva reappearance annoyed some of the fandom but I appreciated the closure it gave henren and the way it reinforced their love for each other. I also liked how it loosely spoke to what buddie have, or could have as eddie continues to heal from his complicated marriage to sh*nnon.
This ep is all about being haunted and trauma, and I do think eddie is still carrying around unresolved stuff connected to his past r/s with sh*nnon even though she’s dead and gone. Now that the anger toward her has passed (s3) he’s going toe to toe with guilt over his mistakes with her (and chris). And he’s struggling emotionally. The 413/414 trauma adds to it all because it brought buck and eddie closer within eddie’s heart even if he is outwardly pulling away anf distancing himself. Eddie’s sacrificing his own emotional health and happiness right now as atonement for the crap that went down back in the day with his ex, and all of that is still piled squarely on top of him slowly realizing that he’s in love with his best friend.
The henren stuff in this ep just really made me think about buddie. I don’t know if it’s all actually connected but it feels like it. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I've noticed that in terms of their love interests, we've always seen Eddie confiding in Buck about his, his conversation with Buck about Shannon in the Christmas episode, talking to him about Ana in 3x12 and now 4x06. However, with Buck, we never see him talk to Eddie about his romantic prospects (as far as I can remember). We never see him talk to Eddie about Taylor Kelly, we never see Eddie's reaction/thoughts about his relationship with Ali and never anything about Abby (which is surprising given how significant she was to Buck), in fact Buck actively avoids bringing her up as seen during that hot air balloon rescue in 3x17. Thoughts?
Hi Nonnie and thank you so much for this ask! I think a key element to remember here is that we actually also don’t see Eddie telling Buck about Ana in 312. We learn he must have because Buck spills everything during a call, but we don’t see the convo itself. This and many other examples (like how Eddie is up to date on Buck’s therapy without us seeing Buck telling him about it) lets us know that their communication goes well beyond what we see on screen. We’re led to believe they basically share everything, we just don’t necessarily see it transpire. Similarly, it’s true that in 317 Buck avoided bringing Abby up during a call, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he didn’t confide in Eddie about her off screen. In 318 Eddie is so annoyed and exasperated over Buck being willing to die to keep a promise he made to Abby that it makes me feel there’s a good chance Eddie has heard from Buck about the pain this woman caused him, we just didn’t see it. And I like that we’re told their communication is far deeper and more encompassing than what we see, that it’s been shown that for the most part, what one knows, the other does too. Because that’s very spouse-y, isn’t it? We all would pretty much assume the same for Henren, Bathena, Madney. I hope this answer helps! xoxox
As a disabled person it's kind of really bummed me out to see people ignore Ana's ableism particularly because all the people I see happily embracing her seem to be abled. Anyway I just wanted to say thank you for acknowledging it and mentioning it as something that should be dealt with because it is very important to me and it made me sad to see so many people acting like it doesn't matter
Oh, Nonnie! BIG hugs to you! Yes, her attitude rubbed me the wrong way when I saw ep 312 and I’m glad if mentioning it helped make you feel better. IDK if you’ve read about it here, a few months ago I was hit by a case of constant vertigo, which has been debilitating, and I’ve been dealing with this new disability and sadly, with ableism as well since. I know how much it can hurt. But I wanna encourage you, that people do care! So if it helps, when I watched 312 and was dismayed by it, that was before the vertigo, and I’ve also seen others who have pointed the problem with Ana’s POV as well and I believe most of these people are abled. Tumblr is a very fractured experience, we all only see a fraction of fandom, you know? So I hope it help when I share this and say people do care! For those who haven’t mentioned it after 406 too, it might be that they forgot, not because they don’t care, but because it’s been quite a while since 312. I hope this helps you feel a lot less alone! *more hugs* xoxox
I don’t know if it is just me but Oli/Buck is built like a tank and yet he still has this little pouch of belly which i find SO cute and So real. Do you think eddie Loves it just as much as me? I can imagine him mindlessly rubbing it when they’re Relaxing together or planting soft kisses on it when Buck has a stomachache
Awww, Nonnie! I love this! XD I do believe it’s an Oli thing and that he said something about being in the perfect place [weight wise] as a vegan boy who likes to eat. ;) I love that tummy too, so you’re not alone. And I def think Eddie is in our club as well and enjoys rubbing it. Maybe once or twice, when he was too tired to care, he even put his head down on it and allowed himself to enjoy that softness enough to let go, not really falling into a nap, but hovering on the edge of it, feeling content sipping in that he gets to love this beautifully soft man, it sips down to his very bones. Thank you for sharing, Nonnie! xoxox

Meta asks
that thing Eddie does where he tries to get Buck to look him in the eyes when he's trying to comfort him is so soft and it kills me every time
Nonnie, thank you for this ask, this is truth and you should say it! And it’s one of the things that makes it feel different to a regular friendship, good as it may be, because there’s something so intimate about it, so connected and... in need, I’d say, like Eddie doesn’t just want, he needs to know that Buck is okay. Add to that his thumb on Buck’s pulse point, on that very intimate, some might say highly erotic spot (it’s me, I’m ‘some’) and it’s a wonder we didn’t all spontaneously expire after that scene. Buck included.
Hi! I love your Buddie Meta posts! The Buck Begins ep was so so good. I really loved the scene where the team comes to help Buck, and after watching it a couple of times, I noticed how incredible the song lyrics are in that moment. Just before Eddie reaches Buck and is the first one to grab the line, the lyric is literally "the future I just can't touch" !!!!?? Am I nuts for reading too far into this...but Eddie is the only one we get a close-up of, and after that lyric?? HE is Buck's future!
Thank you so much for the kindness, Nonnie! *hearts* Also? Yeees! I actually wanted to do a meta post looking at all the songs playing during Buddie scenes and their lyrics... I will at some point! But because it’s already been on my mind, I can say that I don’t think you’re reading too much into it. BTW, for anyone who doesn’t know: the song is So Far by Ólafur Arnalds. The lyrics are perfect for describing Buck’s mindset in that moment of desperation overall, but there are other songs with similar lyrics. So it feels significant, choosing this one, with its climactic moment that calls attention to itself when it mirrors the climactic moment of the whole ep, while cutting out a small section of the song, so that the last line before the climax is the one you quoted, Nonnie, even though it’s not the original last line before the song’s climax, AND while making the choice that it would be Eddie who comes into view right at that moment and Eddie whose face is visible up close and Eddie who’s the only one to get that treatment during that scene. You couple all that with how many moments we’ve had between Buddie where the lyrics seemed to be significant and it doesn’t feel coincidental.
Hi! I absolutely adore your meta posts! They really lift me up whenever the fandom seems to lose a bit of hope on buddie becoming canon. I feel like parts of the fandom keep going from thinking we are being spoon fed buddie content and surely it'll become canon to "the writers are homophobes and buddie will never be canon because they cut back on their scenes together" and it's giving me whiplash. But you make great analysis and your posts are always consistent, and I'm so glad for them!
Thank you sooo much for this, lovely Nonnie! I’m so happy to know my meta posts help. And TBH, I don’t blame fandom. Because it’s hard to have faith in something happening if there’s very little precedent to it, you know? Though I think that could actually also be a selling point for the executives on the show. They do something groundbreaking like making Buddie canon and 911 will become a part of queer history and talked about even decades after the end of the show. Currently, Henren and Josh and Michael and David are all nice rep (for gay people), but it’s not new in the same way that Buddie would be (especially if they do let them identify as bi).
Back to fandom’s whiplash, especially when other fandoms have let people down, it’s easy to feel despair. After all, it used to be that homoerotic interpretation used to be explicitly unwanted by TV execs. Then they discovered they could have really loyal fans of this without losing homophobic viewers, by using homoerotic subtext and never delivering on it. And at the time, that was progress. Because shows recognized those queer ships fans and started valuing them (though not enough to lose other fans). And then they started getting backlash for not delivering, they started being accused of exploitation of the fans of such ships. The term ‘queerbaiting’ was coined. Sometimes fans are too quick with it, but other times I find using this term as criticism to be fully justified.
Now, a lot of shows where fans had hope, to me they felt like they were consciously queerbaiting and I never expected them to deliver. But 911 strikes me as different. It doesn’t have the same infatuation with toxic masculinity that many of those other shows have, its viewers have already shown that they’re into/cool with diversity (enough for LS to actually use the diversity angle as a main selling point from the get go), the general vibe of the show is that it really does care and wants to make things better (or we wouldn’t have gotten storylines like the one with Michael being stopped and searched because he’s black) and at this point, TV execs have more experience with the fandoms of such ships, they know their value and the possible criticism. So that 911 execs are clearly aware of fandom and presumably, wouldn’t want the backlash, yet they continue to provide so much Buddie fodder with each ep, it makes me have hope in a way I haven’t with a lot of other ships I had, where I had fun in fandom, but I was always conscious canon isn’t happening. That’s not how I feel here. Is my feeling a guarantee of anything? Nope. But as long as you want it, I’ll continue to share it and what makes me feel the way I do. And then we can hope together that what I’m feeling isn’t wrong. ;) Thank you again, Nonnie, sorry this got long and hopefully this was helpful in some way! XD
Hope you’re ALL having a great day! xoxoxox
